LAST MONTH:

SIXERDO YOU REMEMBER?

he clothing, horse-drawn cart and lack of motor vehicles may give a clue to the longgone era in which this week’s photo -– courtesy of Barry Couldwell – was taken. With wide streets and large houses it looks like a lovely area – can you tell us where it is? Many thanks to Tony Jeffcock for last month’s photo, which was taken at the Underbank Schoolroom clinic. Meanwhile the photo of Bradfield Cricket Club published in the March issue of Sixer continues to resonate. Frank Elliott recognised himself and several old pals from a team line-up taken, he reckons, in or around 1952. Frank tells us the line-up is as follows, (Back, l-r): Alf Constable, Stan Byford, Tom Elliott, Ralph Dawson, Gordon Elliott Frank Elliott, Herbert Ibbotson, Bob Dawson. (Front, l-r): Willis Harper, Thoreld Dawson, Bernard Wragg, Jack Bell, Bernard Ashton.

Getting up and down has never been easier, thanks to Barkers One of the problems with ageing seems to be the whole getting up and down, or in and out situation. Whether it be in bed, the stairs, bath or armchairs, things just seem to get more difficult. All this could change with a visit to either of the Barkers Furniture showrooms in Hillsborough. At Burton Street you will find a good range of comfortable chairs with great support for your back. You may prefer one which has an electronic motor that slowly raises you to your feet, or from your feet to a comfortable sitting position. You can recline and put your feet up, all at the touch of a button. You’ll be comfortable and relaxed, it could really change your life. You will be made very welcome at Barkers Furniture, a traditional family run business whose staff will be eager to give great customer service, without being pushy. They will help you to find the best product for you, whether it be a comfortable chair, a new sofa or a bed. With many famous brands available you are sure to find a quality piece of furniture that is perfect for you. At the Penistone Road showroom Barkers also have on display a range of electric adjustable beds. These allow you to control your sleeping position and can be particularly useful for anyone with mobility issues as well as having benefits for a range of other conditions. Anyone who suffers from swelling complaints can relieve the pressure and pain

by elevating their affected limbs. By raising limbs above heart level the pressure in this part of the body is released and circulation improves. This being a far more consistent method than placing pillows beneath limbs.

In addition, for people suffering with chronic pain, an adjustable bed can help by easing you in and out of bed every day. They also provide a range of positions to sleep in. Each time you elevate your back or legs you are realigning your vertebrae and adjusting the pressure they place on your nerves and spine. An example being if your lower back is sore it is recommended that you elevate your legs, creating a pelvic tilt which can relieve strain on the affected muscles. It has also been found that sleeping in a slightly more upright position has the additional benefit of decreasing snoring, as this often occurs due to blocked airways!

PROMOTIONFOX VALLEY

Seasalt Cornwall – one of the new fashion stores opening at Fox Valley

RIGHT: Ponti's Italian Kitchen

The countdown is on to the launch of the £50m Fox Valley shopping centre in North Sheffield. orth Sheffield's newest retail destination is unveiled to the public in June and there's a special celebrity guest lined up to cut the ribbon on the £50 million project. Fox Valley will be officially opened by Joanna Lumley OBE on Thursday 16 June at 11am. The development brings a brand new and unique retail line up to this part of the city, with a fantastic range of high street names as well as high quality independent retailers. Fox Valley is anchored by the region's largest Aldi store, which will sit alongside a host of other retailers including Yorkshire's first stand-alone Seasalt fashion and homewares store and Full Gas Bikes - a brand new concept cycle store from the pro cyclist Tony Gibb. A new Next store for north Sheffield and a boutique department store – Sandersons – will open in the next phase of store openings in September. Restaurants and coffee shops at Fox Valley will include NYC Bar and Grill, Costa Coffee and Central Bean, which will be housed in the centre’s striking umbrella building. This pays tribute to the paragon umbrella frame, which was Joanna Lumley who will officially open Fox patented close to the site in the 1850s Valley on June 16th by the industrialist Samuel Fox. And in another first for the region, Ponti's Italian Kitchen is launching the company's first restaurant outside London at Fox Valley. The centre's restaurants have been set around a landscaped fountain area with a south facing aspect. The development is being delivered on a 28-acre former steelworks site and includes 60,000 sq ft of brand new high spec office space as well as a neighbouring housing site, which will bring 118 new homes to the area by the Yorkshire housing company Stonebridge Homes. Mark Dransfield, managing director of Dransfield Properties, developers of the Fox Valley scheme, said: “We have sought from the outset to create a unique and different retail destination here at Fox Valley and bringing a great retail mix is

a key part of that as well as looking at the architecture and the artwork around the project. "We also wanted to create something really different architecturally to this part of north Sheffield, which also reflects the area's rich industrial heritage. We hope our shoppers and visitors will be impressed when the centre opens on 16 June.”

Find the right balance and get back on track at the new Sheffield Vertigo & Balance Centre.

