PROMOTION

SUMMER’S HERE – TIME TO THINK ABOUT GETTING A BOILER FROM FLAMES OF SHEFFIELD. lames of Sheffield have helped more than 3,800 customers with their fire, fireplace, stove and central heating needs since they first opened their doors in 2005. “Although both the winter and spring seasons were a very busy time for us in terms of fires, fireplaces, stoves and central heating, as we start to come into summer, it is a great time to look at having any home improvements completed, especially as we have many great offers available in our Sizzling Summer Sale,” commented Director Lee Day. There are great household savings to be made by installing an ‘A’ rated energy efficient central heating boiler, with the average saving being of between £300-£400 per year. A solid fuel stove is also a great way to cut down on gas usage in many homes and, as long as the stove is DEFRA Approved and the

F

correct fuel like seasoned/kiln dried timber or smokeless coal is used, then this again can be a great alternative to heat large areas of a home. Flames of Sheffield are offer a different proposition to the majority of central heating installers as they operate from their Hillsborough Barracks bricks and mortar showroom, are open 7 days a week, are not just a mobile number in a book or on the side of a van, plus they have their consumer credit licence and therefore offer a competitive finance facility. Flames are also an Accredited Installer for the entire Worcester-Bosch range of boilers and therefore offer a minimum 7 Year Parts & Labour Guarantee on all boilers and can even give their customers a 10 Year Guarantee on a selected range of boilers, subject to terms and conditions. They install Combi, Conventional and System Boilers which they also back with a 1 Year Guarantee

on the quality of how it is installed to give their customers extra piece of mind. Having firmly established themselves over the past 12 years as a local destination retailer for anyone looking for a special fire, fireplace, solid fuel stove or central heating boiler/system, they consistently offer customers a range of high quality products, value for money competitive pricing and a huge choice of bespoke ranges, whilst always maintaining their very highly rated standard of customer service. Flames of Sheffield are located on the Upper Mall at Hillsborough Barracks (Morrisons) and FREE parking is available via the Langsett Road or Penistone Road entrances. Opening Hours: Mon – Sat 9.30am till 5pm & Sunday 11am till 3pm Tel: 0114 2313366 Website: www.flamesofsheffield.co.uk

WITH YEARS OF EXPERIENCE BEHIND HER, EMMA CONNELLY IS IDEALLY PLACED TO PROVIDE EXPERT ADVICE AT HER INDEPENDENT ATI MIELE SHOWROOM.

A unique level of service iele is a well-known German manufacturer of high-end domestic appliances, but whilst you would expect their stores to be part of a franchise, the branches in Harrogate and Sheffield are actually independent. ATI Miele in Sheffield was only the second Miele showroom to open in the UK, and being located on Sharrow Vale Road amongst many other independents, it’s in good company. Emma Connelly opened the store in December 2016, after working for Miele for 10 years as a product trainer and then a business manager. She then worked with Dale Adams at the ATI Miele Centre in Harrogate for two years. What makes buying an appliance from ATI Miele in Sheffield so unique, is the personal service and expert advice, which Emma provides. “I only sell Miele and I know their products inside out. Department stores are pressured into selling a range of different brands and that usually means you lose the expertise that comes from working with one range of products for many years. Whether you’re looking for a new washing machine or you’re replacing your entire kitchen, it can be a real challenge to know which products will work best for your lifestyle. I love nothing more than to sit down with our customers over a cup of coffee, talk about what they need and make sure we get the right product for them. I offer an unrivalled after sale service too – customers can call me directly if they need any guidance on getting the best out of their new appliance without having to go through a department store call centre.” What’s more, ATI Miele’s prices are competitive as they track the market on a daily basis to ensure they are in line with the bigger online retailers. The appliances at ATI Miele are interactive,

M

44 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

which means you can test out everything from their vacuum cleaners to their washing machines. Emma is even inviting customers to bring in their washing to take one for a spin. Come and cook a meal in their steam oven or get a bit of ironing done on the Miele Fashion Master! The store’s services also extend to aftercare and you can find all the spare parts and accessories you will need including bags and filters for their vacuum cleaners. Being a premium brand, Miele’s motto is Immer Besser – Forever Better, which is why they confidently promise that their appliances have been tested for 15 to 20 years’ use. And right now, Miele are offering a ten-year warranty (parts, labour and call out) on their WDD030 8KG, 1400 spin washing machine. This machine also comes with £100 cash back until 31 December 2017. Miele is a fourth-generation family business, run by Dr Miele and Dr Zinkann, and Emma strives to emulate the Miele company values in her own showroom. “Nobody likes to feel pressured into buying anything, but particularly when it’s a kitchen product that you need to know will perform to the highest standard for many years to come. Our modern showroom is purpose-built to allow us to display and demonstrate as many products in the vast Miele range as we can – from our coffee machines and Fashion Master ironing boards to our dishwashers and ovens - and we’ve got games and colouring books to keep the kids busy while you browse. “Come and enjoy a cup of tea or a coffee made from a Miele coffee machine. Choosing a new appliance should be enjoyable and stress-free.” The showroom also has fullyworking fitted kitchens with all the

cabinetry supplied by Russell and Hutton based on Ecclesall Road. This means ATI Miele are able to host cookery demonstrations. The next cooking demonstration, supported by Miele, will feature MasterChef finalist SvenHanson Britt and is due to take place this September. Look out for further announcements. Follow ATI Miele Sheffield on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to keep up to date with all their offers and events.

The Scandinavian sauna

A shed-load of choice… TAKE YOUR PERSONAL SPACE INTO THE GREAT OUTDOORS, SAYS PHOEBE SEYMOUR

Sheds are usually associated with summer, but why not create a space you can enjoy all year round? Take a leaf out of our Scandinavian neighbours with an outdoor sauna. Go for the traditional Finnish cabin, with wooden walls for privacy or a modern cube with huge glass windows to take in the gorgeous view of your garden in snow or shine.

tudy, den, man cave… whatever you choose to call it, it seems men have always needed a room of their own to hide away from the hustle and bustle of the house. But in recent years, a new breed of man cave has emerged. An increasingly number of men (and women) are opting for outdoor rooms or sheds. Gone are the days when a shed only contained rusty garden furniture and cobwebs. Thanks to TV shows such as Shed of the Year and George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, a new generation have discovered its endless possibilities. Even David Cameron recently unveiled his luxury £25,000 shepherd hut. So, whether you need a space to pursue a hobby or to simply indulge in some quiet time, here is our round up of some of the best types of ‘man sheds’ around.

Assessing the lie of the land SOME TOP TIPS FROM IRWIN MITCHELL’S ALISON FERNANDES FOR THOSE WHO ARE SPLITTING UP. here seems to be a steady stream of articles in the press at the moment about divorce cases going through the Courts, as well as regular commentary and articles on the separation of the rich and famous. It is therefore easy to pick up views and ideas about what will be relevant and important in divorce cases, whereas the reality and the legal situation is often very different from popular perceptions. What is not highlighted in these press articles is that a good deal of common sense and some good advice is what is really needed when someone faces the often devastating change in their life, which comes with separation and divorce. It is important to pick the right lawyer and the right law firm, which has all of the expertise which you will need. Timing can also be very important. Post Brexit, there were real fears about price per acre of land according to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, who blamed “an overarching sense of uncertainty” linked to the loss of subsidies from the European Union. If you face separation and own or are living on a farm owed by your spouse, it is going to be important to consider such matters and decide when, or indeed if, it is sensible or necessary to divorce now and split up assets now. In addition, it is essential to formulate a plan at an early opportunity with your lawyer, and not assume that the divorce courts will hold back from ordering a sale of your farm or rural property. It is true to say that Judges are reluctant to order a sale of a farm, but if

T

this is the only way to ensure fairness between spouses and is the only way to ensure that both parties end up with what they financially need at the end of the day, the Court will order a sale. It is important to put forward credible plans for both spouses for the time after the sale of the farm which had been purchased during the marriage. On the other hand, judges can be cautious about ordering the sale of rural property where it has been in the family for two or three generations. A well thought through strategic plan will still be required to minimise the chances of a sale of the entire property and carefully thought through

