WS Home The Home Team: managing director Russell Short, right, with Darren Aspen and Helen Cunningham
Words: Phoebe Seymour
Quick and efficient Home Team’s tried and tested, energyconscious approach is proving to be a success.
A
nyone who has heard horror stories of cowboy trades people will know finding a company you can trust to complete work in your home can be tricky. But if a quick and efficient service, fair prices and excellent customer service are top of your list, then Home Team in Crookes are the company for you This boiler, installation and service specialist originally began as a means for Property Partners estate agents in Crookes to complete all repairs and fittings in-house. But the owners saw a gap in the market for reliable trades people and, five years ago, Home Team was introduced to the public. With three managing directors, all with their own expertise, the business thrives in every aspect. Darren Aspden has been a heating engineer for 27 years and completes all surveying, Helen Cunningham is a customer service specialist and Russell Short
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
has worked in the property and construction industry for over 14 years. Their team of local Gas Safe registered representatives and engineers are always onhand and close by at any time and cover South Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and the Peak District. And, if you do have an emergency, it’s great to know a member of their friendly team is just a phone call away, 24 hours a day. As accredited installers for Worcester Bosch, Ideal and ATAG their helpful boiler engineers and experts can advise whether your existing boiler needs repairing, or whether a new boiler installation might be a more suitable option. They have years of experience installing and repairing boilers from all the top manufacturers and can fit your new boiler within 24 hours, so you won’t be cold or without hot water for too long. If you are in need of a new boiler but are concerned about the cost, Home Team can help with that too. They understand buying a new boiler can be expensive, and so offer their customers the option of spreading the cost through a range of boiler finance deals. Home Team work in conjunction with TradeHelp, who are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which means there is more flexibility with affordable monthly repayments. Plans start from as little as £11.99 per month. Alternatively, you could opt for a Green Deal Finance Plan – a great way of spreading the cost without taking out a loan
yourself because the money owed is paid back through your electricity bill. As well as replacement boilers, heating repairs, servicing and minor plumbing jobs, Home Team is also at the forefront of the green technology industry and can install renewable technology (also called micro generation and low-carbon technology) into your home to generate your own renewable energy. Using renewable energy not only means making use of secure and local resources and helping to reduce the production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, but also reducing your energy bills – in some cases you can generate income by selling your surplus energy back to your energy provider. With Home Team you are guaranteed a quick, efficient and quality service from start to finish. For a free no obligation quote, call on 0114 438 1813 or visit www.hometeam.co.uk for more details. Classic, Urban or Pure - which are you? The world is full of products with a superďŹ cial attraction that rapidly fades. Good design that lasts for decades is only created when something is well thought out and well made - providing a timeless, elegant look. SieMatic is 2016 winner of one of the most prestigious design competitions in the world - the German Design Council’s coveted Gold Award, and has earned its place in the history of product design. And its stunning collections across Classic, Urban and Pure kitchen concepts are there to be tailored exquisitely to the lifestyle, space and atmosphere you seek.
016 - 017 WSide Apr16 16/03/2016 11:50 Page 2
The kitchen long ago ceased to be the nondescript setting for laborious tasks and has instead become the expression of individual lifestyle, where practicality meets sensuality. It should be a place to enjoy not just cooking but all of life, the heart of the home.
The SieMatic collection opens up a myriad of creative options, with room concepts integrating the functions of the kitchen with architecture, perfectly and unobtrusively. The precision design brings clear lines, generous surfaces, balance, harmony and longevity.
From Classic to Urban to Pure minimalist simplicity, SieMatic creates completely unique spaces.

WS Property You have been really good with the sale of our mum’s property. You have helped make a difficult time run smoothly with your support. Many thanks. Mr & Mrs R, S17
You were amazing Nicola, and I will always remember how you helped us out! Mr L, S11
Thank you for all the various advice you gave me throughout the buying process – still a bit shocked I now actually own it! Anyway, your help has been much appreciated. E, S6
Thank you for all the hard work you have put into our house sale. You have kept us up to date throughout and we really have appreciated it. Lizzie, you have been amazing and have been so helpful through what has been a difficult house sale! Mr & Mrs H, S10
We wanted to thank everyone for their help and involvement in selling our property. We could not fault the professionalism and genuinely helpful contact we received throughout. We have, and continue to, speak only positively about our experience with Spencers. Mr & Mrs H, S10
It was really refreshing to feel that you had our interests as buyers held as importantly as those of your clients. We’ve really appreciated and valued all of your support. Mrs M, S8
I’m pleased I chose Spencers to sell my house. They handled things really well and it was good to have a friendly voice on the end of the phone on the stressful days. I’ll definitely go back to them if I move on. Ms W, S11
Just a short note to say thanks to you and your team (with particular mention to Nicola) for all the professionalism you have shown during the recent sale of my house. It was appreciated that at times circumstances made it more problematic than it needed to be, and yet you still managed to achieve a price well above my expectations. I shall certainly recommend your office to others and indeed shall employ your services again when my current abode is ready to be marketed. Mr H, S11
Lizzie, we couldn’t have managed both sales without you. You have been fantastically helpful, in fact you’re a star! Thank you for everything. Mr & Mrs P, S10
We cannot thank you enough for your professionalism, cooperation and help during our application. Mr I, tenant S11
Lots of my friends have had very different experiences with their property purchases and all tell me how lucky we have been that ours went so smoothly. I point out that luck had nothing to do with it, rather the good sense we had asking Spencers to help us sell our home. Mr W, S7
018 - 019 WSide Apr16_Layout 1 18/03/2016 11:44 Page 2
My decision to go with Spencers was based on a number of factors, but the key one was theirapproach. They didn’t give me the hard sell, it was informal but professional, honest and open. Plus, unlike the others agents I met with, they didn’t spend half the time telling me what the other agents don’t offer! Mr W, landlord S1
I would like to convey my sincere gratitude at the way you and the rest of the team at Spencers looked after us during our sale and purchase. Ever courteous and professional, you put us at ease and kept us fully informed and up-to-date with goings on. From start to finish, the service was excellent and I have told many people this. Mr M, S10
Just want to say how happy I am with the level of service I’m getting from you guys. Everyone has been really efficient, friendly and helpful. Thank you! Ms H, S7
I wanted to say a massive thank you again for all your help getting me to where I am. I’m really happy here and it wouldn’t have happened without your expertise and support. Tenant, S11
Thanks so much for sending through the monthly newsletter; we always enjoy reading it and are so pleased you are doing well. Mrs A, S11
Re: your blog. Apart from my bank statement, that is far and away the most interesting thing I have read on the internet this week! Local solicitor
To be honest I thought that you were a bit slack (lol). It took all of an hour to rent this out! Landlord, S10
Hooray! We finally did it. Thank you so much for all your help and hard work. Without your tenacity I think I would have given up. Mr T, S10
Thank you very much for handling the sale of our house. Lizzie without you we are sure this would never have happened, thank you for all of your persistence and patience. Mr & Mrs M, S11
Thank you so much to Spencers Estate Agents. We have just completed on the sale of our house and it has all gone so smoothly, we just can’t believe it. We will be telling all of our friends about you and about the wonderful gesture of sending out those delicious cakes on the day we moved! Ms S, S10
Thank you so much for all your help. I always had bad things to say about estate agents, until now! You have been wonderful. Mrs K, S10

Let the sun shine in… Glittery metallics and bold colours will lighten the mood – whatever the weather.
D
espite those pesky April showers, the sun is finally shining and the days are getting longer, so why not take inspiration from our varied climate with these weather-related accessories? Less is more, so focus on one dramatic sunshine-themed piece or simply add yellow and gold accessories – metallics are on trend this year, so you can certainly
incorporate the two this season. Or if you’d rather embrace your inner child, stick to bold colours and brighten up your home and garden with bursts of rainbow shades or fun cloud and raindrop motifs. So whether you are a dedicated follower of fashion or just want to add some playful accessories to a dull home, these items will certainly do the trick this spring.
This Scandi-inspired cushion will look great in a kid’s bedroom or will inject some fun into a boring sofa. £15 from www.made.com.

