eason’s greetings and welcome to the December issue of Westside. Have you got your tree up yet? When it comes to decorations it’s easy to go over the top. To keep things on the right side of stylish, we spoke to interior designer Ben Huckerby who has dressed homes and businesses up and down the country including a very swanky London hotel. Food plays a huge part in any festive celebration. With that in mind we spoke to baker Jackie Starbuck to find the perfect Christmas cake recipe, and chocolatier Cocoa Spink who makes gorgeous – and tasty – gifts. Keeping things Christmas, we look at Santa’s list - and get his recommendations for songs, films, food and this year’s must-have toys. There’s a huge quiz too should you be stuck for things to do over the festive period. Luxury retailer Ponsford has embraced winter and collaborated with new online gallery, One Good Gift – we look at the stunning results. Elsewhere we have your usual mix of home and garden, fashion, beauty and motoring and will be back in the new year with our bumper Northern Lifestyle edition.

Best bar none WANT TO ACHIEVE THE GOLD STANDARD WITH YOUR CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS? ASK THE EXPERTS. et’s be honest, it’s been a pretty terrible year so wouldn’t it be great if we could lift spirits and finish 2020 on a high? Christmas, typically a time filled with comfort and joy, will be a little different but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be getting into the festive mood. In fact, we should be embracing it even more. Far beyond resurrecting the same artificial ‘Nordic pine’ tree each year, Christmas decorations can extend to all rooms of the house and include lights, garlands, festive foliage and much more. You can dress doorways, stairways and driveways and even let your children style their own rooms. The possibilities are endless. In short, Christmas decorations are a good way to start the season and, done right, can set the mood for the

many weeks ahead. But where to start? Interior design specialists Ben Huckerby Design started dressing everything from homes to hotels years ago and more recently have been repeatedly approached to style them for the festive season. With their expert eye they can choose decorations that complement your home perfectly and add a touch of class to your Christmas. As you can imagine, Ben and his team are in full flow at the moment, dressing homes and properties up and down the country. “Our first trees are booked for install the second week in November and we are usually fully installed by the end of the first week of December,” said Ben. “Ordinarily, we supply the items and dress the areas, usually in one
day, however, we draw the line at taking them down, this is usually left to the clients, who can store them for the following year!” And Ben isn’t afraid to go the extra mile for his clients. “Last year, a client’s build team overran so late that I installed the decorations on Christmas Eve to ensure they had a beautiful Christmas Day. With that in mind, my tree at home has to be one of the first to go up, as once I’ve done four or five installations, the motivation to do my own would be weak.” Pictured here is a project Ben Huckerby Design undertook at The Lanesborough Hotel on London’s Hyde Park Corner last year and showcased some of Ben’s favourite design elements. “I feel the most elegant trees and

CHRISTMAS
decorations are always the very muted tones with subtle accents of colour and I like to mix textures in the form of artificial foliage and feathers,” he said. “I always lean towards a warm white bulb both inside and outside, as I really feel this gives a much softer light and I always use a combination of gold, silver and clear baubles as I feel this achieves the best effects.” Ben is expecting to see decorations appear in homes much sooner this year, because of the current situation, but may have to go against his own advice and put his own decorations on hold as he’s hoping to move house at the start of this month. invest in something made with love and amazing craftsmanship. “It’s been really inspiring to discover artists and makers on my doorstep whose work is deserving of a bigger, international audience; work that captures the north of England’s raw energy and speaks of the traditions of the place in which it was created,” says Jamie. “People ask why I have chosen to focus on the north of England, but there is a distinctly unique creative voice here; one that transcends regional accents and is deep-rooted in radical thinking, technological innovation and progressive design.” A former editor-in-chief of Harper’s BAZAAR (Australia), Jamie has had a 25-year career writing for titles such as Vogue, i-D and The Sunday Times, working closely with the world’s biggest luxury brands and designers – experience he has drawn on for One Good Gift. He has teamed up with fellow northerner Emma LarssonRevitt, a respected creative director who is currently head of visual merchandising and creative projects at Anya Hindmarch, and digital marketing specialists Dawson & Davies, a boutique agency that specialises in supporting independent challenger brands. There are currently 16 artists and designers on board, all chosen because they are passionate, committed to their craft and obsessed with delivering the best quality possible. Everything at One Good Gift is unique, whether it’s a oneoff piece or a limited-edition run of no more than ten – “We understand that you don’t want the same as everybody else,” adds Jamie – and it’s sustainable too. “We limit our impact on the environment by working with local artists and makers who have sustainable business practices and use sustainable materials wherever possible.” From Sheffield you’ll find printmakers, ceramicists, fashion designers, florists, painters and metalsmiths. You can choose from linoprints, glass, jewellery, furniture, flowers and gift cards are available too. Michael Carter, for example, is a mixed media artist and creates ‘mythical landscapes’ and portraits of ‘unknown women’ using timehonoured techniques and a Modernist sense of colour. For One Good Gift, he has created a new body of work featuring intense block colours with abstract motifs. Each artwork unique, and is signed and dated on the reverse. If you like Modernist architecture you’ll love ceramicist Andrew Walker’s creations, which are like a little bit of Park Hill condensed into a vase or a lamp. “I love the free-flowing nature
of clay and yet I’m drawn into making very sculptural and industrial forms out of it,” says the Sheffieldbased artist. “I’m very much inspired by architecture and the architectural details that surround our lives every day. My work reflects those details we might take for granted.” House of SheldonHall – Steven Sheldon and Emma Hall – are longtime best friends and University of Huddersfield graduates. The Sheffield-based duo founded their luxury fashion brand in 2014 with a focus on innovative pattern-cutting techniques, an experimental approach to textiles and an aesthetic best described as high-octane glamour infused with British eccentricity. House of SheldonHall recently celebrated its London Fashion Week debut as part of ON|OFF’s Autumn/Winter 2020 collective, gaining press acclaim from British Vogue, Italian Vogue and

