The real meaning of Christmas As we prepare to deck the halls with holly, Phoebe Seymour meets the man who knows exactly what makes it the season to be jolly…
W
hen you hang tinsel on a Christmas tree, pull a cracker or get merry at the office party, do you ever stop to think about why we celebrate Christmas in the way we do? The Nativity is a huge part of Christmas, but the festival has slowly changed, adapting to more recent traditions and customs to become the Christmas we know today. And what about our other traditions such as Christmas trees in our homes, the idea that
Christmases should be white and the origins of Santa Claus? Where do all these customs come from? Former University of Sheffield lecturer and author of The Christmas Book, Dr Patrick Harding has been demystifying our festive customs for the past 20 years. In his book, Patrick explains where all these customs come from, but before we get into all the weird and wonderful reasons why we celebrate Christmas in the way we do, let’s start with the birth of Jesus …
The Nativity
Christmas before Christianity
“The accounts may have been slightly changed over 2,000 years, but what I like to do is see if there is any science to back the nativity story up,” says Patrick. It shouldn’t come as much of a shock that Jesus wasn’t born on 25 December, nor was he born on what we think to be the year 0AD. After much research, Patrick discovered that Jesus was actually born in September 7BC. For Patrick, the most important part of the nativity story is the star, which wasn’t a star at all. David Hughes, an astronomer from The University of Sheffield, introduced Patrick to the idea of triple conjunctions. These occur when Jupiter and Saturn align in the constellation of Pisces, creating a light that would have looked like a bright star. The magi (or wise men) who followed this ‘star’ may have even realised the significance of this rare event, as Jupiter represents the king of the gods, Saturn signifies the land of Palestine and Pisces is the sign of the zodiac which represents the Jews. Combine this with the fact that one of these triple conjunctions took place in 7BC and that scientists have worked out that Jesus was born between 8 and 6BC, and this fits Patrick’s theory. “Of course, it sounds silly to say Jesus was born in 7BC, but does it matter? I just look at 25 December as Jesus’s official birthday, a bit like the queen,” says Patrick.
So why do we celebrate Christmas on 25 December? Those who think our customs are all centred around Christianity may be surprised. “The 25th is the most important day for a competing religion called Mithraism,” says Patrick. “If you believe in the teachings of Mithras, your god is the sun and what I find interesting is that the 25th is just after the shortest day. If you believe god is in the sun, you get a bit upset because your god isn’t getting out of bed very early but as soon as it starts rising again, it means god is still there. So followers of Mithras may very well have looked out the window and said ‘Our sun is risen!’” Roman Emperor Constantine followed Mithraism before converting to Christianity, but the date and many other Christmas customs were carried over from other religious festivals. The Romans would celebrate the god Saturn with a festival called Saturnalia from 17 to 24 December, a time of overeating (saturnus means plenty) and general boisterousness as well as a time for visiting friends and exchanging presents.

Dr Patrick Harding
Santa, drugs and St Nicholas’s gold Over the years Santa Claus, Father Christmas and St Nicholas have all combined to create one big fat figure in a red and white suit who delivers presents to children. When the Dutch immigrants landed in New York (originally New Amsterdam) in the 17th century, they brought Sinter Claes (or Sinterklaas) with them. The idea of Father Christmas started in Germany with the Norse god Odin, who would ride an eight-legged horse through the sky and fill children’s boots with treats. And then there was 4th century figure, Saint Nicholas, who originated in Turkey. “There’s a story about a friend of St Nicholas who couldn’t afford his three daughters’ weddings,” explains Patrick. “So, St Nicholas throws a bag of gold through each daughter’s window. However, the youngest daughter has her wedding in the winter. She shuts her window, so he climbs up onto the roof and drops the final bag of gold down the chimney.” Lapland has also played a huge part. Tribes who made their living off reindeer in Northern Lapland would live in yurts with small openings to let in visitors and let out smoke. When people were ill, witch doctors would enter through these chimney-like entrances and deliver gifts of healing. Patrick also explains why our modern day Santa is represented as ‘merry’. “In Lapland you can’t easily make alcohol because of the low temperatures,” explains Patrick. “But they realised that the red and white mushroom is hallucinogenic and if you take it, you get the feeling that you are leaving your body and flying through the air – ho, ho, ho!” This may very well have triggered the colour scheme of today’s Santa suit. Coca-Cola cemented the image with a Santa wearing a red and white to match their logo.

