Impressive results Happy with the initial service provided by Layers, this happy couple had no hesitation in returning to the flooring specialists.

W

Iith a huge choice of flooring options to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as a friendly, professional service that has earned them a solid reputation, it’s little wonder that Layers Flooring customers are lining up to sing the company’s praises. Happy to share their first-class experience are David and Barbara Arnold of Dronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers to supply and fit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen and dining room. Mr and Mrs Arnold said: “We first chose Layers eight years ago when they fitted our kitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went

to them because they are a local firm and so we thought we would give them a try. They were in the Civic Centre back then and we used to pass them while out shopping. “Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in the dining room too, we used Layers again. The dining room used to be carpeted but now it is more easily accessible for David, who uses a wheeled walker, as it is all one level and totally flat. “When we visited the shop to enquire about the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved things around in the shop to make it more easily accessible for him. “We had something quite specific in mind and were shown lots of samples. The choice was great and they explained about the different types of vinyl, helping us to reach the right decision. After we had chosen, they said it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient time for us. “In the meantime, a man came round to measure the room and he brought samples so we could double check we were completely happy with our choice. “Then when the fitter arrived a few days later we recognised each other as he was the one who had fitted our kitchen flooring eight years ago. He placed plywood down in the

dining room – as he had done previously with the kitchen – before laying the flooring so it was nice and smooth. The vinyl is also very thick so it looks just like real wooden floorboards. “We were so impressed with the fitter’s workmanship; he was brilliant. We still can’t get our head around how he fitted the flooring as it was all in one piece but it’s incredibly neat – especially around the radiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back into place with no trouble. All in under two hours. “He was so impressed with his handiwork he even asked us if he could take a photograph for his portfolio! “If anybody asks us where to get new flooring, we would definitely recommend Layers. And in the future when we need new carpets we’ll certainly be popping up there.” Layers Flooring 55 Highfield Road, Hilltop Dronfield S18 1UW Tel: 01246 292969 Branch also at: 46 Sandygate Road, Crosspool Sheffield S10 5RY Tel: 0114 266 9888 Roll end centre at: 10 Hicks Street, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8BL Tel: 0114 278 1514

SS Eating Out

English tradition

Afternoon tea is one of many new additions at Ward’s Nurseries and Garden Centre, writes Fiona Barber.

T

here is one tradition that has not only stood the test of time, but has also soared in popularity over the last few years. The renaissance of afternoon tea shows no signs of slowing and has become as synonymous with our fair isle’s heritage as Sunday roasts and discussing the weather. Afternoon tea was typically a grand affair, where upper-class women wearing long gowns, gloves and hats would meet in the drawing room and nibble sandwiches and drink tea in the middle of the afternoon. Nowadays it is much more accessible and affordable, and can be enjoyed as a relaxed late lunch, or as an occasional indulgence to celebrate special events such as Mother’s Day. For those looking to enjoy a taste of tea in tranquil surroundings, Ward’s Nurseries and Garden Centre recently added another string to its already impressive bow, by Little Cupcake clothing

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

offering customers a delicious afternoon tea from 2pm until 5pm. Director Sue Poulton says: “We started doing cream teas in the afternoon and they proved so popular we decided to expand on the idea.” I decided to put this newest addition to the test on a recent visit and ordered tea for one, along with an Americano. Although the sandwiches are a selection of the chef’s choice, if there is anything you’d prefer not to have – smoked salmon in my case – the staff at Ward’s are happy to oblige. Four sandwiches and three desserts came delicately arranged on a classic two-tiered plate. The savoury assortment included wonderfully gooey brie, which was offset by a sweet cranberry sauce, classic ham, a smooth cream cheese and cucumber, and a flavoursome tuna mayonnaise. While I was tucking into my sandwiches, across the table my dining companion was enjoying a toasted panini. Lavishly filled with melted brie and succulent turkey breast, it was a truly indulgent lunchtime treat. The afternoon tea sweet selection was just as impressive, with a beautiful strawberry cheesecake – featuring a biscuit base topped generously with a light mousse – a scone served with strawberry jam and clotted cream and a shortbread biscuit dipped in chocolate. Feeling generous, I shared the sweet treats with my companion and he was equally complimentary. Ward’s menu is extensive; as well as the huge variety of sandwiches and cakes, there are jacket potatoes, salads, quiches and omelettes available. While popular options like their Sunday

