appy new year and welcome to our February issue of Westside. This month is our ‘Confetti’ wedding special and in this issue we will be looking at businesses that can help your big day run without a hitch. We focus on fashion and beauty, look at the trends that are going to be big (or small in some cases) in 2021 and put some Champagnes to the test. As part of our ‘Made in Sheffield’ feature we focus on a city silversmiths whose work has taken them from a garage in Wincobank to a concession in Harrods. Their silver gifts are perfect for any wedding celebration. Elsewhere we go bold in our Home and Garden section with Pantone’s colours of the year and get the latest motoring news. Next month we’ll be focusing on food and fitness, although not necessarily at the same time. See you then.

f there were any positives to take from 2020 - and let’s be honest, there weren’t many one of them was a strong and resilient housing market. Despite the ongoing pandemic, it seems that people, maybe prompted by extended periods in their own homes, were still keen to improve their property prospects and demand was clearly high. In fact, leading search portal Zoopla reported that house prices in England had increased by an average of £11,037 last year. This year looks to continue that trend and even at this early stage, interest is already high, particularly in south-west Sheffield and north Derbyshire, areas that benefit from good schools, parks and local amenities as well as excellent public transport links and access to beautiful countryside in the nearby Peak District. Andrew Mills, who heads up Hunters Estate and Letting agents, is equally positive about the year ahead. “It looks like 2021 is going to be an interesting year, the Brexit deal is now done and housebuyers still have the incentive of the cut in stamp duty until 31 March,” he said. “Extended periods at home has meant people have really considered their surroundings and been spurred into action, whether they want more bedrooms, a bigger garden or better school catchment. RightMove has reported a 40 per cent increase in activity on their portal over the Christmas period compared to the previous year and we have already seen this interest turned into enquiries.” Hunters Estate and Letting agents at Sheffield Hunters Bar sits at the hub of one of the city’s most vibrant areas, Ecclesall Road. Small and friendly, they offer lots of expertise in sales and lettings in the local area, including the city centre. “We effectively sell properties ranging from one-bedroom investment apartments up to large, executive style detached residences and everything in between. Our database of active buyers is comprehensive and eclectic and is optimised to suit a huge range of property,” added Andrew. “Whether you’re a property seller, landlord, buyer or tenant, our Sheffield Hunters Bar office is ideally located and staffed to suit your needs. Our unique account management service ensures all our clients have one expert point of
I
contact, producing streamlined communication, informed advice and an unparalleled accompanied viewing service resulting in the very best prices.” Whether you’re buying, selling or renting, it’s important to look for an agent who can provide you with everything you need. Hunters is an estate agency that has a track record of customer satisfaction; it currently has a 96 per cent rating meaning customers have complete confidence in the service they receive. For them, focusing on a customer’s overall level of happiness is essential. After all, if an agent was good at pricing property but poor at listing properties, the customer wouldn’t be too impressed with the service. Any property transaction requires a lot of aspects to come together, so the best estate agent for the role is one who combines these elements in one comprehensive package. The Hunters office at Hunters Bar is open for all enquiries and is fully cooperating with government guidelines. “It goes without saying that the safety of
our staff and you, our customers remains our priority during this period,” said Andrew. “The housing market is open, and we want you to be confident, whether buying, selling, letting or renting, you are receiving the best, safe, service possible. “We are committed to selling and letting properties but for us, it isn’t just back to business as usual. We have all learned a lot through the COVID -19 pandemic and continue to do so. We know that many of you are still unsure about what is allowed, and what isn’t, and even under the guidance may not want to be in other people’s homes, or indeed allow others into yours. If you need to, or want to move property during this time, but are shielding or wish to limit social contact as much as possible, we have a vast range of virtual services available to help you with your move. “If you’re comfortable to have inhome appointments, we can continue doing these with only two households in the property in one viewing.” Andrew is supported by a team of five who have all undertaken Hunters’ National Qualification - their very own NAEA and ARLA-endorsed estate agency qualification - in either sales or lettings, which means they’re well placed to help you with any aspect of the market. Give them a call on 0114 267 2080 to see how they can help you. Tim Bagguley, managing director of Direct Gas, said: “We are counting our blessings here at Direct Gas, not only have we weathered the storm that was 2020 but I am pleased to say we have still been able to meet the needs of our customers. This has been a year of increased demand for repairs and replacement boilers due to our customers spending more time in their own