FRIENDLY & RELIABLE FAMILY RUN COMPANY FAIR TRADES REGISTERED

his month the Sheffield Vertigo & Balance Centre opens its door to people who are experiencing vertigo and balance problems. This is a new multidisciplinary clinic for diagnosis and management of disorders of the human balance system. When things go wrong the consequences can be devastating for the person and their family. This is where the skills of the clinic staff in both the diagnosis and rehabilitation of people with complex clinical presentations is fundamental. Applying the best research evidence to place you at the centre of treatment and rehabilitation is key in producing excellent results. Sheffield Vertigo and Balance Centre is comprised of specialists dedicated to diagnose, assess and manage problems in a focussed and systematic way: Dr Soumit Dasgupta (consultant audiovestibular physician), Karen Stevens (physiotherapist), Chris Bowes (audiologist), Cheryl Thompson (audiologist – tinnitus specialist) and Kay Wright (audiologist – stress management). The new centre is based within the existing Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic in Broomhill. Most people do self-refer to the centre and staff liaise with medical practitioners after initial assessment and the start of rehabilitation. However, referrals from GPs, other medical or technical personnel are accepted. The initial appointment will be a triaging appointment where a decision will be made as to the complexity of the case. However, the majority may be complex cases where they will be assessed in detail by the consultant and a management plan formulated. Following this, a detailed laboratory assessment might be undertaken. This is done to pick up the site and intensity of the problem for dedicated vestibular or other rehabilitation. Some patients will also need a cognitive approach to address the illness cognition or acceptance issue which often plays a crucial role in the overall perception of balance. Vertigo and all forms of balance disorders are complex and a team approach is fundamental to a successful outcome

Is your boiler paying the price for all its hard work over the winter? Now is a great time to up-grade your heating with the help of Flames of Sheffield. f your boiler didn’t perform to the best of its ability over winter, the last thing you probably wanted to do was replace it – potentially plunging your house into sub-zero conditions for days. But now that spring has arrived, it’s the ideal time to take care of any niggling problems or even a complete renovation. Flames of Sheffield have helped more than 3,700 customers with their fire, fireplace, stove and central heating needs since they first opened their doors in 2005. Director Lee Day said: “Although the volume of customers visiting the showroom increased during the autumn and winter periods, the spring is a great time of year to look at completing any home improvements, especially as we have many great offers available.” The Flames of Sheffield showroom on the upper mall of Hillsborough Barracks offers much more than many other central heating installers. They are open seven days a week and they have a consumer credit license, which means they can offer a competitive finance scheme. For extra peace of mind, they also give their customers a one-year guarantee on installations. There are great household savings to be made by installing an A-rated, energy-efficient central heating boiler, with the average yearly reduction being between £300-400. Flames of Sheffield are an accredited installer for Worcester-Bosch and this means they can give their customers a seven, eight or tenyear parts and labour guarantee, subject to terms and conditions, and a ten-year guarantee on the heat exchanger. They install combi, conventional or system boilers, plus they can also install high-quality Henrad radiators with a ten year guarantee. A solid fuel stove is also a great way to cut down on gas usage. As long as the stove is DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) approved and the correct fuel is used, like seasoned or kiln-dried timber or smokeless coal, this can be a great alternative to heat large areas of a home. Senior sales adviser Sue Martin said: “Many of the solid fuel stoves used in Sheffield and the surrounding areas have not been installed by a qualified HETAS engineer (Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme). This can lead to

many problems and issues in terms of the home insurance being invalidated, being incorrectly sealed and fumes leaking into rooms or Building Control visiting the property and insisting a stove is removed. Flames of Sheffield offer a complete project-managed service from start to finish and are happy to (Remove underlined so reads “and take…..”) take professional responsibility for installing and certificating a solid fuel stove, fire or fireplace.” Flames are an official retailer for a whole range of established British manufacturers and this allows them to offer customers longer than standard guarantees on a large selection of electric, gas and solid fuel fires and stoves. These manufacturers include the likes of Valor, Gazco, Nu-Flame, Dimplex, Stovax, Paragon, Matchless and Electroflame. They also have a number of bespoke fireplaces hand-made for them on an exclusive basis and this enables them to meet virtually any customer’s needs, especially if they do not wish to have the added expense of changing their carpet or wooden/laminate flooring when a new fireplace is installed. Senior sales adviser Helen Gowling said: “At Flames of Sheffield, we truly are a local and independent, fire, fireplace, stove and central heating specialist. We run selected promotional offers during the year on a wide range of fires, fireplaces, stoves and boilers. Whether a customer requires a high-efficiency fire, a large amount of heat output for their room or an electric fire with a unique flame picture, we are always able to meet their needs.”

PROMOTIONCOLLECTIVE LEGAL SOLUTIONS

You need to take advice if…

Lasting Power of Attorney: the myth and the reality. any people have heard of a lasting power of attorney (previously an Enduring Power of Attorney), but they associate it with something you arrange later in life when you “start feeling iffy”. Here we will investigate some of the myths and realities surrounding mental incapacity and Lasting Power of Attorney.

M

MYTH: Mental incapacity is something that only affects people in later life through illnesses such as Alzheimer’s, so I don’t need to do anything just yet. REALITY Accident or illness can strike at any time, often without warning. The consequences of failing to plan can be significant, as outlined in this article. Why leave something so important to chance?

• You or your spouse/partner don’t yet have a Will.

MYTH: If I suffer an accident or illness, my spouse or children will automatically be able to take over the running of my affairs as my next of kin. REALITY: Your spouse or children have no automatic right to act on your behalf. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney, they will be required to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as your Deputy – a long, complex, costly and intrusive process.

• You have a Will but it leaves everything to your spouse/partner.

MYTH: I can simply add my spouse or children to my bank accounts, as a joint account holder would just carry on as normal in the event of my mental incapacity. REALITY: Banks are guided by the British Bankers’ Association to freeze both solely and jointly held accounts where one account holder loses mental capacity (they may allow pre-authorised payments).

• You or your spouse/partner don’t have a pre-paid Funeral Plan.

• You don’t have both kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney set up.

• You are divorced or widowed. • You have children.