roasts and legendary meat and potato pies will always have a place on the menu, Sue says they’re thinking of changing things up a bit. “We’re looking at doing a world-wide theme, such as a Greek dish one day and Mexican another. It’s important to keep things fresh and try to surprise people. We tried the Moroccan lamb as a new dish and it’s really popular now.” As well as cooking for their customers, Ward’s has all the tools you need to make the most of what’s left of the summer. Try a wood burning or gas barbecue, or one of their Kadai barbecue fire bowls – ideal for alfresco cooking and socialising. Ward’s have also recently added Little Cupcakes to their children’s range. These baby clothes are made from the finest cotton and are beautifully packaged to look like cupcakes – a very special gift for any new arrival. So after you’ve enjoyed afternoon tea, don’t forget to explore the rest of what’s on offer at Ward’s; their huge selection of plants, aquatics, and furniture is enviable.

Family lawyer is ‘Vouched For’ by Times & Telegraph M

ichelle Cooper, one of the region’s noted and award winning family solicitors is celebrating not only the launch of the first family law firm in Sheffield, she is also celebrating her recent achievement after being named in the Vouched For list, published by the Sunday Telegraph & The Times, as one of the top 50 lawyers in the UK. This prestigious list is all about client recommendation. Clients have to score solicitors on all aspects of how their case has been dealt with and each client has to be individually verified by the scheme to ensure that they are genuine. In the recent survey in conjunction with The Sunday Telegraph, Michelle Cooper was one of only a handful of lawyers in the region to be recognised. The comments and scores she received were exceptional and she has a five-star rating. Michelle comments: “I am proud to have launched the first family law firm in Sheffield, dealing with divorce, separation, finances and children disputes. “It has been something I have wanted to do for a long time, as I believe a firm that concentrates solely on family law, is able to tailor and stream line its service to each individual client in a cost effective way, so clients are getting an expert and individual service at a very competitive price. “A lot of my work is through recommendations of both former clients and other business professionals, so I was aware that, hopefully, I was meeting and indeed exceeding clients expectations. However, I was extremely surprised and delighted to see the reviews from clients on Vouched For. “I do not intend to rest on those laurels. The reason I have started my own firm is to give clients an outstanding service.

Leading solicitor celebrates place in national top 50 list plus launch of Sheffield’s first family law firm. “We are constantly reviewing the services we offer, and how we can deliver that service and meet clients’ needs in more innovative ways.” “Everyone likes something for free and we offer a range of free initial advice services including a first free interview at which we give client advice on the full range of options and prices. We also offer a telephone helpline and web question and answer page.” “We come up with an individual plan to assist clients on the most costeffective way, such as fixed fee and payas-you-go. “I believe passionately that one size does not fit all. I have a range of clients from all walks of life. “Getting specialist advice at the right time does undoubtedly save costs in the long run and many clients comment how much better they feel when they have seen me and know what their options are.”’

HOME & AWAY From sun-kissed beach ceremonies to traditional church processions, Southside weighs up the options of getting married at home or abroad. By Eleanor Hyde.

P

ure white waves break on golden sands, palm trees provide shade from the blazing sun, you gaze into your partner’s eyes and utter those precious words... if this sounds like your dream wedding then going abroad is definitely for you. On the other hand, language barriers and the fear of coming home to find that your marriage isn’t legally binding are probably things you would much rather avoid. Nevertheless, over 850,000 couples are expected to shun rainy England for nuptials in the sun this year. The main reasons for this trend seem to be lower costs, fewer guests (though you do run the risk of alienating distant cousins) and being able to combine your wedding with your hen/stag do as well as your honeymoon. So how easy is it to plan your big day compared to closer to home?

