SS Antiques

Unearth a gem From classic jewellery to retro toys, there were some stunning sales at the recent auctions held by Hansons Auctioneers. Dazzling displays

Star buys

Hansons Auctioneers entered spring on a spectacular note with its first jewellery event of the year. The fine art jewellery auction featured a wide range of exquisite antique and modern pieces and celebrated exceptional quality and craftsmanship. Leading the sale was a stunning five-stone diamond ring (estimated £4,000-£6,000). Another glistening highlight included a Victorian diamond star brooch (estimated £2,000£3,000), which could also be used as a pendant. The auction also offered a large selection of precious gemstone jewellery including an aquamarine and seed pearl pendant/brooch, circa 1900 (estimated £300-£500). The aquamarine stone weighed an impressive 11.50ct. Although diamonds are a classic purchase, the interest in coloured gemstones has skyrocketed. In a recent antique and collector’s auction, three red amber bead necklaces sold for a staggering £1,900. The imperial jade market has also flourished; at Hansons’ December antique and collector’s auction a stunning Chinese gold and imperial jade late 20th century necklace sold for £3,300. Another precious item to be uncovered on a recent valuation day was a striking opal brooch (estimated £800-£1,200) from the Edwardian period, which is decorated with diamonds, sapphires, rubies and garnets. To see similar items, why not check out the spring jewellery event on Thursday 31 March at 6.30pm? Drinks and canapes will be served from 4.30pm and a well-established and highly regarded team of jewellery valuers will be on hand to offer advice on buying or selling at auction. For further enquiries, contact the saleroom on 01283 733988 or email jewellery@hansonsauctioneers.co.uk.

The Force must be strong with Hansons Auctioneers as their first specialist Star Wars auction was a great success. A collection of Star Wars figures comprising Luke, Leia, Han Solo and Chewbacca sold for an unexpected £300, soaring past the original estimate of £100-£200. Another collection of figures to exceed expectations featured models of stormtroopers, Darth Vader and The Emperor and sold for £210, against the guide price of £80-£120. Other highlights included a boxed Star Wars Imperial Shuttle, selling for £200, and a Star Wars Millennium Falcon, which achieved £160. As well as attracting national and international interest from Star Wars collectors from as far as the USA, Hansons saleroom staff were delighted to meet Willie Coppen, a Star Wars collector who played the part of an Ewok in Return of the Jedi. He said: “The studios in which the scenes were filmed were incredibility hot. I once overheated and had to be cooled down by Harrison Ford!” Following the success of the Star Wars auction, Hansons is inviting entries for the toy auction on Tuesday 24 May. Entries close on 27 April, so why not take a look in your attic for any old toys that need a new home? Toy valuer Kevin Bucknall will be available for toy valuations every Friday at The Auction Centre in Etwall from 10am to 4pm. For further enquiries, or to arrange a home visit for larger collections, contact the saleroom on 01283 733988 or email toys@hansonsauctioneers.co.uk.

The delightful stool, which is expected to fetch up to £80, features a revolving seat and an inverted baluster turned support.

SS Flooring 70oz Abingdon Ultimate Saxony was chosen for the kids’ bedrooms

Associated Weavers I Sense Serenity, super soft fibre in ‘Manhattan’ added a touch of luxury to the master bedroom

Style and practicality When it came to choosing new flooring for their home, the Gunnings had some very specific ideas in mind.

F

amily life can be messy. So when Ellie and Duncan Gunning were laying down the flooring in their newly renovated home in Crosspool, they wanted something both stylish and practical. With a son aged four, a daughter aged eight, and another daughter aged ten, Ellie and Duncan decided grey was the way to go. “We knew we wanted grey carpet upstairs, we just needed some guidance on the quality and shade,” says Ellie. “The colour goes with everything so as the kids get older and redecorate their bedrooms, the carpets will still match.” The couple went to Dronfield Carpets & Floors, where they were able to look through an extensive range of samples. It can be difficult to imagine how flooring will look until you take it home, so Ellie was impressed by the team who were happy to lay out the samples to demonstrate how they’d look. After trying the samples at home, Ellie

and Duncan decided on the 70oz Abingdon Ultimate Saxony in the kids’ bedrooms and guest bedroom, the harder-wearing 90oz Abingdon Ultimate Saxony in Pewter on the landing, and the softer Associated Weavers I Sense Serenity in a lighter shade of grey, called Manhattan, in the master bedroom. “The carpets in the kids’ rooms are stain resistant, so they’ll be great if we ever have spillages, but for our room we wanted something more luxurious,” continues Ellie. The Gunnings started renovating the 1960s-era family home in January 2015. Now in a position where the family can live there, all that is left is to put the finishing touches on the master bedroom’s walk-in wardrobe. The house has changed beyond recognition – inside and out and features a gorgeous wooden staircase which leads up to a huge, front-facing glass window and a dramatic glass floor covering half of the landing. Attention to detail is very important to