MYTH: When creating a Lasting Power of Attorney, it’s best to appoint my spouse and children to act together jointly. REALITY: Many poorly advised individuals have fallen into this trap. Appointing family jointly means they must act together in all matters, rendering the Lasting Power of Attorney useless when one of the appointed family can’t act – incapacity or death is not an excuse!

• You are concerned about what will happen and covering the costs if you need long term residential care.

MYTH: If anything happens to me and a decision needs to be made about life sustaining treatment, the doctor will automatically follow the wishes of my next of kin. REALITY: Only through a Lasting Power of Attorney can you give the people you trust the right to make choices about your health and welfare, including the ability to refuse lifesustaining treatment if you wish. A Lasting Power of Attorney is often likened to an insurance policy – you hope you’ll never need it, but your family will be very grateful for your foresight if you do. It’s the only way to have your say about who you trust to manage your affairs and make things as simple as possible for your loved ones.

BRADFIELD PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER IN ASSOCIATION WITH SIXER

REPORT BY THE CHAIRMAN Council meetings and I know from personal experience how much the children enjoyed having the opportunity to sit at the table and have their own Chairperson wear the Council chair’s chain. Photographs of some of these meetings have been posted on our Facebook page, which is also a new feature enabling the Parish Council to engage more with our parishioners. The Parish Council has run a successful apprentice scheme for many years, with many apprentices gaining full-time employment with other employers after their time with us and we hope to take on a new horticultural apprentice in the summer. I would like to take the opportunity to thank Councillors for their commitment to the Parish throughout the year and also thank our staff for all their assistance throughout the year.

aving been on the Council since 1999 I have seen so much good work in our communities and this is down to both Councillors, Parishioners and members of community groups. It’s great to see this continuing today and I was delighted to present The Citizens Awards this year, which gives us a chance to recognise those who have made an outstanding contribution. Last year the Council welcomed seven new members to Bradfield Parish for a full new term, which gave us a different perspective on issues within the Parish and allowed the new Councillors a different view of the Parish. Throughout the year we have given grants to many community groups to help them with projects within their area and I know the grant monies are always welcomed by the groups who continue to find it difficult to find funding sources. Elsewhere, local schools have visited the Council offices to hold their own School

THE CITIZENS AWARDS arishioners and Councillors gathered at Bradfield Parish Council offices to celebrate those who have made a significant contribution to the Parish and surrounding communities at the annual Citizens Awards. Chairman Vickie Priestley presented the awards and the Good Citizens Award went to Derek Reaney for his outstanding dedication to Lomas Hall. Derek has been on the committee for 30 years and Chairman for 25 years. Councillor Peter Butler said: “Anyone who lives Stannington or goes through Stannington knows the Lomas Hall and, to a large extent, Derek is the Lomas Hall. His wife Norma has been the booking agent for a while; opening and closing the doors of the hall, and Derek is such a gentleman that if the doors need closing on a dark wintry night, he closes the doors himself. He has done a fantastic job, we really do appreciate it, and it’s all done for no wages.” Derek recently decided to stand down as Chairman, and was delighted to receive the award. “It came as quite a surprise!” He said. “I was in two minds about stepping down, but I felt it was time and then when I was told about the award, it was a really nice ending. I have finished now as chairman, but as all people who are involved in the community will know, you can’t do it without the support of your family. That has certainly been true in my particular case; I have had help from my wife in no small way and from my children – they have all suffered a tad of inconvenience. Last but not least, I would like to thank my father, because he showed me how to mend roofs cheaply when money was tight! We have some wonderful councillors here; Peter and Mavis Butler and Vickie are the gold standard when it comes to help. When I wanted them they were there, and when I didn’t want them they didn’t get under my feet. It’s been a wonderful experience, and it has ended very nicely in this fashion. I am very grateful to you all, thank you very much.” The second award was a Special Recognition Award for good work within the Parish and this was awarded to the Bradfield Historical Society. The group started back in 1983 and now specialise in talks and research about the Sheffield Flood of 1864. They meet on the first Monday of every month at Bradfield Village Hall, where non-members are welcome to attend and, as well as taking part in other local events held in the area such as craft fairs, galas, environment events, they also host regular events with guest speakers. On 4 July Mark Goodwill will be giving a talk on the Sheffield Battalions in the Battle of

He said: “I would just like to thank you for offering it to us this year, we’re delighted.” Following The Citizens Awards guests enjoyed tea and cake. Congratulations to all of the winners and may their great work continue.

PROMOTIONHILLSBOROUGH CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC

A few simple steps can keep you healthy, but the experts at the Hillsborough Chiropractic Clinic can help when things go wrong. e all know that prevention is better than cure and yet, many of us do not go to a masseur or chiropractor until our joints and muscles are at their very worst. Poor diet and bad lifestyle choices can take their toll on both our physical and our mental health - and one often affects the other. Chiropractor and owner of Hillsborough Chiropractic Clinic, Sonja Low offers a few simple ways to keep your mind and body healthy.

W

Exercise regularly Exercise not only helps you burn calories, it releases endorphins - the happy hormones that can help you feel more positive and reduce your perception of pain. To make sure you exercise regularly, try choosing one or two types of exercise you enjoy. Whether it’s swimming, walking, going to the gym or dancing, make sure it’s something you find fun. If you’re struggling to motivate yourself, get a friend to go with you. That way, it’s a bit harder to stay at home. Remember to ease yourself into exercise gradually to avoid too many post exercise aches and pains. You need to aim for 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week and two sessions of strengthening exercise – this could include digging in your garden, doing weight machines at the gym, doing body weight exercises such as press-ups and squats or a yoga/pilates session.

a relaxing class or look at changing your work hours. Try to treat yourself as you would your best friend. Improving your self-esteem can be a very positive step. Acupuncture has really helped some of our patients cope with stress levels. If you are struggling with this Jasmine - our acupuncturist may be able to help.

