W
ith a huge choice of flooring options to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as a friendly, professional service that has earned them a solid reputation, it’s little wonder that Layers Flooring customers are lining up to sing the company’s praises. Happy to share their first-class experience are David and Barbara Arnold of Dronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers to supply and fit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen and dining room. Mr and Mrs Arnold said: “We first chose Layers eight years ago when they fitted our kitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went to them because they are a local firm and so we thought we would give them a try. They were in the Civic Centre back then and we used to pass them while out shopping. “Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in the dining room too, we used Layers again. The dining room used to be carpeted but now it is more easily accessible for David, who uses a wheeled walker, as it is all one level and totally flat. “When we visited the shop to enquire about the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved things around in the shop to make it more easily accessible for him. “We had something quite specific in mind and were shown lots of samples. The choice was great and they explained about the different types of vinyl, helping us to reach the right decision. After we had chosen, they said it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient time for us. “In the meantime, a man came round to
measure the room and he brought samples so we could double check we were completely happy with our choice. “Then when the fitter arrived a few days later we recognised each other as he was the one who had fitted our kitchen flooring eight years ago. He placed plywood down in the dining room – as he had done previously with the kitchen – before laying the flooring so it was nice and smooth. The vinyl is also very thick so it looks just like real wooden floorboards. “We were so impressed with the fitter’s workmanship; he was brilliant. We still can’t get our head around how he fitted the flooring as it was all in one piece but it’s incredibly neat – especially around the radiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back into
place with no trouble. All in under two hours. “He was so impressed with his handiwork he even asked us if he could take a photograph for his portfolio! “If anybody asks us where to get new flooring, we would definitely recommend Layers. And in the future when we need new carpets we’ll certainly be popping up there.” Layers Flooring 55 Highfield Road, Hilltop Dronfield S18 1UW Tel: 01246 292969 Branch also at: 46 Sandygate Road, Crosspool Sheffield S10 5RY Tel: 0114 266 9888 Roll end centre at: 10 Hicks Street, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8BL Tel: 0114 278 1514

