COFFEE SHOPS The new wave of craft coffee has well and truly flooded Sheffield. With a huge choice of independent coffee shops opening up, our beloved city is increasingly dotted with independent gems and hideouts. Whether you’re looking for a long black or a flat white, a laid back dinner, or an early kick-start to the morning, here’s some of our favourite cafes and coffee shops, both old and new.

LUCKY FOX

THE BLUE MOON CAFÉ

A Brooklyn-inspired diner in the heart of Sheffield, cooking up juicy fried chicken, waffles and delicious brunches. And if the pie tastes just like Momma made, it’s probably because Momma actually made it - that morning. 72 Division Street, Sheffield, S1 4GF www.theluckyfox.com

The Blue Moon Café is a specialist vegetarian and vegan café in the heart of Sheffield. Over the years, the café has been established as one of the best cheaper eateries in the city, with a main meal and drink costing under £10. They’re also licensed to sell a range of vegan and organic wines alongside a plated meal. 2 St James Row, Sheffield, S1 2EW www.bluemooncafesheffield.co.uk

HOWST While it might be one of the smallest café ventures to hit Sheffield, HowSt certainly packs a punch. Rich local beans are used to create the generous assortment of speciality coffees, while the brunch menu favours a selection of locally sourced breakfast choices and light bites from sandwiches and toasties to burgers and salads. 46 Howard Street, Sheffield, S1 2LX www.howst.co.uk

THE RUDE SHIPYARD An independent café, bookshop and place where things happen at the heart of the Sheffield Antiques Quarter. With a focus on good homemade food and an atmosphere like no other, there really is no better place to relax on a lazy afternoon than this café-cum-bookshop. 89 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield, S7 1FE www.therudeshipyard.com

TAMPER Tamper bring the best of New Zealand’s café culture to Sheffield, where coffee takes centre stage and only top quality, tasty food makes its way through the serving hatch. Alongside the gourmet coffee, Tamper serve up freshly made cocktails, craft beers and wine until 10pm every Friday night. Sellers Wheel, 149 Arundel Street, Sheffield, S1 2NU. www.tampercoffee.co.uk

MOON UNIT’S TEA EMPORIUM

STEAM YARD

HIDDEN GEM

Steam Yard is Sheffield’s own slice of Americana, and, on summer days, you can enjoy your Steve McQueen - that’s a coffee and a doughnut (but let’s be clear: that’s not just any coffee and doughnut. They come from The Depot bakery on Arundel Street) - out front in the Aberdeen Courtyard. 1 & 2 Aberdeen Court, 97 Division Street, Sheffield, S1 4GE www.steamyard.co.uk

A quiet retreat set back from Ringinglow Road. Call in for coffee and cake or something more substantial like homemade soup, light bites and daily specials. And see for yourself all the work the wonderful team does at WORK Ltd - a local, unique and very special charity that offers people with learning disabilities a chance to reach their full potential in life. Rear of Bents Green School, Ringinglow Road, Sheffield, S11 7TB. www.hiddengemcafe.co.uk

CHEAP & CHEERFUL BARS Whether it be post lecture, the weekend, or even pre-lecture if you’re really taking freshers seriously, finding a nice bar that doesn’t break the bank isn’t actually that hard in Sheffield. At most places you’re looking at £3-£4 for a pint and if you’re charged more than a fiver for a double you’ve been robbed. With so many cheap spots around, we chose some of the best to make that quick pint a little bit easier.

THE CAVENDISH

NURSERY TAVERN

The jewel in West Street’s cheap bar crown. Go in with a tenner and you’ll usually manage to get yourself a burger and a couple of pints. 220-238 West Street, Sheffield, S1 4EU www.thecavendishsheffield.co.uk

It’s rare you find somewhere cheap on Ecclesall Road so seize the opportunity the Nursery Tavern offers and try out one of the city’s fancier areas at non-fancy prices. 276 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PE www.facebook.com/Nurserytavern

WEST STREET LIVE A place of dreams, nightmares and a thousand drink deals printed on A4 paper and plastered on all the walls. It’s probably best you go and discover what it’s all about for yourself… 128 West Street, Sheffield, S1 4ES www.weststreetlive.co.uk

THE PLACE Conveniently located five minutes from Endcliffe, you can feed two of you for less than a tenner and get a couple of VKs to wash it down for a fiver. Nile Street, Broomhill, Sheffield, S10 2PQ www.theplacesheffield.co.uk