He started in the roofing industry in the late seventies working for his father Maurice's company, Dobson and Greaves, of Gleadless, Sheffield. Dobson Roofing Services was founded in 1982 by Maurice and his two sons, Paul and Rikki. Maurice ran the company until 1990 when he retired and Rikki became the manager director. Located at 109-111 Chesterfield Road, Dronfield, the company is ideally placed to serve the people of Sheffield, North Derbyshire and Hope Valley. Their services include flat roofing membranes, including EPDM and high tensile roofing felts, slating and tiling, natural stone slating, UPVC fascia and soffits, all types of guttering timber, PVC and aluminium, and Velux roof lights and roof joinery. Dobson Roofing has worked on many memorable and historical venues included reroofing of the towers at Howden and Derwent Dams, famous for the Dambusters’ flyovers, and The Roundhouse Railway Engine Sheds at Barrowhill in Chesterfield, which is one of the last working rail turntables in Britain and is now famous for hosting concerts by the likes of Jools Holland and Paul Weller. They also completely re-roofed the Chesterfield Bus Depot all the way back in 1983, including all new metal decking and insulation. The roof has remained 100 per cent waterproof and has outlasted its ten-

year guarantee by 23 years. As well as these projects, Dobson Roofing has re-roofed over 2,000 domestic properties, 40 schools, ten university buildings and five hospitals. Recent contracts include the Lyric Theatre in Dinnington for Rotherham Council and Greendale Court in Dronfield for Rykneld Homes. They offer a free advisory and estimates service and a full detailed report to customers. Their guarantees range from ten to 20 years. The third generation of Dobson's have now entered into the family business including Rikki’s son Ross and daughter Georgina, who have been working for the company since leaving school. Ross deals with site visits and surveys along with being National Examination Board in Occupational
Safety and Health (NEBOSH) qualified in health and safety. Georgina handles the IT side of the business. Rikki says: “The vast knowledge my father acquired during his 50 years in the roofing industry has been passed on from father to son. This knowledge and experience has also been shared with our staff, many of whom have worked for the company for over 20 years. Over the last 30 years there has been a significant improvement in the quality of materials used in the roofing industry and this, alongside improvements in health and safety, as well as the higher skill levels of roofing operatives, have helped do away with cowboy builders and roofers who have plagued our industry for so long. So make sure your roofing contractor is a member of National Federation of Roofing Contractors. “I have enjoyed my career in roofing over the last 38 years and the improvements that have been made. The roofing industry stood still for so long; methods and styles didn't change much from the 1900s to the 1970s. Technology finally caught up, however many of the traditional methods in roofing remain the same, and rightly so. “We at Dobson Roofing pride ourselves on doing a good job at a fair price.” For further information, check out the company’s website www.dobsonroofingservices.co.uk.

or many households, there comes a time when your home becomes a bit of a squeeze. Whether it’s growing children filling up the house or an expanding business where you could do with a home office to keep on top of things, an extension is a great way of enjoying additional space without the hassle and stress of moving altogether. If you are planning to extend your property it is so important to get the design right the first time. Planning departments no longer offer pre-application advice to discuss your proposal, so whatever you submit is what gets considered and, if planning guidelines are not followed your proposal risks being rejected. House Extension Design Ltd offer pre-application advice as standard. Owner Francis Collumbine began his career working in a drawing office with Qualter Hall and Co Ltd as a detail and design draughtsman while studying building construction at Shirecliffe College and Sheffield Hallam University. He established his own company in 1984 A recent completed and now has over 35 years’ experience extension in the industry, He has completed more than 3,500 successful planning and building regulation applications in Sheffield and Derbyshire. The company makes multiple planning and building regulations applications each week in Sheffield and the surrounding areas, and enjoys a 99 per cent success rate. Francis can advise you on the best way to plan and extend your home, making sure that you have considered all options before drawing up your final proposal, which is then presented to the local authority on your behalf. It makes sense to obtain the right advice before deciding to extend your house to make sure all elements have been considered, which will give you the best chance of getting it right first time, saving you valuable time and money. With House Extension Design Ltd all clients can be assured of receiving expert advice, and a professional service. Call Francis today on 0114 268 7159 to find out how he can help.

On the death of the surviving spouse, the assets in the estate will pass to their children. The first spouse’s children would not be entitled to receive anything from their step parent.
:KDW KDSSHQV LI \RX GRQ·W KDYH D :LOO" Some common misconceptions about the law in the event of death are often one of the reasons that people pass away without leaving a Will (intestate). Lindsey Rawson, Partner at Howells Solicitors provides a couple of examples below, so if you find you could be in one of these situations, you should consider making a Will to protect your assets and the people you love. •
•
There is no definition of common law husband and wife. Unmarried couples, regardless of the time spent living together, are not automatically entitled to any part of their partners estate. So for example, if a couple cohabits for 25 years and have children, without a Will in place, the children are entitled to the deceased’s estate. The surviving partner would not receive anything. If you and your partner both have children from previous relationships but you do not make a Will, your children may end up losing out of your estate. For example, a married couple with children from previous relationships don’t make

THE GARDEN GURUS Alan Titchmarsh says… get your soil up to scratch Your garden soil is likely to be in poor condition right now, after the wet winter has washed away many of its nutrients. So one of the very first jobs to do, is to get the soil up to scratch – then it can nurture all your plants, just as they’re starting to grow. Feed beds and borders with any good general fertiliser such as blood, fish and bone or another organic alternative. Sprinkle it on by hand all over the soil, applying it underneath shrubs and round the base of climbers, perennials and clumps of bulbs. Trickle a line of fertiliser along the base of all your hedges – they’ll be feeling fairly starved after this winter and spring is the perfect time to feed them. Fruit trees, bushes and canes also benefit from a good start-of-the-season feed, so use the same general fertiliser for those too. But since they need extra potash to encourage flowering and fruiting, also give them sulphate of potash (at half an ounce per square yard). This same “cocktail” is a good late-spring feed for clematis, which is a greedy plant and also appreciates extra potash.

Carol Klein says… sow your seeds Outdoors, self-sown seedlings are beginning to peep out in beds and borders, but the greenhouse is heaving with life. Providing it has been stored in a cool, dry place and out of bright sunlight, most seed is raring to go. Any pot or recycled container will do for your sowing as long as it has drainage holes (imperative) and a reasonable depth (at least 5cm). What are we sowing? Lots of veg. Fill containers liberally with peat-free seed compost and firm gently to produce a level surface just below the rim of the pot or tray. Sprinkle small seeds on the surface of the compost by pinching with thumb and forefinger or tapping from your palm; it doesn't matter how you do it as long as the seed is sown finely. The biggest cause of death in seedlings is from damping off, a fungal disease that makes them collapse. And the main reason for damping off is sowing too thickly. Cover seed with a layer of sharp grit, emulating what would happen in nature. The grit helps stop the seed being washed away yet retains moisture underneath and provides drainage around the shoots. If seedlings are there for any length of time, grit also deters weeds and liverwort from taking hold.
Monty Don says… select seasonal flowers After the first delicate bulbs of early spring and the pastel flush of yellow that follows with daffodils, tulips bring colour like a carnival to the garden. The earliest will start flowering at the beginning of April, but the end of the month and well into May is their prime season. Before choosing your bulbs, it is worth remembering where tulips come from so that the ground can be properly prepared. They mainly originate from an area that now occupies Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Armenia, where they grow on shale slopes. This means they have very sharp drainage so they never sit in the wet. Give them as much sun as you have and – most importantly – do whatever you can to improve the drainage. If you have very wet, cold soil, it is a good idea to grow new bulbs in containers. The bulbs can then be lifted in due course and the best surviving bulbs from the containers planted into the borders. Not all tulips flower at the same time. It is much easier to plant tulips of the same type and group such as lily-flowered, triumph or parrot tulips together.