If you don’t manage to blow all your pension on a fast car or a trip to Vegas! How about passing it on to your children and grandchildren free of inheritance tax? Much has been made of the new flexibility coming to the owners of Personal Pensions in April, however “do you know you will now be able to pass your pension pot on to future generations completely free of Inheritance Tax?” Explains Phil Smith Director and co-owner at Hamnett Wealth Management. Never before has it been more important for people to review their pension arrangements and take advice from a firm of qualified INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISERS. From April owners of personal pensions who are over 55 will have the ability to draw money out of their pension as they wish, the old limits on the amounts that could be taken will be removed. You can take a quarter of your entire pension pot tax free, either in one go or in phases, with the remainder being taxed as income in the year it is taken. However not all pension schemes will offer the full flexibility the new legislation provides. If you have a pension that you have held for a number of years, it’s likely that changes will need to be made to that pension before the full flexibility available can be accessed. The new legislation provides pension holders with much more choice than before, however there are pitfalls and unnecessary tax that may be incurred if things are not done properly. The Chancellor of the Exchequer will be very happy if you simply cash in your whole pension in one go. But why would you? This is likely to mean you
incur a large tax bill and the money has been taken out of one of the most tax efficient investment vehicles available. It may be far more beneficial to withdraw money as and when you need it, thus keeping any taxation to a minimum and retaining unused funds in a tax efficient investment. Whatever your individual needs you must take professional Independent financial advice, it could end up saving you thousands of pounds. Another major benefit of the new legislation is the changes on how personal pensions will be taxed on death. If the owner of a personal pension dies before they reach age 75, then their unused pension fund can be passed on to whoever they nominate free of Inheritance Tax. It doesn’t stop there because the nominated beneficiaries can then withdraw from the fund as and when they wish free of all tax. Death of a personal pension owner post age 75 again allows the fund to be passed on free of Inheritance Tax, to whoever the pension holder nominates. The fund can be accessed by the beneficiaries as and when they wish and will be taxed as income in their hands. The pension fund can then be passed on to the next generation on the death of the first nominee and on and on through the years. For some people whose estates will be subject to Inheritance
Tax it may be beneficial to stop spending money from their pensions now and spend other assets to help preserve the amount that can be handed down to loved ones on death. Again not all pensions will offer the full benefits available under the new legislation, so you need to ensure your pension fund is held in the right type of pension plan. In summary the new legislation offers people a great deal more options and some major benefits. The new rules as always with pensions are complicated, if you make the wrong decision it could be very costly. Make sure you speak to us before taking any action. Hamnett Wealth Management offer a pension review service. We are INDEPENDENT which means we work for you to advise on the best solutions for you from the whole of the marketplace. SS Helpline
A lifeline for those in need A move to new premises will allow the Chesterfield branch of Samaritans to deliver their services much easier. Words: Hannah Pearson
F
or anyone who is in despair or going through a tough time, having someone to talk to can make all the difference. Last year, almost 18,000 pleas for help made their way to a small building in Rose Hill, Chesterfield – home to the local branch of Samaritans. Samaritans is a confidential, 24-hour listening service that offers a calm, caring voice at the other end of the phone. A team of volunteers support anybody who is in despair, which includes suicidal thoughts, relationship breakdowns, financial trouble, mental health issues, drugs and alcohol, and homelessness. Samaritans is a lifeline for people who are struggling to access mental health services or for those who require help at night, when most support services are closed. However, Samaritans is not an advice line – volunteers simply listen and give people someone to talk to during a time of need. The service is completely anonymous and volunteers don’t know where calls originate. Although support is predominantly offered over their 24-hour phone line, you can also contact Samaritans via text message or email. The Chesterfield office also offers face-to-face support between 10am-10pm, providing a volunteer is available. Samaritans could not function without its dedicated team of volunteers, which is why they are always on the look-out for new recruits. Listening volunteer Lin Rumsey has
SOUTHSIDE 14
worked at Samaritans for five years. She witnesses first hand the life-changing work they do – but she has also seen the number of volunteers fall over the years. “Volunteers do not need any particular experience or qualifications to work at Samaritans – you just need to be empathetic, non-judgemental and willing to listen,” says Lin. “You never know what will be on the other end of the phone, so an open mind and a real desire to make a difference goes a long way.” Volunteering is a commitment and Samaritans requires members to work 18 hours a month on a rota of flexible shifts, which includes some overnight work. The Chesterfield branch currently has 35 regular volunteers. New volunteers receive six weeks of free training and they are shadowed by a mentor when they start work. “We have a fantastic team of volunteers, aged 18-79, from all walks of life,” says Lin. “We each bring something different with our unique experiences and knowledge and we all support one another.” As well as working as a listening volunteer, Lin is also involved in fundraising for the charity. It costs £30,000 a year to run the Chesterfield office, which has been open since 1971. And now is an exciting time for the Chesterfield team as they will soon be moving to new premises. The new building is much bigger and will make delivering their services much easier.
“The new office is all on one level, which means we can finally offer disabled access to our clients and volunteers,” says Lin. “There is also a car park and rooms for onsite training. At the moment we have to rent premises for meetings or training, so when everything is in one place it will make the whole thing much better and will save us money.” Samaritans is always in need of new listening volunteers and people to help at the shop on West Bars and with outreach work at Sudbury Prison. The next information and recruitment evening will take place on Thursday 19 March at 7.15pm at The Parish Centre, Stonegravels, 91 Sheffield Road, Chesterfield, S41 7JH. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Tracey on 07769 299501. If you require support from Samaritans you can visit them at 2 Rose Hill, Chesterfield, S40 1LW or phone 08457 909090. From March, their office will be based at 121 Saltergate, Chesterfield, S40 1NH. Visit www.samaritans.org for more information.

So many ways to volunteer Could you touch another person’s life when it really matters? Either by discussing their feelings with them directly, by phone, email, text, letter or even face to face? Or perhaps you could support our branch by helping with the administration, fundraising or marketing? Our confidential, 24-hour listening service responds to five million contacts a year. We also reach out to our local community by visiting soup kitchens, colleges, universities, prisons and workplaces. With so much happening, we’re constantly looking for new people to strengthen our teams. We usually ask volunteers to give three to four hours a week, including some overnight time. Out-of-pocket expenses will be paid.

