The pandemic challenge HOW HAS COVID-19 AFFECTED DESIGNER KITCHEN DIRECT? THEY TELL US THEIR STORY. Working our way back The lockdown and isolation requirements to combat the Covid-19 pandemic has created several unique challenges for Designer Kitchen Direct and its many customers. At first we took essential precautions to protect our customers and staff who visit and work in our showroom and this included a strict hygiene and cleaning regime, whilst allowing our customers to visit the showroom for pre-booked appointments only, which ensured that social distancing measures could be maintained. Then came the lockdown, and the showroom had to close completely, as did our factory in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham.
The Lockdown When this was announced, we had a number of customers who were awaiting their new kitchen to be fitted during the following weeks. Some were able to postpone this work, but a few others were in a position where their old kitchen had been removed, and our building team, DKD Building Limited, were in the procress of knocking down walls and other works to accommodate the new kitchen to be fitted. All went to plan, and all of these were completed quickly and ensured that nobody had to endure many ‘lockdown’ weeks without any kitchen facilities, mainly because we manufacture our own kitchens and are therefore not reliant upon others to fulfil our obligations. During the lockdown, we have continued to receive many enquiries for new kitchens and bedrooms. Whilst we have been unable to come out to measure up and discuss the designs in person, all our designers have been
working from home and have continued to work up their ideas into fully detailed designs and present these to our customers via Skype and Zoom. Yaprak and Idl have worked up a three-dimensional walk-through video for each design, showing colours, styles, and design ergonomics, and Mary, Leah and Chloe have been able to play these during the online presentations.
The transition As the lockdown restrictions started to ease off, on 13 May we recommenced production in our factory, enabling us to supply the many customers who now want us to proceed with their new kitchen fit. Equally, we are fortunate that most of our appliance and accessories suppliers are also open again and able to provide us with these other essential components.
During that week, we also started another two new extensions, as our building team are able to isolate themselves entirely from the families living in the existing properties.
The future We feel fortunate that we remain busy and all our staff have a secure future ahead of them, but feel great sadness for the many businesses out there that are now struggling to survive. To rebuild the British economy, we feel that it is important that we should trade with local or other UK-based businesses wherever possible, and are committed to playing our part in this. We would like to thank all our customers for their continued support and patience in waiting for their new kitchens from us, and most of all, for BUYING BRITISH!
On 18 May we started our first kitchen fit in a new build property, and on 25 May three of our fitting teams, led by Nick, Jamie, and Julian, started the fit of three new kitchens in existing homes. Each one is accessed via a separate, rear door, and isolated from the rest of the house and occupants during working hours. Each team have a strict protocol, equipped with PPE and ensure that everything in the work area is sanitised at the end of each working day.
We expect our showroom to return to normal opening hours, Monday to Saturday 9am until 5pm, from Monday 15 June, subject to further government guidance.

“
e’ll meet again” was the refrain that captured the mood back in March, when the seriousness of the Covid-19 crisis was literally brought home to us. We’re pleased to say the wish expressed by the song has been granted. We’re back! And we look forward to bringing you the latest in lifestyle. By chance, this issue will arrive through your door on 19 June – 34 years to the day that Westside appeared on the local scene. So happy birthday to us! And happy reading to you!

GARDENING
Make your neighbours green with envy RICHARD ABBEY LOOKS AT TEN THINGS TO TACKLE IN THE GARDEN THIS SUMMER. f, like me, you’d run out of excuses for putting off that long list of garden-related jobs, chances are the last couple of months has seen you tick off more than a few of those ‘must-do’ chores. For the keen (and not so keen) gardeners amongst us, it’s been the ideal time in which to grow, develop and improve our outdoor spaces.Whatever your level of green-fingeredness, the Royal Horticultural Society (www.rhs.org.uk) is an invaluable resource and has some great advice to give your garden the wow factor. Here are ten top tips to improve your outdoor space (if you haven’t done them already).
I
1. Hoe borders regularly Summer has arrived, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put
on an exuberant burst of growth. But this also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. They can be controlled without resorting to weedkillers by hoeing regularly in dry conditions.
2. Be water-wise Ideally water plants early in the morning, to avoid evaporation loss during the day. On warm summer days, evening watering is also likely to be effective, the dry soil soaking it in readily and low humidity at night reducing risk of disease. To determine the need for watering, inspect the soil at a spade’s depth. If the soil feels damp, there is unlikely to be any need to water, but if it is dry, then watering is probably required for some plants.
3. TOMATOES Tomatoes produce abundant delicious
fruits in a range of colours, shapes and sizes and are best planted outside in early summer. Roots should be kept moist but never waterlogged. Pots and grow-bags require frequent watering, particularly once plants become more established. Irregular watering can result in splitting and blossom-end rot, whereas overwatering can impair flavour.
4. ‘Come again’ salads Produce your own mixed salads by growing a range of leafy salads and vegetables that can be cut and will then sprout (come) again. Harvesting the young leaves when you need them prevents plants from maturing and ensures several harvests of small, tender, mild-flavoured leaves over a long period of time. Popular crops include basil, beetroot, chicory, chard, endive, leaf celery, lettuce, pak choi, parsley, radicchio, red kale, rocket, sorrel and spinach.
5. Summer hanging baskets Hanging baskets provide valuable colour at eye level. Choose vibrant bedding plants for a short-term show or herbs, shrubs and evergreens for a long-lasting 40 www.sheffieldvibe.com