Visit our chiropractors If you are getting joint or muscle aches and pains or are suffering from an injury, try visiting our chiropractors to get your spine/ joint / muscle functioning better. Hillsborough Chiropractic Clinic 145a Bradfield Road, Hillsborough, S6 2BY Tel: 0114 233 5553 www.chiropractorhillsborough.co.uk

Sleep well Try to establish a healthy sleep routine where you go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate) after about 3pm. Caffeine affects some people’s sleep patterns, causing them to wake up regularly throughout the night or struggle to fall asleep. Alcohol can also affect the quality of your sleep, so try and keep it to a minimum. It is thought that keeping the temperature in your house slightly on the cooler side or taking a cool bath before bed can help to improve your night’s sleep. Try to stop using a tablet or phone about one and a half to two hours prior to going to bed. The artificial light can stimulate your brain.

Reduce stress Take a look at your lifestyle and see if there are areas you can change to help reduce stress. Maybe ask your family for more help around the house, take time out for yourself to do something you enjoy such as taking

Why choose the Hillsborough Chiropractic Clinic? Hillsborough Chiropractic Clinic opened its doors in August 2000. The centre has four chiropractors, who all treat general spinal conditions, as well as each specialising in particular fields. Owner Sonja tends to treat sports injuries and older patients, Tom concentrates on extremity joints, and treats chronic spinal pain, Bal treats sports injuries (eg boxing and body building) as well as headaches and positional vertigo, and Toby enjoys treating general back pain and sciatica. They are joined by new massage therapist (maternity cover) Kate, acupuncturist Jasmine and receptionists Andrea and Christine. Sonja and her team pride themselves on putting their clients at ease and many of their clients are either returning clients or are recommended by friends and family. For an affordable, professional and friendly service, contact the clinic today.

COMPLETE KITCHEN & BEDROOM SOLUTIONS

On show at Complete Kitchen & Bedroom Solutions, S6

From a replacement worktop to a whole new kitchen or bedroom, there’s no job too small for CKB.

H

aving traded out of Middlewood Road for over six years now, the Sheffield public are becoming well aware of the high quality, bespoke service on offer at Complete Kitchens and Bedroom Solutions. Owned by Scott Webster, CKB offer a complete kitchen and bedroom service alongside the capability of anything from removing walls to building extensions. Scott said: “When you come to us you really do get everything. Building work, electrics, plastering, decoration, fitting, flooring – this is a one-stop-shop.” But just because Scott and his team can perform complete renovations, that doesn’t mean that they have to. CKB understand that not everybody can afford top to bottom renovations at this moment in time so are more than happy to work on anything from replacing a single kitchen unit upwards. “I can do eight metres of worktop and a new sink and tap for £950 or a whole kitchen or bedroom – so people can have whatever they can budget for,” said Scott. “And if you have your own electrician or plumber that you would like to use then you are more than welcome to do so. We

CKB

will do as little or as much as you wish.” A feature of CKB which sets it apart from many of its competitors is that it manufactures everything on site, giving it a bespoke service. This means it can cater to any needs or desires. Scott employs a close team of dedicated workers including a registered electrician, and plumber, as well as qualified plasterer, brick layers and window fitters, who are all contracted to CKB. Gloss doors particularly in white and cream are in vogue at the current time. This gives a room a fresh appearance and Scott has seen requests for this design boom. Consequently Scott is offering deals on an Astro white and cream gloss – check in at the showroom or give him a call for more deals. Scott doesn’t believe in such gimmicks as offering customers ten per cent off their total bill though. “These are often used to pull the wool over people’s eyes. I offer competitive prices from the word go.” Should you contact CKB, Scott will come out to view your home for a free appointment. The visit normally lasts for an hour depending on job size. “I don’t give

quotes off-the-cuff. I am meticulous when it comes to pricing, so post-appointment I will go through everything and provide an accurate, itemised and fair quote.” Scott is the initial point of contact for customers and he not only designs his work but does the fitting too. Once Scott has committed to a job he dedicates all his time to it from inception to completion. He guarantees that he will not be working on multiple projects at one time and is even willing to turn down work to be able to do this. “My customers like to know that I will always be there and that they have my undivided attention. That is the least they deserve and will get when they come to me.” As such his customers can contact him 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Doors and worktops are guaranteed for a decade but for extra peace of mind Scott ensures that payment comes in instalments and that the full fee is not paid until the job has been completed satisfactorily. For a company that will provide your home with undivided, specialist and bespoke attention, give CKB a call today!