Just like the ones I used to know As we move away from the nativity story and the meaning of Christmas and its customs changes generation by generation, are we losing sight of what it’s all about? “I always say to people, Christmas never stays the same but I think that’s why it has been so successful,” says Patrick. “Even if we are not Christian we can celebrate it.” Patrick’s years of research have done nothing to take the magic out of his family’s Christmases. If anything, it has helped him not to take this often stressful time too seriously. “My kids have left now. It is important to me and my wife as a family time, but if either of our children wants to go to their prospective boyfriend’s or girlfriend’s families for Christmas, it doesn’t bother us because one of the sad things I find about Christmas now is the arguments and the ill feeling that goes on. “It shouldn’t be like that, it should be a time when people relax and enjoy themselves, eat a bit too much, and drink a bit too much, so we try to be laid back about it.” So what is the true meaning of Christmas for Patrick? “Christmas is a time when the difference between the haves and the haves not is very obvious. I think it is a time when one should reflect on the number of people, especially up north, who are in need of food banks. “I’ve dedicated this book to my father-in-law, Jack Binney, who was every bit as generous as Father Christmas, and there are a lot of other people who are generous and who give. The thing about St Nicholas is he gave without making a fuss about it. The daughters in the story didn’t know where the gold had come from.” So don’t be a humbug this Christmas. Bask in one of our many festive traditions and embrace your inner Father Christmas. Whatever part or version of the Christmas story you choose to follow and however many years have gone by, the message remains the same; celebrate in style and give as much as you can to others. The Christmas Book: A Treasury of Festive Facts by Patrick Harding is available from Amazon, eBay and all good book stores.
Wondering where our other traditions come from? Dr Patrick Harding reveals more about our Christmas customs… HOLLY, IVY & MISTLETOE – They’re all evergreen and signify the eternal nature of Jesus. The red berries on holly represent blood and the prickly leaves are Jesus’ crown of thorns. CHRISTMAS TREES – Many German immigrants already put up Christmas trees in Britain and they were used by the royal family 50 years prior to Prince Albert bringing them over from Germany, but after a picture of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children, stood in front of a Christmas tree was published in the Illustrated London News in 1848, the decoration soon became popular throughout British households.
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
WHITE CHRISTMASES – Writer Charles Dickens was born into something of a mini ice age in London and his Christmases were always snowy. A Christmas Carol was a huge part of a Victorian Christmas revival and many customs from this novel have survived today. CRANBERRIES – In the 90s, the US had a glut of cranberries left over from Thanksgiving so decided to convince Britain to eat them with their turkeys too. Delia Smith’s popular Christmas cookery book came out soon after and was filled with recipes full of cranberries. Most supermarkets sold out and the fruit became a national hit.
DID YOU KNOW… Sheffield has the biggest amateur pantomime in Britain? The Manor Operatic Society has been performing at the City Hall for many years. Some will remember the legendary dame, Brian Platts.

SS Remembrance
Keeping the flame alive Christmas can be a difficult time for the bereaved which is why John Fairest Funeral Directors hold a special service to remember loved ones we have lost. hristmas is a wonderful time for families to get together, but it can also be a painful reminder of those family members and friends that are no longer
C
with us. John Fairest Funeral Directors understand how difficult this time of year can be, which is why they hold an annual Christmas memorial Service on the second Sunday of December. The funeral home on Abbey Lane in Woodseats welcomes all the families they have looked after over the past eight years. This year the Christmas Memorial Service takes place on Sunday 13 December at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium at 2pm. The service provides a time and place for reflection, as well as a supportive environment for past clients. The service will include carol singing and the lighting of a candle in memory of loved ones. Refreshments are also served after the service. From Tuesday 1 December, there will be a memorial Christmas tree in the reception area of the funeral home, where clients past and present can write messages of remembrance on stars and attach them to the tree. All messages from previous years have been wrapped up and put under the tree. Branch manager Wayne Pickering has 18 years experience working in various areas of the funeral industry and

believes in catering for clients at all stages. “Our main aim is to look after our families. When clients first come to make arrangements, they are at their lowest point,“ he says. “We promise to plan everything with clarity, respect and reassurance and to listen, advise and guide you through all your options before, during and after the arrangements.” John Fairest is one of the most established and trusted funeral directors in Sheffield, they have had a presence on Penistone Road North for over 100 years, whilst the Abbey Lane branch opened its doors in 2007. Janice Mason and Claire Whitehouse of the Abbey Lane team understand that every person is different and as such, every funeral they arrange is a unique tribute to a unique life. John Fairest is one of the largest providers of pre-paid funeral plans in the city. This allows you to plan your funeral in advance and ensures that your funeral will be carried out as you want it. By being prepared today, you will be helping your loved ones tomorrow. John Fairest also do monumental

