First class choice WESTBOURNE SCHOOL’S OUTSTANDING EDUCATION IS MORE ACCESSIBLE THAN YOU THINK. estbourne School has been the first choice for many parents throughout Derbyshire and Sheffield for many years... but if you haven’t been watching closely you might be in for a pleasant surprise. Westbourne is the only independent co-ed school in Sheffield that caters for pupils aged three to 16. With its small class sizes (on average 14 pupils) and a friendly, family environment where first class learning can take place – Westbourne offers the key elements parents expect when they are investing in their child’s education. Students from all over the region are welcome, and many pupils commute daily from Chesterfield and Derbyshire using convenient bus and train links, whether they be operated by the school, private firms or parents. There is no entrance exam at Westbourne – children of all abilities are welcome and are accepted on their own merit. Exam success rates remain outstanding – 2016’s Year 11 achieved a fantastic set of GCSE results, with many successful alumni going on to top sixth form colleges and gaining places at Oxbridge. Westbourne hosts a popular annual scholarship examination day where both internal and external Year 6 children sit exams for the opportunity to receive a scholarship-discounted place in Westbourne’s Year 7 class. This January saw a record number of external applicants from around the region eager to experience the Westbourne way of life and learning. Sport plays a big part at Westbourne – the ethos of the sports department is ‘participation for all and enjoyment by all’. Westbourne is proud to be inclusive yet still retains a competitive edge and achieves this by offering not just A team, but B and C team fixtures. Fixtures are arranged with schools around the region, so Westbourne children can socialise with children from around Sheffield and Derbyshire from a young age, forming friendships at primary

school that can grow and develop into senior education. Music and drama is also key and children can be seen performing at a whole range of iconic Sheffield venues from The Leadmill to the Sheffield Cathedral. Pupils have had huge success performing Oliver, Annie, The Wizard of Oz and Grease, and preparations for March 2017’s performance of Bugsy Malone are already underway. In pre-school children are taught French, music, drama and PE by specialist subject teachers and the phonics and numeracy lessons are personalised to meet each child’s abilities. Places are in high demand, and often fill up quickly as parents want to integrate their children into the Westbourne way of life as early as possible. For more information about enrolling your child at Westbourne School, contact reception on 0114 266 0374 or visit the school’s open day on 8 October between 10am and noon, when current pupils will be giving tours and prospective parents will get the chance to meet staff, parents and governors.

Keep the cold at bay
inter is coming, and, with it, plunging temperatures and shorter days that make you want to curl up and relax, warm and cosy by the fire. As the coldness looms and you prepare to pump the heat, it's important to protect your home from potential damage. Here are our top tips to make for an easier transition into the cold and help you stay warm, safe and energyconscious this winter.
W
Bleed the radiators Are your radiators colder at the top than they are at the bottom? This is because systems can occasionally get air in them, stopping the heat from circulating properly. Bleeding the radiator releases the air, allowing it to run more efficiently.
Service your boiler A poorly maintained boiler wastes energy and costs more, and it also runs the risk of leaking carbon monoxide. Either get your boiler serviced before winter or change your old model for a condensing unit.

SIMPLE TIPS TO HELP YOU GET YOUR HOME READY FOR THE WINTER. BY RACHEL MARTIN
HOMES
Insulation About a quarter of the heat in your house is lost through the roof, so having good loft and wall cavity insulation could keep the house warm with less energy used. Typically, you can save at least £120 per year on your energy bills by having insulation installed, according to the Energy Saving Trust. If you’re worried about keeping the costs down, it might be worth looking into the grants and schemes provided by the government that subsidise insulation installation.
No entry for draughts Those chilly winter breezes are wily things, and they’ll try everything they can to slip through the nooks and crannies of your home. Check the edges of your doors and windows for draughts, and seal these gaps with self-adhesive draught strips or a draught excluder.
Keep the heating on low Turning the heating off while you're out could cause your pipes to freeze. To avoid this, keep the central heating on low when you leave the house, and open all internal doors. You can also avoid frozen pipes and tanks by keeping the hatch to your attic ajar.
Check your home insurance
Keep your pipes warm Burst pipes are common during winter due to rapid freezing and thawing, potentially causing massive damage. The best way to stop this from happening is to keep your pipes warm with their own foam cardigan (lagging) which will reduce the heat lost and insulate the pipes to stop them from freezing.
Guttering As summer draws to a close, the leaves will start falling, and gutters and drainpipes will fill with loose foliage. Once the blockage becomes too much, water will start to back up and leak into the roof and down the walls of the house. Make sure your gutters are free from dirt to minimise water blockage.
Winter is a popular time for making home insurance claims, with maintenance problems cropping up for many at this time for year. Hopefully you won’t need to make a claim, but just in case you do, check your home insurance policy is up to date. If you are ever in doubt about how to look after your home during the winter months, particularly when it comes to your heating, contact a specialist.
Prepare for winter storms Don't let a blizzard take you by surprise. Always have a fully stocked emergency kit at hand and store at least three days’ worth of supplies for everyone in your household.
‘About a quarter of the heat in your house is lost through the roof, so having good loft and wall cavity insulation could keep the house warm with less energy used. Typically, you can save at least £120 per year on your energy bills by having insulation installed.’ Inspect the loft Check for signs of damp, particularly in areas where the roof slope changes. Darker patches, water staining and white streaks of powdery residue could indicate that rainwater has been entering the roof space.
Check outdoor lights Make sure outside lights are working. Lowenergy lightbulbs will mean they don’t cost much to leave on when it’s dark outside
Fireplace or wood stove maintenance If you rely on wood to stay warm, or just love the feel of a real fire, now is a good time to clean out last year’s ashes, and stock up on new wood for the winter. Have the chimney cleaned once a year as well. Southside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 33