THE HOME HEROES Aggie Mackenzie says… spring clean Start with a small room so you won't feel daunted. Make a list of what you have, and what you no longer need. Divide everything into categories, such as paper, gadgets, clothes, books. Take out everything that needs to be cleaned – and I mean everything, including the curtains. If you haven't used something for more than a year, out it goes. If it holds very dear memories, start a memory box. Divide everything into: things that are useless and have to be thrown away; items that can be recycled; and things you can give to friends. Then start assembling your piles. Once you've collected everything, act immediately – go to the tip, the charity shop or the recycling depot. Bring in a basin of hot, soapy water. Clean those ledges. Clean windows until they shine. Dust the lamp. Get the vacuum attachment and clean the dark corners. This takes time – don't expect to do more than two rooms a day.
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen says… substance before style Many people place maintenance way down their list of property essentials, preferring to spend money on more immediately glamorous items, but there's no point in buying a costly, luxurious carpet or rug for your bedroom, if two months later a leak caused by faulty roof tiles means you have to replace it. There is nothing stylish about damp. Preventive care is the best form of maintenance - it's the least intrusive and, in the end, it's the least expensive. Get the basics right - and then you can have fun! The great irony is that if most of us spent a little time and money on some simple maintenance, in the long run we'd probably have more to spend on the, admittedly, exciting creative and imaginative aspects of home ownership.
Kelly Hoppen says… lighten up Accessories and décor, or home jewellery as I like to call it, provide those little accents that add beauty and personality to a home. Build a collection of staple pieces, such as coral and vases, which can conveniently be changed with the seasons. Choose your shades carefully – the colours and themes used in your home can have a great impact. I am notorious for my love of taupe – I use it so much because it’s a gorgeous shade that always provides a chic, timeless look. Lighting is crucial and has such a big impact on a room. For an affordable and unique touch, place uplighters by the edges of your curtains, which will light up the ceiling.

Container gardening can enhance your outdoor space whatever the season with clever use of perennials, evergreens, bulbs, shrubs and architectural plants. So whatever you have in mind, call Christine.
Howells Solicitors
My Fathers Heart
Buying or selling a house can be a very exciting time, but not without its stresses. Whilst you would be forgiven for thinking most law firms are alike, Bonita Wolfenden (pictured) from Howells Solicitors, knows this isn’t the case: “As one of the most valuable purchases you are likely to make, you should choose a solicitor that you can trust to provide a professional, fast and high quality service,” she says. Look for a firm that is CQS accredited (The Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme) to ensure you receive the best advice and service. You don’t have to choose the solicitor your estate agent suggests. Pick a firm that is right for you and request quotes in writing, checking if there are any additional charges. Whether you’re buying or selling a property, remortgaging or completing a transfer of property, Howells provides the key to a stress-free transaction.

Timber windows are a popular choice for many homeowners because of the authentic finish, but as always, luxury comes with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, for those looking for style on an affordable budget, there is a product that has been designed to replicate the popular 19th century flush sash timber window – Residence 9. Andy Holmes, owner of Window Spec, says: “Many of my customers were requesting timber windows but were put off by the price. Bakewell
A
s well as being a market town with a thriving life of its own, Bakewell’s winning blend of beautiful scenery, attractive courtyards and independent shops, cafes and restaurants makes it a popular destination for visitors from close to home and further afield. Whether they come to shop, dine or feed the ducks, Bakewell is always buzzing with life. The setting on the River Wye, with the grand spire of All Saints Church watching over
the ancient five-arched bridge, makes Bakewell one of the most photographed and painted spots in the Peak District National Park. Bakewell’s impressive history remains unscathed with several beautifully preserved buildings including the market hall, the old town hall and the alms houses, but while respect is paid to the past, the town has a vibrantly modern outlook. While some rural tourist hot spots are packed at weekends and eerily quiet during
the week, Bakewell is rather different. Market day is Monday and is always busy while farmers markets, held in the modern Agricultural Business Centre on the last Saturday of the month, always attract a healthy crowd. Then of course there are the special events such as the annual Bakewell Show which attracts thousands of visitors every August, carnival week, the well dressing and the arts festival.
The Bakewell Tart Shop & Coffee House Open from 8.30am seven days a week serving breakfast and lunch, afternoon teas, traditional home-cooked food and cakes and Bakewell Tart. Eat in or takeaway. Outdoor courtyard for warmer months. Free wifi. Three-bedroom holiday apartment to rent.

Walk the walk Redbrik sold on new marketing technology.
W
hen it comes to expertly marketing property, Redbrik Estate Agency, one of the region’s leading independent sales and lettings agents, is the best in the business. Properties don’t sell themselves and Redbrik’s knowledge, service and presentation get the results vendors and landlords deserve. The company prides itself on its innovative marketing approach and they always want to ensure that every property on their books looks its absolute best. Redbrik’s latest addition to its comprehensive and bespoke marketing package is set to change the future of estate agency marketing. Redbrik recently launched ‘3D Walkthrough’ at an event which was held at the Apple Store in Meadowhall. The 3D Walkthrough is an online experience that lets home movers explore a property and see it from every angle. It allows users to get a completely unique sense for the place with a ‘dolls house’ view. It is the most realistic and immersive way to experience a property online.
Redbrik is the first estate agent in the north of England to be offering this cutting edge technology to their clients. Since opening their first branch in Chesterfield in 2013, Redbrik has enjoyed continual growth and, in addition to branches in Millhouses and Crystal Peaks, they have recently opened a second substantially bigger office in Glumangate in Chesterfield. Redbrik also further expanded their business last year by moving into the lettings sector.Their dedicated lettings service is now providing landlords and tenants with an experienced team that offers a personalised approach, outstanding customer service, the very best in marketing, stunning photography, and skilled negotiation as well as excellent communication between all parties. Michael Parry, director at Redbrik Estate Agency, said: “As a business we always like to be ahead of the game and deliver new and innovative products and services for our clients. “The 3D Walkthrough is an amazing piece of technology and we feel it will revolutionise the way properties are marketed. This is the best thing in estate agency marketing in the

world right now and we are delighted to be bringing it to Sheffield, Chesterfield and North Derbyshire. “The 3D images that are produced are so good, we genuinely believe that they make every home look its absolute best. Outstanding marketing ensures that we can get vendors the best possible price for their property and the 3D Walkthrough has certainly taken our marketing package to another level. “We initially purchased the camera to market our sales properties, however it is a fantastic tool for the lettings side of our business. It will allow landlords to market their property superbly without disturbing tenants and also acts as an amazing inventory because the detail of the property is there for all to see. “The feedback from vendors and landlords has been phenomenal – the images the camera produces certainly have the wow factor and we are very much looking forward to seeing more great reactions from vendors as we introduce the camera as standard within our marketing package.” To celebrate the launch of the 3D Walkthrough, Redbrik is currently offering Westside readers the opportunity to experience the new technology for free when instructing Redbrik to sell.Vendors need to quote ‘Westside Redbrik 3D’ when booking a valuation in order to qualify for the offer. ‘PENSIONS PENSIONS PENSIONS – READ ALL ABOUT IT, no matter where you look, if you turn on the telly, pick up a paper, listen to the radio, it seems everyone is talking about Pensions !! What has suddenly made boring old Pensions a Hot Topic? Asks Phil Smith Director of Hamnett Wealth Management’ The answer is Pensions have been on George Osbourne’s hit list for a while now. Last year he announced a once in a generation overhaul of Pensions, this significant change allows people much greater flexibility in how they draw money from their Pension pot. More recently he has been looking at tinkering with the tax benefits of Pensions, whilst also looking to extend the age we can access our state Pension to 70 and beyond. It’s a complex area, Pension legislation loves its special titles! There is the annual allowance, lifetime allowance, tapered annual allowance, safeguarded benefits, Pension commencement lump sum, Pension input periods, annuities, flexi access drawdown, capped drawdown etc. the list goes on and on. For those of you who are trying to make the most of the valuable tax benefits available when using Pensions, or if you are approaching the time that you may want to access some of your Pension pot, it’s a bit of a minefield. Expensive mistakes can be easily made if the wrong decisions are made. If you are struggling to understand your Pension and your options, don’t worry, specialist advice is on hand here at Hamnett Wealth management. We offer truly independent and qualified Pensions advice to our clients. You have ‘peace of mind’ knowing that our advice is fully regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Put simply, we know what we are talking about. If you would like to discuss your Pension planning, or review your Pensions please call Phil Smith on 0114 2353500. We offer an initial assessment at no cost and without obligation (you need to know if and how we can help you before moving forward). Come and have chat over a cuppa and we can help you on the way to a better financial future.