SIXERMUSIC

MAESTRO CLASS

Ensemble Berlin, (main picture), Julian Lloyd Webber, John Lenehan and Emma Johnson

Some of the world’s best musicians are once again heading for Bradfield this summer. Stephanie Burns looks forward to the treats in store. t may not be the likeliest of locations for an internationally acclaimed music festival, but each summer Bradfield welcomes hundreds of visitors to the magical Grade I listed Parish Church of St Nicholas for a weeklong programme of world-class concerts. This year, from 25 June to 2 July, audiences will be treated to performances from the likes of Ensemble Berlin, Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber and VOCES8. And it’s not just classical music. Along with pianist John Lenehan and percussionist Paul Carvis, Emma Johnson MBE will explore the role of the clarinet in jazz. “The aim of the festival is to continue bringing higher profile artists to Bradfield and that’s what we’ve achieved with this year’s programme,” said festival secretary Keith Hoyland. One extra special musician is former Sheffield school pupil SAC Philippa Hobbs of the Woodwind Ensemble of the Band of the RAF College, an ensemble that brings together the two established wind quintets which regularly perform around the country in support of the RAF. They play by permission of the Air Force Board of the Defence Council and their appearance at Bradfield is in aid of the RAF Music Charitable Trust. As a youngster, Philippa played the flute in

WHAT THE ARTISTS SAY Julian Lloyd Webber “I have always loved playing at Bradfield! Its unique and magical setting is a perfect and inspiring place to make music. I am looking forward to returning with my wife and fellow cellist Jiaxin and pianist Rebeca Omordia. Together we will be sharing a highly personal programme of beautiful music with one of our favourite audiences.” Emma Johnson MBE “St Nicholas Church perched up high overlooking the surrounding countryside is one of my favourite places to play in England.” John Lenehan “I always look forward to performing at the Bradfield festival. It's a wonderful, peaceful setting and the audience is as warm and welcoming as any I have encountered.”

The City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra and the Hallam Sinfonia. She is very much looking forward to performing in her local surroundings and is excited to be part of this year’s festival. Philippa is not the only one excited to be playing in Bradfield – just check out the testimonials (left) – but for most of the performers it’s a rather more unusual location than they’re used to. “Many of the artists have fantastic riders (conditions put forward by artists in order for them to play) but we’ve got limited facilities,” said Keith. “It’s pub toilets and Portaloos, no dedicated dressing rooms for males and females and no onsite provision for showers, so we have to make it up to them in other ways – the venue, the acoustics, and the hospitality we provide all encourage artists to come back again and again.” It’s the intimate setting – audiences of just 300 when many of the performers are used to playing to crowds of thousands – that provides another huge draw. They’re not stuck on a stage totally removed from their audience but instead surrounded by them. While ,the majority of ticket sales come from Yorkshire, Derbyshire, East Midlands and

Nottinghamshire, people travel from all over the country to attend the festival, and some even choose to spend a week’s holiday here. Each year, The Old Horns erect a marquee in the churchyard for interval drinks and Our Cow Molly ice creams and they put on pre-concert dinners so Above: attendees can grab a bite beforehand. Voces8 This year’s festival – set to be one of the most ambitious yet – comes hot off the heels of a very successful concert that was held in March. In memory of Keith’s late wife Heather, the event at Wisewood Methodist Church attracted an audience of 180. Around 150 of those stayed behind after the music to enjoy the complimentary refreshments – including ten fruit cakes Keith made himself. “We had a great night and it was a fitting tribute to Heather's memory,” said Keith. “I’m so grateful to everyone for supporting the concert and to all who helped in any way whatsoever. My friend Gerry Kersey, BBC Radio Sheffield presenter, did a great job as MC, too.” Once all expenses had been paid, Keith was delighted to donate £500 to the Cantamus Girls Choir, £400 to the Sheffield Music Hub, £200 to Wisewood Methodist Church and £230 to the Bradfield Festival of Music. With this donation, artists are already booked for the 2017 and 2018 festivals, and Keith is currently working on the 2019 programme. One of next year’s highlights is Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Laine’s daughter, jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth, who will perform with her husband, American keyboard player Below: The Charlie Wood. Woodwind Ensemble In the meantime, tickets are still available for this year so don’t of the Band miss your chance to witness these world-class artists while they’re of the RAF on our doorstep. SIXERPROMOTION Nathan Hill

Nathan’s inspiring story is the secret ingredient that makes Nathan’s Crafts & Tea Rooms extra special. rom the outside, Nathan’s Crafts & Tea Room may seem like just another business on Stannington Road, but behind the gorgeous gifts, handmade cards, tea and cakes is an inspiring story. Running a business can be a challenge at the best of times, which is why 22-year-old Nathan Hill’s rise to success has been all the more triumphant. When Nathan was 13 months old, he had a viral brain infection which left him with learning difficulties, epilepsy and problems with his sight and hearing. Despite all this, Nathan has always been determined to live an independent life. After leaving formal education with no work experience at the age of 16, Nathan enrolled at Henshaws College in Harrogate, a charity supporting people living with sight loss and a range of other disabilities to go beyond expectations. “There are no places like it in Sheffield,” says Nathan’s mother Tracy. “Because it was such a long way from home, it meant he had to board and that was a big wrench for me. “However, whatever initial doubts I had were quickly allayed. They gave him self-belief, which he just didn’t have before and I think his experience there also gave us confidence in his abilities.” What made Nathan’s three years at Henshaws so lifechanging were the life skills he learnt such as writing shopping lists, working out how much money to take to the shops and how to make meals for himself. From here, Nathan went on to win an award in hospitality. Along with the card-making skills he enjoyed, and various work placements, he came back to Sheffield far better equipped. The craft shop and tea room opened shortly after he left college in September 2014 and has allowed Nathan to develop his skills even further and to share them with others. With the help of carers Tracey Beresford (previously a school cook) and Sam Webster (a baker in her own right), he makes lunches, cakes, “brilliant” lemon meringues, and delicious rocky roads without help. In addition to working in the kitchen, Nathan does front of house jobs such as taking orders and payments, and socialising with the friendly regulars. As well as giving him a chance to create and sell his own cards, Nathan’s Crafts & Tea Room hosts a number of craft and tea events for the community including a knit and natter group on Fridays

