estbourne was delighted with the number of Year 6 candidates who attended the annual Scholarship Examination Day back in January. They were delighted to see so many external applicants eager to secure a place in Westbourne Senior School. The children integrated well with Westbourne’s Year 6 children and it was clear that everyone had made some new friends by the end of the day. The Westbourne winners of the Year 6 Scholarship Exams/Test held in January were as follows:

• The Academic Award – Alan Charles • Music Award – Sam Jokhi • Headmaster’s Scholarship for exceptional abilities in Sport and Music – Harry Peckett • Performing Arts Scholarship for exceptional abilities in Music and Drama – Archie Renshaw

Sixth Form Scholarship Congratulations to Deputy Head Boy William Shahane, who has been awarded an academic scholarship to neighbouring Birkdale Sixth Form. Year 11 Post 16 Applications Well done to our Year 11 pupils. All of those who had applied to a state school sixth form have been given their first choice, on the condition that they achieve their GCSE predicted grades or better this summer. Other pupils who have applied to colleges or other schools have also been successful too.

Team Maths Challenge On 23 March a team of Year 8 and 9 mathematicians (Lily Lidster, Kiril Vinogradov, Jessica Leatherland and Sohail Manavi) went to the Team Maths Challenge Regional Finals in Bradford. The team gained a highly respectable sixth place out of a field of over 30 schools from across the region.

Westbourne young composers join forces with Music in the Round

Face the

MUSIC

From classical collaborations to performing at a much-loved venue, music plays a big part of school life.

A selection of talented Senior School musicians were given the chance to hear their own work played and recorded by world class professional musicians. The Senior School pupils had been working on their own compositions for several months and as part of the project, took part in a special workshop with the Sheffield Music Hub and Music in the Round – Sheffield’s own world famous Chamber Music Festival. The culmination of the project saw the students’ compositions performed and recorded by the professional musicians from Ensemble 360, the acclaimed professional musicians of Music in the Round. “The afternoon was inspiring and the pupils were given the chance to refine some of their ideas with help from the musicians,” said Marie Pritchett, Head of Senior School Music. “They also gained some valuable tips on how to write for specific instruments to take away and use in future compositions, as well as how to make their ideas clearer when writing out a score”. “The professionals were all very impressed at the standard of the compositions and it was fantastic to hear the world premier performances of 16 future composers.” The compositions were played to the audience at this year’s prize-winning celebrations at the Octagon.

Gig at the Leadmill Westbourne musicians once again headed for the Leadmill – the mainstay of the Sheffield live music scene. The Leadmill has seen some of the leading bands from across the country regularly playing at its venue; Pulp, The Killers and Arctic Monkeys are just a few and for one night only, Westbourne music makers took centre stage. The Samba Band brought the roof down and set the scene for many talented acts. Groups such as Cold Blood, Station Lane and a welcome return from the staff band Chalk Face, who along with a whole gamut of talented acts, rocked into the night. The talent on display and the confidence shown from their Year 5 to Year 11 performers was incredible. “Our acts showed the diversity of talent at Westbourne. What a great experience for the children

10

to be able to perform in a real band venue and at such an iconic location. I hope this will inspire the children and make them hungry for more,” said Mr Woodward, Head of Junior School Music at Westbourne.

Bugsy Malone “Someone once said, if it was raining brains Roxy Robinson wouldn’t even get wet. In all of New York they didn’t come much dumber than Roxy the Weasel. To be frank Roxy was a dope. Dumb as Roxy was, he could smell trouble like other people could smell gas. But he should never have taken that blind alley by the side of Perito’s Bakery.”

THE STAGE

DID YOU KNOW!

Westbourne boasts a state-of-the-art drama studio. Opening its curtains in 2015 this facility enables pupils to experience their drama lessons in true theatre style.

