LEAVING A LEGACY TO SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL WILL HELP A CHILD’S LIFE – IT REALLY IS A GIFT OF LIFE. heffield Children’s Hospital is one of four stand-alone specialist children’s hospitals in the UK and provides world-class care for children all over Yorkshire and beyond. The skill of staff and the courage of patients and their families helps to make it an incredible place – but at The Children’s Hospital Charity, we’ll never stop striving to make it better. There are so many ways in which you can support the charity; one of the most significant ways you can help is leaving a gift in your will or create a will with Irwin Mitchell who will offer a discount when you quote The Children’s Hospital Charity, as well as make an instant donation to the charity. For 17-year-old Ebony Taylor, an incredibly generous gift, left by Sheffield local Betty in her will, has made all the difference to her treatment. Ebony, from Doncaster, has been treated at the hospital for epilepsy since 2012 and needs regular scans to monitor the activity in her brain. She was the first patient to benefit from a fully digital intraoperative 3T MRI scanner, partially funded by a £845,273 donation made by Betty. When Betty passed away she wanted to remember the hospital – a cause she had
S
championed all her life – in her estate. Her staggering once in a lifetime gift means that patients like Ebony will benefit from the most up to date technology possible and can get better in an environment designed with them in mind. Every penny donated through a legacy really does make a difference. Legacies also help to fund up to £250,000 of research into the prevention and cure of childhood illnesses and disease every single year. One of these projects developed a pioneering screening programme which detects rare life-threatening diseases in babies. Thanks to a successful pilot study leg by Sheffield Children’s Hospital, all new-born babies in England will be screened for four additional rare but serious conditions. The early detection and treatment of these conditions helps to give children the best possible start in life. Leaving a legacy through your will could make a life-saving difference for the children in our care – it really is the gift of life. To find out how to make a legacy donation or how you can create a discounted will through our partners Irwin Mitchell, contact support@tchc.org.uk.

HEALTH
New year, new you START 2017 ON THE FRONT FOOT BY MAKING SOME POSITIVE CHANGES TO YOUR LIFESTYLE. RACHEL MARTIN HAS SOME TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU REACH YOUR GOALS. ow that the champagne corks have stopped popping, and the excesses of Christmas and new year are over, it’s the perfect time to take stock and cut back in order to lose a few unwanted pounds. With the new year comes a raft of resolutions and 2017 is set to bring with it some of the latest and most effective ways to lose weight. And while reaching a healthy weight can take commitment and willpower, there are some tried and tested approaches that should make the task easier. If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting nutrition and diet advice out there, you’re not alone. Here are some weight loss tips and trends to help you achieve your health and fitness goals.
N
“Since you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose a pound of fat, choosing classes that burn as many calories as possible is your best bet to shed the pounds.”

JOIN A GYM
For most people, the first step towards achieving their fitness goals is joining a gym. Every gym is different, and yours should be the perfect fit for your specific workout. It shouldn’t just be a room full of treadmills but a place in which you actually enjoy spending time. Well, as much as you can enjoy a place where you are continually huffing and puffing. Your gym should feel comfortable, inspiring and nurturing to your overall health. FITNESS CLASSES
Any fitness class is a good choice if you have trouble finding motivation to exercise. If you’re trying to lose weight, however, choosing the right class will make a big difference. Some classes are good for muscle definition and relaxation but don’t offer too much in terms of calorie burning. Since you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose a pound of fat, choosing classes that burn as many calories as possible is your best bet to shed the pounds. HYDRATION
Appetite and thirst are regulated through the same part of the brain, leading you to think
you’re hungry when you’re dehydrated. Beat the confusion by drinking a glass of water and waiting 15-20 minutes to see if your hunger vanishes. Not only is water the cure for unnecessary snacking but bonus benefits include clearer skin, improved digestion and liver support, allowing your body to better metabolise fat. HEALTHY EATING
Healthy eating is not about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically thin, or depriving yourself of the foods you love. Rather, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving your outlook, and stabilising your mood. To set yourself up for success, think about planning a healthy diet as a number of small, manageable steps – like adding a salad to your diet once a day – rather than one big drastic change. Ditch habits of weighing your food to the gram and crunching numbers throughout the day. The less you stress about eating, the better your chances of sticking with your eating plan and avoid making decisions that could set you back.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Skipping the gym every now and then allows you to get outside. Not only do studies claim people have more rigorous and longer workouts when they’re outside, but being around nature has positive psychological effects including increased self-esteem and lowered depression and fatigue.
applications to reduce fat and improve skin texture without ever going beneath the skin – and without the need to exercise. Eight sessions are usually required for ultimate results but this would be dependent on a full consultation to determine suitability. Treatments are available individually or as part of a more extensive fat-removal and body-contouring programme.
FITNESS APPS
“Not only do studies claim people have more rigorous and longer workouts when they’re outside, but being around nature has positive psychological effects.”
Unfortunately, apps alone won’t help you lose weight, but if you can’t afford a personal trainer, fancy gym membership, or even a simple fitness tracker, they can definitely help you stay on track. Calorie-counting and exercise-tracking fitness apps let you use a smartphone or tablet to record food and exercise, as well as set a net calorie consumption target or range for the day based on your height, weight, age, gender, and overall level of activity.

