Our process
Stage 1: Consultation
If you are updating an existing space, one of our designers will survey your property. If you already have plans of the new space, we would invite you to bring them into the showroom. We would talk through your vision and discuss everything, from appliances, worktops, colours, to styles of doors.
Stage 3: Order
We will conduct a final site survey to double check all measurements, and once you are completely happy with the design, the order will be placed.
Every great design starts with a vision. Let’s find yours.
Stage 2: Design
Next, we will start designing your dream kitchen, taking into account everything we have learnt about you, your vision, and your space. We’ll then invite you back into our showroom to talk through the design
Stage 4: Delivery
As soon as we know when your kitchen will be ready, we will get in touch to organise an installation date that works for you. We will ensure a smooth seamless delivery and install of your dream kitchen.

The Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards, sponsored by The Owlerton Experience, returned to the OEC for the fourth time - and what a night it was.
or many of our restaurants attending the 2024 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, sponsored by The Owlerton Experience, it was a night of multiples with many walking off with more than one award. Grabbing the headlines were the Peacock at Rowsley, who won Best Contemporary and the coveted Restaurant of the Year awards, and Nonnas, who as well as winning Best Italian were given a special achievement award for their longevity in the notoriously challenging hospitality business.
Longbow Venues, who own The Maynard in Grindleford, The Ashford Arms and The George in Hathersage won three awards for Readers’ Choice, Best Sunday Lunch and Young Chef of the Year. The Readers’ Choice Award is one of the most popular and is voted for by yourselves.

The kitchen served a wonderful fourcourse meal which consisted of a roasted spiced butternut squash and sweet potato

When it came to the 2024 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards competition was keen of course, and we were delighted at how many local restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the event. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region and beyond.
Each of our 26 winners received an engraved plaque, which were presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp and publishing director Amanda Roy.

So what of the alternatives?
We have spoken to a number of our local restaurants – all winners in our recent Westside Restaurant Awards (see page 28 for a full list of winners) – and asked for some inspiration when it comes to serving something up to follow the main event.
Adrian Gagea, who is executive chef at The Maynard, Grindleford, recommends a steamed ginger pudding with Baileys and caramel sauce and coconut ice cream.
“This is simple and easy to make no matter if is in a small batch or for a few friends and family, perfect for a special occasion and to impress all your guests,” he said.
Adrian chose this dish as he said food at Christmas is all about indulging and this delicious dessert is the perfect way to end a fabulous festive meal. It has rich,

The chef recommends a bottle of Feline I Monili Primitivo or Mi Lugar Rioja Vino de Quel to go with the dish.
“Or for a very special occasion you can go with a great bottle of Barbaresco Roncaglie Poderi Colla,” he said.
Sami Bouaziz, kitchen manager at Brocco on the Park, chose a classic chocolate fondant presented simply in a deep bowl with icing sugar, raspberry, and a viola leaf.

