Keep on running HALLAMSHIRE PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINIC REVEALS WHY SOME SPORTS INJURIES DON’T GET BETTER. Calf problems? I saw a female runner at the clinic who had repeatedly torn her calf muscle over a number of years. Previous treatment, not with us, had concentrated on local massage, ultrasound and stretching. This approach helped but within a few months the problem returned and limited her running. Why local treatment is often ineffective: If treatment is only directed at the local muscle injury most treatment is temporary and problems are likely to return. Muscles are very strong and robust but if they are repeatedly stressed incorrectly some problems will return. The evidence for ultrasound and massage is poor and pre-sport stretching does not reduce injury rates. What should the runner in the above scenario do? Many runners with calf or tendon problems have an abnormal running pattern that causes them to stress the muscle. In the case of the female runner, she tended to ‘bounce’ which produced enlargement of the calf muscles but with repeated tears. Changing how she ran and explaining why she was not improving resolved her problems. Making the body work correctly stopped injury but also improved running efficiency. Hamstrings repeatedly damaged? Many people come to the clinic complaining of tight and painful hamstring injuries. Repeated ‘core’ exercises in which the belief that their trunk is weak produces ‘bracing’ of abdominal muscles and general stiffening. This is the wrong approach as we move most efficiently when we rotate. Making the trunk ‘stiffer’ causes the hamstring muscles to be abnormally stressed as they attach to the pelvis. How to reduce the stress on the hamstrings: Stop ‘core’ exercises and learn to move and incorporate more rotation into your training. If you sit all day get up regularly and move. The abdominal muscles rotate the shoulders against the pelvis so if you want good abdominal muscles ensure they are functional and select activities that rotate the body when training. For example, kettle bell weights, boxing, walking and twisting sit-ups. We blame our particular sport for the injuries but it’s what most people do all day that is the greatest risk: Sitting. We sit at desks and in cars and as we tire we adopt postures that greatly influence how we run or move – try addressing your problems with this advice but if you get stuck come and get a different opinion from Hallamshire Physiotherapy. High expectations CONTINUED POSITIVE FEEDBACK HAS DRIVEN MORTGAGE ADVICE BUREAU TO LOOK AT WAYS IN WHICH THEY CAN IMPROVE THEIR SERVICE EVEN FURTHER. ive months after opening their new mortgage shop on Ecclesall Road, things are going from strength to strength for business principals David Blunden and Scott Woodward at Mortgage Advice Bureau. David said: “It’s already apparent that there is going to be huge demand for our service in the area. The number of clients that have walked into the shop already for advice has pleasantly surprised us and has far exceeded what we anticipated or hoped for. “The feedback we are getting is fantastic and the positive comments about the shop design and warm and welcoming atmosphere is exactly what we set out to achieve. Arranging a mortgage or getting advice can be a daunting time but we want people to feel comfortable as soon as they walk in, so we can help them get to the most suitable conclusion.” Scott added: “We’re so pleased with how the shop launch has gone. People like the fact

F

that they can walk in and have a same day appointment and we are readily available on a face-to-face basis. With a large commitment such as a mortgage, we still believe that there are people who prefer to talk face-to-face; there are so many different factors to consider with a mortgage, and to be able to sit in a relaxing environment seems to be helping our customers. “The shop is open 9-5 Monday to Friday but we are very flexible in terms of appointments. We still see clients in their homes or at work and can do this during evenings or weekends to suit. We have already had a large number of customers come into the shop to arrange appointments in the evening to fit around their work commitments.” Scott and David are also keen to expand the business and have started discussions with a large number of other Sheffield-based businesses. Scott explains: “The discussions we have

had so far have been incredibly beneficial and we have already established strong links with businesses in the area, including local builders, estate agents and accountants and are now looking to build strong relationships with local solicitors. Mortgage Advice Bureau is one of the UK’s leading mortgage networks, with access to over 11,000 mortgages from more than 90 and has won 70 awards in the last five years, including two at the recent Mortgage Strategy Awards. ‘A New Home for Sheffield’s Premier Estate Agency.’

The interior design emphasises the agency’s open-minded thinking and working principles, as well as uniting the various departments across the business.

The concept was to create a working environment, which would be conducive to open communication.

B

lenheim Park Estates have moved to their new prestigious offices on Carter Knowle Road.

They have created a modern industrial look to their office space, which provides a wonderful environment to work and meet with clients. A key focus of the design was the creation of a large open space with a range of rooms for retreat and casual/formal meetings. The design brief also required a large board room, private offices and a media suite as well as staff facilities and a kitchen/lounge area. The concept was to create a working environment, which would be conducive to open communication with all areas designed to interconnect with the use of glazed partition walls and doors to create zoned areas. The design meets all the prerequisites for an open and accepting working culture that gives clients and employees the feeling of a home away from home. The interior design emphasises the agency’s open-minded thinking and working principles, as well as uniting the various departments across the business. Design, development, implementation and finishings were carried out by Blenheim Park Developments and MIS Architectural Aluminium were responsible for the internal and external glazing.

The design meets all the prerequisites for an open and accepting working culture that gives clients and employees the feeling of a home away from home.

DESIGNER KITCHEN DIRECT

DESIGNER KITCHEN DIRECT FINEST QUALITY DESIGNER KITCHENS BUILT ON FAMILY VALUES.

A new generation esigner Kitchen Direct (DKD) are located on Junction Road, Sheffield, just above Hunters Bar roundabout. Dawn Rayner, Managing Director, has 25 years’ experience in the business and has teamed up with her daughter-in-law, Mary Major, and her step-daughters Leah Fleetham and Lauren Fleetham. “It’s a real family business,” says Dawn. “Even the grandchildren like to get involved when they call in.” Two of the designers have degrees in interior architecture, including Mary, who, for the past 14 years has been designing kitchens suited perfectly to the people who will use them. “First of all, I need to know how people live and use their kitchen; what are their main priorities and how they use their space in the home,” says Mary. “With this greater level of understanding I am able to design by function, rather than just by aesthetics. I believe I should never have to try to sell a kitchen. If I do my job right, then I find that

the customer just wants to buy it. “Our prices beat everyone else for this level of quality and finish. Basically, we are offering designer, Britishbuilt rigid kitchens at mass distributor prices. “All cabinets and drawers will stand the test of time – they have 18 millimetre solid backs and sides, to hold them square and provide a firm base for the high quality doors. All of the detailing on the doors is handcrafted into the wood.” “Our ranges are truly bespoke which means you can have them made in any style or colour you want – traditional solid wood, painted, contemporary Italian gloss, or matt finishes. “Each range has a wide choice of accessories; beautiful handles, clever storage solutions, and stunning worktop finishes for a unique look. Our gloss doors are painted using multiple layers of lacquer to ensure a quality durable finish to every kitchen.” The business has a superb team and can offer free, no obligation advice, calling on over 40 years of experience in designing and fitting kitchens. They are happy to come out and measure up, draw plans, and work out cost options for your new kitchen - all at no charge or obligation. “We will work within any budget, and give our customers the very best quality and finish,” adds Mary. “You are sure to be inspired by our showroom and delighted with the prices. “Take the first step in creating your dream kitchen by calling into our showroom, or telephone us to book one of our designers for a free survey. They will then add life and

Another satisfied customer: Helen Little, Derbyshire “Designer Kitchen Direct are simply the best. We are so grateful for the time and care they took over our design, which resulted in an absolutely stunning kitchen. They are so imaginative and practical too. It was the best design we had seen, by far. “Our kitchen is truly unique, superb quality throughout, and the price was very fair and reasonable and came well within our budget. We will never go anywhere else for our kitchens and bedrooms in the future. “A huge thanks to all at DKD.”

BAKEWELL SHOW 2-3 August 2017

Mount 175 - 175 years of Excellence and Care at the Mount

BAKEWELL SHOW 2-3 August 2017

here’s a buzz of excitement around Bakewell Showground as preparations get underway for the 187th Bakewell Show. Bakewell Agricultural & Horticultural Society, the charitable trust that runs the event, will celebrate its 200th year in 2019 and the team at the helm is already making preparations. “We take on visitor feedback each year,” says show manager Janet Bailey, “and even two years in advance of our 200th birthday we’re working to prepare the Show to make it the best it can be.” The Show takes place on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 August, with a dedicated Equestrian Day on Tuesday 1 August. Changes being implemented include a restructuring of Showground attractions and locations to keep things fresh and running smoothly. One of the biggest changes this year is the inclusion of a shopping ‘village’ area, which will aim to tackle the bottleneck effect of foot traffic down Agricultural Way. A number of trade stalls will move into the

T

dedicated area to make walkways less crowded and give visitors the opportunity to peruse stalls in a more leisurely fashion. Also new is free parking for visitors in the Show’s Haddon Fields car park, which is accessed from the A6, offering added value to the adult ticket price freeze, which hasn’t increased since last year. A big draw for families this year is the new children’s ‘Passport to Bakewell Show. “We’re really keen that Bakewell Show is a fun day out packed with educational experiences,” says manager Janet Bailey.“And we couldn’t think of a better way to guide people around the activities by making that an activity in itself!” “Participants will have to explore every corner of the Showground to locate special flags with educational facts and quiz questions,” adds Janet. “Once they’ve found all the answers and had a go at the activities they can return the passport to our office before they leave for a stamp and a rosette.” The ‘passport’ can be downloaded from www.bakewellshow.org or collected on entry.