SS Chesterfield Champions
These are exciting times for our town, writes Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield.
W
hat a prosperous year Chesterfield has had and our employment figures bear this out. For the first time since records began the town’s job seekers’ allowance claimant figures fell below the national average in August. I think that this year has been a turning point for the town, with so many developments in the pipeline equating to more than £1billion of investment taking place within the borough over the next 10 years. Much of this investment is already underway with contractors on site at Chesterfield Waterside and Markham Vale. Following the competition of the first phase of housing at Chesterfield Waterside, 2016 will see work on the exciting second phase begin and work is expected to begin on site at Peak in spring. The marketing and hard work during 2015 is paying off, as I believe that Markham Vale Business Park has become the go-to destination for national and international investors relocating here and creating hundreds of jobs, with more set for next year. I personally find this very exciting for
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Chesterfield’s young people as it is giving them more choice and opportunity. Ahead of these exciting developments, Destination Chesterfield has worked hard through the Made in Chesterfield festival to raise awareness of the jobs and careers available in the manufacturing sector so that companies relocating and expanding here have a ready and able workforce now and in the future. As well as all the developments already underway, 2016 will hopefully see plans for the former Co-op department store take shape and become a reality. The redevelopment of such an iconic town centre building has the potential to enhance the town’s offering, helping us attract further investment and make us the go-to destination for shoppers and tourists. There is no doubting the development potential of Chesterfield but it’s also important to recognise what is already here – for example, the hundreds of independent businesses that have weathered the economic downturn and survived – many of these were honoured at the Chesterfield Retail Awards and Food and Drink Awards this year. Both sets of awards were our most successful yet
with more nominations received than ever before and each award ceremony larger than the previous year, yet still a sell-out. The events are now well established in the town’s social calendar and a great example of the many independent businesses that combine to make Chesterfield such a unique and going-places town. With Christmas around the corner, local independent businesses are busier than ever producing fabulous food, drink and products and there is no better time to support and celebrate them. There are an abundance of bars, restaurants and shops that deliver homegrown produce and gifts that are perfect for the festive period and all year round. I urge you to take advantage of them. By supporting our local businesses you are supporting the local economy, creating more jobs for the people that live here. What a great year 2015 has been Chesterfield, let’s make 2016 even bigger and better. SOUTHSIDE 21

I
f you are entertaining friends and family this Christmas here are some fabulous recipes from Cocina, the award-winning Spanish themed restaurant in Chesterfield’s Casa Hotel, to get everyone in a party mood. With so many heavy meals to be eaten at this time of year, it’s a relief to find a tasty alternative and be offered something light and delicious – especially when it proves to be the perfect accompaniment for a glass of something sparkling. This is what makes Spanish-style tapas the perfect party food. Head chef Andy Wilson says: “Tapas dishes, are in my opinion, the perfect food for a celebration, a cocktail party and especially a Christmas party. This is due to the nature of tapas, the main amount of work is done before your guests arrive so you can also enjoy your evening socialising with guests, rather than being stuck in the kitchen all night. “Due to the nature of their Spanish origin, tapas dishes can be served throughout the evening in either individual portions or in the more Spanish traditional of sharing platters so that everyone can just help themselves. This encourages a laid back, relaxed feel to the evening, which everyone can enjoy – including the host – with the added bonus of less pots to wash at the end of the evening. “Most Tapas dishes are very simple to create, but full of flavour. Dishes such as Pan con Tomate and Pimientos de Padron are incredibly quick and easy but both are sure party favourites.”

Tapas is the perfect food for a celebration or Christmas party, says Casa Hotel’s head chef, Andy Wilson.
Albondigas con tomate Serves 4 Ingredients For the albondigas (meatballs): Olive oil, for cooking 226g (8oz) minced pork or beef 50g fresh breadcrumbs 3 cloves finely chopped garlic 50g finely grated manchego cheese 2 sprigs fresh thyme, picked and finely chopped 15g hot paprika Salt and pepper, to season 1 beaten egg For the sauce: Olive oil, for cooking 1 onion, peeled and finely diced 1 stick celery, peeled and finely diced 2 cloves peeled and chopped garlic 1 medium-hot red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 bay leaf 100ml red wine 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes
Chef’s tip: Serve with spaghetti as a main course rather than a tapas.
Method 1. Start with the sauce: in a saucepan, add a splash of olive oil followed by the onion, celery, garlic, chilli and bay leaf and sweat off until soft. Add the wine and reduce till the pan is nearly dry. Add the chopped tomatoes and simmer for 20-30 minutes. 2. In a large bowl, add all the meatball ingredients and mix either with a spoon or with clean hands until the ingredients are combined completely. 3. Season to taste (Tip: fry a little of the meatball mix to check the seasoning and adjust to taste). 4. Shape into 16-20 balls and place in the fridge for 20 minutes to firm up. When firm, put a pan onto the heat – either use a pan big enough to fit all of the meatballs in, or do them in smaller batches. Add a little olive oil and fry the meatballs for a few minutes until they are nicely browned. 5. Add the meatballs to your sauce, which should have started to thicken by now, and simmer for roughly 20 minutes or until the meatballs are cooked through. 6. Taste, and season accordingly. Serve either with or without crusty bread.