SS Mother’s Day
Mum’s the word
All over the world, people are preparing to show their mothers how much they care… but how do other countries mark Mothering Sunday? Hannah Pearson finds out.
M
other’s Day is coming – Sunday 15 March if you need reminding – which means it’s time to start thinking about what gift will surprise Mum and what you can do to show her how much you care. The tradition of dedicating a day to celebrating how fantastic our mums are dates back centuries – but did you know that England was the first country in the world to dedicate a day for mothers way back in the 1600s? Mother’s Day celebrations in the UK take place on the fourth Sunday of the Christian fasting period of Lent. Since the Lent days are not fixed, the date changes every year. Mother’s Day came to be celebrated in the UK in the 17th century. It was known as Mothering Sunday and can be traced back to medieval times when children from poor families were sent to work as domestic servants and apprentices in rich households. Once a year during Lent, these children were given a day off to visit their home church and worship the Virgin Mary. After returning to the church of their home town, they would then see their mothers, usually for the first time in months. It was customary to present their mum with flowers they had picked along the way or make a rich almond cake, known as Mothering Cake or Simnel Cake. The holiday even used to be known as Refreshment Sunday because the strict Lent fasting rules were put aside for the day. Today, the original meaning of Mothering Sunday has been lost and Mother’s Day in the UK is similar to that of other countries, where children usually give gifts of flowers and chocolates. The tradition of Mothering Sunday stopped with the advent of the industrial revolution when work and life patterns changed and the religious connection has long died out. However, the day is still celebrated in March to coincide with Lent, unlike the majority of other countries which celebrate it in May. As one of spring’s biggest gifting events, last year Mother’s Day was estimated to be worth over £400million to the gifts and greetings cards industry in the UK. But how does the rest of the world celebrate mothers on this special day? Happy Mother's Day. Feliz DÍa de las Madres. Furaha ya Mama Siku. It doesn't matter how you say it, the sentiment is the same.
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
SPAIN – Sunday 3 May Things are done a little differently in Spain, where DÍa de las Madres is always celebrated on the first Sunday in May. On this day, Spaniards pay tribute not only to their own mothers but also to the Virgin Mary (pictured) and the day includes religious celebrations across the country. THE USA – Sunday 10 May Much the same as the UK, Mother’s Day in the United States is a highly commercial holiday and traditions generally include treats like breakfast in bed, flowers, cards or going out for a meal. Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May and became a national holiday in 1914. AUSTRALIA – Sunday 10 May In Australia it is tradition to wear a carnation (right) on Mother’s Day – a coloured carnation signifies that a person’s mother is alive while a white carnation is used to honour a deceased mum. The holiday stretches beyond immediate family though, with Australian children giving gifts to their aunts, grandmothers and other women who care for them. INDIA – Sunday 10 May The concept of celebrating Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May is relatively new in India. The holiday has grown in popularity in the last ten years and is now commercialised to a big extent in cities such as Delhi. Hindus in India also celebrate the goddess Durga, or Divine Mother, during a ten-day festival called Durga Puja in October. PERU – Sunday 10 May A commercialised Mother’s Day is celebrated in Peru on the second Sunday in May. But much of Peru's indigenous Andean population also celebrates the gifts of Mother Earth, or Pachamama, in early August. Pachamama is an ancient mythological goddess who is revered as the bringer of fertility. Her special worship day is called Martes de Challa. MEXICO – Sunday 10 May Mother’s Day in Mexico is celebrated on the fixed date of 10 May, unlike most countries where the date changes every year. According to custom, sons and daughters spend time at home with their mothers the evening before Mother’s Day. The day is then celebrated with great enthusiasm as churches organise a special mass, an orchestra plays Las Mañanitas and the traditional morning meal of tamales and atole is distributed to all local mothers. GERMANY – Sunday 10 May Muttertag takes place on the second Sunday of May – unless it falls on Pentecost, in which case it moves to the first Sunday of the month. During World War II, the holiday took on political significance as the day to acknowledge women for producing children. Medals were awarded in gold, silver or bronze based upon how many children were in a household. FRANCE – Sunday 31 May In France, Fête des Mères is reserved for the last Sunday in May – although it occurs in early June if Pentecost is the same day. It didn't become an official day of celebration until 1950, but was originally declared a holiday by Napoleon. A family meal is the norm and traditionally the mother is presented with a floral cake. THAILAND – Wednesday 12 August Mother's Day in Thailand is celebrated on the birthday of Queen Sirikit of Thailand (left), as she is regarded as mother to all Thai people. The holiday was first celebrated in 1976 and is observed as a national holiday. Father's Day is celebrated on the King's birthday – 5 December.