‘Whatever your scenario, obtaining advice at an early stage is going to be worthwhile and help to ensure that you do not lose out.’

decisions will need to be made about what part of a farm could be sold, so as to minimise income loss and tax payable on sale. Whatever your scenario, obtaining advice at an early stage is going to be worthwhile and help to ensure that you do not lose out. Pre and Post Nuptial agreements can also be really important to protect inherited family assets. At Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth we have significant experience in advising in family situations where assets are being passed on, or where family members are in business together, to ensure this is done in the best way possible and ensure the family are protected. This is particularly important where parents are increasingly assisting children to get onto the property ladder, now being dubbed the ‘bank of Mum and Dad’. Separation and divorce is going to represent a significant change to you and your family. Irwin Mitchell has experience and expertise in all forms of family dispute resolution, we offer unrivalled guidance and methods to support you whatever the circumstance, help you plan appropriately and make the right decisions at the right time. STRONG STUFF CHILDREN WHO GO TO INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS DEVELOP MORE MENTAL TOUGHNESS, ACCORDING TO NEW RESEARCH. any parents select an independent school for their children because they believe it will give them the best possible chance of academic achievement... and there are plenty of success stories in our region to back this up, with youngsters receiving outstanding GCSE and A level successes way above national averages. However it isn’t all about exam success. When it comes to turning out well-rounded individuals, capable of dealing with setbacks and open to new challenges, pupils in independent schools also achieve outstanding results. They are controlled, committed, confident and like a challenge, new research from the Independent Schools Council reveals. The quantitative research by leading psychometric test publisher AQR International shows pupils at independent schools have good attainment, wellbeing and behaviour and are more resilient, better at dealing with setbacks and more open to learning as a result. Using a mental toughness model called MTQ48, the study - An Analysis of Mental Toughness at UK Independent Schools included 9,000 pupils of all ages from 58 schools in England and Scotland. This test, which defines mental toughness as the ‘mindset that every person adopts in everything they do' gave an overall score of 4.26, higher than a figure of 3.94 recorded across state schools. Set across four categories – the 4Cs – the highest score was recorded in confidence (4.47), a result also seen in state schools (4.49). While scoring lower, control (4.16), commitment (4.34) and challenge (4.19) were all higher than in state school pupils*, significantly so for commitment and challenge.

M

*Results from 32,000 state school pupils taken from data held by AQR

Control • Life control – I really believe I can do it. I believe that I am in control of much of what determines my ability to do things. • Emotional control – I can manage my emotions and the emotions of others. Commitment • Goal setting – I promise to do it. I like working to goals and will set goals for myself. • Achieving – I'll do what it takes to keep my promises and achieve my goals. Challenge • Risk taking – I will stretch myself and welcome new situations. I am not frightened of new things. • Learning from experience -– even setbacks are opportunities for learning and I will try again if I have not succeeded the first time. Confidence • In abilities – I believe I have the ability to do it, or can acquire the ability. I have less need for validation from others. • Interpersonal confidence – I can influence and engage with others. I can stand my ground if needed. I will ask questions of others. As well as the overall aggregated scores across all participating schools, each will be able to use their individual results to help plan which areas could be focused on more in the future. With a greater spotlight being shone on mental health and wellbeing in schools of all types, the data and intelligence gathered in this study will put schools in an excellent position to

Control Commitment Challenge Confidence Overall mental toughness

be able to focus all work in these areas with greater knowledge, accuracy and detail. Peter Clough, Professor of Applied Psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University, who moderated the process and analysis of the research, said: “This is, I believe, an important piece of work. Participating schools are to be congratulated for contributing to a large-scale study embracing almost 10,000 pupils which seeks to assess and evidence what is happening with the development of what are now recognised as important life skills in schools. “The results are both interesting and valuable. Using the 4Cs mental toughness model, we gain useful insights, as well as signposting where attention could be usefully directed. Importantly, the data is of use to all who are involved in the education and development of young people.” Julie Robinson, General Secretary of the Independent Schools Council, said: “A year after research showed independent schools add significant academic value, it is encouraging to see this is also the case with soft skills and mental toughness. “Whilst the study does not seek to answer exactly why this is so, it does provide useful and meaningful comparisons. Many independent schools will feel that it is the breadth of curriculum, wide-ranging activities outside the classroom and excellent pastoral care which help create resilient and worldly young men and women who are ready for further study and work in adult life.”

Part of something special BEING PART OF MOUNT ST MARY’S COLLEGE IS LIKE BEING PART OF A BIG FAMILY, SAYS HEADMASTER DR NICHOLAS CUDDIHY. r Nicholas Cuddihy has been the headmaster of Mount St Mary’s College since August 2014. “The Mount is so much more to us than a school where we work – it is our home, our family. Of course my work has some challenges but I can’t remember a time in my professional life when I felt so much at home, content and rewarded in my job.” Despite the school being small, with just over 550 students from nursery to sixth form, their results are exceptional. Many of the year groups are now full and admission projects suggest they will reach their capacity of 600 within the year, showing that it’s a sought after school. “We employ 180 people from excellent teachers, managers, administrators, drivers to chefs, domestic and grounds staff making us one of the biggest employers in our area.” “What sets this incredible team apart is

D

their remarkable loyalty and love for the Mount. Although we are a small school, it’s one big Mount family,” added Nicholas. This year the school is celebrating its 175th anniversary since opening in 1842. They are continuing to grow in numbers and the school is enjoying a multitude of successes. They have reached outstanding achievements in sport, music and the arts along with significantly improved, excellent academic results in primary SATS, GCSE and A-level. “As well last year we were delighted to receive two wonderful endorsements from week-long inspections carried out by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. “Successful schools, like happy and successful families have some things in common. There is good communication, good boundaries and they promote healthy morals and values.” He added: “Everyone is encouraged to

show care, respect and compassion for each other and the school always does its best. For me, happiness in a school lies in the relationships. “Most importantly happy families and happy schools, respect and honour their traditions and heritage, which is why reaching our 175th year is so important to us. Hospitality matters to the Mount family and we welcome all our pupils, staff, parents and guests warmly everyday.” The 175th year-long celebrations have already been launched at Mount St Mary’s. Mount 175 175 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE AND CARE AT MOUNT ST MARY’S.

A significant anniversary This year, Mount St Mary’s College in Spinkhill, Derbyshire celebrates its 175th anniversary. An exciting year of events is now underway having been launched at the end of May with a Grand Celebration Week. The events of the year to come will unite the whole Mount family bringing together generations of Old Mountaineers (OMs), current families, staff past and present and people from the wider community. The Grand Celebration Week, which kicked off the celebrations, consisted of no less than nine fantastic events in eight jam-packed days. These included Sports Day at the Mount’s own stadium, a High Fashion and High Tea for 250 ladies, a Children’s Theatre Day, the annual Sports Awards ceremony, an unforgettable Academy Concert and Speech Day, all rounded off in style with a magnificent ball for 600 guests on the historic and beautiful Jesuit Lawn. Already plans are afoot for next year with a Celebration Week and Ball planned to bring the year of events to a fitting finale.

The origins of the College Mount St Mary’s College opened its doors in the small village of Spinkhill near Sheffield in 1842. However, its origins go back much further, to 1620 in fact. At that time Jesuits were teaching, albeit in secret in an era of Catholic persecution, at Stanley Grange near Derby. With the need for secrecy no more, the Jesuits of the area launched a new school for this new era. The College of Mount St Mary was officially opened by Fr Lythgoe, the Jesuit provincial on 17 September 1842. The school is planning a solemn mass of thanksgiving for 17 September 2017, precisely 175 years on from that famous day. 68 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

Parts of the building that now house students at the Mount date back to the 16th and 17th century; the Sodality Chapel is the earliest remaining building. The awe-inspiring Memorial Chapel was built in 1924 to commemorate the Old Mountaineers who had lost their lives during World War I. The Chapel was designed by Adrian Gilbert-Scott, who took for his inspiration from the Duomo in Florence. Each year the whole school community gather on 11 November in a solemn act of prayer and remembrance to honour the many Old Mountaineers who served and fell during the Great War. This year’s memorial service will be even more special.