WS Funerals
A fitting tribute With the help of W Simpson & Son, a funeral can be a comforting and truly personal way to say goodbye.

unerals are changing – and people are taking matters into their own hands. While religion and family tradition have dictated the order of events for centuries, the way we say farewell to loved ones today is changing dramatically. We still want to be respectful of course, but a break with the old ways is allowing a shift in focus to more personalised memorial services, where a celebration of the life of the recently departed is the main aim of the service. Was the person concerned passionate about music, sport or travel? Whatever drove them in life can be celebrated and factored into the funeral. At the heart of this revolution is the preplanned service. From traditional to horse-

drawn carriages and woodland burials, matching the send-off to the individual is the challenge facing the modern funeral director. There are also practical benefits. Preplanning a funeral removes the burden of decision making from your loved ones and also protects them from rising costs. One local company that truly appreciates the importance of guiding their clients through such difficult times is W Simpson and Son, a family-owned independent funeral directors that can call on three generations of expertise stretching back over more than 80 years. William Simpson started the business in 1929 and was followed by his son Stan and now grandson Tony, with the support of manager Tracy Neil and assistant manager Darran Barlow. Facing up to the death of a loved one will never be a happy occasion – but with the help of experienced, forward-thinking funeral directors, the final send-off can be a comforting and truly personal way to say goodbye. here’s no point stepping out onto the street in a sharp suit, only to finish it off with a cheap pair of shoes bulging at the sides and splitting at the seams. Very few items possess the same sartorial power that shoes do. Unlike, other accessories like cufflinks or a tie, a great pair completes an outfit, pulls the whole look together, and as such should take pride and place in every man’s wardrobe. And it’s shoes – handsome, comfortable and durable men’s shoes – that are the ‘sole’ of Charles Brooks’ business, if you’ll excuse the pun. An expert cobbler with over 50 years’ experience, Charles opened his first shop in 1972 after visiting his father at Darnall’s Coombes shoe repair factory as a youngster. A well-heeled gentleman himself, he understands that great shoes are worth investing in, so only the finest handmade footwear occupies the shelves of his Fulwood Road store. Loake, Barker and Tricker’s are among this select group of specialist designers, all of which are committed to using traditional time-honoured English skills in their shoemaking. There are some 200 operations involved

Likewise, Barker, which produces over 200,000 pairs of hand-lasted sewn shoes annually, and Tricker’s shoes are carefully crafted by a team of master craftsmen to withstand years of wear. The shoes are handstitched and fitted with a special cork layer beneath the inner sole, which allows feet to breathe. A few decades ago, most of the shoes that men in this country bought were made in Northampton. But now only a few

specialist shoemakers remain; the rest have gone abroad where production is cheaper. “Mass produced shoes are not made to last,” says Charles. “They are glued together, and the plastic soles are finished with only a thin layer of leather, consequently they start to fall apart within a few months of wear. “Invest in a properly made pair of shoes and look after them, they can last anything up to ten years. They get better the more you wear them; some of my customers have been wearing the same pair for decades.” It is Charles’ meticulous eye for detail and passion for craftsmanship that has allowed him to cultivate a loyal clientele of customers. “We all call these 30-year shoes,” he says pointing to a beautiful, shiny pair of tan Tricker’s. “My customers are still bringing their first pair back three decades later to be repaired.” Charles and his expert team of cobblers offer shoe and leather repairs, shoe care products, key cutting, and have a range of wallets and briefcases for sale. They can also fix broken zips, and fit new watch batteries and watch straps. ‘Why your back pain doesn’t improve’.
We carry one of the largest Designer suit collections in the Country
F
red, a 55 year-old computer worker, presented with low back pain that had given him problems for over 20 years. In the last six months, his pain had become constant and scans had indicated he had a bulging disc and degenerative joint changes in his spine. Medication was not helping and the side effects were making the condition worse. He was unable to go to work and feared he would never be able to play with his grandchildren again. Psychologically, he had low mood and was unable to sleep. This is a common scenario seen in patients at the Hallamshire physiotherapy clinic. The balance between how you are using your spine and, more importantly, what you think is happening in your spine is crucial to helping people. The vicious cycle the pain produces, leading to poor sleep and negative thought processes about the future, exacerbates the pain experience and, naturally, we avoid normal activities and rest for prolonged periods of time. Fred only improved once he was placed at the centre of the rehabilitation process. It was explained to him that over 70 per cent
“…I no longer feel that treatment is being ‘done to me’ but I am at the centre of a partnership that is making sense and getting the results I didn’t think were possible.” of people over the age of 50 who have never experienced pain in the back will show bulging discs and degenerative joints on scans – this is a normal finding. Our spine changes as we get older but this is perfectly normal and should not condemn people to a lifetime of pain. With this knowledge, and changing how Fred used his lower back, he started to change. His sleep improved and he slowly started to reduce his painkillers. It was identified that his main problem was sitting for up to eight hours a day and avoiding movement for fear of causing more pain. Improving people’s pain and function is much easier when they are not in fear of movement. The spine is incredibly robust and with a thorough assessment most people can be helped. Fred improved within four weeks and was grateful to the different approach that the Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic employs. Rehabilitation has to be driven by research and not outmoded beliefs about our spines. Steve Hodgson PhD Director Hallamshire Physioytherapy Clinic Tel: 0114 2671223 www.hallamshirephysiotherapy.com

Welcome to the House of Fun Musical Madness took over at Birkdale School with three outstanding performances of the Musical Our House. Based around the music of legendary eighties band Madness, the story is based around a lad from Camden whose life can take two paths – one being the right one and the other wrong. Performed on Birkdale’s own stage, parents, staff, pupils and friends enjoyed a trip down memory lane with classic songs such as Baggy Trousers, My Girl and Our House to name but a few. Everyone joined in, clapping along and cheering the exuberance and performance skills of the cast and musicians.

Anselm’s since Year 3, has not only been awarded a music scholarship for Malvern College but has also been offered a full academic scholarship too. For his music scholarship, Shea had to demonstrate his talents on more than two instruments and also demonstrate an indepth knowledge and understanding of musical theory. Will Unsworth has been offered an art scholarship to Shrewsbury School through an examination day where he had to demonstrate his skill, creativity and potential. Harriet Nieper won a drama scholarship to Repton School, demonstrating not only her natural abilities and talent but also the hard work that she has put in over the years. Max Hattersley has been offered a Sherwood award by Harrow School, which is an award offered to applicants from Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. Thomas Green has won the prestigious Thring Award to Uppingham School, only offered to candidates who can contribute to many disparate areas of the school and demonstrate high overall achievement and leadership potential. The firm grounding that S. Anselm’s has given them will be a great springboard for their future lives.”

Single 25ml Maximo Extra Anejo from Havanna Club in Cuba shots of Maximo Extra Anejo are now on sale at the Leopold Square venue for £150. Considered by many to be the finest rum ever made, the ultra-premium drink even comes in a handmade crystal decanter. Cubana’s rum menu, which has 161 varieties including those from Dominican Republic, Martinique, Barbados and Japan, is believed to be the most extensive in the UK outside of London. Sheffield rum O’Hara’s is also available. “We’ve been working on our rum menu for quite a few months and securing a bottle of Maximo Extra Anejo was the last piece of the jigsaw,” said Adrian. “It’s handcrafted by blending the finest and oldest rum reserves. Only 1,000 bottles of this prized reserve are available worldwide and we have one of them. “We’re hoping to further our links with Cuba in the coming months and are now in advanced discussions with a view to bringing a very talented group of Cuban musicians over from Havana for a two month residency with us, which, if we succeed, will be an amazing coup for Cubana.”

