‘World class’ service CHANGES ARE AFOOT AT DAVID INMAN OPTICIANS. avid Inman Opticians has started the new year with some positive news - they are now accepting new private and NHS clients. And to help with the increasing demand for their services they have employed Optometrist Emma Niven to work alongside Justin Briddon and James Allen. This welcome news comes after a period that has seen many changes at both the Broomhill and Ecclesall Road stores. James Allen, partner and Optometrist at the Broomhill store, explains more: “The start of the pandemic threw up many challenges for Opticians. Particularly as the majority of traditional equipment was used at such close contact with some parts of the examination still not allowed to be done. We knew we had to adapt. “We completely rethought our eye examinations to take into account the rules and to keep our customers safe. “Out went close contact basic inspections and in came the very latest technology to allow a world class sight test and eye health examination. “The quality and accuracy of our new equipment is incredible, and with a high definition digital record of eye health we can monitor and detect a whole host of eye conditions accurately and safely. The use of hospital grade Optomap and OCT retinal scanners has allowed us to detect and manage many eye conditions over

D

the past 18 months. The Optomap scan works without drops and gives a high definition retinal image which covers 85 per cent of the eye, which is a 20x wider field than hand held equipment. “We also purchased two R800 units which allows a vision and prescription

check from up to two metres away. The accuracy is incredible and our customers are wowed by the technology used and with most eye exams contact free, they feel very safe.” The enhanced testing comes as standard on private examinations and the comprehensive eye care plan which is £4.95 per month. David Inman Opticians recommend the enhanced testing to everyone; NHS patients have the option of upgrading to the enhanced testing or joining the eyecare plan (please see website for more details.) They also stock the latest frames suitable for all budgets including fully bespoke lens and frame options. A beginner’s guide to mortgages EAGER TO GET ON THE PROPERTY LADDER BUT HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO START? WE’VE GOT A COMPLETE GUIDE TO MORTGAGES TO GET YOU STARTED. t’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed when it comes to mortgages. From APR to tracker, fixed rate and every other type of jargon, it’s not always the easiest thing to work out. Especially if you’ve never had significant debt before. Here, we’ll go through everything, from what a mortgage is, how you get one and what one might be best for you. Finding the right mortgage for you doesn’t have to be stressful.

I

What is a mortgage? A mortgage is, simply put, a loan that you get in order to buy a property. For most people, they won’t have the whole amount for the asking price in cash. So they pay a deposit (usually at leastten per cent of the asking price) and then they apply to a mortgage lender (like a bank or building society) for the rest.

How does a mortgage work? A mortgage is a large loan on your property that you will pay off on a monthly basis. The mortgage lender will work out an appropriate repayment amount each month, and this will include the interest that they charge you on the loan.

Most mortgages have a repayment term of around 25 years, but you can get them for shorter or longer periods of time. This means that the total amount of the mortgage, including the interest, has been split over the years it will take to repay it, and that’s how much you pay every month.

Repayment vs interest only mortgages It’s rare to have an interest only mortgage at the moment, as more lenders focus on offering repayment mortgages. Repayment mortgages ensure your monthly payment goes towards both the property value and the interest you owe. So at the end of the term, you own the property and you’ve paid the interest off in full. An interest only mortgage is just that – you only pay the interest. This means you don’t put any equity into your property and at the end of the loan term you still don’t own the property and owe the lender the full amount. This is mainly only available for buy to let properties.

What mortgage can I afford? Your mortgage offers will be dependent on a few factors: Mortgages are taking a

chance on you – they’re giving you a huge amount of money and they have to trust that you are likely to pay it back. Whilst ten per cent is usually the minimum for a deposit (unless you are using a Help to Buy scheme, or certain mortgages where five per cent is accepted), having your deposit be a bigger percentage of your property price will put you in a better position. This is because the lenders will have to give you less, and it will be easier for you to pay it back. Often having a bigger deposit will also open up better offers, saving you money. Mortgage lenders tend to work by the 4.5 rule – they will only lend you 4.5 times your annual income. This can make it harder to buy on your own, compared to buying as a couple or with a friend/family member. This doesn’t make getting a mortgage impossible, you just have to use it as a guide when considering properties. If you are buying with someone else, and your combined income is £50,000 a year, you can apply for a mortgage of £225,000. If you had a deposit of ten per cent, that would be £22,500. So the properties you consider buying should be priced around £247,500. Mortgage underwriters (people who consider your mortgage application) may have a look at the last six months of your accounts to assess whether there are any concerns. Make sure your accounts look healthy, with no overdraft charges, wildly big spends etc.

Where to get a mortgage In short, shop around for the best deal. You’ll find there’s quite a variation in terms of the interest, and how long the mortgage will be fixed for (this means you’ll pay the same set amount every month). However, if you really like your bank or building society, they may offer a great deal to existing customers, so it’s worth asking them about their mortgages. 8 www.sheffieldvibe.com

PROPERTY

You could also consider using a mortgage broker – this is someone who will consider the different offers available on the market that would work best for you. As a specialist they may have access to better deals than those available to the public on comparison sites. Usually a mortgage broker is paid on commission from the lender that you choose to go with, but there may be a fee as well, so be sure to check.

How to apply for a mortgage You’ll need to prove your identity, so a driver’s license/passport as well as a utility bill is good to take. You’ll also need to show your annual income, so a P60 from your employer, your last three months payslips and bank statements for the last 3-6 months will help with this. If you are self employed, you may need to bring your SA302 tax return. You can confirm these details with the lender when you make an appointment, and they should tell you if you need to bring anything else. The lender will go through the application with you. Make sure to ask lots of questions about the mortgage, including the total repayable amount, the rules about overpaying and any charges or fees. When you’ve filled out the application, the lenders will perform a credit check, review the information and arrange a valuation of the property. This is to ensure that the

property you want to buy is worth the amount you are asking for. In general, processing a mortgage application can take between 18-40 days, but may take longer.

or a new one. Make sure you know when your fixed rate ends so you can look for a good deal.