Barlborough Hall In 1939 the Jesuits decided to open a preparatory school for the Mount at Barlborough Hall. Today, Barlborough Hall is a busy and thriving day school and nursery with 200 girls and boys, aged 3 to 11. The Hall is a stunning Grade I listed country house which was built in 1583-84 for Sir Francis de Rodes. In May 1939 Barlborough Hall welcomed its first pupils, a cohort of 35. Within the year it had been requisitioned by the British Army for use during World War II. The children and staff took up residence at Mount St Mary’s but were reinstated at the prep school after just two terms and in time for the start of the summer term in 1940.

Adventure Awaits Boarding at Mount St Mary's College

Today’s Mount St Mary’s College Mount St Mary’s College in 2017 is a vibrant and growing school. Although much has changed in its remarkable history, the Mount preserves and cherishes its Jesuit identity. Care of the individual and the pursuit of excellence are at the heart of everyday life. Whilst the majority of the students at the school are from the local area, travelling daily from Sheffield, Chesterfield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Mansfield and beyond, many using the fleet of school minibuses. Around 20 per cent of students come from countries around the world. Students come to live alongside the British students from many European countries as well as many from further afield including Mexico, Chile, Fiji, the Middle East, Hong Kong, China and Nigeria to name a few. This creates a diverse, cosmopolitan environment, reflective of the wider world, where students learn to live and work alongside one another, preparing for all that comes next. Sport has been a long-standing area of strength at the Mount. And whilst rugby and hockey remain strong and successful sports, the Mount has moved with the times and offers a broad range of sporting opportunities in athletics, cricket, swimming, fencing, shooting, pentathlon, biathlon, fitness and much more. The investment in facilities and staff means the Mount offers a sports program that ensures that all students are able to access sport throughout their week, whether as a novice or at the elite level that a notable number achieve. The reputation for excellence in Music is well established. Throughout the year the various choirs, individuals and ensembles create highlights for all to enjoy. Over 75 per cent of students at Barlborough Hall play at least one instrument and more than 40 per

Strong connections AS HEAD OF THE JUNIORS AT WESTBOURNE, LISA CANNELL AIMS TO BUILD ON THE SCHOOL’S STRONG REPUTATION. isa Cannell has been at Westbourne School since 2015 as Head of the Junior School. She took this role after being director of professional development and teacher at Tanglin Trust School, a British International School in Singapore. “As soon as I began teaching I knew one day I wanted to become a headteacher. After 11 years of working abroad, I was keen to take on my first headship and relocated back to the UK with my family to join the Westbourne team.” Led by headmaster, Mr John Hicks, Westbourne is a co-educational independent school in Sheffield offering first class education to girls and boys from three to 16. “Westbourne is an academically nonselective school which caters for children of all abilities and talent. Over the last two years

L

we have revitalised our curriculum to ensure that it prepares children for life in the 21st century. Each child is known and their talents are nurtured and developed. The children experience success and this in turn develops their confidence and motivation.” “We’ve introduced a number of new initiatives to support children in their development including mindfulness, yoga and philosophy.” This year, Westbourne has re-launched the house system which encourages children to work together. “Each year the children choose a charity to support. This system enables children to understand where the money goes, how it changes the lives of others giving them a deeper sense of social responsibility.” “I believe it is our responsibility to ensure children are equipped with a toolkit that will

prepare and support them throughout their life. Over the coming year we will be adapting our curriculum to incorporate opportunities for children to engage in enterprise, develop their understanding of finance and taxation along with the political system.” “I want children at Westbourne to understand what it means to be a global citizen by developing a strong connection to the environment and the world we live in. WITH RECORD-BREAKING RESULTS AND FANTASTIC FACILITIES, QUEEN ETHELBURGA’S IS ONE OF THE NORTH’S LEADING INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS.

A centre of excellence ounded in 1912, Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is a day and boarding school with 1500 pupils aged from 5 years to 18 years and from over 40 different countries. Set in 120 acres of beautiful North Yorkshire countryside, the campus has some of the most impressive study, boarding and leisure facilities in the independent school sector. 2016 saw QE celebrate its best ever A level results. Queen Ethelburga’s College was ranked the top day and boarding school in the North of England, according to the Daily Telegraph 2016 League Table for percentage A*/A A levels and equivalent qualifications. It scored 87 per cent, which ranked it top in the north and the second UK day and boarding school overall. The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the Collegiate’s other sixth form school, scored 84 per cent with its percentage of A*/A A levels and equivalent qualifications in the Daily Telegraph table, placing it second in the north and fourth in the list of UK day and boarding schools. Stephen with Riley Steer and Braxton Wood, 2016 national junior disability snooker championships finalist, academy director Steven Mercer, mum Shirley Harrison and academy ambassador Maureen Green

Stephens’ inspiration his father, Ray Harrison

Top of the pots RAY HARRISON IS USING THE POWER OF SNOOKER TO HELP TRANSFORM LIVES, WRITES RACHEL MARTIN. ay Harrison, 1985 Paraplegic World Snooker Champion, was the inspiration behind a ground-breaking Sheffield social enterprise, set up by his son, Stephen Harrison following his death. Inspired by his father’s legacy, Stephen went on to play snooker professionally for twelve years, before becoming a UK and world qualified snooker coach and setting up The Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy in 2007. Fuelled by his passion for the sport and, in particular, for increasing access to the game, The Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy is a non-profit enterprise based in Sheffield providing snooker coaching and competitions for a wide variety of disadvantaged groups. “The focus of our work is with young

offenders, people with physical and learning disabilities or mental health problems and young people and adults not in education, employment or training,” says Stephen. “My father, Ray Harrison, was highly successful at playing this sport and also in promoting snooker to many disabled people. He was in a wheelchair, a victim of polio, but he had learned how to lift and move his body into certain positions which gave him full control of the table. “He was such an inspiration and because of him I know that snooker is not only accessible to people with physical handicaps, but it is also a terrific sport for helping people with weak, concentrative powers. “I train people who find focussing on strategy difficult, helping them learn where to

position the balls and which part of a ball to strike with the cue, and have found that with patience, respect and specialised tuition they can enjoy the sport, follow the rules and learn how to improve their standards.” Since launching the academy, Stephen has gone on to set-up the UK Snooker Awards, a national project aimed at kick-starting snooker at grassroots level, and the enterprise has continued to grow – proving that snooker can help young people, in particular, with complex needs such as autism, Aspergers and ADHD with social skills, numeracy, literacy, concentration, confidence, independence, dexterity, hand-eye coordination, nutrition and employment opportunities “A lot of the children struggle to cope in social situations and can find it daunting

WE’RE ON THE HUNT FOR HEROES Never mind Superman or Wonder Woman... Westside is on the look-out for some real life local heroes. We know there are lots of people out there who dedicate a huge part of their lives to making the world a better place for others. We’re taking about people like John Burkhill,

our very own pram-pushing, wig-wearing, fund-raising legend. He’s the Man with the Pram, who has dedicated his life to raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Quite rightly, John has become an instantly recognisable and widely praised local personality because of his tireless efforts to

‘We want to encourage more and more young people, both boys and girls, to get involved and while we’re focused on growing the enterprise from its grass roots here in Sheffield right now, in the long-term I’d love to see it expand worldwide and snooker be reintroduced into the Paralympics, where it hasn’t been played since 1988.’

