Garden buildings rarely need planning permission (although there are exceptions which we have outlined later in this article) and can be fitted with water, electrics, heating and – most importantly – wifi, making them a real home from home. With many people working from home over the last year, a garden office has become a viable and practical alternative to using a cramped corner in the kitchen, giving you peace, quiet and great views over your outdoor space. Garden buildings aren’t limited to offices though and can be used for all manner of things including a gym, a playroom, cinema room or a
bar/entertaining space - the only limit is your imagination. Perhaps not quite as grand but equally effective at enhancing your outdoor space is adding something like an outdoor kitchen, bar or pizza oven which, when combined with a decked or paved area and comfortable seating, can create a truly impressive space to entertain your guests – which will become a reality when restrictions hopefully lift on 21 June. While our homes often meet all our needs for family life, not everyone has the space for a dedicated work area. Too often, home workers have found themselves in cramped corners of the home trying to juggle office responsibilities, phone calls and Zoom meetings, all to the background of homeschooling, housework and the distraction of Home Under the Hammer. Building a fully-equipped garden office can give you everything you crave and more, as well as adding value to your home. And it’s easier than you think.

Case Study 1: Dore Garden Offices
PLANNING: hat you’re wanting to build in your garden is a key aspect in determining whether or not you’ll need planning permission. However, the size of whatever you’re planning to build will have the biggest impact. According to the UK government, a building or enclosure that is being built within the boundaries of a house that is ‘incidental to the enjoyment of the dwellinghouse’ is designated as a Class E building. A Class E building does not require planning permission if it, and other existing buildings, do not cover more than 50 per cent of the total area of the house. They also cannot be built in front of the principal elevation of the house — so no building out on your front garden! You’ll need planning permission if: • Your garden building is going to be more than one storey or have eaves higher than 2.5 metres. • The overall height is going to be more than 4 metres for a dualpitched roof. • The overall height is going to be more than 3 metres for other roof types. • The overall height is going to be more than 2.5 metres if the building is within 2 metres of the boundary of the curtilage (borders or fences) of your home. • The building will take up more than 50 per cent of all land outside the house. This includes your current garden buildings — if your shed takes up 20 per cent of the land outside your house and you want to build a log cabin that will take up 35 per

cent of the land, you’d need planning permission as combined, they take up 55 per cent of the land. • You want a veranda, balcony, or raised platform as part of the building. • If your residence is a listed building, you’ll need planning permission regardless. If you’re building a shed or summer house that doesn’t extend further than the dimensions above, you should be good to go without planning permission in terms of dimensions and space requirements and regulations. The vast majority of log cabins, garden sheds, and summer houses will class as Class E buildings and not need planning permission in this case. If you’re planning to make your outdoor building a place to work from or simply socialise in, you won’t usually need planning permission (unless the dimensions extend as above). However, the use of your garden building can impact the need for planning permission. You’ll need planning permission if: • You’re planning to use your outdoor building for sleeping accommodation — such as a summerhouse in the garden for adult children or elderly relatives to live in to retain their privacy while living at home. • The building could, in any way, impact your neighbours’ right to privacy. Think tree houses — your kids will love them, but your neighbour might not be best pleased.

emember. The walls have ears. Not only that, but these days they’re sprouting eyes, and a nose as well as some very distinctive expressions. If you’ve spotted something like this recently, don’t worry. It doesn’t mean that the sympathetic men in white coats are on the way to your door. It’s merely a sign that Andrew Vickers has been in the vicinity. Andrew is the mastermind behind a business – and the clue is in the name – called Stoneface. His is a remarkable success story which has seen ordinary stone transformed into works of art. And in doing so, he has built an international enterprise. Customers from all over the

world now beat a path to his door in Storrs Wood, a green enclave amid the trees in Loxley Valley, on the fringes of Sheffield. They have been joined by a string of celebrities seeking one-off commissions, though for confidentiality reasons he’s not naming names. That much is set in stone. He is quick to stress that success has come as a result of a little help from the family, in the shape of his son Tom, 26. “Tom is the one who does all the social media and marketing. He’s the driving force behind the business. I just carve stone,” he says modestly. So what was his route to this unusual career?
“I didn’t do very well at school, partly because I’m dyslexic and they didn’t understand it back then. I have always loved stone as a material, so I became a dry stone waller. But it soon became apparent that once you’ve built walls for a while, there was little else to do. “It occurred to me that when I rebuilt sections of wall, there was no record of who had built it originally, which I thought was sad. So I started putting stone faces in the walls as a kind of signature. I’d never carved before in my life. One night I just went home with a piece of stone and started working on it. It took me quite a few days to do it, but that was where the idea came from. “My first attempt was rather simplistic,

