IT WAS COLD, TOUGH AND TOOK LONGER THAN EXPECTED BUT CROSS-CHANNEL SWIMMER RICHARD DAVIS IS ALL SMILES AFTER FULFILLING A CHILDHOOD DREAM. hen Richard Davis is not throwing himself down the steep mountains of the Alps or submerging himself in the cold waters of Rotherham Sailing Club, he’s braving an arduous swim across the English Channel. Richard grew up with a love of swimming and making the lengthy journey across the Channel was one of his life ambitions. During his teenage years gradually his interest in the water faded, and the dream was pushed to the back of his mind. However, a few years ago his love for the sport was rekindled, he joined Yorkshire Outdoor Swimmers and took on the Great North Swim at Windermere in the Lake District. This event has been around for ten years, providing thousands of swimmers with exhilarating and challenging open water events, where they can swim anything from ten kilometres to 250 miles. “After the Great North, a friend had

The Vicarage Freehouse & Rooms is nestled in the picturesque Cheshire countryside, near the River Dane. With its rustic exterior and climbing ivy, it blends perfectly into its surroundings, creating the perfect British getaway. The hotel is run by Flat Cap Hotels and inside it’s spacious and well thought out with three comfortable lounges, contemporary outdoor dining area, games room as well as light and airy conservatory area and country house style restaurant. We didn’t want our stay to end. The hotel has six exquisite signatures rooms, each with its own quirky touch such as a large chess board, which as competitive people, we took full advantage of. With its shabby-chic décor, including checked cushions, a deep blue chest, vintage gold mirror and finished with a delicately painted ‘do not disturb’ sign hung on the door, the room lived up to expectations as luxurious retreat from home.

The bedrooms are well-designed with luxury bathrooms to match – ours came with a huge bath and a rainmaker shower, the perfect place to unwind and put on your glad rags before experiencing The Vicarage’s restaurant. They source their produce locally with a menu driven by the gardener’s foragers, farmers and suppliers of Cheshire, and we were blown away. Stand-out dishes included pan-seared prawns in chilli butter, Cornish crab with a chilli and lime jam, Vicarage burger and chocolate and strawberry brulée with pastry tuille. Service throughout was immaculate. The dining area was bustling all evening, and I immediately fell for the rustic décor. From a wall of antique mirrors, to fabric animals busts, riding hats, plush velvet seats and family crests hung on the wooden beams, I felt like I was Elizabeth Bennett enjoying a weekend away with Mr Darcy. After a restful night’s sleep in the comfiest of beds, a hearty breakfast in the conservatory was just what we needed before taking a tenminute drive to Knutsford to wander around the many independent shops, enjoying the cobbled streets and brightly painted facades, before lunch at another of the family-run group’s hotels – The Courthouse. The former Crown Court has been converted into the Barristers Restaurant and @SixerRMC
Rooftop Gardens, and the refurbishment emulates the building’s history and grandeurstyle. Sitting where the judge used to reside, looking down on the defendant – now the fully-stocked bar framed with towering plants – was a fun experience whilst we enjoyed a luxurious lunch. Stand-out dishes included Atlantic prawn and avocado sandwich, chocolate tart with caramel gel and Tatin with pineapple and caramelised puff pastry. Service was outstanding and we were treated to a tour of the grand building. The lush surroundings of The Vicarage make for the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a peaceful and memorable weekend away, whilst enjoying the close-by historic town of Knutsford with its iconic Gaskell Tower.

Join the Crewe HISTORIC NORTHUMBERLAND HAS PLENTY TO OFFER, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR – PERFECT FOR A SHORT STOPOVER. at next to a huge fireplace, surrounded by stone walls and a wooden beamed ceiling, sipping ale from tankards, this could easily be an iconic scene from Game of Thrones. But we were not at Castle Black on the icy northern border of a fictional land, we were at Lord Crewe Arms, on the border of Northumberland. Built in 1165, this hotel was originally part of Blanchland Abbey, home to the White Canons of the Roman Catholic Order. These monks famously dressed in white and as blanche is French for white, the village became known as Blanchland. This building was originally the Abbot’s lodge, guest house, kitchens and dining room, and the gardens served as cloisters for the monks of the Northumbrian moors. The abbey was dissolved in 1539 and was bought by the Radcliffes, then the Forster family, before being taken over by Lord Nathaniel Crewe in 1708. And if you like a good ghost story, they say Dorothy Forster still walks the abbey to this day. Back in the land of the living, hotel guests and visitors alike can enjoy the Lord Crewe Arms’ Crypt Bar, the cosy adjoining Derwent room, or sit next to the afore mentioned grand fireplace – just the thing in these colder months.