This was the opening scene of Westbourne’s 2017 production of Bugsy Malone at the Montgomery Theatre in March, with over 50 pupils from both senior and junior in the cast, or working backstage and front of house. It truly was a whole school production. Oliver Marshall made a great suave Bugsy, with Elliot Renshaw as the full-bellied Fat Sam and Archie Leahy as the sophisticated Dandy Dan, with his not very bright gang. In addition, Emma Verity was the beautiful Tallulah with Ailsa Gillespie as the trusting country girl looking for stardom in Hollywood. This feel-good production, with its catchy tunes and film sequence scenes, had the audience singing all the way home. The cast, chorus and crew all worked tremendously hard to once again put on a production which maintains the professional standard Westbourne has come to know.

Performing arts at Westbourne School continue to impress. Shiver me timbers… it’s Pirates Versus Mermaids! Ahoy there mi hearties and shiver mi timbers… a crazy colourful collection of pirates and mermaids created a bit of a splash at Westbourne School this summer. Children from Reception Class to Year 2 swashed, buckled and raised the Jolly Roger as they presented the nautical romp, ‘Pirates Versus Mermaids’. The fantastic high seas musical journey was filled with catch-of-the-day fresh songs and an adventurepacked script. “It was a high spirited performance with plenty of opportunity to raise a cutlass and swish a fishtail,” said drama teacher Sallianne Foster-Major. “And it proves that even our youngest children are showing some great theatrical talent!”

Extra-curricular trips encourage pupils to enjoy new experiences.

Hail Westbournius!

HORIZONS

During the summer term Year 4 set off on a Roman-themed mini break. During the first day they were welcomed to Brigantium (near York) – a large outdoor classroom cunningly disguised as a Roman fort of the 1st Century AD. The duty There are an abundance of centurion was on the extra-curricular trips on offer at Westbourne, lookout for new recruits including a language trip to and the children met the Cantabria, a sports tour to Lanzarote and a trip to required criteria. Africa in 2018. The classes (and teachers!) had a rigorous introduction to life in the Roman army. Equipped with their uniform of a helmet, spear and shield the new recruits learnt how a fort is built and laid out. This was followed by weapons training (using dummy weapons!), guard duty, craft work, and parade ground drill. The evening was spent at Helmsley Youth Hostel where the children enjoyed a Roman themed quiz, mosaic making and stories about ‘Rampaging Romans’. The next day saw the group travelling to the market town of Malton for a two-hour museum workshop. The children were fascinated to learn that an auxiliary garrison, Derventio, had existed underneath the town. ‘Real’ Roman artefacts owned by Lucius, a soldier based at the Roman fort were handled and investigated. Year 4 returned to school brimming with knowledge and elated from their experiences.

Austrian Ski Trip Spring term sprung off to an early start for some Westbournians, as they embarked upon another highly successful Westbourne ski trip. No fewer than 52 pupils, including one Year 11 participant, Sam Hall, having been on no fewer than seven school ski trips!, flew to Austria and to the beautiful resort of Wagrain in the Amade Region. It was an experienced Westbourne group, with even some of the younger age group children fitting this category. Over a dozen parents and Old Westbournians swelled the numbers and a superb atmosphere was generated by all. They experienced amazing conditions, with snow falling almost every day. Even in Austria, GCSEs were at the forefront of their minds as the slopes provided the perfect opportunity to assess two pupils, Lily and Kai, in their GCSE sport practical! As well as skiing and all the amazing experiences, they also enjoyed sledging on wooden sleds, plus a fun and informative quiz night before being treated to a special pizza night to end the week. A fantastic trip, with everyone already looking forward to the 2018 trip to Winter Park, Colorado, USA.

Samba Day

Westbourne Film Autumn Term 2016 saw the filming of a new school video, which is visible on the landing page of the school’s website. This short video shows a girl’s journey through the co-ed environment on offer at Westbourne School. Westbourne is delighted with the final version and extends a massive thank you to the children, parents and staff who were involved in the production both in front of and behind the camera. Particular thanks to our lead character, played by Isla Mirfin, Eleanor and Evie Reynolds and Abi Heywood.

