14 ello and welcome to our May issue of Sixer. This month we’re looking ahead to The Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. In recognition of her 70 years on the throne, we have an extra bank holiday on 2 June and there will be lots taking place over those four days, from street parties and concerts to barbecue and even a speciallybrewed beer. We look at how you can mark the occasion on page 16. Elsewhere we speak to local farrier Stuart Shepherd, dine at a cool Italian-inspired cafe and have your usual mix of property, motoring and more. See you next month.

JUBILEE
Bradfield Brewery It’s not very often we get to see a Platinum Jubilee hence why Bradfield Brewery could not pass up on an opportunity to brew a celebratory ale for the special occasion. The limited edition Farmers Jubilee Ale has been brewed using British malt and hops from across the Commonwealth to produce a Pale Ale fit for royalty. Nelson Sauvin hops from New Zealand partnered with Archer hops from the UK offer up their stoned fruit flavours which are complemented with a sharp but juicy finish to this 5.2% ABV ale. This celebratory ale will be available in cask, bottles and mini kegs from 16 May, while stocks last. Act Swiftly to reduce your energy bills NEALE JACKSON FROM SWIFT GAS PROVIDES SOME ENERGY SAVING TIPS. he energy price cap rose on 1 April, affecting the household bills of around 22 million homes in the UK. The cap is the maximum amount that energy suppliers can charge for their energy. Energy bills have increased by an average 54 per cent, with some homeowners left paying an extra £100 per month. As we approach the summer months, the heating can be turned off due to the warmer climate, but maintaining your heating system should not be ignored. Neale Jackson from Swift Gas provides some energy saving tips to help alleviate the rising energy prices.
T
Neale on a recent power flush, local advertising at the bottom of Loxley Road
Replace your old boiler A boiler that’s over 15 years old, expensive to run or regularly breaking down should be replaced. A new boiler is a good investment to help cut your bills. Approximately half of household energy bills come from heating our property. A new boiler will be more efficient, use less fuel to heat and help reduce the carbon footprint.
Service your boiler An annual service to maintain your heating system should always be undertaken by a Gas Safe registered engineer. The boiler and all parts inside will be checked, examined for leaks and the boiler pressure measured. A yearly check-up can help keep energy bills down. Included within the boiler service, Neale will carry out a free energy saving check on the heating system and offer professional advice on improvements which will save money. Book a boiler service after a summer of infrequent use. You’ll then be all set to power on once the colder days and night approach.
Fit thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs) TRVs are the best way of getting the temperature in your home just right. Used in combination with a room thermostat, they adjust the heat and prevent rooms from overheating. The 24 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
main function of a TRV is to control the air temperature of a space and automatically adjust the amount of hot water entering the radiator to which they are attached. A ‘comfortable’ home temperature is 18-22 . Turning a TRVs down by just one degree can help reduce heating bills considerably.
Invest in a smart thermostat Smart thermostats connect your heating system to the internet. The temperature of your property can be controlled via a smart phone, tablet or computer.Together with smart room thermostats, you can remotely control the heating.WIFI heating thermostats can track entry or exit movements to and from your property, and automatically reduce or increase heating temperature accordingly.
Power flush your heating system A power flush unit forces high pressure water through the heating system to dislodge sludge, rust and other debris. This process should be carried out by a qualified central heating engineer. This helps improve the efficiency and lifespan of both the boiler and central heating system. In addition to a regular service, power flushing is the best way to keep your heating system in shape and help prevent breakdowns.
Install underfloor heating (UFH)
Neale Jackson has worked in the plumbing, heating and gas industry for nearly 30 years. Boiler servicing from Swift Gas starts from £75 (depending on make and model) which includes central heating, radiator and thermostat checks. Get in touch to discuss how Swift Gas can implement energysaving solutions to help keep your home cosy and you (and your wallet) happy.
Using radiant heat technology, UFH gently warms room spaces directly from the ground up. Initial installation costs may be off-putting, but the heating system connected to a UFH runs at a considerably lower temperature than traditional radiators.
If you book a boiler service Neale will carry out a free energy saving check on the heating system and offer professional advice on improvements which will save money. Phone Neale at Swift Gas on 07733 605734 before this winter and start making savings now.

