A Coronavirus update from Sheffield’s Director of Public Health
We are living in extraordinary times and we continue to take extraordinary measures in order to stay safe during the Coronavirus pandemic. The virus has brought many challenges to our city and, unfortunately, they are challenges we will have to face for some time to come. We are not out of the woods yet, and as such we need to keep playing our part to keep each other safe. We are trying to balance the impact of a dangerous virus with getting back to some form of normal. The virus is very easily transmitted and as we have seen from earlier in the summer carries a significant mortality risk.
Many are of the view that the virus disproportionately affects the elderly. This is true. But increasingly we are aware of many young people who have mild symptoms but are then affected by what is now known as long-Covid, which are long lasting symptoms and this can be very debilitating and seems to affect anyone. For this reason alone we should all do what we can to protect ourselves.
I want to thank the people of Sheffield for your support in continuing to protect each other and our communities by following the safety measures in place. Your continued effort has helped to safeguard our way of life, and has allowed each of us to continue to enjoy all Sheffield has to offer. Acting safely, respectfully and responsibly will help us to fight the spread of infection. I know and appreciate the frustration and repetitiveness that has surrounded the Covid-19 safety messages out there. However, if we are to keep everyone safe, these
003 Sixer Oct20 02/10/2020 09:45 Page 1
messages bear repeating as they are vital in keeping you, our communities and our family and friends safe. Our efforts to slow the spread of the virus locally needs your help. We are doing all we can to prevent any further lockdowns, and the safety of our city and our residents
remains our priority, but we cannot do this in isolation. Prevention is a citywide effort. Sheffield City Council is keen to get the city and the lives of those who live in it, back to normal as soon as possible. We, like you, want to see our live music venues open, a return to our thriving entertainment culture and ensure every pub, gym and club is able to be fully open and be enjoyed by the public. But we can’t just yet. We are not going to be in that position for some time and that is why, together we all have a part to play to stop
At some point we might all be asked to self-isolate because we develop symptoms, or because we are a contact of a case. the spread. As this goes to print, The Government has put new curfews in place to restrict the opening of pubs and restaurants and other hospitality venues. I can guide you as best I can, but the best action is what you take; to wash your hands, wear a face covering and keep your distance. Going back to basics is the best way to combat the virus and limit the spread of the disease. If you have Covid-19 symptoms, resist going to the shops or visiting the pub with your friends. At some point we might all be asked to selfisolate because we develop symptoms, or because we are a contact of a case. This is THE most important thing you can do to reduce spread. It does mean isolate. It is worth thinking through a plan in advance around supplies of food, essentials, medicines. Stay at home and book a test as soon as you can. The more contact we have, the more likely the virus will spread. Limiting social contact is not ideal as we want to see our friends and
#PlayYourPartSheff
family, but it is important. Keep your distance, wear a face covering, wash your hands. And if you want to protect others? Isolate and get tested if you get symptoms. It’s vital that we take responsibility for our own safety first if we are to protect others. We must adhere to the guidance, to remind our friends, families and colleagues of why staying safe is so important. If we want to avoid any further lockdowns or further restrictions, if we want to see the return of our city to the cultural centre it has always been, then stick to the safety measures and we will get there in time. It has taken a huge amount of work and effort for Sheffield to remain open. Please, enjoy Sheffield responsibly, and continue to follow the guidelines. Thank you for all you have done and for playing your part to keep our city safe. Together, we can make a difference. Greg Fell

There’s never been a better time to support your local businesses
elcome to the October edition of Sixer magazine. This month we pay a special tribute to a well-known S6 businessman – and gentleman – Jeff Slator, who passed away recently. Jeff opened his first furniture shop in 1972 under a sign proclaiming a name new to the area – ‘Mr Slator Furnishings’. His granddaughter, Evie WardDrummond, talks about his life and more. Mr Slator Furnishings was a proud independent business and there are lots more to discover in Hillsborough, Ecclesfield, Chapeltown and beyond. We look at the importance of supporting your local businesses and recommend a few to visit. Elsewhere we have some retroinspired home ideas, new season fashion and beauty tips for smoother skin. We look forward to seeing you next month.

