Middlewood Road is one of the main routes through Hillsborough and his home to a wealth of independent businesses as well as bars, restaurants, cafes and, of course, Hillsborough Park. This green space dominates the area and is home to a libary, bowling and croquet clubs and a sports arena.

Elsewhere we spoke to the team behind S1 Artspace, who will be our young chefs who have been going head-to-head in a special competition.

There’s also your usual mix of fashion, food, homes, motoring, and more memorable pictures to cast your eye over.

See you next month.

We offer a curated selection of exotic plants, palms, and unique homeware, perfect for bringing nature and style into your home - all at unbeatable prices. Our store is open 7 days a week in Hillsborough, Sheffield, with online ordering also available for your convenience.

There are two large free car parks just a minute's walk away: The B&M car park on Middlewood Road and directly opposite Halfords Auto Centre on Bradfield Road.

Taste of theEXOTIC

illsborough is now home to its very own tropical paradise following the opening of Yorkshire Exotics Plants & Home on Holme Lane. The new shop offers a taste of the exotic, stocking all manner of indoor plants as well as accessories for the home.

Yorkshire Exotics is the brainchild of Sam and Josh who have always had a passion for plants, borne out of a love for gardening. They have been selling exotic plants via Facebook for over three years but wanted to put down roots and chose Hillsborough because of its bustling nature and community spirit.

“We only opened early September but already we’ve been overwhelmed by the amount of people that have been in and wished us luck,” said Sam. “It’s nice to be part of that community and bring something new to the area.”

The shop, which is close to Hillsborough Corner, is a welcoming space, you certainly get that ‘zen feeling’ when you step inside. It stocks plants that are a little bit different to what you get in a garden centre or

supermarket. There’s alocasias, maranta, and succulents, ferns and Sam’s personal favourite, calatheas.

“They come in all shapes and sizes and different varieties and can add character to any home,” added Sam. “Our stock is everchanging so make sure you keep calling in to see the different kinds.”

Yorkshire Exotics also has an extensive range of variegated plants – those that have leaves with more than one colour, for example, monsteras. Prices start from as little as £2.

“Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or just starting your green journey, we have something special for everyone,” said Sam. “From lush houseplants to unique succulents, our carefully curated selection will help you bring the beauty of nature into your home.”

To complement the many varieties of plants the shops sells a range of ceramic pots and ornaments as well as terrariums, which come in either geometric or molten glass designs. There are also different

kinds of feeds to keep your plants in tiptop shape although most of them are low maintenance. Sam and Josh readily offer advice to ensure you don’t overwater and give them the right amount of sunlight.

In addition, you can buy vegan soaps, candles and room sprays, which are all

diffusers and salt lamps.

“Plants can be very calming but buying

perfect plant to brighten your space.”

Yorkshire Exotics is open Monday to Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday 10am-4pm.

Safe, stylish and durable

F TRANSFORM YOUR OUTDOOR SURFACES WITH ROMAN ROAD SYSTEMS’ RESIN BOUND FINISHES.

irst impressions are everything, especially when it comes to your home. And this extends beyond your front door to your paths, patios and driveways. If they’re cracked, broken or full of weeds, it’s time to do something about it.

This is where Roman Road Systems Ltd come in. The family-run business with over 25 years’ experience can breathe new life into tired pathways, drives and patios.

They are expert installers of resin bound decorative surfaces which can transform hard-standing areas by creating a safe, durable and attractive surface in many different finishes and colours.

Resin bound surfaces, which can add colour and character to your outdoor spaces, are created by mixing aggregate material with a suitable resin compound which is then laid on the prepared surface min 16mm in depth to provide a smooth and aesthetically-pleasing surface.

They are most suitable for non-slip areas as the finish is not abrasive. Resin bound systems minimise puddles, ice and growth of mould and weeds and are easy to maintain; they simply need a jet wash or hose down, then swept clean.

Managing director Rob Barnett established the Eckington-based company over 15 years ago after having previously worked in the bridge and road construction industries, which included the installation of anti-skid surfaces. Rob works with his daughter Shani,

who is office manager, as well as Ryan Walsh who is site manager. And don’t forget to look out for the friendly works dog – Roman the German Shepherd.

“Our team have good knowledge in the fields they’re working in and, more than anything else, they have great pride and a sense of achievement in what they are doing,” Rob said. “Along with this, we only use the very best materials and products on all our jobs. This may sometimes make us not the cheapest around, but we certainly guarantee all our work will last with no worries.