HYPNOSIS
A workout DVD or even a quick YouTube search to find indoor aerobic routines can pay off when you have limited space. Committing to a 20-minute blast at home is easier than promising yourself that you will get up early for the gym. When conventional weight-loss techniques don’t work, for some people, this might be the time to try an alternative weight-loss therapy.
Hypnosis is considered to be the resolving solution for people following the patterns of binge eating. Many have claimed it is the best supplement for weight loss, and it is a method used all over the world these days.
3D LIPO
Unlike traditional liposuction, 3D Lipo is entirely non-invasive, utilising various

There are different wraps available tailored at different needs, but it’s no miracle cure. The effects of body wraps are only temporary. Designed for living THERE’S A GROWING TREND FOR DECORATIVE ARTS AND HANSONS AUCTIONEERS ARE PERFECTLY PLACED, HOLDING THREE DEDICATED AUCTIONS EACH YEAR. any of us who watch TV programmes such as Bargain Hunt and Flog It may know that Brown furniture and Victoriana is less fashionable than it used to be, and, with austerity and minimalism taking over, one might ask, what is fashionable and saleable at auction in the current market? Traditional ‘antiques’ certainly have their place and value at auction, but their value isn’t always as high as we think, and often it is other items which cause a stir in the saleroom. Decorative Arts and Design is one area hitting a note with the buying public, covering design and fine art from the 1850s right through to the present day, including silver, jewellery, ceramics, glass, paintings, prints and furniture (amongst many other things). The key feature being that they were all designed by known artists and have an element of an iconic era, anything from Aesthetic Movement and Art Nouveau, to Art Deco and Modernism. Names such as Moorcroft, Clarice Cliff and Lalique, would all come under this heading of Decorative Arts, as well as Liberty, Troika and Whitefriars. On the furniture side, Ercol and G-Plan also have their place in this everpopular category of specialist auction. So, how did it all start? Design for designs sake was frowned upon in the second half of the 19th century by the socialist elite of which William Morris was part, and over

industrialisation and mass production of trinkets and objects with no real purpose – purely to feed a growing moneyed middle class – was rife. Morris and art critic, John Ruskin spoke out against this, and Morris’ famous quote: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful” describes the sentiment attached to the concept of Decorative Arts, which still exists amongst collectors in the field today. However, it is not only serious collectors attracted to the field; the appeal of objects designed for living and designed to be used, has made it popular with every generation of private collectors. Hansons Auctioneers hold three dedicated Decorative Arts and Design auctions a year – with consignments from across the country – selling everything from Arts and Crafts to Danish mid-20th century design – with international interest across the board. Modern British art, including prints from the 1950s and 60s, have also proved popular in recent auctions. It is often the case when Hansons travel to houses on free valuation visits that the items appraised are of relatively low value, and items people grew up with, or bought as new, are the items which sell for most at auction. Signed prints by LS Lowry, bought in the 1970s for £20, can easily sell for £2,000 today, and often hang on people’s walls unnoticed. Similarly, Ercol furniture, or 1960s
Danish furniture, is often far more valuable than 18th century mahogany or oak. Valuation days, held in Coal Aston twice a month, have uncovered some real gems of Decorative Art, from watercolours, including a watercolour by British 20th century artist Elizabeth Mary Watt (sold for £1,500), to Troika vases. Similarly, a rather unassuming glass studio vase, correctly identified as a rare Art Deco Monart Paisley Shawl vase, sold in a specialist Decorative Arts auction for £750. “Since we started the specialist auctions, more than two years ago, we have seen a huge interest in Decorative Arts from the private buying market, as well as traditional antique dealers and more typical auction goers,” says head of the Decorative Arts Department at Hansons, John Keightley. “Correctly catalogued and identified objects, placed into an auction where viewers can imagine living with items, creates an aspirational buying mentality – great for our vendors and the market. “Coal Aston is a fantastic area for finding Decorative Arts and the bi-monthly, free valuations have proved very successful, and we hope will continue to be so.” Valuation Days will be held at Coal Aston Village Hall on 10 and 24 January from 10am to 1pm. CHESTERFIELD
A £2.7million Sheffield City Region Regional Growth Fund grant has enabled infrastructure works to be brought forward
Waterside is go CHESTERFIELD WATERSIDE GETS THE GREEN LIGHT FOR CONSTRUCTION. t has been more than ten years in the making, but one of the largest regeneration projects in the UK was finally given the green light in December. Planning consent was granted for the heights and massing of buildings in phase one of Basin Square at Chesterfield Waterside. The granting of consent was a major milestone in the project, enabling the developers, Chesterfield-based Bolsterstone Plc, to now move forward with negotiations with potential occupiers and investors for the hotel, retail units, apartments, multistorey car park and offices that will be constructed in Basin Square. The mixed-use first phase of Basin Square, which is on the site of the former Trebor factory, is expected to cost £75million and developers claim it is of a scale and quality not previously seen in Chesterfield and will elevate the town’s profile. Peter Swallow, managing director of Bolsterstone, said: “This is a massively positive development for the town. Hundreds of jobs will be created not just in
I
the building process but in all the businesses that will occupy the buildings.” Bolsterstone Plc is working in conjunction with Arnold Laver Group and Chesterfield Borough Council to bring forward the Chesterfield Waterside scheme which was announced in 2005. With the exception of the creation of a new canal basin, which is central to the forthcoming Basin Square development, and the construction on 19 affordable homes that have been built on the site, an ensuing recession meant the project was largely put on hold until 2016. In September 2016, Chesterfield Waterside got the kick-start it needed when it was awarded a £2.7million Sheffield City Region Regional Growth Fund grant. The grant enabled the site enabling and infrastructure works to be brought forward. Local earthworks and landscaping contractor NT Killingley is currently on site undertaking the work, which is anticipated to be completed by March 2017. “Good progress has already been made on site with the preparatory groundworks, and we will be ready to commence construction as
soon as detailed planning consent can be granted for the individual buildings,” said Peter. Planning permission has also been granted to replace the road bridge over the River Rother serving the former Laver timber yard site which will facilitate access to The Park residential area of the project. The completion of the bridge and the acoustic bund (to reduce sound pollution) will pave the way for approximately 300 family homes to be delivered in The Park. The entire £340million Chesterfield Waterside scheme is being built across 16 hectares on the edge of the town centre and adjacent to the River Rother and Chesterfield Canal. As well as a hotel, offices, apartments, retail units and a multi-storey car park, once complete Chesterfield Waterside will comprise more than 1,000 homes. The ten-year vision is to make Waterside a vibrant, attractive, sustainable new community in the heart of Chesterfield. Peter concluded: “Once the project is fully underway, it will be one of the biggest regeneration projects in the country, and when complete, it will create a whole new area of the town.” Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk 27