LOCAL HERO
Businessman and a gentleman SIXER NOTES WITH REGRET THE PASSING OF WELL-KNOWN LOCAL CHARACTER JEFF SLATOR. HIS GRANDDAUGHTER EVIE WARD-DRUMMOND PAYS SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO A MAN WHOSE NAME WAS FAMILIAR TO THOUSANDS. y Grandad Jeff Slator has died at 81 years of age, but his legacy and the mark he made in the city of Sheffield live on. He was a local cheeky chappie whose life was a real tale of rags to riches. Jeff started his life in Bradford, the secondborn of four siblings, in a house where he shared a bed with his two brothers. It was clear from an early age Jeff would not simply be settling for his lot. As a young boy, and much to his mother’s dismay, he dug up his back garden to make moulds of a toy gun he had found on the street with the aim of making copies to the other kids in the area. Evidently his business brain was working from a young age. At 17, fed up of working in the mines, Jeff decided to sign up to the army. There was one problem. He was too young, so he forged his papers and soon after was posted in Malta where he served for three years.
M
Upon his return he met his wife-to-be Marian at a local dance. With her support, Jeff opened his first furniture shop in 1972 under a sign proclaiming a name new to the area – ‘Mr Slator Furnishings’. The couple raised two children, Nigel and Rachael, and later became grandparents to myself and my younger brother Freddie.Their union lasted 57 years and Jeff ’s whole family were close by in his final days. Jeff ’s life in the community mostly revolved around his furniture shop on
Jeff Slator in his showroom on Infirmary Road
Infirmary Road. He was well known for his catchy jingles on Hallam FM and for his affordable and quality service. Jeff made buying accessible for everybody by introducing interest free instalments and was often seen hand-delivering furniture up the stairwells of the Kelvin Flats with a grin on his face. Through the massive success of his shop, Jeff was able to support his family and friends generously. Jeff will be remembered as a kind, hardworking and approachable man who treated everybody with dignity and respect. His spirit was infectious and those that knew will always hold his cheeky grin in their hearts. The mark he has made on me, his granddaughter, is hard to put into words, I’m proud to have his blood running through my veins. I will endeavour for the rest of my life to walk with a spring in my step, just as he did, to love and trust people, just as he did and be resilient in the pursuit of my dreams, just as he did. www.rmcmedia.co.uk 25

SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL, AND ITS COFFEE AND GIFT SHOP, HAS RE-OPENED TO THE PUBLIC AND HAS SOME VERY SPECIAL FREE EVENTS LINED UP.
heffield Cathedral is a beacon of light for so many people in the city and the site which it occupies has been a place of worship for over 1,000 years. After taking the unprecedented step of having to close during lockdown, in line with government guidelines, it finally reopened to the public in July. Daily services have resumed and at present the Cathedral is open 11am-2pm. In October this will be extended to 10am-4pm. From November the Cathedral is hoping to be able to welcome visitors, 9am5pm.

But there’s so much more to Sheffield Cathedral. The 1554 Coffee & Gift Shop supports the working life of the Cathedral and has proved a big draw for visitors over the years. It also offers a calm environment away from the hubbub of a busy city for both shoppers and office workers. At the time of writing, finishing touches were being put in place to enable the re-opening of the popular award-winning coffee shop, which will be operating with limited opening times (Thursdays and Fridays at first), a reduced menu and table service. Their

Heavenly Coffee range will still be available meaning you can once again enjoy a brew and a slice of one of their many homemade cakes. “The coffee shop had become a busy hub in the heart of the city; a coffee shop built by the Cathedral and for the Cathedral,” said Ruth Maher, Enterprise Business Manager. “We have a lot to learn and adapt to, so please bear with us as we try to find our new normal.” The gift shop re-opened in August and is sited at the entrance to the Cathedral. It stocks everything from cards to candles, bags, confectionary, gift wrap, souvenirs, books, Christian resources and a fantastic range of Sheffield made products including Henderson’s Relish and Printed By us. More recently it has been selling coffee and Our Cow Molly ice cream to take away. To sit alongside the increased opening hours, Sheffield Cathedral will be hosting a number of events in the runup to Christmas, the first of which will be ‘The Leaves of the Trees’. This will run from 3-29 October and is a new touring art installation designed to give people the opportunity to reflect on the impact the Coronavirus pandemic has had on them and their communities. ‘The Leaves of the Trees’ is made up of 5,000 steel leaves, each featuring the word ‘HOPE’. These will be laid out on the floor of the Cathedral, creating an impression of fallen autumn leaves. It was created by sculptor, Peter Walker, who said the leaves were symbolic of the times we were living in: “Steel has
simplicity and beauty of this installation will give people the chance to pause and contemplate their own experience, and also reflect on the wider situation we find ourselves in.” ‘The Leaves of the Trees’ will be followed by ‘The Foundry’ 23 October21 November and ‘In The Beginning’, running 1-6 December. Once again, the exterior of the Cathedral will be illuminated by a spectacular light show. This will be FREE for the whole city to enjoy, being a gift from the Cathedral to the people of Sheffield at the end of a difficult and challenging year for everyone. You can read more about these events in future editions of Westside. Whether you attend for prayer, reflection or a good cup of coffee, visitors are always welcome at Sheffield Cathedral. As the artwork tours the country the steel will age, rust and change colour, just as the leaves of trees do when they fall each year. “In nature fallen leaves are essential to prepare the planet for spring and new growth and it is hoped that the