Did you know? Westbourne was once a Boy’s Preparatory school? The first girl, Laura Bramall, joined Westbourne in 1997 and since then girls have gone from strength to strength at Westbourne in terms of numbers and in their achievements, both academic and personal.

20

Twenty Year 5 and 6 pupils joined over 250 children from across Sheffield at the Sheffield City Hall in June. Together, this amassed band created the colourful musical extravaganza that was Samba Day. This was a collaborative project between Sheffield Music Hub and ‘Samba in a Box’ led by the Sheffield Children’s University. After a big fun warm-up and practice time, the children performed in front of the 121st Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphy, before enjoying their picnic lunch in the sunshine. Resplendent in their brightly coloured costumes and banners the final performance took place in the afternoon in the form of a mass rhythmical display in Barkers Pool, creating a happy carnival atmosphere for shoppers and passers-by. A massive thank you to Westbourne drum teacher, Mr Dan Johnston, and Head of Junior School Music, Mr Michael Woodward for facilitating their involvement in the amazing day.

Steve and Helena Lelew were amazed at the results after they decided to lose weight with the help of Alevere Therapy at G&M Healthcare.

Slim yourself I

HAPPY!

f you are looking to transform your life and lose weight rapidly, choose the Alevere Therapy. Trying to lose weight can be a slog, especially in the early days when carrying those extra pounds can make exercise all the more challenging. That’s why Steve and Helena Lelew STEVE LELEW decided to get a head start, with the LOST Alevere Therapy at G&M Healthcare. Dr 3ST 2LB Grace and her team are on hand throughout the process, providing a friendly, supportive and professional service. “We’d lost weight in such a short space of time, and once we’d got down to our baseline weights it was easier to keep it up,” says Steve. “We now have much more energy and more motivation to exercise.” Steve had tried diets and slimming groups in the past, and even a similar weight loss treatment five years ago, but the weight had slowly crept back on.

22

“I’m approaching 60 now and one thing that really motivated me was a few years ago when I went to an event with my twin brother. He weighed a stone more than me and someone said, ‘Is that your older brother?’ It was then I realised that being heavier can make you look much older.” This time, Steve was more determined and committed than ever before. And doing the treatment and diet plan together with his wife, meant they were able to support each other to stay on track. “I didn’t like the idea of a gastric band, but I wanted something with quick results, that would keep the weight off long term.” “They do three things. First of all you have an ultrasound where they find and deal with those bits you can’t lose through exercise. Second, they use an LPG machine to give you a skin tightening treatment. They then give you vitamin supplements and instructions of what you can eat. “Our therapists Sarah and Leyanne have been really nice and helpful. They’ve been on the plan themselves and it was reassuring to

have regular check-ups once a week. “We also saw Dr Grace at regular intervals, who was very thorough and informative about the programme. We had lots of tests and she explained why each stage of the diet was important.” The whole process took 12 weeks, in which time, Steve had lost 3st 2lb and Helena had lost 2st. This meant Steve had gone down to 13st 2lb, whilst Helena was delighted to ditch her size 14 wardrobe in exchange for a slim size 8. Now at what Steve calls their ‘baseline weights’, managing their diet has become much easier. “I didn’t used to like vegetables, but after being weaned off the supplements, I actually craved them! Now we go to the supermarket and we know what a healthy trolley looks like, so it’s been a massive education too. “I used to see slim people and think ‘I

BEFORE

AFTER

want to look like that’ and now I do. Helena says she feels like a new person. I actually came home the other day and was surprised to find her boxing. We’ve been getting so many compliments – I feel younger!” And it’s not just their appearances and attitude to fitness that have changed. It’s improved their general health too. “We feel more positive. Our cholesterols and blood pressures are both down, which is amazing!” Despite being more motivated than ever to keep the pounds off, Steve says he still gets to give into temptation from time to time. “When I’ve been low and started creeping down to the fridge, Helena will stop me. Although you can get away with the odd treat and bounce back.” Looking back over his whole weight loss journey, would Steve recommend Alevere to other people? “As long as you stay committed and fully embrace all of their advice, it’s well worthwhile. It’s nice to know that G&M do other treatments too, but neither of us want to go back to our old lifestyles now!”