but it made me think hey, I can do this. If I get an image in my head, I can replicate it in stone.” Having discovered he had a natural talent for sculpture, it was a logical leap to start on more ambitious pieces. Ornate candle holders, stone hearts and statuary were in high demand. An unexpected challenge arose when he took to a creative way of showing his appreciation to the NHS during the Covid pandemic. Messages of support began to appear on boulders, providing a unique way of commemorating the events of that year in a permanent form. Orders of all kinds have also come in from as far away as the USA.
Could one of the stone faces with the glum expression be inspired by Donald Trump lamenting the ‘stolen’ election? Perhaps not. But his biggest challenge is yet to come. Andrew is now investigating crowdfunding for the most ambitious plan to date. It involves building a stone circle complete with ten standing stones surrounding a central monolith, each of them individually sculpted. The site chosen for the immense structure is in Storrs Wood. Its name? Storrshenge. But his talents have also be applied to other materials. Andrew is a passionate devotee to the principles of recycling, a commitment he demonstrates by crafting
all his works in waste stone, the material discarded by commercial stone yards. This led him to create two of his more unusual works, an elephant and a human figure – fashioned out of scrap DVDs. It’s all a far cry from his days spent exposed to the elements working on dry stone wall repairs on farms all over South Yorkshire. And there is a natural pride in displaying his works at the frequent open days when visitors come from far and wide. “I love it. If you are looking for a diamond you will probably have read about the ‘4 Cs’ – Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. We like to add a fifth ‘C’ – Confidence. This backs up the others and gives you the peace of mind to enjoy your new piece of jewellery. For many people confidence comes from having a certificate detailing the measurements and grades of their diamond, but there is more to it than simply having a piece of paper. Many different laboratories and companies produce ‘certificates’ but they are not all equally useful. Check that the certificate you are given is produced by an independent laboratory with the correct expertise: we tend to choose diamonds with GIA (Gemological Institute of

America) reports as they are industry leaders and widely regarded as producing the most consistent grading. The certificate should also be for the individual diamond you are buying and should detail its measurements and grades thoroughly. Pieces with more than one stone may have individual reports for each diamond (a pair of earrings or a three stone ring for example), just for the main diamond (in a halo cluster for instance) or not have a certificate at all if the diamonds are all under 0.25ct. The major laboratories usually laser inscribe the report number on the girdle of the
diamond. This can only be seen under magnification but reassures you that the diamond and the report match. Not all diamonds will have certificates: it is only over the last few years that they have become commonplace, so if you are buying a pre-owned piece it will often not have one. Even today many diamonds are not certificated, for instance with smaller stones because their size means the additional cost is not justified. The easiest way to feel confident in your purchase is to buy from a jeweller you trust. Ask questions! Diamonds are fascinating and learning more about the stone you are going to own and treasure can add to the excitement. Three tech-powered Sheffield trailblazers are searching for potential new talent via Kickstart, the government’s new work experience scheme for young jobless. City, one of the country’s most successful taxi firms, its app-fuelled delivery business City Grab and sister tech company Caboodleit are giving six unemployed young people the chance to get ‘a foot in the door’. If the lucky half-dozen show the right potential during their six-month work experience placements, permanent careers will be up for grabs. Kickstart aims to get jobless 1624-years old receiving Universal Credit on the road to jobs. “The pandemic has made it so difficult for young people to find jobs. We are giving them a chance to make their mark with us,” said Arnie Singh, the Sheffield entrepreneur behind the three brands. His businesses - which employ 60 in Sheffield - are working with The Source Skills Academy at Meadowhall to recruit Kickstart applicants.
Bespoke furniture City homelessness charity Emmaus Sheffield has launched its first bespoke furniture range. Emmaus Sheffield is the working community with quality, self-contained accommodation, training facilities and a workspace for previously homeless men and women aged 18 years and over. It aims through its Social Enterprise programme to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions - to eventually become self-supporting once more. One of the charity’s main fundraising schemes is its extremely popular second hand store at the organisations headquarters in the historic Sipelia Works, a former cutlery factory at Cadman Street, close to the city’s Canal Basin. Sheffield is one of the top five urban regeneration spots in the UK, according to developer SevenCapital, which says that property prices have risen in Sheffield by around 44 per cent in the last ten years. Part of the increase resulted from increased demand for property, fuelled by substantial investment by way of the ‘Heart of the City Masterplan” which brought about improvements in the city, such as the Peace Gardens and the Winter Garden. Now, a £470million “Heart of the City Masterplan II”, which focuses on the retail sector, is expected to accelerate demand for property as Sheffield continues to grow. The housing market has certainly exploded in Sheffield over the last year, with people taking advantage of the stamp duty holiday that was announced in July 2020. However, as the stamp duty holiday was due to come to an end on 31 March 2021, many people were left worrying that they were not going to complete their purchases on time due to delays resulting from COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions and pressures on lenders, search providers and professionals in the property sector as well as the extra demand caused by the stamp duty holiday itself. Fortunately, in his budget on 3 March this year, Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the good news that the stamp duty holiday has been extended to the end of September 2021. This will be a relief if you are one of those who are in the process of purchasing a property and hoping to take advantage of the stamp duty saving of up to £15,000 but were worried that you would not be able to complete the purchase before end March.You now have until the end of June 2021 to complete purchases and