Getting married abroad The best place to start if you’re organising a wedding abroad is to contact a travel agent. Winter, beach and luxury weddings are just a few choices, making this a slightly more challenging decision than simply choosing the local village church. Once you’ve decided what sort of wedding you’d like and where, a good travel agency should do the leg work for you, making it almost as easy as saying ‘I do’. A wedding coordinator is usually included in the holiday wedding package price and, being based in your chosen hotel or resort, they come fully equipped with expert local knowledge and information about the legalities of getting married abroad. You’ll be safe in the knowledge that you won’t come home to discover you’re still officially single. Some guests may not be able to afford flights, but it may well be that a smaller wedding of 15-20 close family and friends is preferable. By marrying abroad you may even choose to be generous, partially funding some or all of your guest’s flights. Many guests treat a wedding abroad as a holiday, creating a week-long wedding celebration they and you will never forget. However, it is worth considering whether spending an entire week with family is your dream start to married life. So just how much will a wedding abroad set you back? Packages differ in cost depending on where you go, how long you go for and what is included, but the following two examples show how inexpensive they can be. A wedding package available in Mexico including flowers, wine for 40 people, dinner for two, couple massages, a minister and the marriage certificate in the local language starts from £769. A wedding package for Disneyland Florida including a six-hour limousine service, organist for the ceremony, violinist for the reception, a two-tiered cake, champagne, photographer and flowers, starts from £3,500. Of course, there will probably be additional costs, but with reports of the average UK wedding totalling £20,000, it’s easy to see why weddings abroad are proving so popular.

Case Study 2: Kelly recently married Jonathan Mann at Halifax Hall, Sheffield Did you ever consider getting married abroad? I would have considered it but Jonathan wanted to marry in Sheffield so we could have a big wedding and all our family and friends could come. What do you think are the benefits of having a British wedding? We were able to plan everything ourselves and could view venues easily. It also meant we could use companies that we knew were reliable. The flowers were arranged by the same people that my sister used for her wedding. Did you have any concerns about getting married in Britain? I suppose the weather is something you can never guarantee here, but it couldn’t have ruined our day. When we were having our photographs taken it drizzled a bit, but we really didn’t mind; it’s all just part of it. We had some gorgeous weather on our honeymoon in Florida – as well as some tropical storms – and had a fantastic time.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Case Study 1: Lucy recently married husband Damian Read in Marmari, Greece Why did you decide to marry abroad? A lot of our friends had already got married in Sheffield and there are only so many available venues in the area. We’d always discussed getting married abroad and just wanted something a bit different. How did friends and family react? My mum was a bit concerned at first because it’s a big ask for people to come away for a week when the wedding is only a one-day event, but it was nice because it ended up just being prettymuch all family. Was there anything you had to consider special? We had to think about dresses and outfits, because of the weather, and I was a bit nervous about not being able to view things beforehand like you would in England. You also don’t arrange a lot – like booking flowers, hair and makeup – until you’re there. But we’d been in touch with the wedding coordinator by email beforehand, and they do weddings every day, so we had faith everything would go to plan.

Getting married at home So what are the advantages of having a wedding closer to home? The obvious bonus is that you can have a larger wedding in which the majority of your family and friends can attend. Often when a couple marries abroad, they feel obliged to host an at-home reception too, to include those that weren’t able to make it. This adds a big cost onto what might have started as a cheap wedding – pointless when you could have held the wedding at home in the first place. For those who choose to stay at home but still want an alternative to the traditional church or registry office, there are many options. Grand stately homes are particularly popular, as are more relaxed outdoor weddings, but if you want to go for something a bit more unusual, how about a shark aquarium or a whisky vault? Unsurprisingly, these offbeat options come with a hefty price tag; a Yorkshire castle costs over £5,000 to hire, and a woodland wedding over £4,000 depending on the add-ons. Wedding planners in the UK cost around £1,500-2,000 depending on the size of your wedding. Though they do come with a lot of expert knowledge and can guide you through every step of the process, ten to 15 per cent of your wedding budget is a lot to spend on one person.

Looking to add colour and character to their home, the Bentleys didn’t hesitate in calling in the experts at Dronfield s. Carpets & Floor

There are no bounds to the service offered by Dronfield Carpets & Floors. Just ask barge owner Paul Thompson... n unconventional home

needn’t mean sacrificing on traditional home improvements, and no one knows this better than boat resident Paul Thompson. Paul started building the barge moored at Tully’s Marine, Rotherham in June 2013. His vision for the project required a bespoke approach and a number of open-minded suppliers. So when Paul visited Dronfield Carpets & Floors, he was pleased to find a team as excited about the project as he was. “Some companies were dead against the project and couldn’t help, whilst others were happy to get on board,” says Paul.“When I told the owner Tom the flooring was for a boat, it didn’t faze him at all. He just said, ‘Let’s go for it!’” And what Tom and his team don’t know about boats, they more than make up for in flooring expertise. They made suggestions,

were able to answer all of Paul’s questions and although the team were happy to install the floorboards, Paul decided to fit them himself.