Double cricket victory at Orchard School On a sunny Friday in June, Westbourne’s U11 B team faced Hill House at Orchard School. Westbourne batted first and scored an impressive total of 298, with 40 runs coming in singles. The boys had been working hard in practice to develop their running between the wickets, so it was fantastic to see them transfer this into a competitive match. In reply, Westbourne restricted the hosts to 257 through some disciplined bowling and lots of energy in the field. This gave

Westbourne a win of 41 runs. It was one of the most complete performances I have seen from a junior side. Our batting, bowling and fielding were all executed to a high level and every player contributed to a fantastic win. Well done boys. The U10 A team then faced Orchard School. Orchard batted first and scored a competitive 257. In reply, Westbourne scored 287 runs giving us a win by 30 runs. In general the boys played well. We were a little slow to start but once we got into our stride, we started to execute our skills to the standards we set in the last match. Our batting in particular was strong, with many of the boys making clean contact with the ball to score many boundaries. Well done boys.

Rounders Win v Scarborough On Thursday 15 June our U15 girls made their debut against Scarborough College. The rounders fixture was hosted at Harrogate Cricket Club. It was a glorious day and the girls began the innings by fielding. It was very close in the first innings, both teams scoring six-and-a-half rounders. Westbourne then came into field and allowed Scarborough to score seven rounders. Yasmin Shaw made some great catches and the girls collectively worked hard to stop full rounders being scored. They then batted, eight players were out after 25 balls, leaving Yasmin Shaw remaining. Westbourne had seven rounders at this point and needed half to win. Yasmin came into bat, ‘slogged’ the ball and made it to second post-resulting in a win for the team! 13-and-a-half to 14!

Lacrosse masterclass from Mr Glover As part of Westbourne’s commitment to offering a varied and high quality range of sporting activities, Lacrosse was introduced as an after school club. And who better to lead this exciting sport than Lacrosse gold medal winner, Westbourne’s Mr Glover? Thanks to his skill and passion for the sport, this club was very well received by all participants. Mr Glover proudly returned from Budapest in Hungary last summer with a gold medal in the men’s Lacrosse European Championship. As assistant coach, his England team beat Germany, Latvia, Czech Republic, Italy and Hungary to win their group. They then went on to beat Switzerland in the quarter-final, Finland in the semi-final and Israel in the final, winning 7-6. This was an outstanding result to play eight matches unbeaten. Wales and Scotland also competed coming fourth and eighth respectively. Mr Glover has played Lacrosse since he was 11 years old – he is an inspiration to all of us! “I was extremely excited to introduce Westbourne children to the sport of lacrosse. Those who attended the sessions really enjoyed the speed and dynamic nature of the game whilst learning some challenging new skills and having fun. I am really looking forward to running more sessions in the future and providing another opportunity for Westbourne pupils to pursue success and enjoyment through sport.