GARDENING
display. Popular summer varieties include Argyranthemum, Lysimachia (creeping jenny), Dichondra ‘Silver Falls’, Fuchsia, Pelargonium (geraniums), Lobelia,Viola (pansies), Petunia, Salvia and Nicotiana (tobacco plants).
6. LOVE YOUR LAWN At this time of year, the lawn is actively growing and requires feeding, mosskilling, weeding and regular mowing. If you really want to impress your neighbours a striped lawn looks very impressive, and isn’t that difficult to achieve if your mower has a rear roller. Rectangular lawns are easier to stripe than irregularly shaped lawns, but with a bit of practice, you can stripe up any lawn.
borders, containers and hanging baskets. Bedding can be grown from seed, bought as young seedlings (plug plants) or purchased as pot-grown specimens, often in multi-packs and cellular trays, ready for planting. Marigolds, calendula, dianthus, forget-me-nots, geraniums and begonias will all add striking colour.
8. Stake tall or floppy plants Perennials in borders often put on strong lush growth that makes them vulnerable to collapse, especially after heavy rain or strong winds. Staking them early in the season will help avoid disaster. In particular; tall plants and hybrids with large flowers, such as sunflowers, require additional support.
7. Plant out summer bedding
9. PRUNE SPRINGFLOWERING SHRUBS
Bedding plants provide a temporary decorative seasonal display for beds,
Early-flowering shrubs are pruned after flowering (in late winter to spring and
early summer, depending on the shrub). They usually flower on the previous year’s growth. Pruning immediately after flowering allows the maximum time for development of young growth to provide the following year’s flowers before the end of summer.
10. Keep greenhouses cool Greenhouses, whether of glass or plastic, can overheat in sunny weather. Plants can be protected from excess heat by shading and ventilation. For effective ventilation, monitor greenhouse temperature (ideally keep the internal temperature below 27ºC), open all doors and vents on sunny days and, if necessary, temporarily remove panes. www.sheffieldvibe.com 41

Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management "A complete re-design and transformation!" "Previously, we had a separate kitchen and dining room. As part of our plans going forward, we were ideally looking for a spacious area, where we could cook, dine, watch TV and relax, whilst being able to look into the garden and access it in the summer months We spoke to Dan at Dave Stone Design, who showed us a great vision for the proposed layout of our new family area. His plan was to re-design everything and build a sitting area extension, which incorporated a lounge and utility room. He showed us a detailed CAD illustration, which reflected exactly what we wanted. Dan and his team gave 100% throughout. Between them, they provided the complete installation package, which included builders, decorator, plumber, joiner, electrician...in fact...all tradesmen necessary to complete the job. They were happy to work from first thing in the morning until 8pm at night such was their dedication! We now have a family hub, with a beautiful sitting area and patio doors leading out into the garden. The utility room houses a small fridge and dryer. Within our impeccably-designed island kitchen, we have a glass-on-glass hob, dual cook flex oven, combi micro warming drawer, fully-integrated fridge freezer, designer radiators, Azzurro quartzite worktops, pop-up sockets, unermounted sink and swan-neck tap. The team also installed LVT flooring throughout, and fitted a velux window in the ceiling to let more light in. A magnificent team effort!" All change SAFETY AND WELLBEING WILL BE OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE TO CAROLINE HILL AS SHE PREPARES TO RELAUNCH HER CLINIC. HERE’S HOW THINGS WILL WORK. reating yourself to a beauty treatment has probably seemed like a pipe dream over the last couple of months – but that’s about to change. Barring any late changes to government guidelines, the personal care sector will be reopening their doors next month to welcome clients once again. Recently rebranded and relaunched, Caroline Hill Clinic offers a discreet professional service for men and women of all ages, to subtly slow the ageing process and enhance natural beauty using a range of non-surgical facial aesthetic treatments. Caroline is an experienced, skilled and expert injector, with an in-depth knowledge of how the ageing process can affect facial tissue and bone structure – using dermal skin filler to support facial ageing trigger points, lift sagging skin and enhance natural contours and definition in younger clients. Clinic director Caroline qualified as a registered general nurse in 1988 and has been practising at the forefront of the aesthetics industry since 2004. Since then she has continued to develop her skills and knowledge to ensure she delivers a unique and multidimensional approach to aesthetics; studying Dermatology at postgraduate level; receiving a Postgraduate Certificate in Non-Surgical Aesthetic Medicine and an Advanced BTEC in Laser Skin Health. During lockdown, Caroline Hill and her team have given their Ecclesall Road South premises a deep clean and introduced new measures to ensure the clinic is a safe environment for both staff and clients. “Your safety and wellbeing are of paramount importance to us and therefore we have policies and protocols in place to ensure we continue to exercise strict infection control measures to protect you and our staff,” says Caroline. In line with Public Health England guidelines, clients visiting the clinic from 4 July will be asked to carry out a health questionnaire prior to their