Food No Christmas is complete without food - and the more of it the better. 1 Turkey The much-maligned bird is the cornerstone of Christmas dinner. Give the goose a miss and go with tradition.
Mince pies Shop-bought or homemade, the humble mince captures the essence of Christmas in a few tasty mouthfuls. 2
3 Christmas pudding It may not be for everyone but with lashings of brandy sauce, it’s the perfect way to finish your Christmas meal. 4 Pigs in blankets When did these become such an integral part of Christmas dinner. Sausages wrapped in bacon are 5 the perfect partner to turkey.
Drinks Chances are your alcohol intake will increase over the festive period - here are some beverages for all occasions. 1 Mulled wine Served warm, this spiced wine is the perfect winter warmer and just screams Christmas. 2 Eggnog Usually considered an American tradition, eggnog actually originated in this country. Made with eggs, milk, cream and sugar, it’s a sweet treat. 3 Champagne Wake up to a glass of fizz on 25 December. Is there a better way to celebrate?
Brussel sprouts No dinner is complete without them. Instead of 6 boiling, try frying them with chestnuts and bacon.
4 Snowball They usually only surface at Christmastime and are something of an acquired taste.
Parnsips Roast them with a few carrots and a splash of honey to add a touch of sweetness to your dinner.
5 Port The perfect partner to your festive cheeseboard.
Cheese One to enjoy over the days following Christmas, usually with some good chutney and a glass of port. 7
Gingerbread The tradition of making gingerbread houses started in Germany but the spice-laden biscuits are the perfect accompaniment to any festive feast. 8
9 Chocolate Roses/Quality Street/Miniature Heroes/Terry’s Chocolate Orange… delete as applicable. Anything will do. 10 Yorkshire pudding Perhaps the most controversial addition to any Christmas dinner. Does it belong? It comes down to personal preference.

6 Bailey’s What is it about creamy drinks that seem so appropriate at Christmas? 7 Whisky Great straight up (or on the rocks) but even better in a hot toddy after a bracing winter walk. 8 Sherry The sweetness of the many different sherries is a good match for rich festive food. 9 Hot chocolate The whole family can wrap their hands around a steaming mug, preferably with marshmallows and whipped cream. 10 Martini Raise a glass to the recently departed Sean Connery. Make sure it’s shaken, not stirred of course.

CHRISTMAS FOOD
Make it nice ‘n’ easy THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS CAKE IS ALL ABOUT SIMPLICITY, SAYS EXPERT BAKER JACKIE STARBUCK. n English tradition, Christmas cake is often the centrepiece to many people’s festive celebrations and is something that can be savoured long after the presents have been put away and the tree packed back into its box. The fruit cake can be made well in advance of Christmas and traditionally consists of mixed dried fruits, is soaked in rum – although many now choose to ‘feed’ their cake with brandy – and can be decorated in myriad ways. One person who knows a thing or two about Christmas cakes - and sweet treats in general - is the proprietor of Bakewell patisserie Thirza & Walter, Jackie Starbuck. Jackie opened the Bridge Street store, which is named after her grandparents, and sells everything from delicious desserts to handmade chocolates. “My grandmother loved baking and I think that’s rubbed off on me,” said Jackie. “I love baking and making chocolate. The shop has been styled upon a French patisserie and I sell meringue, frangipane, truffles, cheesecakes, tarts, bavoise, tiramisui, delice, mousse, gateau, fruit tarts, trifles… there are over 125 varieties and new creations, it’s endless.” Thirza & Walter is well stocked for Christmas and due to the limitation during November, Jackie is offering a postal service so you don’t miss out on her delectable chocolates and gifts. Her festive treats include traditional Christmas puddings with port and brandy, speciality mince pies with a cream topping and chocolate curls, and a 1970s retro chocolate yule log with chocolate ganache. For us at Westside though, it’s all about the

cake and the Thirza & Walter Traditional Christmas Cake looks like a real showstopper. Jackie has been a real sweetheart and decided to share her time-honoured recipe with us so if you fancy having a go at home, these easy-to-follow instructions should set you on your way. “The perfect Christmas cake is quite simple really,” she said. “Use the freshest of high quality ingredients, cook it slowly and then feed it with plenty of brandy!” Once you’ve baked and decorated your cake the only thing left to do is to cut yourself a slice, stick some Bing Crosby on and tuck in. There are many great accompaniments to a rich fruit cake but for Jackie there’s one that really stands out: “For me, it has to be cheese,” she said. “Choose a sharp cheese [Westside recommends a good Wensleydale] and it’ll cut through the boozy richness of the cake. Dried fruits and nuts are a natural pairing.” Whatever your choice, enjoy! Thirza & Walter is at Bridge Street, Bakewell, DE45 1DS. CHRISTMAS FOOD
Artisan gifts COCOA SPINK’S CHOCOLATE TREATS ARE PERFECT FOR CHRISTMAS. n recent years, there has been a notable rise in artisan brands, with more people valuing quality over quantity. The notion that more people are now leaning towards buying locally-produced, handmade confectionary in particular is something that Sue from Cocoa Spink recognises. Based in Sheffield, Sue is an artisan chocolate-maker who set up her business, Cocoa Spink, in 2017. Since then, Sue has created an impressive range of chocolates and treats, all of which are handmade in her kitchen. Her products can also be personalised if requested. Sue first got involved in chocolate-making in 2016 when she accompanied a friend on a chocolatemaking course. However, her passion for creativity started long before then. “Many years previous to this I worked in my family business, which was the butchers at Bents Green. Even then, I enjoyed trying to be creative in the shop.” Sue started Cocoa Spink whilst working part-time in a local nursery and helped her newly-established business grow by attending local markets such as Sharrow Vale, Nether Edge and other food festivals. “One of the first bars I