Pan con tomate Serves 4 Ingredients 4 slices crusty bread or baguette (slightly stale is fine) 1 clove peeled garlic 2 very ripe vine or plum tomatoes, at room temperature Extra virgin olive oil, to serve Salt, to season
Method 1. Slice and toast the bread – not too thinly – and rub generously with the raw garlic. 2. Cut your tomatoes (which should be at room temperature to improve the flavour) in half and rub the cut side across your toasted bread, squashing and rubbing in the tomato as you do so. 3. Drizzle with olive oil, season with a little salt and serve.
Cajun calamari Seves 4 Ingredients 2 crushed garlic cloves 100ml good quality mayonnaise 20g chopped parsley 12.5g baking powder 25g Cajun seasoning 150g cornflour (100g for the batter, 50g for coating the squid) 400ml ice cold soda water 500g baby squid, cleaned and sliced into rings 1 lemon, cut into quarters You will also need: A deep-fat fryer Rapeseed oil, for cooking – enough to fill the fryer
Method 1. Mix the garlic, mayonnaise and chopped parsley together and put into 4 small ramekins. In a bowl, add your baking powder, Cajun seasoning and 200g of cornflour. Pre-heat your fryer to 180ºC 2. At the last minute, add the soda water to the cornflour mix and whisk until it has reached a consistency similar to single cream. Don’t overwork the batter – a few lumps are fine. 3. Dust the squid with the remaining cornflour – this will allow the batter to stick to the squid itself. Dip in the batter, remove it and allow any excess batter to fall off the squid. Lower the squid gently into the oil. Keep it moving at all times whilst in the oil, otherwise it will clump together and not be crisp. Fry the squid in small batches or the oil will cool down and make the squid soggy. 4. Serve on plates with a lemon wedge and the dipping dish of garlic mayonnaise.
Pimientos de Padrón Serves 4 Ingredients 400g pimientos de Padrón, rinsed in water 60ml olive oil 50g Maldon salt flakes Method 1. This is an incredibly simple dish but also one of the more commonly available and traditional tapas. Roughly one in ten of the peppers are incredibly hot which makes this a great dish to share with friends, as when someone eats one of the spicy peppers the reaction is normally quite hilarious. 2.You want a good heavy-based sauté pan. Get the pan on your burner as high as it will go, and when the pan is hot, add the oil and straight away add the peppers and the majority of the salt. You want the pepper skins to blister and colour to an even golden brown. 3. As soon as the peppers are tender – after about 3 minutes – transfer them to your serving dish and scatter with the remaining salt. They are ideal with cold beer, as this is a true bar tapas.
These recipes and more are available in Mi Casa by Steve Perez, published by RMC Books and available from Casa and Amazon.co.uk

SS Eating Out
Words: Richard Smith
Raising the stakes Family rivalry is helping to drive this Dronfield restaurant forward – to fantastic effect.
B
rotherly love’s all very well but there’s nothing like a little sibling rivalry to get the competitive juices flowing. So when you are taking your first steps in the restaurant trade and big brother already runs a highly regarded restaurant, you can be sure the stakes are that little bit higher. And sure enough, Habib Rahman, one of the team behind The Nawabs Brasserie, in Dronfield, will admit to wanting to beat brother Mizan, at his own game. Mizan runs Prithi Raj on Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, which has twice been named best Indian in the restaurant awards run by Southside’s sister magazine, Westside. It’s a friendly rivalry – the brothers each encourage customers to try the other’s establishment – but there’s no doubt that Nawabs is out to pinch a bit of the Prithi Raj glory. And the early signs are good. This time last year, Nawabs was a somewhat jaded eatery housed in a former pub. But a classy makeover during the summer has given it a new lease of life. The red-carpeted entrance leads to a welcoming and comfortable bar and the dining room feels luxurious, with bright fabrics and shining white table linen creating an up-market ambience that’s a long way from your stereotypical post-pub curry house. And the menu’s been brushed up too with some more familiar northern Indian dishes added to chef Neepur Ali’s repertory of southern Indian specials, featuring the region’s characteristically more astringent tastes. The downside of being Britain’s
SOUTHSIDE 26
favourite foreign cuisine means it is unusual to find something truly unusual on Indian restaurant menus, but Nawabs manages it with some intriguing dishes and flavour combinations on offer. We started traditionally enough with some satisfyingly crispy poppodoms and an impressive pickle tray – red chilli mango sauce and deliciously sticky, sweet raisin sauce were new ones on me. A luxuriously rich prawn puree, flavoured with coconut, came inside a giant bowl of delicate pastry while my starter of subtlyspiced fish tikka got the meal off to a truly sizzling start. Despite the macho temptation and in the interests of self-preservation, I side-stepped the ze zaal – chicken or lamb cooked with naga chillies ‘the world’s hottest’ – and opted for another unfamiliar dish, chicken shatkora, featuring a spicy combination of fresh chillies, ginger, tomato sauce and wild Bangladeshi citrus, which provided a real lemony zing. Across the table, Grill fangash came with a bowl of deep-red tamarind sauce adding sweet and sour tartness to slices of Bay of Bengal fish delicately flavoured with herbs and spices. Garlic naan and pilau rice were perfect accompaniments and, demonstrating the kitchen’s preparedness to go off-menu if necessary, Habib recommended a special side dish of thinly-sliced spiced potato as a side dish. It’s early days for the new-look Nawabs Brasserie and there’s a bit of catching up to do in the awards department, but I doubt it’ll be long before there’s a plaque or two adorning the walls – it’s got my vote already.