“They were unbelievably easy to fit,” says Paul.“If floorboards are of a high quality, they tend to slot together much better than cheap ones.” Barge builders tend to favour carpet, assuming boats are cold places to live, but got around this by choosing engineered Paul oak wood flooring, perfect for under-floor heating. “Solid wood can expand and shrink depending on humidity, so I’ve gone for a ply wood that won’t do that as much,” he says.“I know that if I spill something, the boards won’t lift and it’s hard-wearing. I’ve already dropped things and they haven’t left a dint.” This wood has a natural, textured look, so even if scratches occur, they do nothing to impact badly on the style. Paul believes the

flooring will last long into the future, when he finally hands the boat down to one of his three children, who are all now young adults. “The wood is a good thickness. Even if my kids want to change the flooring, it can be sanded down or easily lifted and replaced.” Paul has found the flooring to be the most important feature of the boat, when it came to adding the rest of the interior.“Once you’ve got the floor right, everything else fits into place. I was impressed by how accurately Tom measured it up.A spirit level doesn’t really work on a boat!” So, what has impressed Paul the most about the service at Dronfield Carpets & Floors? “Unlike big-name, general DIY stores, Tom and his team thoroughly know their trade and their prices are just as competitive. They were professional, friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them.” To find out how Dronfield Carpets & Floors can update your home, pop into their modern, open plan showroom or scan this QR code to take a virtual tour. You can also take a close look at the shop on Google Maps to see everything they have to offer. Make a good impression Your drive or patio says a lot about your home, so let ProPave make it stand out from the crowd.

F

irst impressions count. For homeowners who take pride in their property’s appearance, a well-paved driveway or patio and a beautifully manicured garden – the first things any visitor to your home will see – are top priorities. If you’re looking to spruce up the outside of your house, ProPave is the company to call. With more than 25 years’ experience, this local, reliable business has been trusted by many of the region’s homeowners to breathe new life into their property’s exteriors. ProPave’s experienced team of three is led by owner Paul, who deals with each job from start to finish. “We also do all of our own work so you won’t have to juggle different contractors coming to your home,” says Paul. They begin by meeting with clients to discuss ideas and then get to work on the design. Though many people have a good idea of what they want and Paul is more than happy to be directed by his clients, ProPave are also well versed in guiding those who are unsure. ProPave specialise in all aspects of hard landscaping, including natural stone block paving, granite stone sets and natural sandstone flags including English York stone

and Indian sandstone paving. They can also do work on new lawns, returfs, garden maintenance, concreting, fencing and brickwork, among other things. Most recently, they have added another impressive string to their bow in the form of artificial grass, the low maintenance, attractive alternative to a traditional lawn. ProPave supplies quality products and service in all projects. As a result, they were one of the original invitees to Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Traders scheme, and are approved by major paving suppliers Plasmor and Natural Paving Products. They have a large portfolio of more than 1,500 completed driveways and patios and are council-listed for kerb drops with Derbyshire Highways, Bassetlaw Council and Sheffield City Council. On average, ProPave completes 60 driveways each year and have experience in paving both private residencies and commercial properties, from small patios to large driveways. They pride themselves on their value-formoney service. “What makes us stand out is the quality our of products and service for the price you pay and that we don’t pass work on to different people,” says Paul. “We have a very positive response from

customers and tend to gain a lot of work through word of mouth. Last year, we completed a young man’s patio after we’d been recommended to him by his parents whose driveway we did ten years ago." When dealing with ProPave, expect a hassle-free, reliable and professional service. They offer a five-year installation guarantee, giving you extra confidence in the work they do. SS Heating

Peace of mind

To make sure your heating system is in tip-top condition, and to avoid any nasty surprises, choose one of the many service plans available at Blueflame.

A

s summer draws to a close, it is time to turn our attention to our boilers in preparation for the colder months. Before we know it, those chilly winter evenings will be creeping in again, and it’s important to ensure your heating system is in working order, so you can escape from the cold to a haven of snugly warmth. Blueflame is a local Chesterfield-based gas service company that specialises in providing annual service plans for central heating systems. Established 12 years ago, this professional family run business has over 30 years’ combined experience in the industry. Heating and hot water are things that we rely on completely, but we don’t always realise this until something goes wrong. When it does, it’s incredibly frustrating – and often very expensive. Service plans are a way to spread the cost of these breakdowns through monthly payments. They help to ensure someone is always on hand to help if things do go wrong. With any boiler, the parts and labour charges that come with ad hoc repairs can be very costly. The advantage of a service plan is