homes. “At the very beginning of the pandemic, we recognised the need for additional training and PPE to keep our engineers and customers safe. We work diligently to ensure all the work we carry out in people’s homes is risk accessed and keep up to date with Government advice and guidelines. “Our engineers have worked extremely hard under some incredibly challenging circumstances and I am grateful to both them and the hardworking office team for delivering exceptional service to our valued clients. “We are well placed to continue offering our service throughout 2021 and look forward to hearing from customers, old and new. Stay safe, keep warm and remember, we are here to help with all your domestic plumbing and heating needs.” Direct Gas offer a wide range of plumbing services – from a simple tap washer to complete bathroom renovations. Whatever the task, their engineers operate efficiently and
diligently and have all received the latest training to meet Government standards during the current pandemic. Direct Gas are proud of their Which Trusted Trader and Derbyshire Trusted Trader status but repeat customer base is especially important to them. They offer customers two-hour time slots to prevent unnecessary waiting and would never carry out additional work or repairs without agreeing the cost beforehand. Friendly, safe approach MOONLIGHT TEXTILES CONTINUE TO WORK HARD BEHIND THE SCENES AND CAN STILL VISIT YOUR HOME SAFELY. ow, more than ever, it is paramount that businesses protect themselves and their customers during this global Covid-19 pandemic. Moonlight Textiles, a familyowned business established in 1985, are understanding of the Government’s most recent initiative to impose the January lockdown to help and achieve this. This longstanding Sheffield company specialises in made-to-measure curtains and related accessories but as a nonessential retailer, they have had to close their Abbeydale Road showroom. “It is important that the economy and local businesses survive during this unprecedented period and the laws surrounding the most current guidelines help us retailers to achieve this by allowing us to operate behind the scenes, running our business manufacturing curtains and blinds whilst still being able to conduct our home/site surveys and professional fitting service,” said managing director Paul Smith. Indeed, the hard work continues
N
behind the scenes at Moonlight Textiles. Their team of advisers are still on hand, complemented by in-house seamstresses who create the custom designs, as well as an experienced installation team to fit them. “Let us come to you in your home bringing fabric and blind samples to help with fabric choice, shade and style. Our advisers and installers are temperature checked each morning and will continue to hand sanitise, wear face masks and disposable gloves plus maintain a healthy social distance where possible,” added Paul. “Moonlight hope that you all made the most of the Christmas break and had an enjoyable time. We would also like to wish you all a ‘Happy New Year’ - let’s hope it is a positive one and we can start to work towards something resembling ‘normality’.” With their friendly, safe approach and wide range of products and services, it’s little wonder that Moonlight Textiles are still going strong over three decades in.

Enjoy your conservatory all year round SAGARS’ REVOLUTIONARY 365 CONSERVATORY ROOF INSULATION SYSTEM KEEPS CONSERVATORIES WARM IN WINTER AND COOL IN SUMMER. onservatories have long been a desirable addition to the home but too often become neglected parts of the house if they’re too cold in winter and too hot in summer. But what if that could change? Sagars’ 365 conservatory roof insulation system can transform your conservatory and make it into a room you can use all year round . At this time of year it’s all about keeping warm and Sagars’ insulation system, originally believed to have been inspired by NASA, can do just that, as well as keeping you super cool in summer. The insulation is built up of complex layers of aluminium foil and insulation that is perfect for insulating conservatory roofs, reducing heat loss by about 95 per cent and keeping the heat out in summer. It’s finished with brilliant white tongue and groove insulated pvc panels to give a maintenance-free bright appearance. Using the 365 insulation system, Sagars, a family-based Yorkshire company, have been turning hundreds of draughty unused conservatories into rooms that can be used for any purpose, all year round. VAT is charged at five per cent as this type of insulation comes under the government’s energy savings rate. The cost of a 365 system is far less than you might think, with a 3m x 3m conservatory typically costing around £1,699 including VAT, fitting and comes with a ten-year guarantee. All work is completed in the day, following government social distancing guidelines to keep customers and fitters safe.

TRUSTPILOT FIVE-STAR REVIEWS: “What can I say apart from excellent. They arrived on time, did an excellent job, when finished left it as clean and tidy as it was when they arrived. It looks really good, very pleased and impressed with the quality of the work. Can’t believe how warm it is already. If you are thinking about it like I was, just get it done, you won’t regret it. Will definitely recommend.” Dawn, 5 January 2021 “Great company to do business with. Had my conservatory clad and now it’s a cosy functioning space. The two guys who attended were really nice and just got on with it and cleaned up after themselves. Great price too. Would definitely recommend.” Elaine, 8 January 2021 For more reviews, please search Trustpilot.

Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management "Absolutely delighted!" "We had built an extension on the top part of our garden, in order to free up the necessary space for an open-plan, spacious living space, which we could use all year round for cooking, dining and relaxing. Working to a very tight timeframe, we approached Dan from Dave Stone Design to see if, firstly, he could translate our ideas into reality and, secondly, if he could meet our exacting demands in terms of deadlines. Dan came up with the innovative designs to match our criteria. His determination was absolutely outstanding to complete the job in a couple of weeks. We are absolutely delighted with the end result. We now have a beautiful new kitchen with an induction hob, a composite undermounted sink, a combi microwave oven, a warming drawer, two dual-cook-flex Samsung ovens, LED lighting, a quartz worktop, and an island kitchen with considerable storage. Grey designer radiators have been fitted for additional heating when needed. We now have an open-plan kitchen, dining room and sitting room, where we can spend quality family time, as well as a social area, for when friends come to visit. A brilliant piece of craftsmanship." BUSINESS NEWS
Free Business school encourages Sheffield start-ups Sheffield’s entrepreneurs of the future are being offered places on a free, acclaimed online workshop which aims to get them up and running, even in the face of restrictions. The hugely popular PopUp Business School, run in partnership with Sheffield City Council and three major housing associations, is coming to the city between 8-12 February. The online course is aimed at everyone, from those with no cash or business experience to fledgling start-ups that need guidance to keep on track. PopUp’s events are led by successful entrepreneurs and professionals and include advice from those who have overcome the ups and downs of business life but then gone on to succeed. Its events usually have close to 200 attendees, with many making sales, launching websites creating new businesses during the event. Simon Paine, PopUp Business School co-founder and CEO, says he wants to help Sheffield bounce back after a wretched year of restrictions and crises. “We know Sheffield has been hit hard over the past year, with businesses closed and people being ill, or worse. But we want to tap into some of that inner Sheffield steel we know is still there, and help people regain control of their lives.” You can book a free place via the PopUp Business School website: https://events.popupbusinessschool.co.uk/ SheffieldFebruary2021
Tackling skills shortage A regional skills partnership for the Sheffield City Region is aiming to tackle current and future skills shortages in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Regional Post-18 Education Partnership has been developed to identify positive and practical actions which can impact the most disadvantaged young people and adults in the region as they enter the post-18 system through education or work. The Partnership is aiming to support those young people and adults most impacted by educational disparity. Secondary school pupils in the region who receive free school meals for 80 per cent or more of their school lives are on average 25 months behind in their academic progress compared to their peers. For more information visit https://www.shu.ac.uk/aboutus/regional-post-18-partnership 46 www.sheffieldvibe.com
New partnership Sheffield-headquartered postural support specialist, Jenx, has announced a new year-long partnership with High Greenbased Paces, a specialist school for conductive education. Jenx – alongside its UK distribution division, Jiraffe – will work with the school across fundraising activities and events for the next 12 months, after the charity was selected as the company’s charity of the year for 2021. The partnership will provide Jenx staff with the opportunity to personally support children with special needs at Paces School in High Green through volunteering activities and initiatives. Funds raised by the partnership will contribute to the £3.5million needed by Paces for its new state-of-the-art home, a move which would enable the charity to support up to three times as many families with the hope of no longer having to turn anyone away. Paces specialises in supporting children and adults living with neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis (MS), which affect their physical and learning ability. The partnership announcement follows a donation by Jiraffe of a specialist ‘Rifton Tricycle’ to ten-year-old Sheffield fundraising hero ‘Captain’ Tobias Weller, who was recently crowned Young Unsung Hero at BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2020. Captain Tobias used his Rifton Trike to complete a 480mile virtual bike ride which raised funds for Paces. The youngster is also currently embarking on yet another challenge – this time an Iron Man triathlon.
Cutting-edge engagement Switchstance like to bring a fresh perspective to projects, challenging the norm wherever they can. Supporting their clients to drive their innovative ideas and turn them into a reality is what makes them tick. So, the opportunity to help bring cutting-edge customer engagement app MyGeo to market was right up their street. They started as they often do with an in-depth discovery project. This helped to pull the great ideas out of their clients’ minds and turn them into a realistic digital strategy to make MyGeo a reality. Providing application design, technical consultancy and development alongside the Appsi Co team, the groundbreaking MyGeo mobile app for iOS and Android was born. Since the launch, development on MyGeo is ongoing, never standing still, always looking for opportunities to innovate.

At the start of 2021, we can all look back and be amazed at how the world has changed over the last year. Covid-19 has had, and is continuing to have, a massive impact and has caused the untimely death of many people, placed enormous stress on health care provision and changed the way we work, travel, socialise and play. ZOOM, Microsoft Teams and Facetime have become the new communication method and working from home has brought about new ways of doing business for many. The good news is that both the Pfizer and Oxford AstraZeneca vaccines are now being rolled out and the most vulnerable are being prioritised alongside our key workers and NHS. Whilst this latest lockdown is an unfortunate necessity, the vaccination programme offers a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel and we look forward with optimism that we can return to some form of normality, in as a safe as way as possible, later this year. Politically, Brexit has continued to dominate and we managed to leave the transition period with a trade deal. This month will see a new US president with Joe Biden moving into the White House (assuming that Donald Trump will move out!)