The map will lead families around to learn about all kinds of animals, from goats and sheep, to pigeons, poultry, shire horses, rabbits and dogs. Completed forms will be entered into a prize draw to win a Samsung Galaxy Tablet A6 courtesy of Central Technology in Chesterfield. Elsewhere for children there’ll be cupcake decorating on arrival at the food and farming tent that will delight those with a sweet tooth, while there’s fun to be had at the Bakewell beach where sandcastles and Punch and Judy shows are the order of the day, plus donkey rides are available for a small fee. Nearby are also free circus skills workshops, an inflatable assault course, bungee trampolines, zip lines and climbing walls for kids with a sense of adventure. Visitors of every age will enjoy other new attractions, including White Post Farm’s popup petting zoo, bushcraft activities with local survival training experts Woodland Ways and Knowles’ Dairy Show, offering an educational insight into the history of dairy produce.

ENTRY INFORMATION • Adult tickets are £17 in advance (£18 on the gate) • Seniors are £15 in advance (£16 on the gate) • Children’s and Equestrian Day tickets cost £5 • Parking at this year’s event is free on the Show’s Haddon Fields car park, which can be accessed from the A6 • Programmes, including a Showground map, will be on sale at the event priced at £1.

“There is an incredible array of breeds to see at the dog show,” adds Janet. “Our Best in Show winners go on to Crufts in the professional competitions, but we also have a companion dog show, which enables the public to take part with their four-legged friends.” Visitors wishing to enter the companion show should visit the dog field on arrival each day with competition entry fees helping support local animal charity Ashbourne Animal Welfare. Additional canine capers can be enjoyed in centre ring at 4pm on the Thursday during the parade of hounds. Children are invited to clamber over the fence at the end of the display to meet the friendly pups. Further centre ring entertainment includes a vintage vehicle parade, weather permitting, and fastpaced scurry driving and mounted games. After huge success last year, the new farriery competition will also make a comeback, expanding to run both main Show days. Visitors can marvel as fast-paced timed competitions that see farriers demonstrate

their craft of shoeing horses. Food and drink attractions are also developing, with an exciting new beer competition for local microbreweries and homebrewers. The competition has been masterminded by Matteo Frau, head brewer at nearby Birchover Brewery. There are a variety of categories for microbreweries to enter encompassing different beer styles. Winners from each category will compete for overall champion, with the winning beer on sale at next year’s Bakewell Show. Homebrew entries can be any style, with the winner getting to brew a commercialised version of their winning recipe at Birchover Brewery. Keeping with the beer theme, the Love Food Live cookery demo trailer will be in residence for the first time, incorporating some of Birchover’s beers into the dishes. Kitchen demos will be run by celebrity chef Richard Fox, known as the Beer Chef, who appeared in Men Brewing Badly with friend Neil Morrissey in 2010.

Celebrity spotters should also keep an eye out for Flog It’s James Lewis, who will return to impart his knowledge on a variety of antiques. Favourites returning in 2017 include the food and farming marquee, home to meat and dairy competitions, with its neighbouring farmers market and popular free fly fishing lessons on the River Wye at Anglers’ Rest. Here, visitors can also marvel at a chainsaw carver at work, creating a special commemorative bench that will remain in situ on the riverbank for all to enjoy. Those looking for an additional school holiday activity can also take part in the Show’s competition in partnership with Peak FM. Schools, families, businesses and individuals are invited to make a scarecrow with a superstar or superhero theme to be in with the chance to win an iPad. The top five scarecrows will be on display in the flower and vegetable marquee at the Show, plus anyone entering gets one free adult and child ticket to this year’s event. More details can be found on the Peak FM website.

FOLLOWING LAST YEAR’S SUCCESS, COMPETITIVE FARRIERY IS RETURNING TO BAKEWELL SHOW ONCE AGAIN, THANKS TO DORIAN MADIN. ammers swung, sparks flew and crowds marvelled at the impressive craftsmanship on display at Bakewell Show’s inaugural farrier competition in 2016. Due to demand from both the public and participating farriers, the horseshoeing competition is set to expand to two days at this year’s Bakewell Show in August. The contest was instigated by Bakewell Show’s duty farrier Dorian Madin, 37, of Buxton. “To be honest there’s often a lot of hanging around in my role at the Show so I began to think about how I could fill the time with something that would add a new experience for visitors,” he says. “There wasn’t a competition like it in Derbyshire until last year,” he adds, “so it attracted about ten qualified farriers in the first year, which looks set to rise to 16 this year.” About half of the participating farriers are local, with the rest coming from further afield to demonstrate their skill. “I had to laugh last year when someone likened it to the Great British Bake Off.” he says. “Everyone is just running around trying to do their best in a timed situation under so much pressure and there’s a lot of pride involved as it’s the participants’ livelihoods. “It’s hugely popular with the public too as it’s fast-paced and exciting, plus they’re

H

getting to see something they don’t see everyday unless they’re a horse owner.” Participating farriers can enter either the roadster or hunter class. The former involves moulding a flat piece of steel an inserting a groove for the nails required to fit the shoe to the horse. “These are traditional shoes for bigger, slower moving horses,” Dorian says, “the shoes wear out quicker so they need to be made of a sturdier steel.” The hunter class on the second day uses a pre-formed concave steel profile for the shoe. “For these type of horses you don’t want them to lose shoes travelling at speed through varying terrain,” he adds, “so the shoe needs to be a continuation of the foot.” Dorian has been expanding his equestrian knowledge since he was a child. His grandfather George Bradder participated in harness racing and ran a horse-drawn fruit and vegetable cart around Old Brampton in Chesterfield. “I’ve ridden since I could sit up straight and even used to compete at Bakewell Show as a kid,” Dorian says. “It was when I saw a local farrier called Doug Bradbury in action when I was about six-years-old that I knew it was all I ever wanted to do.” Dorian went on to study the craft at Hereford College in 1998 and graduated as a qualified farrier in 2002.

Only qualified, registered farriers are legally allowed to shoe a horse in the UK, which is not a global standard, meaning the UK sets a high standard across Europe. “While the industry is steeped in tradition, horses have become more affordable for people,” says Dorian. “A lot of dairy farmers were forced to close down and diversified into opening livery yards instead, so there are more places to keep horses so you need plenty of farriers to keep them in shoes.” Dorian’s success with last year’s Bakewell Show competition led to the reformation of the Derbyshire branch of the British Farriers and Blacksmiths Association (BFBA). “We were looking at a way to get local farriers together to work with one another,” he says. “The Derbyshire branch of the BFBA hadn’t existed for the best part of a decade so it’s been a real achievement to get it back up and running after last year’s Show. “As well as having a social aspect the main focus of the branch is on further education in the field.” A team of eight, including Dorian, will be working to run the competition this year under the BFBA banner with sponsorship from Arthur Cottam Horseshoes in Chesterfield. Cottam’s, a local family business started in 1926, were the first company to produce machine made aluminium racing plates, which are now widely used across the world.

Wild experience AFTER PUTTING DOWN ROOTS IN DERBYSHIRE, SURVIVAL SPECIALIST JASON INGAMELLS IS BRINGING HIS ‘WOODLAND WAYS’ TO BAKEWELL SHOW. hile most of us enjoy the adrenalinefuelled adventures of Bear Grylls and Ray Mears from behind a pillow on our sofas, Jason Ingamells is out in the wilderness experiencing it for real. Jason, 40, is the founder and director of Woodland Ways and has been teaching survival skills for almost 20 years. The training he has provided has helped to save a number of lives. “A few years ago I ran a desert survival skills course in the Sahara.” he says. “I later learned that a team who had taken part were driving from the north to the south coast of Africa

W

when their vehicle got stuck in a mud flat. “They were off the beaten track and the group dynamic was instantly challenged in such a dangerous situation. “They made the correct decision to stay with the vehicle, as per their training, but realising their water supply was running out and that they hadn’t let anyone know where they were going they had to make the decision to move on. “Luckily the group headed off on a bearing and managed to find a village using training we had provided – without that they would likely have died.”