WS Glazing
A brighter view
The answer to your misty double glazing couldn’t be clearer – call Sheffield Glazing for replacement energy-efficient glass.
A
s the weather begins to improve, the hours of daylight extend and the flowers start to blossom, there are few greater pleasures than gazing out into the garden and looking forward to stepping outside to embrace the joys of spring. What can quickly bring this enjoyment to halt, however, are misty windows that obscure the view and make everything look a little less beautiful. But you needn’t suffer with a misty view any longer as Sheffield Glazing is on hand to replace failed units or inefficient windows and help you enjoy spring to its full extent. With more than 30 years’ experience in the industry, Sheffield Glazing’s owner Graham Warsop certainly knows his stuff when it comes to all things glazing. Having worked on both the manufacturing and installation sides of the business – and now specialising in installation – he knows this industry inside out and is proud to offer fantastic products at very reasonable prices. The Pilkington KS glass sealed units that
Graham fits as standard are filled with argon gas and manufactured to BSI standard so you have the peace of mind that your new glass has been rigorously tested and is highly energy efficient. And as we all know by now, it’s not just our carbon footprint that increases with inefficient glazing products, but also our energy bills. “After a period of time, the seal between the two pieces of glass in a double glazed window unit breaks down and causes a misty effect,” explains Graham. “When this happens, it means they no longer have any thermal efficiency or sound proofing and heat loss can become a big problem.” While you may think that the only solution is to fork out for a new frame as well as new glass, Graham is pleased to say that this isn’t necessary. “What I do is fit the latest energy-efficient glass into existing frames of any size. As long as there is no damage to those frames, there is no need to replace them – and this can save people a lot of money.” While frames have improved slightly
over the years, they have mainly stayed the same so you can rest assured that you won’t be losing heat through old frames. Huge improvements in glazing technologies, however, are benefiting homeowners more than ever. So why wait until the glass is misty? With very competitive prices and no VAT to pay, Sheffield Glazing can offer an affordable option for new double glazing that will instantly improve the energy efficiency of your home without breaking the bank. Floral tribute Flowers will take centre stage at 2016’s weddings, writes Molly McGreevy.
W
eddings and flowers have always gone hand-in-hand but in 2016, floral is taking over. No longer saved for bouquets and buttonholes, flowers will influence every aspect of your special day. Floral embellishments were showcased by a host of designers at New York Bridal Fashion Week. Some dresses featured minimalist design, with a touch of floral design complementing an otherwise traditional gown. Others were brave and bold, covering their dresses in colourful floral prints, perfect for brides wanting to stand out from the crowd. Replacing traditional tiaras, flower crowns are predicted to grace the heads of brides in 2016, especially at summer weddings. Crowns can vary from the bright and ostentatious, using dozens of fresh flowers to more simplistic, chic designs. Bridesmaids won’t be missing out on the fun either, with floral patterned dresses predicted to bring a flourish of summer to

bridal parties, as well as flower accessories and hair pieces for those finishing touches. Flowers have always been popular decorations at weddings, but this year the wilder the better. Alongside floral, bringing the outside in is set to be a huge trend in weddings in 2016, and is reflected in the flowers brides are choosing. For tables, foliage is replacing traditional flowers and
rustic arrangements of greenery, herbs and berries will take pride of place on tables. Hanging decorations create intimate and romantic settings at weddings. Combining ivies and ferns with fairy lights can instantly transform any venue into a fairytale, woodland scene after dark. To continue the flower power into your wedding food, use flowers for cake inspiration. Sugar flowers were incredibly popular in 2015 and the trend looks set to continue in the New Year. Tech savvy brides can really stay ahead of the crowd by using laser-cut flowers on their cakes, a new method relatively new to the wedding cake world. Brides are also using flowers to decorate naked cakes, a rising trend in wedding cakes where no icing is used but flowers and fruit are used for decoration instead. With flowers taking over this wedding season, finding the most stylish way to incorporate the beauty of nature into your big day will be a breeze.

Little mester, big ideas Years of experience and quality craftsmanship go into making range of beautiful bespoke jewellery at Tiago.
Y
ou may have noticed a shiny new addition to Abbeydale Road – Tiago, on the corner of Archer Road. But this is no ordinary jewellery shop; behind the highly polished display cabinets lies a wealth of creativity. Blending CAD/CAM technology and traditional handcarving techniques, jeweller David Raynes creates unique jewellery from scratch. “If you’ve seen five different rings and liked elements of them all but not quite put your finger on the perfect design, I can create it for you,” he says. “All of my rings are bespoke – you choose the gem stones, the metal and the design and I’ll do the rest.” Every item is designed, manufactured and finished right here in Sheffield. Take a peek through the floor-to-ceiling windows next time you’re passing and you’re likely to see David beavering away in his workshop. He even offers 3D printed models so you can not only see an incredibly realistic CAD drawing of your ring before it is made, but you can actually try on a version of the final design. To truly understand David’s unique skill, you need to rewind 31 years. After leaving school, he enrolled as a YTS trainee engineer at Sheffield Forgemasters before completing a City & Guilds qualification in jewellery and silversmithing at the age of 17. In the three decades since, he has repaired jewellery, done lapidary work and been a model maker, all while honing his crafting skills.
WESTSIDE 90
When the recession hit in 2008 – just as David was setting up Tiago – he took a full time job at one of the UK’s top ten independent retailers to weather the storm. On evenings and weekends, he’d meet clients, finish designs and create his bespoke rings at the business’s first home in Kelham Island. “It was off the beaten track and I didn’t have a shop front but I built up a good customer base from word-of-mouth recommendations and by meeting new clients at wedding fairs,” he says. “I’ve been working seven days a week for the last nine years and it’s very, very challenging at times but I absolutely love what I do.” From these modest beginnings, David has become something of a hidden gem and now has a dedicated band of loyal followers. In January, he launched himself into the spotlight when he opened the new shop and is currently making the finishes touches to the transformation of the former tile showroom. The move was an excellent decision – in just
a few short months, the already well-established business has grown even further. And it’s not just engagement rings and ladies’ jewellery that David has a reputation for – he is the only jeweller that makes 100 per cent Sheffield steel wedding bands and cufflinks. Using steel from one of the few remaining companies still making steel in Sheffield, they are made entirely in the city and beautifully represent its industrial heritage. They come in polished, hammered and brushed finishes and can be laser engraved with personal touches such as handwritten names, messages, logos or dates. The cufflinks set with mother of pearl, black granite, and Stanage Edge gritstone sourced in the Peak District are particularly popular. To find out more, and see what others have said about the Tiago experience, search ‘Tiago Jewellery’ on Facebook.

A
t ladies fashion boutique New Image they can help you with every last detail. Once they have fitted you with the perfect dress and a bag and shoes to complement – as mother of the bride or groom – you will need a statement hat or fascinator to complete the look. If you are struggling to find the ideal headpiece, their meet the milliner events with Darcie Mae Millinery provide the perfect opportunity to get some expert advice. A bespoke service is also available, with stunning hats and fascinators adding a fabulous finishing touch to any special occasion, the colour, size, shape and design can be matched to your exact specifications. Designer Vikki Wharton of Darcie Mae Millinery has worked in the industry for 22 years and says: “My mantra is: it’s about the New Image also stock occassionwear and cruise wear, including Joseph Ribkoff