SPIRIT OF CUBA
After blazing a Latin trail in the early noughties, Cubana are now firmly established as one of the top party venues in the city.
I
t was 15 years ago that Cubana burst onto the Sheffield nightlife scene, offering a burst of joyous Havana sunshine on a sleepy back street a short shimmy away from the city centre. Looking at all the multicultural restaurants, bars and music venues in Sheffield, it is easy to take the wide variety of food, drink and sounds from around the world for granted. But it hasn’t always been such a hotbed of diversity, and Cubana was one of the trailblazers that helped breathe new life into Sheffield. Now the salsa venue is celebrating a landmark anniversary… and it is as fresh and vibrant as ever. First unleashed on an unsuspecting public in November 2000, Latin music, salsa dancing, spicy tapas food and colourful cocktails all blended, bringing people together in a fun and friendly setting. Now based in Leopold Square, the Latin beat pulses stronger than ever.

First Steps Co-owner Adrian Bagnoli first got into Latin music whilst visiting a popular Brazilian nightclub called the Maracanã in Florence, Italy. Adrian was amazed by the lively atmosphere and was convinced that this was exactly the kind of night out Sheffield needed. “Back then, the only type of dancing you’d find couples doing would be the slow, smoochy style at the end of the night, in a cheesy nightclub,” explains Adrian. “The only Latin music people knew was The Gipsy Kings and La Bamba. We decided the time was ripe to introduce a bit more culture to Sheffield.” Adrian and friends Toni Dente and Gian Bohan started by launching a Viva Salsa night at local nightclub Club Uropa (formerly Isabellas), booking Brazilian DJ Marcus Vinicius and a live Brazilian band called Viramundo for the opening night. An astounding 700 people attended the first event in June 1996, making Sheffield’s first salsa club night an undeniable success. “This really paved the way for us,” says Adrian. “Calendar News came to cover it and the atmosphere was incredible. It gave us lots of confidence and we started booking touring bands from Cuba and Latin-American bands based in London and Manchester.” The final Viva Salsa took place in May 2000 and it was then that Adrian joined forces with Brad Charlesworth and Kito Morales to open Cubana on Trippet Lane.
Cubana Mk. I – Trippet Lane Getting the look of the venue right was just as important as creating the authentic tapas dishes and cocktails, so Adrian employed talented architect and close friend Paul Brady, to capture a true Latin vibe. “We offered something different – people felt like they’d discovered something great tucked away on this backstreet in the city centre,” says Adrian. “There wasn’t another tapas bar in Sheffield at the time. “We’d already built up contacts with the Latino community from the Viva Salsa night, so they were on board as soon as they discovered we’d be offering live music.” Cubana had fast become a popular venue for couples, as well as a great place for singletons to mingle. Many long-term couples comment on how they first met or how they had their first dates there – proof that music is the food of love.
Cubana Live
Omar Puente and his band
One of Cubana’s proudest moments was hosting a night at Music In The Gardens Festival 2010 in the Botanical Gardens. Cubana Live attracted a sell-out crowd of over 3,500 people and helped raise thousands of pounds for local charities. The extravaganza offered some of the most popular Latin artists, including Omar Puente and his band. The group arrived in chauffeurdriven 1957 Chevrolet convertibles and pulled up in front of the stage, before delivering an amazing performance.