and bookable afternoon tea. Customers can drop in, buy a kit to create their own cards for £1 or purchase and paint a wooden duck. The shop also sells locally handmade jewellery and gifts, offers creative birthday parties for children and provides outside catering. The business is doing so well that it now offers morning and afternoon placements to other local people with disabilities. Heather has additional needs and has a regular placement on Wednesdays, which allows her to develop her own catering skills and confidence. Nathan has made great strides in the last few years and continues to work towards living a more independent life. On the day the business opened, Nathan asked his girlfriend Jessica to marry him and his next goal is for them to live together. “I have two other sons and Nathan doesn’t see himself as any different to them,” says Tracy. “This business has given Nathan the chance to feel a part of the community and to give others a place to come.” Nathan’s Crafts & Tea Room is open on Wednesdays, Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays. Call to make a group reservation or drop in for a cup of tea today. Nathan’s Crafts & Tea Room 654a Stannington Road, Sheffield, S6 6AE Tel: 0754 062 1446

BITS & PIECES Funding appeal for new sculpture in Worrall

Sculptors Robin Widdowson and Sara Beavan-Widdowson are appealing for funding for the creation and installation of a large permanent sculpture in Worrall. The artists had previously designed and managed the development of the wreath-style artwork Up-Cycle, which was made of bicycle wheels for Worrall in 2014, coinciding with the Tour de France. They are now appealing to local residents and businesses to help fund the new sculpture (right), which will not only celebrate the Tour de France’s legacy, but the village’s heritage and people too. “Up-Cycle was temporary. We are now aiming to create a permanent piece of public artwork on the existing site,” said Robin. Sara added: “We’ve engaged and worked with the community delivering workshops, walks and talks to inspire creative ideas and although the final design has been produced by us, the local community have played a major role in its development. “There is very little contemporary public artwork in North Sheffield, so the new piece will be a great landmark for the village.” Robin and Sara are currently applying to the Arts Council to fund the sculpture project which will cost £15,000 in total. However, they need to raise £2,000 as match-funding to enable them to apply for the grant. Up-Cycle is being relocated to Bradfield School. The new sculpture will be installed in its place. To find out how to make a donation contact Robin at gothamd.metalwork@btinternet.com. The deadline for funding is Mid-June. For more information on the journey so far, visit www.worralltdfsculpture.blogspot.co.uk.

Sporty success at Wharncliffe Side Primary School Wharncliffe Side School is celebrating after being rewarded for its commitment to increasing competitive sport opportunities for pupils through The School Games. A team of pupils are being trained to be sports leaders, while two have been writing a sports blog, for which they have won a £400 prize. The school will invest the money in sports equipment which will benefit all the pupils in the school. Schools are encouraged to blog about their competitive school sport activities so schools, parents and the wider community can see what is on offer for their pupils. Their latest blog post focuses on the Mile a Day challenge in which year 5 and 6 pupils run one mile around the school grounds every day. The School Games, supported by National Lottery funding from Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust, provides a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country by encouraging them to take part in competitive school sport. Ali Oliver, interim chief executive officer at the Youth Sport Trust said: “We would like to congratulate and thank Wharncliffe Side Primary school for the great job they are doing with offering competitive sport to more young people. “At the Youth Sport Trust we recognise and promote the value and importance of competitive school sport not only to drive physical activity levels, but also to develop young people’s life skills, character and resilience. “There is now an overwhelming amount of evidence that indicates active young people do better in school and life.” Nigel Hartley, year 5/6 teacher and sports coordinator added: “Pupils develop skills which transfer to the classroom with pupils showing higher levels of concentration, social skills, team work and co-operation.” The School Games is supported by a range of partners including the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Sport England, Youth Sport Trust, Department of Health and British Paralympic Association.

S6 events

The musical director at Loxley Silver Band has set himself a weight loss challenge. “My aim is to lose three stone by the end of July,” said Lee Dunkley. “And whilst benefiting myself, I'm very much hoping to benefit Loxley Silver Band by raising some money towards a new instrument. “I express my huge thanks in advance for both your encouragement and support. I am suggesting £1 per pound, but all donations will be gratefully received.” Loxley Silver Band is a hard working brass band based in north Sheffield. The not-for-profit band supports children and adults to learn and play music, provides brass band music at a number of community events and has recently started a veterans band especially for mature brass instrument players who just like to regularly play together. All donations to Lee’s challenge will be used to buy new instruments. The band is hoping to buy a new tuba, which will cost around £6,000. To donate visit www.localgiving.org/fundraising/leetubaman.

Celebration fit for the Queen Oughtibridge Primary School celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday with lots of music and singing. They also researched her life, creating time lines and had a party. The school was filled with balloons, bunting and the Union Jack flag flew high. The children particularly enjoyed looking at the differences between life in 1926 and 2016.