If you’re looking to spruce up the outside of your house, ProPave is the company to call. ProPave’s experienced team of three is led by owner Paul, who deals with each job from start to finish. “We also do all of our own work so you won’t have to juggle different contractors coming to your home,” says Paul. They begin by meeting with clients to discuss ideas and then get to work on the design. Though many people have a good idea of what they want and Paul is more than happy to be directed by his clients, ProPave are also well versed in guiding those who are unsure. ProPave specialise in all aspects of hard landscaping, including natural stone block paving, granite stone sets and natural sandstone flags including English York stone

and Indian sandstone paving. They can also do work on new lawns, returfs, garden maintenance, concreting, fencing and brickwork, among other things. Most recently, they have added another impressive string to their bow in the form of artificial grass, the low maintenance, attractive alternative to a traditional lawn. ProPave supplies quality products and service in all projects. As a result, they were one of the original invitees to Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Traders scheme, and are approved by major paving suppliers Plasmor and Natural Paving Products. They have a large portfolio of more than 1,500 completed driveways and patios and are council-listed for kerb drops with Derbyshire Highways, Bassetlaw Council and Sheffield City Council. On average, ProPave completes 60 driveways each year and have experience in paving both private residencies and commercial properties, from small patios to large driveways. They pride themselves on their value-formoney service. “What makes us stand out is the quality our of products and service for the price you pay and that we don’t pass work on to different people,” says Paul. “We have a very positive response from
customers and tend to gain a lot of work through word of mouth. Last year, we completed a young man’s patio after we’d been recommended to him by his parents whose driveway we did ten years ago." SS Interview
Looking to pastures new With a long-term plan to make farming his full-time job, Charlie Village is well on his way to fulfilling his dream thanks to a hobby with a difference, writes Stephanie Burns.
T
wenty-three-year-old Charlie Village has been an agricultural fencing contractor and log supplier since leaving school at the age of 16. After working for a local company, he set up his own business and now successfully runs Charlie Village Fencing. Oh, and did we mention that he also farms 250 sheep in his spare time? That’s right, this young entrepreneur who, although raised in the idyllic Derbyshire countryside does not hail from a farming family, took it upon himself to begin what he describes as ‘just a part-time job’ shortly after leaving school. “We used to have chickens when I was a child and I guess I’ve just moved a bit further up the livestock chain,” he says nonchalantly as we chat over his kitchen table in the rustic Barlow farmhouse that has been his home since birth. After raising two orphan lambs for slaughter when he was 14, he quickly grew accustomed to the farming way of life. Aged 16, he invested in 30 acres of rented and owned land and 40 ewes, first lambing them the following spring. Seven years later, he has 70 acres of land and significantly more sheep. This foray into farming didn’t come as a surprise to Charlie’s mum, Claire. “My mum always thought I’d be a farmer when I was little,” says Charlie. “Growing up in the middle of the countryside, I guess I liked what I saw and wanted to get involved. I did go to agricultural college for a bit but I left because I felt I could learn more on the job – I’m still learning now and always will I think.” Although his family don’t help out too much with the farming, his dad – an engineer – relishes the opportunity to assist Charlie with the machinery that he designs and builds from scratch. I’m very impressed with a huge piece of kit that Charlie points out in the yard
SOUTHSIDE 30
where some of his sheep are kept, and I wonder where this industrious spirit will lead. Charlie answers by explaining his longterm plan – to make sheep farming his fulltime job. He currently sells the majority of his lambs through Bakewell market, with some frozen packets also sold straight to the consumer, and he aims to continue pushing the entire business plan forward in the future. Though he assures me there’s no such thing as a typical day or week – a hugely appealing part of the lifestyle, I’m sure – he does have a regular morning routine of rising early to feed the ewes and their newborn lambs, which are housed inside. Usually the rest of the flock are on what’s known as ‘winter grazing’ and they helpfully nibble away at excess grass like nature’s lawnmowers. But in snowy winters such as the one we’ve just experienced, a lack of grass has meant also having to feed the rest of them, too.
I timed my visit perfectly to see the newborn lambs that have been bred especially for Easter. It’s actually against nature’s way to lamb this early and the majority of the flock will give birth in spring – but the 30 or so frolicking lambs I met seemed perfectly content, despite the icy conditions outside their cosy barn. Though not politically motivated, Charlie does like to encourage support for his fellow British farmers. “It is good to buy British meat and I guess I’d get a better price for my lambs if we only ate them seasonally but it doesn’t really affect me directly that some people don’t buy British,” he says in his typically relaxed manner. While he doesn’t get emotionally attached to his lambs, he does appreciate the beauty of bringing new life into the world and this is one of his favourite parts of the job. “If I was just business-minded about the sheep, I probably wouldn’t have them,” he admits. “But the worst part is when you get a phone call to say your sheep have escaped. It can be any time of day and you end up chasing them around the countryside. Luckily it doesn’t happen that often.” Charlie is also prepared for sleepless nights during lambing season, when he regularly stays up until the early hours of the morning to care for a ewe that’s giving birth. He’ll even visit again at 3am and then, after just a few hours sleep, be back at the barn before dawn to check on his flock. Not quite the part-time job he describes, then. “It does affect my social life a bit but I’m self employed so I can be flexible with my working hours,” he explains. Charlie will certainly have his hands full over the next few weeks as the spring brings with it a swathe of new lambs. But he’ll also have his eyes peeled for a farm of his own to rent – and, with this, his dream of becoming a full-time farmer will be one step closer to reality.