Guiseley Vixens are delighted to welcome to the club, Old Westbournian Jess Heald. Jess joined the Vixens in June from Super League outfit Sheffield FC and boasts an impressive CV. Jess played at Sheffield for over a decade and in that time won the Reserves League Cup final, finished runners-up in the Youth FA Cup final losing eventually to Arsenal, contributed towards the first team winning the FAWPL Northern title in 2014/15 and has since made her Super League debut. Upon leaving Sheffield, Jess has been a highly sought after player, with no shortage of offers on the table. She settled on Guiseley in the end commenting: “I’m excited about the coming season as I want to start a new chapter after playing for Sheffield FC for 12 years. “I think Guiseley is a perfect match and I’m so prepared to invest my all into the club as I share the same vision and ambition as the club, staff and players around me.” Manager Glen Preston also commented: “Jess is a quality addition but coming from Sheffield FC you’d expect nothing less. “She’s been educated by the likes of Helen Mitchell and Zoe Johnson so you know she has lots of pedigree and that’s what we’ve seen of her over the last year or so. “Overall I think she will bring great versatility to the side, something we really value. She’s quick, strong and technically gifted. We saw in the trials her movement was exceptional off the ball and just as importantly I’ve seen that the players have really taken to her quickly. “It feels she’s been part of the club for years. So yes, we are chuffed to have her on board and I’m sure she’s going to make a great impression.”

Sporting success

Super 8 Girls’ Football team The Westbourne U14 Girls five-a-side football team started their campaign in the Sheffield Federation for Schools Sport (SFSS) league back in October at Tapton School. The culmination of this league was the top eight teams (out of 19 across Sheffield) playing in a knockout competition in March to determine the overall winners. Westbourne confirmed their participation in the “Super 8” competition in February by coming fifth in the league. The ‘Super 8’ comprised of Tapton A and B, Bradfield, Sheffield Girls High School, Silverdale, Westbourne, Meadowhead and Notre Dame. In Westbourne’s first match they were pitted against Silverdale School. The winners would contest for 1st4th place and the losers would battle for 5th-8th spot. The game was a really tight affair but Westbourne took an early lead through captain Hannah Richards, only to have their slender lead cancelled out with five minutes to go. Substitute Isabel Hardcastle then broke through on goal with only seconds remaining to score a dramatic late winner. A great win! Westbourne then moved on to play the hosts Tapton, unfortunately succumbing to a 1-0 defeat, despite the best efforts of the girls who battled courageously throughout. This meant one final game to determine the 3rd/4th playoff against Meadowhead School. Hannah Richards scored the opening goal following a lovely through ball pass from Lola Fowler. Unfortunately, Westbourne conceded with a couple of minutes to go to eventually draw 1-1. It was decided mutually between the teachers that both schools should be positioned joint third, a placing that the girls thoroughly deserved for their efforts and quality throughout the season. Well done! Players of the Day: Hannah Richards and Lola Fowler

Continuing on from their early success at Westbourne, Old Westbournian‘s Sam Wolstenholme and Maddie Pearce (class of 2004) have excelled in their sporting achievements. Having both achieved the top sports award at Westbourne at 11, they have also just received the Outstanding Sportsman award at Oakham School at 18. Sam, a multi-talented sportsman, has been offered a contract at Leicestershire Cricket Academy, along with a two-year contract at Leeds Carnegie to play rugby. Having represented Yorkshire for crosscountry running, Maddie has gone on to playing hockey for England – U16 and U18 (already achieving 27 international caps). They both attribute Westbourne for the wonderful opportunities they were offered from an early age. Both Maddie and Sam, having just finished A-Levels, are planning on continuing their studies and sporting endeavours at Loughborough University.

lenheim Park Estates have moved to their new prestigious offices on Carter Knowle Road.

They have created a modern industrial look to their office space, which provides a wonderful environment to work and meet with clients. A key focus of the design was the creation of a large open space with a range of rooms for retreat and casual/formal meetings. The design brief also required a large board room, private offices and a media suite as well as staff facilities and a kitchen/lounge area. The concept was to create a working environment, which would be conducive to open communication with all areas designed to interconnect with the use of glazed partition walls and doors to create zoned areas. The design meets all the prerequisites for an open and accepting working culture that gives clients and employees the feeling of a home away from home. The interior design emphasises the agency’s open-minded thinking and working principles, as well as uniting the various departments across the business. Design, development, implementation and finishings were carried out by Blenheim Park Developments and MIS Architectural Aluminium were responsible for the internal and external glazing.