appointment and encouraged to attend alone if possible. Appointment times have been lengthened to ensure only one client will be treated in the clinic at a time. Visitors are asked to use the recently installed hand sanitiser dispenser on entry and taken straight through to the treatment room. All staff will wear PPE in accordance to the latest guidelines and appointments have been lengthened to allow time for rooms to be thoroughly disinfected after each treatment. In addition, review appointments will be offered online and Caroline will continue to post skincare products to clients free of charge. And they’re not the only changes that have been taking place at Caroline Hill Clinic. As a result of Caroline’s experience and passion, the clinic is Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered ensuring they are meeting the government’s national minimum standards. The clinic is overseen by Clinic Medical Director and Consultant Vascular Surgeon, Mr Dominic Dodd and supported by a team of highly professional administrative staff who safeguard exemplary standards of patient care and safety. Mr Dodd has a special interest in the minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins. He offers all treatment options including laser ablation (EVLA), Venaseal, foam sclerotherapy as well as surgical options. He first introduced EVLA to Sheffield in 2004 and has trained surgeons from all over the UK and Europe. Contact the clinic for further information about this service. Caroline and her experienced team are firm believers that you can look and feel great at any age. But at times, nature needs a helping hand to slow down the less desirable effects. They offer a personal and private experience designed to protect your anonymity and put you at ease and ensure you are comfortable throughout the entire treatment journey. The Sheffield Menopause Clinic This recent addition to Caroline Hill Clinic is a private nurse-led service for the management and treatment of menopausal symptoms. It is offered on a self-pay basis for women who wish to receive information, advice and treatment of menopausal symptoms as an alternative to the NHS provision. “We are dedicated to ensuring women receive up to date, accurate and unbiased evidence-based care,” explains Caroline. “We recognise that unfortunately many women receive conflicting and inaccurate information – especially in the media. “I have a special interest in menopause care, having recognised that many women are unable to access the information and treatment they require. We can diagnose and manage early menopause and help women in the transition phase (perimenopause).” Caroline has worked in many areas of women’s health during her 30-year nursing career, including gynaecology, midwifery and sexual health. The menopause is a natural transition
for a woman as she ages. However, as we are now living longer the effects of oestrogen depletion on the body can be profound and lead to significant health issues, such as heart disease and osteoporosis. Symptoms such as hot flushes, anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, urinary incontinence and vaginal dryness can be debilitating. “Our aim at The Sheffield Menopause Clinic is to provide you with all the latest information so that you can make an informed decision about your treatment to optimise your health and wellbeing through the menopause and beyond,” adds Caroline. “We can prescribe HRT for you and inform your GP with the outcome of your assessment and treatment choice. We want to dispel the myths around menopause and HRT, so that you can make an informed decision about your health.” Here is what some of her happy clients had to say: “I consulted Caroline when I discovered I was menopausal, after first going down the GP route and realising that the ‘one size fits all’
approach didn’t suit me. Caroline made me feel like an individual. Her kindness, patience and advice has helped me get my life back and I can’t praise her highly enough.” “Thank you Caroline for a really positive and informative experience. I feel so much better and that’s before I start my HRT!” To find out more, go to www.thesheffieldmenopauseclinic.co.uk. Caroline Hill Clinic is also planning to expand its women’s health services to include: counselling, pelvic floor physiotherapy, nutrition and wellbeing and also the management of chronic migraine. Coming soon will be new websites for both the aesthetic and menopause clinics, complete with new branding. A welcoming and safe environment PA JEWELLERY ARE GETTING READY TO WELCOME CUSTOMERS BACK THROUGH THEIR DOORS. HERE’S WHAT’S IN STORE. t’s been a tough few months for all of us; the Covid-19 pandemic has affected our lives in ways we perhaps never imagined. It’s been especially tough for small businesses that have had to adjust and adapt during this time, but green shoots of recovery are now starting to show. Like many retailers, proudly independent Sheffield business PA Jewellery has spent the last 12 weeks waiting for the day when they can reopen the doors to the Old Bank showroom and workshop at Commonside. Happily, that day is here and with adherence to government guidance, the expert jewellers will be welcoming customers once again from June 16th. Westside spoke to managing director Ian Cookson, who’s been overwhelmed by the support they’ve received. “Before closing we called all customers who had orders or repairs with us to reassure them that we would keep their precious things safe,” said Ian. “Many offered to pay for things in advance even though they couldn’t be collected yet because they didn’t want us to go short. It showed an amazing community spirit. We’re looking forward to welcoming them back in person.” Ian added: “We were quiet for the first couple of weeks but after that we saw an increase in enquiries and online orders, enough to un-furlough a small number of our staff and we have been posting out and even hand-delivering jewellery a couple of times a week. “Once we had an idea of when we would be able to reopen things got a lot busier and we have been hard at work preparing the showroom, workshop and office space to allow us to open and remain Covid-secure.” PA Jewellery have temporarily reduced their working week to five days. This allows employees that are shielding or have childcare responsibilities to remain at home and means the same team will work together consistently,

accommodating appropriate distancing in communal spaces and reducing the risk of the virus spreading between staff. Employees will be checked regularly for symptoms of Covid-19 including through daily temperature checks. Visits will be by appointment only – call 0114 266 9253 – to control the number of customers in the showroom at any one time and prevent more than one group arriving at the same time. Appointments are available 10am-5pm Tuesday to Friday and 9am-4pm on Saturdays. Inside, the showroom has been divided into ‘zones’ so each customer will have their own dedicated area for the duration of their visit. Transparent screens have been installed across all counters to allow the team of jewellers to safely meet visitors where two-metre distances can’t be maintained. Additional consultation space has been created away from the showroom for lengthier visits. In addition, PA Jewellery has fitted touch-free dispensers with 80 per cent alcohol hand sanitiser around the showroom and office space to make it easy for customers and staff to clean

New cleaning regimes have been introduced, including sanitising the showroom ‘zones’ between customers and regular cleaning of all touch points including door handles and shared equipment. To enhance safety measures further, Ian has overseen the purchase of specialist cleaning equipment, including a UV light box and medical grade ultrasonic machines, to safely sterilise all jewellery brought in for examination or repair and any items handled or tried on by customers. This means customers can feel confident and safe whether bringing a treasured item for repair or choosing a sparkling new piece. For anyone shielding or not comfortable visiting the showroom virtual consultations using Zoom are available so you can speak to their experienced, award-winning jewellers from the comfort of your own home. “Though we’ve had to make a few changes the important things are still the same; same genuine warm welcome, same values and outstanding service from the same committed and professional team,” concludes Ian. “We