EATING OUT
Sunday best ALISON HULLEY FINDS THE PERFECT START TO THE DAY AT FOX VALLEY. n many countries around the world, heading out for breakfast or brunch seems to be very much part of the usual Sunday routine. We don’t seem as eager in Britain to leave our beds and head for the nearest restaurant or cafe to tuck into fresh coffee, juice, delicious pastries or eggs, which is a shame, because it really sets you up for the day. Hopefully we’ll catch on. Keen to buck the trend we headed out bright and early to the Fox Valley Shopping Centre, which has been a welcome addition to north Sheffield since it opened almost six years ago. The dining quarter, in particular, is an area that has grown from strength to strength offering everything from fine Mediterranean cuisine to afternoon tea. Raffina Coffee Shop is situated in the Independent Quarter of the shopping centre and has built a reputation as the place to go for good quality coffee, teas and light snacks such as soups, sandwiches, toasties and all day breakfast dishes. There’s gluten free, vegetarian and
I
vegan options and also on offer are cream teas or afternoon teas too. The full menu is available to eat in or take away. It has been under new management for just over a year; manager Brendan and supervisor Dan have brought many years of barista experience in order to offer a high brand standard and quality service whilst still retaining a personal homely feel. You can be assured of a warm friendly welcome and can choose to sit inside the modern bright shop or take advantage of the outdoor seating area. We visited on a Sunday morning and there was a nice buzz to the place with many regular returning customers as well as new faces. After looking at the extensive coffee and tea menu we opted for Americano – the coffee we had was of a high quality. Also on offer were a selection of cold drinks and milkshakes made fresh to order. The all-day breakfast menu was in full swing and although tempted by dishes including waffles with maple syrup, we opted for toasted teacakes, which were
nicely browned and served promptly with real butter. The perfect start to the day. We were tempted by the many cakes and treats on offer but perhaps not for breakfast - maybe a return visit is on the cards to sample these sweet delights. Raffina is a bright and airy space and the staff very welcoming. It was a great place to start the day, perfect if you’re planning on doing a spot of shopping at Fox Valley or travelling further afield. Sunday mornings are made for going out - it’s the new staying in. Raffina Fox Valley, S36 2AB Tel: 0114 252 7777 raffina.co.uk

Lasered emerald ring
Laser guide
Lasered solitaire ring
Nice and precise PA JEWELLERY’S COMPACT LASER UNIT CERTAINLY PACKS A PUNCH TO ACCURATELY ENHANCE DELICATE JEWELLERY PIECES. t PA Jewellery our goldsmithing is pr imar ily car r ied out using very traditional techniques, with blowtorches, ffiiles, and hammers. However, every now and then we need a more moder n edge, and that’s where the laser welder comes in. If we have a job that requires ultraprecision then our little welding unit is very helpful. It has a highly magniffiied eyepiece which allows us to see every tiny detail and reach spaces that we couldn’t nor mally. The main reason that we got our laser welder was to allow us to complete repairs that would not withstand being exposed to the heat of our blowtorches, for example working next to delicate stones (like the emerald pictured), or working on hollow items where the metal is very thin and might be at r isk of meltiing. There are more beneffiits than we initially considered though, from welding base/non-precious metals to ffiilling in
A

engravings. It’s a wonderful piece of kit! So, what is it? And what does it do? Laser is actually an acronym and stands for ‘light ampliffiication by th he stimulated emission of radiation’ (one to remember for your next tr ivia night!), and what th he laser in our machine does is very accurately melt a tiiny spot of metal, causing it to displace and join to whatever is next to it. We can also use laser wire (very ffiine wire) to add mater ial where needed or strrengthen a join. You can think of laser welding as a bit like stitching. Traditional solder ing bonds ttw wo pieces togeth her by entirely ffiilling the space between th hem, like glue, whereas laser-welding bonds pieces in a slightly more surface-level way, like stitching around all the sides of an object. This means that laser-welding is ideal for small joins on ffiine objects, but less suited to large joins such as resizing a chunky r ing. Occasionally when we’re doing very
fiddly work with multiiple tiiny pieces we fi wish that we could just hold them in the r ight position with th our hands - with our welding unit our wishes have come true! A few quick zaps and the bits are all stayiing perfectly where they should be, then we can per manently solder them in place (what a gamechanger!). If you come to PA Jewellery for a repair, most of the tiime we will use traditional techniques, but we will always do what is best for your jewellery so sometimes we will decide that a laser repair is most suitable. Hopefully you will now have a better understanding of what is involved in that case. Should you have any questions, feel free to comment on our social media or drop in for a chat, we’d be happy to answer th hem. Thousands of people are expected to converge on the 105-acre Chatsworth Estate, owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, for a weekend of equestr ian excellence. But whilst you may marvel at the majesty of the horses on display, spare a thought for those working hard behind the scenes to make sure the animals are in the best possible condition. One of the key roles in a horse’s welfare is the far r ier, who looks after all aspects of hoof care. A qualiffiied far r ier will have detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology of th he horse’s legs and hooves, combined with skilled metal working, allowing them to tr im and balance horse’s feet as well as make and ffiit shoes for each individual horse. A far r ier also deals with injured or diseased hooves and will often work to provide remedial care working closely with vets and other equine professionals. Stuart Shepherd grew up on a far m and always wanted to work with animals but wasn’t interested in the far ming aspect. Far r iery proved to be the perfect compromise. Here he tells us about far r iery, what it involves and the role it plays in a horse’s welfare.
T
What is a farrier?
A far r ier is a qualiffiied person who specialises in equine foot care. How did you become one?
Growing up on a farm I used to watch my famiilly’s farrier come to shoe th he horses. One day after I had helped sort out tth he horses ready for him to shoe, he offered to take me with him for some work kiing experience. I have always enjoyed work outside and I ffiind it very satisfying being able to care for the animals. Did you always want to be a farrier?
Yes and no! I knew I wanted to work with animals but I wasn’t interested in far ming. Far r iery was a good compromise. I could still work outside and with animals but it is very different to far ming. How long have you been in the job?
I have worked as a qualiffiied far r ier for 18 years but including my trraining I have been in th he trade for 24 years. What education or skills are needed to become a farrier?
“A qualified farrier wiill have detailed w knowledge of anatomy and physiolog gyy of the horse’s legs and hooves, combined wiith skilled metal w working.”
A minimum of ffiive GCSEs grades A-C (or moder n equivalent), three of which must be Science, Math hs and English. A four and a half year apprenticeship must then be completed, dur ing which both wr itten and practiical examinations are taken. Once qualiffiied you must practice under the rules and regulations of the Far r ier’s Registration Council. Is there a common misconception people have about what you do?
Yes, people think we ear n lots of money! We don’t! The biggest misconception I have found is that people don’t realise how much training is involved. Not just in how to physically make and ffiit shoes on a horse, but also the amount of studying involved to lear n and understand the anatomy and physiology of horses lower limbs.