HOW TAKING UP A CUE HAS HELPED MY SON COPE WITH AUTISM I’m so grateful that my son James has been able to attend the Stephen Harrison snooker sessions over the last six/seven years. James is a young man on the autistic spectrum and as such, he has difficulties with social communication and interaction. He has a very limited range of unusually strong and narrow interests, so I was surprised and delighted when he first said he wanted to join the snooker club. Over the years, it has helped him develop his social skills by mixing with other young people and he now has another interest - we went to see the World Championships at the Crucible earlier this year and James wants to continue to play snooker as a leisure activity throughout his adult life. Playing snooker has helped James learn about persistence, focus and concentration. Keeping score helps with maths and it has significantly improved his hand-eye co-ordination. Going to snooker on Saturdays was also James’ first experience of spending time away from his family, apart from school, and he even appeared on BBC Look North last year talking about the snooker club. All in all it’s had a big impact on his independence, confidence and maturity. And, in turn, I’ve really appreciated having that time at the weekends to give me a bit of a break. The club has such a lovely atmosphere, it’s a calm environment but full of fun too. The staff are so friendly and encouraging and you feel like you’re part of a big, extended family. This is all down to Stephen. He is such an inspirational man, with a huge passion for the sport and, in particular, for increasing access to the game for people with disabilities. James has since continued to attend the club as a volunteer, helping with various jobs such as cleaning the tables, and this has also had another positive impact - James has been able to include this on his CV when applying for jobs, he can talk about snooker at interviews and Steve has kindly agreed to provide a reference for him. Very recently, James has accepted a part-time job and I firmly believe that attending the snooker sessions were a vital part of this journey. I cannot praise Stephen and the snooker club highly enough for the huge impact it has had on James’ life and on mine too. I am sure other families feel the same. Sheena Mansell

when first join the club. Once they get into it and start making friends though, you see the concentration they channel into the game and just how much their confidence increases and attitudes and lifestyles evolve. We even see children attending the club independently, which is a huge step. “Once members turn eighteen, we also Stephen with offer them the opportunity to become a David Collins, who has been voluntary coach, so that they can continue to attending the play snooker throughout their adult life and Academy pass on their skills to the younger children since the age of nine. who attend – with the hope that this will eventually lead on to securing fulltime work.” In April, the academy staged the fourth National Junior Disability Snooker Championship and Stephen hopes that it will continue to grow across South Yorkshire and eventually take-off worldwide. “We want to encourage more and more young people, both boys and girls, to get involved and while we’re focused on growing the enterprise from its grass roots here in Sheffield right now, in the long-term I’d love to see it expand worldwide and snooker be reinvigorated and reintroduced into the Paralympics, where it hasn’t been played since 1988. “I watched the Paralympics in pride and wonder and to see well trained athletes performing to such incredible standards in spite of their disabilities was truly inspiring. Quick, skilful movements, bordering on the dangerous at times, were exciting to watch and the satisfaction the athletes felt because of their achievements was a joy to see. “With this in mind, I’m asking for support in backing my dream and we’ll be fundraising in the local community as we work to become more sustainable and increase the services we currently offer. “We’d love to hear from you if you have any ideas or would like to get involved. The more people I can find who will support me in this endeavour the greater chance it will have of success.” If you or anyone you know is Stephen with Daniel Barker interested in joining the club or and Josh want to help be the difference Garner and raise funds, contact Stephen Harrison at stephen@snookerskills.com or call 07864046826.

Our annual celebration of the local dining out scene was taken to a new level this year with the involvement of Westside’s media partners My Fathers Heart, who sponsored the event. Robinsons of Stockport were the drinks sponsors. Back to compère for a second year running, Howard was the perfect master of ceremonies, delivering a string of cheeky one-liners as he announced a grand total of 14 award winners. There was a fantastic party atmosphere with plenty of cheering and smiling all round, but the happiest table belonged to the team from Samuel Fox Country Inn in Bradwell, who walked away with both the Best

Runner-up Patrick (right) with Jonathan Coulthard from My Fathers Heart

YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR Dave Cockerill, The Tickled Trout Westside’s media partners My Fathers Heart provided the perfect venue for a MasterChefstyle cook-off between four of the region’s most talented rising stars of the culinary scene, who came together on a Saturday in May to battle it out for the title of Young Chef of the Year. Dave Cockerill from The Tickled Trout in Barlow emerged successfully after a high quality battle with runner-up Patrick White of the Red Lion Bistro at the Peak Edge Hotel, plus Elliott O’Neill from Nonnas and Stephen Delmar from Brocco on the Park. Cooking on the latest state-of-art kitchen equipment in the My Fathers Heart showroom, all four proved they could deliver the goods under pressure as their food was tasted by a panel consisting of Mick Burke, a former tutor at Sheffield Catering College, Westside’s joint managing director John Murphy, Westside reader Natasha Holland and rising TV star Stefan Rose, head chef at Crafthouse and Angelica Leeds.

It was Dave’s signature dish of lemon baked halibut in a gruyere crust with an artichoke purée, Jersey Royal potatoes, samphire, baby leaves, morel mushrooms and seasonal capers with a shallot, halibut and chicken vinegar that wowed the judges above all. Sous chef Dave has worked with Chris Mapp, owner of The Tickled Trout for 18 months. Chris said: “He is a very hardworking and conscientious young man with an abundance of talent and I am glad to have him in my team. Dave knows my simple rules, understands the ingredients, keeps it simple and most importantly makes it taste good.” Dave added, “I’m quite surprised to have won. I thought I did a good dish but I didn’t think it was good enough to win, so this is a great confidence booster. “There was a lot of brilliant competition and it was tough, but well worth it and really enjoyable. I plan on staying at The Tickled Trout for a few more years yet, there is so much left to learn from Chris.” >>>

BEST YOUNG CHEF RUNNER-UP

Patrick White, Red Lion Bar & Bistro Patrick studied at Southport College before moving to Sheffield and now helps create a wide range of delicious dishes from the Red Lion Bar & Bistro’s breakfast, lunch and dinner menus at The Peak Edge Hotel. Patrick said: “I am annoyed I didn’t win, but it was a good way to promote myself and the restaurant. We work hard as a team. “It’s a good award for the local industry and it’s a nice chance for us young lads to get a bit of recognition and do something outside our usual cooking environments. “I do think Dave deserved to win. He made a great dish and I shook his hand when I found out he’d won.”

Paul Robinson (left) of Robinsons Brewery presented the Readers’ Choice Award

READERS’ CHOICE 1554 This coffee shop situated in Sheffield Cathedral is evidently adored by new and regular clientele alike. The coffee shop is a brand new concept inside the Cathedral and is now somewhere locals can go to enjoy a relaxing drink or a light bite. Manager, Ruth Maher and assistant, Deborah Louise-Martin were overjoyed to hear they had won the approval of Westside readers. Ruth said: “We have only been open under two years, so we are flabbergasted. To be nominated for an award and to win... we are feeling amazing.” Deborah added: “We are not only a place for coffee but one for friendship. We are astonished and so thankful to be here tonight and to win. We just want to thank everyone for voting for us.”

BEST INDIAN RESTAURANT Prithi Raj Prithi Raj remains true to the regional cuisines of India and Bangladesh with a menu that combines traditional spices and contemporary twists to create tantalising aromatic dishes. The menu provides a good mix of well-loved classics and newer dishes from the Chef’s Special range, including plenty of choice for those who crave a little more spice. Jalal Miah, owner Mizan Rahman’s brother, accepted the award on his behalf. He said: “It feels great to have won. It is all down to teamwork from the front and back of house, and being a family-run business gives us a little boost.”

BEST NEWCOMER The Front Room Tucked away in Hillsborough, The Front Room is the new kid on the block in Sheffield’s Indian restaurant scene, but it is already known for its classic dishes – executed with fine-dining mastery – and continued success in delivering the food of India. You’ll be greeted by gleaming white walls, gilded columns and the faint sound of rhythmic Indian music playing in the background. The Front Room creates a real sense of occasion. You’ll also find plenty of classic dishes to choose from, particularly a great selection of vegetarian options. Manager Nadim Khan said: “We’ve only been open a year and a half so it is very exciting to have won. I think our success is down to the fact that we serve good quality Indian food.”

