THE TRADITIONAL PATHWAY TO BETTER HEALTH Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been used by millions of people for thousands of years, and have been developed into an effective healing system by the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans.

The Chinese have identified and classified the properties of thousands of herbs and have learnt how they work to heal the body. LOCAL COMPANY DESIGN AND BUILD SHOW GARDEN BASED ON OUTDOOR LIVING FOR ‘ARTS IN THE GARDEN’ FESTIVAL. he annual ‘Art in the Gardens’ festival has been held in Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens for many years and is one of the largest outdoor art events in the north of England. This year’s event, which took place 2-3 September, included a new ‘Home and Garden’ area that featured ideas for the increasing popular theme of ‘outdoor living’. The centrepiece of this new section of the festival was a fabulous contemporary show garden created by local company daVally Garden Services. Based at Rawson Spring Road (opposite Hillsborough football ground), this family-run business is rapidly becoming one of South Yorkshire’s leading garden design and maintenance companies. The managing director, Dave Caborn, was excited by the chance to showcase ideas based on the theme of outdoor living and explained: “The team love taking on a challenge and worked to a tight schedule that saw the garden built in just four days. Our overall aim was to inspire the imagination and

use quality products to show visitors how we can make the garden a well-used part of their home.”
Another successful event The weather held and the 2017 event proved to be a great success for the organisers. With over 8,000 people visiting over the weekend, the Council has already announced the festival will return to the Botanical Gardens next year. Around 300 artists and craft workers exhibited their work. The range of creativity on display included photography, ceramics, textiles, printmaking, leatherwork, wood turning, glass work, jewellery, plus sculptures in metal, wood, and stone. Councillor Mary Lea, cabinet member for culture, parks and leisure at Sheffield City Council, said: “Art in the Gardens is one of our premier events in Sheffield and, with such a range of arts, crafts and live demonstrations, it’s easy to see why it remains so popular, year after year.” @SixerRMC

Garden features daVally’s show garden included various examples of paving and fencing along with some of the latest artificial turf. It also featured a couple of summerhouses, with the bi-fold door version proving to be a great hit with visitors. The area included some contemporary outdoor kitchen ideas, with slate worktops and state-of-the-art barbecues. All of this complemented by a six-person hot tub that underlined the theme of outdoor living and attracted a lot of interest. Dave Caborn explained: “We are passionate about outdoor living and are always delighted to meet anyone looking for ideas to make more use of their garden. The company offers a full range of services from simple maintenance to a full garden design and makeover. We take great pride in our work and are accredited installers for the UK’s leading supplier of landscape products.”

REPORT BY THE CHAIRMAN uddenly, it’s October. I’m not quite sure where the time went either, but I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and that autumn is off to a great start. Firstly, I would like to say it is an honour to take over the position of Chairman, and thank my predecessor Councillor Vickie Priestley wholeheartedly for all her work, and for providing a solid platform from which I can now lead. Since I took over the role just a few months ago, I have relished having the opportunity to attend and take part in some of the many wonderful community events that have taken place. From the Bradfield Music Festival in June, to opening and attending both the Stannington and Worrall Gala, it’s been a pleasure to represent the Council at some of these great milestones in our parish.

In celebration of our beautiful national park, I also turned out to support the Friends of the Peak District as they set off on a 190-mile walk around its entire boundary. And waved off 16 Vintage tractors at the start of the Holmfirth Charity Tractor Run, as they set off on the 280 mile journey from Midhopstone to Llandudno to raise funds for the Royal British Legion. Finally, this just leaves me to say that I look forward to the many other local events that will be taking place throughout the coming months, in particular Christmas, when I will be hosting our annual Christmas card competition and Christmas tea party for the finalists, with the winner having the honour of switching on the Christmas lights for the Parish. Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership is a new project based around the reservoirs of north-west Sheffield, led by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, as part of its national landscape partnerships initiative. The project offers an opportunity to bring a range of partners and land managers together to help develop a common vision for the long term protection of the area’s natural and built heritage, and to celebrate the things that make this part of the world so special. Although not set in stone, the proposed project boundary is shown on the map above, stretching from Langsett to Redmires. In the west, the boundary begins at the moorland slopes and watershed, and in the east the area is bounded by the River Don and follows through the urban fringe of Sheffield as far as Malin Bridge. The Partnership area encompasses High Bradfield, Low Bradfield, Dungworth, Stocksbridge, Deepcar, Wharncliffe Side, Oughtibridge, Bolsterstone, Midhopestones, Worrall, Loxley and Stannington.
Over the summer, Sheffield Lakeland Landscape Partnership spoke to around 350 people about their concerns, and what matters most in the area, and generated this word cloud from the results the larger the word, the more times it came up in conversation. The project has four broad outcomes: A more connected and resilient landscape in which landowners agree a joint vision for the future care and management of the area (Landscape Conservation Action Plan) A better natural environment for people and wildlife, with a shared understanding of what makes the area special and the vital eco-system services the area provides A deeper understanding of the area's rich cultural heritage A landscape for all to learn about, value, experience, enjoy and feel part of the area