Markets do what they do when uncertainty prevails and we saw the biggest falls of recent times in March as the full impact of the first lockdown was felt. Markets then climbed in the second half of 2020 and now look to have settled back into normal trading levels. So what about the future? Well, markets will continue to do what they do - go up and down. Interest rates are at an all-time low. Savers are being punished if they hold too much in cash. The returns on bank accounts are derisory. If inflation is at 2.5% p.a. and your savings are getting less than 1% p.a. your money is eroding. We believe that in the short-term, cash is king. Make sure you have enough to cover the next few years. Any surplus wealth you have should be invested in areas that allow you to keep pace with inflation and offer some growth potential. People are now looking to transfer money into different areas so they can profit from the new economic climate we are living in. We know that there is a range of funds that can offer low risk to very high-risk funds and can assist you in finding the best place for your money. There will be bumps in the road but don’t panic, focus on what you can control and
mitigate risks elsewhere. Businesses will continue to fail and new ones will take their place. This is usual. However, the pace of change has quickened over the last year. We strongly believe that good companies, with sound management, low indebtedness and strong markets will continue to flourish. Rest assured that we will continue to monitor the companies and funds that we manage on your behalf and are working hard to minimise costs whilst offering support wherever we can. Now is a time for us all to reflect, focus on the future and make sure our families are all safe and well. If this last year has taught us anything, it’s that plans change. Maybe you’ve decided to bring your retirement plans forward or are looking to try and pay off the remainder of your mortgage. How can you maintain contact with children following separation? HEAD OF THE FAMILY TEAM AT GRAYSONS, BRADIE PELL, ADDRESSES YOUR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS. ne of the biggest challenges for separated parents is ensuring that each has a reasonable amount of contact with their children. In most cases, children have the right to see and to have a relationship with both of their parents, and it’s important to avoid letting personal feelings interfere with this. All parents want to do the best for their children, and the children’s welfare should be at the forefront of all decisions and arrangements made. Fortunately, many different arrangements can be put in place which can usually be flexible enough to meet any family’s specific circumstances. Here, our partner and head of the family team at Graysons, Bradie Pell,

answers some of the questions we are frequently asked about children and separation. Who decides how much contact I can have with my children?
Decisions about contact and your children’s living arrangements can be made in several ways. You and your expartner will need to agree where the children will live, how they will be supported financially and the amount of time they will spend with each parent. Usually, parents can reach an understanding between themselves on these issues. You can record the agreement in an informal parenting plan, or a family solicitor can draft a legally
binding agreement that a court can give its consent to. Should you and your expartner be unable to agree on terms, you can try to resolve any outstanding issues through a mediator. A mediator’s job is to ensure that both parents can make their points and to try to resolve disputes so that an agreement can be reached without going to court. If the mediation does not work or is not possible due to abuse or violence in the relationship, then a court order can be sought to help settle the issues. This is usually the last resort when all other routes have failed. What arrangements are available for contact with children?
Generally, if you are the parent who does

not live with your children, you should be allowed a ‘reasonable’ amount of contact. Contact should only be withdrawn if that contact would be against your children’s best interests. Contact is defined as ‘direct’ when you are physically with your children, or ‘indirect’ when it is via phone calls, letters, emails or other non-physical methods. You can make arrangements that are flexible and suit your children’s needs and your family’s specific situation. For example, your children may live with both parents at different times, or they may live with just one of you and have pre-arranged dates when they spend time with the other parent. This might mean your children having regular overnight stays or spending weekends with the non-resident parent or alternating between longer periods of residency at each household. You will need to consider practical issues too, such as where the children go to school and work commitments. How flexible can the arrangements be?
Contact arrangements can be as flexible as you want them to be, as long as they work for you and your children. You may be able to arrange specific dates for your children to spend time with each parent well in advance, or you might need, or prefer, to make more short-term arrangements. When it comes to holidays and important dates like Christmas, you might want to agree to share contact, or you may wish to agree that your children spend their holidays or Christmas with one of you one year and the other the following year. What else do we need to think about?
However you decide to manage contact with your children, it’s important to be clear and to communicate effectively with their other parent. Both parents must be reasonable and considerate when making and following the arrangements. You may want to agree on issues such as what types of parental decisions can be taken without prior discussion and which decisions you need to make together. It’s also worth agreeing on the
times of the day when indirect contact is appropriate. Whatever arrangements you reach, remember that children should have access to, and a relationship with, both parents wherever possible, as long as it is safe. If you are in a situation where contact is difficult due to a problematic relationship between you as parents, you can arrange for meetings to take place in an agreed, neutral place (COVID 19 restrictions permitting). This might help to remove some of the emotional elements from the equation. Outside of COVID 19 restrictions, you can also arrange for contact to take place in a supervised setting, which could be the house of a mutual friend, at a grandparent’s or a contact centre. This can provide added peace of mind, helping to resolve potential disputes. If you have any safeguarding concerns about contact taking place, or you need to discuss where and how you can meet your children during the COVID 19 lockdown, you should obtain legal advice. However you feel about your expartner, it is important to accept that your children are entitled to a relationship with them and that you have a responsibility to allow and encourage that to happen. Drawing up an agreed parenting plan can help to ensure that any arrangements and boundaries are clear and defined – and that you have addressed and talked about important decisions constructively and collaboratively. Communicating and coming to an agreement early on will help everyone to follow the arrangements and reduce any potential future issues. If you are unable to agree, seeking solicitor advice early can be helpful, giving both parties clarity and accurate information, which can prevent disagreements from escalating. How does COVID 19 affect contact with my child?
A third coronavirus lockdown has now been announced in the UK. Since March 2020, the pandemic and subsequent restrictions that have limited contact between households have left many separated parents worried and confused.