Rain Rescues specialises in finding loving homes for abandoned cats and dogs with no hope – and you can help. s the saying goes, a dog is for life, not just for Christmas, but despite Sheffield having one of the highest canine rehoming rates in the country, there are still many in desperate need of a loving home. Luckily, for those animals that find themselves in the care of dog and cat rescue charity Rain Rescue, there is a silver lining. John and Cassie Hirst, of the Old Horns Inn and The Plough in Bradfield, are two of the many people who have adopted a dog from the charity. When their two-year-old border collie Layla died of Addison’s disease in 2013, they had no plans to find another dog to replace her. But when a friend at Highfield Vets introduced them to Nelly – a dog that had been rescued by Rain Rescue and taken for treatment – they couldn’t resist. Nelly was just one of 200 dogs that the charity took in, nursed back to health and re-homed at the time. Cassie said: “She was found wandering the streets, with a severe mouth infection and they had to take most of her teeth out.” Despite now only having two teeth left, Nelly is a happy, healthy dog with a home, thanks to the care of Rain Rescue. This small charity operates in South Yorkshire and is dedicated to helping cats and dogs in crisis. It is run entirely on donations and was started as a voluntary group by Jacquie Neilson and husband Steve in 2002. It became a charity in 2006 and they have since helped thousands of animals in desperate need. Jacquie and Steve visit dog pounds around Yorkshire on a weekly basis and rescue as many dogs as they can. Although they care for all kinds of dogs, they try to rescue those that are less likely to be re-homed, like older dogs and those needing medical care. Although the charity started off only helping dogs, they noticed an increase in the amount of kittens being dumped and abandoned so they started taking in cats too. The animals are looked after at closed kennels in Arbourthorne, meaning the public can’t just pop in for a wander round. This is because research has shown that dogs in kennels are much more stressed when strangers are present, so they show negative behaviours such as barking and pacing, which subsequently lowers their chance of being rehomed. The closed kennels allow the animals, many of which have been abused and are very nervous, to help build their confidence and become familiar with the staff. When Cassie saw all the fantastic work the charity was doing, she started volunteering at Rain Rescue, cleaning out the kennels and taking dogs for walks. While she was there, she came across a brown collie,

A

who looked so similar to Layla that Cassie adopted her and called her Lola. If you think you have found a dog or cat that you’d like to adopt, or would like Rain Rescue to find a match for you, then you need to fill out the home-finder form on their website to get an idea of which cat or dog would be best suited to you. Animals available to adopt can be found at www.rainrescue.co.uk, which features a photograph, a small biography and other useful information. For general enquiries email info@rainrescue.co.uk. PROMOTIONDON VALLEY WINDOWS SYSTEMS

Let Don Valley Window Systems open up your home and transform your world. sn’t it time you saw the light? There’s a simple and easy way to maximise your living space without breaking the bank. Everyone knows the brighter a room, the larger it looks. Open up your home and let the outside world in through good glazing, or even a conservatory, and you’ll be amazed at the results. Family-run local business Don Valley Window Systems built a strong reputation as a premier supplier of PVC windows, doors and conservatories to the trade and commercial sector. The company is headed by Adam Hodgson and new director John Naylor who bring a wealth of experience to this long standing company. Offering a wide selection of window styles or manufactured in a whole host of new colours. Many examples of their work can be seen in and around the Sheffield Six area. A fine example of their work is the striking Moor Bank Crescent (pictured), for which Don Valley supplied all of the windows. They have also been approved by the Ministry of Defence to replace the windows and doors at the Manor Top TA centre. From large projects such as these, to a simple onewindow replacement, they do it all. If your property would benefit from adding a bay or bow window, with stained or patterned glass, no matter what colour finish or bespoke size frames you require, everything is possible. They also offer a wide range of quality doors with styles ranging from fully-glazed or half-glazed to paneled and fitted with frosted, patterned or stained glass. Whether you want an inward or outward opening, or a low-access wheelchairfriendly threshold, the door is designed to meet your exact specifications. French-style sliding patio doors, as well as

I

composite and bi-fold doors, are also available and suit the majority of high security locking systems. The possibilities don’t end there. If you are looking to increase the floorspace of your home, the extensive selection of Victorian, Edwardian, gable ended, p-shaped, p-shaped hipped, double hipped and lean-to conservatories could be the perfect solution. Finish and glazing styles can be matched to your existing windows and doors, and the company’s team of experts can advise the best conservatories to complement the style of your property. Don Valley Window Systems value their reputation for reliability and quality, but also strive to bring their customers the very latest in glazing products. One example of this is the state-of-the-art A-rated energy saving glass, which can be fitted into any product. This system keeps the heat in and can significantly reduce your home’s carbon footprint as well as your energy costs. All products are supplied by VEKA – the first company in the UK to carry an A-rating – and come with comprehensive tenyear insurance backed warranty. The team of installation engineers is headed up by Dave Cuthbertson, who has more than 20 years’ experience in the window industry. All engineers are Certass approved, timeserved joiners and are able to advise customers on any aspect of their double glazing requirements. So how does the process work? A highly knowledgeable surveyor will visit your home to conduct an initial survey, and you will receive a written quotation by post. You’re then able to make a decision in your own time, with no pressure or obligation to purchase. To find out more, call John Naylor on 07846 298 132. Quiet Day at Sacred Heart, Forbes Road, Hillsborough Saturday 9th July 2016 Last September, Sacred Heart Church at Hillsborough held a Quiet Day, offering people the opportunity to reflect on the themes promoted by Pope Francis - the joy of the Gospel, our care for the earth, and the mercy of God. The mercy of God has been the focus of attention in our prayer and action over the last few months, and we intend to hold another Quiet Day on Saturday 9th July, to develop our relationship with God and our neighbour. We will start at 9.30am with registration and coffee in Sacred Heart Hall, in the school playground (access from Ripley Street). Then the first session will take place in church at 10am, with prayer and introduction by Fr Shaun and Deacon Tony. Quiet time will follow for half an hour, and people will choose where to go on the premises, the church, the presbytery, the memorial garden, according to their choice of prayer style and leadership, or quietly wander round Fr Michael will give a talk in the next session in church:, followed by another quiet half hour, and then we will have lunch in the hall – bring your own food but drinks are provided. Finally we will have a celebration of the Eucharist, an encounter with the mercy of God through word and sacrament, finishing at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come, whether a quiet day is familiar to them or whether it would be a new experience. There's no charge, but we would like people to book so that we know how many to expect, roughly. You can do this by email sacredheart479@btinternet.com or by telephone on 0114 2343580, leaving your name and contact details.