Partnership is a key element of the project and the programme will bring together a range of organisations, with support and encouragement already coming from Bradfield Parish Council, Yorkshire Water, Sheffield City Council, Stocksbridge Town Council, Natural England and the Environment Agency, as well as representatives of landowners and local community action groups. Many more organisations will come together to contribute over the lifetime of the project and anyone who has a particular interest in the area or a project in mind is encouraged to contact programme manager Keith Tomkins, or consultation and engagement officer Claire Watts on 0114 263 4335.

Friends of Coronation Park “I’m the only one in Coronation Park this morning, even the groundsman is away on other duties. The heron is quietly fishing in the shallows of the River Don and a kingfisher darts upstream through a patch of early sunshine. “The weather has changed; already it’s mid-September, how fast the year has flown. This week, with some disbelief, I will celebrate my 70th birthday. Where have all the years gone, in what seems to be the blink of an eye? “How many hours, days or years have I spent enjoying these special acres? Quite some time has been spent trying to defend it from the attention of the city planners, and more raising funds and organising activities for young people to do during the long school holidays. “Through the years there have been many events: sports nights, village galas, concerts, and, in more recent years, summer activities organised by the Friends of Coronation Park. Funding this year has come mainly from the Lottery, but over time it has been supported by a number of other organisations, such as Bradfield Parish Council. This support allows the Friends to offer these activities without
charge, which is very important, particularly to young families. “The autumn school term has started, but the memories of summer 2017 are still fresh in our minds; I met proud grandparents, watched toddlers enjoy the swings and climbing frames, and the older children on the castles provided by Sheffield Bouncy Castle Hire. “I saw entire families joining in environmental challenges thought up and organised by the Steel Valley Project, and events organised by South Yorkshire Orienteering, not to mention climbing walls, zorb balls and other challenging equipment provided by DB Entertainment. “Next year, the Friends will have to seek alternative funds to continue the programme, as the Lottery don’t allow reapplication straight away. So, this is an opportunity for anyone with ideas, or who would like to offer a donation or sponsorship, to contact us through our Facebook page. New members of the group are also most welcome. “The park is shared and valued by so many throughout the year and is well cared for by BPC and its dedicated staff. But we do ask park users to help. Please put your litter in the bins, and, if you’re a dog walker, please pick up after your pet - thank you. “The brisk breeze comes from the north now, the summer has sped by. My grandson is back at school in London and now he can ride a bike – proud to have safely honed another skill in Oughtibridge’s gem. “Time for me to leave and head home for a cup of tea.” – Fran Hay, Friend of Coronation Park
Well Blessing is an ancient ceremony established in the 11th century, continuing throughout the following centuries to bless the St. James Well, dedicated to the farming communities, and the Potters Well, situated in the village of Midhopestones, dedicated to industry. The Grade I listed St. James Church is now administrated by the Penistone and Thurlstone Team Ministry and retains the old service time of 3pm. Established originally so that the farming congregation could attend services between morning and evening milking. This year’s annual Well Blessing took place at St. James Church on 17 September. The day began with The Loxley Silver Band, established over 127 years ago, and led by their musical director Lee Dunkley, playing at The Old Mustard Pot Hotel. After completing their midday repertoire, they walked up Chapel Lane and established themselves in the balcony of the church, where Rev. Anne Parr directed the service, before - led by the band and followed by the congregation conducting the well blessings. Councillor’s Stephen Bennett and Peter and Mavis Butler supported Rev. Parr with Bible readings throughout the service, finishing the blessings at The Potters Well. The weather turned into a downpour as the congregation withdrew from the wells - the band, Reverend, Curate, Councillors and congregation were soaked, but in good humour, as they all retired to the Old Mustard Pot for refreshments.