Progress on the Waterside
A* GCSE success for Bakewell 13-year-olds Two Year 8 pupils from S.Anselm’s School have achieved A* in their Latin GCSEs after taking them three years early. Shea John and Toby de la Billiere sat the exams in June, with Shea achieving 100 per cent in one of his papers. Peter Phillips, headteacher, said: “These two boys worked incredibly hard and their efforts and dedication were rewarded. I am delighted both by their work and by the outstanding teaching that they received in order to attain these grades.”
Work has begun on the next phase of the £320million Chesterfield Waterside Scheme. Chesterfield based earthworks and landscaping contractor NT Killingley Ltd are completing the first phase of works, which involves preparing the site for building work, the initial work is expected to take three months. The enabling works will prepare the site for construction of a hotel, retail units, apartments, a multi-storey car park and offices next year. You can keep up-to-date with progress on the Chesterfield Waterside development at www.chesterfieldwaterside.com.

EDUCATION
The hard work begins... THE START OF YEAR 13 BRINGS THE CHALLENGE OF A-LEVELS AND UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS. OLIVIA DALEY, 17, WHO SPENT PART OF HER SUMMER HOLIDAYS DOING WORK EXPERIENCE AT RMC MEDIA, REFLECTS ON THE CHALLENGES SHE AND HER FELLOW UPPER SIXTH STUDENTS FACE. efore beginning any school year there is always the uncertainty of what it will hold, but never was that question so at the forefront of my mind than before beginning sixth form. Now, having completed my first year and awaiting the beginning of the next, the question still persists and it seems more crucial than ever. It is difficult to put into words the feelings that come with knowing that all your current decisions will have an impact on your future. It is certainly anxiety-inducing, to say the least. From your exam efforts to the work you do beyond school hours, there is the continual pressure to work hard and do well. Burnout is certainly a common feeling amongst students before they enter the summer holidays, all too eager to have respite to recover from the emotionally draining year. The years of sixth form are like no other: it is a 24/7 occupation, with school work and contemplation of the future even pervading my summer holidays. As I anxiously wait for my AS level results, the beginning of the UCAS application process and ‘summer homework’ unfortunately keep me occupied. With my school setting the deadline for university applications for November, there is mounting pressure over making my decisions for the future: if I want to go to uni, what degree would I like to study and what career path would I be interested in pursuing? Such responsibility is daunting for every student, but even more so when you don’t know what you want, as is the case for myself. Although many possibilities float around in my mind, not being sure that you are making the right decision certainly adds to the stress. After all, the worst situation would be applying for a course or university you are not sure you want to take or attend, but only realising you don’t once it is too late. This, along with the increasingly competitive nature of the application process, makes year 13 both a difficult and pivotal year. The need to ‘stand out’ and sell yourself as a person who universities should be desperate to want on their course through

your personal statement forces a thorough evaluation of how your personality and all your interests can be used to make others view you favourably in a way that you never considered before. It certainly invites a selfexamination of whether you’re good enough, especially in relation to your peers. But, of course, none of this matters if you don’t meet the entry requirements for the course you want to take, causing tension and unease to accompany your studies and exam efforts in year 13. But this pressure is certainly felt in year 12 too, perhaps more so on my year than those who came before us, following the introduction of new changes to exam specifications as of 2015. Most AS levels no longer count towards your A level grade, meaning that exams which you do at the end of year 12 will have to be conducted again the following year, meaning all your work in year 12 must be relearned in preparation for year 13 exams and thus increasing the intensity of your workload in this final and critical year. Hopefully this gives you some idea of the woes faced by today’s generation of students. Although I have so far painted the school life of a sixth form student and year 13 in general in quite a pessimistic and unfavourable way, that is only one side of the story. There are certainly benefits to sixth form: with the increased workload comes a new-found independence that in lower years you don’t quite have. From the responsibility being placed on you to manage your studies and success to being free to wear your own clothes and finally shed yourself of your hideous school uniform, I know I have enjoyed this greater degree of freedom. Besides, approaching year 13 may bring with it many worries and pressures, but it also comes with the anticipation that you are coming close to the end of your school life and moving into a new chapter. Knowing I have my whole life ahead of me brings a mix of emotions, from a feeling of fear of the unknown to ultimately a feeling of optimism, but I am hopeful that the future will be promising.
“It is difficult to put into words the feelings that come with knowing that all your current decisions will have an impact on your future.”