Over the years, Cubana have been honoured to welcome many memorable guests. A visit from legendary Cuban band the Buena Vista Social Club in 2007 was certainly a highlight and Adrian was overwhelmed when the band returned after their second Sheffield City Hall gig in 2008. Not least, because the highlight of their second visit was when Buena Vista’s pianist Rolando Luna took up the offer of playing the classic Latin favourite ‘Guantamanera’ alongside the house band on a piano specially hired in for the occasion. “It was just incredible, the place erupted and the atmosphere was electric – it was a very special night,” confirms Adrian. Lady Salsa Once at their new premises at Leopold Square, Cubana was given the ultimate seal of approval when Dr Aleida Guevara, daughter of famous Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara, visited for dinner and posed for a picture underneath the portrait of her father. Other notable guests include Panamanian boxer Roberto Duran, once considered to be the best pound-for-pound fighter of all time, who visited in 2003 and the cast of Lady Salsa Brad and Adrian with following a performance at Roberto Duran (centre) the Lyceum Theatre. “There’s great flavoursome food, exotic cocktails, friendly customer service, chilled-out live music and vibrant music to dance to – all under one roof.” Cubana Mk. II – Leopold Square After 14 years building up a reputation as the most vibrant independent Cuban bar in Sheffield, it was time to say goodbye to Trippet Lane. Adrian discovered the two-level venue, formerly Platillos in Leopold Square, had become available. After a discussion with business partner Brad, they decided the time was right to move. Adrian and his team enlisted the help of local artist Paul Staveley and Paul Brady once again to recreate Cubana’s trademark style. Just four days after closing the Trippet Lane venue, the new Cubana was opened. “The final Saturday night at the old Cubana felt like a New Year’s Eve party; people were looking forward to a potentially exciting future,” Adrian recalls. “We opened with a big party on Thursday 24 July. Over 400 people turned up and it was an incredible atmosphere. We knew right then, from everyone’s reaction that it was going to work.” Now offering two floors for two different nights out, diners can enjoy the cosy upstairs area or party downstairs. Cubana turn over around 300 diners on a Saturday night, many of which stay all night. “You could walk in at 7pm and end up staying until we close at 2am,” says Adrian. “There’s great flavoursome food, courtesy of Chilean head chef Fabrian Cruz who has been in charge of kitchen affairs since day one, exotic cocktails, friendly customer service, chilled-out live music and vibrant music to dance to – all under one roof.” Cubana’s Salsa In The Square has also been a huge success. Since Cubana has taken over hosting the Bank Holiday Sunday extravaganza, attendance numbers have doubled and Adrian looks forward to offering a live Cuban salsa band, salsa lessons, dance demos and more in May 2016. So, after 14 years brightening up Trippet Lane and a successful first year adding a vibrant mix of Cuban flavour to Leopold Square, how will Adrian and his team be celebrating their success? “Of course, there will be a big party, but Brad and I are going over to Cuba in January too,” says Adrian. “It’s such a great place and we’ll get loads of inspiration. We’ll be treating that as our 15th birthday present.” If you’re looking for a lively venue with the full package, Cubana can provide the delicious food, the colourful cocktails and the live entertainment to start your festive season. Residence Nil Rate Band – Clarifying the new inheritance tax rule changes Nick Rhodes, Associate Solicitor in the Private Client Team at Blacks Solicitors LLP guides us in upcoming changes to inheritance tax rules and what they will actually mean to you and me.
F
ollowing the Tory election victory in May, Chancellor George Osborne announced his intention to introduce changes to the inheritance tax rules. Currently, each person can leave £325,000 which is free of inheritance tax (the ‘nil-rate band’) and therefore, a married couple (or civil partners) can pass on a total of £650,000 between them, free of inheritance tax. The Chancellor has announced that, with effect from April 2017, a new ‘residence nil rate band’ will also be available for when someone leaves their home to their direct descendants (children and stepchildren, but not nephews or nieces). In such cases, there would be an additional tax-free allowance for each person; initially set at £100,000, and rising up to £175,000 by 2020. This means there will be the potential for married couples (or civil partners) to pass on a £1million estate, free of inheritance tax. However, when examined closely it becomes clear that this ‘residence nil rate band’ benefit will only be available to those with direct descendants, who have an estate
(including a qualifying property) with a total value above the inheritance tax threshold. Indeed the headline of ‘£1million free of inheritance tax’ should be treated with skepticism, and is a change that is likely to lead to confusion and uncertainty. For example, if a property is sold during a person’s lifetime in order to pay for their care fees, many people will be questioning if the ‘residence nil rate band’ will still be available. Also, people with discretionary trusts in wills should check that these would still be suitable under this new system. If you have concerns about how these new rules will affect you or a family member, be sure to seek expert advice. For more information about how the multi-award winning team at Blacks Solicitors can guide you through changes in legislation visit www.lawblacks.com or call 0113 207 0000. n your search for the perfect gift this Christmas, why not allow a local independent business to guide you in the right direction? Edward James Jewellery takes pride of place on the corner of Sharrow Vale Road and Hickmott Road and has been selling an ever-changing collection of jewellery for the last 27 years. Set up by husband and wife Jayne and James Brown – design graduates who have worked in the trade since leaving Art College – this independent business is firmly established as one of the region’s most highly regarded jewellers. The Browns were joined 14 years ago by manager David Nieveen, himself a jewellery specialist of many years’ standing. Together they offer a wealth of experience, and it is this in-depth knowledge – along with a serious passion for their products – that keeps customers coming back to the shop time and time again. As specialists in diamond engagement rings, diamond-set jewellery, wedding and eternity rings in all precious metals using carefully selected stones for quality to give the visual ‘wow’ factor, Edward James offers a wide range of classic and contemporary styles in the newly refurbished window displays. With these modern, minimalist displays also comes a brand new website, designed and conceptualised by James. In keeping with the company’s design-led ethos, it offers another beautifully presented peek into the Edward James world. David explains: “People’s shopping habits have changed considerably in the last 27