The latest ‘stay at home’ guidance was published on 4 January 2021 and states that “individuals may not leave or be outside their home except when they have a reasonable excuse”. Continuing existing arrangements for contact between children and parents who live apart is a “reasonable excuse”. Whilst everybody needs to be extra vigilant, and it is important to take care to minimise the risk of spreading the infection at all times. Children under 18 are allowed to move between households where it is safe to do so and where nobody in either household is showing symptoms of the virus. Existing court orders do remain legally binding although both parents are free to agree a variation to arrangements in light of the pandemic, as long as this is mutually agreed by both of you. In some cases, for example if there are vulnerable people in either household, it may be necessary and reasonable to restrict direct contact during this period and you may wish to consider whether travelling or arrangements to meet in a public place are appropriate. It might be necessary, in some situations, to agree increased indirect contact via telephone or online methods such as Facetime from time to time during the pandemic and agree to increase direct contact when possible. What is important is that the children’s relationship continues to be promoted with, and by, both parents as long as it is safe to do so. No separation is easy, but it is possible to navigate the obstacles successfully, even in these difficult times. All family situations are different, but it is more than possible, where it is safe to do so, to reach a fair agreement that ensures both parents can successfully maintain healthy contact with their children. For while the retail side of the charity remains shut during lockdown, more items are now being placed for sale on the Emmaus Sheffield eBay page. “It was very disappointing for both our companions and our customers when we had to close our second hand superstore again,” said Emmaus Sheffield deputy manager Charley Fedorenko. “But there is still a great way to support us by taking a look at some of our great range of items including computer games and consoles and DVDs - on our eBay page, where we are hoping they will generate some extra interest and income.” Emmaus Sheffield is the drug and alcohol free project that provides a home, support and work for formerly homeless people in the city. Sterling reputation FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO A HARRODS CONCESSION, SHEFFIELD’S HISTORIC CARRS SILVER’S CUTLERY AND GIFTS MAKE FOR THE PERFECT WEDDING GIFT. wedding is such a joyous occasion full of celebration and sentiment. With many falling victim to Covid restrictions in 2020, either cancelled, rearranged to taking place with restricted numbers, we’re hoping this year sees a return to a new normal. After all, what is a wedding celebration without its guests? If you’re able and lucky enough to be invited to a wedding in 2021 you’ll need a gift, something with the right amount of thought, that can be classic or contemporary and that will stand the test of time. Carrs Silver has been creating such gifts since its inception over 40 years ago that have gone on to be cherished all over the world. You can really make a statement with a Carrs solid silver picture frame, a flagship

product that is now joined by a whole lot more. Carrs Silver is a relatively new silverware company, by comparison, having been founded back in 1976 by Ron Carr. Nowadays, it is the only large scale, start to finish silverware manufacturer remaining in the UK. Headquarters still reside in Mosborough, Sheffield, in a 110,000 square foot, purpose-built factory, making Carrs not only the last of their kind in the UK, but also the last large scale cutlers in the ‘Steel City’. Carrs founder Ron, who left a factory position to go it alone, was a trailblazer, a visionary and a true Sheffield gentleman. He forged Carrs Silver into a luxury giftware brand which retained the quality and craftsmanship the city is

known for. Carrs very quickly developed a sterling reputation, a huge achievement for a company which started in Ron’s garage in Wincobank. The brand has had a concession in Harrods for the past 30 years, cementing their place as one of the UK’s leading luxury manufacturers. The independent family business supply seven royal families with not only cutlery and giftware, but bespoke pieces including solid silver tea trollies, incense burners, urns, racing trophies, salvers and coffee sets – if something can be created in silver, Carrs have probably made it! With customers in over 80 countries, the factory in Mosborough is creating some wonderful antiques of the future – whilst ensuring that Sheffield remains the worldwide home of cutlery. Of course, everybody knows that the finest cutlery in the world has long been associated with the city of Sheffield. In fact, in 1340, the inventory of King Edward III’s possessions in the tower of London included a Sheffield knife. With history this rich and a world famous reputation, it’s so important to continue to champion this fantastic craft – and this Sheffield family business are truly leading the charge. But this is not an easy business to be in. As with many of the UK’s traditional manufacturing industries, silversmithing has seen some tough times. In 2010, proud cutlery makers Osborne Tableware group were in difficulty – the group included Nickel Blanks, Beatson Drake, Jessop & Smith and Rutland cutlery, all manufacturers with hundreds of years of history operating in Sheffield. Carrs were determined not to see the trade and assets leave Sheffield and bought Osbornes in order to ensure that this magnificent legacy remained in the city it belongs in. Along with the trade and assets, Carrs acquired a huge assortment of tools and dies, some dating back to the early 1900s. In their vast archives, there are now over 12,000 tools and dies, many of which are still used in creating their beautiful cutlery today. “It has always been our mission to ensure that large scale cutlery manufacturing didn’t leave Sheffield altogether,” says Richard, Ron’s son – who took over as managing director when Ron passed away in 2012. “Although we’ve been making cutlery since the mid-eighties, the thought of Osbornes’ history coming to an end, or their tools and dies being snapped up by