whole ensemble, not just one particular item. A lot of people think: hats don’t suit me, but it’s just about finding the right shape and materials for you. And the most important thing is to wear it with confidence; don’t hide away underneath.” When it comes to choosing the right design for you remember that you are wearing the hat and not the other way around. Choose a style that ultimately you’re comfortable in and one that complements your shape and height. So if you’re tall avoid tall hats and go for wider brims. If you’re short avoid large hats and go for smaller structured creations. For mothers of the bride and groom, Vikki says: “Consider that you are a very important guest and people will want to kiss you, so if you’re quite short a big brim might not be a good idea. Also as a mum of the bride or groom there will always be someone next to you, so choose something no wider than shoulder length.” As a mother of the bride or groom, you deserve to enjoy a wonderful experience at such a special time – and New Image excels in making this happen. Put at ease from the moment you step through the door, you’ll enjoy a personal service with individual, undivided attention in a relaxed environment. Owner Lesley Taylor “We’ve dressed many
ladies more than once over the years as they keep coming back for our special service and great selection of outfits, shoes and hats, all under one roof.” The upper floor is Ann Cullen dedicated to special occassionwear and cruise wear with designers such as Condici, John Charles,Veni Infantino, Gina Bacconi, Jospeh Ribkoff and Michaela Louisa lining the rails, you’ll discover a world of beautiful fabrics, styles and colours. To celebrate finding the perfect outfit and accessories, you can toast with a glass of wine before leaving with your garments wrapped protectively in suit covers, and bags, shoes and hats beautifully boxed. And, if any alterations are needed, the two in-house seamstresses take care of every nip and tuck to ensure the perfect fit. WS Education
Small school, big sports Physical activity can help your daughter do better in lessons, which is why it is a priority at Ashdell School.
E
ncouraging girls to take part in sports has never been so important. The rise of childhood obesity, diabetes and lack of selfesteem among girls as young as five has highlighted why sport in schools is a vital part of the curriculum. At Ashdell School in Broomhill, sport is as important as maths and English. They recognise the part it plays in helping girls to not only keep fit and healthy but also develop important life skills. Studies prove that girls who play sports do better in school as exercise improves learning, memory and concentration, which can give active girls an advantage in the classroom. By playing a team sport, girls learn team work and goal-setting skills. When they are working with coaches, teachers, trainers and team mates to win games and achieve goals, they are learning how to be successful. Being involved in a sport helps boost selfconfidence – the more you practise, the more you improve and achieve those goals. Exercise also cuts pressure as brain chemicals released during exercise improve a person’s mood. Friends are mood lifters and being part of a team creates tight bonds between team mates, who will support you both on and off the field. Ashdell likes to practise what they preach. Among the staff are netball players, runners, a triathlete, long-distance walkers, badminton players and tennis players. PE teacher Jane Cooke is certainly one who doesn’t sit still: an ex-Olympian and ex-Gladiator women’s champion, she has recently competed in the ITV series Ninja Warrior, where she made it through to the semi-finals. “As a PE teacher I need to be a role model,” says Jane. “It is

important for me to keep active and show you are never too old to give things a try.” Ashdell girls regularly play hockey, netball, tennis and rounders, they run in crosscountry events, take part in martial arts and gymnastics clubs and play badminton. They strive to do their best and are always busy in sporting events and theatrical productions, in and out of school. This talent was recognised and rewarded recently when two P4 girls were awarded scholarships to their senior school. Grace will go to Sheffield High School with a sports scholarship and Molly will go with a performing arts scholarship. Ashdell School also has its own coeducational Pre-School, Snowdrops. Based on the same site on Fulwood Road, the popular and successful Pre-School is run in association with Birkdale School and provides the perfect environment for boys and girls who are rising three. Everybody is welcome to see for themselves just what makes Ashdell School and Snowdrops so special, at their Open Day on Saturday 23 April 1-3pm. Ashdell School and Snowdrops Pre-School are also now registering for September 2016 and 2017. Star attraction: the sleepy sloth is just one of Costa Rica’s many fascinating animals. Photograph: Marco Diaz Segura/www.shutterstock.com
Lizzie Murphy experiences the rich variety of life in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica.
NATURAL WONDERLAND
F
lying through the forest canopy nearly 1500m above the ground, this felt like a challenge that would even make Bear Grylls think twice. Well, almost. The fact that I had been kitted out with a harness, a helmet and was accompanied by a team of safetyconscious guides may detract slightly from the True Survivor element of Costa Rica’s Ecoglide zip-wire experience. In fact, it was the perfect introduction for two adrenaline rookies such as myself and my traveling companion, my dear old dad. Costa Rica is a land rich in experiences. A paradise for thrill-seekers and nature-lovers alike, the country attracts over 2.5million tourists annually. Almost half of these visitors are seeking to explore the expansive natural beauty of the country, which is estimated to contain 5 per cent of the world’s biodiversity. As both a biologist and lover of all things Attenborough, I leapt at the opportunity to discover this treasure trove of tropical life. I was certainly not disappointed by the gems we uncovered. Some of Costa Rica’s richest life is found on land, in the rainforests of the northern highlands. A varied selection of mammals live here, from the heavily armoured armadillo to the wide-eyed kinkajou.
WESTSIDE 98
The star of the show is without a doubt the sloth, the world’s slowest mammal. Sleeping for between 15-20 hours a day, this animal moves so slowly its fur provides the perfect habitat for moths, beetles and

cockroaches. We were lucky enough to spot one of these weird yet wonderful creatures during a night walk in the cloud forest of Monteverde. Hanging from a thin, trailing vine a mere three feet above us, it swung itself delicately upwards in search of some evening grub. It was not just this mysterious mammal that our tour guide, Elbert, was keen for us to witness. Once we were fully equipped, torches in hand, he led us through the forest in search of a variety of nocturnal critters. Elbert had his walkie-talkie at the ready, communicating with other nearby guides to ensure we saw the finest of what the forest had to offer under the veil of darkness. Elbert pointed through trees and branches to show us a side-striped palm viper, poised and ready for ambush. He shone his light into a small burrow between thick, knotted tree roots to show us a female

orange-kneed tarantula. Leaves came alive, suddenly revealing themselves to be expertly camouflaged katydid crickets. He was so enthused to show us the forest at night our pace quickened until we were leaping over dead wood and hurling ourselves over fallen branches in true Indiana Jones-style, desperate not to miss out. Our explorations of Costa Rica’s natural wonders however, were not restricted to land. Never one to pass up the chance to dive beneath the waves, I spent one morning scuba diving off the north Pacific coast, around the Catalina Islands. On the boat ride to the islands a pod of dolphins joined us, breaking the water’s surface with their arching bodies. The diving itself uncovered moray eels with needle teeth, scorpion fish nestled into the sand and a shiny, silver trumpetfish, proudly hovering above the sand. The final dive of the morning was certainly one to be remembered. While moving through narrow channel between two rocks we came across three sharks drifting lazily along the seabed. Smaller, and thankfully less vicious, than Hollywood’s infamous Jaws, the white-tipped reef sharks paid us divers little attention. These were silent, graceful creatures, their sleek bodies moving in gentle curls with the current. Our breathing remained steady and slow, respectful of the fact that we were merely visitors to their aquatic kingdom. Eventually our air supplies indicated it was time for us to leave so we headed back to the surface, all limbs intact. A trip to Costa Rica wouldn’t be complete without a visit to one of its prime surf locations and the choice is vast. The northern Pacific coastline is a haven to backpackers and beach bums, all in search of the perfect wave. We chose to spend the final few days of our Central American adventure at Tamarindo Bay, one of the most famous surf resorts in the country. Being a complete novice to the sport, I spent an intense two hours inhaling seawater as I threw myself off the board in a frenzy of flailing limbs. Such an exhausting effort finally paid off and I finally managed to ride a wave, albeit on an over-sized foam beginners’ board. Costa Rica is so much more than a holiday destination; it’s a country of adrenaline and adventure. It’s the perfect place for those who are looking for something with a bit more bite than just sun, sea and sand… perhaps with the help of a shark or two.