BAKEWELL SHOW 2-3 August 2017 Jason and his team run courses all over the world, providing a high quality, immersive experience for participants. He started Woodland Ways 12 years ago, having always worked within the countryside sector and following experience training in a freelance capacity. “I could see the potential to turn what I was doing into a full-time business,” he says. “The interest from the public in learning these type of skills is ballooning with no sign of the momentum slowing.” Jason puts public interest down to a number of factors, including people wanting to reconnect with nature to escape ties to technology and city life, as well as the

popularity of survival-themed TV shows. “We provide a unique opportunity to have not just an experience, but an educational experience,” he says. “It’s the chance to have an amazing time but learn valuable skills as well. “What I love is that what we teach people may simply change the way they view their surroundings when they go for a walk, or save a life in a far flung place.” Through his global travels and work Jason has also developed the Woodland Ways Bushcraft Foundation, a charitable body that has already helped to build a school in Kenya. “We run a unique trip out there where participants get to stay with and learn about the Maasai tribe,” he says. “We then use the proceeds to help fund charitable work to provide tribal peoples around the globe with assistance where required or requested.” It was only in September 2016 that Jason put down roots in Matlock in the Peak

District with his three-year-old daughter. Growing up on the flat Lincolnshire Fens, his affinity to the Peaks began after a school trip to the area when he was struck by the inspiring rolling landscape. Subsequent visits throughout his teens and into adulthood only cemented Jason’s affinity with the area, so when the time came to put down roots there was only one place to look. “I had been living a nomadic lifestyle on a canal boat moving all around the country,” he says, “But the business was growing so rapidly that it became too difficult to operate it from there.” Jason settled on a premises for the business in Bakewell; his ‘World of Bushcraft’ has brought an extensive range of quality bushcraft and outdoor equipment to the heart of the Peak District. The shop opens every day except Wednesday and expert staff can provide impartial advice on products, bushcraft courses and overseas expeditions. Jason and his team will be debuting Woodland Ways at Bakewell Show for the first time this August. “I want to engage with people and let locals know what’s on their doorstep,” he says. “People can come along and try some skills, such as natural firelighting, making cord from natural materials, bark craft and other general outdoor skills.” The workshops at Bakewell Show are free and aimed at all ages. Woodland Ways will be located in the Show’s new Country Pursuits area, on the banks of the River Wye next to the popular Anglers’ Rest.

Do you brew? DERBYSHIRE PUBLICAN MATTEO FRAU HAS ALWAYS HAD A TASTE FOR FINE BEVERAGES… t started during his youth in Sardinia, when he worked in his family’s vineyard, and matured when he set up his own microbrewery three years ago. Now 39-year-old Matteo Frau is helping to promote unsung local talent by masterminding a competition for homebrewers in partnership with Bakewell Show. Matteo’s interest in brewing began when he took over the historic Red Lion Inn at Birchover. He discovered that the pub had been recorded as a brewhouse in 1722 and still boasts the original well used to draw water for the process. However, brewing on the site dwindled and hadn’t taken place for a number of years until Matteo decided to undertake the challenge of learning to brew in order to put Birchover back on the UK beer map. “I began by homebrewing and experimenting about three-and-a-half-years ago,” he says. “It was then I came to realise how diverse beer can be; there are so many different elements to combine, from hops to malts and yeasts – the amount of endless combinations and possibilities is madness! “I read around the subject and researched it to try and develop my own recipes, as well

as talking to brewers and gaining hands-on experience to learn as much as I could.” Matteo was no stranger to coming up with his own recipes; it was chef training at a fine dining restaurant in Derby that originally brought him to the UK back in 1997. He subsequently expanded his repertoire at the Academy of Dairy in Nantwich studying cheese production. This added to his knowledge of fermentation processes he had accrued at the family vineyard, all aiding his understanding of brewing beer. The first beer Matteo created was Birchover Best, a traditional English bitter. The range has since expanded to include Cork Stone golden ale, Nine Ladies tawny ale and Robin Hood’s Stride IPA. He also brews his own Italian style lager, Bionda, drawing inspiration from his native Sardinia. Birchover beers are mainly used to supply the Red Lion, although some brews are occasionally bottled. While brewing has become a passion for Matteo he has no plans to expand the operation: “I’m so busy running the pub, brewing, cooking, undertaking work for Derby University and trying to be a dad on top that there simply isn’t time!” he says. However, recognising how few competitions there are for homebrewers and

microbreweries led Matteo to make time to mastermind the inaugural Bakewell Show beer competition. The contest is open to the aforementioned producing less than 50,000 hectolitres per annum. Categories for microbreweries include stout and porter, bitter up to 4.5%, speciality 4.5% and above and any style of international brew. Winners from all classes will compete for overall champion, with the winning beer on sale at next year’s Bakewell Show. Homebrew entries can be any style, with the winner getting to brew a commercialised version of their winning recipe at Birchover Brewery. Beers will be judged by an industry panel, who will provide feedback to brewers on their entries. Anyone wishing to submit their beer into the competition should visit www.bakewellshow.org for details on how to enter. The winning beers will be announced at Bakewell Show in the Food and Farming marquee. Show visitors interested in trying Matteo’s beers should also visit the Love Food Live cookery demonstration trailer next to Food and Farming, where celebrity ‘beer chef ’ Richard Fox will be using Birchover beers in his culinary creations.

Planning for the future GILLIAN COVERLEY, PARTNER AND YORKSHIRE HEAD OF TAX TRUST AND ESTATES AT IRWIN MITCHELL PRIVATE WEALTH, OUTLINES THE INHERITANCE TAX CHANGES IN 2017. ack in 2007, the Conservatives promised a £1million Inheritance Tax allowance and in April 2017 this began to come into effect. The £1million allowance will only apply to married couples and civil partners; those who are single or divorced will be limited to £500,000. Being gradually phased in, it will be 2020 before the new tax giveaway reaches the £1million mark but it is hedged with some complex conditions. This will mean a rethink on forward financial planning for anyone concerned to minimise the impact of this most dreaded of taxes. Inheritance Tax was previously 40 per cent on estates over the basic tax-free allowance of £325,000. Married couples and civil partners could pass any unused allowance to each other after a death. For the 2017/2018 tax year the limit rose to £425,000, with the intention of climbing in increments of £25,000 to reach £500,000 in by the 2020/2021 tax year. A couple with a £1 million family home will then be able to pass it on free of tax, but those with other valuable assets may not qualify. In calculating whether the new allowance, known as the ‘Residence Nil Rate Band’ (RNRB), can be added to the existing and automatic ‘Nil Rate Band’ (NRB), the whole estate is valued. If it is over £2million, the RNRB is reduced by £1 for every £2 excess, so that estates worth more than £2.35million get no RNRB. For anyone needing to sell their property to ‘downsize’, but who might be deterred by potentially losing the new enhanced tax relief, special rules can preserve RNRB but are highly complex.

B

The new tax regime brings new opportunities. An estate must include a home that the deceased has lived in, but this does not have to be the main family home and if there is more than one property in the estate, a family can nominate one for the relief. That home must be ‘closely inherited’ – left to a direct or lineal descendant – which includes family members and their spouses, stepchildren, adopted or foster children and grandchildren. Any RNRB that is not used on a first death in a couple can be transferred to a surviving spouse or civil partner. Furthermore, assets and property left in trust will qualify if the only beneficiaries are direct descendants who will have at least a life interest. However, there are pitfalls. Transferring an unused RNRB between spouses will not help if the survivor’s estate becomes too valuable to qualify. Unmarried couples might assume that each other’s children would meet the requirements, but they will not be considered stepchildren of each other and there will be no RNRB. Nor do gifts between an unmarried couple themselves get the new relief. Gillian Coverley, Partner in the Tax Trust and Estates team at Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth, says that there are two significant elements to the new regime: one on the drafting of wills, particularly in relation to trusts, and the other in estate planning as well as the use of assets. “For a husband and wife, there are the options of leaving outright or leaving in trust; it’s about how the trust is worded when the second person dies. We want to encourage

people to take stock of whether their will meets today’s requirements. It is a big change and one has to jump through hoops to meet it. It is essential that people review their Wills to ensure the way they have left their estate qualifies for the new relief.” Estate planning has also come back into focus with the £2million limit on full entitlement for the RNRB. “A lot of spouses will leave everything to each other, but on the second estate it all bunches up and could be over £2million.” The value of an estate can be reduced through either gifting or spending, but Gillian warns that a giver must have full mental capacity: those with power of attorney cannot make gifts without an expensive court application. Gillian also comments: “The changes in taxation of pensions and on death benefits payable from pensions may mean it is worth spending down other capital and leaving pensions intact. Attractive as pension flexiaccess drawdown can be, it may be better to spend capital which you know would be taxed at 40 per cent on death and which might also take you over the £2million cutoff point for RNRB. “Get advice on your will. Your lawyer should understand estate planning and the relevant tax issues, and should be working with other professional advisors to give reassurance and to create a coherent strategy.” For further information, contact Gillian Coverley at Irwin Mitchell on 0114 294 7804 or 0370 1500 100 (Ext. 7804), or by email Gillian.Coverley@IrwinMitchell.com.

THE HOME OF QUALITY FROM STUNNING HAND-CRAFTED KITCHENS TO BESPOKE FURNITURE, DAVID J MARTIN’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL PRODUCES BEAUTIFUL RESULTS. n these days of mass produced furniture it seems almost impossible to find beautiful bespoke, handmade pieces, whether that be for your kitchen, bedroom, study or lounge. At David J Martin customers are welcomed into the firm’s on-site workshop, to see their furniture come to life. “People often don’t believe that the workshop is here, under the showroom” said owner David Martin. “Then we bring them downstairs and they’re blown away.” There’s a team of eight, highly trained carpenters working on kitchen cabinets and islands, bedroom furniture, desks and study furniture, each one made unique to order. David himself is a carpenter by trade, training for years before completing a degree in the subject. He ensures his staff are trained to the highest standard, resulting in the finest quality products. Everything at David J Martin happens under one roof, so David himself can check the quality and finish of each product at every stage of the process. “Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd,” said David. “We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch – even down to

making our own cutters for producing mouldings.” This means you can add to your kitchen in years to come and the company will still be able to match the designs. In the David J Martin showroom, a stunning range of kitchens is on display, but the company also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. For the bedroom, the company builds beautiful wardrobes, and other unique storage solutions for difficult spaces. For the study, David’s team of carpenters can build desks and media spaces.