IN BRIEF
Major boost to care home
Put the fun back into shopping Shopping will be more fun after lockdown thanks to illustrator, animator and designer Emily Redfearn. While she’s been living in isolation with her family in Meadowhead, Sheffield, Emily has put her artistic talents to good use, creating a series of hand painted shopping bags. And the unique colourful designs have already raised more than £100 for St Luke’s Hospice. Emily chose to support St Luke’s because her grandfather Trevor was a patient as he battled against stomach cancer. “My grandad was full of praise for St Luke’s all the time,” said 24-year-old Emily. “He was so thankful for everything the St Luke’s team did for him and so were the whole family. He died just before the lockdown started and when I found myself with so much time on my hands I realised it was the ideal time to give something back.” Emily ordered blank cotton bags online and then set about the task of decorating them all by hand with a series of bold and bright patterns before putting them up for sale on her own website, with the money raised being split between St Luke’s and the NHS. “It’s been good fun and relaxing and I know my grandad would be delighted that we’ve been able to raise some money for St Luke’s.” To buy one of Emily’s bags simply visit emilyredfearn.co.uk/shop
Charity shops to re-open St Luke’s Hospice has unveiled plans for the re-launch of its popular retail operations. The charity has a chain of 14 shops across Sheffield as well as extremely popular eBay and Amazon online shops. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March, all the St Luke’s retail operations were fully suspended. But now the charity’s retail team is gearing up for a phased return of all its services, following all government guidelines on safe trading. The next part of the operation to resume will be the St Luke’s Donation Centre at Fieldhouse Way, near Meadowhall, which opens for all non-furniture donations from 15 June. A fully staffed drive-through service will be in operation, launched to ensure the continued safety of both the St Luke’s team and visitors. Coinciding with this date, the St Luke’s donation line will re-open at the same time on 0114 235 7562 for people wanting to arrange furniture collections. 72 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Schoolboy Jack Oadley has given a £1,848 boost the Sheffield’s Knowle Hill Residential Care Home as a special tribute to his great aunt. Jack decided to complete a 10-mile run around nearby school playing fields to raise money for the Beighton home where 88-year-old Pat Tory is a resident. “The Knowle Hill team have done an amazing job looking after our Aunty Pat, who has been very poorly with Coronavirus and yet somehow has battled on with great will and determination to see her family again,” said Jack’s mum Rachel. “The wonderful staff have cared for her through the confusion and heartache that also comes with her being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.” And after hearing about the care Pat has received, 12-year-old Jack, a pupil at All Saints School, decided to run 12 times around Rainbow Forge School’s playing field, close to his home. “We were a little bit unsure that he’d be able to do it but with the support of his brothers William and Max, he not only finished but raised £1,848, which is going to the Knowle Hill residents’ comfort fund. “The original target was just £500 so we are all really proud of what he’s done.”
Sheffield artist shortlisted for national competition Abigail McGourlay has had two of her paintings shortlisted for The Arts Society’s prestigious Isolation Artwork Competition in support of young artists and students during lockdown. Abigail’s two art works will be exhibited as part of a virtual exhibition hosted on The Arts Society Connected website where members of the public will have a chance to vote for their favourite. Sheffcare announces new guidelines on visiting Sheffield care home charity Sheffcare has announced new guidelines on visiting residents. The charity which operates a chain of ten care homes across the city has followed all guidance from Public Health England during the COVID-19 pandemic. And now, as the rules on lockdown start to ease, the homes have announced changes to visiting, with immediate effect. “Initially visits will be for no more than thirty minutes and must take place outdoors with two visitors only,” Sheffcare Chief Executive Belinda Black explained. “Social distancing must be maintained throughout the visit and residents will need to be able to maintain this for the visit to go ahead.” Visits will have to be booked in advance via the individual home, where staff will be able to provide more information on visiting procedures and availability.

On the move THERE’S GOOD NEWS FOR THE HOUSING MARKET FOLLOWING LOCKDOWN, SAYS CAROLINE MURRAY, PARTNER AND HEAD OF THE PROPERTY TEAM AT GRAYSONS. ollowing weeks of lockdown, during which much of the UK’s housing market went into hibernation, things are on the move again. The government gave the go ahead in May for conveyancers to restart operations to get things moving for the estimated 450,000 buyers, sellers and renters who had been put on hold due to the coronavirus crisis, and for those who are looking for a new home. Estate agents and show homes have reopened, viewings are being carried out and removal firms have restarted. Everything is, of course, subject to the current social distancing rules, so everyone involved is maintaining a distance of least two metres from each other, and those who are self-isolating remain doing so. Under lockdown rules in England, moving house, where it was necessary and couldn’t be avoided, was one of the valid reasons people could leave their homes. Many people carried out online viewings whilst more held back until it was possible to view properties in person. The rules have now been amended, so, whilst virtual viewings are still recommended in the initial stages, you can now physically view a property in which you are interested, as long as you follow strict guidelines put in place by the government, such as: • Practice social distancing. • Only view properties with people who already live with you and limit the number where possible. • Wash your hands or use hand sanitiser before entering the property. • Avoid touching surfaces. Take your own hand sanitiser and use it regularly. • If you are selling your home, try to vacate it whilst viewings are taking place.
F
• Leave windows and internal doors open where possible and clean surfaces, door handles and light switches, for example, when the viewing is over. There is also guidance that will help everyone stay safe whilst you are packing up to move home. You can find the full government advice relating to moving home during the coronavirus/COVID19 outbreak on its website at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/governme nt-advice-on-home-moving-during-thecoronavirus-covid-19-outbreak If you are selling your property, you can now start to prepare it, which includes hiring the necessary tradespeople. If you are buying, you can now engage surveyors etc. Everyone will need to follow the government’s safer working guidance. Graysons’ property experts can help you with your sale or purchase and are practicing safe working. We are working remotely and can deal with your property issues, including: • Taking your initial instructions. • Drafting and/or approving the contract. • Checking title and raising and dealing with enquiries. • Arranging searches and dealing with your mortgage lender. • Exchanging contracts and dealing with completion. • Paying stamp duty on your behalf and updating the Land Registry. Caroline Murray, partner and head of
Graysons’ property team, says: “This is really good news for the housing market. According to Zoopla, around £82billion property sales were put on hold during the coronavirus lockdown. As well as the many people who will be delighted to be able to move forward with their sale and purchase now, there will be more who will be happy to be able to get out to look for a new home or put their property up for sale during what is traditionally the busiest time for the housing market. The Centre for Economic and Business Research (CEBR) has revised a prediction it made in April that prices would fall 13 per cent by the end of 2020, to forecasting a fall of 8.7 per cent this year, and, whilst buyers and sellers are understandably cautious, the market seems to be moving again. According to property website, Rightmove, interest in homes for sale has only dipped by seven per cent compared to the same time last year – which is also good news.” If you are buying or selling your home, you can get a no-obligation quotation from Graysons here https://www.graysons.co.uk/property/co nveyancy-tool/ then contact us so we can get your sale or purchase moving. Drive-By Will Signings We are here – just doing things differently
We have all been affected by the Coronavirus quite apart from fear of a disease which is serious for some, many of our clients and those in the community have been isolated for the last few months, missing family members, friends and normal life. A few are in the office but many of our staff are working from home and we are very limited in the face to face meetings we have with our clients and associates - to continue keep them and ourselves safe and well. But some of our work is essential. We still advise on and update Wills and Powers of Attorney – albeit in a different way. We can take instructions over the phone or through Skype, Zoom or Facetime, and of course there are still emails and post. Witnessing Wills can be more of a problem, though we will find a solution if we can. For those able to find a witness themselves we will send the Will for signature but for those able to drive to our offices we are offering Drive-By Witnessing in our carpark - you stay in your car
and we can witness in a proper socially distanced manner with protective equipment available if required. As well as Wills, we are still helping bereaved families obtain Probate and the administration of deceased estates and can provide advice to anyone who has recently lost a loved one as to the best course of action to take in this difficult time. We also continue to assist and advise some of the more vulnerable in our community - often elderly people without close family who need help with their finances or arranging for their care - and we are back to business as usual in our Property Department now that estate agents and removal companies are back working. If you would like to discuss any of the above or have any queries, please contact us and we will try to help if we can. Please keep well and safe. Please call on 0114 2290160 or email mail@rwatchorn.co.uk.