BEST CAFÉ/LIGHT BITE

Hidden Gem The Hidden Gem Café at Ringinglow offers a welcome retreat set back from the hustle and bustle of the city. Outside the café comprises a quiet courtyard entrance with views of climbing roses, grass lawns and flowered arches, and inside it is a fine example of a venue that started as a charitable enterprise and is now much more. Head chef, Scott Philliskirk said: “We were in a category with a lot of good places, but it’s amazing and exciting to have won.” “We are a bit different and constantly pushing ourselves to go that one step further. “Our bistro nights are very well established now but want to expand on this so we are looking at taster menus as the next step.”

BEST ORIENTAL RESTAURANT Patoo Thai The popular and authentic south-east Asian eatery was opened seven years ago by Jariya Sancunakorn and has been chosen as our Best Oriental Restaurant for the last four years. It’s not just the food or the service that make Patoo Thai stand out from the crowd, it’s the whole package. Owner Jariya Sancunakorn was blown away to add to her achievements of previous years. She said: “I didn’t expect to win, so this is amazing. It is such an honour to have won this award for four years. “Our success is down to all the team at Patoo Thai and of course most importantly the support of our customers.”

BEST HOTEL RESTAURANT Brocco on the Park

BEST FAMILY-FRIENDLY

The Hyde Park Inn Owners Tom and Vee O’Reilly have established a traditional, flavoursome menu along with a warm and welcoming atmosphere where anyone is welcome – even your four-legged friends. The setting is a traditional pub, and the food at The Hyde Park Inn delivers big flavours with some style. Most of the dishes on the menu are classics, it’s the little twists that make all the difference to their mouth-watering food. Vee said: “It is absolutely wonderful to have won and something we have been working towards for coming up four years now. It is fabulous to have been recognised.” Tom added: “Our success is down to hardwork, all of our team and interacting with customers and the children. We’re heading in the right direction so are just going to keep doing what we are doing.”

In the heart of social Sheffield, Brocco is perfectly placed for the city’s green spaces, theatres and universities. Owner Tiina Carr is constantly re-inventing the menu and events, to keep things fresh and give customers more reasons to come back. Tiina said: “We won this last year, so it is great to win again. We all work very hard, especially head chef, Leslie Buddington who runs an amazing restaurant.” Leslie added: “We have worked really hard this year and created an imaginative menu which customers seem to like.” Tiina Added: “In the future we are going to keep doing what we are now, and continue to establish ourselves within Sheffield. We want to attract more people to think of us as a stand-alone restaurant and not just a hotel.”

BEST NIGHT OUT Kettle Black The new kid on the block in Ecclesall Road’s cocktail scene is a treasure trove of decadence. It has undergone a glamourous refurbishment and is now drenched in neon worktops, brass hanging lightbulbs and rich wooden floors. All of this is fully complemented by a heated courtyard veranda – perfect for an afternoon drink – cosy VIP mezzanine and a soundtrack of rehashed club classics that sound as funky as ever through the hefty sound system. Owners Pete Harpham and David Nicholson felt fantastic and were grateful to have been recognised as the Best Night Out in Sheffield. David said: “You always try and feel confident that you are going to win. We like to think that we have created something new.” Pete added: “We try and make everyone feel special at Kettle Black. It’s a VIP night for everyone, we have good friendly staff, are well-presented and serve great drinks.”

BEST PUB Tickled Trout The Tickled Trout in Barlow is no stranger to success in the Westside awards, having previously won Reader’s Choice and Best Gastro Pub. Owner Chris Mapp said: “I am really pleased and happy for the team, they all work so hard. It is fully deserved as they are a fantastic bunch and I couldn’t ask for anything more. We have excellent service, our friendly and young energetic people. Frankie James-Birch, front of house manager added: “I am ecstatic, we’ve won three years in a row now and tonight was a real surprise. We are very much like a family at the Tickled Trout and all work very closely together.” Chris added: “We always want to make ourselves better, so plans for improvement are always on the table with something constantly around the corner.”

BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT Rossi’s With its grand décor and delicious dishes, it’s no wonder Rossi’s has stood the test of time. You’ll be ushered through the door by a uniformed doorman into the interior which is nothing short of an art gallery. It has domed ceilings, wall-to-wall marble and even a statue of David. Rossi’s has been going strong since 1983 and provides locals with traditional Italian cuisine along with a vast selection of world wines. RMC BOOKS

Telling it as it was THERE IS MUCH TO LEARN FROM SUCCESSFUL SHEFFIELD BUSINESSMAN SIR HUGH SYKES, WHO REVEALS ALL IN A NEW BOOK FROM RMC MEDIA. he deal was, to say the least, a big one. At stake was the chance to become a world leader in the market. All that was standing in the way was one shareholder. Trouble was, the shareholder was American. And he was not about to sell to an English buyer. End of story. Not quite. Because the buyer in question was Hugh Sykes and he wasn’t about to be put off by the repeated rebuffs. Where hardnosed business talk had failed, charm succeeded. The resourceful Mr Sykes located an English stately home where the aristocratic owner would, for a fee, entertain guests to dinner and an overnight stay. So it was that the two men and their wives dined in state, enjoying impeccable service from the butler and his staff, plus a tour of the place with the Lord of the Manor himself. The American couple were bowled over by this display of English hospitality, and all resistance to the big deal melted. The tale says a lot about Sir Hugh Sykes, and he in turn says a great deal about the business world in his new book Lighting the Furnace – the story of a burning ambition (RMC Media, £16.95). In it, he recalls a business career which saw him take a small homespun business in the Derbyshire village of Bamford and build it

T

into a serious international player which he later sold for a cool £72million. Yet this is not just another dry business biography. Sir Hugh devotes significant space to special quick-reference sections aimed at providing basic advice for those who would seek to emulate his achievements. As such, it is required reading for the would-be entrepreneur. Endorsements come in the shape of a warm reception from the likes of former Prime Minister Sir John Major, who welcomed the book with the comment “There is much to learn from him”. The Sykes name, of course, has a special resonance in Sheffield. Even those unaware of his business achievements will forever associate him with the transformation of the city’s East End in his role as Chairman of the Sheffield Development Corporation, which oversaw radical and permanent changes to the previously run-down area of the Lower Don Valley. The efforts of the SDC changed the face of the city forever. But it was not all plain sailing. A chapter dealing with the story of the regeneration has the ominous title Mutiny and Chaos. Sir Hugh does not shy away from telling it as it was, with opposition both internal and political. As such, it’s a fascinating insight into the Sheffield of the eighties and nineties.

Lighting the Furnace (ISBN: 978-1-907998-30-0) is available via amazon.co.uk or through bookshops. Proceeds of sale will go to St Luke’s Hospice. Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 89

SHOPPING

How to shop the summer sales TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU SAVE MONEY AND BAG A BARGAIN. or bargain hunters, summer sales can be a thrilling experience. But before you dive in head first, take a moment consider some important advice, which could save you even more money. Follow our tips and you’ll never find yourself with a wardrobe full of unworn clothes or a garage full of unused gadgets again.

F

If there’s something you’ve had your eye on all year that is likely to be reduced, get in there as soon as you can before it’s snapped up. Alternatively, if you’re less bothered about the specifics – for example, if you’d like a new TV but don’t mind which one – leaving it until the last possible opportunity will probably get you a bigger discount as prices are slashed further towards the end of the sale.