It’s not just about the weight you lose For most of us lockdown has been tough on the waistline but for a couple of local Slimming World members, with the help and support of their virtual groups, they’ve not only shredded the weight but have gained a whole lot more too. Kelly joined group last summer and hit her target weight losing 7st 4lb just before groups temporarily closed for lockdown. Maintaining that weight loss for a while and then deciding to lower it, she is now 8st lighter and now helping others. She is volunteering with Disability Sheffield working on an online support group to help people with disabilities access different services for health and weight loss in the city. Kelly’s consultant Jo says: “She is such an inspiration to everyone who knows her. She totally embraced food optimising, still eating food she enjoys just cooking it differently.” Bill is also a local slimmer, attends group in Hillsborough and has lost an inspirational 9st. He has recently taken on the challenge to walk five marathons in a week to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Bill’s consultant Christine said: “We are all so proud of him, he really has done amazing, not only his weight loss but he’s changed his life. And not only are he and his family benefiting from his weight loss but a fantastic charity are too.”
Age no barrier You can sit and think about fundraising… or you can follow five-year-old Lila Law’s lead and get on your bike! Lila, who lives with mum and dad Martin and Jess and brother Freddie in Tankersley and is a pupil at Silkstone Primary School, has only just got the hang of life on two wheels. But that didn’t stop her from getting on her bike and raising £150 for South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout. “She’s at that age when she’s starting to understand what it’s like to do something for other people and she was asking me and her mum about charity and what it means,” said Martin. ”When we asked her what she would like to do, she said she’d like to do it for people who don’t have a house or a bedroom to sleep in. “We went online and found out about Roundabout and because it’s a charity for young people, we thought it would be ideal.” Martin also did some research on possible routes and came up with a 15 mile stretch of the Pennine Trail, starting out from Dunford Bridge and then coming back to the family home in Tankersley. “To be honest, we though she might raise £20 or so and we couldn’t believe it when we reached £150. “Money doesn’t mean a lot to her at this age but she does understand how people have supported her.” There’s still time to support Lila and make a contribution. Dig Deep 60 Runner Katie Alexander tells Sixer about her experience of the Dig Deep 60: “I’ve been a regular runner since 2008 and enjoy the benefits it gives such as fitness, time to myself, relieving work stress and making new friends. In January 2018, whilst driving, I had a seizure and went on to be diagnosed with epilepsy. I continued to have seizures fairly regularly but thankfully, the doctors advised that I was still ok to run. “I am now over a year seizure free, which is amazing, and it also meant I felt ready to take on the challenge of running the Dig Deep 60-mile event organised by Rivelin Running Events, which would see me tackling some mega Peak District climbs and being rewarded with epic views. “Despite the uncertainty around whether this event would be permitted to go ahead, I pushed on with training and found this gave me a real focus during the long lockdown when exercise was one of only a few permitted reasons for leaving the house; something I was hugely grateful for! “Leading up to, and on race day, there was brilliant support from the race organisers, both from my perspective with my epilepsy and the management of social distancing in a Covid19 world. All runners (around 37 people started the 60) were just so thankful the event went ahead. “I am happy to say that I completed the course in 16 hours and 33 minutes, having started at 6.30am and completing the last few hours in the dark. It was a good but very tough day and I am so grateful for my family and the ladies at my local running club 7 Hills Harriers for cheering me on in person or virtually. Their support kept me going through the dark times in the race!”
St Luke’s shops set to re-launch The re-launch of the St Luke’s Hospice chain of shops continues in October with the opening of two more of its most popular stores. The charity’s Chapeltown shop will welcome customers back on 12 October , while the Hillsborough shop will open its doors on 26 October . They join the other St Luke’s shops now in operation again at Crookes, Ecclesall Road, Crystal Peaks, Woodseats, City Road and Gleadless. “We thank all our supporters for their patience and are delighted that we are now able to add two more shops to the list of stores that are now fully operational again,” said St Luke’s Head of Retail Marie Egerton. “The response up to now has been great, both from bargain hunters and people wanting to make donations of all the things they have have been saving for us during lockdown. “Donations can be taken to our Donation Centre on Fieldhouse Way Industrial Estate, or any of our open shops between 12noon and 3pm on Mondays and Fridays. “We do point out that donations should not, under any circumstances, be left at any shop which is closed.” To find out which shops are now open and for details of the donation centre simply visit stlukeshospice.org.uk