Vito Ciaraolo
Vito Ciaraolo, owner of the noted Italian restaurant Vito’s in Sheffield, felt that at least some of the hardships currently being heaped on people across the country could have been avoided. “I’m not a politician or a scientist, but I could have handled this pandemic much better than the government.
Boris Johnson set his sights on herd immunity. Personally I think that was a big mistake the way it was handled. The Italian Prime Minister advised him to lock down two weeks earlier.” He says he has survived the crisis by adapting his menu to a takeaway service, like many other restaurateurs “The long lockdown is for our benefit, but it makes me feel really sad that it had to come to this. The government should have done something sooner, and that might have helped with preventing the spreading of this awful disease which has killed thousands of people. I was very scared of what was going to come, but you learn to adapt to the best of your ability. It will take time to get back to normal.” And when ‘normal’ times return? Vito’s answer when asked how he planned to celebrate could not have been more Italian. “The thing I have missed the most is

being able to see my children and granddaughter, and it will be nice to catch up on the cuddles I have missed. I also look forward to being at my restaurant and serving my customers. It has been very hard for all of us but overall, restrictions will not end soon. We will just have to celebrate like it’s 1999!!!” It’s a sentiment shared by Adrian Bagnoli, owner of the successful Cubana restaurant in Sheffield. “I’ve missed the day-to-day socialising and I’m craving for some of my favourite tapas. I’m also really looking forward to the next time we can host/listen to some of our very many talented live musicians and get to enjoy the buzz and uplifting Latino vibe. The show must go on!” Adrian regrets the fact that family life has been so affected. Restrictions meant he has had to distance himself from his elderly parents. On a wider front, he says his children have missed out on an important part of the growing-up process. But there is a brighter side to the picture. Perhaps it’s his laid-back Latin temperament, but he ends on a positive note. My 11-year-old girl Liliana has lost the experience of the final few months at primary school and my eightyear-old boy Nico has not been able to train and play football for Ecclesall Rangers under-nines, the team I also help coach and look forward to returning to after this is over. “The beautiful sunny weather has made it much more tolerable and on many occasions very enjoyable. I’ve enjoyed lots more quality time with the family and fun in the sun, particularly in the garden with the kids. I’ve also cooked a lot more and improved my culinary skills – lasagne and risotto are now my specialities. “It’s also actually been quite nice to wind down a little from hectic pace of

Another good thing is the sense of community the lockdown has created amongst the neighbours – there’s obviously been plenty of time to stop and chat to and get to know a few of them a little better.” The long lockdown was clearly not the ideal time to be planning to move. House viewings were out because of the social distancing restrictions.Yet as was the case with many others in the business community, Sheffield estate agent Nicola Spencer found ways to keep things ticking over. Video viewings and valuations took the place of the conventional variety. And while she was taking on that challenge, she used the enforced spare that has suffered time to good effect, greatly also. Break from the norm WORKING FROM HOME? THESE SEVEN SIMPLE STEPS WILL ENSURE IT’S A HAPPY AND PRODUCTIVE EXPERIENCE. ow did lockdown affect you? It’s fair to say that life has become more difficult for everyone. Coronavirus (COVID-19) has changed everything, and we have all had to adjust to new ways of living and working. If you were able to work from home, how have you adapted? There are some perks to working from home we can all enjoy (bye bye commute!), but feeling stress, boredom, anxiety and uncertainty