the fitters at Dronfield Carpets & Floors. The team skilfully fitted the carpet around the glass flooring, whilst remaining sympathetic to the designer’s vision. The fitters then finished off all the doorways with Stairrods Premier Trims Thresholds in Brushed Chrome to complete the classy and contemporary look. “The fitters were really quick,” adds Ellie. “They were really nice lads and managed to do three bedrooms in one day. They tidied up after themselves, left the extra bits of carpet behind in case we needed them, and even took the old flooring away. “Both the sales assistant Sharon and the carpet fitters were great. We love the outcome and we’d definitely recommend them to other people.” Dronfield Carpets & Floors 120 Sheffield Road, Dronfield, S18 2GE Tel: 01246 292391 www.dronfieldcarpetsandfloors.co.uk

Beauty booster Let the expert team at the Natural Look Clinic help you to make the most of your natural assets.

A

t this time of year, many of us are assessing our goals for the months ahead and considering whether we are completely content with our appearance. With summer holidays just a matter of months away and wedding season already on the horizon, we take the opportunity while it’s still chilly to iron out any imperfections before shedding our winter cover-ups. For some, this will mean finally taking the leap and booking a consultation for breast cosmetic surgery. Whether you’re unhappy with the shape, the size or the general appearance, the modern procedures available are better than ever. Trust, quality and service are no doubt top of the list for those researching the right clinic for them. The first class service and excellent results at Natural Look Clinic have been impressing clients from all over the region – and beyond – since it opened on Thorne Road two-and-a-half years ago. They are proud to offer the latest techniques for breast cosmetic surgery, liposuction, dentistry, facial injectables and much more. Specialising in enhancing your natural beauty and helping you to maintain optimum health, the clinic’s trusted and highly qualified medical professionals are among the region’s finest. Consultant surgeon Mr Kazzazi and his team take time to listen to your exact

requirements to ensure they deliver the very best – and most natural-looking – results with high quality implants. They will advise on the best size and shape, take 3D chest measurements, assess the condition of your breast tissue and analyse your skin texture. Breast implants come in various shapes and sizes, including both higher and lower profile, so you can choose whether a thicker and narrower shape or a thinner and wider shape is right for you. They offer either a round or tear-drop shape and Mr Kazzazi can insert the implant either under the muscle in your chest or between the muscle and your breast tissue. In addition to implants, there are many other options for breast cosmetic surgery at the clinic. This includes consultations for uplift and reduction, nipple correction, and surgery for non-cosmetic breast consultations. And it’s not only women looking for some of the region’s best breast services that contact the clinic, as male breast surgery – otherwise known as the treatment of ‘man

boobs’ – is also available. Using liposuction and the surgical removal of extra fat and breast tissue, it gives men the confidence to wear the clothes they want to wear without worrying about excess lumps and bumps. The CQC-approved clinic is supported by a team of NHS consultant anaesthetists and an excellent team of nursing and reception staff. Every positive comment from the clinic’s many happy clients includes a favourable mention of the staff and this excellent customer service is something on which they pride themselves. If you’re looking to improve an imperfection or highlight your best assets in the most beautiful – and natural – way, the Natural Look Clinic is an ideal choice. Payment plans and packages are also available for facial lines rejuvenation. Call the clinic on 01302 760222 to book a consultation or visit the website to find out more and take the first steps to an improved you.

espite those pesky April showers, the sun is finally shining and the days are getting longer, so why not take inspiration from our varied climate with these weather-related accessories? Less is more, so focus on one dramatic sunshine-themed piece or simply add yellow and gold accessories – metallics are on trend this year, so you can certainly

incorporate the two this season. Or if you’d rather embrace your inner child, stick to bold colours and brighten up your home and garden with bursts of rainbow shades or fun cloud and raindrop motifs. So whether you are a dedicated follower of fashion or just want to add some playful accessories to a dull home, these items will certainly do the trick this spring.