After an initial customer consultation, when David will discuss budgets and offer expert design advice, the cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which can be sprayed to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. With larger companies, you will often see doors advertised as having a ‘high-gloss finish’. This means that they are vinylwrapped and, although this does produce a shiny look, it means that you will be able to see the joins. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paintspraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinyl-wrapped doors. Everything is done in-house, which enables David to guarantee high quality at every stage. For those customers undertaking full refurbishment of their home, David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work, as well as building furniture. David said: “We run a building company alongside our bespoke joinery company, so customers are not waiting for plumbers, electricians and so on. We can take care of

everything and ensure that the project is completed to the highest standard.” For David it’s all about creating a high quality customer experience, whether the job be big or small. One call to David J Martin could result in a stunning new extension, complete with kitchen, plumbing and electricity – David only employs the best tradesmen. In the company’s 37 years of trading, David J Martin has built a superb reputation for customer satisfaction. The company is highly regarded for their customer and after-sales service, ensuring that every customer is a happy one and fixing any problems with their

Another happy customer… When Simon and Rachel considered restoring their porch, they turned to the team at Window Spec and were over the moon with the results. “We had a canopy above the front door, which after water damage had to be taken down. After 18 months of nothing over the door we were ready to go for a conservatory style porch. After speaking with Andy from Window Spec, he told us we had another option – extend the front of the house with a 3m brick extension, creating more of an entrance that would look like part of the structure of the house. Needless to say we fell in love with the idea.” Simon and his wife went for the Rockdoor brand, which is the strongest door on the market. The brand is manufactured in accordance with Secured by Design, an accreditation fully back by the police. Their front doors don’t just look the part, they also provide unrivalled security and thermal efficiency with their Ultimate range of doors achieving an A++ energy rating. They also opted for A-rated uPVC windows, which are energy efficient and provide top security and installation. “Both Andy and John went above and

beyond to help us, especially when they spent half a day removing a ceramic tile house number, which we wanted to replace with a more modern one. “Throughout the day they never stopped working, described exactly what they were doing at each stage and always left things clean and tidy. Every part of the work was of an amazingly high quality. “Andy and John, despite certain methods being more expensive, never increased the initial price of the work as they just want to do the best job. They wanted the final product to look as good as it possibly could – it isn’t about the money, just about doing the work to the best possible standard. “We think Window Spec are a reliable, hard-working company, who pay incredible attention to detail. We are beyond happy with the exceptional work that has been carried out and would definitely recommend them.” Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 63

BIRKDALE SCHOOL CHARITY BALL RAISES £6,000

Say it with flowers at Celebration of Life It’s the summer daisy chain made up of memories, with every petal celebrating the life of a St Luke’s Hospice patient. The St Luke’s Celebration of Life returned to the hospice gardens in Little Common Lane on Sunday 30 July, as a chance to celebrate life and share the memory of loved ones. The party began in the St Luke’s gardens and included live music, face painting and craft activities along with cream teas and refreshments. Visitors were able to add the names of their loved ones to the St Luke’s Book of Celebration, printed on special seeded paper that will be planted in the hospice gardens to create a special wildflower area.

On Saturday 17 June the Friends of Birkdale school hosted their annual ball at Baldwin’s Omega. Over 150 guests were welcomed to the ball by the school’s acclaimed jazz band Octopus. This year there was a very special welcome as Theo the Bear, the Children’s Hospital Charity mascot, was on hand to shake hands with guests as they arrived for this prestigious event. This year the event, together with a charity auction raising the simply incredible amount of £6,000 for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital – the school’s charity this year.

IN BRIEF

L-R: Melanie Jackson, Molly McGreevy, Paul Stimpson, Jessica Slaughter

RMC MEDIA LAUNCHES NEW OPERATION RMC Media, one of the north’s leading independent media organisations, is delighted to announce the recruitment of a specialist team to assist their clients with their digital marketing campaigns. Experienced media sales executive, Melanie Jackson, heads up the new RMC Digital Desk along with RMC head of digital Richard Smith. The team is completed by digital editor, Molly McGreevy; sales executive, Jess Slaughter and digital assistant, Paul Stimpson. RMC’s online magazine, Sheffield Vibe, was launched under a year ago and has already built a loyal following of users seeking to find out what’s happening in Sheffield and who are the personalities driving the city’s recent growth. “It’s a really exciting time to be in Sheffield at the moment,” commented Melanie. “We let our audience know which bars and restaurants are opening, or planning to open. We talk about bands, concerts and everything that makes this city tick. ‘Shouting about Sheffield’ is our tagline and it’s clearly working as we’re averaging 25,000 unique users a month and with our combined social media reach we’re achieving figures in excess of 200,000. “Our clients too are clearly impressed as we’ve created campaigns on Vibe for leading brands such as Vedett Lager, Pago Juice and closer to home, Atkinsons Department Store and Haus Estate Agency.” RMC plans to launch similar Vibe sites in Leeds and Manchester shortly. “In addition to Vibe each of our nine printed magazines has an accompanying website,” said RMC Media joint managing director, John Murphy. “The sites feature local content and are ideal options for our clients who want both a print and an online presence.” All the titles, including Vibe, have Facebook pages, Twitter and Instagram accounts, which boast more than 40,000 followers. One Facebook story recently generated a reach of 86,000. “Now we’ve got a dedicated team we can advise clients on how best they can take advantage of our large social media following and also on how we can improve their own digital and social media presence,” said Melanie.

Hospice patient’s memory lives on Almost £25,000 has now been donated in memory of a former Rotherham Hospice patient, David Middleton. He was wellknown at Bramall Lane as the enthusiastic Blades supporter in a bright yellow sweatshirt behind the kop goal. Sheffield Print Fair The annual one-day Sheffield Print Fair is held at St Mary’s Church and Community Centre and run solely on a charitable basis. All the money raised after costs from application fees and ticket sales is returned to St Mary’s in support of their charitable work in the city and surrounding areas. This years’ event promises to be bigger and better with over 40 selected printmakers from all over the UK expected to exhibit. Exhibitors are curated from applications received by local, national and international established and emerging print artists, who work with a wide range of techniques from lino cutting to lithography in order to give the visiting public at the fair an insight into the diverse art form that is fine art printmaking. The organisers have secured promotional support for the event from Sheffield based online selling platform Folksy, with additional support from Sheffield City of Makers and York based industry supplier Hawthorn Printmakers. The event will be at St Mary’s Church and Community Centre, Bramall Lane on 11 November 2017 10am-4.30pm.

Very few items possess the same sartorial power that shoes do. Worthwhile investment NO LONGER WANTING TO NEGLECT HER DIET, SARA ASQUITH TURNED TO ALEVERE THERAPY AT G&M HEALTHCARE FOR HELP. A CHANGE IN LIFESTYLE HAS PAID DIVIDENDS. y weight had steadily increased over the years because I found myself in a vicious cycle. I had tried several diets where I would lose a couple of pounds, but I always found ways to cheat and go back to old habits.” Sara Asquith was worried her demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for her to lose weight, however, as soon as she started the Alevere programme, she was committed to changing her life. “I travel a lot for work and it was getting difficult to choose food that was good for me. I’d forget all about the hidden calories and eat snacks on the go, followed by big meals late in the evening. “I never seemed to be able to get my weight under control and weighing in at 12st 5lb, it got to a point where I knew something had to give. “I had seen advertisements for Alevere Therapy at G&M Healthcare and decided to give it a go.” Combining high quality, flavoursome foods and state-of-theart ultrasound technology, Alevere is a personalised, GP-led treatment and diet plan, which, under strict medical supervision, can help you lose between 1-2 stone a month. It involves a series of treatments including weekly one-to-one therapy sessions, skin and connective tissue therapy and nutritional therapy, which consists of high protein meals uniquely formulated to assist rapid weight loss. Your nutritional plan is accurately

monitored throughout the programme, ensuring blood sugar levels are stable at all times, and the metabolic rate is kept high and not suppressed, which often occurs with other means of weight loss. On reaching your target, your weight is then stabilised and with the assistance of accurate measurements of your body’s metabolism, G&M guide you through long term maintenance, with personal monthly follow-up appointments. “I wouldn’t say Alevere is easy – it took will power, and it’s important to understand that your metabolic rate is an individual thing. But once you start, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away. “It made it easier having sachets, because my only choice was what flavour I could have, and I soon realised I could manage on a lot less food. “I took it one day at a time and seeing the fast rate of weight loss every week kept me focused.” Like everyone, Sara hit the occasional rut, but she received lots of support. “Alevere is more than a diet. There’s always a line of communication and support available and G&M helped me uncover the psychology behind my dysfunctional eating. “The thing I found most difficult was no alcohol and going on holiday was a challenge, but I spoke to my therapists Sarah and Leyanna once a week and they helped me make permanent adjustments to my lifestyle. “I did come back two pounds heavier, but

once my philosophy had changed, it was easy to shift. “My husband was also really supportive and by eating healthily like me, he lost two stone – you don’t get more motivational than that.” Since starting the programme Sara has lost 2st 3lb and has continued to stabilise her weight. “When I first wore the dress in the ‘after’ photo the buttons wouldn’t close, but now I have to wear a belt because it’s too big. “I’m always somewhere between 10st 1lb and 10st 3lb, and I can’t believe how good I feel.” Though Alevere has been life-changing for Sara physically, the biggest change has been mental. “The programme changes your relationship with food. It makes you more aware of how your body works, so you can break the cycle. “I used to eat way too much, but now I plan ahead and make sure I prepare my own food to take to conferences. It’s all about finding that happy balance. “I’d definitely recommend Alevere. You do have to be in the right place mentally to commit – you can’t do it half-hearted – but it’s a completely worthwhile investment. G&M healthcare also offer cosmetic treatments. Terri-Ann with her team (above), with her children (below) and with her book (right)