Solid wooden furniture is made at Leonide’s own warehouse in Buxton
Paul has been in the building and interiors industry for over 15 years and started out as a marble sculptor. Growing up with a father who was also a sculptor by trade, in a house ‘like a museum’, marble work was not just a career choice for Paul, but a part of his everyday life. He soon went into the marble trade and from there, opened his very own showroom, Leonide Interiors, in September 2014. The showroom has a wide variety of samples and settings to wander around for inspiration, whilst their CAD design service with photo clarity will help you visualise your new space. The showroom is also about to undergo an extension and will reopen double the size by the end of February. So whether you are looking for something traditional, contemporary or a mix of both, there will be plenty more styles to suit you. And if you are looking for some solid wooden furniture, Leonide Interiors manufacture their own in their warehouse in Buxton. From made-to-last kitchen tables, to made-to-order staircases, everything is bespoke.
Showroom manager, Paul Webster, has 25 years’ experience and is joined by a similarly knowledgeable team. The business employs both an in-house fitting team and a number of contractors – all of whom are suitably skilled and fully-qualified. “All of our team are exceptionally good,” says director Paul. “You’re only as good as your fitters. A high-quality service and punctuality are important to us, but they are nice guys to be around too, which is important when they are spending so much time in your home. “We look after each customer from the word go. There’s no job – big or small – where we don’t go the extra mile and we always get fantastic feedback.” Drop into the showroom or call Leonide Interiors for a free consultation, find examples of brilliant jobs they have completed on their Facebook page @leonideinteriors or for more information visit www.leonideinteriors.co.uk. FLIPPING BRILLIANT!
HE’S A RECORD-BREAKER, A MULTIPLE WORLD CHAMPION AND A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN. JET-SKIER LEE STONE TALKS TO PHOEBE SEYMOUR
SPORT
Centre of attention: Lee being interviewed
op star, actor, professional footballer… We all have big dreams growing up, but only a handful of us actually have the talent and determination to follow through with them. Lee Stone is one of these people. Growing up in Chesterfield – without a lake in sight – the last thing you’d expect a five-year-old child to want to be is a professional jet-skier, but 20 years on, Lee is a Guinness World Record-breaker for the most consecutive backflips in a row (36 - in case you were wondering) and is an eight-time World Champion. So how did this unlikely lad first get the extreme sports bug? “I first tried jet-skiing when I was on holiday with my family in Spain,” he explains. “I was only five, so my dad drove and I sat at the front. I did the same sports as most kids, including football, but jet skiing was something different and I really enjoyed it.” However, it wasn’t until he was ten that he started taking the sport seriously. Then at the age of 12, Lee started training for the British Championships, which he went on to win, before winning the European Championships at 14. This success enabled him to gain sponsorship and spend time competing abroad. It wasn’t long before Lee was competing in the World Championships, and by 2010, he was at Lake Havasu City, Arizona, winning his fifth title for his superman backflip – a stunt which he was the first to successfully complete. Since then, he’s racked up another three world titles, bringing his total up to eight in a
P

row. The superman backflip was inspired by a motor cross stunt and Lee continues to channel this into new and even more innovative moves. His most recently developed stunt is the heel clicker backflip, where he takes his feet out of the jet ski – upside down and mid-air – before clicking them together. Needless to say, this impressed the judges at the 2014 World Championships. However, stunts such as these come at a cost, and Lee admits he has had his fair share of injuries - some leading to operations and screws being placed in his arm, shoulder and leg. This would send most people heading for dry land, but not Lee. “The fear of losing is greater than the fear of pain,” he says. “I get as scared as everyone else, but it’s just finding a way of blocking it out. You just have to train as and get as much guidance as possible, because after your mentor has gone, it’s all on you.” Which is why as well as training as Rother Valley Country Park as much as possible, you will also find Lee mentoring the next generation of jet-skiers. He runs training clinics for recreation and competitions. Usually ages 18 to 25 are a prime time to get into the sport professionally, but Lee will train anyone from kids as young as 10 to adults as old as 60. Lee has taught people in the UK, as well as in Saudi Arabia and Japan. Travel is part and parcel of jet-skiing and is another attraction for Lee. In 2011, he moved to Australia for two years, where he worked for SeaWorld and performed in front of up to 10,000 people per show. His most memorable moments also include performing for the King of Morocco. But of course, a knight is nothing without his trusty steed. Lee has his own business, Lee Stone Products in the unassuming village of Stanfree, which manufactures and sells jet ski parts all over the world. His products have been such a success that 40 per cent of professional competitors now opt for his brand, Revolver. Lee rides a custom-made Revolver himself, which won him his eighth World Champion title last year, whilst the rider who came second was also riding a Revolver. The company also sponsors a number of jet ski competitions and riders to help them reach their full potential.
I want to stay in this business for as long as possible, whether that’s designing and creating jet-skis from scratch, or pushing amateurs to make it as professionals.’ “This profession is about buying the right equipment, getting the right help and going from there. The rest is a matter of suck it and see. The sport is moving so fast and the equipment has already changed so much.” As we go into a new year, it seems the 25year-old has already achieved all his goals. There certainly aren’t many people who can say they are an eight-time world champion, with a successful business and a wealth of knowledge and understanding to teach others. So what are Lee Stone’s ambitions for the future? “I want to stay in this business for as long as possible, whether that’s designing and creating jet-skis from scratch, or pushing amateurs to make it as professionals. “My long-term goal is to win more world titles than anyone else. There is currently one other person who has won eight in a row, so at this year’s World Championships in October, I want to make it nine and break that record.” We would wish him luck, but if anyone has the skills and determination to achieve his dreams, our local star Lee does.