Set your priorities

Before you set off, or go online, make a nonegotiation list to ensure you don’t end up with piles of things you don’t need or want, just for the sake of the bargain. If you’re really organised you’ll already know the key items you’re hoping to bag but, if not, jot down your must-haves and put your energy into getting these first. This will also keep you focused when there are a thousand other things to distract you. Stock up on new-season trends

Fashion retailers often reduce the trendiest items the most, along with anything they didn’t get rid of in the January sales. This is often where the best buys can be had. Do your homework on key looks before you head out and you could save a fortune on pieces that will still be on-trend in months to come. Time it right

Go either super early or at the very last minute. 92 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

allow you to return sales stock, even if it’s within fewer days than usual, so you can grab as much as you like and then try it all on at home when you’re more relaxed and can decide which items you definitely want. Just be sure to choose wisely and then return within the allotted time – yes, even if you like absolutely everything. Do your research

Check the return policy

Big discounts tap into the most basic element of sales – urgency. The fear of missing out by not buying then and there is overwhelming but often leads to impulsive buying. The key here is to utilise the store’s return’s policy. Many shops

‘Before you set off, or go online, make a nonegotiation list to ensure you don’t end up with piles of things you don’t need or want.’

The beauty of the internet is that, before you even step foot outside your front door, you can go online to check the best prices. Not only will you be able to identify which shops are offering the best deals, but if you note down how much you can find something for online, you’ll also make sure you don’t pay over the odds in store. Set a budget

It’s easy to get giddy at the sight of a 50-percent-off ticket, but if it’s more than you were intending to spend, you won’t feel the full benefit. Keep a budget for each item in mind and stick to it. Invest wisely

Higher quality items last far longer so, although you’re initially spending more, the Higher quality items last far longer so, although you’re initially spending more, the cost-per-wear should even out in time.

Slim yourself

HAPPY!

STEVE AND HELENA LELEW WERE AMAZED AT THE RESULTS AFTER THEY DECIDED TO LOSE WEIGHT WITH THE HELP OF ALEVERE THERAPY AT G&M HEALTHCARE. f you are looking to transform your life and lose weight rapidly, choose the Alevere Therapy. Trying to lose weight can be a slog, especially in the early days when carrying those extra pounds can make exercise all the more challenging. That’s why Steve and Helena Lelew decided to get a head start, with the Alevere Therapy at G&M Healthcare. Dr Grace and her team are on hand throughout the process, providing a friendly, supportive and professional service. “We’d lost weight in such a short space of time, and once we’d got down to our baseline weights it was easier to keep it up,” says Steve. “We now have much more energy and more motivation to exercise.” Steve had tried diets and slimming groups in the past, and even a similar weight loss treatment five years ago, but the weight had slowly crept back on. “I’m approaching 60 now and one thing

I

that really motivated me was a few years ago when I went to an event with my twin brother. He weighed a stone more than me and someone said, ‘Is that your older brother?’ It was then I realised that being heavier can make you look much older.” This time, Steve was more determined and committed than ever before. And doing the treatment and diet plan together with his wife, meant they were able to support each other to stay on track. “I didn’t like the idea of a gastric band, but I wanted something with quick results, that would keep the weight off long term.” “They do three things. First of all you have an ultrasound where they find and deal with those bits you can’t lose through exercise. Second, they use an LPG machine to give you a skin tightening treatment. They then give you vitamin supplements and instructions of what you can eat. “Our therapists Sarah and Leyanne have been really nice and helpful. They’ve been on

And it’s not just their appearances and attitude to fitness that have changed. It’s improved their general health too. “We feel more positive. Our cholesterols and blood pressures are both down, which is amazing!” Despite being more motivated than ever to keep the pounds off, Steve says he still gets to give into temptation from time to time. “When I’ve been low and started creeping down to the fridge, Helena will stop me. Although you can get away with the odd treat and bounce back.” Looking back over his whole weight loss journey, would Steve recommend Alevere to other people? “As long as you stay committed and fully embrace all of their advice, it’s well worthwhile. It’s nice to know that G&M do other treatments too, but neither of us want to go back to our old lifestyles now!”

the plan themselves and it was reassuring to have regular check-ups once a week. “We also saw Dr Grace at regular intervals, who was very thorough and informative about the programme. We had lots of tests and she explained why each stage of the diet was important.” The whole process took 12 weeks, in which time, Steve had lost 3st 2lb and Helena had lost 2st. This meant Steve had gone down to 13st 2lb, whilst Helena was delighted to ditch her size 14 wardrobe in exchange for a slim size 8. Now at what Steve calls their ‘baseline weights’, managing their diet has become much easier. “I didn’t used to like vegetables, but after being weaned off the supplements, I actually craved them! Now we go to the supermarket and we know what a healthy trolley looks like, so it’s been a massive education too. “I used to see slim people and think ‘I want to look like that’ and now I do. Helena says she feels like a new person. I actually came home the other day and was surprised to find her boxing. We’ve been getting so many compliments – I feel younger!”

Norwegian good

MAIN PICTURE: Pulpit Rock, a steep cliff which rises 604 metres above the Lysefjorden BELOW: The oil terminal

CHRIS WILSON ENJOYS A BRACING BREAK IN STAVANGER, CAPITAL OF NORWAY’S OIL BOOM. ention that you have just been to Norway, and the odds are you will be asked about the cost of a round of drinks. Never mind the Vikings, mountain trolls or mystical beasts reputed to lurk in the depths of the fjords, it’s the legend of the pricey pint that seems to linger in the British consciousness. So, to answer your question, around £8 for a ‘large beer’ that I reckon was just short of a pint, and the same for a glass of wine. Pricey enough to deter the stag and hen crowd, but not quite enough to demand total abstinence. Just go careful… and don’t get involved in any big rounds. We were staying in Stavanger, a large, bustling port just over an hour’s flight from

M

Newcastle Airport on BMI Regional. The harbour is the heart of the town with navy boats and cruise ships jostling for position while the water’s edge is busy with bars (where those prices certainly don’t seem to act as a deterrent) and fancy seafood restaurants. Head for the narrow, winding streets away from the waterfront and you’ll find many more dining and drinking opportunities, along with plenty of designer shops. There is also a large oil terminal further along the bay, a solid symbol of the reasons for those signs of prosperity. On 23 December, 1969 Norway struck an offshore oil field rich enough to guarantee the nation’s wealth for generations to come.

Cruise ships are a familar sight on the waterfront in Stavanger 108 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

From that day onwards, Stavanger was slowly transformed from a dying community where sardine canning was the main form of employment, to the boom town of today. With so much to see and all of it within close proximity, Stavanger is an ideal weekend break location. A city stroll to get your bearings is a sensible first step, and this will inevitably lead you to Old Stavanger, a truly lovely area of steep cobbled streets, perfect wooden houses gleaming with white and pastel shades, immaculate gardens and hanging baskets. This is also where you will find the sardine canning museum. OK, so reading that sentence didn’t make your pulse quicken, but trust me, this place is a gem. Take a guided tour courtesy of museum manager Piers Crocker, an Englishman who married a local girl and never left, and lose yourself for an hour in his fishy tale of the local industry that reflects the town’s fluctuating pre-oil fortunes… and don’t forget to pick up a tin of chocolate sardines from the gift shop on your way out. There are other ways to see the sights. A Segway tour of street art, which seems to be embraced locally rather than dismissed as cultural vandalism, saw me tackling an unlikely form of transport. Thankfully our guide Rami stashed his machines in an