Upstairs is the more formal Bishops dining room, but you can eat in the casual surroundings of the lower fireplace room if you wish. The evening we arrived, my partner enjoyed an Isle of Wight salad with Langley Farm cottage cheese to start and a juicy flat iron steak for his main, while I had chilled, white gazpacho, followed by tender roast suckling pig porchetta with whipped polenta and spinach. Back in our room, I relished the chance to dip into the deep bathtub and cosy up to the wood burner with a cup of tea, before settling into a sumptuous double bed. The next morning we gazed out of the dining room window at the gorgeous gardens, whilst eating breakfast. I had eggs royale with salmon that had been smoked and cured on the premises. The hotel is also proud to grow its own vegetables and has a biomass shed to generate its own energy. And it’s not just a great place for a leisurely stay. There are also brilliant facilities in the adjoining Gatehouse for business conferences, containing a meeting room, sitting room and kitchen. Once we had checked out, the receptionist suggested several walks, but the bottom line was, “Whichever direction you walk in, you’ll
get to the North Pennines!” With Derwent Reservoir just a couple of country miles up the road, the Crewe is wellplaced for sailing and water sports, as well as cycling, fishing and shooting. It’s also a great base for day trips to the Beamish Museum and Hadrian’s Wall, or even for a shopping trip to Newcastle. On our walk, we came across a chicken crossing the road – a sign we were truly in the country, and the ruins of the old Shildon Engine House – a symbol of the area’s industrial past. Back in the village, we perused the traditional sweets and the homemade cards and gifts at a local shop, before going to the Monk Tearoom, an old school room-turnedcafé, for a pot of tea before returning home. So if you want to feel like the king of the castle, venture over the North Pennines or explore the nearby museums, Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland is a cosy and comfortable home from home.

ADULTS WITH LEARNING DIFFICULTIES ARE BEING GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES WITH UNDER THE STARS. RACHEL MARTIN LOOKS AT HOW THEIR WORKSHOPS ARE MAKING A HUGE DIFFERENCE. nder the Stars, a not-for-profit arts organisation based in Hillsborough, was set up in 2007 because adults with learning difficulties weren’t being offered a place where they could socialise as adults. “They were being offered pop to drink and songs like Agadoo to dance to,” says music tutor, Liz Nicholas. “So the founders decided to set up a place where adults with learning difficulties could go along with their friends and support workers and listen to music they enjoy, have a proper drink and let their hair down. “They wanted to create a safe environment where there wasn’t going to be any flashing lights and where people weren’t going to be singled out because they look or behave differently.” Now in its tenth year, the team have been busy raising awareness and spreading the word about the wonderful work they do. But nightclubs aren’t the only scheme they offer. “The nightclubs were swiftly followed by DJ workshops, because of a growing number of requests by attendees. The organisation then went on to set up weekly music workshops later in 2010, which run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. “That’s when I started tutoring and where some of our bands, Clubland Detectives, Without Heads and The Stars Band were formed. “I currently tutor the rock workshops and the Clubland Detectives, whose music varies from quite dark and epic songs like Darkest Night or Bittersweet Emotion to more uplifting pieces like Here to Have a Good Time and Wild & Free.

“We have one woman in the band, Katie, and because we were getting such a big male to female ratio – we were getting ten men to every woman turning up to the rock workshops – we decided to set up a female only group on a Thursday. The group started meeting at the beginning of 2013 and they are now known as The Sparkle Sistaz. “We also run weekly drama workshops, as well as nightclubs most months – there are a couple in Doncaster, but most take place at The Leadmill, and they are still very much a big part of what Under the Stars do.” Under the Stars tutors come from a range of backgrounds and between them cover almost every genre of music. “We’re all people who will give anything a go. Certainly, as far as I’m concerned, I am not an expert on any piece of band equipment, but I’ll try my hand at playing just about anything. “Our approach is to teach people enough skills to start making music, so that they can go on to develop their own roles, write their own songs and enjoy playing together. We do a lot of work on rhythm and pulse, as well as listening to each other and taking turns, in order for members to get a feeling, as soon as possible, for being a tight band. “Whether you’re playing the tambourine or a guitar solo, you feel part of it all, and rather than us asserting a very specific arrangement of a song, we try to let people develop their own parts. “As tutors, our role is to pick out an idea that could turn into a song, take a photo or video, and then work on it with the group. We don’t like people to pigeon hole themselves, we like everyone to feel free and
have a go whatever they want.” The bands’ achievements range from small daily accomplishments like learning a new instrument and improving speech patterns, to performing at Tramlines and taking to the pitch at Bramall Lane, where the Sparkle Sistaz debuted their song about the Blades, At The Lane. “Most band members play more than one instrument and it’s very much a collective effort, although when the Dubland Collective, a small off-shoot of the band, wrote their tracks to perform at The Leadmill in June, they wrote them totally independently,” says tutor Rob Dickinson. “They came up with all the music and the lyrics, without any help from us, and they did a fantastic job.” For the tutors, the workshops aren’t just a pastime, it’s a secure space where band members can enjoy expressing themselves and learn new skills – something that isn’t always readily available. “For a start, I think learning new skills is really important to everyone’s mental health and once you turn 18, whether you have additional needs or not, the number of places you can go to learn, and have fun learning, is limited,” says Liz. “There are a lot of people out there who discover they can make music late in life and you need to make spaces available where people can go to be creative and enjoy expressing themselves. “That’s exactly what we do at Under the Stars, and if you’re interested in joining any of our groups, call the office on 0114 2331 869 and we can talk through your situation and what days you’re free.”