is also completely normal. Alongside this, many of us are worried about future job prospects and trying to look after kids as well. With your health and wellbeing at the forefront of their minds, the NHS has provided seven simple tips to help you adjust to working at home, feel more productive and take care of your mental health in these difficult times.
083 WSide June20 15/06/2020 10:37 Page 1
BUSINESS
1. Establish your own routine Without steady schedules, the lines between work and personal time can get blurred and be stressful to get right. Try to follow your normal sleep and work patterns where you can, and stay consistent. Get up at the same time, eat breakfast, and get out of your pyjamas! Try scheduling in your “commute time” and spend it exercising, reading or listening to music before logging in. Most importantly, when your workday stops, stop working. Shut down, stop checking emails and focus on your home life. And at the end of the day, try to get to bed at your usual time.
2. Make a dedicated workspace This follows on from point 1: when we live and work in the same space, it can create anxiety and stop us being able to focus. If you can, find a quiet space away from other people and distractions like the TV (or the kitchen, when you feel snacky). Get everything you need in one place, before you start work – chargers, pens, paper and anything else – and shut the door if you can. Even in a small or shared space, try to designate an area as your workspace. Lastly, get comfortable. While it might be tempting to sit on the sofa, it’s much better to sit at a desk or table. If you do not have office furniture like an adjustable chair, try using things like cushions to support you in your chair, or a box as a footrest.
3. Give yourself a break Working at home can make us feel like we have to be available all the time. But just being “present” is no use to anyone if your mental health is suffering. Making time for breaks is important to help manage feelings of stress – try to take lunch and regular screen breaks. Give yourself time to concentrate on something else so you feel more focused when you return. Even just five to ten minutes of short breaks each hour can really help your productivity too. If possible, set a time to go for a walk,
Balancing act... Many of us are having to juggle childcare as well as work responsibilities
run or bike ride for some fresh air – just make sure to stay at least two metres apart from others, in line with social distancing guidance.
4. Stay connected Feeling isolated is normal right now. But there are lots of ways to stay in touch with those who matter – boosting their mental wellbeing as well as our own. In and out of work, human interaction matters. Schedule video calls and pick up the phone instead of emailing. If you’re struggling with working at home then speak to your colleagues or manager about your concerns. And remember, your colleagues probably feel the same as you! Ask how they’re doing and whether there are ways you can support each other. Make time to socialise virtually – schedule in a digital coffee break or Friday online get-together.
you still have work to do and need quiet time to do it, and share your schedule. Similarly, set boundaries with work. It’s easier to stay logged on when your home is your office, but try to switch off from work when the day is over and enjoy time with family at home.
6. Start thinking longer term We may have to work from home for longer, so think about ways you could improve how you work while at home. If you have a garden, could you work there if the weather’s warm? Try to explore how you work with others. Are there different ways to talk online or new software you could use? Do not worry about getting everything right straightaway. It takes time to get used to juggling a new work-life balance.
5. But set boundaries
7. Be kind to yourself
Setting boundaries with other members of your household is key to mental wellbeing while working at home. You can be more flexible when working from home, so enjoy it. But it can also be difficult if there are new distractions to deal with, like children at home, who may think you are on holiday and want to spend time with you. Have a discussion about your needs, especially with family. Remind them that
Remember, this is an unusual situation and things will not feel normal! Be kind to yourself and acknowledge that you might not be as productive as you usually would be. Be realistic about what you can achieve given the circumstances, and relax when your work is done. For further health and wellbeing advice, visit www.nhs.co.uk www.sheffieldvibe.com 83

Name that tune... THE SHOW MUST GO ON AT CROSSPOOL CARE HOME. he show goes on at one Crosspool care home which is finding new ways of keeping its residents entertained due to the coronavirus outbreak. The Porterbrook, a residential, dementia and respite care home in Tapton Crescent Road, regularly had entertainers visit the home as part of its comprehensive activities programme that is offered to everyone living at the home. But the home took the early decision to close it doors to non-essential visitors in mid-March in order to create a ‘cocooning environment’ for those in its care. However, The Porterbrook has adapted the way it does things in order that its residents still get to enjoy some of the things they enjoyed before lockdown was announced. Staff invited regular visitor Lindsey Ellis to sing by positioning her at a safe distance outside of the home. The Porterbrook has a fantastic balcony area and residents were able to sit outside and

listen to the music during the sunny weather whilst enjoying lollies. Some of the staff even got into the spirit of the day and danced to some of Lindsey’s tunes. The Porterbrook care home manager Sheilagh Sweeney said: “We decided that the show must go on at The Porterbrook. Our residents used to love seeing the weekly entertainers, singers and musicians. We used to have art classes, music therapy, and even had a company come in with huskies. We also had a Bollywood night, an Elf Day, you name it and we’ve probably done it at The Porterbrook! “Since the outbreak of the virus, we’ve had to stop all non-essential visitors to the home, but we came up with another way of getting one of the home’s favourite entertainers, Lindsey Ellis, to come and sing. We have a beautiful terrace at the front of the home so we thought let’s use it in a different way. “We sat the residents outside and
Lindsay just sang up to them from below by the entrance to the home which they absolutely loved. They were so pleased to see her and listen to their favourite songs. And keeping our residents safe and making them smile is what we all strive to achieve at The Porterbrook every day. It’s why we do what we do.” The Porterbrook is well equipped to look after the needs of its residents with 44 tastefully decorated en-suite rooms, spacious lounges, piano bar, private secure courtyard, home cinema room and library. Staff have kept residents in touch with loved ones through telephone and social media. The home has rooms available for residential, dementia and respite care available now. WALKING
Embrace the outdoors IF WALKING HAS BECOME YOUR NEW NORM, HEAD FURTHER AFIELD AND TRY THIS PICTURESQUE RAMBLES. YOU COULD EVEN MEET UP WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS – JUST REMEMBER TO SOCIAL DISTANCE. estricted to just one hour of daily exercise when lockdown started, restrictions have finally begun to relax and walkers are beginning to stretch their legs further and further. Fortunately we have some fantastic walking routes right on our doorstep. Even better, many of these walks feature a splendid pub or two at journey’s end or en route. We really are spoilt for choice, but here is a nap hand of walks guaranteed to bring you some fresh air, fabulous scenery and – if restrictions allow – something cold and refreshing at the end of it. For all these walks sturdy shoes or walking boots and a waterproof are essential. Don’t take any risks of course, but don’t let a bit of drizzle put you off either. As the godfather of British rambling Alfred Wainwright said: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.”
R
Chatsworth Estate There are several lovely scenic walks in this neck of the woods and we’ve chosen a family-friendly ramble to Calton Hollow. At just over two miles most people can tackle it with ease. 1. Start at Calton Lees car park. 2. Leave the car park at the bottom righthand corner and follow the lane past the garden centre towards Calton Lees. Where the lane takes a sharp left, follow the track ahead. 3. Go through the gate (public bridleway sign) up the hill. 4. Just past the houses at the top, turn right through a gate. 5. Follow the grassy bank at the top and cross the pasture to the left of the hay barn. 6. Go through the gate in the wall. 7. Follow the track through the wood to the gate into the park. 8. Turn right and follow the park wall to the small gate into the car park.