A mortgage in principle

If you’ve arranged a mortgage for 25 years, it doesn’t mean you have to stay in that property until it’s paid off. When you sell your property, the remaining amount left on the mortgage is paid off by the sale, transferred to the mortgage lender, and then you have whatever is left from the sale after that is paid. Ideally, if you have paid off a chunk of your mortgage and your property has increased in value during the time you’ve lived there, you will have enough from the sale for a deposit on a new property. If you haven’t paid off much, and your property hasn’t increased in value, you may find yourself in negative equity. This is when your property is worth less than you bought it for. If this is the case, you may still owe the mortgage lender after selling, or you may not have enough for a deposit on a new property. If this is the case, consider whether you need to sell at that time, or whether you can make improvements to the property that might help it increase in value.

A mortgage in principle, or mortgage in agreement is something you get in advance of viewing properties. It proves that a lender is willing to give you the mortgage, which shows the seller you’re serious about moving forward, and could actually afford to buy the property. You are not obligated to get your mortgage with the lender who offered you the agreement in principle.

What happens when the fixed rate ends When your mortgage fixed rate term comes to an end (usually between 1-5 years, depending on which mortgage product you chose) you will be placed on SVR – the Standard Variable Rate. This is often more expensive and your lender can change their SVR at any time. The good news is that you can remortgage at this point – lenders often benefit from people not wanting to go through the hassle of remortgaging and finding another deal every few years. Remortgaging simply means you are transferring your mortgage to a new deal. This could be with the same lender,

Positive outlook WILL THEPROPERTY MARKET CONTINUE TO PROSPER IN 2022? WE ASKED ANDREW MILLS OF HUNTERS ESTATE AGENTS. he property market performed particularly well during 2021, with price increased across the board. Recent data released by Dataloft Inform Market Analytics shows that the Yorkshire and Humber region performed particularly well, with an average increase of nine per cent. But how does this translate closer to home? Hunters Estate and Letting agents at Sheffield Hunters Bar sits at the hub of one of the city’s most vibrant areas, Ecclesall Road. Small and friendly, they offer lots of expertise in sales and lettings in the local area, including the city centre. South-west Sheffield and north Derbyshire, areas that benefit from good schools, parks and local amenities as well as excellent public transport links and access to beautiful countryside in the nearby Peak District, continue to proved popular and the postcodes S10, S11 and S17 have all echoed this increase in property prices that we have seen regionally and nationally. Take S10 for example, they have seen an increase in prices of 6.3 per cent with the average cost of a home in the area coming out at £297,097. S17 has seen an increase of 10.5 per cent with an average price of £365,449 whilst S11 has seen the biggest growth - 15.2 per cent - with prices averaging out at £324,474. And it’s not just house sales that have performed particularly well, lettings are on the increase too. Using the same postcodes as a benchmark, average rents have grown by 16 per cent in S10, 5.4 per cent in S11 and 6.5 per cent in S17. This is all good news for those looking to move this year and Andrew Mills, who heads up Hunters Estate and Letting agents, is equally positive about the year ahead. “Already we are seeing signs that this trend is set to continue,” he said. “In fact, we have been inundated with requests over the Christmas period and that’s after the busiest December I have experienced in 14 years. “Extended periods at home has meant people have really considered their surroundings and been spurred into action, whether they want more

RightMove has reported a 40 per cent increase in activity on their portal over the Christmas period compared to the previous year and we have already seen this interest turned into enquiries.” “We effectively sell properties ranging from one-bedroom investment

Our database of active buyers is comprehensive and eclectic and is optimised to suit a huge range of property,” added Andrew. “Whether you’re a property seller, landlord, buyer or tenant, our Sheffield Hunters Bar office is ideally located and

staffed to suit your needs. Our unique account management service ensures all our clients have one expert point of contact, producing streamlined communication, informed advice and an unparalleled accompanied viewing service resulting in the very best prices.” Whether you’re buying, selling or renting, it’s important to look for an agent who can provide you with everything you need. Hunters is an estate agency that has a track record of customer satisfaction; it currently has a 96 per cent rating meaning customers have complete confidence in the service they receive. For them, focusing on a customer’s overall level of happiness is essential. After all, if an agent was good at pricing property but poor at listing properties, the customer wouldn’t be too impressed with the service. Any property transaction requires a lot of aspects to come together, so the best estate agent for the role is one who combines these elements in one comprehensive package. The Hunters office at Hunters Bar is open for all enquiries and is fully cooperating with government guidelines. “It goes without saying that the safety of our staff and you, our customers remains our priority during this period,” said

Andrew. “The housing market is open, and we want you to be confident, whether buying, selling, letting or renting, you are receiving the best, safe, service possible.” Andrew is supported by a team of five who have all undertaken Hunters’ National Qualification - their very own NAEA and ARLA-endorsed estate agency qualification - in either sales or

lettings, which means they’re well placed to help you with any aspect of the market. Give them a call on 0114 267 2080 to see how they can help you. Hunters Estate and Letting Agents Dega House, 546 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8AQ Tel: 0114 267 2080 www.hunters.com

ewly-opened on Townhead Road in Dore, Dales & Peaks is an independent, family-owned estate agency launched by Sarah and John Currey in 2006. This new office joins existing locations in Chesterfield and Matlock and serves this south-west corner of the city as well as the Peak District. Sarah and John’s aim was, and still is, to offer a personal level of service expected by a family-owned business, alongside a professional approach backed up by years of experience within the property and finance sector. Dales & Peaks started out as a letting agent and quickly became one of the leading agents locally, representing some of Chesterfield’s most iconic developments, such as Bradbury Place, Belmont Park and Piccadilly Heights. Son Tom joined the business in 2016 to develop the sales division, rebrand the company and raise their game on marketing and exposure. With a modern approach to marketing and a strong eye on the company’s personal and professional ethos, sales are growing drastically. Dales & Peaks was the first estate agent in the north to introduce 3D tours as well as professional photography as standard, although the latter has become more common across the industry. Tom oversaw a big move into social media – you’ll find them on Facebook and Instagram – which helped to enhance their services even further. The family business consistently achieves 99.96 per cent of asking price