pay no stamp duty on the first £500,000 of the purchase price. From 1 July 2021, you will not have to pay stamp duty on the first £250,000 of any purchases that are completed before 30 September 2021. Funding your purchase in the first place may also have just become easier if you have been struggling to put together the 15 per cent deposit demanded by most lenders in order to buy your new home.You could now find it easier to get a mortgage with a lower deposit as the government’s new mortgage guarantee scheme becomes available in April 2021. Banks and building societies will once again offer mortgages of up to 95 per cent of the cost of the property, and you will only have to find a five per cent deposit. The government will guarantee to repay lenders’ losses made if, for example, borrowers lose their job or property is repossessed and house prices have crashed. Under the scheme, 95 per cent mortgages can be offered on property up to £600,000 – subject to the usual affordability checks. Major lenders such as Lloyds, Nat West, Santander, Barclays and HSBC have already announced they will start offering these mortgages in April 2021 and Virgin Money will come
on board shortly afterwards. It’s probably the most important financial decision you will make in your life and it is the only way you can be sure that your estate goes to the people you want it to go to when you die. If you die without making a will (intestate), your assets will be distributed to relatives according to strict intestacy rules. If there are no surviving relatives as detailed within the rules, your estate will go to the government after it has been unclaimed for 12 years. The latest government figures show that there are currently over 9,000 unclaimed estates, worth billions of pounds. Without a will, your spouse or civil partner may not inherit all of your estate – especially if you have children, in which case the spouse will only receive a percentage of your estate and the rest would go to your children. If you are an unmarried couple, your partner will not receive any of your estate without a will that specifies that they should, which could leave your family financially vulnerable. If you remarry or enter into a civil partnership, any previous will is revoked, so, if you have children from a previous marriage or partnership and you want to ensure that they are provided for, you must make a new will. If you separate, but do not divorce, without a will to the contrary, your estranged spouse could still inherit part of your estate. CUPRA has opened the order books for the latest variant of its iconic Leon hatchback with the launch of the 300PS 2.0 TSI powertrain.The brand’s flagship performance hatch is now available to order with prices starting from £35,660 RRP for the CUPRA Leon Hatch VZ2 TSI DSG-auto 300 and rising to £37,390 for VZ3 trim. Available exclusively with the DSG-auto transmission, the latest iteration of the renowned 2.0-litre TSI four-cylinder engine develops 300PS and 400Nm of torque. The turbocharged, direct injection petrol engine propels CUPRA Leon from 062mph in just 5.7 seconds and is limited to a top speed of 155mph. As well as an increase in power output over its predecessor, the new CUPRA Leon is also more efficient, returning up to 37.2mpg on the combined WLTP cycle and CO2 emissions from 171g/km.
The future has arrived The order books are now open for ŠKODA’s new Enyaq iV, the brand’s first purpose-built battery electric vehicle. Based on the Volkswagen Group’s modular electrification toolkit (MEB), the highly-awaited all-electric SUV is offered with two battery size options, a new range structure and a new finance offering: Lease&Care. The new Enyaq iV introduces a new way for customers to perfectly tailor the car to their tastes and requirements. Instead of selecting from traditional trim levels, customers choose the battery size they need, select an interior design and then personalise their vehicle from a comprehensive range of equipment packs and individual options. From launch, the range consists of two variants; Enyaq iV 60 Nav and Enyaq iV 80 with 62kWh and 82kWh battery packs respectively. Five design selections are available; Loft, Lodge, Lounge, Suite and ecoSuite, all of which offer a different interior look and materials. Prices start from £31,085.
Volvo recharges The future of Volvo Cars is electric, and the new Volvo C40 Recharge is the latest manifestation of the company’s commitment to a zero-emission future. The C40 Recharge has all the benefits of an SUV but with a lower and sleeker design. It is based on the CMA vehicle platform and is the first Volvo model in history designed as pure electric only. Already by 2025, it aims for 50 per cent of its global sales volume to consist of fully electric cars, with the rest hybrids. By 2030, it plans for every car it sells to be pure electric. The propulsion consists of twin electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast charged to 80 per cent in about 40 minutes (expected).