Safe in the knowledge DON’T GET CAUGHT OUT THIS WINTER – CHOOSE ONE OF THE MANY SERVICE PLANS AVAILABLE AT BLUEFLAME. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. s winter sets in, it is time to turn our attention to our boilers in preparation for the colder months. As the chilly winter evenings continue to get colder, it’s important to ensure your heating system is in working order, so you can escape to a haven of snugly warmth. Blueflame is a local Chesterfield-based gas service company that specialises in providing annual service plans for central heating systems. Established over 15 years ago, this professional family-run business has over 50 years’ combined experience in the industry. Heating and hot water are things that we rely on completely, but we don’t always realise this until something goes wrong. When it does, it’s incredibly frustrating – and often very expensive. Service plans are a way to spread the cost of these breakdowns through monthly payments. They help to ensure someone is always on hand to help if things do go wrong. With any boiler, the parts and labour charges that come with ad hoc repairs can be very costly. The advantage of a service plan is the peace of mind it provides – as payments
A
are made on a monthly basis you’ll have nothing to worry about, safe in the knowledge that there’ll be someone on hand to fix your system when it fails. Something that often discourages us from agreeing contracts is the small print – but there are no such worries with Blueflame. “Our terms and conditions are nine points on a single side of A4 in 12 point font,” says company director John Beevers. “You won’t have to trawl through a book of details!” Blueflame offers several different levels of cover, but the basic packages are silver, which covers boilers, or gold, which also covers the full central heating system. Compared to the larger national firms, prices are very competitive.
Blueflame specialise in service plans, but that’s by no means all they do. They offer a complete range of gas and plumbing services, including boiler swaps, upgrades and power flushing to mention just a few. Of course, when it comes to plumbing and gas businesses, the most important thing isn’t the services on offer but how trustworthy and reliable the company is. Fortunately, that’s exactly what Blueflame are – they’re Gas Safe registered, and members of Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Trader Scheme. What’s even more impressive is Blueflame’s fabulous reputation. They’ve got a database full of satisfied customers – many of whom return to this friendly company again and again. Blueflame are on hand to help all year round, so contact them today to be safe in the knowledge that you’ve already planned a cosy winter. The Matterhorn
TOUR DE FORCE
CHRIS WILSON STAYS ON THE MOVE BY TRAIN, BUS AND BOAT TO SEE THE SIGHTS IN SWITZERLAND. hatever happened to the Grand Tour? Back in the 17th century, wealthy English gentlemen would spend several months travelling across Europe, accruing knowledge and purchasing beautiful antiques and carpets to furnish their country estates back home. Nowadays, even if budgets are not an issue, we tend to settle for a single location. Unpack, head for the pool, and return home a fortnight later, several shades darker but no wiser. It’s a habit that has not gone unnoticed among our continental cousins. As I checked in to one hotel for a single night’s stay on a whistlestop tour of Switzerland, my host was vexed about the holiday habits of the archetypal Brit abroad. “Why do you stay in one place? You should see more of the country you are staying in,” I was told. I didn’t need the lecture; she was preaching to the converted. Have suitcase on wheels will travel…that’s my motto. Mind you, it does make it a lot easier when the country you are visiting is Switzerland, where the trains, buses and boats always run on time and itineraries can be planned with total confidence. Just to make the travel easier, you can buy