TRAVEL

underground car park, which was deserted and therefore the perfect place to find your balance before taking to the streets. Those gentle practice runs did not quite prepare us for the more demanding task of going uphill on wet, leafstrewn cobbles, but even the most ungainly member of our group (i.e. me) quickly got the hang of it and lived to tell the tale. All this activity, and the bracing sea air, will work up a healthy appetite. For seafood lovers Fisketorget, which has a dominant position at the top of the harbour, is a combined restaurant and fish market where I ate tremendous creamy fish soup with crunchy croutons and pan-fried hake with baked root vegetables, spinach, celeriac purée and shellfish sauce. Over the course of our weekend we also enjoyed local venison at Hall Toll, another harbour-side restaurant in the old customs building, and char-grilled squid and steak at Renaa Maltbaren, the informal, contemporary sister bistro of a rather more sedate Michelin-

starred venue next door. After dark the bars are packed, and with canopies, heaters and blankets as standard, sitting outdoors with a cold beer is a yearlong pastime. Dress accordingly, of course, this is northern Europe so fleeces, hats, gloves and waterproofs are always travel essentials. We stayed at the Victoria Hotel, in the heart of the town on the harbour edge and pleasingly traditional. The rooms were modern and pristine, but the best thing about the hotel was the staggeringly good buffet breakfasts. Forget your wormy bacon and fried eggs turning to bullets under heat lamps, we were offered vegetable juice shots and fruit smoothies, inventive salads of spinach, watermelon and pinenuts, smoked salmon, beetroot, pickled cucumbers and the local black bread. It was healthy, invigorating and a positively lifeenhancing way to start the day. Away from the busy town, fjords and mountains dominate the landscape and even on a short stay it’s essential to get a taste of

the true Norwegian wilderness. A 30-minute coach trip to the outskirts of the neighbouring town of Sandnes took us to the starting point for an exhilarating afternoon hike that took us to the top of the Dalsnuten mountain. The last section was suitably strenuous but the rewards came with breath-taking views of the Jaeren region, with distant mountain ranges, lakes and fjords seemingly stretching to infinity, and looking back towards the sea, an equally dazzling view of Stavanger glistening in the late afternoon sun. We’d already packed for all weathers, of course, and this particular afternoon stroll definitely required hiking boots. Our final morning left one thing to be ticked off our ‘must do’ list and that was the fjord cruise from Stavanger to Pulpit Rock, a steep cliff which rises 604 metres above the Lysefjorden. The view from the top of the rock is the shot you’ll see in all the guide books, and it’s one of Norway’s most popular tourist destinations for those with the energy to tackle a full day’s walk with a strenuous climb at the end. I must admit, floating in the bay looking up at the sheer rock face, I suddenly wished I was one of those hikers on top of the rock looking down. Maybe next time.

Factbox: One-way flights from Newcastle to Stavanger start from £80. As with all bmi fares the price includes 23kg of hold luggage, allocated seating, complimentary in-flight drinks and snacks and speedy 30-minute check-ins. www.bmiregional.com. www.newcastleairport.com www.regionstavanger-ryfylke.com

EATING OUT

Fishing for compliments SEAFOOD CAME HIGHLY RECOMMENDED AT MARANELLO’S – AND DIDN’T DISAPPOINT, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. or me, all great Italian restaurants have three things in common; a family-friendly atmosphere, authentic décor and a wide range of seafood dishes. Maranello’s on Ecclesall Road manages to tick every one of these boxes. And what’s more, owner Alfredo Geci and his team seem to achieve them with absolute ease. Alfredo may have been the only waiter working when my friend and I visited on a warm summer’s evening, but he served every customer promptly and with a smile. Shortly after we took our seats, Alfredo took a dessert with a sparkler over to a delighted lady who was celebrating her birthday – a good indicator that Maranello’s is equipped to cater for family celebrations. The exposed brickwork with vintage advertisements for classic Italian brands, an impressive wine display and marble tables all add to the authentic feel, whilst the specials board lists further meat and seafood dishes, adding to an already endless list of tempting options. After a refreshing glass of Prosecco Costaross (20cl, £6.95) for me and a fruity glass of Merlot Terre Del Noce (175ml, £5.25) for my companion, I started with the funghi gamberi (£6.95) – juicy mushrooms and prawns baked in a tomato garlic and

F

114 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

béchamel sauce, topped with satisfyingly stringy mozzarella. Meanwhile, my companion started with the asparagi con prosciutto (£6.95) – a generous portion of long stemmed asparagus, drizzled with garlic butter and balsamic vinegar accompanied by a slice of salty Parma ham – delicious enough to give anyone food envy. For mains, I chose the spigola (£18.95) from the specials board. Alfredo brought over a whole sea bass, which was so impressive, I didn’t know whether to eat or applaud. Its skin was baked to a crisp and was covered in a moreish white wine, garlic, parsley and lemon olive oil. Accompanied by a side of carrots, potatoes and string beans, it was a portion big enough for two. However, my companion was busy enjoying her risotto marinara (£11.50) from the a la carte menu. A risotto packed full of tiger prawns, cherry tomatoes and basil, thick enough to stand decorative and delectable mussels around the edge of the bowl. Moving on to dessert, I had the homemade tiramisu (£4.95) and my dining companion had the tartufo limoncello (£4.95). My companion’s dessert was presented as a bright yellow bomb, exploding with a strong and zingy limoncello centre and covered in a raspberry sauce.

My tiramisu was light and fluffy, filled with layers of cream and liqueur-drenched sponge in an elegant dessert glass, topped with a dusting of chocolate powder. Every Italian restaurant has their own approach to this classic dessert and this version ranked as one of my favourites. In the spirit of Italian dining, my companion and I stayed long after dessert, chatting into the evening – and Alfredo was happy to oblige. With excellent food, impeccable service and a bring your own wine offer from Sundays to Thursdays, Maranello’s has to be one of the best places in Sheffield for a big friends or family gettogether. EATING OUT

Catch the taste train CHRIS WILSON ENJOYS SOME ADVENTUROUS INDIAN COOKING AT RAJDHANI. ost of us know what we want when we visit an Indian restaurant: same starters, same sides, same mains, time after time. All those interesting and unusual dishes from a vast country that has a wide variety of regional and traditional cuisine might as well not be on the menu. This isn’t really a problem for Afzal Miah, the genial and extremely knowledgeable manager of Rajdhani. As long as the customers are happy, so is he. But just in case you are feeling a little adventurous, Afzal is thinking of making a few adjustments and adding his own favourites to the menu. “My family is from Bangladesh but when I am at home I have the taste for South Indian food,” he told me on my latest visit to this smart, airy restaurant. Afzal was in the mood to throw a couple of interesting new starters that have not made it onto the menu yet our way. Volunteer tasters wanted... how could we refuse? First up was the exotically named chemeen thoren, which turned out to be a prawn and coconut stir fry. This really tweaked the taste buds, not chilli-hot but zinging with sharpness and just enough coconut to cool things down. The prawns were tender and juicy, we were hugely impressed.

M

116 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

The second starter was chicken imli, which Afzal told us was a typical home-style dish with bay leafs, cinnamon and cloves. Two dipping sauces – tamarind and coconut – helped make these new-to-us starters gloriously memorable. Our verdict on both dishes: get them on the menu now. Our meal had started in a more conventional manner with crisp papadoms (70p each) and a pickle tray (£2.50) with no less than six dips including a particularly lovely lime pickle. Some traditions just can’t be improved upon. For mains we also went back to the standard menu although again, under Afzal’s guidance, we tried another dish that he loves to make at home, ayre fish sylhet (£12.90). This recipe from rural Bangladesh, cooked with baby potatoes, had a mild sauce with a delicate fragrant aroma perfect for the very fresh and clean tasting white fish which is cooked on the bone. As a contrast our second main, deli chicken (£8.50) packed plenty of heat from a sauce bursting with garlic, ginger, roasted onions, chillies and tomatoes. Side dishes of tarka daal (£3.90) and brinjal bhaji (3.90) were uniformly excellent, kulcha nan with green chillies and coriander (£3.50) was soft and slightly crispy, the ideal

soaker-upper for those delicious sauces. The Kingfisher beer (£4.90) was suitably chilled, a glass of fresh salty lassi (£2.50), a refreshing Indian yoghurt-based drink, the ideal thirstquencher for my teetotal companion. While commuters waited outside to be whisked to the wilds of Manchester and Stockport, we were glad we had taken the road less travelled. This former railway station waiting room is the perfect starting point for a culinary journey with a difference. BRADIE PELL EXPLAINS WHY PEOPLE WHO COHABIT ARE TREATED DIFFERENTLY TO MARRIED COUPLES WHEN IT COMES TO SPLITTING UP.