FROG AND PARROT If you believe the sign on the wall, this place gets namechecked in an Arctic Monkeys song, probably the cheapest spot on Division Street so you can be trendy but not bankrupt. 94 Division Street, Sheffield, S1 4GF www.frogandparrot-sheffield.co.uk

INDIE EATS Sheffield has always had a historic independent streak. From being the birth place of the steel industry in the 18th century, to spawning legendary bands like The Arctic Monkeys, Pulp and Reverend and the Makers, the city has never been one to follow the crowd. So it seems only fitting that Sheffield is finding fame as a hotspot of independent food culture in the UK. Housing plenty of hidden gems for the discerning millennial looking for a break from the mainstream.

CRAFT & DOUGH

THE HARLEY

With three venues across the city, prepare to become bezzy mates with Craft & Dough. Situated perfectly for that post-lecture slice, Craft & Dough are creators of luscious and innovative pizzas and, with a membership card, you can save about £10 every visit. 1A Kelham Square, Kelham Island, S3 8SD 359 - 361 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PF 44 Campo Lane, Sheffield, S1 2EG www.craftanddough.co.uk

The Harley is a rite of passage - ask any post grad. Known for their late night dinner (Mon Sat: 10pm - 4am) Twisted Burger Company mixes delicious locally sourced burgers with a passion for pushing boundaries. Complementing The Harley’s somewhat illicit vibe – gooey, unctuous, and quite naughty. 334 Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2HW www.theharley.co.uk

THE RIVERSIDE URBAN ¼ Urban ¼ have juicy Yorkshire beef burgers, beers, cocktails, milkshakes and housemade doughnuts on tap. Luckily for you, it’s also right next to Central Quay halls of residence, so makes the perfect start to any night out. 1B Kelham Island, Sheffield, S3 8RY www.urbanquarter.co

Nestled on the banks of the River Don, the Riverside is one of the most eclectic and bestloved Sheffield venues. Since being taken over by True North Brew Co in 2015, the venue has been given a mini-makeover and a new menu has been unveiled, focusing on home cooked dishes. 1 Mowbray Street, Sheffield, S3 8EN www.riversidesheffield.co.uk

OLD HOUSE There isn’t any need to explain in detail The Old House ideology of food and cooking. It’s simple. Everything is homemade, from award-winning sausages to truly scrumptious handmade pies. And, if you’re in desperate need of sustenance, the Sunday lunch tradition is still somewhat of an institution. 113 - 117 Devonshire Street, Sheffield, S3 7SB www.theoldhousesheffield.com

GALLERIES & THEATRES Rinsed the museums, attractions and bars but still hunting for your culture fix? Arts lovers new to Sheffield are in for a treat, as some of the best theatres and galleries are found right here.

Slap bang in the middle of the city centre, The Crucible Theatre is home to the most important event in professional snooker, the World Snooker Championship. The Studio Theatre offers a smaller, more intimate space, and is the focus for new companies and community productions. 55 Norfolk Street, S1 1DA www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

THE LYCEUM THEATRE With decades of top quality plays to its name, it’s not all about what happens on stage - the building itself is worth the visit alone. Built in 1897, the Lyceum is the only surviving theatre outside of London designed by famous theatre architect W.G.R. Sprague, and is the last example of an Edwardian auditorium in Sheffield. 55 Norfolk Street, Sheffield, S1 1DA www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

THE LANTERN THEATRE The history of the Lantern Theatre is as impressive as some of the performances. At over 120 years old, it is Sheffield’s oldest surviving theatrical venue, and with only 84 seats it is an intimate and atmospheric space. 18 Kenwood Park Road, Sheffield, S7 1NF www.lanterntheatre.org.uk

MOOR THEATRE DELICATESSEN Theatre Delicatessen turn disused spaces into experimental arts venues and, while in Sheffield in 2014, they got wind of the former Woolworths building lying empty on The Moor. Full of atmosphere, with secret corners and dark rooms, it is perfect for immersive and promenade performance practice. The Moor, Sheffield, S1 4PF www.theatredelicatessen.co.uk THE

VINTAGE SHOPS Sheffield’s ever-expanding collection of vintage shops has us spoilt for choice when it comes to finding unique retro pieces. Here are Vibe’s top spots for second-hand shopping in Sheffield.