I also now have a website on my Cocoa Spink Instagram page which I’m starting to build.” Similarly to everyone else, Sue acknowledges that Christmas is going to be a bit different this year and hopes that a few of her chocolate treats will bring a little joy to people. “I’m currently busy making hot chocolate stirrers and chocolate lollipops – both of which are
perfect for table presents, stocking fillers and Christmas Eve boxes. Letterbox bars are also a great idea and price point (around £6 which includes p&p).” As for the future, Sue is feeling positive. “I’d like to think about setting up a chocolate-themed café one day… we’ll see!” Find out more at www.cocoaspink.com

Destination Derbyshire CHANGES ARE AFOOT AT THE RED LION AT PEAK EDGE HOTEL. RICHARD ABBEY WENT TO SEE WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT. he Red Lion at Peak Edge Hotel has changed a lot since my last visit a few years ago. The stone-built hostelry on the edge of Chesterfield has undergone something of a makeover over the last few months – and there’s still more to come. It still retains that wonderful countryside feel with plenty of cosy snugs, inviting dining areas and open fires for when the weather is a little too biting. But new for 2020 is a brand new extension and outdoor terrace.
T
Largely built during lockdown (the first one), the new dining area is flooded with light thanks to windows along two sides and a huge lantern roof light. It is complemented by a contemporary outside decked area complete with glass balustrades. Eventually this will link to a brand new entrance and car park to the pub, which in turn is attached to the Peak Edge Hotel, itself undergoing significant changes with the addition of an orangery. The interior to the extension is a delight. Stone floors and walls are paired with exposed wooden beams to add a real rustic feel which is softened by cushion-draped booth and banquette seating, tasteful dividers and lots of candlelight. Far-reaching views across the countryside are an added bonus. At the time of writing the pub is open for lunch 12-3pm and dinner 5-10pm (last table 8.30pm) served by a new kitchen team overseen by head chef Benjamin Hallam. and well matched by the meaty, earthy accompaniments; my terrine proved to be quite the surprise, presented as two breaded and fried fritters which were densely packed with deliciously tender meat. I stuck to the specials for mains too with fish of the day, which on this occasion was pan roasted cod, heritage potatoes and green beans in a lemon and caper butter. The fish, complete with crispy skin, was perfectly cooked and complemented by flavours that were subtle rather than overpowering. My wife chose the Walton Lodge 8oz brisket burger (£14), a mountainous creation, served with smoked cheese, crispy pancetta, relish and triple-cooked chips. It was a real treat, and tasted just as impressive as it looked. Leaving room for dessert (just), we indulged in servings of Walton Lodge honey and whisky parfait, with spiced poached pears and honeycomb, and a caramel panna cotta with espresso ice cream and a tuile basket (both £7.50).
and blackberries at this time of year. Beans, onions, turnips, radishes and several varieties of cabbage are being planted for next year. Elsewhere the Red Lion utilises Winster Foods in Chesterfield market, P Hassel and Son, The Bakewell Bakery and The Gentleman Fishmonger. We arrived on a grey, wet lunchtime during half-term week, finding a complete contrast in the new extended dining room which was warm, bright and welcoming. Suitably seated in our comfortable booth – which could have easily seated six – we perused the menu which struck a balance between fine dining and comfort food and featured dishes including soup of the day (celeriac and apple on this occasion), pie of the day (pork and leek), haddock and chips as well as sandwiches, panini and salads. There’s a good children’s menu too – my
My two children enjoyed chocolate brownies (£3) served with vanilla ice cream. All were excellent and a fitting way to finish our meal. The improvements at the Red Lion have enhanced an already fine venue and with more to come in the new year, it should become a real destination in 2021. two were more than happy with their mini burger and hand-cut chips (£6.50). After ordering drinks – a pint of Jaipur (£5) for me, house merlot (£7.50) for my wife – we tucked into our starters. My wife opted for pan seared scallops with pulled pork shoulder and textures of celeriac (£11) whilst I turned to the specials board, selecting ham hock terrine with burnt apple purée (£7). The plump scallops were cooked just right

No place like home ESCAPE THE COLD AND FIND A WARM WELCOME AT THE HYDE PARK INN, WRITES OLIVIA WARSOP. e are now legitimately into the Autumn season (and quickly approaching winter). It is undeniable. The clocks have changed, the mornings are frosty and Christmas is now being shouted about rather than whispered about. If you are someone like me who enjoys the long, cold months between September and February then you know that there are just certain Autumn activities that you look forward to year after year. And yes I still think that applies to 2020. For me, one of these activities is going to a homely pub with an inviting atmosphere and having some amazing, cosy food. Nothing is better than it being minus ten degrees outside and getting that warm feeling when you walk into a toasty pub and the food smells like heaven and there’s also wine. I live for that feeling every year. So going to the Hyde Park Inn for some fantastic food? Yep I am all about that!