With new owners and a new outlook, Abbeydale Road’s Barrowboy is on the up once again.
he team behind Banner Cross’s award-winning The Dark Horse has spread its wings a little further and have now added Abbeydale Road’s Barrowboy bar to its stable.
TAfter taking over earlier this year, they have made some sweeping changes, decorating the space, adding extra windows and have upgraded the food and drink offering, bringing it more in line with their successful S11 venture.
Once again they’re working with Slap And Pickle to provide the food but burgers have been swapped out for (Japanese dumplings) as well as loaded fries. This all comes under the brand of ‘Baochickawowow’.
Barrowboy is that it’s now open all day every day, so you can pop in for coffee, lunch, after-work drinks or late-night cocktails. There are some original creations of the latter, such as the Peach Caipriniha or OnlyFans Martini, as well as draught ales from the likes of Abbeydale and Salt breweries as well as staples including
Peroni, Asahi and Aspalls.
Arriving for lunch, we had to forgo the alcoholic offering (although I couldn’t resist a half of Heathen) but took a seat in the window to make our food selections.
Barrowboy has a meal offer of two bao,
£15 but we decided to go a la carte and chose pork and chicken baos (£6 each or
fries (£4.50) and some crunchy miso slaw (£3.50).
‘No Duck Duck’ versions as well as a twist on a Slap And Pickle burger favourite, the double-up as toppings on the loaded fries if you fancy something more substantial and there’s a huge amount of sauces to choose from too.
The Pork Gua Bao was paired with the onion, hoisin and sesame and contrasted crispy pork belly with soft, pillowy bao. The Chicka-bao was deliciously crisp and complemented by lettuce, banh mi pickles,
lao gan ma mayo and sesame. The dumplings were nice and crisp too dipping sauce.
Barrowboy offers dessert, again with a
Moons’ ice cream mochi (£6) before and not being too keen, we decided to try a custard bao (£5), which was served warm
The Abbeydale Road bar has also ventured into Bottomless Brunch (£35pp) territory, which must be pre-booked and is served every Saturday and Sunday. It offers
marys or pints of Jute or Asahi. There’s much more in the pipeline so keep an eye on their socials (@ barrowboybar or @baochicka) to keep up to date.

Susan has a renewed enthusiasm thanks to the St Luke’s team.
usan Walker admits that her 2019 diagnosis with Motor Neurone Disease destroyed her life as she had known it.
But with the support of the St Luke’s Hospice team she has rediscovered a joy for life she thought she had lost.
“The diagnosis came in December of that year and I will never forget it,” Susan recalls.
“I worked in the NHS as a GP receptionist, so perhaps I had too much knowledge about it but it meant things like losing my driving license and then I lost all my independence.
“Now I can’t even hug my two beautiful granddaughters and that’s hard – it destroyed my life.
“As I lie here in bed at home I can’t even lift my arm to wipe my eyes or nose, I can’t do something as simple as have a drink on my own and I have to be dressed and fed –but I still eat and enjoy my food!”
Most of the caring for Susan is carried out by husband Gerry in the couple’s home
But she also has regular visits to the St Luke’s Patient and Family Support Service, where she receives extra care from Complementary Therapist Joanne Harthill.
“The hospital referred me to St Luke’s because I was getting down because I do like to speak to different people and do different things,” Susan explains.
Luke’s and I hit it off with her straight away but the whole team are great too.”
During her visits, Susan has received help with essential exercise – important to her when movement is now so limited – and had support with areas such as pain management.
“Things like hand massage are really important to me because my hands are really swollen and sore but it’s not just the massage – they’ll also paint my nails for me,” she says.
“The relaxation techniques I have been taught have been a really big help to me too.
“What’s important too is that for maybe half an hour we just chat about what’s happening in life and the world and it’s so lovely to be with people who are so friendly.
“It’s like meeting up with your best friends and I really can’t thank them enough for what they do – it’s the kindness that means so much and I wasn’t expecting that.
thought: ‘Oh dear, they will want to talk to me about death and dying’ but it’s not like that at all.
“I look forward to it every time and when I get home I feel refreshed and one of the big things is that if I want to ask them anything I know they are there for me.
“I hold the greatest regard for St Luke’s and I would say to anybody in my position that if you get the offer to go you should take it.
“They are lovely kind people who will talk on your level about anything you want and will make you feel a much better person by the time you come out.
patients like Susan, both in their own homes and at the St Luke’s In Patient Centre - and there are many ways that you can help that work to continue.
Supporters can make a regular donation, leave a gift to the hospice in their Will, take part in the popular St Luke’s Lottery or support one of the many St Luke’s fundraising events throughout the year.
The next major event is the always popular St Luke’s Festival of Light, which will be held in the hospice’s Little Common Lane gardens on Sunday 1 December, hosted by BBC Look North presenter and keen St Luke’s supporter Tom Ingall.