Easy as 1, 2, 3 DETERMINED TO LOSE WEIGHT, TERRI-ANN NUNNS DEVISED HER OWN DIET PLAN – AND NOW HAS 72,000 PEOPLE ASKING FOR HER ADVICE. fter struggling with her weight for many years, Terri-Ann Nunns took the unusual step and created her own diet plan. Four years down the line she has become something of a diet guru, and her 123 Diet Plan is highly sought after. Suffering the loss of her newborn daughter in 2005 and having two pregnancies in quick succession caused Terri-Ann to find solace in food. As a result of this her weight increased, her marriage broke down, she lost her job and suffered depression. After gradually re-building her life and meeting her now husband Michael Nunns, Terri-Ann decided it was time to focus on her weight. “Michael is five years younger than me and when we went out on New Year’s Eve, I saw the photographs and felt really down. So in January 2011, I decided enough was enough and I was determined to lose the weight.” After conventional diets failed, Terri-Ann took the unusual step of making up her own diet. “I combined bits of diet I had tried before, but added in more carbs. I just played around with food for a few months and I lost threeand-a-half stone. “I put my weight loss journey pictures online, lots of people were curious and it really took off from there.” Terri-Ann then put pen to paper and

created a book full of all her diet tips. As it got busier, she took the risk of leaving her PA job to focus on the diet plan full time – and with now 72,000 users it is clear this risk has paid off. “The reason the plan is so successful is because we understand that everyone has different goals and objectives. I created the plan to suit real people.” The plan is broken into three simple steps, starting at the ten-day boost through to the maintenance stage. It is simply a high protein diet with limited carbs, so you can eat as much fish, meat and poultry, vegetables fruit, quinoa and sweet potatoes, but steer clear of white potatoes, white and brown rice, white bread and pasta. Terri-Ann has also recently re-vamped her popular recipe book, which can be bought online. She’s teamed up with local chef Michael Price to create some wonderful exclusive healthy recipes. What’s special about The Terri-Ann 123 Diet Plan is that not only offers meal plans, workouts and recipes for each stage but also includes 500 online recipes, exercise videos, newsletters along with 18 hours per day of online member support. “At 123 we are a little family. Everyone who has joined has been in the same situation like me and tried every diet under the sun. I am always very upfront with all of my

members and all just want to help each other.” Terri-Ann has also started her Meet and Greet UK tour, where you can learn all about what the diet can offer you. The Terri-Ann 123 Diet Plan, including lifetime membership, starts from £19.99. If you live in Doncaster, then pop into the office to have a chat to the team or visit her website for a detailed description of what the plan entails. “I didn’t start this as a business, I started it to help people lose weight. The most important thing for me is always helping people succeed on the diet. I will always be developing the plan as much as I can to provide the best for my members.” Terri-Ann 123 Diet Plan Head office, 16 Ellers Road, Doncaster, DN4 7BA Tel: 01302 278285 Email: office@terriann123dietplan.co.uk www.terriann123dietplan.co.uk

Expert – York Marathon

It may be sold out, but we have charity places for the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon on Sunday 8 October. This popular and picturesque run, with fantastic PB potential, takes participants past some of York’s most historic sights and along scenic country lanes, making it an attractive prospect for runners of all abilities. How your money changes lives

By running for The Children’s Hospital Charity you’ll help fund a life-changing chemical analysis machine for Sheffield Children’s Hospital’s chemical laboratory. The machine is the gold standard for the diagnosis of vitamin D deficiency and will benefit thousands of young children every year. While the impact of Vitamin D levels on bone health has long been known, the effects on other conditions have only more recently been explored. These include dermatological conditions, mental health, allergies, gastroenterological health and cardiac disorder. In the community, GPs may send a referral for Vitamin D analysis if patients

present with symptoms such as constant tiredness, skin complaints, bone pain and muscle weakness. People at most risk of Vitamin D deficiency include those with poor dietary intake, children who are not getting enough sunlight and people with darker skin. Poor vitamin D intake can cause soft bones in children, or rickets – a condition that is on the rise. Early identification of vitamin D deficiency can prevent conditions like rickets going undiagnosed, preventing the potential for lifelong disability and musculoskeletal problems. Limited race places available, secure your place through events@tchc.org.uk or www.tchc.org.uk

through recommendations. She explains how she has incorporated her daughter into the company to help mothers of the bride. Two women discussing their passions in catering are Donna Santos, the joint owner of Italian restaurant and bar Casa Mia, who juggles her own personal life with managing accounts, setting up the restaurant, training staff and meeting customers, and Jariya Sancunakorn of Patoo Thai, who stresses the importance of giving customers fresh food and experiencing the art of Thai cuisine. Both of these women want to encourage young women coming into business to be innovative. We also meet Stephanie Connelly of The Old School House Nursery Schools. Stephanie offers parents a chance to give their children quality care and education. This motivated woman wants all children to have access to extensive resources and to have enjoyment from their education.

b.biscuit in Hunters Bar is a baby and children's boutique specialising in fun, comfortable and organic clothing. They recently launched a website and send orders all over the world. Business owner Katie Handley runs the business around her two children, working in the shop three days a week and spends her evenings doing admin, buying stock, packing web orders and keeping the website up to date. She plans to expand the shop

in the next few years. “We are already bursting at the seams and there are loads more fantastic ranges and products I would like to stock,” she says. Katie’s ambitions are to keep building the brand and to continue sourcing exciting and unique products. Her advice is to prepare to work hard. “You have to work 24/7. It can be lonely and you may question yourself, but when things go well, you have a great sense of achievement.”

Donnas Santos is the joint owner of traditional Italian restaurant and bar, Casa Mia. In a nutshell, Donna manages the daily accounts and table plans, shops for top quality local produce, sets up the restaurant for service, liaises with the head chef over the menu and stock, trains staff and meets, greets and serves customers. She’s also currently busy sourcing vegan products that are not only healthy but tasty, to add to the menu and would like to set up a voluntary organisation, working with young adults who might have ‘lost their way’.

“I want to guide young adults into the hotel and catering industry. This profession is taken seriously and I hope it will give them confidence, a sense of selfworth and long-term job prospects,” says Donna. And that’s not all, although the restaurant already has a fantastic outside space, her goal is to transform it into an alfresco summer beer/wine garden by 2018. Her advice to other women in business: enjoy what you do, always lead by example and keep a keen eye on your competition.

Sue Robinson of Clinica Aesthetics Sue Robinson is the owner of Clinica Aesthetics, a medical aesthetic clinic offering a range of injectables, peels and other nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. Her aim is to make clients look and feel their best without major surgery, and one of the things she values most is the relationships she builds. Clients come to her for a free consultation, discussion about their concerns and detailed skin analysis, in order to assess the best treatment options. As a nurse independent prescriber, Sue can write and order prescriptions – this is different to many other practitioners and nurses who require patients to visit a doctor/NIP. Sue then administers the procedure, with a follow-up appointment after three weeks, to check the results and make adjustments if required. Sue retired from the NHS and

set up her own practice in 2014. Initially, she focused on the most popular treatments, however, by getting to know her patients and their concerns, and accessing as much training as possible, she keeps on top of medical developments and makes sure her treatments are at the cutting edge of medical aesthetic practice. “Having turned 57 this year, I’m not aiming for world domination, but I love what I do and wish I’d taken the plunge years ago. I’d love to be in a position to train others in my field. I’ve been lucky enough to find a fantastic mentor within the industry and would love to help others in the same way.” Her advice to other would-be women in business: know your market, build a network and be fearless. “People will tell you you’re crazy for taking the risk, but if you don’t try, you’ll always regret it.”

Jariya Sancunakorn owns authentic Thai restaurant Patoo Thai on Ecclesall Road and spends her days sourcing and preparing fresh ingredients and Thai vegetables for Patoo’s traditional menu. Jariya likes to keep things fresh, whether that be the ingredients she uses in her dishes or the menu itself, and the restaurant introduces a new special menu every two months. “The freshness of ingredients is important in all of our recipes. The other important thing is the presentation of the dish. We want our customers to experience not only the taste, but the art of Thai cuisine.” Looking ahead, Jariya would love to add a sushi line to the menu, and, as well as having the ambition to grow an already successful business even further, she is keen to remind other

women in business to continue to be innovative. “We need to ensure we’re upto-date with the world gone by. There are so many new technology developments and things can change so quickly and easily.”