on sales and holds the number one spot for property views locally on portals like Rightmove and Zoopla. Tom will be heading up the new Dore office alongside Debbie Seymour, who has been with Dales & Peaks since 2010, and Holly Parker. “We’d been wanting to move into Sheffield and Dore is one of those areas you would like to be,” said Tom. “It’s close proximity to the centre of Sheffield, as well as the Peak District, makes it a very attractive area and we feel it sits well with our brand. “As an independent, family-owned business we have the capacity to look after everyone individually and offer a real personal service. We can handle the whole process from start to finish.” Last year proved to be a very good year for the property industry, with this corner of south-west Sheffield performing particularly well, something Tom and his team hope to capitalise on. "Buoyant markets in both 2020 and 2021 have created strong momentum going into 2022," added Tom. "Sellers seem understanding that they have to put themselves in the best possible position to be able to proceed on their dream home when it comes available and buyers seems willing to wait for the right property, often with strong competition. “We’d advise anyone looking to move that they are in a position to proceed as quickly as possible.” The Dales & Peaks Dore office is open now – pop in and let them help you find your perfect property.

Wear it again IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE IDEA OF YOUR WEDDING DRESS BEING STUCK IN A BOX, UPCYCLING CAN GIVE IT A WHOLE NEW LEASE OF LIFE. MARIA ILIFFE LOOKS AT SENTIMENTAL IDEAS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER. edding dresses remain one of the only garments made with the intention of being worn only once, yet they are always expensive. Showing off your beautiful and pricey gown for just one day and leaving it in box forever more seems like a massive waste, particularly when sustainability and cutting down on waste had become ever more important. It explains why many brides are now looking to ‘upcycle’ their dresses, turning them into something new or into different items for memorable keepsakes. This allows the dress to live on, breathing new life into it and spreading the memory. Not only does this give wedding dresses a new purpose but does so sustainably. Single use fashion items, such as wedding dresses, are some of the biggest contributors to the negative environmental impact caused by the

fashion industry. With people increasingly realising the need for sustainable fashion and environmentally friendly solutions to the problems we’ve caused, upcycling is in! Turning old garments into something new is becoming more popular. Even celebrities are taking notice: Emma Watson was pictured on the green carpet in an

upcycled piece created by designer Harris Reed out of donated wedding dresses from Oxfam. Of course, donating or selling your dress are great options too, but if you’d like to keep the memory and spread the sentiment into different items, we’ve collected ten of the best ways to do so. There are many different reasons why someone might want to upcycle their wedding dress, and there are even more options for how they can do so. Including presents, blankets, keepsakes, accessories and a whole dress transformation, we’ve gathered the easiest and most sentimental ideas for you to consider.

Add a touch of lace

Work of art

To embellish your household décor or add some decoration to items you may have already made, your wedding dress lace is perfect. Cutting around the lace or using lace edges / tuile gives you gorgeous additions to any piece. Alternatively, if you have experience in sewing, the lace can be sewn together or added to a piece of fabric and made into a new item entirely. Headbands and necklaces are very easy to make out of lace, simply fixing lace to a band for a statement head piece or adding a fastening to a section of lace to make a choker. This will match perfectly with the stunning cocktail or evening dress you may have already turned your wedding dress into.

One easy way to create truly beautiful art out of your dress, is by framing a piece of fabric/dress section. Resulting in a very sentimental piece, you can even stitch (or pay for a professional to stitch) your initials and date on the framed dress section. On a grander and more expensive scale, you could frame your whole gown. Turning your entire dress into a bigger art installation would create a statement piece in any house. There are a select few companies specialising in framing your dress, The Beautiful Frame Company for example, where it can be preserved professionally and very impressively, however you could buy a frame and glass, doing so yourself for much cheaper.

Confetti Fabric repurposed With any spare pieces of your dress that are too small to create a new idea, you can turn them into a new length of fabric. Placing all the sections next to one another, with the edges overlapping, you can sew over them to create a patchwork fabric, with all the old sentiment but a new purpose. There are tutorials online to help explain how this works and give examples for inspiration. The beauty of this is how unique the fabric will be; you can arrange the scraps and sew them however you desire and of course they’re taken from your dress, making it completely personal. After, you can make anything from this fabric, perhaps something listed here or for another project you have on the go. Using all the dress, including the waste, means the process is closed loop and completely sustainable/environmentally friendly.

Dreamy duvet Same but different One of the best ways to use the whole dress and create a re-useable piece, would be to turn your dress into another. Seen by many brides over the years, making simple alterations can easily transform the piece into a cocktail dress or evening gown. Dying is the most effective way, getting the correct dyes (preferably sustainable) and adding your dress to the mixture always results in a completely unique and almost unrecognisable piece. However, many wedding dresses are so glamorous that even with dye, they still appear bridal; with these it’s best to shorten the dress (using the spare fabric for one of our other ideas). Additionally, cutting off the sleeves or removing some decoration helps to simplify the dress. Adding a belt and some accessories also allows for a more evening/cocktail look. Keeping the structure and sentiment, you have a whole new piece allowing you to get more wear out of your special dress.

Small and beautiful Depending on your sewing skills, you may want to leave this idea for a business/sewer; but regardless of how you get there, turning your dress into a mini dress/christening gown, is beautiful idea for your children or grandchildren. Many brides have followed this path, creating a smaller version or new design out of their wedding dress material, it makes a very sentimental gift and helps you upcycle your gown. If you feel this would be better made through experts, Little Doves online creates some beautiful pieces, or alternatively Infinity Keepsakes have made gorgeous christening dresses alongside other wedding keepsakes. 56 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Turning your wedding dress into a quilt maybe a bigger job than the rest, but will result in such a stunning and personal bed cover. For a simpler idea, you can create a smaller piece for a child in the family, maybe making a beautiful cot sheet. This is easy as you only need to cut a section, hemming for neatness if you desire. However, to make your own bed cover you might need some extra fabric to attach depending on how much space your dress will cover when cut into sections. If you would rather a professional’s touch, many sellers online offer custom, handmade covers/blankets, LoveMoody or Jemdesign567 on Etsy for example.