Built in the late 19th century, the Hyde Park Inn is located on the southern edge of Dronfield and is run by Tom and Vee. It’s a welcoming venue for all ages (including four-legged animals) and, as well as extensive food menu, has a well-stocked central bar with wines, spirits and local ales on tap. For starters we went with a classic dish of delicious pan fried mushrooms swimming in a buttery garlic sauce and served with a fresh, oven warmed bread roll (£5.25), necessary to mop up all the sauce which was so good that I was not willing to leave even a single drop on the plate. We also had a not-so-classic

(but definitely should be) dish of filled potato shells crisped to perfection in the oven and topped with melted cheese and sizzling bacon (£4.95). For mains a flavourful sweet potato and chickpea curry with a rich and creamy coconut sauce and cooked spinach was every bit warming. There are a few options for sides with this dish – you can have chips, rice or half-rice and half-chips. Obviously I went with the only sensible choice of half and half! It also comes with a huge poppadum as an extra side (£6.95). As recommended by the staff we also had the salmon en croûte from the ‘Fish Friday’ menu – tender baked salmon and grilled asparagus on puff pastry served coated in a mouth-watering parsley, lemon and spring onion sauce and served with a side of fluffy mashed potatoes and garden peas (£8.95). The decision to order dessert was not one lightly taken as the portion sizes here are no joke, but in the end we couldn’t resist and tucked into a sundae of layered chocolate chip cookies and vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate sauce and a Cadbury flake (£4.25). Another spot-on staff recommendation of the raspberry and gin cheesecake which is comprised of a gluten-free biscuit base with a rich baked cheesecake topped with raspberries and a gin glaze and served with a generous

helping of ice cream (£4.25). And if I had to change into my pyjamas as soon as I got home then that’s between me and next week’s diet. As well as their regular menu the Hyde Park Inn also hosts several speciality evenings during the week. There is ‘Meaty Monday Steak Night’, ‘Tapas Tuesday’ where it’s 2 for 1 off the tapas menu and ‘Fish Friday’ where they serve a variety of seafood dishes. Across all their menus there are over 30 vegan/vegetarian and gluten free options and additionally their Specials Board changes frequently. They also have a menu for ‘Smaller Appetites’, one for lunch time offers and even a ‘From the Grill’ selection including steak, lamb and chicken chorizo skewers. So whether you’re a regular or trying it for the first time it’s likely you will be spoilt for choice! The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and happy to chat about recommendations and their personal favourite dishes. Their advice about portion sizes also turned out to be invaluable so I would definitely recommend asking their opinions. In terms of drinks, draught lagers and ales start from around £3 a pint and they have a great selection to choose from! Wine starts from £3.50 for a small glass and goes up to £5 for 250ml. If you’re
in need of a little mid-week pick me up they also serve 2 for £8 cocktails on Thursdays! When it was time to leave I practically had to drag myself away from the cosy atmosphere and lovely staff. I was already envisioning my next meal there when the cold air hit me as I walked through the door and I almost ran back inside! I think we are all looking forward to the festive season and if you want a cosy night out then the Hyde Park Inn is definitely worth a trip, whether it’s for
classic pub dishes or if you’re in the mood to try something different. Hyde Park Inn 2 Hilltop Road, Dronfield S18 1UH Tel: 01246 290120 www.thehydeparkinn.uk

Best of British MARTIN EDWARDS REVISITS A GREAT NATIONAL TRADITION. hink of Britain. Good. Now name the first three thoughts that immediately come to mind. Chances are you have, in no particular order, come up with HM the Queen, Winston Churchill and tea. We’ll leave aside those of a more negative frame of mind who might well add to the list serially failing national football teams, the wearing of socks with sandals and a tendency to be too polite to complain in restaurants… until a letter to the manager arrives a couple of days later. But the influence of tea transcends them all. It has fuelled armies and floated navies. It is seen by the British as a universal remedy for every ailment including shock, anxiety and fatigue to name but a few. And it is to be liberally dispensed before a single brick is laid on any construction site. Builders swear by it, literally. It has also left its mark elsewhere in the world, particularly the beautiful Cameron Highlands in Malaysia, a rolling mountainous region of tea plantations where the hotels have mock-Tudor beams on their frontage, and visitors can relax with their large Scotches and Drambuies over a game of billiards in the bar after dinner. But the highlight of the day at this little enclave of Britishness out east is when it’s time for afternoon tea to be served. This ritual, which dates back to Victorian times, is still going strong in this unlikeliest of settings. Of course, you don’t need to fly to Kuala Lumpur then journey several days by road in order to enjoy afternoon tea. Far easier to find it much nearer home, in fact within a stone’s throw of Chatsworth at East Lodge. The long-established country house

hotel occupies a lovely rural setting just outside the village of Rowsley. This cosy establishment is run by two generations of the Hardman family, which makes for a friendly welcome – indeed, the family’s two cats Tom and Jerry were the first to greet us on arrival. East Lodge has been earning itself something of a reputation for its
afternoon tea (from £22.50 per person) recently. It’s the same basic but timehonoured combination of small delicate sandwiches, cakes and scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream. But there the resemblance ends. To call the creation of pastry chef Josh Needham a scone is rather like describing a Ferrari Enzo as a means of