a Swiss Pass for unlimited travel on eight consecutive days on railways, boats and most alpine postbuses, covering a network of 16,000km. The Swiss Pass also allows a half price reduction on all privately owned funicular and mountain railways and free entrance to 450 museums. It really is the ultimate ticket to ride. On arrival at Zurich airport, it was a short stroll to the adjoining railway station and half an hour by train to the sleepy town of Kusnacht and the Romantik Seehotel Sonne. Dating back to 1641, the picturesque location on Lake Zurich was mesmerising and the hotel’s private bathing area was irresistible on a scorching July day. The water was crystal clear – very refreshing and with nothing but the occasional steam boat gliding by to make ripples on the water – and a quick dip was Grimsel Hospiz
the perfect way to unwind. Dinner on the terrace, watching the sun set and the lights from small towns across the bay start to twinkle, added to my sense of wellbeing. Food and wine, I realised, was going to be a major plus point. Throughout the tour I ate incredibly well on outstanding local produce including home-smoked salmon, veal, river fish and berries. The wine, meanwhile, was a revelation. It is produced in all 26 Cantons, although not in sufficient volume that you are likely to find it imported to your local supermarket. So, make the most of it: many patriotic bars and restaurants stock only Swiss wines, and that is no hardship when the choice includes creamy sparkling Cremands, flinty Rieslings and smooth rich Merlots. After that first night, I awakened to a ridiculously perfect chocolate-box view of mountains, lake, blue skies and fluffy clouds. So I checked out with some sadness, but I had an itinerary to follow and a series of trains, boats and buses to catch. The next few days passed in a blur of activity with fresh highlights around every corner. Whatever our mode of transport, the views were amazing and if some, even for
TRAVEL
first time visitor, were eerily familiar, it might have been because some of Switzerland’s most picturesque scenery is much loved by TV and film location scouts. So, at various times, we found ourselves in the same spot as some of fiction’s most memorable action scenes involving legendary heroes and villains. On one train journey through the Beernese Oberland region, we found ourselves looking up at the Reichenbach Falls, where Sherlock Holmes and his arch rival Professor Moriarty fought and perished in a dramatic death plunge onto the rocks below… until a disapproving public demanded that logic be defied and Holmes was resurrected in a later story. Perhaps the most spectacular hotel on our tour was the Grimsel Hospiz, perched at 2000m in the middle of bleakly beautiful rocky landscape on the turquoise waters of an artificial lake which is built on top of a hydro-electric dam. We travelled by train and bus, then the hotel’s mini bus took us through the dizzying steep mountain roads. It came as no surprise to learn that James Bond and Blofeld had battled it out on these very same twisting roads in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The hotel is accessible only by cable car in winter and is so remote that skiing is too dangerous. People come to revel in the luxurious hotel and watch the scenery. This being high summer, we simply drove on a road blasted through the rock, arriving at our mountain retreat not quite able to believe our eyes. Don’t miss those views, but also don’t miss the wine cellar of which the owners are rightly proud. A more sedate mode of arrival, though just as exciting in its own way, is the steam boat to Lucerne, which is worth a walking tour for its hidden alleys, teeming town squares and beautifully preserved 13th century city walls. Summer in Switzerland means there are, of course, mountains to climb, and it was appropriate that we ended our truncated version of the Grand Tour in Zermatt, the town that started it all. The Matterhorn dominates the view here and there are wonderful summer walks for all levels of fitness.

The Reichenback Falls
However, if you simply want to take in the view, there is a train up to Gornergat at an altitude of 3,089m. We were staying at the Monte Rosa hotel, which was the mountaineering base of Edward Whymper, the man who made the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn. Legend has it that Queen Victoria disapproved of such dangerous leisure pursuits and pronounced that it must stop. To anyone with a remotely rebellious taste for adventure this was just the incentive needed – and hardy hikers have been coming to Zermatt to tackle the Matterhorn and the less challenging lower ranges ever since. Zermatt is a quirky town. Local farmers still drive their goats down the main street every day, but the glitzy bars and restaurants are testament to the fact that this is one of Switzerland’s most fashionable resorts, winter and summer. But while the town may be buzzing the one thing you won’t hear is the roar of the internal combustion engine. Cars are banned, although you can always find an electric buggy at the station to transport you and your luggage to the hotel. And that seems a suitably strange final stop on this truncated version of the Grand Tour.

The evening was a huge success with guests raising £6,000 for the cause, thanks to donations from everyone attending and some very generous individuals bidding in a silent auction, which was hosted by actor Joe Duttine (aka Tim Metcalfe from Coronation Street). Food lovers were able to enjoy cuisine cooked by Bora’s Andy Cummings in the SieMatic kitchen as well as a buffet supplied by Forge Bakehouse, cakes by Those Finishing Touches, cheeses from Porter Brook Deli and seasonal drinks from Starmoreboss. With jazz musicians, cooking demonstrations, spicy mulled wine and plenty of fizz, there was a real party atmosphere. Harriet Coulthard from My Fathers Heart said: “Everyone that contributed was fantastic and I’m touched by all the effort and donations everybody made. We managed to raise £6,000 for the Sheffield NSPCC so we’re absolutely thrilled with the outcome and the responses from our guests.” 36 Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk

MOTORING
Just can’t get enough If for some reason the normal Vanquish is just not ‘enough car’ for you, then we have some good news, because Aston Martin has released the S variant to its flagship super GT car. With the second generation Vanquish’s evolution to S specification, careful attention has been paid to the engine, chassis and aerodynamics to create a machine honed to deliver more intense thrills and even more scintillating performance. Visually, the Vanquish S can be distinguished with the addition of a new carbonfibre front splitter and an aggressive rear diffuser and newly designed quad exhaust outlets. Under the hood, the glorious 6.0-litre naturally-aspirated motor remains but this time with 592hp, up from 565hp. Prices start from £199,950. Available in both coupe and Volante form.
WHAT’S HITTING THE ROADS IN 2017? THERE’LL BE MORE THAN ENOUGH FOR YOU, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH.
SPEED DEMON Dubbed the supercar killer, the Exige Sport 380 is the fastest Exige that has ever been created. Following on from the already ballistic Exige Sport 350 from 2015, the 380 boasts a reduced weight to 1,066kg, increased power to 375 hp from it’s 3.5-litre supercharged V6 motor, and enhancing aerodynamics to produce 140hg of downforce at its 178mph top speed. With a power-to-weight ratio of 352 hp per tonne, the Exige Sport 380 certainly doesn’t hang around. 0-60mph takes just 3.5 seconds which beats many a supercars and the chassis is regarded as one of the finest in the business. Priced at £67,900, it comes with an exposed six speed manual transmission or there’s a sixspeed automatic as an option.
Estate of mind At last, the Renault family has finally been completed with the addition of the all-new Megane Sports Tourer – the estate edition of the already brilliant Renault Megane hatchback. As with all estates, they need to have a big boot in order to warrant their name, and thankfully the Megane does just that, boasting 521 litres with the rear seats in place, extending to 1,504 litres with the seats folded flat. There will be six trim levels to choose from, giving customers a choice between luxurious or sporty at the top of the range. There are four engines available from launch, two petrol engines and two diesel units with the most potent being a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol producing 205hp.
Worth the weight Welcome everybody to the all-new Mazda CX-5. It’s a completely redesigned edition of the compact SUV that kicked-off a generation of critically acclaimed cars featuring the company’s efficient lightweight SKYACTIV Technology and award-winning KODO – Soul of Motion designs. The all-new CX-5 comes with the full range of SKYACTIV Technology including two petrol engines – the SKYACTIV-G 2.0 and SKYACTIV-G 2.5 – and the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine. First unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto show back in November, the CX-5 will go on sale in the UK some time in the spring/ summer of 2017 prior to the first releases in Japan in February. JANUARY SALES
How to shop the January EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BAGGING A BARGAIN OR TWO IN THE NEW YEAR SHOPPING FRENZY, WRITES STEPHANIE BURNS or bargain hunters, January is the very best time of year. Walking into your favourite shop to see so many discounts and special offers can be even more exciting than Christmas Day. But before you dive in head first, take a moment consider some important advice, which could save you even more money. Follow our tips and you’ll never find yourself with a wardrobe full of unworn clothes or a garage full of unused gadgets again.
F
Set your priorities Before you set off, or go online, make a no-negotiation list to ensure you don’t end up with piles of things you don’t need or want, just for the sake of the bargain. If you’re really organised you’ll already know the key items you’re hoping to bag but, if not, jot down your must-haves and put your energy into getting these first. This will also keep you focused when there are a thousand other things to distract you.
Stock up on new-season trends Fashion retailers often reduce the trendiest items the most, along with anything they didn’t get rid of in the summer sales. This is often where the best buys can be had. Do your homework on this summer’s key looks before you head out and you could save a fortune on pieces that will still be on-trend in months to come.
Time it right Go either super early (as in online on Christmas Day) or at the very last minute. If there’s something you’ve had your eye on all year that is likely to be reduced, get in there as soon as you can before it’s snapped up. Alternatively, if you’re less bothered about the specifics – for example, if you’d like a new TV but don’t mind which one – leaving it until the last possible opportunity will probably get you a bigger discount as prices are slashed further towards the end of January. 40 Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk
JANUARY SALES
Check the return policy January discounts tap into the most basic element of sales – urgency. The fear of missing out by not buying then and there is overwhelming but often leads to impulsive buying. The key here is to utilise the store’s return’s policy. Many shops allow you to return sales stock, even if it’s within fewer days than usual, so you can grab as much as you like and then try it all on at home when you’re more relaxed and can decide which items you definitely want. Just be sure to choose wisely and then return within the allotted time – yes, even if you like everything.
Do your research The beauty of the internet is that, before you even step foot outside your front door, you can go online to check the best prices. Not only will you be able to identify which shops are offering the best deals, but if you note down how much you can find something for online, you’ll also make sure you don’t pay over the odds in store.
Set a budget
Invest wisely
It’s easy to get giddy at the sight of a 50-per-cent-off ticket, but if it’s more than you were intending to spend, you won’t feel the full benefit. Stick to your budget.
Higher quality items last far longer so, although you’re initially spending more, the cost-per-wear should even out in time. And really, what’s Christmas money for anyway?
Deck next year’s halls Unless you’re so super trendy that only the current season’s Christmas decorations will do, now is the time to buy anything festive-themed. From crackers to napkins, cards to baubles, shops will be desperate to get rid of whatever they didn’t sell before Christmas so there should be huge reductions.
Start your 2017 Christmas shopping now! There is significant risk with this, so don’t say we didn’t warn you. And don’t even think about second-guessing what your kids might want next Christmas. But for the more reliable gifts of a tie and socks for your dad or slippers for your grandparents, this is the perfect opportunity to save on the classics.

The Gate (left) takes visitors on a 20-minute time travel through 300 years of Berlin history using old film clips, soundscapes from the city’s streets and news footage shown on HD screens
Capital gains BERLIN, A CITY WHERE A FRACTURED PAST MEETS AN EXCITING FUTURE, IS AN INTRIGUING WEEKEND BREAK DESTINATION FOR MOLLY McGREEVY. n Berlin, lunch comes with panoramic views of the Brandenburg Gate, TV tower, rolling acres of Tiergarten Park and the historical hub of Museum Island. From its vantage point on top of one of the most important buildings in the city, the Käfer Dachgarten serves Berlin classics alongside delicious vegan and vegetarian options; and is the perfect starting point for a weekend break in Berlin. After an aerial view, the best way to see the city is on two wheels, with a Berliner leading the way. With a population so passionate about remembering the past, whilst forging a forward-thinking future, choosing a tour without a native at the helm would be a waste. Praised as one of Europe’s most bikefriendly cities, cyclists in Berlin have their own lane on the pavement, special traffic lights and a much higher respect from drivers compared to what we see in the UK. Berliners however, are not fans of the helmet, and it seems only children and cowards decide to protect their head when powering the pedals. Our tour of the Berlin Wall with Berlin on Bike saw us peddling, albeit with a wobble at times, around the city with our tour guide, Sascha, who was in his teens when the wall came down. He told us about his own family and their stories of prison time and smuggling lovers across the divide, a reminder that for Berliners the wall has an ongoing impact on their lives, and is not just an attraction for tourists. Our ride took us to the Berlin Wall Memorial, home to the only remaining section of both sides of the wall, including the death strip and watchtower. The true horror of the wall is not revealed until you climb the stairs to the memorial museum’s