Fox Valley’s first ‘Bag it for Bluebell’ day a huge success Bluebell Wood is sending out a huge thank you to generous Fox Valley shoppers after collecting a recordbreaking 473 bags of pre-loved items at its first ever Stockbridge ’Bag it for Bluebell’ day. The unprecedented haul was the most bags the charity has ever collected in a day at a business venue, all packed full of wonderful items that will now make their way to the charity’s shops and eBay site. Each bag collected is worth an average of £15 to the children’s hospice, so the bags collected at Fox Valley on 5 September equate to £7,095 in funding to help local children and families supported by Bluebell Wood make the most of every moment together. Terri Hanson, Head of Retail at Bluebell Wood, said: “We were blown away by the generosity of Fox Valley shoppers who’ve helped us surpass all expectations for our first ever Bag it for Bluebell Day at Fox Valley. “Each and every bag of pre-loved items people have kindly donated will help us make a real difference to local families whose time together is sadly just too short. “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated and to our charity partner Fox Valley for hosting us.” Bag it for Bluebell will be returning to Fox Valley on the first Saturday of each month to coincide with the popular Farmers’ Market. Bluebell Wood’s trusty collection van will be parked near Iceland and Home Bargains, and all necessary safety precautions will be in place to make sure people feel safe when donating their items. Claire Reynolds,Tenant Liaison Executive at Fox Valley, said: “We’re delighted that our first ever Bag it for Bluebell day was such a resounding success, all thanks to our amazing customers.” Everything you need to know about donating pre-loved items to Bluebell Wood can be found here www.bluebellwood.org/donate-goods

Percy Pud 10k cancelled This year’s race, which was to be held on 6 December, has fell victim to the Covid-19 pandemic. It is the first time the Percy Pud has had to be cancelled since 2010 when heavy snow brought a halt to proceedings, although it did eventually take place that year. “The Percy Pud 10k committee feel strongly that the health and safety of runners, volunteers, supporters, local residents and friends and families, should not be put at risk by holding such a large event at this time. The committee has delayed making this decision as long as possible in the hope that conditions would improve to allow the event to proceed, but there are still far too many uncertainties and risks to permit any other conclusion,” said Richard Dunk, race director.
Sky-House coming to Stocksbridge Peggy Tub site Plans for the redevelopment of Stocksbridge landmark The Peggy Tub have been approved by Sheffield Council. Following extensive discussions with the team at Coda Planning - experts in the development of residential projects throughout the country - city planners approved proposals for the redevelopment of the former social club in New Road, Stocksbridge. The once popular venue finally closed in 2015, the victim of changing times and drinking habits. Architects at award-winning Sheffield multi disciplinary practice CODA Studios have created the latest phase of the acclaimed Sky-House concept specifically for the site, which is close to the acclaimed Fox Valley retail development. Sky-House’s 21st century take on back-to-back housing creates sensitively dense, beautiful and naturally eco-friendly homes complete with their signature roof gardens, terraces and expansive windows. “We have been overwhelmed by the phenomenal response to Sky-House and delighted at the way the concept is now spreading throughout South Yorkshire,” said Sky-House Co co-founder David Cross. “We believe this is the best possible use for the site, bringing much needed new housing stock for this growing and increasingly popular north Sheffield community.” www.rmcmedia.co.uk 37

SHOP LOCAL
Support your independents THERE’S NEVER BEEN A BETTER TIME TO SHOP LOCAL. here are many little things we take for granted, like popping to the corner shop for a pint of milk, buying a hot roast pork sandwich from the butchers or enjoying a drink in your local coffee shop. Now these wonderful services, usually provided by family-run, independent businesses, need your help more than ever. The last few months have been difficult for all of us and these small shops and businesses are no exception. That cake, carpet or Christmas decoration that you buy locally makes a huge difference, not just to that business but to the community as a whole. The postcodes of S6 and S35 and beyond are blessed with some fantastic independent businesses, from high fashion to jewellery and home furnishings. With that in mind, and in praise of these wonderful enterprises, we’re encouraging everyone to shop local and support your independents. Here are some recommended businesses to get you started.