Wear it well

Creating a pendant requires such a minuscule cutting from your dress that you could still preserve the whole piece and never know you’d taken a section. However, as small as it is, this makes a truly beautiful piece of jewellery out of your dress. Cutting a section of fabric or lace and adding it to a pendant is all it takes. Purchase or use an existing empty pendant with a glass front and chain and use clear adhesive (preferably for fabric), to keep it in place. The same method applies for earrings and cufflinks if you wish to make them to match, preserving your dress forever in gorgeous jewellery. Sellers on Etsy can make these for you if you would prefer; CeciLeibovitz and TreeTownPaper create some stunning pieces.

Covering a photo album is one of the simplest ideas, requiring only glue, scissors and an album. Wedding photos allow the magical memories to live on, capturing you and all your family members at their happiest, the images taken will be cherished forever. So, why not use some spare fabric from your dress to either cover a new album, potentially as a gift, or add sentiment to your current album. As you chose your dress and fabric, of course the piece was beautiful, when adding a section to a book, it in turn will look beautiful, with minimal effort.

Cuddly toys As a wedding dress already holds such sentiment, using sections to make a memory bear or bunny for loved one, makes a very thoughtful gift and allows your dress to live on. If you’re planning on doing this yourself, you can use a small piece of fabric and some lace/elastic to make a mini dress for a teddy. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can make the teddy out of the dress fabric, giving it a soft or lacy body full of memories. Alternatively, if you would like a more professional gift, maybe for your child or grandchild, some online companies can create beautiful and personal teddies out of your dress, or make a small version of your dress to add to a teddy. HandmadeByHenri or ThreadPaperStudio both sell these beautiful custom pieces on Etsy, providing a completely unique and personalised gift.

Bags of style One simple way to get as much use out of your dress is by using the fabric to make other items. Creating a purse, curtains, pillows, tote bags, presents or other household items can be a very simple and completely sustainable way to give new life to your beautiful dress. Purses and tote bags can be made easily, following online patterns and could make a sentimental matching gifts for your maid of honour or bridesmaids. Pillows and cushions are also just as simple to make, cutting shapes cut of the fabric with the edges stitched, sometimes even glued. As your dress fabric is already gorgeous, using it to make these pieces means they’ll easily look good and bring gorgeous sentiment. The option to embellish is there and patterns/tutorials can be found online for more guidance, alongside examples for inspiration.

What’s your background?

The new premises on Hickmott Road

We caught up with the artisan to find out more. Tell us about Gilt Patisserie?

Gilt is a modern boutique patisserie that specialises in European style products with a French vibe. We product high quality, fresh produce on a daily basis using ingredients from all over the world. We are passionate about the art of

Twenty years or so ago I went to Castle College where I did three-year diploma under Mick Burk and his team. I then worked with some of Sheffield’s better restaurants before moving down to London to work for Yotam Ottolenghi for three years where I worked my way up to one of his head pastry chefs. I trained in Barcelona, France and under William Curley before returning to London to open Nopi with the Ottolenghi team. After four years I moved to Sydney where I worked in some of the best bakeries and patisseries including a senior role with Adriano Zumbo. I returned to Sheffield dying to do something for myself and started 4 Eyes Patisserie in my parent’s garage.

After two years I decided that wholesale wasn’t what I wanted to do so I left to open Gilt Patisserie on Abbeydale Road.

Rob Wainwright with his mum, Christine

Where do you get your inspiration?

It so easy to get ideas and recipes these days with social media and the internet. Books are coming out every month so ideas flow. The hard thing is sticking to what you believe in and not be too easily distracted what others are doing. I always like to try and do something different to push myself to try new flavours and keep the menu interesting. A lot of how I am in the kitchen and how I run Gilt is inspired from the chefs I’ve worked under in the past. The way I decorate, the flavours I like, it’s all from 15+ years of learning from good chefs in kitchens. How long does it take to perfect the art?

I’m always learning new things about the job with new ideas and trends evolving all the time. For me the main thing is there is nowhere to hide. You can’t just blag it and hope for the best. It’s a science! The more you know about how things might react the easier it becomes. There are so many different factors that can change in a day that will affect the final product so consistency is a big must. I’m 20 years in and there is so much more to learn. The deeper you get in to it the more consistent you become and the better the product will be. Finesse helps also. What makes Gilt Patisserie special?

We try and make the whole experience special so that before you have even tasted the cakes you have left the shop with a smile on your face. Beyond the looks there are different mouth feels, textures and flavour combinations. The high-end produce we use, the passion and knowledge that goes in to them makes them more special. Also, I think people relate then to memories of being elsewhere in the world remembering special times. What’s your favourite patisserie to make?

My favourite section in the kitchen has to be the Viennoiserie (croissants, brioche) section. Laminating dough is one you have to get right – with temperature and rolling, resting and shaping, it’s not right up until the cooking process that you realise you

missed the sugar out. If you don’t focus on it, it can be a nightmare, which makes it more exciting. Fortunately, I get to taste everything in the shop regularly. I think what I like probably shows in the items I put in the shop. I like sour, tangy, sharp things and if you know gilt, you’ll know passion fruit is often on. Hazelnut I’m a sucker for.

We have always offered the option for large celebration cakes on the version of the current range at the time. We are happy to offer larger events inducing weddings, birthday and any other special occasions. We get asked to do macaron towers, large display wedding cakes, individual cakes for weddings, confectionery for wedding favours. I’m always happy to discuss options.

In Westside this month, we have our Confetti wedding special. Do you cater for special occasions?

What are your future plans?