Christmas trees
Many German immigrants already put up Christmas trees in Britain and they were used by the royal family 50 years prior to Prince Albert bringing them over from Germany, but after a picture of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their children, stood in front of a Christmas tree was published in the Illustrated London News in 1848, the decoration soon became popular throughout British households.
White Christmases
Writer Charles Dickens was born into something of a mini ice age in London and his Christmases were always snowy. A Christmas Carol was a huge part of a Victorian Christmas revival and many customs from this novel have survived today.

Charles was referred to me through another Which Trusted Trader. He popped around straight away to check the water leak and do an initial diagnosis. We agreed a start date and Charles arrived and did all the investigations, cutting through the ceiling to access underneath the shower unit. The leak turned out to come from two places and required Charles to do a couple of visits, repairs and tests to fully resolve. Then the job was finished off with a lovely replastered ceiling. Really good communication, very thoughtful, and pleasant to work with. A true professional.
Which? Review - South Yorkshire
I found Charles on a website, got two quotes one for him and one from another builder for the job I wanted, even though Charles was a bit more expensive he sounded like a good bloke and gave me good feeling that he was capable of doing a good job, I struck gold with him. He first did a kitchen installation and a months later he did the complete bathroom. He and his apprentice were always on time and were very friendly. Cleaned up every day before the left. Would recommend him!

Give the gift of a professionally written will this Christmas
Sometimes it pays to call in the experts, writes Laura Cowan, head of Graysons private client team.
eciding what to give at Christmas is never easy, is it? Why not consider something far more important than the usual jumper, slippers or perfume, and give your family peace of mind by planning for their future and having a professional write your will.
Do-it-yourself (DIY) wills may be on the increase, but so are reports suggesting that they are failing more than ever. Over 10,000 people dispute inheritance every year and probate disputes have more than doubling in 2023 since 2016.
Having a professionally written will is vital to ensure it is not disputed when you die. Here, Laura Cowan, head of Graysons private client team discusses some of the most frequent mistakes that lead to DIY wills being challenged or failing.
Only a person aged 18 or over can make a will and it must be in writing and witnessed – it cannot simply be recorded or left verbally (apart from privileged wills for those on active military service). Often, even written DIY wills are invalid because amendments or crossing out appear on the document that has been signed, or because
Challenges can happen when someone believes that the testator didn’t have the mental capacity to make a will when it was written. Specialist private client lawyers,
relating to mental capacity and can also ensure that the testator is not under any undue pressure.
Incorrectly signed and witnessed wills are invalid and are a frequent reason why
DIY wills fail. A will must be signed by the testator in front of two witnesses (at the same time) who must sign it in front of each other and the testator. Witnesses or

who has already died, and there is no default provision, the whole estate will be subject to the rules of intestacy and may go to the Crown. Claims by those who think they should have been named in a will, or have been disinherited in one, are also frequent with DIY wills. Professionally written wills, that follow the correct legal process are more likely defeat such claims.
DIY wills sometimes don’t name guardians for young children, which can result in lengthy and expensive court proceedings to obtain legal responsibility for the child, and the child could end up living with someone other than who the testator would have chosen.
An executor must be named for a will. If not, someone who would be entitled under the intestacy rules would need to apply for a ‘grant of letters of administration with the will’, to manage the estate and deal with the wishes within the will. It’s worth remembering that executors are responsible for ensuring that an estate is distributed in accordance with the wishes within the will. This can be a complex task, dealing with issues such as applying for grant of probate,
including tax. They must be chosen carefully. Laura says: “These are just a few examples of issues that can go wrong with homemade wills. Unfortunately, there are many more and it is saddening to see those who thought that they were are misunderstood or the will is deemed invalid. Using a professional to write your will can minimise the risk of that happening and help you to ensure that your family is properly provided for.”
Here at Graysons, we have many years’ experience in writing wills and understand the sometimes complex needs of families. We are happy to discuss your individual wishes at a no obligation appointment. Contact us now to make an appointment.