“To call the creation of pastry chef Josh Needham a scone is rather like describing a Ferrari Enzo as a means of transport.” transport. My companion on the afternoon in question pronounced them “unbelievably light and delicate. Without doubt the best I’ve ever had”. I wouldn’t disagree, even if she, being from Lancashire, mispronounced it as ‘sconn’. At the risk of overstating the case, she was right. It would have Paul Hollywood lost for words.
You’ll have guessed what came next – a message went into the kitchen asking for the chef ’s recipe. But there was no special treatment to be had for the media. “Sorry,” came the reply back “but I don’t give the recipe out to anyone as it’s my secret.” It turns out even staff who have worked at East Lodge for donkeys’ years are no wiser. If anyone does work it out, please let me know and I’ll see you on Great British Bake-off. And no creeping around in the kitchen late at night to try and find it – we don’t want to end up with a Sconegate scandal. By comparison, the rest of the fare was merely excellent. Cakes carefully crafted by Josh comprised cinnamon Breton shortbread with apple mousse, soft caramel centre, caramel buttercream and a cinnamon meringue, milk chocolate and orange tarte with a passionfruit ganache, coated in dark chocolate,
finished with candied orange and a chocolate tulle, and a blackberry delice made with almond sponge, blackberry mousse, blackberry mirror glaze and finished with fresh blackberries, crisp meringue and blackberry tulle. Ian Hardman explains that the kitchen tries to use seasonal themes in the cakes, hence the blackberries. “Afternoon tea has become so popular that we now do a takeaway and delivery service. We even had a request from some customers for six of them to take away for a wedding reception.” Sandwiches were smoked salmon, egg mayonnaise, cheese and pickle and the traditional cucumber. With tea of course – Earl Grey for the lady, English breakfast for me. It’s a great way to spend a relaxed hour or two in the hotel’s conservatory. And there’s enough to leave you plenty to take home. Makes you proud to be British. East Lodge Rowsley, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 2EF Tel: 01629 736910 www.eastlodge.com

Our philosophy is “quality and taste delivered with excellence.” Our speciality dough is made daily and is hand stretched and left to mature for at least 72 hours, not only to ensure the best flavour but to also improve digestion. It is created using flour derived only from genuine Italian wheats. Our sauce is also made fresh daily using the finest San Marzano tomatoes, known for their ‘meatier’ flesh, their historical roots can be traced right back to 1770, when it is believed the first seeds were grown in volcanic soil under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Much less acidic than most other varieties, they give both a sweet and sour taste on the palate. A sublime mozzarella made from cows’ milk, Fior di latte has superb elasticity giving a smooth yet tangy flavour, which in
our opinion is the perfect choice on which to base any ingredients. Zizzona offers an authentic, home-cooked Italian experience. Come on in and watch Chef Marco prepare your fresh pizza, then savour the smell as it rises and sizzles in our authentic wood-fired oven. Imported from Italy and installed by master craftsmen, our traditional mosaic tiled oven is what gives our pizzas that extra special Zizzona zing.

Christmas celebration ACTING DEAN GEOFFREY HARBORD SPEAKS TO WESTSIDE ABOUT HIS SUITABILITY FOR THE ROLE, THE CURRENT PANDEMIC AND HIS HOPES FOR 2021. n this constantly changing world, Sheffield Cathedral has had to change and adapt like the best of us. At the time of writing it is currently closed to public worship but is open for private prayer. Aiming to reopen its doors on 3 December, restrictions permitting, it will be launching its Christmas Tree Festival, which is sponsored by etiCloud and will run throughout the month. Local businesses, schools and charities have been invited to sponsor Christmas trees which will be displayed around the stunning interior of the building and visitors can visit free of charge. Leading the Christmas celebrations will be recently appointed Acting Dean Geoffrey Harbord. He joins at the most difficult of times but was happy to speak to us about his suitability for the role, the current pandemic and his hopes for 2021. “Sheffield Cathedral has been a site of Christian worship for around a thousand years,” he said. “It is no stranger to dark days – in the 13th century it was burned down by rebels, it has witnessed the destruction wrought by civil war and the suffering caused by pestilence and plague and, 80 years ago this month, bombs falling all around it. “Today, as everywhere else, it is set in the midst of the COVID pandemic, with most of its services having to be broadcast online and the building itself only open for restricted hours. “It is quite a challenge to work out how a cathedral can minister in these circumstances and I have been asked to help it do this over the next few months as its acting dean until a permanent one