Kitchen and Bedroom Creation have now been trading from their Chatsworth Road premises for just over eight years. In that time, they have project-managed hundreds of kitchens and bedrooms for clients in the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire areas. Many of their superb jobs can be seen on their websites, www.kitchencreation.co.uk and www.kitchenschesterfield.com, and there are plenty more to be added. As part of the itch, the showroom is undergoing some interesting refurbishments, taking advantage of the fact that the company is a manufacturer of kitchen and bedroom furniture, not just a salesroom. So, taking into consideration that as a bespoke design service they can offer many styles and finishes, they are showing some new designs spray-painted in their own factory spray booths. These special finishes and bespoke sizes give the customer a much wider choice than is available in most other showrooms at no additional cost, as the products are made to order from raw materials. They also fit a variety of different worktop materials. As project managers, they can liaise with your own architect or builder, or recommend builders, plasterers, electricians and plumbers from their own accredited list of craftsmen who are part of Kitchen and Bedroom Creation’s own efficient fitting service. All work undertaken is guaranteed under Fairtrade and Homepro Insurance cover. SS Roofing

We’ve got it covered! Years of experience passed down through the family mean that Dobson Roofing Services are equipped to tackle all your roofing requirements.

R

ikki Dobson is the managing director of Dobson Roofing Services Limited. He started in the roofing industry in the late seventies working for his father Maurice's company, Dobson and Greaves, of Gleadless, Sheffield. Dobson Roofing Services was founded in 1982 by Maurice and his two sons, Paul and Rikki. Maurice ran the company until 1990 when he retired and Rikki became the manager director. Located at 109-111 Chesterfield Road, Dronfield, the company is ideally placed to serve the people of Sheffield, North Derbyshire and Hope Valley. Their services include flat roofing membranes, including EPDM and high tensile roofing felts, slating and tiling, natural stone slating, UPVC fascia and soffits, all types of guttering timber, PVC and aluminium, and Velux roof lights and roof joinery. Dobson Roofing has worked on many memorable and historical venues included reroofing of the towers at Howden and Derwent Dams, famous for the Dambusters’ flyovers, and The Roundhouse Railway Engine Sheds at Barrowhill in Chesterfield, which is one of the last working rail turntables in Britain and is now famous for hosting concerts by the likes of Jools Holland and Paul Weller. They also completely re-roofed the Chesterfield Bus Depot all the way back in 1983, including all new metal decking and insulation. The roof has remained 100 per cent waterproof and has outlasted its ten-

year guarantee by 23 years. As well as these projects, Dobson Roofing has re-roofed over 2,000 domestic properties, 40 schools, ten university buildings and five hospitals. Recent contracts include the Lyric Theatre in Dinnington for Rotherham Council and Greendale Court in Dronfield for Rykneld Homes. They offer a free advisory and estimates service and a full detailed report to customers. Their guarantees range from ten to 20 years. The third generation of Dobson's have now entered into the family business including Rikki’s son Ross and daughter Georgina, who have been working for the company since leaving school. Ross deals with site visits and surveys along with being National Examination Board in Occupational

Safety and Health (NEBOSH) qualified in health and safety. Georgina handles the IT side of the business. Rikki says: “The vast knowledge my father acquired during his 50 years in the roofing industry has been passed on from father to son. This knowledge and experience has also been shared with our staff, many of whom have worked for the company for over 20 years. Over the last 30 years there has been a significant improvement in the quality of materials used in the roofing industry and this, alongside improvements in health and safety, as well as the higher skill levels of roofing operatives, have helped do away with cowboy builders and roofers who have plagued our industry for so long. So make sure your roofing contractor is a member of National Federation of Roofing Contractors. “I have enjoyed my career in roofing over the last 38 years and the improvements that have been made. The roofing industry stood still for so long; methods and styles didn't change much from the 1900s to the 1970s. Technology finally caught up, however many of the traditional methods in roofing remain the same, and rightly so. “We at Dobson Roofing pride ourselves on doing a good job at a fair price.” For further information, check out the company’s website www.dobsonroofingservices.co.uk.

SS Spring Homes

HOME TRUTHS

It’s time to spruce up your home in time for spring with the help of these top experts.

A

s the days get warmer and brighter, it’s time to spring clean our homes and venture into our gardens. But with so much contradictory gardening and décor advice out there, it’s difficult to know where to begin. That’s why we’ve dug out the best pieces of home and garden advice from the biggest experts in the business. From Britain’s favourite gardening experts, to cleaners and interior designers, let the professionals help you get your home and garden into shape this season – weather permitting.

Words: Phoebe Seymour

SOUTHSIDE 36

THE GARDEN GURUS Alan Titchmarsh says… get your soil up to scratch Your garden soil is likely to be in poor condition right now, after the wet winter has washed away many of its nutrients. So one of the very first jobs to do, is to get the soil up to scratch – then it can nurture all your plants, just as they’re starting to grow. Feed beds and borders with any good general fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone or another organic alternative. Sprinkle it on by hand all over the soil, applying it underneath shrubs and round the base of climbers, perennials and clumps of bulbs. Trickle a line of fertiliser along the base of all your hedges – they’ll be feeling fairly starved after this winter and spring is the perfect time to feed them. Fruit trees, bushes and canes also benefit from a good start-of-the-season feed, so use the same general fertiliser for those too. But since they need extra potash to encourage flowering and fruiting, also give them sulphate of potash (at half an ounce per square yard). This same “cocktail” is a good late-spring feed for clematis, which is a greedy plant and also appreciates extra potash.