Where love comes en-suite! With wide open spaces to play in and piped music in the luxury kennels, your pet is sure to feel pampered during a stay at the Calagran Four Paws Hotel.
I
t takes a great deal of determination to take on a failing business and not only turn it around but also make it a resounding success. In the last year, that’s exactly what Calagran Four Paws’ new owners have achieved. Transforming the deteriorating quarantine business into a thriving pet hotel and successful quarantine service may have taken hard work and more than £30,000 of investment but, for pet lovers Julie and Maureen Adams, it was a labour of love. They are now incredibly proud to offer an exemplary ‘home away from home’ for dogs and cats. “We are a very different offering in the market,” explained Julie. “We have the security of kennelling with the activities, care and attention of a home boarding facility – and lots of extras too. “We provide a high-end service and great facilities – from the luxury accommodation to the high staff-to-dog ratio. While we’re not the cheapest option, we have tried to keep the cost accessible in relation to the level of quality.” Size is a key indicator of this excellence as they far surpass the minimum kennel size requirements. As well as lots of space indoors, Calagran’s shortest runs are 17ft long and the largest is 30ft. So, even when the dogs are not out for one of their regular walks, they are able to enjoy good exercise in a nice environment. And, as the kennels are not side by side, even the most nervous dogs can enjoy their stay. As a quarantine provider, Calagran is legally required to operate a higher standard of service than regular kennels, including

inspections every 12 weeks, high security including CCTV and foolproof fencing. In addition, their own high standards ensure pets are treated to a wonderful experience so their time away from home is more than just clean and comfortable – it’s a luxurious holiday. ‘Love and hugs ensuite’ is how Julie and Maureen describe it, with music piped into the cosy, heated kennels, oodles of affection and a treat each night before bed. And once the pampered pooches venture outside, things get even better. “Not only do we have some of the largest indoor kennels and outdoor runs in the country, we also have a secure two acre off-leash paddock so dogs can basically run around a huge play park to their heart’s content,” said Julie. This facility is also hired out to individuals and groups and is especially useful to those affected by the local authority’s new offleash rules. All are welcome to contact Calagran if they would like to use the space. In addition to Julie and Maureen, there are two full time staff – Kelly Goodwin and
Georgina Parsons – who are qualified to the highest level of animal care. Adding further to the diverse range of services, there is even a professional groomer – Gemma Baron of Paws Galore – onsite. They are also proud to work with two rescue charities – Nottingham and Yorkshire Boxer Rescue and ZeptheDep Rottweiler Rescue – rehoming dogs that would otherwise have been euthanized. “We work almost entirely with local suppliers and at every opportunity we try to operate ethically and accessibly,” said Julie. “There’s an exciting extension planned for later this year, and we’re looking forward to further expanding a service that is already really quite special.” Calagran Four Paws Hotel and Quarantine Deepsick Lane, Arkwright Town, Chesterfield, S44 5DN Tel: 01246 211281 Email: contact@cfourpawshotel.co.uk www.cfourpawshotel.co.uk www.calagranquarantinekennels.com

SS In Brief
Star named to help boys remember their dad The children of an Ashgate Hospicecare patient received a star named after their dad for what would have been his 40th birthday. Dean Morgan was diagnosed with cancer and was cared for by Ashgate Hospicecare in 2014. After his death, his wife Caroline Morgan set up a tribute fund which raised more than £24,000 for the hospice. As a thank-you gift and in recognition of the significant amount raised, Ashgate Hospicecare named a star after Dean. Caroline and Dean’s children, Maxi, four, and Luca, seven, opened the star gift on the special day. Luca said: “The star is so special to me because it's daddy's star. It makes me think of him and I feel good that we have raised lots of money for Ashgate who looked after daddy.” To find out more information on setting up your own tribute fund, please call Sue Mason on 01246 567250.