To properly look after a horse’s feet you must understand how they work and the causes and treatments for many different complaints. What’s the best part of your job?
Helpiin ng a lame horse to become sound again. It is very rewardiin ng to assist a horse who is suffering to o become paiin n ffrree again. Anything you dislike?
Shoeing in the rain! What’s the most challenging thing?
It is very physically demanding. Horses are big and some lean on yo ou while yo ou are working, otth hers pull and just picking up their feet can sometiimes be challenging especially if the horse is new to being shod. How many horses do you work on in a week?
It var ies but on average 16-20 per week. 52 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
Do you work mainly locally?
Yes, I cover most of Shefffiield and parts of th he Peak Distrr ict. What’s been a career highlight for you?
I am lucky to have great customers, some of whom I have worked with since the beginning of my career. Working with people who share my passion for equine care makes my job enjoyable. I have built great relatiionships with h both my customers and the horses over the years. In partiicular, working with a horse recover ing from a ser ious accident was a career highlight, lots of time and different techniques ensured that a horse that was unlikely to have much of a future was able to get back into work and be back to being health hy and happy. Have you worked on any racehorses?
Yes, but I only used to do amateur racehorses (point to point).
How do you deal with high pressure situations?
Calmly and methodically. Animals pick up on stress and anxiety so it is important to stay relaxed. What advice would you give someone looking to do this job?
Find a far r ier to g ive yyo ou some work exper ience. It is best to choose an approved training far r ier (ATF) as whilst any far r ier can give yo ou work exper ience, only an ATF can offer apprenticeships. Before you decide to do this job and undertake the training you need to be sure it is what you want to do. It is not just a job, it’s more like a way of life and it is very physically demanding!

Fifth anniversary!
Gala ball success Weston Park’s 50th anniversary Gala Ball raised more than £70,000 to support cancer care, research and treatment advances in our region. Two years on from the original date, the event celebrated 50 years of advances in cancer care in Sheffield and the surrounding areas. Given the two-year delay in holding it due to the pandemic, it also reflected on the remarkable efforts which have been made throughout Covid-19 to be there for people facing cancer still – it was quite an emotional night.
After Covid almost took her business away, Kate Watson made the bold move of relocating her laser hair removal business from Stannington to Kelham Island. The Retreat is now based at SteelYardKelham and Kate is enjoying being part of this community. Here clients like how easy it is to access the clinic now. “I’ve since added the GeneO+ to my kit and now as well as laser hair removal, veins and pigment I offer Radio Frequency and other facials and peels,” Kate added. Total Warrior challenge When he’s not providing us with his ‘Views from the Roofs’ Simon Slater is no stranger to doing his bit for charity. Next month, alongside himself, Tom, his daughter Chloe and son-in-law Jonny are taking part in Total Warrior to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society. It’s a charity that is close to Simon’s heart as his mum Linda was diagnosed with the disease five years ago. Total warrior is a 12km, 25 obstacle mud run in Leeds. The quartet are hoping to raise as much money as possible – you can donate to their JustGiving page by clicking here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/slatersaerials?utm_so urce=Sharethis&utm_medium=fundraising&utm_content=slat ersaerials&utm_campaign=pfpemail&utm_term=17dd3eefb75543958e59e4feef341de8
Join the Tuk-Tuk team Join the Tuk-Tuk team as city homelessness charity Emmaus Sheffield launches a campaign for new volunteer support. Emmaus Sheffield is the working community with quality, self-contained accommodation, training facilities and a workspace for previously homeless men and women aged 18 years and over. It aims through its Social Enterprise programme to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions - to eventually become self-supporting once more. One of the charity’s main fundraising schemes is its extremely popular second hand store at the organisation’s headquarters in the historic Sipelia Works, a former cutlery factory at Cadman Street, close to the city’s Canal Basin. Now the retail team is hoping to attract volunteer Transit or Luton van drivers to help with retail donation collections and deliveries. And there will also be a chance to drive the distinctive Emmaus Tuk-Tuk at promotional events. “Ideally we would like to hear from people who are willing to give one or two days per week as a volunteer but whatever the time you have available, give us a call and we can have a chat,” said Emmaus Sheffield Deputy Manager Charley Fedorenko. 58 www.rmcmedia.co.uk