BUSINESSMAN, ATHLETE PUBLIC SPEAKER AND COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER – RACHEL MARTIN MEETS A YOUNG MAN WHO IS OVERCOMING A DIFFICULT START IN LIFE TO REACH HIS FULL POTENTIAL. unning a business can be a challenge at the best of times, which is why 23-year-old Nathan Hill’s rise to success has been all the more triumphant. When Nathan was 13 months old, he contracted a viral brain infection, which left him with learning difficulties and problems with both his sight and hearing. He was also diagnosed with epilepsy and, like countless others in a similar position, the opportunities to better himself seemed to dry up as soon as he left formal education. Despite this, Nathan has always been determined to live an independent life, and after leaving formal education with no work experience at the age of 16, he enrolled at Henshaws College in Harrogate, a charity supporting people living with sight loss and a range of other disabilities. “There are no places like it in Sheffield,” says Nathan’s mother, Tracy. “But at first, I wasn’t sure going there was the right thing for Nathan. It was such a long way from home, which meant he had to board, and that was a big wrench for me. “However, whatever initial doubts I had were quickly allayed. They gave him selfbelief, which he just hadn’t before, and I think his experience there also gave us confidence in his abilities. We’d always felt Nathan had so much to offer, but sometimes

Quite rightly, John has become an instantly recognisable and widely praised local personality because of his tireless efforts to

when you’re trying to access support it can feel like you’re hitting your head against a brick wall.” Part of Henshaws’ philosophy is to ensure their students leave as independent as possible, and what made Nathan’s three years there so life-changing were the basic life skills he learnt. “Everything they do at Henshaws is geared around the real world. So yes, students are taught English and maths, but it’s in terms of writing a shopping list and working out how much money you need to go to the shops things that will really benefit them in the future. “To a greater or lesser extent, Nathan can now look after himself. They started by teaching him how to make a sandwich and by the end of that first year he was making lasagne. That was such a huge achievement and from there he went on to win an award in hospitality.” Nathan’s Craft’s and Tea Room opened on Stannington Road shortly after Nathan left college in September 2014, with all the work being carried out by Nathans dad, Craig, and has since allowed him to develop his skills even further, and to share them with the local community. With the help of carer Sam Webster - a baker in her own right, Nathan makes lunches, cakes, “brilliant” lemon meringues, and delicious rocky roads, and, in addition to working in the kitchen, he also takes on front of house roles, such as taking orders and payments, socialising with regulars and breaking down societal barriers. Nathan also creates and sell his own cards customers can drop in and buy a card or a handmade card making kit - and the tea room hosts a number of events for the community, including a knit and natter group on Fridays, a monthly journal club, where a group of crafty individuals nominate a member and create a journal dedicated to something special to them, and children’s birthday parties, that can be adapted to the needs of the children. And that’s not all, Nathan has been busy attending WI’s and other women’s groups, to talk about his experiences, assisting with an S6 food bank pop-up collection and volunteering at Manor Oaks Farm once a week looking after the animals and the plants.