2016 is a big year for the Regional Magazine Company (RMC) as we launch our 30th anniversary celebrations - and we are looking for other businesses who have managed to stand the test of time to join in the fun. Our story started way back in 1986 when the first copy of our first magazine, Westside, was published. We’ve grown considerably since then into a company that publishes nine monthly lifestyle and business titles across Yorkshire, North Notts and North Derbyshire, as well as publishing books for some of Great Britain’s most prestigious restaurants. We also have a strong online presence and we’ll be celebrating our 30th with a major relaunch of our website. 1986 was the year Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson, Gary Lineker set a UK transfer record when he moved to Barcelona for £2.75million, Margaret Thatcher opened the M25 and the first episode of Casualty was aired. Since then, as anyone who has been in business the same length of time will know, there have been good times as well as upsets, recessions and major changes across the world. So, if you also set up your business in the year of 1986, congratulations on standing the test of time and here’s a birthday gift from RMC for you. We are offering a free advert in one of our titles. There’s no catch - it’s as simple as that. Contact: jillion.wood@regionalmagazine.co.uk to find out more.

SIXERMOTORING

START YOUR ENGINES Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club are bringing The Sheffield Motor Show back to the city centre once again. Fiona Barber looks at what’s in store.

The brand new Volkswagen Tiguan could be at the show

ar-lovers rejoice! The Sheffield Motor Show is back for a third year running and, with at least eight local dealers showcasing cars from 27 different manufacturers, it is set to be the best yet. This year, the show takes place on 4 and 5 June and over 65 new cars will be displayed at The Peace Gardens, at the front of the Town Hall, on the boulevard on Pinstone Street and Barkers Pool. The show is a rare opportunity for local dealers to showcase cars in the city centre and, for anyone in search of a new car, it offers the chance to view all the newest models in one place. Dealers and manufacturers already on the list include Burrows with Toyota, Europa with Subaru, Robins and Day with Peugeot, Pentagon Group with

Vauxhall and Jeep, JCT with Porsche, VW Commercial, VW, Audi and Mercedes, Lookers with Ford, Bristol Street Motors with Volvo, Tesla with two electric cars and Evans Halshaw with Renault – but organiser Roger Hart of Sheffield Vulcan Rotary Club says there is still room for another 15 cars. “We would love to fill the space. With Last year’s event The Peace Gardens there are fantastic photo opportunities for dealers to have their cars on show in Sheffield city centre with the Town Hall and the fountains. The council have even offered to allow us to colour the fountains, so they will be in blue to match our rotary colours.” The Lord Mayor will attend on the Saturday to present certificates to all of the dealers and, as well as the many cars on display, there will also be family

entertainment including a stilt walker, balloon modelling and face painting for little ones and the 200ft Star Flyer carousel on Fargate for any adrenaline junkies. Roger, who has always had a passion for cars says: “It’s not very often that you get an opportunity for rotary to show itself in such a big way. We are hoping this year that we shall have brand new models that might not have been seen before. One is likely to be a Ford and there is a chance we will get a brand new Volkswagen Tiguan at the show, but until that car arrives in Sheffield we won’t know.” Last year proved to be a huge success and funds raised from the show were divided between eight charities, including the rotary club’s own charity fund, which is used as a reserve to help people in need. Most recently, the club sent funds to a rotary club in Cumbria to help with the flooding crisis. They also help those in international disaster zones – including the Nepal earthquake – by buying and sending ShelterBoxes, which contain emergency aid such as tents and mosquito nets. The rest of last year’s money, £400, was donated to local Sheffield charities including Sheffield Helipad Appeal, Cavendish Cancer Care, the Research and Medical Treatment Lounge at

Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Roundabout, which helps young people who have lost contact with home and are trying to find their way in life.. “The rotary club has a speaker each week, so people come and give us a talk about their work and we consider if they are eligible for a New models from Ford fund or a donation,” Roger explains. “Sometimes we will give them £50, it might be £100, but if we see a specific thing for them or they can say: that £400 will come in really handy for something, we specifically apply it. The medical and research treatment lounge, for example, wanted some DVD players because they have children from two to 16 years old, and some can bring in their own iPads, but others can’t afford them, so they wanted some replacement DVDs.” To find out more about the Sheffield Motor Show, or for car dealers that want to be involved call Roger Hart on 07831 305881.

Smithy Garage in Bradfield can take care of all motor needs from servicing to repair, and also offer a number of services to ensure vehicles are running as cost efficiently as possible. This includes a re-chipping service for diesel drivers, where an electronic chip is inserted into the car to increase fuel efficiency and improve the overall performance of the car. This diesel particle can be costly to replace, but Smithy Garage are one of a number of nationwide approved dealers who can offer alternatives to a complete replacement at a fraction of the price. Rather than charging inflated prices, Smithy Garage operate a fair and honest pricing system, building up trusting relationships with customers. Owner Steve Hammond believes that sustaining these relationships is the best way to attract business and many of their customers come from recommendations. The garage also offers a full MOT service. “Drivers often think they have to go back to the garage they bought their car from to be serviced or get their MOT, but they don’t,” said Steve. “These garages will often charge a heavily inflated price and