SOUTHSIDE 38

the peace of mind it provides – as payments are made on a monthly basis you’ll have nothing to worry about, safe in the knowledge that there’ll be someone on hand to fix your system when it fails. Something that often discourages us from agreeing contracts is the small print – but there are no such worries with Blueflame. “Our terms and conditions are nine points on a single side of A4 in 12 point font,” says company director John Beevers. “You won’t have to trawl through a book of details!” Blueflame offers several different levels of cover, but the basic packages are silver, which covers boilers, or gold, which also covers the full central heating system. Compared to the larger national firms, prices are very competitive.

Blueflame specialise in service plans, but that’s by no means all they do. They offer a complete range of gas and plumbing services, including boiler swaps, upgrades and power flushing to mention just a few. Of course, when it comes to plumbing and gas businesses, the most important thing isn’t the services on offer but how trustworthy and reliable the company is. Fortunately, that’s exactly what Blueflame are – they’re Gas Safe registered, and members of Derbyshire County Council’s Trusted Trader Scheme. What’s even more impressive is Blueflame’s fabulous reputation. They’ve got a database full of satisfied customers – many of whom return to this friendly company again and again. Blueflame are on hand to help all year round, so contact them today to be safe in the knowledge that you’ve already planned ahead for a cosy winter. SS Auctions Hansons valuer Edward Rycroft with the Turner painting

Words: Stephanie Burns

1931 Marx Merry Makers Mouse Band

Place your bids...

Looking for something out of the ordinary? From fine art to fine wines, Hansons have some very interesting auctions coming up.

I

t has been a successful year for Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers, with some fascinating and highly soughtafter items coming under the hammer. A fine art auction held earlier this summer saw a Florence Nightingale desk lamp, used by her when in her Midlands residence, attract international interest from America and nearer to home. After a closefought auction, it eventually sold in the UK for £17,000. And it wasn’t the only item piquing the interests of in-house, phone and online bidders. Exquisite jewellery and watches, alluring Oriental collections, outstanding paintings and some incredible weapons and

SOUTHSIDE 44

militaria threw up some awe-inspiring surprises. Those who missed these auctions still have plenty to look forward to, with a fabulous schedule of dates coming up this autumn. On Monday 21 September at 10.30am, the wine, whisky and spirits auction will feature a host of bottles from across the country. Following the success of April’s auction, the September date proves to be even better with rare whiskies expected to be the star performers this time round. Highlights include two bottles (from different vendors) of the Macallan 25-year Anniversary Malt, each valued at £800-1,200. Bottles of Springbank, including 1963, 1978 and a 21-year-old are also set to gain good prices in the £100s. Other unusual and rare whiskies include a Glenmorangie 1971 Culloden bottle, a Coleburn 21-year-old, a Glenrothes 1979 and many others from two private collections. In addition to spirits, there are some excellent champagnes and wines consigned so far, including Dom Perignon vintages from the 1970s onwards, an impressive magnum of limited edition Ruinart L’Exclusive champagne and vintage port. For locals who are more interested in art than alcohol, the Made in Derbyshire auction on Saturday 26 September is ideal. The star of this show will be the antique oil painting of Knowle Hill in 1887 by celebrated local artist

George Turner (18411910), dubbed Derbyshire’s John Constable. In original gilt gallery frame, it measures approximately 49cm x 75cm and is estimated to fetch between £4,000 to £6,000. The following month, on Tuesday 27 October at 10.30am, the toys, railwayana, cameras and post/cigarette cards auction will take visitors back in time. Of particular note is the 1931 Marx Merry Makers Mouse Band, which was discovered at Etwall valuation day and is expected to create worldwide interest among antique toy collectors when it appears at Hansons. Made by the Louis Marx Company, it was one of the most popular lithographed tin wind-up toys the company ever made and was based on the figure of Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse. This version is expected to make £400-600. For more information on these auctions, and other upcoming dates, visit www.hansonsauctioneers.co.uk or call the saleroom on 01283 733988. SS Travel Pictures: Ken Done

You’ll be greeted with a smile at Woodbrook, but the wind can play havoc with your round

A sense of history Just outside Dublin you’ll find stunning links courses steeped in tradition that offer a challenge to all types of golfer. John Murphy put them to the test.