Nine Ladies Stone Circle Stanton Moor has many prehistoric remains including The Nine Ladies Stone Circle. Legend has it that the nine ladies danced here on the Sabbath Day and were turned to stone as a punishment, along with the fiddler who stands nearby. 1. Walk down the road towards the Druid Inn and, as the road bends to the right opposite the Inn, turn sharp right up a tree-lined path, climbing up above the village houses. 2. On passing through a quarry car park, turn left and walk along the road towards Stanton for a quarter of a mile, before turning right onto a footpath with a walled entrance. 3. Continue up a rough track for a short distance to enter Stanton Moor by a high stile and continue straight ahead to reach the Cork Stone, a large upright stone with climbing footholds and handgrips added. 4. At this point as the path forks, keep to the right, and then at a path crossroads further along the moor go left for half a mile to reach The Nine Ladies Stone Circle. 5. Turn to the right from the Stone Circle and gradually descend through the trees, going to the left at a fork in the path and walk towards Earl Grey’s Tower. 6. Cross the stile by the tower and descend the steps on the other side, turn right along the path round the edge of the moor, keeping close to the fence. 7. After about three-quarters of a mile, the path descends to a minor road. 8. Here you turn right for about 200 yards and then go through a stile on the left and follow the path round the side of a hill towards Barn Farm. 9. Keep to the rear of the farm buildings, heading towards the bottom right hand corner of the field to go through a stile by a gate where you immediately turn right. 10. Continue straight ahead, shortly to join the farm drive that leads to the road back into Birchover.

WALKING
Two valleys – Rivelin and Loxley
Five Weirs Walk
If you’d like a little exercise and some stunning views, with a pub en route, try this. It’s a 5.5km circuit via the old part of Stannington and should be suitable for most able-bodied walkers. (Be aware though. The first section of the walk is very steep in places. It’s worth it for the views, but if in doubt don’t attempt it).
It’s always good to mix things up between rural and urban walking and here’s something a little different. It’s on the flat, with clear footpaths all the way, it gives a glimpse of Sheffield’s industrial heritage and there are plenty of options according to whether you want a lengthy stretch of the legs or a gentle city stroll...
1. Start at the free car park on Rails Road at Rivelin Valley (A57). Proceed up the hill on Rails Road. Soon you will see a few buildings which constitute the hamlet of Rails. Look out for a roadsign for Woodbank Road. Turn left onto it. Vehicles are very rare on this road, but keep a lookout just in case. You will pass 16thcentury Bingley Seat on your right. At this point there are some marked public footpaths leading off the road. These marked routes are pleasant enough, but don’t really lead anywhere. 2. Continuing along Woodbank Road, you’ll come to a point where the road turns right at a right angle. A roadsign for Dobb Lane leads you onto the steepest part of the ascent. When you get to the top there is a wooden seat in which to catch your breath and take in the scenery. It’s known locally as ‘The top of the world’ as it’s easy to get that feeling. Follow the skyline from your left and you will see down into Sheffield city centre. Panning right, you can make out the Hallamshire Golf Club. Further right still and there is both the university observatory and Lodge Moor Tower, which formed part of the isolation hospital many years ago. It is now occupied as a private house. To the right of these two structures is the Sportsman and the Three Merry lads, two popular pubs. The latter of these is close to the site of a military camp used for infantry training in WW1 and as a POW
90 www.sheffieldvibe.com
camp in WW2. Little trace of these remains today. 3. To resume your walk, head in the direction of the buildings nearest to you (to your left as viewed from the bench). The route turns sharply left just before you reach them. Continue past the buildings, which collectively are known as Flash Farm. When you reach the road junction after about half a mile, turn right. You are now on the high ground between the two valleys, Loxley and Rivelin. If you are lucky enough to be out on a clear day, the view across Loxley Valley are truly stunning. 4. Continuing along the road for around a mile, you will come across the 18th century Quaker Burial Ground, which is open to visitors. Continue down the hill until you reach Reynard Lane to the right. It is at this point you can elect to carry the few yards straight on into old Stannington to the Crown and Glove pub, or head for home down Reynard Lane. If you opt for the latter, follow Reynard Lane to the next junction, where you turn right. It’s all downhill from here onwards! Exercise caution along the short narrow stretch of road that takes you downhill to Bingley Lane and Rails Road, finishing at the car park.
1. This walking trail follows National Cycle Route 6 along the River Don from Sheffield city centre to Meadowhall. 2. The route starts at Lady’s Bridge in Sheffield city centre, and heads over the Cobweb Bridge, past Bailey Bridge, and through Attercliffe to Meadowhall. 3. Along the way you will pass the five weirs from which the route takes its name. It’s also a great way to see Sheffield’s industrial past and present with lots of interesting riverside buildings along the way. 4. The path is flat and well maintained so it’s a good cycle ride for families. 5. At Meadowhall the route links with the Sheffield Canal. You could return along the canal (the towpath is a bit narrow for bikes). This would turn it into the eight-mile circular walk known as The Sheffield Blue Loop. 6. For a shorter route, take a Supertram back into town. Or start your day by taking a tram to Meadowhall and do the walk in reverse. It’s just a couple of minutes on foot from Lady’s Bridge to the train or bus station.

WALKING
Curbar, Froggatt & White Edges from Curbar Gap This walk combines three gritstone edges, views on a clear day are spectacular with only a couple of steep sections. At around eight miles it’s the pick-me-up for seasoned walkers. 1. Leave the car park by the gate on the western perimeter of the car park and follow the wide path that runs parallel with Curbar Edge, which should be on your left. 2. The walking is easy and Curbar Edge becomes Froggatt Edge. The path descends gently to reach the A6245. Turn right for a short way along this road before crossing to a signed footpath on the opposite side. This path descends to a stream before climbing to a car park. 3. Continue parallel to the western side of the car park to walk beside a wall on your right. Take the signed footpath heading half left across the field to reach the main road again. Turn left and pass the Grouse Inn. Take a break now or press on and drive there at the end of the walk. 4. Just after the road bends left you will see a white gate on your left. Go through this and follow the broad track, which is followed for some way, to reach Longshaw Lodge. 5. Go past the lodge and take the first track right. This goes behind the lodge and heads south back towards the main road. You pass a couple of benches on your left and just before the car park fork left along a green track. This brings you out to the road at a busy junction. 6. Cross the road to a gate. Ignore this and locate a stile a few yards to the east. Cross this and with the fence on your right climb gently onto White Edge Moor. 7. This path undulates along White Edge for about 4km and although the edge is not so dramatic as those used earlier in the walk, the surroundings are pleasant and the views as good. Passing a trig column on your left the path descends with walled enclosures on your right. At the end of the wall turn right and follow the clear path across a stream and back to the Curbar Gap car park.
Linacre Reservoirs This is one of the nicest gentle walks in the Peak District and a real favourite for families and dog walkers. 1. It doesn’t matter which car park you have used, walk downhill on the road you arrived on and pass the woodland building. 2. Follow this path until you come to a bridge and follow the path to the right, uphill after the bridge. 3. At the top of the slope you come to a gate. Follow the path a little and go through the gap in the fence and follow the path down to the reservoirs. You then follow this path keeping the reservoirs on your right. 4. You’ll notice at the third reservoir that it is a nature reserve so please respect the area. On your way around try to notice all the wood carvings that have been done – The owl house, the old man – to name two. 5. On your way back pass the picnic tables and the middle reservoir. You’ll come to steps on the left, which take you back to the car park. www.sheffieldvibe.com 91