Common law spouse – fact or fiction? arriage appears to be becoming less popular, with more and more couples choosing to cohabit rather than ‘tying the knot’. Often, people who cohabit rather than marry, refer to themselves as ‘common law spouses’, generally because they live together as if they were married but without the expensive party! The term common law spouse is also used on various data gathering forms to describe your living arrangements – a fact that I have always found somewhat strange, especially when there is, in fact, no such thing as a common law spouse. It is a complete myth. The reality is that married couples and cohabiting couples are treated very differently in the eyes of the law in the event of separation. Whilst the common law spouse myth often leaves cohabiting couples believing that they will have the same claims to their partners’ assets as they would if they were married (because they are common law spouses), this is not necessarily true. In fact, a cohabiting partner has no claim on any of their partner’s assets unless they have an interest. For example, they would have no claim on the other partner’s pension (which is often one of the highest value assets a person may have). Similarly, if the main home is owned in one partner’s sole name (rather than jointly), the other cohabitee would not automatically have a claim; they would instead have to prove that they have an

M

interest in the property (for example by way of contribution or express agreement). Contrastingly, for the married couple, all of the assets would go into the ‘joint pot’ whether owned in one person’s sole name or jointly and then consideration would be given as to how those assets should be shared (whether equally or unequally depending on the circumstances). Another area in which cohabiting couples differ from married couples is spousal maintenance. There has been a lot of coverage in the press lately about stay at home husbands/wives who have continued to be maintained by their spouse following separation. This is usually because it was agreed between them during their marriage that one spouse Bradie Pell would stay at home; (usually) with the children whilst the other focused on their career and became

the ‘breadwinner.’ However, for cohabiting couples in the same situation there would be no spousal maintenance for the lower earning partner upon separation; they would simply part ways with no financial obligation to maintain the cohabitee who has stayed at home, looked after the children and supported the other in their career choices. A cohabiting partner has no claim on the other party’s income. However harsh this may sound it is a clear example of the different remedies available to cohabiting couples compared with married couples. So, if you see yourself as a common law spouse, remember there is actually no such concept and the rights each of you may have in respect of assets can be limited. If an asset is intended to be treated in a specific way upon separation (i.e. shared), it is important that you obtain legal advice as to how to protect your position or you could find yourself in a messy and costly situation.

Graysons family law experts offer a free initial consultation to all new clients, so if you wish to discuss this matter or require advice on any family law issue please contact us on 01142 050 366 , family@graysons.co.uk, www.graysons.co.uk, Facebook: Graysonslaw Twitter:@Graysonslaw

MOTORING

BLACK IS BACK The Black Edition was always a firm favourite of many A4 buyers, so much so that for this new A4 model the Black Edition trim has returned. Available on all A4 engines, the Black Edition guarantees stand-out appeal through 19-inch five-arm rotor alloy wheels in a matt titanium finish (or the no-cost option of 18inch 10 Y-spoke gloss black alloys), complemented by a titanium black styling pack which extends to the mirror housings, singleframe grille and window surrounds, side skirts, rear spoiler (fitted to the saloon) and air intakes. Black roof rails also complement these accents in Avant models, and in both body styles privacy glass is added for the rear windows. Prices start from £32,350 (1.4 TSI Saloon) to £44,350 (3.0-litre V6 TDI Quattro).

Performance increase

Special summit

When the updated Golf GTI was introduced at the start of this year, it had a power increase that brought it in line with the previous Golf GTI Performance. Now the updated Golf GTI Performance model has itself become a more potent proposition thanks to its new output of 242hp. With an increase of 15hp compared to the previous model, today’s GTI Performance model is now the most potent Golf GTI currently available. Standstill to 62 mph is reached in just 6.2 seconds, and those figures apply to the six-speed manual as well as the newly developed seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox. The GTI’s top speed is 155mph in manual form, and 154mph when equipped with the DSG gearbox. Prices start from £29,280.

Dacia has launched a new special edition range – the SE Summit – on the Duster, new Sandero Stepway and new Logan MCV Stepway, based on the top-level trim for each vehicle. Revealed at the Geneva International Motor Show in March, the distinctive and affordable Summit Special Editions will be available in the UK from June priced from £10,995. Inspired by the great outdoors, the SE Summit range bring an exclusive and unique look to the range and provide extra equipment over and above the existing top-of-range versions. The SE Summit range adds an additional colour to the Dacia range – named Nordic Grey – and it incorporates Burnt Orange stitching and carious accents into the interior on top of all the standard equipment which is already available.

Electric MINI Say hello to MINI’s first ever plug-in hybrid. It’s called the Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 and it’ll receive it’s UK debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 hybrid system is made up of a three-cylinder petrol engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology and a synchronous electric motor. Together they generate a system output of 224hp enabling the car to sprint from standing to 62mph in 6.8 seconds. Not bad for a car which achieves 134.5mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 49g/km of CO2. As the name suggests, the Countryman is all-wheel drive too. Standard equipment includes Satellite Navigation, Bluetooth, Cruise Control, Emergency Ecall and Active Guard. Prices start from £31,585. 122 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

Belmond Enchanted Gardens wins Gold at new RHS Chatsworth Flower Show Belmond Enchanted Gardens has won gold at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, Derbyshire. Designed by Butter Wakefield, Belmond’s garden is a thoughtful combination of playfulness and practical planting. It showcases the international world of Belmond’s gardens, from the legendary Belmond Hotel Cipriani’s Casanova Gardens where the roguish seducer is reputed to have held secret assignations with his lovers, to the historical gardens of Belmond El Encanto, Santa Barbara with century old wisteria.

Monte Carlo or Bust for old banger fans Paul and Judy It was Monte Carlo or Bust for keen motorist and St Luke’s Hospice supporter Paul Howard as he took to the road on a fundraising wing and a prayer. Paul, the community liaison manager at Sheffield’s Parkwood Academy, and wife Judy were competing in the Monte Carlo or Bust Banger Rally which saw them drive through six European countries to glamorous Monaco and back in a £500 20-year-old Subaru Impreza. But for Paul and Judy, all their hours on the road were worth it as they raised more than £2,000 for Sheffield’s only hospice. Beginning in Namur, Belgium and finishing in Monte Carlo, the 3,000km route took the couple and fellow old banger fans through Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France on a journey that included such famous locations as the Black Forest, Lake Como and the Gotthard Pass. “This was an incredible way to raise money for St Luke’s and the support from Paul’s school, Parkwood Academy, and their many sponsors and friends was fantastic,” said hospice community fundraising manager Megan Senior. “They actually set out to raise £1,000 and have easily doubled that, which will make an enormous difference to the lives of St Luke’s patients and their families.”

One of the country’s leading restaurant entrepreneurs has unveiled a first for Sheffield city centre – lunchtime fine dining. Michael Standerline, who recently bought the city’s renowned Silversmiths restaurant, teamed up with the Lord Mayor of Sheffield and scores of the city’s business people to launch the initiative. He believes the city now offers far greater business potential than either Leeds or Manchester and wanted to ensure an independent business led the way in offering a higher quality, dinnertime menu. The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Denise Fox, was one of the first to sample the new affordable fine dining menu. “There is an incredible buzz around Sheffield city centre at the moment thanks to multi-million-pound regeneration projects like the regeneration of The Moor and work starting on the New Retail Quarter. I’ve worked in cities right across the country and I’m confident the demand now exists for a higher quality of independent lunchtime dining in my hometown – Sheffield,” says Michael.

Britain’s strongest man is coming to Sheffield The biggest, strongest men in the country are storming Sheffield Arena on 27 January 2018 for the ultimate showdown of strength. The contest is part of the Official World’s Strongest Man qualifying tour, and had a sell-out show last year – with qualifying shows pulling in audiences of 10,000+. The show will be filmed for Channel 5 and is set to be the battle to end all battles. All the biggest stars of British Strongman will be there to hoist stones, throw kegs, carry cars and lift heavy metal to prove they have the herculean determination to overcome five gruelling tests of strength and be crowned Britain’s Strongest Man. The Beast himself, Eddie Hall – famous for his 500kg World Record Deadlift – with steely-eyed grit, is set to defend his title against rival underdog and crowd favourite, Laurence ‘Big Loz’ Shahlaei.