Trio of tenants
CODA and Koko combine
Sustainable property developer Citu has signed three new tenants for its Little Kelham development in Sheffield’s Kelham Island district, with three other units under offer and only one unit now remaining in the sought-after former mill building. Sheffield-based IT and digital transformation specialists Simoda has taken the first floor 2,010 sq. ft on a five-year lease. Simoda’s Managing Director Daniel Bumby said: “The location was key as we want to be able to attract people to come and work here as we expand. We also loved the building’s heritage and the industrial features of the offices that have been retained - it is something really special.” His new Eagle Works’ neighbour is Steve Miccoli who is putting the finishing touches on his 70-cover restaurant and cocktail bar Isabellas, in the adjacent 1,555 sq. ft two storey Gatehouse building that originally formed the entrance to the steelworks. He said: “This is such a buzzing, up and coming part of Sheffield and we wanted to be part of it. It has a great vibe and there’s a real mix of people, from young professionals and students to families with young children moving into the area. It’s a very exciting time for us.” The third of the new tenants is The Floristry School, which is occupying 1,157 sq. ft on the ground floor of Eagle Works. The Floristry School offers accredited courses from The Sheffield College, as well as its own courses, to train professional florists. They all join existing tenants Uber Agency, Pendo and Stew and Oyster, with another 3 tenants to be announced soon. The last remaining unit, The Engine Room, offers 1,410 sq. ft of space on the first floor of Eagle Works.
Award-winning and nationally acclaimed Sheffield architectural design company CODA Bespoke has teamed up with a rising property developer to create a luxury new home in one of the city’s most popular suburbs. The £500,000 plus property in Fox Lane at Bradway is a stone fronted, four bedroom executive home with a total 1,850 sq ft of space, including open plan kitchen, large formal lounge and utilities. The CODA Bespoke team created the designs for start up developer Ranveer Khela, of Koko Projects in Sheffield. And they liaised with another city company, Dibujo Design Interiors, on the creation of the luxurious feel and look of the property. “We were delighted to be working with Ranveer, a talented young property developer who immediately understood and appreciated our approach to design unique and distinctive homes,” said CODA Bespoke director Abel Hinchliffe. “We are now actively looking for further potential development sites with Koko Projects.” CODA Bespoke, part of the Sheffield-based CODA Studios family, specialises in luxurious extensions, renovations and new homes. One of its most acclaimed recent projects, built on the site of a 200-year-old corn mill in the north Sheffield community of Oughtibridge, featured on Channel 4 hit Grand Designs and was subsequently named Residential Development of the Year at the prestigious Northern Design Awards 2018.
Golf Day raises £5,000 The annual St Luke’s Hospice Golf Day has raised more than £5,000 after going ahead post lockdown. The golf day, which is organised by the Rotary Club of Sheffield and sponsored by Sheffield data protection specialists Bruce and Butler, was held at Abbeydale Golf Club. And with 35 teams taking part in the special sporting challenge, the day raised a final total of more than £5,000. St Luke’s Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak said: “Our Golf Day is always extremely popular and this year’s event was no exception. Even though the whole day was pushed back from June to October because of lockdown restrictions, we were delighted that so many teams still managed to find the time to join us and that they raised such a fantastic amount. “Now we are looking forward to our 2021 event.” 90 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Carol gains specialist accreditation Sheffield and Chesterfield based solicitors, Graysons, is pleased to announce that partner and head of clinical negligence, Carol Simpson, has been accredited as a specialist clinical negligence solicitor by AvMA (Action Against Medical Accidents). Set up over 35 years ago, AvMA is the only “UK patients’ charity specialising in patient safety”. It has established a panel (approved list) of solicitors, which Carol has now joined, who have been assessed and accredited as specialists in the complex area of medical negligence law. Experts in medical negligence need knowledge of medicine as well as law and Carol has a perfect mix of both. She worked for the NHS for 19 years as a nurse and midwife, where she gained experience that is invaluable to her work in medical negligence. Indeed, it was her former profession that led to her knowing instinctively that she wanted to act for vulnerable individuals and families who had suffered a serious injury as a result of medical negligence. Carol now has 16 years’ experience acting for claimants on a variety of high-value cases. Her work includes acting for clients relating to amputations, spinal injuries, orthopaedic, paediatric and birth injury claims. She works extremely hard to help achieve a successful outcome for her clients, is passionate about what she does and has an empathetic and common-sense approach that her clients welcome. She is particularly accomplished at explaining medical and legal jargon to her clients, helping them to have a clear understanding of their claim and ensuring their involvement throughout the case. You can contact Carol at Graysons on 0114 272 9184 or medneg@graysons.co.uk
Gripple triple In the North East Yorkshire and Humber region 2020 MAKE UK Manufacturing Awards, Gripple won an award in each of the three categories entered. The company now goes forward to the national finals against other regional winners. The first award won by Gripple was Business Growth and Strategy. Secondly, Gripple won in the Developing Future Talent category, which recognises those companies who have had done the most to build skills, develop talent and promote diversity amongst their employees. Completing the trio was the Business Apprentice of the Year: Final Year winner, 21-year-old Estelle Smith lifting the regional award for making a significant contribution to support the company’s business activities and on track for a successful career. Gripple executive chairman and Gripple creator, Hugh Facey said: “Well done! I would like to congratulate and thank everyone across the business for this achievement. It’s further evidence of the resilience, hard work and dedication they have shown throughout, particularly during a difficult year.”
Striding out When digital agency Hydra Creative launched a year of support for St Luke’s Hospice at the start of 2020, they had no idea that their fundraising activities would be hit by the Coronavirus pandemic. The Chesterfield Road company, which was founded in Sheffield in 2009, had just celebrated its tenth anniversary when it chose St Luke’s as its charity partner. And only now are the team being able to get back in step with their fundraising plans with a series of money making projects for the St Luke’s Virtual Night Strider campaign. Night Strider is the popular St Luke’s October charity spectacular that sees supporters heading off into the night on either a 10k or walking half marathon challenge. 2020 would have marked Night Strider’s sixth anniversary but when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, a new plan had to be developed - and Night Strider has gone virtual! The Night Strider virtual challenge - sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - has participants register free of charge to do their own fundraising event any time between between now and Saturday October 31. For Hydra that means a selection of challenges built around a healthy walking theme. There have already been individual 10k and 15k walks and other events to come over the next few days include a 5k double baby carry around Rother Valley Country Park, a walk with three pugs and a 600 floor stairclimber challenge that will be the equivalent of climbing the Empire State Building five times without stopping!
Grant aid lifeline City homeless charity Emmaus Sheffield has been awarded a £30,000 grant by the Julia and Hans Rausing Charity Survival Fund. The fund was established by the couple in July to help charities in need due to the Covid-19 pandemic and has provided £18 million to support core costs for charities over the second half of the year. And one of the organisations which placed a successful application was Emmaus Sheffield, the drug and alcohol free project that provides a home, support and work for formerly homeless people in Sheffield. Through its Social Enterprise programme it aims to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions - to eventually become self-supporting once more. One of its main income streams is its extremely popular second hand superstore - based at the charity’s headquarters in Cadman Street, closer to Victoria Quays - but during lockdown the operation was forced to close, though it is now open again and following all COVID-19 rules on safe shopping. “To have been awarded a £30,000 by the Julia and Hans Rausing Charity Survival Fund means so much to us,” said Emmaus Sheffield Deputy manager Charley Fedorenko. “The first half of 2020 proved a challenging time for both the charity and our companions but this level of support helps us to move forward with greater confidence and optimism.” www.sheffieldvibe.com 91