Confetti “With customers in over 80 countries, the factory in Mosborough is creating some wonderful antiques of the future – whilst ensuring that Sheffield remains the worldwide home of cutlery.” a company outside of Sheffield, didn’t sit well with us.” Richard and his brothers, Andrew and Martin, now run the company and work to keep not only Ron’s legacy going, but the legacy of Osbornes too, whose history stretches back almost 300 years. They have invested heavily in quality control, production management and a brand new website to ensure that the standard of everything they produce remains exceptionally high. The way they see it, their brand is known all over the world, so it’s important to keep the reputation of Sheffield cutlery ‘well polished’. Carrs, like many other businesses, will not come out of the pandemic unscathed. Their Sheffield shop – Sheffield Scene on Surrey Street – had a lease up for renewal in 2021 and Carrs won’t be renewing. Footfall is drastically down in Sheffield city centre and unfortunately this led to the sad decision to shut the shop, which was part of Osbornes Tableware and came with the buy out in 2010. Carrs value their hospitality clientele and recognise that the restaurant and hotel industry have been one of the hardest hit during the pandemic. Richard and his family have therefore developed a gifting initiative to gift remaining stock in the shop to local hospitality who may benefit from cutlery and tableware, when they can reopen. “We hope that this small token will help them in some way,” says Richard. “It’s our way of letting them know how important Sheffield hospitality is to us.” Carrs Silver is available online at www.carrs-silver.co.uk at John Lewis, Harrods and many local stockists (online and in store). 54 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Finding the perfect match THERE’S SO MUCH TO THINK ABOUT WHEN IT COMES TO CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING RING. PA JEWELLERY HAS PLENTY OF ADVICE – AND EXPERIENCE. hoosing your wedding rings is a key part of planning your big day and can be one of the most fun, trying on beautiful, shining styles and picking out the perfect design. Many couples like to plan ahead and visit their jeweller to gather information about styles and budget some months before making a final decision. Lockdown restrictions during the Covid19 pandemic may make this more challenging and we can narrow down the details once you make it into the showroom, but there are many decisions you can make (or at least consider) beforehand.

What metal do I want?
For most brides this is easy as you will want to match your engagement ring, but if that is not the case there are lots of options available! Alongside the traditional precious metals, you can now find alternatives such as steel, titanium or tungsten. Each metal has its own pros and cons: to learn more about these there are information pages and blogs available on our website. 56 www.sheffieldvibe.com
What style of ring do I want?
Plain, patterned or set with diamonds? There has never been more choice! The classic wedding band is still by far the most popular choice. There are various profiles, widths and finishes that may be applied to this so-called ‘plain’ design to personalise it to your specifications. For those who want something a bit different there are also hundreds of patterns available ranging from the traditional to the contemporary. Alternatively, you may choose a band set with sparkling diamonds, chosen with precision to perfectly complement your engagement ring. Do I need a bespoke design?
There are several reasons why a bespoke design may be your choice. Many brides prefer their wedding and engagement rings to nestle neatly together and although modern engagement rings are often designed to allow this, those with a more traditional,
cluster or twist setting may require a handmade ring to follow the curves of the design. You may have a particular design in mind that you cannot find or may wish to incorporate sentimental family jewellery into your band. Whatever the reason, our workshop will be happy to help bring your idea to life. More information to help you get started can be found in the Choosing Wedding Rings blog on our website https://www.pajewellery.com/blogs/pajewellery/choosing-wedding-rings - or feel free to contact us with any questions. You can also find details on our website of the things we are doing to keep our customers safe when they visit. Some decisions can only be made by trying the rings on your finger and you can do this in confidence, knowing that we are sterilising all handled samples and rings between each customer. Take the initiative WHAT WILL WEDDINGS LOOK LIKE IN 2021 AND WHAT WILL BE THE BIG TRENDS? WE GET SOME EXPERT ADVICE. he joys of getting married were really put to the test last year as the Covid pandemic lead to ceremonies being cancelled, postponed or greatly reduced in size. This effect is set to continue into this year with wedding trends for 2021 greatly influenced by the events of the last year or so. Here we look at some of the predicted trends for the coming year, with a little help from Lucy Plummer at the Vine Hotels Group.
T
Micro weddings When weddings resume - we’re being positive here - just how many guests will you be able to invite? Smaller ceremonies became the norm in 2020 and these intimate occasions, often with less than 20 guests, are set to continue. In most cases, it will come down to government constraints, but for a lot, the reasoning will be that couples simply want to scale back to just the few family and friends they can’t live without – lockdown has been a period of reflection for many about what’s truly important. “Smaller ceremonies are always so intimate and special, so we can imagine a lot more couples in the future might opt for this even after the restrictions have been lifted,” said Lucy. “However, we know that once the rules allow, a lot of couples will want to have a big celebration with all of their family and friends so larger ceremonies will always be popular.”