MOTORING
Small SUV The Q2, Audi’s smallest SUV to date, is now available to order priced from £22,380. With the newest examples arriving in November, these examples are available with either a 114hp 1.6-litre diesel or a 148hp 1.4litre-petrol with the option of manual or automatic transmissions. Later in the year, a 114hp three-cylinder 1.0-litre TFSI petrol will be available from £20,230 as well as a 148hp 2.0-litre diesel. In mid-2017 we’ll see a four-wheel drive 2.0litre petrol being offered too. The Q2 will come in SE, Sport or S Line trims. Standard items includes Audi smartphone interface, Bluetooth, MMI radio plus with MMI controller and progressive steering. Features on other trims include LED headlamp and rear lights, front sports seats, cruise control and dynamic sweeping rear indicators.
IF YOU’RE AFTER SOMETHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY, THIS MONTH’S MOTORING OFFERINGS FROM JORDAN CUTFORTH COULD BE JUST THE TICKET.
Something different Classic looks Following the announcement of the forthcoming Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato back in June, Aston Martin has now revealed the Volante version. Or to put it another way – the convertible. Zagato is an Italian coachbuilding firm and they’ve collaborated with Aston Martin to design exquisite-looking cars for nearly 60 years, starting with the DB4 GT Zagato race car in 1960. As with the coupe, the convertible comes with a 6.0-litre V12 naturally aspirated engine producing 592hp, which is good for a top speed of 200mph, and can achieve the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.7 seconds. The only difference between the coupe and the Volante is the Volante doesn’t come with Zagato’s infamous double-bubble roof. But I’m sure you’ll agree, this is one fine-looking machine.
Faster Focus RS Ford has announced that the Ford Performance by Mountune engine upgrade, which has been available on the Ford Performance fleet for a while now, is now available for the all-new Focus RS. For those who are unsure to what the Mountune engine upgrade is, it’s a power-boosting upgrade to the engine which does not affect the car’s warranty. The upgrade will cost £899, and for that you get a power increase of 25hp and a 30lb ft more torque over the standard RS, equating to overall power figures of 370hp and 376lb ft of torque. This drops the 062mph time from 4.7 seconds to 4.5. This means the Focus RS is now faster than a Porsche 911 Carrera with a manual transmission! Absolutely mad. 48 Southside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
Finding yourself wanting to stand out from the crowd? Well, there’s great news for you. It’s called the SsangYong Tivoli XLV, and what’s different here is that this car is the first ever SUV-estate. It shares the same platform as the regular Tivoli SUV but the body has been extended by 238mm from the C-pillar, giving this XLV variant a load capacity of 720 cubic litres of space. It comes well-equipped, featuring the likes of a seven-inch high-resolution touch screen, USB/AUX port, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, Tom-Tom navigation, rear view camera, parking sensors and cruise control. Only available with a 1.6-litre diesel, it comes in either two or fourwheel drive flavours with a sixspeed manual or six-speed automatic gearbox. On sale now from £18,250.

CHESTERFIELD CHAMPIONS
CHESTERFIELD IS A TOWN OF GROWTH AND OPPORTUNITY, SAYS PETER SWALLOW, CHAIR OF DESTINATION CHESTERFIELD.
hile summer may be an opportunity to slow down and take a break, that definitely hasn’t been the case in Chesterfield. We have kept our foot to the floor since the start of the year. It is this consistent drive and ambition from business and the borough council that is ensuring that Chesterfield moves forward and is a town of opportunity for everyone. Young people in particular are benefiting from the forward-thinking nature of the businesses based here. At the end of August there were more than 200 apprenticeship vacancies across the borough with companies ready and waiting for new school leavers to step forward and fill them. Six of those vacancies alone are with NT Killingley, the local company which has been appointed to undertake the site enabling works at Chesterfield Waterside. And while there’s currently only a handful of people employed on the site, it’s important to remember that Chesterfield Waterside will eventually provide around 300 jobs on the first phase of the Basin Square area alone. Just up the road from Chesterfield Waterside, the Northern Gateway development on the donut car park will also
W
bring more opportunity to Chesterfield. I am delighted that Chesterfield Borough Council’s plans include a new Enterprise Hub for start-ups and small and mediumsized business. Further afield, there are 700 more jobs in the pipeline at Markham Vale and plans have just been approved for the site’s largest building yet, which is expected to commence construction later this year. It is fantastic for the town that there are jobs being created. However, it is important that we also have the infrastructure to support companies and their employees; Chesterfield ticks this box as well. We now boast our own University of Derby campus, a brilliant college, apprentice training providers and some excellent schools. In fact, some of the best schools in the county for A Level and GCSE results are right here in Chesterfield – well done St Mary’s Catholic High School, Brookfield Community School and Dronfield Henry Fanshawe. The town is also in the unique geographical position of being able to take advantage of both the D2N2 and Sheffield City Region Growth Hub, which deliver finance, business advice services, growth opportunities and skills funding, as well as many other services to businesses. Why wouldn’t people want to live, work and invest here? We have the skills, jobs and training right here. Chesterfield really is town of opportunity.