viewing platform. From there you can see the terrifying measures taken to keep the city apart, from the rounded tops of the two walls to the watchtower spotlights. To lighten the mood Sascha told some of his favourite wall-crossing success stories, including one of the three Bethke brothers, who each successfully crossed the wall into the West in an impressive show of oneupmanship. Their escapes involved air mattresses, bows and arrows and ziplines, finalising in the last remaining brother being picked up by his siblings in a small plane, which they had painted in Soviet colours and simply flown over into the East. By the time they were uncovered as fakes, all three brothers were safely landed in the West. Ravenous from hours of biking we stopped for a traditional Berlin snack of currywurst from the unassuming Konnopke Imbiss stall, which still stands in the same spot from which the family sold their first sausage 86

/ years ago. Local lore has it that the Konnopke family were the first to bring currywurst to Berlin more than 50 years ago. For those who prefer their feet to the saddle, the city is easy to navigate on foot, the terrain is flat and efficient transport links make hopping on and off at popular tourist spots a breeze. A good starting point for a walking tour is The Gate, which is just 50m from Berlin’s most famous landmark, the Brandenburg Gate. Emotive and enthralling, The Gate takes visitors on a 20-minute time travel through 300 years of Berlin history using old film clips, soundscapes from the city’s streets and news footage shown on 71 square metres of HD screens using a 36-channel sound system. From the Brandenburg Gate exploring the central district of Mitte, which is home to many of Berlin’s most popular tourist attractions, is a breeze. Its central location means the Mitte district is also a great place to stay in Berlin, with plenty of hotels and hostels; there’s something
to suit all budgets. The Weinmeister Hotel is just a couple of minutes from the famous Alexanderplatz square, but it’s not only the hotel’s central location that makes it so appealing, but it is also the amazing design and artwork throughout. The hotel’s stairwell was taken over one evening by The Paint Club, a globally unique international network of illustrators, graphic designers, comic and street artists, and now each floor acts as its own art gallery, all visible from the hotel’s glass lift. The rooms are also decked out in artwork by artists from Berlin and beyond, so guests can soak up the vision of the city from the moment they wake until they rest their heads after a day soaking up the history of the city. In Berlin, creativity and culture is never far away. Steeped in turbulent history, Germany’s capital has had to continually adapt, change and reinvent its image to overcome destructive, divisive events. Today the city is a hotspot for young, progressive, creatives, who learn from the city’s divided and fractured past to create a united, liberal future.