You never know who’ll be joining you for brunch when you drop in to sample Made by Jonty’s famous eggs.
T
here are some things you expect to see at Made by Jonty; great food is a given, as is the delicious coffee, warm service and homely atmosphere. What you don’t expect to see, perhaps, is actors from Corrie partaking in a spot of late morning brunch. Which begs the question, was the Weatherfield window cleaner part of the current ITV production being shot in the city or has word reached the cobbles that Jonty’s poached eggs are that good? Of course I could have completely got the wrong end of stick, Sally Metcalfe’s other half might just have a doppelganger in Sharrowvale, but whatever the outcome, it certainly created a talking point on our visit and let’s be honest, Jonty’s eggs are pretty much faultless. While brunch is essentially the bread and butter of Made by Jonty, the daily blackboard specials do drift into different directions and on this occasion included baba ganoush quesadilla, BBQ bean cassoulet and cous cous tabouleh. And although tempting, it would have been a shame not to try the famed eggs – “I cook a lot of ‘em,” admitted Jonty – so brunch it was. My wife enthused over her huevos rancheros; spicy patatas bravas served on corn tortillas, melted cheese and topped with two fried eggs. Pretty as a picture, it delivered on

flavour too and had a generous chilli kick. I opted for poached eggs, served here with soft, delicate Irish potato cakes, slivers of smoked salmon, a watercress salad and horseradish crème fraiche. Salmon and horseradish is a tried and tested flavour combination and is one that works so well. This was a deliciously light dish which I could have easily eaten again – not because there wasn’t enough but because it was that good. Gluttony aside, it did leave me some room to try Jonty’s cakes. Spoilt for choice, we opted for a slice of lemon drizzle cake and one of carrot cake. The latter was the star; light, moist and with a delicious icing, it was a real treat. Children are welcomed and well catered for at Made by Jonty too. My three-year-old tucked into his kids breakfast – sausage, beans, hash browns – with gusto. If the colouring pencils don’t work, there’s free wifi so you can pick up the latest episode of Corrie, or Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures if you’re three (it worked for mine), to keep them entertained. Despite a background in fine dining, Jonty has found a real home from home on Sharrowvale Road and is clearly happy with what he’s doing. Six years on and it’s still as popular as ever and one of the go-to destinations in this burgeoning corner of Ecclesall. I’d take it over Roy’s Rolls any time.

Living la dolce vita Take a pinch of movie glamour and a lot of authentic Italian flavours and you’ve got the Nonnas recipe for success. Words and photography: Chris Wilson
I
n the iconic 1960 movie La Dolce Vita, a playboy journalist in Rome gets his stories by sleeping with starlets and unearthing the secrets of the in-crowd, who inhabit a city that seems to be all about glamorous after-dark gatherings in hip bars and swanky restaurants. All in a Westside hack’s day? In your dreams... but the job does have its moments, including the chance to sample the sweet life in some of the region’s finest restaurants. Nonnas has been a cornerstone of the ever-evolving Ecclesall Road dining scene over the last 20 years and the makeover that started last year remains ongoing, including the latest touch of flair, a wall fresco that pays tribute to that very same movie. The depiction of sharp-dressing bright young things and paparazzi flashbulbs makes a good fit. After all, peoplewatching has always been part of the fun in this buzzing venue. But there has also been another constant from which main man Maurizio Mori has not wavered over the past two decades - a commitment to the real flavours of Italy, a serious restaurant that adds substance to the froth on those creamy cappuccinos. Classic Italian cooking is the name of the game, and now it comes with a local twist; running parallel to the a la carte menu, Nonnas is featuring regional specials and, for my visit, it was Emilia Romagne in Northern Italy.
WESTSIDE 112
Maurizio Mori and the striking new fresco at Nonnas
This was the source of a deeply savoury roast chicken broth with chicken tortellini, a delicious and delicate contrast to our second starter, a classically robust mixed game terrine, which was so full of punchy flavours that my companion forgot to make her usual complaint about anything served on a slate. It’s not something I have strong opinions on either way, but it did make an arresting backdrop for the caramelised onions and rocket salad. The braised porchetta that was the centrepiece of my main course was a tremendous slab of fabulously tender goodness. The accompanying red wine sauce was silky with a deep, strong flavour and the leek mash was smooth and very satisfying. This was meat and potatoes taken to the next level. Presentation-wise the star of the show was a plate of king scallops, placed with perfect symmetry on a square plate. Sweet, succulent and caramelised to perfection, the accompanying cauliflower puree, black pudding bigne and pea shoots completed a very special dish. Side orders of broccoli with toasted almonds and a slab of gorgonzola and potato cake completed this picture of culinary bliss. When it came to desserts, one dish caught my eye. If you like a sweet-and-savoury contrast, how does gorgonzola ice-cream sound? Probably as peculiar as salted caramel did when it first appeared, but those little nuggets of blue cheese sharpness buried in a smooth sweet ice cream truly hit the spot, served up with a wine-dark poached pear and walnut praline. With a rich and chewy chocolate and hazelnut tart to complete a classic pair of puddings, this had been a taste of la dolce vita to remember.

Currying flavour Jaflong’s been a favourite with Crookes diners for years – and with good reason.
T
here are few things in life bring greater joy than curry and cold beer. For me, any excuse to visit a local curry house is a good one and, on this occasion, it was a Friday evening and time to celebrate the start of the weekend. Any restaurant that has stood the test of time is a sure sign of a good thing, and Jaflong in Crookes has been a firm favourite since it opened its doors over 17 years ago. With a combination of Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine on offer, there is a fabulous selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes to choose from. The drinks menu also presents an excellent range of wines, spirits and soft drinks. Nevertheless, we couldn’t resist a pint of refreshing Cobra each to enjoy with our starters. My succulent Tandoori king prawns were a beautiful vibrant pink-orange, and tasted just as good as they looked. My partner opted for the mixed bhaji starter and enjoyed a crisp well-filled vegetable samosa, a fragrant onion bhaji and a delicious patty of aloo chop. With such an extensive menu, choosing mains was no easy feat. Thankfully, owner Shahab Uddin was on hand to make recommendations based on our preferences. As a fan of a healthy spice kick, but nothing too intense, Shabah recommended I try the chef’s special bhuna. Featuring chunky pieces of chicken tikka, lamb tikka, king prawns, peppers and onions in a rich medium-hot ginger and garlic sauce, this is dish provided just the right
WESTSIDE 114
amount of heat and is perfect for indecisive diners (like myself) who prefer to sample a bit of everything. Across the table my companion tucked into a fresh and flavoursome vegetable biryani and a peshwari nan added a sweet dimension and proved to be the ideal accompaniment. The tarka dahl, which we shared and eagerly savoured every last delicious buttery morsel also deserves a special mention. We managed to find room for dessert and the mango kulfi (a traditional Indian dessert similar to ice cream) and matka – creamy kulfi topped with almonds and pistachio pieces, accompanied by a saffron sauce served in a beautiful floral pot – offered the perfect sweet-but-light ending to a flawless meal. While Jaflong has enjoyed years of success, Shahab continually strives to improve and offer something new to his customers. Each year, he and head chef, Abdul Baished, add five new dishes to the menu, so whether you’re a regular or a newcomer, you’re sure to discover something new.

Eighteen months ago it was the new kid on the block – now it’s matured into a firm favourite, writes Chris Wilson.
Brocco comes of age
F
rom startlingly different newcomer to firm favourite, the cool Scandinavian décor and beautifully planned menus at Brocco on the Park seem to have quickly acquired a place in the hearts of many Westsiders. I was won over from the low-key opening 18 months ago and Brocco quickly became a popular choice for coffees and light lunches. But as a dinner venue I did wonder if a few more courses on the evening menu with a bit of heft might not go amiss, alongside the small plates and picnic platters. This was Sheffield after all where, over the years, more than one chef has resignedly pointed out that locals expect “a fill-up for a fiver”. A year-and-a-half on from its initial opening and the beautiful pale wood fixtures and classy candles and chandeliers at Brocco are as alluring as ever. But to my eyes the spring menu is the most appetising and balanced yet, and those who do check in with a man-sized hunger will be well looked after. It’s a menu that deserves to be studied at leisure. You could do this with a glass of chilled water – watchful waiting staff ensure that everyone’s glass is topped up at all times – but I chose the venue’s cocktail of

the day, a pear bellini, which made for a fizzy, fruitful start to the evening. Presentation has always been a key element of the Brocco experience and our starter of Brocco brawn (potted pig) was a prime example of that. Placed not so much on a wooden board as the cross-section of tree, the rich, savoury and herb-filled brawn sat solidly with hot buttered roll, salad and a jar of caraway and beetroot jam, with a few artful blobs of mustard for good measure. It looked as pretty as a picture and tasted sublime. Out second starter came from the daily specials board. Chilli barbecue ribs were satisfyingly meaty and spicy with a cooling coriander and yoghurt dip to slightly dampen the fire. For mains we chose two contrasting dishes that really played to Brocco’s strengths. I went for the specials board again and a dazzling combination of duck breast with smoked pancetta and pea tortellini, charred gem lettuce and pickled walnuts. Now that is quite a combination of tastes and textures and it worked beautifully. Meanwhile, my companion’s game pie with mash, roasted vegetables and juniper berry sauce combined comfort and luxury with real finesse. The pastry on the pie was

perfectly light, the meat was very tender. We shared a side order of triple-cooked chips; they were very good but not strictly necessary. Desserts brought a third visit to a specials board that was definitely living up to its name. Chocolate and lime cheesecake was dark and sweet, and the accompanying lime sorbet brought a welcome sharpness. There were more imaginative taste combinations at play with another sweet treat of caramelised banana pudding with toffee sauce and peanut butter ice-cream. Last year’s bright young thing is entering the next phase with confidence and style... with or without chips.