My plans are to hit it hard this year, take some staff on, open more often and bring back the confectionery section to full power along with pushing the coffee and retail section. Gilt en Route, our Sunday brunch delivery pack will reappear twice a month as of February. We would also like to get involved in local events around the city to help increase the brand name. PROMOTION

A question of price IN THE FINAL PART OF OUR SERIES EXPLORING NATURAL AND LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS, PA JEWELLERY CONSIDER VALUE. ab-grown diamonds cost less than their natural equivalents. Comparing two stones of the same quality and size, the lab-grown option costs less. The difference is greater when comparing finer grade stones, since with natural diamonds finer material is rarer and demands a higher price. Although labgrown diamonds are also more expensive in higher grades, they increase less, widening the gap. Natural diamond prices are driven by the finite nature of the supply and cost of production. As mines get older and become deeper, the cost of recovering the diamonds increases while yields diminish. Eventually mines close because they are no longer viable: continued supply relies on new mines being discovered to fill the gaps left by depleted sources. All this means prices have generally increased over time. With lab-grown diamonds, the initial costs of production are high with a huge investment in infrastructure required, although over time this cost is covered. Additionally, the industry is rapidly developing, and techniques are becoming more efficient, decreasing costs. We cannot predict the future but have experience with other man-made gem products: when new to the market, synthetic moissanite and cubic zirconia had high prices that decreased over time. The complexity of producing lab-grown diamonds means they will probably never be ‘cheap’, but we are already seeing them follow the trend. As with all comparisons it is important judge overall value rather

L

64 www.sheffieldvibe.com

than just price. Lab-grown diamonds are undeniably less expensive, but this does not necessarily mean better value. They are so new to the market that it is difficult to judge. We would never recommend jewellery or diamonds as an investment. Tax, high retail running costs and transition from new to second-hand mean you make a loss when selling. However, natural diamonds have an established value and second-hand market, and we are yet to see this with lab-grown stones. We also appreciate that, although an insurance valuation only represents the amount it would cost to replace the item, customers expect their diamond jewellery to increase in value over time. With lab-grown diamonds, the market is rapidly developing, and big brands are investing heavily in their lab-grown offerings, driving consumer awareness up and prices down. While we may feel comfortable paying a premium for the latest mobile phone, accepting that it will be obsolete within months, jewellery is different. It is not an everyday purchase or one we anticipate upgrading each year. Lab-grown diamonds give you a lower price for comparable size and quality but whether this constitutes better value remains to be seen and may depend on personal expectations in addition to the way the market develops. It’s all about individuality very year we see new bridal trends exploding into weddings across the country, whether it be dress styles, table décor or colour palettes. With inspiration from the fashion industry, themes seen on the runway filter into weddings and bring trends for brides to adopt and re-work. With major emphasis in 2022 on individuality, weddings are predicted to become more unique and personal, in both style and design. Bridesmaid dresses were one of the first wedding elements to show individual style and creativity. In colour, style and fabric, 2022’s trends will leave you looking like the best version of yourself, instead of being one in a group dressed identically and traditionally.

E

Mix not Match Bringing your bridesmaid’s sense of identity into their dresses could be the key to a beautifully personal wedding. Seen for years but trending now for 2022/2023 weddings, mix and match dresses are in. Giving your bridesmaids freedom to find their own dress, allows them to feel their most comfortable and confident to support you on your special day. However, the trick to styling the different dresses is cohesion. Following a colour palette is strongly advised to ensure your bridesmaids match and using one colour or shades of one colour would work even better. Alternatively, the dresses would remain a beautiful variation if they were similar styles but with different necklines or length. However much freedom you choose to give your bridesmaids, remember that having one thing in common (colour, neckline, style or length) will tie the dresses beautifully and bring order to your potential mix and match madness.

Bold is Better 2022 epitomises colour, vibrancy and life! After years of Covid negativity and neutral trends resembling our boredom, loud is back.

Pantone was one of the first to announce their colour of the year:Very Peri. The beautiful purple tone is welcomed to this year’s colour palette, alongside moody blues and seasonal greens. Already being styled in or purple... homes and wardrobes, these bold colours are soon to be Or something individual brought to bridal. The perfect colour options for bridesmaid dresses – shades of green – will look gorgeous for mix and match dresses, and if they’re sustainable, even better as the green will resemble this and tie in beautifully. Shades of blue and purple will match well together or can be brought in separately as block colour dresses that contrast the typical white/cream bridal wedding dresses. Regardless of which bold colours you chose to incorporate, if any, the option of joining this vibrant trend is there for inspiration.

Perfect Prints Unsurprisingly, matching this year’s wave of creativity, prints have made a bridal comeback. With the fashion trend of individuality inspiring new prints and styles for a less basic and played out look, weddings are seeing the same pattern. Prints are being used to give a new and unique look for the bridal party, contrasting gorgeously with simple wedding dresses. They can be mixed and matched as suggested above with a colour palette to avoid clashing, or

Go green...

bridesmaid dresses can use the same print with different styles for inclusivity (with different fits catering to different body shapes).

Stop the Stereotypical With the fashion industry finally moving further and further away from stereotypical styles, fits and gendered clothing, women have more freedom in the styles they can wear. Of course, we have always had the option of wearing any clothes (regardless of the gender they were designed for) but it’s hard to feel confident in outfits stereotyped for someone else. Now the world is becoming more progressive, society is helping women feel free in their choice of fit / style, allowing us to move away from the typical tight dress. The perfect example of this is seen in bridesmaids outfits; with the rise in searches for bridal jumpsuits and suits, it’s seeming finally more acceptable to feel comfortable in something other than a dress. www.sheffieldvibe.com 75

Exhibition Exhibition Where We Live Until 5 June Millennium Gallery www.museums-sheffield.org.uk Presenting five locations across England, including the city’s Park Hill housing estate, Where We Live interrogates our social landscape at a time of profound political and social change. The exhibition brings together paintings by Sheffield’s own Mandy Payne, alongside 82 www.sheffieldvibe.com

work by Trevor Burgess, Jonathan Hooper, Narbi Price and Judith Tucker. Each series of paintings offers the viewer multiple perspectives on the notion of home and our sense of place. Tensions in the images between legacies of the past, the reality of the present and often conflicting visions of the future are layered with poetic texts foregrounding the voices of the residents. Each artist raises acute questions of how England’s landscape and architecture is layered over potent legacies of the past, and reveals conflicted visions of the present and the future. In the wake of a pandemic that

confined us to our homes, it questions what the idea of home looks and feels like in the midst of multiple displacements and disorientating political, social and environmental change. In doing so, the exhibition foregrounds the voices of the communities who inhabit the depicted locations, speaking through texts, poetry, podcasts, digital and live discourse about Where We Live. The exhibition aims to demonstrate how the practice of making paintings in series over an extended period allows the artist to examine the multiple facets and topographies of a place.