“We are very proud of delivering above and beyond our customers’ expectations at a price that is absolute value for money.”

The team can help with design and build from scratch, including ramps and steps. Over the years, Roman Road Systems have also broadened their offering and can now provide full landscaping services, including fencing, gates, turf and artificial grass, as well as flat roofs, fascias, rendering, and other general building maintenance.

If you fancy something completely different, logos can be incorporated into any design. You can see examples of the different styles and colours available at their Eckington show site.

Roman Road Systems’ surfaces are long-lasting, don’t fade or discolour with time. All work is fully insured and comes with a full ten-year guarantee.

Finance is available on all installations and Roman Road Systems currently have an spring offer where they are offering 50 per cent off resin borders.

Please make an appointment to visit the outdoor display area at the depot, which is highly recommended.

Changing of theGUARD

Rosie Brennan samples the new menu at The Garrison Hotel.

he Garrison Hotel, located within Hillsborough Barracks, is known for its historical aesthetic and affordable prices, and with a well-earned average four-star rating on Tripadvisor, is perfect for a mid-week treat.

TArriving at golden hour, the hotel entrance gave off a warm, inviting glow, with the historical atmosphere providing a unique shift from the bustling shops and nearby barracks.

As I expected on a Monday evening, the interior was very calm and relaxed, with the exposed brick walls and unpretentious decoration embodying a snug and homely British pub. Greeted by very friendly waiting staff, we were shown to our table.

Most of the starters are around six to ten pounds, as I opted for the feta salad

main - The Garrison Burger (£14.50). My friend chose the classic bruschetta (£7.50).

The starter arrived in quick time, with the combination of olives, feta, peppers, cucumber and tomatoes brightening up my plate. Though it is a simple starter,

there was no room for error and the zingy, delectable dish made for a great start to a lovely meal. The bruschetta was also refreshing and light, with the differentlycoloured tomatoes and hint of garlic oil complementing their traditional toasted sourdough.

After a short wait, we were onto the main. The Garrison burger, I felt, would tell me everything I’d ever need know about the restaurant. A dish as simple as a burger opens them up to creativity, giving their a proper burger, a mouth-watering, bite-

disappointed. The interesting combination of chorizo with horseradish mustard, alongside a classic beef burger, proved to

of what I’d come to expect from a cosy, classically-British feeling restaurant.

Choosing a lighter main, my friend had the pasta ragu (£11), containing slowcooked beef brisket, carrots, chives, celery and cherry tomatoes. We’re no strangers to a simple penne pasta dish, but The

Garrison’s version was certainly leaps and bounds above what could be whipped up at home, both in quality and taste. The slow-cooked beef made for an excellent

the meal.

Once we’d indulged in every last bite of The Garrison, as much as we’d hoped to explore their wonderful dessert menu,

by our delightfully proper mains to even debate spoiling ourselves to their selection of sweet treats.

The Garrison is a “you know where you are” kind of place. Serving completely unpretentious classics that cannot be faulted with a wonderful level of service, I’ll be sure to pay another visit when in the mood for some proper food in a cosy, comfortable and welcoming establishment.

Show your SUPPORT

It may be a way off but it’s never too early to prepare your children for exams.

As a parent it may not feel like there’s much you can do when it comes to SATs, GCSEs or A-levels but in reality, there are many things you can be doing to support your child during this stress inducing time.

Promote Routine

It is important during exam season that exams do not take over every aspect of a child’s life and creating a healthy routine is a good way to prevent this. Helping your child create a sustainable revision timetable that includes breaks is a good way to start. However, parents can also help by setting routines regarding mealtimes, sleep, relaxing and socialising. By doing this students can focus on their revision without burning out and becoming all consumed by exams.

Phones away

This may not be necessary for older stu-

dents, but younger children may need some help learning when and when not to be on their screens.

Encouraging your child to have phone free time whilst revising will massively improve their productivity and even mean they won’t have to revise for as long. So, remind them of this and help them avoid using their phones when in revision mode.

Plan activities to do together

Another way to support your child during exams is to plan fun activities to do whether with you or their friends. During exams it is super important for students’ wellbeing that they take time to relax!

This could take the form of a walk through the park or a shopping trip with their friends. Especially if the activity involves getting some fresh air this will be health.

Help with revision

It may sound simple but one crucial way to show your support for your child during exam season is to help them with their revision.

Revising for exams can be monotonous and lonely so a great way to liven it up is by getting involved yourself. You could them mark practice papers. Whatever you can do to help will be appreciated and make the experience less daunting for them.