Zoe McBurnie of The Bakewell Tart Shop & Coffee House Zoe McBurnie is the director of The Bakewell Tart Shop & Coffee House, famous for selling fresh bread, cakes, traditional Bakewell tarts, pies, pasties and gifts. And that’s not all. The coffee shop and Twinings specialist tea rooms boast a private outdoor courtyard, where the team serve up the very best sandwiches, toasties, jacket potatoes, hot and cold drinks, traditional home-made fare and afternoon teas. “We have a unique selling point – the traditional Bakewell Tart – and over the years I have used this to be diverse, posting tarts over the world. “We also supply outdoor events, which are very popular, and we’re regularly asked to take our tarts and cakes to food festivals.” Zoe’s day to day operations include setting up the shop with freshly baked products – 90 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

“presentation is key to the success of the business” she says – greeting customers and providing a second-to-none experience, coupled with quality food and drink. Zoe also plans to keep the shop running under the family name for many more years to come. “Having owned the shop for 16 years, I plan for my daughter take over. She’s young, energetic and enthusiastic and will be able to continue the success of the business, no doubt taking it to another level. “I will semi-retire and do all the behind the scene roles, giving Amy the guidance and support she will need on her new venture.” Her advice to other would-be women in business: to be successful, you need to be passionate about what you are selling, but also get the work/life balance correct.

JULIE TYSON / Alchemist Aesthetics Type of business.

Skin lounge and clinic What is your role in your company?

Managing director. How did you end up in this type of business?

Before opening my own clinic, I worked for a leading UK cosmetic surgery company, but had always dreamed of launching my own business. So I purchased and established Alchemist Aesthetics with the intention of bringing a touch of Hollywood glamour to Sheffield. Based on top London stores and Harley Street practices, I wanted to create a comfortable and luxurious setting in which clients could enjoy advanced anti-ageing and rejuvenating treatments. But more than that, it’s my belief that looking good is feeling good and that everyone deserves to feel confident in their appearance. Going beyond skincare, we offer a range of the very latest non-invasive treatments for both men and women who want to create and maintain a youthful appearance. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

It’s extremely important to visit an experienced professional who will design a

You’re promised a confidential and discreet service, with a team of aesthetics experts working with you to provide the very best advice. Everyone will notice but no one will know your secret to looking younger, fresher and more youthful. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

Our stunning clinic is designed to make you feel relaxed and at ease as you enjoy your treatment programme in elegant and luxury surroundings. From the moment you enter the reception, you will receive a warm welcome from our friendly staff who will be on hand to explain our range of services and introduce you to one of our aesthetics treatments specialists. BEV HALES / Timber Windows of Sheffield by Prestige Window Systems Type of business.

Installation of timber and timber alternative windows and doors. What is your role in your company?

I offer design support for our clients when considering window or door replacement. As we don’t employ salesmen, this includes initial visits to clients’ homes, to learn the story of the house and what will work within a given property type and budget. How did you end up in this type of business?

My husband Chris has worked in this industry since he was 14 years old. Chris has the perfect temperament for fitting timber windows – just the right level of OCD – and after 30+ years of working in the industry, it felt right for us to work together in our own business, which we began in 2009 as Prestige Window Systems. Chris and his fitters have over 80 years of experience between them, which is important when you’re working on older properties.

differences in the outcome of how your windows will look and perform depending on what you select. Clients need the right information to make an informed choice and all too often I’m asked to visit clients who have chosen what they felt was a good product, only to find five or six years down the line, the windows are letting in water, expanding/ contracting and worse than that, rotting. In our showroom you can see a selection of full-size, fully-finished working frames to gauge the quality of manufacture for yourselves, and this gives clients a benchmark to compare against others in the market. Believe it or not, the large national companies don’t have any showrooms in the UK and rely on small corner samples to show customers their products.

Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

Within the timber window industry you have small joinery companies working alongside large national brands offering various levels of manufacture quality. There are distinct

What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

We work on a variety of properties, from modern constructions to Grade II listed, and everything in between. We’re accredited to fit to Building Regulation Standards and the installation experience of our fitters is second to none. Marry that with our attention to detail and the fact that we genuinely enjoy the work that we do and I don’t think you’d find a better combination. Independent reviews for our work can be checked at https://www.reviews.co.uk/companyreviews/store/prestige-window-systems Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

In 2016 we opened our new showroom ‘Timber Windows of Sheffield’ on Ecclesall Road and we’re working hard to establish ourselves in this new location. Even though we’ve been working in Sheffield since 2009, many clients are still learning about us, so our short-term aim is to increase our profile now that we’re settled in. Our long-term plan is to open a second showroom, specialising in some of the fantastically unique products now available in the window market. Watch this space for future developments.

GRAHAM TAYLOR / Taylor Made Gardens & Landscaping Ltd. Type of business.

Gardening and landscaping. What is your role in your company?

Company director. How did you end up in this type of business?

I’m a very outdoor person and have always had an interest in gardening. I decided to set up the business five years ago when I was frequently getting asked to help out family and friends with their gardens. I made the decision to make it a full time business, and over time it is continuing to grow. Currently we have a team of five working for Taylor Made Gardens & Landscaping Ltd (TMG). Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

The majority of our work is through word of mouth and recommendations from existing customers. At TMGL we try our upmost to listen to the specifications of our customers and work with them to agree plans within their budget. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

TMGL offer every part of gardening and landscaping, from weekly maintenance to full garden makeovers and everything in between. Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

PAUL SMITH / Moonlight Textiles Type of business.

Maker, supplier and installer of bespoke curtains, tracks, poles and blinds. What is your role in your company?

Managing director. How did you end up in this type of business?

I helped in the family party-planning business whilst at college. By the time I’d finished my studies the business had progressed onto selling ready-made curtains and it was naturally assumed that I’d join the business full-time, so I did. Fast-forward over 30 years and we now specialise in all aspects of made-to-measure curtains, blinds and related products. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

It can be a major purchase and you do not want to get it wrong. We advise on suitable fabrics and finishes, take responsibility for the correct measurements being taken and manage the making and installation of the product. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

Many of the Moonlight team have been with

us for more than 20 years and have a wealth of experience in the trade. Therefore we can offer qualified, informed advice to our customers in store or at home. We are not fazed by specialist products like bay poles, decorative metal bay tracks and blinds. In our contract division we advise on, and provide, the latest in heavy commercial applications, cubicle rails, anti-ligature products and flame-retardant fabrics. When it comes to bespoke products of any type, I’d always advise that you rely on the experts to provide a quality finish and service.

Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

We reported last year that we had taken on an apprentice and I’m pleased to announce she has now become a permanent, fully paid up member of the Moonlight team. Whilst initially I was a little sceptical about embarking on the apprenticeship scheme, I now know that if you give the right person the right opportunity, it can pay dividends for both the apprentice and employer in the long term. Something to certainly consider for the future.

BRANDEN DAVIDSON / Beau Vale Developments Type of business.

Construction and building renovation. What is your role in your company?

Owner. How did you end up in this type of business?

I studied fine art before moving into design, construction and civil engineering. I’ve now been in the building industry for the best part of 30 years.

Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

Choosing to renovate, extend or remodel is a decision no-one should make on a whim, or without the right kind of advice. Not only do we take pride in being able to take on all aspects of the building process, but we also have a design-led approach, meaning we take special care to make sure every detail of our work is just right.

Most of our projects are handled in-house, but we’re also happy to bring in subcontractors for specialised elements where needed. We also believe that building good customer relationships is just as important as building structures and we get most of our clients through recommendation. We start building relationships with our clients from day one. Dealing with clients personally, talking through quotes and looking over project plans is all part of the service. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

We specialise in oak frames, as well as extensions, renovations, remodelling, house building, conservation work and loft and cellar conversions. Whatever look you envisage for your home, we can source the right products and people for the job. Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

We deliver projects to clients across Sheffield, Derbyshire and the surrounding areas and though we mostly work on home projects, we have worked and can work on commercial buildings and even estates, such as Chatsworth.