National Lottery Awards totalling £20,000 have facilitated the employment of Sheffield-based Ares Landscape Architects to create the design, and develop all the tender specification documentation. All that’s needed now is the money to build it and, as well as holding fundraising activities, the group is also asking for donations. To donate to the cause, visit localgiving.com/heartforhathersage. For more information about the scheme, visit heartforhathersage.org.uk.

guaranteed bright blue skies and perfect Mediterranean Sea. This is the ideal time for sunbathing, swimming, diving and boat trips. Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing and exploring, when the weather is often beautiful and the temperature comfortable. When it comes to sightseeing, a tour of the city of Valetta is a must. Don’t miss the vast 16th century bastion walls at City Gate. Here, the city of the Knights of Malta meets 21st-century Valletta as Shard architect Renzo Piano has remodelled the gateway and, just inside, built Malta’s first purpose-built parliament. The Knights of Malta’s baroque Auberge de Castille, guarded by cannons, leads to the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Perched high on Valletta’s bastion walls, the gardens offer panoramic views over the Grand Harbour and across the water to Fort St Angelo and the knights’ first capital in Malta. St John’s Co-Cathedral is plain on the outside, but within is a dazzling array of baroque gold, marble and paint, as well as two world famous Caravaggio paintings. Further afield but still easily tackled as a half-day trip, you can pick up a bus or taxi to Mnajdra and Hagar Qim prehistoric temples, some of the oldest stone buildings in the world. Close to the temples is a swimming spot popular with locals, Ghar Lapsi, a great place for a dip in Malta’s clear blue waters. Another ‘must’ visit is Mdina, Malta’s first capital and still a small medieval-style citadel city, full of historic buildings. Evening is a lovely time to wander here. The crowds have gone and the labyrinth of tiny alleys is quiet and atmospheric. If all that sightseeing makes you weary, head back to the Fortina Spa Resort for a cocktail and dinner. Whatever the reason for your visit, it is the ultimate destination. For more information go to www.fortinasparesort.com Tel: 0800 917 3001

SS Chesterfield Champions
It’s time to celebrate the success of our thriving businesses, says Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield.
I
t’s that time of year again; time to celebrate and look back on everything that Chesterfield has achieved. All too often, we hear about the good news in isolation and it can be overshadowed by the bad, which means it can be forgotten in the melee. That’s why Destination Chesterfield’s annual Celebrate event is so important. This will be our third Celebrate Chesterfield event and takes place on Wednesday 25 March at the Winding Wheel. Although last year was standing room only, the stream of good news delivered by the Destination Chesterfield team left us all uplifted! This year, Celebrate will be no different. We’ve made a point of building on last year’s success and striving to be even better in 2015. In June, we’ll again be welcoming the hugely successful Retail Awards, and the Food and Drink Awards will take place in October. We’ll also be celebrating our thriving manufacturing sector with Made in
SOUTHSIDE 50
Chesterfield in November. This year, it will be running over two weeks and will bring even more young people, teachers and businesses together. It’s important to me that the young people who live here know that there is a future for them, and marketing Chesterfield and its successful business sectors is crucial to this. We have a number of thriving industries and there are huge employment opportunities in all of them. The manufacturing sector in particular is telling us they want apprentices now! The hospitality industry is also set to boom. In the same week, it was not only announced that Chesterfield was home to one of the top five hotels in the UK – Casa – but also that the outskirts of the town were to be the location for the £400million Peak Development.
Whether you’re a resident, investor, business or visitor, there are exciting times ahead for Chesterfield. However, we must not forget about the past and present. So much has been achieved since we launched Destination Chesterfield in 2011 and I, for one, am looking forward to sharing the town’s numerous successes at Celebrate. You too can share in the success. The event is free to attend; you simply need to register at www.chesterfield.co.uk/celebrate.