Diamonds are forever PA JEWELLERY EXPLAIN THE ENDURING APPEAL OF DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RINGS, AND WHY A SOLITAIRE WILL NEVER GO OUT OF FASHION. f you get engaged, you will probably choose a diamond ring to celebrate the occasion; it is regarded as the classic style and for most of us there is no alternative. This ‘tradition’ is only a recent invention however, and before the 20th century it would have been unusual to see an engagement ring featuring only diamonds. Rings have been given to mark a betrothal since at least the Middle Ages. The first record of a diamond engagement ring is in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy a gold band set with flat pieces of diamond that formed an ‘M’. Although this sparked a trend amongst the very wealthiest in Europe, diamonds were a rare and expensive gemstone, unavailable to most. By the 1800s engagement rings had become ornate pieces, combining coloured gemstones, small diamonds, enamel work and precious metals. A significant change occurred later in the century when the discovery of large diamond deposits in South Africa meant that diamonds were suddenly far more available than before: they were no longer the preserve of the very wealthy. Prices decreased as supply flowed into the market.
I
In the early decades of the 20th century economic circumstance stood in the way of this diamond revolution; two world wars and an economic crash meant people did not have money to spend on luxuries. In 1948 De Beers stepped in with their hugely successful advertising campaign that made a diamond ring seem indispensable when proposing. Their slogan, ‘A Diamond is Forever’, is still used today. The campaign allied diamond’s purity and durability to the idea that marriage is forever, promoted the idea that a diamond ring could be passed down through generations, and educated the public about the range of sizes and qualities available. It utilised the new concept of ‘celebrity’, with film stars photographed
dripping in diamonds. The campaign was probably one of the most successful of all time: it transformed the way the public thought about diamonds. Over the decades, fashions have changed, and trends have come and gone, influenced by celebrity engagements, changes in culture, and developments in cutting and setting. Changes in the way we shop mean there is now more choice available than ever before, and many couples like to have something a little different, with the addition of coloured gemstones, antique styling or an unusual setting. Throughout all this the round brilliant cut solitaire has maintained its popularity; its simplicity means it is perfect for everyday wear and never goes out of fashion, exemplifying the idea that a diamond is forever. What is MediSculpt Therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS. ediSculpt Therapy is a nonsurgical, very low calorie weight loss program which can combat obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents, and two body contouring treatments – LPG Endermologie and Vanquish MeTM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has both of these machines and the choice of which one to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully-trained therapists and last about 3040 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, they know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss.
M
During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t Before feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. G&M Healthcare also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. Once the phase 1 target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients are moved onto phase 2 where ‘normal foods’, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost. After the stabilisation phase there is a life-long maintenance programme where G&M Healthcare six weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter. The cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but
After
vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. Recent studies from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), published by G Thom et al in Glasgow in collaboration with the NHS in September this year and by Yiqoao Xin et al in May 2020, have shown that very low calorie diets can cause remission in people with early type 2 Diabetes Mellitus of less than six years since onset. The programme is now being rolled out on a bigger trial of 5,000 people in the UK. G&M Healthcare is offering a free informal consultation with their GP, so if you would like to learn more and have your weight and body fat composition checked, please call 0114 233 5000, text them on 07944 629727 or email g.m.healthcarereception@gmail.com www.rmcmedia.co.uk 43