And he is currently preparing to bake a batch of purple buns for Jessops neonatal unit, in aid of World Prematurity Day on 17 November. “We are planning to host another food bank pop-up soon and a collection box will also be available inside the tea room year round, to support the ongoing need for donations.” Says Tracy. When he’s not busy in the kitchen, Nathan also competes for Sheffield’s Top Club Athletics – a team he’s been part of since the age of 13 – and most recently he raced to victory in the 200m race at the 2017 Special Olympics GB National Games, the country's biggest sporting event for people with learning difficulties. He continued his sporting endeavours at the Sheffield Hallam University City Athletics Stadium by taking part in the standing long jump, in which he finished seventh, the 100m, where he placed fifth, and the 200m relay later that day. And there’s even more reason to celebrate, as Nathan's friend Heather Longden, who has worked alongside him at the tea room, also earned a gold medal. "They both did so well,” Says Tracy. “It was a very close race but when Nathan reached the finish line we were so proud of him. “He said afterwards that he was pleased with the medal, but he was happier to have simply taken part, and it was really inspiring to see him, and so many other athletes fulfilling their potential." Nathan has made great strides since leaving Henshaws and continues to work towards living a more independent life. And, the business is doing so well, that they now offer placements to other local people with disabilities, and Nathan and his family are continuing to work hard towards increasing the services they currently offer. “I have two other sons and Nathan doesn’t see himself as any different to them. This business has given Nathan the chance to feel a part of the community, and it has become a real social hub. The support we have received has been overwhelming, something we hope to maintain for years to come.” Nathan’s Crafts & Tea Room is open on Wednesdays, Thursday and Fridays. Located on the outskirts of Sheffield in a beautiful rural setting, Wharncliffe Side is a small school providing for children from two to 11 years old. They’re proud of the attitudes and behaviour of pupils and aim for them to be well prepared and enthusiastic for the next stage of their education. The nursery has a small two and three-year-old section and integrated resource facilities for pupils with special needs and disabilities. It also has a well-resourced outdoor area where children enjoy the benefits of learning outdoors, including activities such as forest schools. In the main primary classes, children learn through a crosscurricular topic approach and the staff put a great deal of value on children developing into well-rounded individuals but also they like pupils to develop their own interests and talents such as sport and music. The pupils predominantly move to Bradfield Secondary School but a small number of pupils will go to other schools such as Stocksbridge High School, Forge Valley, Girls High School or one of Sheffield’s specialist schools. THE OLD HORNS The Old Horns is a traditional country pub in the heart of High Bradfield. They are family friendly, dog friendly, and of course, walkerswith-muddy-boots friendly. They offer home-cooked, delicious food at affordable prices. Monday to Friday they serve two meals for £6, 11.30am to 3pm, alongside their varied main menu of pub classics and a daily specials menu, served 11.30 to 9pm. Lomas Hall Nestled in the heart of Stannington, Lomas Hall is a fantastic multifunctional building available for hire. They have two main rooms – the Main Hall with a stage and balcony area, which can accommodate up to 300 people seated (250 people with a bar) and adjacent to the Main Hall is the smaller Knowle Room with a capacity of 60 people. Back to its best MOLLY MCGREEVEY DISCOVERS AN OLD FAVOURITE IS ENJOYING A NEW LEASE OF LIFE. ince 1876 The Hillsborough Hotel has played host to S6’s revellers, from good food to great beer, the pub has been at the heart of the community for hundreds of years. It’s easy to immerse yourself in the history of the place, with vintage beer advertisements adorning the walls alongside snapshots of Hillsborough’s past in black and white. The place feels like a proper pub, the regulars leaning on the bar are keen to recommend their favourite beer, and even four-legged friends are welcome. In 2015, it looked unlikely that the Hillsborough Hotel would remain at the heart of the community, and instead the pub was set to be turned into flats. It was only when Tom Delaney and his wife Bridgette, who had been in charge of the pub in the noughties, were contacted, that the pub was given a new lease of life. The couple set about restoring The Hillsborough Hotel to its former glory, and today the pub is a cosy, welcoming hub. When we visited, the smell of fresh pie filled the air, a temptation that proved too hard to resist when it came to ordering our meal. At The Hillsborough Hotel, the specials menu changes regularly, as does the choice of pie, but pub classics, sandwiches and Sunday

dinners remain a staple. Keen to try as much as we could, my companion and I chose to start our meal with a selection of small plates – the Mini Yorkshire Fishcake (£3.75); Feta, Roast Tomato and Pesto Oil Pasta Kernels (£3.75), and Patatas Bravas with Blue Cheese and Henderson’s Relish sauce (£3.50). Fresh, flavoursome and beautifully presented, this was pub food, but not as you know it. With the temptation of the wafts coming from the kitchen proving too tempting, it had to be the pie of the day for my main – potato, cheese and onion, served with chips and mushy peas. The pie came with a perfect crust, and a cheesy, peppery filling, whilst the chips were chunky, crispy and soon doused in Henderson’s Relish. Across the table, my companion chose the Pan Fried Chicken Breast, Smoked Bacon and Mushroom Fricasse, served with mash and greens. (£8.95). With countless varieties of mushroom and leeks instead of the traditional onion, the thick sauce was rich and delicious, whilst the accompanying kale was the perfect finishing touch. With such filling main courses, making room for dessert was difficult, but with Lemon Drizzle and White Chocolate Ice Cream (£3.95) and the Raspberry Rippler (£3.95) on the menu, resistance proved futile. @SixerRMC
To accompany dessert, a half of Acorn Brewery’s Gorlovka – a full bodied stout with rich, liquorice flavours – one of The Hillsborough Hotel’s seven rotating real ales. Recently featured in the Campaign for Real Ale’s 45th Good Beer Guide, you’ll always find Mojo, a session beer, and Barnsley Bitter on the bar at the Hillsborough, which are joined by a strong beer, a porter, a mild or a stout, depending on the season. For cider fans, a craft cider is always available too.
