‘I’ll never forget our last Christmas at Ashgate Hospice with Dad’
hristmas was Dad’s favourite time of year, and Ashgate Hospice made sure we were able to celebrate together, as a family, one last time.”
Those are the words of Faye, whose kindhearted dad Philip received end of life care at Ashgate Hospice’s Inpatient Unit before his death on 28 December 2023, aged 66.
The grandfather, who had cancer and weeks of his life at Ashgate after being admitted on 2 November.
Spending Christmas with the people close to him was so important to Philip, and – because of Ashgate’s care – his family were able to make special festive memories
“From walking into the hospice and seeing the Christmas trees, it was just magical in Ashgate during the festive season,” said Faye.
“I’ll never forget on Christmas Day, we decided to take Christmas to the hospice. We had a pyjama party,
made prawn cocktails!
“They’re such happy memories for our family; I’m just so grateful the hospice was there so we could focus on spending time with Dad.”
As Faye and her family get ready to
dad, they’re urging people to back the hospice’s Christmas Appeal.
The campaign will help raise the £11 million Ashgate needs each year – over and above NHS funding – in order to pay for end of life vital care.

Rediscovering a JOY FOR LIFE
Susan has a renewed enthusiasm thanks to the St Luke’s team.
usan Walker admits that her 2019 diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease destroyed her life as she had known it.
But with the support of the St Luke’s Hospice team she has rediscovered a joy for life she thought she had lost.
“The diagnosis came in December of that year and I will never forget it,” Susan recalls.
“I worked in the NHS as a GP receptionist, so perhaps I had too much knowledge about it but it meant things like losing my driving license and then I lost all my independence.
“Now I can’t even hug my two beautiful granddaughters and that’s hard – it destroyed my life.
“As I lie here in bed at home I can’t even lift my arm to wipe my eyes or nose, I can’t do something as simple as have a drink on my own and I have to be dressed and fed –but I still eat and enjoy my food!”
Most of the caring for Susan is carried out by husband Gerry in the couple’s home
But she also has regular visits to the St Luke’s Patient and Family Support Service, where she receives extra care from Complementary Therapist Joanne Harthill.
“The hospital referred me to St Luke’s because I was getting down because I do like to speak to different people and do different things,” Susan explains.
Luke’s and I hit it off with her straight away but the whole team are great too.”
During her visits, Susan has received help with essential exercise – important to her when movement is now so limited – and had support with areas such as pain management.
“Things like hand massage are really important to me because my hands are really swollen and sore but it’s not just the massage – they’ll also paint my nails for me,” she says.
“The relaxation techniques I have been taught have been a really big help to me too.
“What’s important too is that for maybe half an hour we just chat about what’s happening in life and the world and it’s so lovely to be with people who are so friendly.
“It’s like meeting up with your best friends and I really can’t thank them enough for what they do – it’s the kindness that means so much and I wasn’t expecting that.
thought: ‘Oh dear, they will want to talk to me about death and dying’ but it’s not like that at all.
“I look forward to it every time and when I get home I feel refreshed and one of the big things is that if I want to ask them anything I know they are there for me.
“I hold the greatest regard for St Luke’s and I would say to anybody in my position that if you get the offer to go you should take it.
“They are lovely kind people who will talk on your level about anything you want and will make you feel a much better person by the time you come out.
patients like Susan, both in their own homes and at the St Luke’s In Patient Centre - and there are many ways that you can help that work to continue.
Supporters can make a regular donation, leave a gift to the hospice in their Will, take part in the popular St Luke’s Lottery or support one of the many St Luke’s fundraising events throughout the year.
The next major event is the always popular St Luke’s Festival of Light, which will be held in the hospice’s Little Common Lane gardens on Sunday 1 December, hosted by BBC Look North presenter and keen St Luke’s supporter Tom Ingall.

The Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards, sponsored by The Owlerton Experience, returned to the OEC for the fourth time - and what a night it was.
or many of our restaurants attending the 2024 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, sponsored by The Owlerton Experience, it was a night of multiples with many walking off with more than one award.
Grabbing the headlines were the Peacock at Rowsley, who won Best Contemporary and the coveted Restaurant of the Year awards, and Nonnas, who as well as winning Best Italian were given a special achievement award for their longevity in the notoriously challenging hospitality business.
Longbow Venues, who own The Maynard in Grindleford, The Ashford Arms and The George in Hathersage won three awards for Readers’ Choice, Best Sunday Lunch and Young Chef of the Year. The Readers’ Choice Award is one of the most popular and is voted for by yourselves.

The kitchen served a wonderful fourcourse meal which consisted of a roasted spiced butternut squash and sweet potato
cod with a pea risotto cake and a saffron white wine sauce. For main course we tucked into braised beef brisket with a mini beef shin cottage pie and for dessert polished off salted caramel chocolate tart, white
chocolate ice cream and honeycomb crumb.
When it came to the 2024 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards competition was keen of course, and we were delighted at how many local restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the event. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region and beyond.
Each of our 26 winners received an engraved plaque, which were presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp and publishing director Amanda Roy.

Sweet festiveFINISH
Don’t overlook dessert this Christmas. We turned to three local restaurants for inspiration.
essert is a dish often overlooked when it comes to Christmas dinner, with the roast bird (obviously) and all the trimmings taking centre stage.
DA traditional pudding is often the go-to choice – usually smothered in brandy butter or cream – but can be incredibly heavy
So what of the alternatives?
We have spoken to a number of our local restaurants – all winners in our recent Westside Restaurant Awards (see page 28 for a full list of winners) – and asked for some inspiration when it comes to serving something up to follow the main event.
Adrian Gagea, who is executive chef at The Maynard, Grindleford, recommends a steamed ginger pudding with Baileys and caramel sauce and coconut ice cream.
“This is simple and easy to make no matter if is in a small batch or for a few friends and family, perfect for a special occasion and to impress all your guests,” he said.
Adrian chose this dish as he said food at Christmas is all about indulging and this delicious dessert is the perfect way to end a fabulous festive meal. It has rich,

The chef recommends a bottle of Feline I Monili Primitivo or Mi Lugar Rioja Vino de Quel to go with the dish.
“Or for a very special occasion you can go with a great bottle of Barbaresco Roncaglie Poderi Colla,” he said.
Sami Bouaziz, kitchen manager at Brocco on the Park, chose a classic chocolate fondant presented simply in a deep bowl with icing sugar, raspberry, and a viola leaf.
“We chose this dish because on a day like Christmas Day, where you already have enough to worry about, take the stress away with a straightforward dessert that is sure to
“Much of the prep can be done the day before, and then heated in the oven before serving. We would recommend a Sauternes Chateau Briatte to enjoy with this dessert. A sweet white wine with orange notes in the nose.”