EATING OUT

Worthy winner RECENTLY VOTED ‘BEST ORIENTAL’ AT THE WESTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS, PATOO THAI PROVED TO PHOEBE SEYMOUR WHY IT IS DESERVING OF ITS TITLE. usually feel like selecting a set menu at an Oriental restaurant is a bit of a cop-out, but when you’re looking at a menu as extensive and delicious as Patoo Thai’s, you need all the help you can get. In fact, the team at this traditional Thai on Ecclesall Road are only too happy to help. We were lucky to have owner Jariya Sancunakorn advising us. Jariya has been giving customers warm welcomes and hot curries since 2010. Patoo was recently awarded Best Oriental Restaurant at Westside for the fourth year running – and I was soon to discover this was a well-deserved accolade. It’s the little details that make a big difference – beautiful plates with handpainted gold and yellow rims, napkins cleverly folded to look like candles and waitresses wearing gold embroidered blue and purple traditional dresses. After two bottles of Thailand’s awardwinning beer, Chang (£3.50), we selected the Bangkok set menu for two (£22.95 per person). Jariya also suggested we add a couple of soups to our order and we were happy to benefit from her expert knowledge. We started with assorted Patoo starters,

I

which included succulent satay chicken on sticks, vegetable spring rolls, spare ribs in thick sweet sauce, tempura prawns and khanompang na gai (deep fried chicken and sesame seed toast) accompanied by sweet chilli sauce and mango dips. For our second course, I had the tom yum (£5.95) – their most-popular soup – packed full of juicy prawns and moreish mushrooms. Like all good Thai soups, it was tangy and spicy. My partner had the tom kha (£4.95), a cooler soup with coconut milk, chicken and Thai galangal roots. Onto mains, we indulged in a banquet of red chicken curry, beef stir fried with chili and basil leaves, chicken stir fried with cashew nuts, along with an egg-fried rice and a delightfully sticky coconut rice. Served in a candle-heated dish, the red curry was still bubbling when it reached us and had aniseed flavour coming through. The toasted, crunchy cashews gave the sweet chicken stir fry a satisfying texture, whilst the beef stir fry was salty and filled with tender pieces of meat. Onto dessert, the restaurant has a quirky selection of ice creams ordered in from local

business, Yee Kwan. Though intrigued by the black sesame seed flavour, my partner had a creamy scoop of toasted coconut ice cream to go with his warm slice of chocolate cake (£5.50). Meanwhile, I had a cup of hot Thai tea (£3.50) – a sweet and lightly spiced tea topped with thick and cool cream – a real comfort drink. When you hear a lot of great things about a restaurant you’ve never been too, it has a lot to live up to, but with their impeccable service and impressive dishes, Patoo Thai really does provide the whole package. EATING OUT

A fine idea A LEISURELY LUNCH WAS JUST THE TICKET FOR CHRIS WILSON. et’s do lunch. Now there’s a phrase we don’t hear often enough these days. While culinary trends come and go, one food-lover’s staple that has been sadly neglected in recent years has been the simple pleasure of taking time out in the middle of the day for a spot of leisurely refuelling. In business circles it’s seen almost as a sign of weakness. “Meet for lunch? I’m far too busy; lucky to have ten minutes to grab a sandwich at my desk.” The implication there, of course, is that if you do have the time, then you obviously aren’t pulling your weight back at the coalface. Well I’m sorry but I don’t swallow that. Every now and then, to escape from the work environment for an hour (or even a few minutes more) and enjoy good food in smart surroundings is an absolute joy... and if you are heading back to the office it may even make you more productive and less prone to the dreaded mid-afternoon slump. Thankfully, the good people at Silversmiths feel the same way and recently introduced a ‘fine dining’ lunch menu. New head chef John Cluckie has arrived at this popular city centre diner with lots of bright ideas and an impressive CV including spells working with Christian Kent at the fondly-remembered Blue Room at Woodseats and as a development chef for Marco Pierre White. Meanwhile new restaurant manager Tina Gage, recently at the Devonshire Arms at

Dore, has been concentrating on softening the look of the shoebox-shaped dining area with feminine touches, putting some art on the walls and fresh flowers on the tables. There’s a new a la carte menu for the evenings, while at lunch there is a nice blend of restaurant classics, daily specials and lighter dishes for those who don’t want the full blow-out. There’s a great wine list too with some interesting finds including a good selection by the glass, essential for early diners who are up for a spot of indulgence but not quite willing to write off the rest of the day. Lunch began with starters that were bursting with flavour yet not too heavily textured. A pressed ham hock with pickled vegetables, peas and mustard dressing (£6.50) was meaty and delicious. Throw in some new potatoes or a fresh baguette and you’d have had the making of a robust main course; as it was this very moreish dish was a wake-up call for the tastebuds. Similarly light was a pleasing platter of salmon gravadlax (£6) served with orange, radish and cucumber salad and mini-loaf. For mains, two contrasting dishes both showed a commitment to robust flavours with excellent seasoning. A tender duck leg (£16) was bathing in a gorgeous mixed bean cassoulet with a stock so flavoursome, every last spoonful demanded to be slurped. Equally impressive was a perfectly cooked fillet of salmon (£15), with moist flesh and good

colour on the crispy skin. Classy accompaniments of Pomme Anna potatoes, aubergine purée and roast vine tomatoes completed a winning picture. From that smart wine list, glasses of a refreshing Yorkshire-made white (Madelaine Angevine £6.50) and a soft, rounded Rioja (£7.50) made sure lunch went smoothly. And for a sweet finale, a dazzling deconstructed peach melba (£6) with white chocolate mousse, raspberry sponge, peach sorbet and melba sauce and an apple and pear Battenberg (£5.50) with delicious smooth cream and honeycomb crunch rounded things off beautifully. After a good strong cappuccino (£2.80) it was back to work for me. So how was my productivity after this daring break from the daily grind? Through the roof, of course... bosses and bean counters, take note. Silversmiths 111 Arundel Street, Sheffield S1 2NT Tel: 0114 270 6160 www.silversmiths-restaurant.com

Winners’ party MY FATHERS HEART THREW A LAVISH PARTY FOR THE WINNERS OF THIS YEAR’S WESTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS. PHOEBE SEYMOUR REPORTS. t was a party to remember... and the luxury kitchen showroom of My Fathers Heart proved to be the perfect setting when the winners of the 2017 Westside Restaurant Awards were invited to come together for a celebration of culinary excellence. With fabulous fizz and a selection of wonderful wines and beers provided by Robinsons Brewery, this was a chance for the chefs and owners of the region’s finest eating establishments to come together and reflect on their successes over the last 12 months. My Fathers Heart had sponsored the Westside Restaurant Awards, staged at Baldwins Omega, with Robinsons adding to the fun as drinks sponsors. After all the tensions of waiting to see who would be crowned as the best of the best, this was a much more relaxed affair. Our winners were able to take a break from their own kitchens and enjoy food created on the spot by Bora demonstration chefs, using My Fathers Heart’s stunning and fullyfunctioning display kitchens. Also present to congratulate the winners

were RMC Media’s joint managing directors John Murphy and Martin Edwards, managing editor Chris Wilson and our awards compere, Great British Bake-Off contestant Howard Middleton. The Samuel Fox Country Inn were this year’s ultimate winners, having scooped both Best Contemporary and the Restaurant of the Year award. Co-owner and chef patron, James Duckett said: “I enjoyed the award winners’ party. I spoke to the other restaurateurs and had a mingle – it was a lovely night. “We were competing against a lot of good restaurants and it’s been a tough year – for all the restaurant industry I think – so winning was unexpected. “But I think what makes us special is we bring the element of surprise. We look like an ordinary working Derbyshire pub, but then you step inside and see it’s very smart. We do traditional food, but it’s presented in a modern way. “We plan to keep building on what we’ve achieved so far. Our aim is to create a positive environment and make both our

team and our customers happy. Thanks for Westside’s support.” Owner Chris Mapp and the team from The Tickled Trout were also celebrating a double win having taken the Best Pub and Young Chef of the Year. Dave Cockerill beat three other contestants to win the title of Young Chef of the Year, after a MasterChef style cook-off, using the working kitchens at the My Fathers Heart showroom. Dave said: “I didn’t expect to win, but I’m really proud that I did it. Everyone from The Tickled Trout team have been really supportive – they were quite loud at the awards! Chris Mapp is wanting to put my signature dish on the menu.” Other winners enjoying the party included Brocco on the Park, which won Best Hotel Restaurant, Rossi’s (Best Italian), The Hyde Park Inn (Best Family Friendly) and The Front Room (Best Newcomer). Tiina Carr, owner of Brocco on the Park, said: “I don’t think we see ourselves as being ‘hotel food’ really. We have Brocco Kitchen,

then we have the hotel separate. We want to get ourselves established as an independent destination and for people to know who we are and what we do.” Tom O’Reilly, co-owner of The Hyde Park Inn said: “It’s good to get recognised and to know what we are doing is working. It’s just a matter of time before more and more people know what we have to offer. It’s a good place for an all-round family event.” Vito Restaino, owner of Rossi’s, said: “We’ve been open 30 years now, and I’ve been there 14 of these. We’ve got a lot of

loyal customers. There’s always been a lot of competition when it comes to Italian restaurants in Sheffield and some have come and gone. Touch wood, Rossi’s is a constant on the restaurant scene.” Jonathan Coulthard, owner of My Fathers Heart added: “We’ve got the winners of all the different categories of the Westside Restaurant of the Year Awards drinking wine and eating good food. “They are in a beautiful showroom we are very proud of. It always amuses me that we have five kitchens downstairs – the perfect party venue since everyone ends up in the kitchen at parties. “It’s been a lot of fun working with RMC Media on the Westside Restaurant Awards and we will definitely be collaborating on more events in the future – absolutely.” To find out what happened at the Westside Restaurant of the Year Awards and to view more photos from the night, visit the events page on the RMC Media website at www.rmcmedia.co.uk.