O

ne of the great pleasures of visiting older, well-established golf clubs is absorbing the sense of history that pervades both clubhouse and course. One perfect example is Woodbrook Golf Club just outside Dublin. Black and white framed photographs of star golfers from a bygone era line the corridors: there’s Dai Rees playing at Woodbrook, Peter Thompson, Max Faulkener, Brian Barnes, Neil Coles and many more. The sense of tradition extends to the grand clubhouse too, where the course director mentions with a smile to a visitor that the rule for adults is the same as it is for juniors – no hats in the clubhouse please. His charming Irish delivery means both official and visitor laugh and share a drink. At Woodbrook the sense of eccentric history is reinforced by the actual design of the clubhouse – it was formerly a cricket pavilion and bears testimony to the course’s founder Sir Stanley Cochrane’s great love of the sport. A cricket bell, which tolled at the start and finish of play, now hangs in the bar. The course is very special. It is situated

SOUTHSIDE 46

on an oasis of land with fantastic views of the Irish Sea on one side and the green haze of the imposing Dublin and Wicklow mountains on the other. The first nine are away from the sea but the back nine play out along the striking coast-line of breakers and sand. As it is a flat course you know where you are playing to on just about every hole, which is a relief when compared to some more modern stadia courses. There is an impressive run of holes after the turn which stretch as far as you can see along the coast – yards of verdant green populated by flags swirling in the wind. And being flat, the wind does have an impact on the course. When it blows from the north nine holes are affected, including three out of the last four. When it’s from the south five holes, including three par 5s on the back nine, become very tough long holes. A severe crosswind from the east will affect

every hole and make Woodbrook’s unusual configuration of five par 3s and five par 5s an even harder course to master. Woodbrook is just ten miles from Dublin and well worth the short journey. Green fees range from €45 to €50, which represents excellent value to play on a course graced by the likes of Christy O’Connor Jnr who won the Irish Open there in 1975. More details can be found at www.woodbrook.ie. Another course both steeped in history and close to Dublin, with ironically also a link

to the famous Christy O’Connor golfing family, is the spectacular Royal Dublin Golf Club. Christy O’Connor Snr joined Royal Dublin in 1959 as club professional and is still associated with the club. His eaglebirdie-eagle finish to win the Carroll’s International at Royal Dublin in 1966 still ranks as the finest finish to any Irish professional golf tournament. There is a plaque on the course to mark this achievement and the grand clubhouse has a special Christy O’Connor room to commemorate the famous Irish man’s prowess as a golfing legend, confirmed by his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2009. The course was established 130 years ago on a spit of land, Bull Island in Dublin Bay, and is attached to the mainland by a couple of bridges and is designed very much in traditional links style. The famous golf architect Harry Colt (who designed Sheffield’s Hallamshire course) was responsible for the design after the First World War and more recently Martin Hawtree undertook a major €4.5million re-design to adapt the course to the more modern game. This was completed in 2006. Four hundred yards were added to

the par 72 course which now exceeds 7,269 yards and the greens were recontoured to raise them and create run off areas. The changes have helped the course to be ranked 13 out of 58 True Irish Links as published in a recent survey and ensured that the Irish Amateur Open returned to the course. Again it is relatively flat and exposed to the vagaries of the wind with the majority of the holes being visible tee to green. It’s an enjoyable test of golf without being as intimidating as other links courses such as Ballybunnion or Lahinch. Green fees range from €75 to €150 depending on time of year but special rates are available. Check www.theroyaldublingolfclub.com for details. Another course to be enjoyed in the area is Wicklow, which is perched on a rugged cliff top with stunning views over the Irish Sea with Wicklow mountains forming a spectacular backdrop. Holes stretch around a relatively new clubhouse with each one presenting a unique challenge as the gradient of the cliffs mean there is plenty of run on the ball and difficult angles to negotiate. The course was founded in 1904 and redeveloped in 1991 as a par 71 with three par 5s and four par 3s. The signature hole is the daunting sixth where players are required to drive across the sea from a tee perched on a promontory across to the fairway beyond. Views are spectacular and golf could really be secondary to the fine walk. The clubhouse is very sociable and welcoming with a buzzing atmosphere and a