Keep things local Lockdown has put a huge strain on the UK economy and, in 2021, we’re going to see more couples choose to keep it local and support their local businesses, be they suppliers, bridal boutiques or caterers. It’s a sentiment echoed by Lucy Plummer: “I think as people become more and more environmentally conscious, there will be a greater emphasis on keeping things local when it comes to suppliers. Particularly with flowers, over the past few years we have seen couples opt for a florist where the flowers are grown locally.” 60 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Weekday weddings Guests can expect to see an influx of invites to weekday weddings in 2021, due in part to the build-up of 2020 weddings which have spilled over into 2021, but also budget considerations for couples who’ve been more stretched than expected. Hiring venues and suppliers is cheaper on weekdays and there’s more likely to be availability. “Weekday weddings have always been popular, however we think this trend will grow and grow,” concurred Lucy. “There tends to be more special offers available on Monday-Thursday dates plus a lot of suppliers offer discounts too. With lots of wedding postponements happening from 2020, the diaries for 2021 and beyond are looking full so we feel more people will opt for a mid-week wedding rather than prolonging the engagement.”
Sustainability Efforts to make weddings sustainable are great ideas for all couples to adopt: arrange a tree planting party for your guests to reduce their carbon footprint; keep food miles down by opting for locally grown meat and vegetables or a vegan menu; serve local beers, wines and spirits; and choose a venue with a beautiful backdrop that doesn’t require lavish decoration that will end up in landfill.
A return to tradition Weddings will go back to their heart: making treasured memories with friends and family. Experts across the wedding industry are predicting tradition to be a defining feature of 2021 weddings, from timeless dresses to nostalgic fragrances and traditional speeches.
Hollywood glamour Following months of elasticated waistbands, couples and their guests will want to go all-out for 2021 weddings. As well as statement and sparkling accessories, expect photoperfect hair and makeup as we make up for lost photo opportunities. Many people will have had to cancel holidays so will be turning to the salon for a sun-kissed look and a bronzed goddess glow to cap their glamorous look.
Pastel colours A palette of soothing shades are set to dominate this year’s celebrations. Think gorgeous lilac, pastel pink, yellow and peach tulips and sweet peas, with a pop of colour such as orange or coral, and stationery of complementing colours too. “In terms of décor trends, a prediction is that pastel colours will become popular for weddings in 2021,” said Lucy. “Another trend is that ‘acts of gratitude’ will be an important part of the wedding day, couples will want to thank guests for attending their wedding and express their appreciation of them. This could be done be a personalised note on the place setting, a drinks voucher to have a special toast with, or a personalised wedding favour.”

A question of taste THERE ARE SOME OCCASIONS WHEN YOU CAN’T GET AWAY WITH PROSECCO WEDDINGS AND VALENTINE’S DAYS ARE NOT COMPLETE WITHOUT THE BUBBLY INDULGENCE OF CHAMPAGNE. BUT WHERE TO FIND THE FINEST? WE PUT A MAGNIFICENT SEVEN TO THE TEST. t’s the essential ingredient for moments of triumph in life, whether you’ve just won the grand prix, passed your exams, or seen your favourite bar liberated from lockdown. We’re talking about Champagne of course, once the preserve of the favoured few, now a mass-market product. But even though just about every supermarket stocks it and most even have their own label, it still evokes luxury wherever you find it, The arguments about the merits of the various brands have been going on ever since the monk Dom Perignon begat his new creation to the world. The very top houses today can command eye-watering prices. Take Krug, for instance, by general consensus king of the hill. When my daughters were born, I decided to try a variant to the old tradition of putting down cases of port for a new son, the
I

idea being that it is perfectly aged when he’s old enough to drink it. Instead, I put down a case of 1988 vintage Krug for each daughter with the promise that they could either drink it or sell it when they reached the age of 18. It cost me £600 for each case. As soon as the first one passed the big birthday, I looked into what it was worth. The first broker I spoke to offered me £2,500 per case. And her decision? Why, to drink it of course, with her new university chums. At a value of just over £70 per glass.
Our thanks to our panellists: Simon Carr Jane Harrigan Rebecca Thompson Kate Mallinson Geoff Norman Georgina Revitt
Student parties were never like that in my day. With such an array of choice open to buyers, there is a tendency to believe that you get what you pay for – so the more expensive it is, the better it is. As part of this journal’s continuing search for the truth come what may, we decided to put that theorem to the test. We chose seven candidate bottles, then had a call round a random set of readers to assemble a jury. “Would you like to drink Champagne all afternoon for free?” we asked. They would. Step forward six good men and women true. The brief was simple. The panel would be given a taste of seven different bottles, their identities hidden from view. They could award up to 10 points to each one, and comment if the urge took them. So were there any surprises in store? See for yourself as we reveal the results of our 2021 test of the best.
067 WSide Feb21 15/01/2021 12:10 Page 1
And the winners are… 1st place
WINNER
Brigitte Delmotte NV (Sunday Times Wine Club £35 a bottle or £29.99 for orders of 12 bottles or more) Scoring a massive 56 out of a possible 60 points, this newcomer was our hands-down winner. Our panel was left struggling for superlatives to pour out in praise of it. “In a word, perfect balance” said Geoff, clearly so overcome that he didn’t notice it was two words. “Scrumeeee! I love it” was Jane’s verdict. “It must be one of the most expensive?” By no means, as it turned out. As we later revealed to our jurors, their verdict is shared by some authorities on Champagne, who have awarded it a string of gold medals.