Tried, tested, approved IT’S WELL KNOWN – AND FOR GOOD REASON. HANNAH SANDERS ENJOYS AN EVENING AT ONE OF THE CITY’S FIRST BALTI HOUSES. heffield has some fantastic Indian restaurants, but I hold a soft spot for the city’s first authentic balti house. With gleaming white walls, a selection of contemporary pictures and the subtle sound of Indian music playing in the background, Butler’s Balti House creates a real sense of occasion. The menu contains plenty of classic or speciality dishes to choose from including an extensive selection of vegetarian options. What I like most about Butler’s is they cater for all types of dietary needs including dairy free, vegan and gluten intolerance. If there is something you fancy simply ask the staff and they will be happy to accommodate you. The staff are perhaps the most attentive in the city, and we were greeted as if we were life-long friends. After being seated, our server brought over our drinks of house red wine (175ml £3.50) for myself, and a large coke (£3.50) for my partner. Poppadoms and pickle trays were brought over whilst we chose our dishes, with an impressive seven pickles to choose from in a range of spice levels, from sweet mango to a revitalising mint and coriander dip, all bursting with freshness.

S

Our starters of onion bhajis (£3.25), chicken samosa (£3.25) and tandoori chicken wings (£3.50) were laid in front of us – the colours were bright and the mix of tempting aromas filled the air. The samosa was packed with punches of flavour, and the pastry was light and crispy. The bhajis were deep red in colour, soft, moist and slightly sweet. However, the winner of the night for my partner was the tandoori chicken wings which were tender, crispy and had incredible depth of flavour. After a brief pause, our mains took centre stage, along with those all-important side dishes, and where to start was the question that sprung to mind. There was so much to savour: Balti saag aloo (£4.25), a delicious combination of spinach, potatoes and spices; peshwari naan (£2.95) with crispy edges and a soft centre packed full of a fruit and nut mixture, along with the pilau rice (£2.75) and garlic rice (£2.95) which complemented our curries beautifully. I opted for the Balti lemon chicken (£8.50), consisting of chicken tikka cooked in medium spices. The sauce was surprisingly light and the undertones of lemon added a freshness that brought out the slight spice of

the chicken. My partner chose one of Butler’s ‘golden oldie’ dishes – the Rogan josh special (£9.50), which came with king prawns, lamb and chicken tikka. With its rustic flavours, garnished with a generous helping of fried tomatoes and onions, this medium spiced curry stole the show. I’d call Butler’s Balti House a find, but it has already established itself as one of the finest authentic curry houses in Sheffield. With its attention to detail, skilled chefs and efficient staff, if you haven’t already sampled the food I would highly recommend doing so. Caffeine hit WITH THE PROMISE OF ‘SIMPLY THE BEST CUP OF COFFEE’, HANNAH SANDERS’ EXPECTATIONS OF DERBYSHIRE’S INSOMNIA CAFE WERE HIGH. s we were winding through the country lanes, the city disappeared from the rear view and I was looking forward to spending an afternoon among the rolling hills of the Peak District. On then to Insomnia, which is aptly named given the amount of caffeine we managed to consume during our Friday afternoon lunch stop. Walking to the café we were greeted by a selection of hanging baskets in full bloom, and the sweet aromas of summer were hanging on in the air. Towering above was a sign stating “simply the best cup of coffee everytime” which, as an avid caffeine addict, I was keen to put to the test. With its contemporary décor, green, black and chequered chairs and an added splash of bright orange stools, I felt immediately relaxed and at home as me and my partner and I took a seat on the plush sofa by the window. We began our lunch with coffee, a soya latte for myself (£2.35) and a cappuccino for my companion (£2.35). The coffee is Fairtrade and packs a punch (if I wasn’t awake beforehand I certainly was after) but with its smooth, rich taste went down a treat. After browsing through the food choices

for a while, we couldn’t decide what to have so we brought in the experts. The staff were all smiles throughout our visit and were more than happy to offer recommendations. I opted for the falafel and hummus hero (£3.95), served in a deliciously fresh wholemeal pita bread, tightly packed with a selection of roasted vegetables and crispy lettuce. The falafel was bursting full of fragrant and aromatic herbs creating an exotic Mediterranean flavour, and the slight spice only added to my enjoyment. My friend went for the Grande chicken and chorizo fiesta panini (£3.95). She opted to have the sandwich warmed and the chicken was moist and tender. The bread was delightfully crisp, and when paired with the slightly spicy chorizo and oozing mozzarella left her mouth tingling to the final bite. We shared a gluten-free chicken Caesar crunch salad (£4.75), with sliced chicken, smoked streaky bacon, Grana Padano and slow roasted tomatoes and it was bursting with freshness. After a brief respite watching the world go by, we were ready to tackle tea and cakes. We opted to share and chose the London fog earl grey and blackcurrant cake (£2.30), salted caramel and nut slice (£1.95) and, we

couldn’t say no to a mini macaroon (£1). The cake was moist, the hint of earl grey with its citrus aftertaste was complemented by the sweetness of the blackcurrant drizzle, while the slice was luxurious with its crumbly base, rich layer of caramel and assortment of nuts layered on top. The raspberry macaroon went perfectly with our fruit teas, Chun Mee green tea (£1.95) for myself and berry fruity (£1.95) for my dining partner. Insomnia is a hidden gem and worth a visit if you are looking for a relaxing afternoon lunch in the Peak District. Insomnia Café Kingsgate, Hope Valley Derbyshire, S32 3WY Tel: 01433 639458

A THING OF BEAUTY Good news for all you Audi R8 Spyder fans, the Spyder is now available with the astronomically ballistic upgraded 602hp V10 from the R8 Plus Coupe. Named the R8 Spyder V10 Plus, the extra horses and the 25kg reduced weight propel the car from rest in 3.3 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than the model below – and sends it all the way to a top speed of 203mph, 6mph

faster than the ‘normal’ 540hp Spyder model. The electronic folding roof can raise or lower in 20 seconds at speeds up to 31mph if required. You’ll want to lower the roof as often as possible though as the noise this naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 makes is something truly special. Available to order now. Priced from £147,470.

SPEED AND SPACE DOMINATE THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.

Bigger and better After the release of the much anticipated Insignia hatch we now have this, the Sports Tourer. The Sports Tourer is on sale now priced from £18,685. It’s based on a completely new vehicle architecture, and its revised proportions result in more luggage capacity that has increased to 1,665 litres, 135 litres, more than the outgoing model. The length of the boot has grown by 97mm to 2005mm and 40/20/40 foldable seats are standard across the range. Based on the 2013 Monza Concept, the Insignia Sports Tourer holds a very sophisticated and good-looking design. It’s 200kg lighter than the previous model, comes with an all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring and a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Engines range from 108-256hp including an all-new 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit.

For all weathers The E-Class All-Terrain Estate is to Mercedes- Benz what the A4 Avant Allroad is to Audi. It’s essentially a jacked-up edition of the E-Class estate, which is more capable of tackling adverse weather and road conditions thanks to its 39mm increased ride height. The E-Class All-Terrain Estate comes with standard 4MATIC all-wheeldrive, a nine-speed automatic gearbox and one efficient diesel engine, badged E350d. This 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 generates 258 hp and emits 179g/km, achieving 41.5 mpg, a vmax of 155mph and a 0-62 mph time of 6.2 seconds. Standard equipment includes the likes of a Burmester surround sound system; Air Body Control air suspension; panoramic electric sunroof; 12.3-inch infotainment display; 12.3-inch cockpit display; and 20-inch twin-spoke alloy wheels. Prices start from £58,880.

Return to form Welcome everyone to the most potent and most aggressive road going Octavia Skoda has ever built. It’s called the VRS 245 and it’s the VRS that the Octavia should’ve always been from the start. With a sportier look, a hiked power figure of 242hp and the addition of a motorsport-derived electronic limited slip differential situated between the front wheels, this Octavia VRS is the fastest Octavia yet. Powered from a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine, the 245 can achieve a 0-62mph time in 6.6 seconds. It is available in estate or hatch forms with either manual or DSG transmissions. Additional equipment over the standard VRS includes gloss black design features and 19-inch gloss black alloys. STONEACRE GROUP EXPANDS WITH THE HELP OF HONDA AND MITSUBISHI. toneacre Group has acquired the Gilder Group, adding the Mitsubishi and Honda franchises to the group. The acquisition took place on 1 July 2017 with the Sheffield Honda dealership opening at a brand-new location on Archer Road, Sheffield. The Rotherham and Chesterfield sites for Honda and Mitsubishi will remain at Doncaster Road and Lockoford Lane respectively. All staff across the three dealerships will be transferred as part of the acquisition and remain under the Honda and Mitsubishi banners. Originally founded in 1994, Stoneacre is a family-owned business that has evolved to become one of the UK’s fastest growing and most successful car dealers. Currently, the company owns more than 42 dealerships across the UK and offers nearly 200 new car models, as well as 4,000 used cars. This is the first time that the company has taken on the Honda and Mitsubishi franchises. Shaun Foweather, managing director of Stoneacre, commented: “We’re thoroughly excited and proud to be representing these two franchises. It is two more leading brands to add to our growing portfolio and we are looking forward to the challenge that it will bring. “We’re also delighted to retain the services of all staff members from the three Gilder

S

dealerships. Consistency is key to customer satisfaction and we’re committed to providing the best service possible. We hope our customers appreciate the investment and development that has been made. We look forward to welcoming them into our showrooms in the near future.”