years and the majority now go online to see what’s available. We wanted to create a website that reflected our company – the design, expertise and specialist skills that we have in-house – and reach out to new customers who perhaps don’t know who we are, what we do, and what we can offer them. We feel buying jewellery is an emotional experience; being able to try a piece on, handle it and appreciate the subtleties of design and how it makes you feel.” As well as unique items designed and created in-house by Edward James themselves, you’ll also find carefully chosen silver, gold and costume jewellery and watches from prestigious brands such as Citizen, Mondaine, Fred Bennett, Elements and Fiorelli. The company also has jewellery by exciting new designers that cannot be found anywhere else in the Sheffield area such as Jeanette Skanshage and Gill GallawayWhitehead. If you are looking for something particular that is not in stock, the staff at Edward James will do their very best to source the item from their global network of suppliers. “For many people, we are their first port of call when choosing an engagement ring or a special piece for Christmas,” says Jayne. “And, though they may look elsewhere – as we would expect them to when making such an important decision – they almost always come back to us for their final purchase.” Designer craftsman James also offers an increasingly popular bespoke service if you can’t find what you are

Old or inherited jewellery can also be remodelled into a modern design, or restored to its former beauty. Several pieces can even be incorporated into one stunning new piece. Queue For the Top… he largest golf resort operator in United Kingdom, QHotels recently celebrated the first anniversary of its acquisition of six former De Vere hotels and De Vere luxury lodges. And a visit to one such property, Mottram Hall in Cheshire, illustrates just why the company is such a success. The hotel creates an imposing impression from the moment you arrive at the 18th Century Hall via a long, sweeping tree-clad drive through to its high quality bedrooms, fine restaurants, golf course and spa. The quality of the course is one example of the many benefits of a unique golf membership scheme operated by QHotels – the QFairway club. The initiative is entirely flexible with up to 50 rounds of golf for a cost of only £375 per annum, with access to 11 impressive resorts operated by QHotels. The points-based membership gives golfers all the benefits of a full club membership – including the facility to hold a handicap and playing rights for club competitions – while offering discounts on food and drink, shop purchases, tuition and hotel bed-and-breakfast rates. More than 1000 new members have already signed up to the scheme, launched earlier this year, including hundreds of juniors. Membership of the QFairway club is so popular because it provides access to some of Britain’s top courses including Forest Pines in Lincolnshire (a favourite among Yorkshire golfers), Slaley Hall in Northumberland and Oulton Hall, here on our doorstep in Leeds. Mottram Hall is one such top, championship standard course, having hosted the 2013
T
European Seniors PGA Championship. The front nine is relatively flat and meanders through lush meadows and parkland but golfers should not be fooled: the back nine is harder with some daunting drives and carries as fairways bisect the densely wooded rough. The Mottram Hall golfing experience has recently been enhanced by a spectacular £1.5million refurbishment programme. The result is a modern but classical new clubhouse, encompassing a fine bar area and restaurant both offering panoramic views of the course. The new Halfway House could be a clubhouse in itself with a fully stocked bar, seating area and the provision of hot and cold snacks. Playing at a QHotels venue is particularly attractive for groups or golf societies in 2016, with prices being held at 2015 rates provided the booking is for 12 or more and made before the end of November this year. Prices, for new bookings only, at any of the 11 courses start at £79 per person for one
night’s dinner, bed-and-breakfast plus two rounds of golf. Two-night, three-round packages including dinner, bed-and-breakfast can be booked from £165 per person while discounts of up to 20% are available on drinks or groups of any size. Mottram Hall has many attractions other than the fine golf: it’s home to Britain’s first Alfresco Thermospace Spa; it houses a superb health club with great leisure facilities, while it is also a glorious wedding venue and the perfect setting to host a conference or event. The rooms have been impressively upgraded and the Carrington Grill serves wonderful food using Cheshire ingredients from local suppliers. The hotel offers a number of special breaks including residential Christmas and New Year ones. Details of these and the range of golf packages can be found at www.qhotels.co.uk or by calling 0845 2411320.

Steve in the saddle for riding charity Steve Basford (right) raised over £2,000 for Sheffield Group Riding for the Disabled and Children in Need in a sponsored fancy dress ride at Cowley Riding School. Sheffield Group Riding for the Disabled was set up with the aim of encouraging and broadening participation in sport. They provide riding lessons for disabled children and teenagers living in Sheffield and the surrounding area. Although they are part of the national Riding for the Disabled charity, they receive no financial assistance from them and rely on donations and grants to fund activities. It costs around £9,000 a year to run the lessons. Horse riding can help improve muscle tone, increase flexibility and co-ordination, allow independent movement, and encourage exercising and social interaction. If you would like to make a donation, cheques should be made payable to Sheffield Group Riding for the Disabled. For more information and contact details visit www.sheffieldrda.co.uk.