2nd
Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut (Aldi £12.99) The big surprise of the tasting, taking runner-up spot with 49 points. Rebecca deemed it “everything a Champagne should be – fresh, clean tasting… delicious”. There were gasps when we revealed the identity of the bottle, and even more when we announced the price.
5th
Nicholas Feuillatte (Tesco, £20) Found some fans on the panel, with Kate and Georgina both praising it as “refreshing” and “seriously drinkable” while others including Simon found it “a little too acidic for my liking”. A decision from a divided house brought in score of 42/60.
3rd
Veuve Cliquot yellow label (Harvey Nichols Leeds £46.50) It must be dangerous being a man in the Champagne business if our tasting was any indicator. Not one, but two widows feature among our top three. These formidable ladies must know their stuff. “Full- bodied Champagne with a lovely nose” said Simon. 47/60 points.
6th
Heidsieck Monopole Brut (Majestic £27.99) Generally underwhelmed our panellists, some of whom found it rather acidic with an unpleasant aftertaste. Kate even went so far as to say “it gives me heartburn”. For their part, the panel gave it 34 out of 60.
4th
Krug Grande Cuvee (Around £165 online) Krug is the self-proclaimed king of Champagne, but it received a muted welcome from our jury, who gave it 44 out of 60. “Nice enough but nothing special”, noted Kate, who later realised she could have a case of our second-placed Champagne for the price of one bottle.
7th
Delacourt Brut (M&S £25) Oh dear, oh dear. There was something amiss with this bottle. It was evident as soon as we opened it that the wine was oxidised, with a tell-tale shrivelled cork. Only two jurors even tasted it and deemed it “revolting” and “undrinkable”. 0/60. www.sheffieldvibe.com 67

SOLID AND SPORTY SUVS ARE COMPLEMENTED BY AN 1,800HP ROCKET IN THIS MONTH’S NEWS, WRITES JORDAN CUTFORTH.
Increase the pace The combination of sports/supercar performance in a huge SUV body on paper shouldn’t work, however its appeal has never been greater, and the introduction of the Jaguar F-Pace SVR has certainly showed that. Under the hood lies the infamous 542hp 5.0-litre supercharged V8 developing 700NM of torque. Reaching 62mph from a standstill takes 3.8 seconds and the SVR will reach a top speed of 178mph. Jaguar’s 5.0-litre V8 isn’t known for its fuel economy, and this is apparent here; a combined figure of 23.1mpg is claimed, though don’t expect to achieve this, and it produces 275g/km of CO2. Revisions over the previous SVR model include upgraded braking, new interior, redesigned exterior and upgraded tech. Available to order now with prices start from £77,595.
Cheap champion
World’s fastest? With a 1,817hp twin-turbocharged V8 engine, not only is the Hennessey F5 Venom the most powerful road-going production car in the world, it’s claimed to the fastest production car ever created. For those who are not familiar with Hennessey, they are one of the largest independent automotive tuning companies. Their first car was the 2011 Venom GT, which was based on a heavily modified variant of the Lotus Exige. The F5 Venom is the first car to be designed in house and from the ground-up. Weighing in at 1360kg, and the 1,817hp engine powering the rearwheels, the F5 Venom will achieve 062mph in 2.6 seconds, 0-124mph in 4.7 seconds, and 0-186mph in 8.4 seconds! Hennessey targets a top speed in excess of 311mph.
The Dacia Sandero has been the nation’s undisputed champion of cheap motoring since it’s introduction to the UK back in 2008. This new fourth-generation variant is no different. Starting from £7,995, the Sandero is remarkable value for money for those who want a car simply to travel from A to B. For that price, you get automatic LED headlights with Y-shaped LED daytime running lights, 15-inch steel wheels, front electric windows, speed limiter, phone docking station, Automatic Emergency Braking and six airbags. For the more jacked-up, rugged, utilitarian Sandero Stepway, prices start from £10,995 and include 16-inch Flexwheels, tinted windows, LED headlights, front fog lights and black roof bars on the outside as standard.
Solid and reliable The Hyundai Tuscon has been the go-to dependable SUV for the South Korean brand. The Tuscon is for those wanting a solid, reliable SUV without wanting to spend the extra on more premium brand offerings. The new Tucson range comprises three high-specification models: SE Connect, Premium and Ultimate and is offered with 1.6-litre petrol or petrol-hybrid powertrains. Engines range between 148hp to 227hp. A plug-in-hybrid variant will be available from early 2021 and will have 261hp. As standard, the Tuscon in SE Connect trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, and body-coloured bumpers. Interior features include a leather steering wheel and gear knob, dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control, heated and folding door mirrors, rear parking sensors and a rear-view camera. Prices start from £28,495. Available now.