So take the stress out of cooking this year by booking a table on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. And when you book a table of ten before 31 October, you will also get a free bottle of house wine. Now is also the time to book your Christmas party between 27 November and 23 December or drop in on Tuesday evenings from 28 November to 19 December for carols. The Crown & Glove has a range of real ales and craft beers for all beer drinkers, plus wines and spirits for those who are not. For those who are new to the pub, The Rose and Crown are situated on the leafy edges of the Wadsley Common and at this time of year, with all of the leaves falling, it’s a very beautiful sight. The pub itself has an abundance of olde world charm, along with log burners and a lovely team of staff, to offer a hospitable and warm welcome. With a strong focus on home-cooked food made with ingredients from local suppliers, the pub has just launched its Christmas menu, which has three delicious courses with all the trimmings for £19.99 or you can choose two courses for £14.99. And finishing off the year, there will be a New Year’s Eve Dinner & Disco to celebrate into 2018 from 7pm for £65 per person. WITH LOTS COMING UP, IT’S TIME TO TRY IT FOR YOURSELF. he Crown & Glove’s vision is to provide a quality local pub, known for always serving a great pint and delicious, locally-sourced, freshly-prepared pub grub. In Stannington, the pub is perfectly positioned between the city to the east and the Peak District to the west. It attracts a variety of customers including locals, walkers and out-of-towners. It provides a warm welcome, great real ales and well-cooked food, as well as the usual pub attractions. The Crown & Glove has a range of real ales and craft beers for all beer drinkers, plus wines and spirits for those who are not. The pub includes seasonal and on trend brands, but always has a core of classic favourites. The pub shows terrestrial sporting broadcasts, has a dartboard and a pub quiz with cash and voucher prizes every Wednesday evening from 9.30pm. There is a regular menu of pub classics,

sandwiches and desserts, as well as daily specials on the blackboard, pie night on Mondays and steak night on Thursday evenings. It is open every day from 12pm to 11pm and serves food from 12pm to 9pm, except Sundays (12pm to 5pm). Booking is recommended. Although it is now an established business, The Crown & Glove is always looking for new ways to develop, innovate, drive business and contribute to local society, such as implementing a hot smoker and growing its own salad and vegetables. In the coming months, they plan to celebrate National Cask Ale Week (25 September to 1 October), bonfire night and Christmas.

This is the rather thorny question the forthcoming exhibition at Cupola Gallery is positing in its exhibition, Original 200. Every artwork in this exhibition has a price tag of £200 and each piece is an original. “We hope that by exhibiting works across media, that we might encourage discussion and debate around these issues,” said director, Karen Sherwood. Mad Man with the Pram presented with cheque for charity Most Sheffielders are familiar with the fundraising John ‘mad man with the pram’ Burkhill does for Macmillan Cancer Support, but when Rangers FC came to play Sheffield Wednesday a few weeks ago, Rangers fans allegedly harassed John because he was wearing green – the colour of their rivals, Celtic. Since then, Rangers fans and Sheffield residents have rallied to raise money for Macmillan. Local author, Barry Couldwell has raised £400.20 from the sale of his latest book and presented the cheque to John at The Star offices in Sheffield. “It was awful that Rangers fans picked on him, but it was only a minority,” said Barry. “He has been up to Glasgow where they gave him a tremendous reception and a cheque, which will go towards John reaching £1million. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a Flying Satsuma! Last month, Tony Shirtcliffe of Malin Motor Bodies took part in the Silverstone Classic 2017, one of the world’s greatest historic race festivals, with his bright orange 1957 Austin A35 Academy car nicknamed the Flying Satsuma. Bradfield Brewery were proud to sponsor Tony and were there to support him on the weekend, along with the Malin Motors team. This year’s event was in aid of Prostate Cancer UK and Tony is proud to announce that altogether they have raised nearly £25,000 for the charity. Every driver was paired up with a celebrity driver and their points were combined to determine an overall winner. Tony was paired with former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and touring car racer, Wayne Gardner. Competing against 27 other cars, Wayne finished in fourth place on the Saturday, while Tony came in an equally admirable fifth place on the Sunday. The celebrity drivers were also grouped into teams and Wayne’s Bike Legends won the overall team award.