Back to the future MARTIN LOXLEY ON HIS DECISION TO JOIN HALL BROWN FAMILY LAW. s I write, the UK is entering another period of lockdown. It is one which will doubtless add to the pressures felt by families and businesses across our region. The decision by Boris Johnson to impose similar restrictions back in March created the kind of challenge which many people had not previously experienced. Its impacts have been considerable, underlining the need for specialist guidance to help individuals navigate their way through acute economic and relationship difficulties. That’s one reason why I’m relishing a new challenge of my own. After 40 years as a family lawyer three decades of which were spent as the head of the Family department at Irwin Mitchell - I have decided to join another firm, one with a truly exciting future. Hall Brown Family Law is a relative youngster compared to some of its peers in the legal industry but it has made

great strides since first opening its doors four years ago. I believe that’s because its founders, Sam Hall and James Brown, were determined to provide a level of service associated with the most renowned London firms but without the level of fees which lawyers in the capital might charge clients. Hall Brown has assembled a hugely impressive team of lawyers and administrative staff but you don’t have to take my word for it. In October, it retained its status as one of the country’s leading family law firms in two of the industry’s most prestigious rankings, Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners. Among those of its lawyers singled out for praise was Alison Fernandes, who leads Hall Brown’s office at The Balance development in Sheffield city centre. She was part of my reason for joining Hall Brown. Not only is she generally and genuinely acknowledged as one of Yorkshire’s best family lawyers, her
capabilities are on a par with the best in the country. I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside Alison for 15 years in total at Irwin Mitchell - a firm with its beginnings in Sheffield, yet which has now established a national presence. That was a process in which I’m delighted to say I played my small part. Like myself and Sam Hall (who was himself born and raised in Sheffield), Alison understands the needs of individuals in our area. Together, we have the kind of experience and knowledge which we believe can help clients through some very difficult circumstances as well as cementing Hall Brown’s reputation as a family law firm unlike any other. It has built a solid reputation resolving a wide range of family law disputes, including complex, high-value financial issues stretching across different jurisdictions and delicate matters involving children’s welfare. Another reason for wanting to join Hall Brown is that it represents an enormous breadth of clients: the national and international business community, entrepreneurs, celebrities, elite sportsmen and women, members of the judiciary and academics. The firm doesn’t just help people with wealth but those who have really difficult problems and need practical, sensibly priced advice. They are precisely the same sort of people from all over the country for whom I have enjoyed acting over the last four decades. And I do truly enjoy the work that I do. I am very much a Sheffield lad. I grew up on the Norfolk Park Estate and went to High Storrs School. Although, and in spite of (or perhaps because of) my best efforts, I was never going to become a

rock singer or play centre-forward for my beloved Sheffield Wednesday. I did, however, find myself working in a profession which presents the chance to interact with people from a range of backgrounds and the satisfaction in helping them overcome their problems. It requires analysis, creativity and teamwork as well as the need to establish trust with clients and colleagues alike. That, again, is why I am happy to have moved to Hall Brown. There is a desire to give the men and women who call on them for assistance an optimal level of support as well as do what it can to develop family lawyers who feel exactly the same kind of commitment. I am not alone. The expansion of the firm’s staff in recent years has been achieved by attracting others who echo that personality. The approach has resonated too with clients. Since Hall Brown opened its Sheffield office in April, there has been a rush of work.
Both Alison and I are hugely confident about our ability to offer people something unique. For clients, Hall Brown is able to put at their disposal immensely skilled and experienced lawyers who are considered among the very best in their specialism. For fellow lawyers in Yorkshire and beyond - now and in the future - this growing firm promises a career with a real purpose. Hall Brown, you see, is a firm with a keen grasp of the communities which it serves. Only last year, Sam and James were Highly Commended in the Law Society’s own Excellence Awards for their efforts in helping to save a court system designed to prevent the children of parents addicted to drugs or alcohol from being taken into care. Twelve months on, they were honoured in a similar fashion for their efforts in progressing the business with, as judges noted, a “serious commitment
to the wellbeing of their staff ”. I consider myself fortunate to be working with them and to be allowed to make my own contribution to supporting our clients. At a time when lockdown may once more ask searching questions for families in our region, I know that myself and my colleagues at Hall Brown will be doing our best to help. Unearthed from the archives They’ve been labelled as some of the most iconic photos of the city’s post-punk years and they’ve now been re-born in a new book that celebrates one of Sheffield’s most legendary clubs. Many of Pete Hill’s photos from the early days of Sheffield’s Limit club had never been developed until lockdown this year – 42 years after they were originally shot. His stunning photos appear in the new ‘Take It To The Limit’ title and provide a rare glimpse of artists – both local, national and international – playing some of their earliest shows. Pete Hill describes his time spent at the Limit – which opened in March 1978 – as a labour of love and appreciates the interest in his work after all this time. He said: “In a word it was fun. I used to probably go down a couple of times a week. Music and photography were my two passions, and still are. I started out as a professional not long after in 1980, I had an old Little Mesters workshop on Backfields, right in the centre of town. I used to work a lot with lots of the local bands at the time.” ‘Take It To The Limit’ is on sale now, priced £13.95, from:www.dirtystopouts.com 94 www.sheffieldvibe.com