strong social calendar. It’s situated only half an hour from Dublin so a trip is strongly recommended, especially with green fees at around €30. More details are available at www.wicklowgolfclub.ie. If Dublin is not your destination then the Glenview Hotel in Delgany, Glen of The Downs, is an excellent base from where the three courses and others can be explored along with the stunning scenery of the Glen and the Wicklow mountains. On the other hand a golfing trip in the Wicklow area can easily be combined with a break in the capital. Dublin has many attractions such as tours of the Guinness Brewery and Jamesons Distillery. One new attraction is the Teeling Whiskey Distillery in the Newmarket area. It is the first distillery to be opened in Dublin in 125 years and is the only operational one in the city. The business specialises in the release of small batch, imaginatively created, craft whiskies which can be sampled on highly informative tours starting at €14 to include tastings and cocktails. For more information at www.teelingwhiskey.com.

Factbox: Irish Ferries now offers up to 16 crossings of the Irish Sea daily, with a fleet of four superb ships including the only genuine ‘fastcraft’ between the UK and Ireland, the twin-hulled catamaran Dublin Swift which takes as little as one hour and 49 minutes to cross from Holyhead to Dublin. We sailed on Irish Ferries’ flagship Ulysses, which, at almost 51 tonnes, is the largest and best-equipped ship in the Irish Sea. Cruise-ferry fares start at £79 each way for car and driver, with no extra charges for carrying golf clubs or any other baggage in the car. Additional passengers in the same car are from £30 each way. Irish Ferries can also package up stays at selected hotels, B&Bs and cottages to create great value self-drive holidays. SS Motoring

From facelifts to first looks, Jordan Cutforth rounds up autumn’s motoring news.

Even more impressive Stylish new Fiat 500

The brand-new Fiat 500 will be on sale this September priced from £10,890. It’s more of an update than a full vehicle overall with new visuals inside and out, improved technology, greener engines and the choice of even more personalisation. Edition 21 The Audi A8 Edition 21 is an exclusive version of the flagship A8 with only 121 cars being built for UK customers. The Edition 21 stands apart from the rest of the A8 range thanks to its unique exterior styling and exclusive interior highlights. The exterior is styled to resemble the high performance S8 thanks to redesigned front and rear bumpers along with more pronounced side sills and some unique 20-inch double spoke alloy wheels. You get more standard equipment than you’ll find on regular A8 models too. It’ll be powered by a 258hp 3.0-litre V6 TDI making 47.9mpg on the combined cycle yet can sprint to 62mph in 5.9 seconds. Available to order now in standard and long wheelbase form priced from £72,525.

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta has always been a great car thanks to its impressive engines, driving dynamics and its achingly gorgeous supercar-inspired looks. Alfa has made the car even better by making all the engines more powerful yet more efficient. The most impressive improvement is on the 1.6-litre JTDM-2 turbo diesel which previously made 105hp, produced 70.6mpg on the combined cycle and emitted just 104g/km of CO2. Now these figures are 120hp, 74.3mpg and 99g/km of CO2 respectively. Starting from £18,450, the Giulietta’s list price hasn’t been affected.

Superb step forward

Skoda has done the impossible and made the new Superb even better than its predecessor. Built on VW’s MQB platform, its 75kg lighter than before yet taller, wider and longer too. This means practicality has increased no end. There’s more space inside for occupants and the boot has increased by 30 litres measuring 625 litres with seats in place and 1,760 litres with them down. For the estate, the figures are 660-litres and 1,950-litres respectively. It’s powered by a vast array of powerful yet economical engines, the most frugal being a 1.6 TDI producing 70.6mpg. It even comes with the same 2.0-litre 276hp engine fitted to the ballistic SEAT Leon Cupra 280. Prices start from £18,640 for the hatch and £19,840 for the estate. Deliveries start in September.

Competitive edge When the Ford EcoSport was first released, it’s fair to say it wasn’t the best compact SUV on the market. Ford has addressed these issues and now it can finally compete. The most noticeable thing is that you can have the EcoSport without the rear mounted spare wheel. The second is they’ve improved the driving dynamics with a 10mm lower ride height, a stiffer rear torsion beam, revised spring and shock absorber rates and a revised power steering system. It’s more refined to with more sound-insulating materials used. The EcoSport is powered by a 94hp 1.5-litre TDCI (64.2mpg and 115g/km of CO2), a 123hp 1.0-litre EcoBoost unit (52.3mpg and 125g/km of CO2) or a 1.5-litre Ti-VCT (44.8mpg and 149g/km of CO2). Priced from £14,245, it’s available now.