ENTERTAINING
Chris Walker and his partner Sharron invite you for dinner… black tie is optional!
How to throw the perfect dinner party IN HIS DAY JOB HE PLAYS A SOAP OPERA COP, BUT OFF-SCREEN HE LOVES TO PLAY THE ATTENTIVE HOST. ACTOR AND CELEBRITY MASTERCHEF CONTESTANT CHRIS WALKER REVEALS HIS TOP TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DINNER PARTY TO MOLLY McGREEVY
46 Southside | www.southsidemagazine.co.uk
ou may know Chris Walker as Rob Hollins, a policeman in BBC daytime soap Doctors, but when he isn’t donning his uniform in front of the cameras, Chris loves to entertain at home, throwing dinner parties for his friends and family. Chris’s love for food led him to compete in Celebrity Masterchef, where he reached the semi-finals, creating wonderful dishes for judges Greg Wallace and John Torode, but his passion for cooking began when he left the family home in Yorkshire and moved to London. “Cooking wasn’t that important to me until I left home, then I started making standard things like a Bolognese or a chilli and I became fascinated,” said Chris. Fuelled by his new found love for food, Chris started collecting cookbooks and now has a couple of hundred at home, covering every cuisine imaginable. He would often prepare meals for fellow actors whilst touring the UK, and this soon grew into hosting dinner parties.
Y
Chris’s prowess in the kitchen didn’t go unnoticed, and a friend at The Regent Hotel, Doncaster, asked him to host gourmet nights on a Friday, each one themed round a different cuisine. “I cooked nine-course gourmet meals for up to 44 people, I wanted to prove to myself by charging people money. When you invite people round to your house they’re not going to tell you the food is rubbish, because that would be rude. But people will when they have to pay for it, I charged quite a lot of money and people kept coming back again and again, so that was great.” For Chris, food is about bringing people together around the table. He said: “These days things have changed, there’s so much food you can microwave and so many takeaways available. When I was a lad people sat round the table and shared family times, and that is what is important to me, to create that ambience.” With so much entertaining experience, Chris shared his tips and tricks for throwing a wonderful dinner party.
ENTERTAINING
Being a good host
On Chris’s menu
“The thing about dinner parties is that the host has to be there, if the host is in the kitchen all the time, it ruins the evening for them and their guests. A host should get a chance to sit round the table and talk, because that’s what food is all about. That’s one of the most important things about food, it should bring people together. It’s all about preparation at a dinner party, that’s the real secret. You need a starter that is made up, a main course that can be left, and a pre-made dessert, whether that be hot or cold. I recommend using your slow cooker, make something two days before and it’ll improve in the fridge. On the day itself, you’re presenting food rather than cooking it – that’s the key to it all. You don’t want to be serving fillet steak to eight people when you have to cook it to order, that’s restaurant stuff. That doesn’t make for a conducive dinner party.”
ON ARRIVAL “You want some nibbles out already, something that people can get stuck into straight away like olives, especially if you’re inviting people who haven’t met before. Make sure there’s a drink waiting for them, either a cocktail or a glass of bubbles.” TO START “A smoked mackerel pate works very well. You can buy the mackerel already smoked and mix it through with some crème fraiche and some capers. Stir through some sultanas soaked with wine and serve that with some salad, some melba toast, butter and you’re done.” MAIN “Try ox cheek, it’s just amazing, it’s superb. Cook it for six to eight hours in the slow cooker and it’ll be the best beef you’ve ever tasted. I do it a day or two before, put a bottle of wine in there, put carrots in huge and whole and leave them to cook. I would brown the beef first, cut it into big pieces, and then add red wine, beef stock and huge vegetables, also add onions and thicken it later using either cornflour or a mixture of butter and plain flour in a paste.”
Where to source ingredients “Use your local market. Of course we all use supermarkets, but if you get a good relationship with your butcher and your fishmonger they’ll help you, they’ll hang meat for you longer than a supermarket will, they’ll give you special cuts, they’ll look after you.”
Drinks “Always team drinks and wine. The first thing is not to be scared of wine, it’s there to be enjoyed. No one should be snobbish about wine, in this day and age you can get some great wines for a really good price. You can get a lovely bottle of wine for five or six quid, but if you’re having a dinner party and want to make it a bit special, pay a bit more and it’s so much better. Matching wine to food is great fun. You want to start with a white wine or a sparkling wine, or you can do cocktails, then move onto red, then port and brandy. A good idea for dinner parties is to choose a cocktail and make it in a punchbowl, at the moment I’m loving pornstar martinis. Make it up in a nice big bowl, don’t put ice in it, instead fill empty spirit bottles ¾ full with water and freeze them. That keeps the cocktail cold and doesn’t dilute it. Get a ladle and everyone can serve themselves.”
Music and entertainment “I would always have a little bit of
CHEESEBOARD “Cheese goes on the table next. By bringing out some cheese and biscuits you’re giving yourself chance to nip back into the kitchen and prepare dessert, it buys you time.” DESSERT “Apple and blackberry crumble with custard is a good hot option, or prepare a cold dessert the day before.”
background music, like my food I like everything. I love classical, I love jazz, I love heavy rock, you want to be putting on something a bit background. If you’re serving at Christmas, obviously get some carols and some Bublé on, or a bit of Nat King Cole. It depends how you’re theming your dinner party, during the World Cup and other football tournaments I choose a theme based on a team playing. For example you might do Brazilian food and choose your music accordingly.”
Good food, good wine and good company – the ingredients for a successful dinner party
For a more informal dinner party “There are lots of great ideas to make a dinner party less formal. One thing you can do is get a leg of lamb and cook it until it falls apart and then shred that on the table. Then have lots of wraps and different ingredients so people can make their own wraps; you can do that with beef and pork as well. If you’re going to do South East Asian or Chinese food get all the ingredients in bowls in front of everyone with part-cooked veg and meat, then serve a lovely homemade stock in teapots on the table so guests can pour their own red hot stock into their bowl and everything becomes warm again, usually served with noodles. You could do the same with Mexican. It’s nice to put big bowls of food on the table and let people help themselves, that breaks the ice as well.”
One final tip? “Go and read up on what you’re going to do. Don’t be afraid of food, don’t ever apologise for your food in front of your guests and be confident. Don’t poison anyone though, you don’t want your guests being ill.”

CHESTERFIELD CHAMPIONS
WE NEED TO KEEP MOMENTUM GOING, SAYS PETER SWALLOW, CHAIR OF DESTINATION CHESTERFIELD.
here is no doubt that 2017 will be a tumultuous year politically, with Brexit being top of the agenda. Noone knows what is around the corner and how our break from the European Union will look or indeed affect us – internationally, nationally and locally. Chesterfield has benefitted from much EU funding over the years, recent examples include assisting major developments like Markham Vale and Chesterfield Waterside to finally get off the ground. It is important that we keep the momentum of the town’s major new developments going in 2017 and beyond. We have the opportunity to enhance Chesterfield’s position on the international commercial map, however this must be a collective effort, by everyone including councillors, politicians, businesses and, most importantly, the community. Everyone has a role to play in promoting Chesterfield and attracting investors. Whether holidaying at home or abroad tell people how great our town is. When you live and work in the same town it’s all too easy to forget about the positives. There’s a saying ‘when you can’t
T
see the wood for the trees,’ and I think many of us are guilty of this. When you visit the town centre take time to see the variety of shops that we have, our market, the market hall and the historic Shambles shopping area. When compared to other towns and cities, Chesterfield has excellent shop occupancy rates, so much so that the town centre was identified as an ideal place for retail investors in a recent national property report. Ask yourself this – if we, the people who live and work here, run our town down on social media and in conversations, will investors want to come to Chesterfield, spend their money and create more jobs and opportunity? Look at what has been achieved in 2016 alone – Chesterfield’s new University of Derby campus was unveiled at St Helena’s, work has started on Chesterfield Waterside, plans for Northern Gateway were approved, Great Bear announced it was to build a second distribution unit at Markham Vale creating 800 jobs, and it was revealed that the town’s railway station will be a spur on the HS2 route. Let’s make a collective New Year’s resolution to be positive about our town and celebrate everything that we have achieved and what 2017 will bring. I am particularly excited by the Chesterfield Waterside, Peak Resort, Northern Gateway and Elder Way developments and, of course, the canal restoration, all of which will make headway in 2017. There is so much potential in our town. Together we can make Chesterfield great.