Onto a winner Napoleons is a surefire bet for great food – and you get chips with everything too! Words and photography: Stephanie Burns
I
have never had much luck on the gambling front. With ‘the house always wins’ firmly rooted in the back of my mind, I’ve been reluctant to dabble. So it was with more than a little trepidation that I found myself stepping through the gleaming glass doors of Napoleons Ecclesall Road. But from the second we entered the really rather glamorous restaurant – it’s all velvet booths, green-lit palms and mood lighting – my initial apprehension began to ebb away. By the end of the night, it had disappeared completely. Restaurant manager Daniel Grimm provides a friendly, courteous welcome and is so knowledgeable and passionate about the menu that, when he recommended the pigeon starter and mains of lamb rump and rib-eye steak, we were more than happy to take his advice. My partner chose the pigeon, served pink on a bed of smooth cauliflower puree and accompanied by a generous onion risotto bonbon – utterly delicious – and I opted for the Thai spiced cod, a beautifully cooked piece of fish that was given a kick with tomato and chilli jam and a refreshing twist with lemon and chive crème fraiche. Things were off to a winning start. On to mains, and the crisp and flavoursome fat on my roasted lamb rump was sensational. Diet be damned, I ate every
WESTSIDE 118
last bit on the plate. Joined by succulent pink meat, olive tapenade and a tasty Mediterranean tart, it was a delight. My partner’s tender rib-eye steak was equally well received and sides of excellent roast potatoes and seasonal vegetables completed the main course in style. Having realised that Daniel was a man to be trusted, we didn’t hesitate to ask for his opinion on dessert. The ‘Crunchie’ cheesecake was a certain choice, but we couldn’t decide between the chocolate trio and the lemon posset. “Leave it with me,” Daniel said as he disappeared with a mischievous smile, only to emerge from the kitchen a few moments later with all three puds – the devil! All were excellent but the super-smooth, zingy lemon posset really stole the show. Feeling rather bold thanks to a delightful New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (yet another recommendation from Daniel), we headed downstairs to enjoy an after-dinner G&T and see how far we’d get with our £5 gaming chips. Pretty far, as it turned out. While I sensibly retired after doubling my initial stake, my partner found fortune with a run of lucky reds on the roulette table and we left with a rather tidy sum. We may have beaten the house, but Napoleons needn’t worry – with food this good, we’ll be back to spend our winnings in the restaurant in no time.
What we ate: Dine in style package £23 (three courses, drink and £5 gaming chip) Starters Thai spiced cod, tomato and chilli jam, lemon and chive crème fraiche. Seared pigeon breast, cauliflower puree, onion risotto bonbon, spring onion and lemon dressing. Mains Roasted lamb rump, Mediterranean vegetable tart, tapenade and jus. Chargrilled rib eye steak, duck fat potatoes, béarnaise sauce and watercress salad (£3 supplement). Dessert Lemon posset, berry compote and poppy seed tuille. ‘Crunchie’ cheesecake, honeycomb and caramel ice cream. Chocolate pot, brownie and ice cream. Drinks Gin and tonic x2. Rongopai Sauvignon Blanc, £19.95. Napoleons Casino & Restaurant 844 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8TD Tel: 0114 266 1115 www.napoleons-casinos.co.uk

WS Competition
A night at the opera Win a pair of tickets to see Die Fledermaus at Sheffield City Hall.
A
stunning new production of the Johan Strauss opera Die Fledermaus is coming to Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 28 April. One lucky Westside reader will win a pair of tickets for this stunning show in our easy-to-enter, online-only competition. This spectacular and lavish production is set in late 19th century Vienna and is based on the Herbert von Karajan’s famous version, with snatches of spoken dialogue. Strauss’s light-hearted operetta combines a cast of colourful characters with some of opera’s most popular musical moments in a story of love, laughter and sweet revenge. The centrepiece of Die Fledermaus is the wonderful ball room scene at the pinnacle of the operetta, featuring all the lavish and decadent joy of 19th century Vienna, two splendid champagne fountains
and a surprise mystery guest! The production stars the critically acclaimed international soloists Maria Tonina as Adele, Alyona Kistenyova as Rosalinda and Lisa Kadelnik as Prince Orlovsky. Die Fledermaus will be sung in English with a translation by Ellen Kent. Tickets for Die Fledermaus are available online at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.
How to enter Enter our competition online at www.regionalmagazine.co.uk The closing date is Friday April 15 Question Name the composer who wrote Die Fledermaus?

WS Motoring
Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest from the world of motoring. VW on the Up! The introduction of the Up! back in 2011 made driving a small city car really rather enjoyable indeed. It was an exceptional car that deserved all the praise it could get. Now there’s a new Up! in the pipeline, and it looks to be even better than before. For starters it’s going to cost exactly the same as the old model, but with improved levels of tech and higher specs meaning it’ll be better value for money. More customisation options are available with seven trim levels to choose from. It’ll come with a brand-new 89hp 1.0-litre TSI unit which can achieve 64.2mpg, yet match performance figures which,VW says, are on a par with that achieved by the first ever Golf GTI.
Mid-life makeover The SL Roadster is an iconic car, and from April, there’s going to be a brand-new variant. A mid-life makeover shall we say. The looks have changed with elements of the 300 SL from the fifties being incorporated into the design. The inside has been upgraded to align with the rest of the range and includes new technology such as Apple CarPlay. Four models will be available: SL400 (3.0-litre V6), SL600 (4.7-litre V8), SL63 (5.5-litre V8) and SL65 (6.0-litre V12) with power ranging from 367hp (SL400) to 630hp (SL65). The SL400 and SL600 get the all-new nine-speed automatic gearbox and the SL63 and 65 get the seven-speed unit. Prices start from £73,805.
BMW goes into the red Ever fancied your BMW i8 in red? Well that was tough as the Bavarian car company didn’t give you the option. That is until now! It’s called the Protonic Red Edition and besides the exclusive Protonic Red paint finish, you also receive Frozen Grey metallic accents around the front kidney grills and side skirts, along with Orbit Grey metallic W-spoke lightalloy wheels. On the inside, there’s high class red double stitching, as well as carbon fibre and ceramic trims. There are no changes mechanically to the base model i8 meaning there’s 362hp from a battery assisted 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo engine, which produces 134.5mpg and a 0-62 time of 4.4 seconds. It costs £8,995 more than the standard i8 at £112,535. First deliveries expected in September.
Even more Italian style The Giulietta – Alfa Romeo’s family hatchback to rival the likes of the Ford Focus and VW Golf – has been a great addition to the family market, combining delicious Italian styling with family practicality and German-rivalling build quality. On 1 April, the brand-new version will go on sale, priced from £18,450, and there are a raft of new additions and changes. The styling has incorporated design elements from the upcoming Giulia with new alloy wheel designs making it even more desirable to the fashion conscious. Inside there are revised seat upholsteries, dashboard and door panel finishes with each model coming with a great list of standard equipment. Nine power units will be available with a new 120hp 1.6-litre diesel achieving 74.3mpg, 99g/km of CO2 and 0-62mph time of a 10.2 seconds.