Carol Klein says… sow your seeds Outdoors, self-sown seedlings are beginning to peep out in beds and borders, but the greenhouse is heaving with life. Providing it has been stored in a cool, dry place and out of bright sunlight, most seed is raring to go. Any pot or recycled container will do for your sowing as long as it has drainage holes (imperative) and a reasonable depth (at least 5cm). What are we sowing? Lots of veg. Fill containers liberally with peat-free seed compost and firm gently to produce a level surface just below the rim of the pot or tray. Sprinkle small seeds on the surface of the compost by pinching with thumb and forefinger or tapping from your palm; it doesn't matter how you do it as long as the seed is sown finely. The biggest cause of death in seedlings is from damping off, a fungal disease that makes them collapse. And the main reason for damping off is sowing too thickly. Cover seed with a layer of sharp grit, emulating what would happen in nature. The grit helps stop the seed being washed away yet retains moisture underneath and provides drainage around the shoots. If seedlings are there for any length of time, grit also deters weeds and liverwort from taking hold.

Monty Don says… select seasonal flowers After the first delicate bulbs of early spring and the pastel flush of yellow that follows with daffodils, tulips bring colour like a carnival to the garden. The earliest will start flowering at the beginning of April, but the end of the month and well into May is their prime season. Before choosing your bulbs, it is worth remembering where tulips come from so that the ground can be properly prepared. They mainly originate from an area that now occupies Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Armenia, where they grow on shale slopes. This means they have very sharp drainage so they never sit in the wet. Give them as much sun as you have and – most importantly – do whatever you can to improve the drainage. If you have very wet, cold soil, it is a good idea to grow new bulbs in containers. The bulbs can then be lifted in due course and the best surviving bulbs from the containers planted into the borders. Not all tulips flower at the same time. It is much easier to plant tulips of the same type and group such as lily-flowered, triumph or parrot tulips together.

THE HOME HEROES Aggie Mackenzie says… spring clean Start with a small room so you won't feel daunted. Make a list of what you have, and what you no longer need. Divide everything into categories, such as paper, gadgets, clothes, books. Take out everything that needs to be cleaned – and I mean everything, including the curtains. If you haven't used something for more than a year, out it goes. If it holds very dear memories, start a memory box. Divide everything into: things that are useless and have to be thrown away; items that can be recycled; and things you can give to friends. Then start assembling your piles. Once you've collected everything, act immediately – go to the tip, the charity shop or the recycling depot. Bring in a basin of hot, soapy water. Clean those ledges. Clean windows until they shine. Dust the lamp. Get the vacuum attachment and clean the dark corners. This takes time – don't expect to do more than two rooms a day.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen says… substance before style Many people place maintenance way down their list of property essentials, preferring to spend money on more immediately glamorous items, but there's no point in buying a costly, luxurious carpet or rug for your bedroom, if two months later a leak caused by faulty roof tiles means you have to replace it. There is nothing stylish about damp. Preventive care is the best form of maintenance - it's the least intrusive and, in the end, it's the least expensive. Get the basics right - and then you can have fun! The great irony is that if most of us spent a little time and money on some simple maintenance, in the long run we'd probably have more to spend on the, admittedly, exciting creative and imaginative aspects of home ownership.

Kelly Hoppen says… lighten up Accessories and décor, or home jewellery as I like to call it, provide those little accents that add beauty and personality to a home. Build a collection of staple pieces, such as coral and vases, which can conveniently be changed with the seasons. Choose your shades carefully – the colours and themes used in your home can have a great impact. I am notorious for my love of taupe – I use it so much because it’s a gorgeous shade that always provides a chic, timeless look. Lighting is crucial and has such a big impact on a room. For an affordable and unique touch, place uplighters by the edges of your curtains, which will light up the ceiling.

Walk the walk Redbrik’s marketing has the wow factor.