CHILDREN’S PARTIES
Happy (and safe) birthday HOW WILL CHILDREN BE CELEBRATING THEIR BIRTHDAYS OVER THE COMING MONTHS? FROM NETFLIX PARTIES TO SCAVENGER HUNTS, WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK AT COVID-COMPLIANT OPTIONS.
057 Sixer Oct20 01/10/2020 12:56 Page 1
CHILDREN’S PARTIES
he last six months have been a challenging time for all of us, if you’re a parent, perhaps even more so. Homeschooling is something many of us thought we would never have to do but quickly became a way of life was we got to grips with Google Classroom, Numbots, Oak National Academy and PE With Joe. If you managed to make it through without a cross word, hat’s off to you, you deserve a medal. Now your children have returned to school all those months of hard work and endeavour to keep them educated and entertained is quickly forgotten. Talk of new teachers, new rules and what friends have been up to during lockdown has taken over. It’s about as ‘normal’ as we can get at this moment in time. This return to school and reconnection with friends also raises the question of birthday parties, particularly amongst younger children. It’ll not be long before invitations are flying out for those children who will be celebrating birthdays in the coming weeks and months. But something will have to change. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, a lot of the usual ‘go-to’ parties are no longer an option. Play centres have only just re-opened and are limiting numbers, swimming parties are a no-no and having the whole class round for tea is perhaps something that will have to wait until next year. So what’s left? Something outdoors is the first thing that springs to mind as this is the best way to minimise the chance of any infection but, depending on when your birthday is, you’re probably going to be weather dependent. If it does take a turn for the worse, there are plenty of virtual options which, let’s be honest, have become second nature to our younger ones. Here we look at some socially distant and Covid-compliant party options, inside and out.
T
Woodland magic A trip to the woods is great for children who love wildlife and it’s a wonderful way to get them active in the fresh air. Try activities including den building, scavenger hunts, nature watching and even an obstacle course.
Teddy bears picnic This can be held in your own back
garden or at a nearby park. Ask your friends to each bring a bear and gather in socially distant spaces for drinks, nibbles and maybe even a game of musical statues.
Woodland and Dino Dens amongst others. To find out more, visit justjimjams.wixsite.com.
Netflix and chill
Again, this could be held at home or any other outdoor space. Draw maps, create clues and let children have fun exploring their surroundings. You could even add a theme. Finish off with a mini picnic or event a piñata.
A Netflix party lets friends in different places watch movies or TV shows together online. Netflix Party synchronises video playback and adds group chat to your favourite Netflix shows. It’s free to use, you just need a Netflix account and the Google Chrome browser. See netflixparty.com to find out more.
Football fever
Karaoke King (and Queen)
One for the boys, outdoor football venues are now re-open and are a great way to let your children blow off some steam. Goals, who have venues throughout Yorkshire, have reinstated their birthday packages and include 90 minutes of coach-led football fun as well as some tasty food and drinks afterwards.Visit goalsfootball.co.uk to find out more.
There are no end of video conferencing and call apps and all can be put to good use when it comes to hosting a virtual karaoke party. Whether you’re using Skype, Google Hangout or House Party, everyone can join in, whether they choose to sing or not. What would your go-to karaoke song be?
Treasure hunt
Sleepover party You might want to invite a few friends over to take residence in your garden for the night. There are plenty of companies who can organise the whole thing for you, supplying tents, dens, air mattresses, fairy lights… you name it. South Yorkshire-based Just Jim Jams started last year and have quickly adapted so they can continue to host parties in the current climate. Be like Bond
Ultimate Bentayga Building on a long tradition of Speed models that was born with the Bentley Continental GT in 2007, the new Bentayga Speed is the ultimate plaything. It builds on the completely refreshed design of the new Bentayga, adopting the same Bentley design DNA now prevalent across the entire model range. Introducing the very latest onboard technology and an even more cosseting cabin, the new model is significantly revised both inside and out. Performance is impressive; utilising a 6.0-litre W12 twin-turbocharged engine, hand-built in Crewe, it delivers peak power of 635PS and 900Nm of torque. The result? A top speed of 190mph and a 0-62mph sprint time of 3.9 seconds.
Aston Martin is celebrating the release of the 25th James Bond film, with two exclusive 007 special editions inspired by the cars featured in No Time to Die. This new collaboration between Aston Martin and EON Productions, the company that produces the James Bond films with Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios, delivers exciting new 007 editions of the Aston Martin Vantage and DBS Superleggera. No Time To Die will be released around the world in November 2020 and will feature no fewer than four iconic Aston Martin sports cars: the iconic DB5; the classic Aston Martin V8; the brand’s latest super GT, DBS Superleggera; and the exceptional Aston Martin Valhalla – the company’s forthcoming mid-engined hypercar. The two special editions are being offered in limited numbers and have been carefully designed and crafted by the experts in Aston Martin’s bespoke division: Q by Aston Martin.