EATING OUT

What’s not to like? SAM PEGG TAKES A VISIT TO THE EVEREST RESTAURANT ON CHESTERFIELD ROAD he Everest Restaurant, located on Chesterfield Road, offers an appealing dining experience with exceptional service and flavoursome food. It’s a restaurant with a passion and love for the dishes they serve. Within the first second of entering, we were greeted with such joy and happiness by a proud owner and his staff excited to host us for a lovely meal. We were seated in a booth and surrounded by an authentic atmosphere with music to accompany the evening playing throughout. It felt like a place that you could be yourself, to go and relax and enjoy good food. We were talked through the menu by owner Nasir and it was instantly clear that he was enthusiastic when it comes to the quality of the food. Recommendations were given for all courses and the selection of dishes and drinks was generous. My dining companion opted for a pint of Cobra on draught and I had a Disaronno and coke. For our sundries we went for poppadoms (£0.70) with the pickle tray - we were surprised at how crisp and buttery the poppadoms were. We’d even go as far to say they were some of the best we had tasted. For starters we ordered Karahi Tikka

T

90 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Chicken (£4.50) and Garlic Prawns (£4.50), which arrived beautifully presented and still sizzling. The flavours married together beautifully and they were incredibly fresh. We had the honour of talking to the head chef who had worked there for ten years and the joy and passion shone through and is evident through his cooking. The level of spice for both starters was perfect and the salad at the side of the garlic prawns was nice and fresh. It is worth adding that the service was impeccable throughout the time spent at Everest. The waiters went out of their way to ensure we had a wholesome time and made sure to check to see if we needed anything at all. They were attentive and friendly which made the experience all the better. Time for the main course - you can imagine our excitement! We ordered a Shahi Chicken (£8.50 and the Chefs Recommendation on the menu) and a standard Chicken Korma (£9.50).There is a vast selection of main dishes with Tandori Temptations, Balti Dishes,Tikka Massala Dishes, Karahi Dishes, English Dishes,Traditional Curries and Biryani Dishes. Our mains arrived along with our Onion Fried Rice (£3) and our Keema Naan (£3.30) and we couldn’t wait to

tuck in. After every mouthful we found ourselves reminded of the fact that it was bound to be delicious after being open for 43 years. The food was refreshing and authentic and we would highly recommend popping over to enjoy a meal for yourself. After a tough year, Nasir longs to see his beloved restaurant filling up again and it’s tough to see restaurants falling short of customers. For dessert I decided to have the Cookies and Cream ice cream (£4.50) and although desserts are not a speciality at the majority of Indian Restaurants, Everest came through and it was delicious. What’s not to like? Delicious food, great service and a passion for their restaurant and customers. EATING OUT

A step to special THE DEVONSHIRE ARMS AT PILSLEY IS A COSY COUNTRY PUB WITH A TOUCH OF CLASS, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. f you enjoy a winter walk, they don’t come much better than those around the Chatsworth Estate. With woodlands, moorlands and more, there’s plenty to satisfy all types of walkers. And if you like to finish in a cosy pub, well, you’re spoilt for choice. The village of Pilsley is just a couple of miles from Chatsworth and as well as being home to its farm shop, is also home to the Devonshire Arms, which is owned and run by the estate. The Devonshire, like other buildings in the village, is built from local sandstone and offers everything you would expect from a country pub - delicious food, quality ales and a warm welcome. It has 13 bedrooms too, should you wish to extend your stay after lunch or dinner. In the daytime it’s popular with walkers and visitors to the area - you can call in for hearty soups, burgers and fish and chips - but in the evening, with the open fire blazing and the lights turned down a bit lower, it becomes altogether more special. The food is a big step up from what you would call traditional ‘pub grub’ and his menu includes dishes including goats cheese pannacotta, buttered plaice and roasted cauliflower.

I

92 www.sheffieldvibe.com

There’s a good, varied wine list to complement the food too. I started with a real winter warmer, roasted butternut squash soup (£8) served with parmesan-topped croutons, pumpkin seeds and a drizzle of oil. The soup was deliciously smooth and I particularly liked the croutons which were lovely and crisp and topped with plentiful grated cheese. My wife opted for the fresh-tasting sea bass, pomegranate, cauliflower and peanut (£10). Main courses continued the high standards, with my pan roasted Atlantic cod (£22) just nudging ahead of the rump and cheek of Derbyshire beef (£22.50) in the popularity stakes. Served with smoked mussels. brussel sprouts and crispy kale, the fish was perfectly cooked and packed with flavour, a real hearty dish. My wife was full of praise for her beef dish; we really enjoyed the tenderness and intense flavour of the cheek and the chips, served in a separate dish, were excellent too. Desserts were perhaps an indulgence too far - portion sizes at the Devonshire are generous - but I’m glad I tried the rice pudding, plum, stem ginger and

vanilla (£8). Again, a real warming dish, the undertones of ginger gave it a real spiciness, offset by a a cool ice cream and the richness of the plum - it was delicious. My wife’s praline parfait, mascarpone, cherry and coffee (£8) was equally indulgent and the perfect way to finish our excellent meal. We had glasses of Chamuyo Argentinian malice (£11) and Fentimans ginger ale (£1.80) to complement our food. The Devonshire Arms is a country pub with real class and the perfect place to stop off if you’re in the area. Although after all the food, we could probably do with that walk afterwards rather than before. The Devonshire Arms High Street, Pilsley, Bakewell, DE45 1UL Tel: 01246 565405 devonshirehotels.co.uk