For your peace of mind GRAYSONS ARE BEST PLACED TO ADVISE ELDERLY CLIENTS THROUGH COVID 19, SAYS LAURA COWAN, SENIOR PRIVATE CLIENT ADVISOR AND SFE MEMBER. he coronavirus crisis has led to a difficult time for everyone, none more so than the elderly and vulnerable. Even though we are now not in a full lockdown, these people still find themselves subject to many of the same severe challenges that came with it. The virus has led to many elderly and vulnerable people looking for specific and empathetic legal advice to help them plan for the future and that of their families, and Graysons is pleased to be able to provide this. Graysons has offered specialist advice to elderly and vulnerable clients for many years, with a team of experts who can help navigate the complexities of matters such as powers of attorney, wills, estate planning and care planning. The government has deemed that this assistance is so important, it has designated private client lawyers as key workers and we are able to continue to provide a full service to such clients. We know that these clients and their families need the peace of mind that their matter is handled by advisors who are not only qualified but have empathy and an understanding of their specific mental and physical needs. Members of the group, Solicitors for the Elderly (SFE), whose primary concern is the safeguarding of older and vulnerable clients, offer exactly that. Graysons’ senior private client advisor, Laura Cowan, is one of only four members of SFE in Sheffield. She is specifically trained in dealing with, and has extra understanding of, issues that relate to the
T
elderly, such as how best to look after their money. Her empathetic approach means that she takes time when dealing with elderly clients, making sure they are not rushed and that her advice is clearly understood. Whilst she can deal with matters by telephone or video link – often with the help of staff in care homes – she also understands that some elderly clients are uncomfortable with the technology and prefer the face to face meeting. She can see clients in Graysons’ COVIDcompliant offices and offers home, hospital and care home (where allowed) visits, with no extra charge. Indeed, Laura was able to see clients on their own front doorstep and in their gardens during lockdown and arranged for witnesses that were either in her own social bubble or another member of staff that could socially distance when witnesses were required. As a member of SFE, Laura is part of a close-knit group who share ideas and experience and knowledge. This has been particularly useful during the COVID pandemic and has helped to ensure that what she does, and how she does it, is adapted to make sure that everyone is safe and comfortable. Laura, like several of Graysons staff, is also a Dementia Friend (people who learn about dementia so they can help others in the community). She is also a Dementia Friends Champion, actively encouraging others to make a positive difference to people living with dementia in their community. This and her SFE
membership puts Laura in the ideal position to offer a full service to elderly and vulnerable clients, including drafting wills and powers of attorney, carrying out Court of Protection work, such as applying for someone to become a deputy for a person who has lost mental capacity and does not have a power of attorney, and guiding those deputies or already appointed attorneys in their duties. Laura says: “The coronavirus crisis has resulted in a difficult time for many people, especially those who are isolated. Working in an area of law where our priority is to protect our clients, many of whom are elderly vulnerable, has led to real challenges, particularly during full lockdown. The co-operation shown by the sector and support of SFE has allowed us to navigate these difficult and trying times and continue to provide our clients with the service on which we pride ourselves.” Contact Laura Cowan at: Email: laura.cowan@graysons.co.uk Tel: 0114 205 0366 Facebook: Graysonslaw Twitter: @Graysonslaw www.graysons.co.uk

MOTORING
GET HOT UNDER THE COLLAR WITH THIS MONTH’S MOTORING OFFERINGS. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.
Hotter hatch
Right price The SUV offerings from Peugeot have always been a solid alternative to the usually crop you get from the Germans. With their great styling and plethora of technology on offer they provide a car that’s hard to ignore in this sector of the market. Peugeot has now announced the pricing and specification of their new 3008 and 5008 ranges. With a choice of efficient petrol and diesel powertrains including a choice of two plug-in hybrids on the 3008 model producing figures of 235mpg WLTP, prices will range from £27,160-£47,210 for the 3008 and £29,585£40,905 for the 5008. A six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic gearbox are offered in both cars, however the two advanced plug-in hybrid powertrains are only available in the 3008.
For the hot-hatch lovers out there, Hyundai has developed a new hatch from the skunkworks of its N-division. Say hello to the i20 N. The i30 N was a nutter of a car, if it was human is would almost certainly have an ASBO. Think of the i20 N as the annoying little brother following in its big brother’s footsteps. Not much word on the powertrain or performance details, however we do know that the styling has been inspired by the i20 WRC rally car, meaning it’s going to look like a hot-hatch should, and sounds just as you would expect. Like the i30 N, expect a manual to be offered for the real driving enthusiasts to which this car is catered towards.
Electric first
Hot Spur If you’re in the market for a car that can transport you, your partner and two kids in exquisite luxury, comfort, and speed then the Bentley Flying Spur will arguably be at the top of your shopping list. The Flying Spur is Bentley’s finest take on producing one of the best saloon cars ever made. Now though, like the Continental GT, the Flying Spur can now be powered by a 542hp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine as an option to the 6.0-litre W12 which is synonymous with Bentley cars. The V8 is targeted to a more driver-focussed demographic as the V8 is 100kg lighter than the W12 iterant making for a more agile and responsive and enthralling drive. Deliveries due at the end of 2020. 104 www.sheffieldvibe.com
For years the Skoda Octavia VRS has been the staple for allround everyday performance motoring, ranging from the hardworking blue-collar family man’s workhorse to the traffic cop’s undercover stealth machine. Never has there been an electric version, up until now – under the hood lies a 148hp 1.4 TSI petrol engine, which combined with an 85kW electric motor boosts power to 242hp and 400Nm of torque. From 50-70mph this is 2.2 seconds quicker than the ordinary petrol variant. A combined economy figure of 176.6mpg is quoted as is a CO2 figure of 26g/km. This can drive up to 39 miles on electric-only propulsion. Hatch and estate variants are offered, front-wheel drive only and powered through a six-speed DSG gearbox. Prices start from £35,020.