COW

MOOCH VINTAGE

COW offers shoppers the opportunity to rummage through their rails and find one-of-a-kind and trendy vintage pieces while also nabbing some more modern vintageinspired pieces. Their rework section features garments made by taking vintage patterns and styles and giving them a contemporary spin, so everyone from devout vintage enthusiasts to complete beginners can get in on the action. With a black-painted exterior and stylish interior, COW’s own style matches its well-selected collections. Although on the pricier side compared to others, its friendly service and quirky environment make it well worth a visit. 156-160 West Street, Sheffield, S1 4ES Tel: 0114 272 6276. www.wearecow.com

In the heart of Sheffield’s vintage scene on Division Street, Mooch Vintage’s excellence lies in its truly welcoming customer service - its owner and staff are always chatting away to customers and giving suggestions. Boasting an array of fur coats and men’s jackets as well as elaborate retro dresses and men’s polo shirts, this shop is truly for the vintage aficionado. 76 Division Street, Sheffield, S1 4GF Tel: 0114 327 4393

VULGAR One of Sheffield’s relatively new shops on the vintage scene, Vulgar has already made a name for itself as one of the best thanks to its thoughtfully picked rails of the latest trends. Nailing the 90s era, this is the shop to go to for spaghetti strap tops and dresses as well as crop tops and flannels. Its designer section might be out of our price range, but it’s always nice to admire original pieces from a bygone era from the likes of Versace and Jean-Paul Gaultier. 2 The Forum, 127-129 Devonshire Street, Sheffield, S3 7SB. www.vulgarsheffield.com

THRIFTY STORE Having opened only last year, this shop makes the list for its extensive range of vintage – don’t let its exterior fool you, the store is a far-reaching space housing rails upon rails of retro attire – and cheap prices. With its overwhelming amount of clothing, the shop is no doubt daunting, but thanks to its regular kilo-sales, the bargains you can get make it all worth the challenge. Castle House, Angel Street, Sheffield, S3 8LN www.thriftystore.co.uk

A NEW SHOP Selling a wide range of logo tees, men’s jackets and American sportswear, A New Shop is perfect for the stylish vintage man. Unlike the other vintage shops you can find in the city, A New Shop also offers an extensive collection of vinyl as well as a barbershop in the back. 25 Division Street, Sheffield, S1 4GE Tel: 0114 272 0234 www.anewshopsheffield.com

Student fundraisers net thousands for

Sheffield hospitals

The next generation of medical scientists have backed healthcare provision in the city, by adopting Sheffield Hospitals Charity as their cause for the last three years. The Biomedical Science Society (BMSSoc) organised everything from tandem skydives, to balls, to bakes sales and quizzes, to an eating competition, all to raise thousands of pounds for the charity. The money raised by the society - a committee of elected students in the Department of Biomedical Science at the University of Sheffield- will ensure patients continue to receive excellent care, while helping students to secure charity support in the future. Biomedical Science Student, Teresa Liew, aged 22, has been the charity officer for the society this year, overseeing and facilitating all of the fundraising events. Teresa said: "BMSSoc chose Sheffield Hospitals Charity as our adopted charity as we strongly believe in giving back to our community. "We have arranged small and large activities, but through promoting through social media, lecture shout-outs and word of mouth, we have been able to get hundreds of students involved in the fundraising. "During my year in office I had a really enjoyable time planning and organising various charity events and I got the opportunity to work with others from all levels, while contributing to the community. "I have now graduated and I am looking forward to my Postgraduate

Teresa Liew (far left), part of the Biomedical Science Society, has been raising money for Sheffield Hospitals Charity Medical Degree. This experience has been very meaningful to me and I will continue to fundraise when I can." The Biomedical Science Society has raised a total of ÂŁ2,300 this year through its fundraising efforts. In total, the group has raised a whopping ÂŁ8,951 for Sheffield Hospitals Charity. Isla Denoon, Fundraising Team Manager at Sheffield Hospital's Charity, said: "What a fantastic achievement by the Biomedical Science Society - we can't thank them enough for their support and all the efforts they have put into fundraising events over the last three years. "All the funds raised will help to ensure that patients in our city receive outstanding care." With your support, Sheffield Hospital's Charity can continue to do more to improve the experience of patients.