IN BRIEF

An immersive hot yoga experience Hotopd Yoga is opening in the centre of Sheffield and to celebrate the launch, founder Suzanne will be hosting a series of complimentary taster classes on 12 February. Furnival Square’s Hotpod Yoga is a one of a kind experience that caters to all levels from beginners to longtime practitioners through its adaptable vinyasa-based flow. Beyond yoga, it is a multi-sensory affair and a true escape from the chaos that is life. As soon as you enter, you feel transported to another realm with a low purple hue, rhythmic beats, aromatic scents and the pièce de resistance… the 37-degree heat. It’s a true oasis in the heart of the city, and everyone is welcome. Following the free classes for the opening, an intro offer of two weeks of unlimited classes for £15 will be available. Anyone that falls in love with the post-class ‘Hotpod feeling’ will then be able to choose from a range of attendance options to suit them - including a single class for £12, a 5class pass for £50 and unlimited yoga for £70 a month. Volunteering at St Luke’s – it’s like a warm hug says Kemi Kemi Dina is encouraging people to join her and discover the ‘warm hug’ of being a St Luke’s Hospice retail volunteer. Kemi volunteers at the St Luke’s City Road shop as part of the NHS Project Choice scheme. Project Choice is a Specialist Post-16 College providing work experience as well as a supported internship programme that helps young adults between the ages of 16 and 24 with disabilities, learning disabilities, difficulties and/or Autism gain work experience and improve employability and independence skills. Kemi came to the project in 2019 and has been part of the St Luke’s team as part of a 12-week placement at the busy City Road shop at Manor Top, volunteering on the shop floor and on the till. “The people are just so nice and the way they work with you, there’s something about it that makes you smile and made me glad that I decided to take on the internship programme,” she said. “It gives you a feeling of warmth like a warm hug and everybody is literally the nicest people I have ever worked for – they are so helpful and supportive.” To find out more about St Luke’s Hospice volunteering opportunities visitstlukeshospice.org.uk/volunteer/aboutvolunteering 94 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Denise raises £1,000 in memory of Gary’s 15 beautiful days Denise Wright has seen four closest members of her family, including husband Gary, spend their final days at St Luke’s Hospice. That was why she was determined to raise money for the charity in its 50th anniversary year, giving something back in recognition of all the support her family has received. And when friends at Sheffield’s BXF Gym in Penistone Road joined her for a series of eight high impact fitness sessions in just six days, they raised £1,000. “My husband Gary was only 58 when he died at St Luke’s and so were my sister Jackie and my brothers-in-law Joe and David,” Denise explained. “I know it might sound strange but we call it the 58 Club because that’s the age they all were they passed away as a result of cancer. “Gary was suffering from Stage 4 cancer which had spread through most of his body and the last 15 days of his life were in St Luke’s - and all I can say is that the support we received was excellent. It wasn’t only Gary they cared for - they allowed me to move in and stay with him and our children Daniel and Lauren were able to be with us for two night when we got near the end.”

BUSINESS

Rising star shines bright

Mark of excellence Sheffield’s property law specialist firm, Mason Thomas Law has secured membership to the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme - the mark of excellence for the home buying process. Mason Thomas Law underwent rigorous assessment by the Law Society in order to secure CQS status, which marks the firm out as meeting high standards in the residential conveyancing process. Having the industry-recognised CQS standard assures home buyers that they will receive a reliable, efficient service from Mason Thomas Law. Delighted to secure CQS status, Cathy Thomas, Director and Solicitor at Mason Thomas Law, said: “Having the industry-recognised CQS accreditation proves our commitment to quality, something I and the team have been focused on since the practice was established in 2019.” The CQS scheme requires practices to undergo a strict assessment, compulsory training, self-reporting, random audits and annual reviews in order to maintain CQS status. It is open only to members of the Law Society who meet the demanding standards set by the scheme and has the support of the Council of Mortgage Lenders, the Building Societies Association, Legal Ombudsman and the Association of British Insurers.

£500k future business investment Designer Contracts, the UK’s largest flooring contractor, starts 2022 with the news it has just completed a round of pandemic-busting spending. The Chesterfield based company, which has successfully traded throughout the coronavirus crisis, has invested £500K in the future of the business with additional racking at its national distribution centre in Kettering; and upgrading the company’s IT systems. Said MD Peter Kelsey: “Our strategy has always been to invest heavily in significant stockholding levels – and given current supply issues, this has never been more important. It gives customers the reassurance of knowing that whatever else they might struggle to source, flooring needn’t be one of them.”

A talented young solicitor from Sheffield’s Taylor&Emmet LLP has received national industry recognition for his skills and ability in the probate sector. Oliver Simpson was crowned Young Practitioner of the Year at the British Wills and Probate Awards 2021, whilst the firm was also highly commended in the Private Client category. The Young Practitioner award recognises exceptional individuals, under the age of 35, who show involvement and development in their area of practice, a flair for innovation and initiative in challenging situations. Oliver, a former Taylor&Emmet trainee, collected his accolade in person at a special awards ceremony, held at the Grand Hotel in Birmingham. He was praised by the independent judging panel for his “thoughtful, effective approach to solutions on cases, with great client feedback.” In the Private Client category, the probate team was commended for its level of expertise and willingness to go “above and beyond to provide exceptional client service.”

Have your say... A consultation on the future of Sheffield city centre is now open, inviting people to share their views on how the city centre should be shaped in the future to adapt and thrive following the challenges of the pandemic. A new vision for the development of the city centre sets out the diverse role it plays as a hub of commerce and growth in the city, centre for shopping, leisure, and nightlife, as well as home to thousands of people. The five-week consultation sets out our ambitions for the city centre over the next 20 years, focusing on key areas such as housing, regeneration, public transport, and green spaces. Development work is already underway to transform much of the city centre, including the £470million Heart of the City scheme, as well as funding secured to revitalise the high street and Castlegate through the Future High Streets Fund and the council’s recent successful bid to the Levelling Up Fund. The city centre vision looks ahead to how city centre spaces can be best utilised to meet the needs of Sheffielders, including plans to create five new distinctive neighbourhoods with high quality, sustainable housing in Neepsend, Wicker Riverside, Castlegate, the Moor and Furnace Hill. More than 20,000 new homes would be created, relieving pressure on greenfield sites, and helping to meet housing demands for Sheffield’s growing population. The consultation will also seek opinions on other important areas, including the ‘spine’ of the city centre, which runs from Castlegate to the Moor, plans for key areas such as Fargate and options for the future of the former John Lewis store. The feedback provided in this consultation will be used to inform more detailed plans. The consultation will run until Friday 11 February 2022. People can view the plans and provide comments at www.ourcitycentre-shf.com, by emailing info@ourcitycentreshf.com or by calling 0808 196 5105. www.sheffieldvibe.com 95

PROMOTION

I’ve been named as an attorney – what do I have to do? ANNE ROGERS, PARTNER AND HEAD OF GRAYSONS’ PRIVATE CLIENT TEAM, EXPLAINS. What is a lasting power of attorney?