R

edbrik Estate Agency prides itself on its innovative marketing approach which gets vendors and landlords the results they deserve. The company’s latest addition to its comprehensive and bespoke marketing package is already receiving rave reviews from vendors and landlords alike. Redbrik recently launched ‘3D Walkthrough’, an online experience that lets home movers explore a property and see it from every angle. It allows users to get a completely unique sense for the place with a ‘dolls house’ view. It is the most realistic and immersive way to experience a property online. Redbrik is the first estate agent in the North of England to be offering this cutting edge technology to their clients. Mark Ross, Director at Redbrik Estate Agency, said: “We are delighted by the response we have had since launching the 3D

Walkthrough. The feedback from vendors and landlords has been phenomenal – the images the camera produces certainly have the wow factor and we genuinely believe that they make every home look its absolute best. “It really is an amazing piece of technology and it has already started to revolutionise the way we market our properties. This is the best thing in estate agency marketing in the world right now and we are delighted to have brought it to Sheffield, Chesterfield and North Derbyshire. “Outstanding marketing ensures that we can get vendors the best possible price for their property and the 3D Walkthrough has certainly taken our marketing package to another level. “We initially purchased the camera to market our sales properties, however it is a fantastic tool for the lettings side of our business. It will allows landlords to market their property superbly without disturbing tenants and also acts as an amazing inventory

because the detail of the property is there for all to see.” To celebrate the launch of the 3D Walkthrough, Redbrik is currently offering Southside readers the opportunity to experience the new technology for free when instructing Redbrik to sell.Vendors need to quote ‘Southside Redbrik 3D’ when booking a valuation in order to qualify for the offer. Young singers from Chesterfield’s St Peter and St Paul Independent School have been hitting the high notes after making it to the finals of the Barnardo’s National Choral Competition at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The choir is set to participate in the finals of the Llangollen International Eisteddfod on 6 July and the Year 5 and 6 children will be performing Oliver on 11 and 12 July this year. The newly-formed under-13s Chamber Choir sang in the junior section of the event alongside 17 other school choirs from across the country before performing again in an evening concert. “The choir’s singing in the Royal Festival Hall surpassed everyone’s expectations,” says the school’s head of music, Cathy Chapman. “They did splendidly and we are intensely proud of them all.” Participation in prestigious events like this reflects the breadth of opportunity available to pupils at one of the region’s most successful independent primary schools. St Peter and St Paul is the highest ranked independent school in Derbyshire in The Sunday Times Parent Power list and achieves the highest Key Stage 2 results of any independent school in Derbyshire. As a non-selective school for boys and girls they deliver a highquality education with outstanding opportunities for all children. Pupils here are encouraged to be active, responsible, independent learners and responsible citizens, making the most of the many varied opportunities available to them. Headmaster Jonathon Clark says: “We ensure that all of our children are ready to meet the challenges and demands awaiting them in the next stage of their education and beyond.”

SS Chesterfield Champions

What was the big announcement at this year’s Celebrate Chesterfield event? Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, reveals all.

T

he annual Celebrate Chesterfield event, which was held in March, has become a hot ticket amongst the business community and I am pleased to report that this year was no different. Celebrate, which was held at the Winding Wheel, was fully booked weeks ahead of the event; and it’s no wonder. At last year’s Celebrate it was announced that more than £1bn of development was taking place in the Borough over the next ten years, so the question on everybody’s lips at Celebrate 2016 was, ‘What will be this year’s big announcement?’ Celebrate 2016 didn’t disappoint; after years of planning and preparation it was announced that the Chesterfield Waterside project is to make significant progress over the next few months. A planning application for consent to prepare the development platforms and infrastructure for the redevelopment, and indicating the scale and massing of the buildings to be constructed on the site of the former Trebor Factory site,

has now been submitted. The conclusion of this important stage in the planning process will pave the way for the creation of up to 300 jobs on this phase of the £320million mixed-use development, which will transform the A61 corridor. If consent is granted, it is planned to commence the infrastructure works in the summer. Add to this the fact that preparation work has started on the £400million Peak Resort at Unstone and the new University of Derby campus at Chesterfield College; work on the redevelopment of the former Co-op building on Elder Way is also soon to get underway. The evidence is that the £1bn of development we talked about in 2015 is making real headway in 2016. Where once Chesterfield was seen as a sleepy little town with a declining industrial sector, it is acknowledged locally, regionally, nationally and internationally as a town that is going places and attracting investment. Let us not forget our retail sector also – whilst the high street of every other town in the UK was in decline, ours not only

survived but performed well. Chesterfield is an excellent example of where high street chain stores have blended with niche, independent shops and a historic market to create a shopping destination that both local people and those from further afield want to visit, and to spend their money. I am delighted that, once again, we will be celebrating this thriving sector of the town in May with the popular Chesterfield Retail Awards. Tickets for this event, as ever, are also in demand and we have had to move to a larger space within the Winding Wheel. We’re not complaining though; bigger is better!