Vase sets new auction house record Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire broke house records when a glass vase by French Art Nouveau designer and botanist Emile Galle sold for £39,000. Despite its broken condition, the impressive glass vase (pictured) attracted international interest and bidding from telephones and online, before selling to a room buyer. Other highlights of the auction included an etching by St Ives artist Ben Nicholson, which sold for £4,400, a Clarice Cliff Applique Windmills tea set (again in very damaged condition) which made £4,700 and another painting by Mary Potter which sold for £3,600. Decorative Arts auctions are held three times a year at the Derbyshire auction house, the next is in February 2016. Please contact John Keightley at Hansons Auctioneers for more details or free valuations on 01283 733988.

SS Christmas
Walk in a winter wonderland From real trees to gifts and festive dinners, Ward’s Garden Centre is a unique and unusual one-stop Christmas shop which exceeds everyone’s expectations.
I
t’s the most wonderful time of the year… Christmas spirit is in full swing, festive songs are on loop in the shops and delicious mulled wine is warming the cockles of many a frozen shopper. Now that we’re fully immersed, the time for decorating our homes is upon us. Glittering tinsel and baubles always look lovely, but it’s the natural trimmings that really make the difference; scarlet poinsettia, pearly mistletoe and a good old real Christmas tree. Not only will they brighten up the house and create a real jovial feel, they’ll also fill the home with the traditional festive scents of Christmas time – there’s nothing quite like coming home to the smell of a real pine tree. Once again, Ward’s Nurseries and Garden Centre has embraced the festive season with open arms. The garden centre has been transformed into a winter wonderland of illuminations, decorations and gifts and this year there is a new village scene collection featuring animated musical and illuminated decorations with lots to choose from including a miniature ice rink with skating figurines, a carousel, a merry-go-round and cosy taverns. A whole host of Christmas plants and trees are also available. If you love the idea of an authentic Christmas tree but dread the annual needle shower, a Nordmann Fir could be what you’re looking for. Known for having excellent needle retention properties, as well as very attractive foliage, it gives you the best of both worlds. Whatever the size of your room, Ward’s has a Christmas tree to suit, with lots of varieties in sizes ranging from approximately four to nine feet tall, all at very reasonable prices. Director Sue Poulton says: “We’ve worked closely with our Christmas tree growers for many years and we know that the quality is always second to none. Our Christmas trees are probably the freshest in the area too as we always take deliveries as close to Christmas as we can, this way we can ensure that by the time

demand is high, the trees will still be freshly cut and won’t have been sitting in a warehouse for weeks, making them much more likely to last throughout the entire Christmas period.” Freshly cut trees will be available from week commencing 23 November and the team at Ward’s are on hand to make sure your Christmas tree gets home in one piece – whether potted or cut and whatever the size – the netting service will make even the biggest trees fit into the smallest spaces. Alternatively, the delivery team will be happy to do all the dirty work for you and drop your chosen tree off on your doorstep. As well as the large range of Christmas trees, Ward’s also offer a stunning collection of wreathes and garlands, as well as an array of flowering and berried Christmas plants. Although poinsettias are traditionally scarlet at Christmas, Ward’s also stock them in cream, pink and dark pink if you want to put a modern spin on your festive decorations. Cyclamen and orchids, available from Ward’s can also be used to transform your home this Christmas. It’s not just decorations that Ward’s do best; whether you’re looking to purchase something traditional or unique and quirky, Ward’s Garden Centre is brimming with hundreds of fantastic gift ideas for the whole family. With ranges of clothing, a huge selection of books for adults and children, as well as toys, you are guaranteed to find something to suit each of your loved ones. Once you’ve got gifts for everyone you can beautifully present them with Ward’s impressive gift wrap. Sue says: “We try to cater for all tastes, budgets and ages with our range of jewellery, soaps, furniture, socks and fabulous faux fur wraps – you name it, we’ve probably got it.” This year, Ward’s are once again offering food hampers that can be personalised to your tastes. Choose anything from an extensive selection of chutneys, jams, cakes, biscuits and chocolates for the perfect present, and a member of Ward’s staff will pack and wrap it all in an attractive gift box ready to present to the lucky recipient. With all that Ward’s has to offer, why not make a day of your visit? Father Christmas will be in his grotto from 1-4pm during weekends leading up to Christmas throughout December. Every child will receive a gift and the proceeds will be donated to local charities. The café is child friendly and offers a grand selection of meals and, new this year, there is a luxury festive afternoon tea. Decorations, plants, trees, gifts and festive foods are on your doorstep and all under one roof at Ward’s Nurseries and Garden Centre, allowing you to avoid the rush and make your entire Christmas shopping experience a pleasure. Menu One There is plenty of free parking and Ward’s is very disabled-friendly, with Starter lots of assistance on hand if required. Chef ’s homemade Scotch broth Smoked haddock fishcake Fan of melon