Health and welfare power of attorney

A lasting power of attorney (LPA) is a legal document that allows someone (an attorney) to act on behalf of the donor (the person making the LPA), should they not be able to do so due to lack of capacity or some other reason, or should they no longer wish to do so themselves. There are two types of LPA. Both must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before they can be acted upon.

A health and welfare power of attorney only comes into force when the donor has lost mental capacity. As an attorney, you will need to make decisions relating to issues such as where and with whom the donor should live, who they should have contact with, day to day care, (including diet and dress), medical examination and treatment, access to the donor’s personal information, assessments for and provisions of community care services, social and leisure activities, education or training, personal correspondence and papers and complaints about the donor’s care or treatment. The donor can specify the scope of your power as an attorney and you can only consent to, or refuse, life-sustaining or life-prolonging treatment if the donor has specified it in the LPA. Of course, you will not have the power to demand that the donor is given treatment if medical staff in charge of their care don’t believe it to be necessary.

Property and affairs lasting power of attorney If you are named as an attorney in this type of LPA, you will be able to deal with issues such as bank and other financial accounts, property, benefits, bills, investments, taxes, income or inheritance and making limited gifts on the donor’s behalf. There are strict rules relating to using the donor’s money to give gifts. These relate to: • What constitutes a gift. • When a loan is a gift. • Who you can give gifts to and when. • What happens if you give a gift beyond your authority as an attorney. If you want to give a gift that doesn’t fit within your authority given in the LPA, you must apply to the Court of Protection for permission. You will need to keep accounts, separate to your own, to show how you have dealt with the donor’s finances. You can act upon a property and affairs LPA as soon as it is registered – the donor does not need to have lost capacity. 96 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Are there any specific duties as an attorney? As an attorney, you are under obligation only to act in the best interests of the donor at all times. You must make the relevant decisions yourself. You cannot ask someone else to make them for you,

even if they are a doctor or healthcare worker.Your duties include following the instructions within the LPA, taking note of any preferences specified by the donor, allowing the donor to make their own decisions as far as is possible and helping with those decisions, ensuring that any decisions you make are in the donor’s best interests and respecting the donor’s human and civil rights.

Can you stop being an attorney temporarily? Anne Rogers, partner and head of Graysons’ private client team says: “No, you can’t give up your role as an attorney temporarily. If you wish to stop being an attorney within an LPA, you have to give up that role permanently. Of course, this could leave the person who made you an attorney vulnerable, so you should think carefully before doing this.” You can find out much more about lasting powers of attorney on our website at www.graysons.co.uk.You can also contact one of our private client experts and they will be happy to help you with your duties as an LPA attorney. Contact our private client team at: Tel: 01142 050 366 Facebook: Graysonslaw Twitter: @Graysonslaw Web: www.graysons.co.uk

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN CREATE YOUR OWN FERRARI? RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT THE LATEST ADDITION TO THEIR ‘ONE-OFF’ RANGE AND MORE.

One of a kind The Ferrari BR20, the latest addition to the Prancing Horse’s One-Off series, has been unveiled and joins the most exclusive group in Maranello’s range: unique, absolutely bespoke cars crafted to the specifications of a client and designed as a clear expression of their own unique requirements. The BR20 is a two-seater V12 coupé developed on the GTC4Lusso platform, which in terms of its philosophy and styling approach, cleverly references the magnificent Ferrari coupés of the 1950s and 60s, without the slightest hint of nostalgia. Instead, it pulls off the challenging feat of marrying timeless elegance with muscular sportiness, effortlessly incorporating styling themes typical of some of the most iconic 12cylinders in Ferrari history, including the 410 SA and 500 Superfast. Designed for a longstanding client who was deeply involved in every step of its creation, the Ferrari BR20 represents a true interpretation of the traditional coachbuilder’s art, successfully transforming an existing model in a masterful and unique way taking inspiration from and paying homage to the company’s core values of innovation and passion.

In addition to plug-in hybrid versions, the Astra Sports Tourer will be available with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines. Power ranges from 110PS to 130PS across the petrol and diesel variants. A six-speed gearbox is standard on the petrol and diesel power units, while plugin hybrid variants come standard with Vauxhall’s smooth eight-speed automatic. 98 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Sustainable Skoda

Sleek and compact The Volkswagen Taigo, now open for order, is Volkswagen’s first SUV-coupé, bringing sleek looks, charisma and flexibility to the compact SUV segment. The model starts at £21,960 OTR for the model in Life specification, allied to a 1.0-litre, 95 PS TSI engine and five-speed manual gearbox. The newcomer features the higher seating position and ground clearance of an SUV, while also offering comfort and style. Personalisation is provided via a wide and vibrant range of paint colours, while further customisation is available optionally across various aspects of the interior. Customer demand for high levels of technology and connectivity are met, with wireless App-Connect and wireless smartphone charging, as well as streaming and internet services, all included from Life trim upwards. The Taigo range features four engine and gearbox configurations, with the combination depending on specification.

Four years after its launch, the ŠKODA Karoq has received an update. The update brings sustainable materials, new technology and more efficient engines, from the current EVO generation to the compact SUV. The wider, now hexagonal ŠKODA grille, slimmer headlights as well as tail lights, and aerodynamically optimised alloy wheels with black plastic Aero trim create fresh visual highlights. The new wheels, rear window finlets and a new rear spoiler all improve the car’s aerodynamics while lowering its CO2 emissions. The interior features new upholstery which, as an option, can be made from sustainable materials. New technology – such as full-LED Matrix headlights and an expanded range of assistance systems – also debuts in the range. Five efficient engines from Volkswagen Group’s EVO generation round off the Karoq’s update. Two diesels and three petrol engines deliver power outputs ranging from 110 PS to 190 PS.