Celebrate the end of exams

exams on the calendar and organise a way to celebrate their hardwork. This could be a family meal out, a trip to the cinema or a movie night. By doing this you are not only rewarding your child’s work but creating a useful motivator for them during their exams.

A Celebrating the ARTS

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate was recently awarded a Gold Artsmark.

ward-winning independent school, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), are celebrating after receiving a prestigious Gold Award from Artsmark, who are accredited by Arts Council England. Artsmark offer the only creative quality standard for schools and to achieve the award, QE had to develop their arts and cultural provision to embed a broad and ambitious curriculum.

On receiving the award, Helen Stephenson, Head of Creative Arts at QE said: “We’re extremely proud of achieving our Gold Artsmark Award. We are committed to delivering a high-quality arts and cultural education and are looking forward to growing our provision alongside Artsmark.”

Dr Darren Henley OBE, Chief Executive of the Arts Council, said: “I would like to

congratulate Queen Ethelburga’s on their Artsmark Award. Becoming an Artsmark school demonstrates that through offering a broad, ambitious and creative curriculum, young people have the opportunity to develop character and resilience, increasing their knowledge, curiosity and skills that will remain with them through to adult life.”

The school offers an ambitious provision of over 30 courses across art and design, music, drama and dance with numerous opportunities throughout the year to perform and compete in individual and team disciplines. With an impressive 39 per cent of their students choosing to pursue Creative Arts subjects for GCSE, BTEC, or A Level in 2023-24, it is perhaps no surprise that QE regularly achieves recognition in national competitions.

In 2023 alone, students achieved a win,

runner up, and a highly commended in the ISA Arts Young Musician Competition, two Competition, a win in the ISA Shakespeare the ISA Musical Theatre Competition, and a win in the ISA Band Competition. And in creative arts, QE students enjoyed wins in the ISA National Art competition for KS5 3D Design (2023), KS4 Sketchbook (2023), and KS5 Photography (2022 and 2023) as well as regional success in 2023 with ISA Northern Arts wins for KS5 2D Art, KS4 3D Design, KS4 Photography, and KS5 Textiles.

The Kip McGrath DIFFERENCE

Get your child ahead this school year with expert tutoring.

t can often feel that our children are being constantly assessed. From the minute they start school to the moment they leave they are forever under the spotlight which can bring added pressure for not just the children but parents too.

Some children take all this in their stride, breeze through their SATs and GCSEs, but some need extra help. This is where Kip McGrath can help.

Founded in 1976 in Australia, Kip McGrath is one of the world’s biggest professional tutoring providers and has almost 250 centres in the UK. Their education centres aim to complement the work being done in schools so that students

differently and, using proven methodology, can help them reach their full potential. All and uphold Kip McGrath’s standards.

All potential students are given a free assessment, which is used to ensure they are then placed at the correct level on the Kip McGrath programme to learn all the necessary skills. Every concept is taught systematically, and the student works through each topic area until they have caught up to their year level. This approach is thorough, structured and successful.

The Kip McGrath maths programme covers all curriculum topics that students are expected to learn in school. The programme is designed to teach children basic mathematical concepts which will help them understand and learn new concepts so they can catch up at school. The programme also contains extension modules for when students are ready for

more challenging work, and more complex and advanced activities for senior students who want to improve their skills.

The English programme caters for students who are struggling to read through to students aiming for the highest GCSE grades. The curriculum covers all aspects of English that students are expected to learn throughout their years at school (where

Do you REMEMBER?

he was a distinct football theme to last month’s Do You Remember? and well done if you managed to spot anyone you know in the two fantastic pictures.

The main image was supplied by Barry Couldwell. Sharp-eyed football fans of a certain vintage may have recognised a familiar face in last month’s team shot of Thomas Marshals FC, from the 1950s. They are (back row, L-R): B. Wragg, W.Harper, G. Barnaby, D. Haigh, G. Elliot, B. Turner. Front row (L-R): K. Hopkinson, N Suirtcliffe, Cedric Couldwell, K. Jones, D. Ensall. Many thanks to Barry for sending us the picture.

The second, smaller picture, was sent in by Frank Elliott of Loxley and was of Loxley Boys football team. We don’t have an exact year but Frank reckons it can be dated to the late 1950s/early 1960s.

Seeing as we’re ‘back to school’, our pictures this month feature some classic education-themed pictures. See anyone you know?