Do you have or know anyone with Parkinson’s? Exercise ideas for people in Sheffield At the last Branch Committee meeting, it was decided that we would have to continue running the exercise classes online for the next three months at least. The general exercise and posture class for the Foxhill members continues on a Monday with Bhanu; the Broomhill class members have been supported by Karen sending them an audiotape of the exercise for posture, and a phone call to catch up with them; Mick has started a class on a Wednesday to replace the fitness session he used to run as boxing training, and Sally still organises her Voice class for a Friday. Parkinson’s UK has released a webpage to help people stay active at home: https://www.parkinsons.org.uk/information-and-support/yourmagazine/experts/stayingactive-home-when-you-have-parkinsons This includes a link to their YouTube channel, which amongst other great information, has a set of varied 30-minute exercise videos for people to try out: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1ixQpbHed3asr5w0qe6ufxNTt1a4KpP_ If 30 minutes is too much, try a 10-minute chunk with the Power for Parkinson’s ‘Take 10’ series of fitness videos.
Finally, if you prefer paper-based exercise, the NHS website has produced a variety of gymfree exercises at: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/gymfree-workouts/ If you want advice about any of the activities mentioned above, or would be interested if the Branch set up an online class for people who need chairbased exercise (seated, or standing but holding on), please contact Bhanu via email: physiotherapy.thirdage@gmail.com, or leave a clear message on her answerphone at: 0114 2552522. MoveMore Sheffield More on exercise at home - especially for those who are not on the internet - we have enclosed the calendar for MoveMore month. If you don’t really know how to start moving about more - this has daily suggestions. For those on the internet, the calendar can be found on the Move More Sheffield FaceBook home page: https://www.facebook.com/movemoresheffield/
For more information about support in Sheffield call the Branch Secretary, Val Heap on 0114 262 0468. She can also put you in touch with professionals who can discuss other Parkinson’s-specific classes and events. Visit the website at: www.parkinsons.org.uk/sheffield

MOTORING
Hit the road in style...
Fiat 500
AS LONG AS IT’S ITALIAN STYLE. THESE HEAD-TURNERS ARE THE EPITOME OF COOL – AND PERFECT FOR A SUMMER DRIVE. ou can have any colour you like – as long as it’s red. Of course, we’ve twisted his words somewhat, but Henry Ford would never have understood modern Italian cars. Driving is a passion in Italy and it’s doubtful whether old Henry had much of that. He’ll go down in bunk (sorry, history) as being about as exciting as having your ears syringed. Our trio of cars featured this month are on the face of it very, very different. But to drive any of them lifts the spirits like the hit from a doppio espresso. The red is also a reminder that the cars share the same bloodline. They should do. All three are made by the same people, namely Fiat Chrysler. The parent company can be proud of its newborn, the all-electric version of the iconic Fiat 500. It’s a first for Fiat and a first for Fiat Chrysler, come to that. With a promised 199-mile range, the
Y
youngster is perfectly poised to make inroads in the ever-growing electric car market. If you have never driven a 500, you really should. The first impression is that it is small and it takes a while to overcome the compulsion to get out of the car to change gear. The other thing you will notice is that other drivers are looking at you quizzically. It’s a common misperception that Fiat Cinquecentos are driven only by girls called Emma or Emily, who are aged 17/18 and currently deciding whether to have a gap year or go straight to uni. This impression can be tested by a simple drive down Ecclesall Road most Saturdays. The young ladies concerned may wish to know that orders are now being taken for a special convertible model of the electric wonder, named La Prima.Yours for £29,000. Of course, you can buy a 500 for far less than that.
Whichever model you choose, you’ll soon fall for the little fella. Driving this car puts a smile on your face. My smile would be about as wide as Park Square roundabout if I were ever to get my mitts on our next choice. The Ferrari SF90 Stradale is another first. It’s certainly the first hybrid car to be made by Maranello, something that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago. It’s also the first to be equipped with four-wheel drive. And it happens to be the most powerful Ferrari ever. Its V8 engine and accompanying electric motor combine to deliver 1,000 bhp.Yes, you read it right. A thousand. A grand. That dizzying power output hurls it to 60 from standstill in a mere 2.5 seconds. But you’re not interested in that. In fact I doubt you’ve listened to a word I’ve said. No, you just need to look at the car to see why wealthy buyers are prepared to pay handsome premiums over list price in order to secure one.

MOTORING
The car is visually perfect, from every angle. I would sit for hours just looking at it. If I actually owned one, I’d talk to it as well. So tear your eyes from the page and we’ll finish with a car from a great Italian marque, which sits somewhere in the middle of the two extremes of fun car and supercar. But the new Alfa Romeo Giulia is far from being a middle-of-the-road family saloon. Instead it’s a fire-breathing beast of a car thanks to its 2.9-litre V6 biturbo engine. That little assortment give it a power output of well in excess of 500bhp. Add to that an eight-speed auto transmission designed for lightning-fast gear changes and it becomes a serious performance car. Little wonder then that this is the car to restore Alfa’s glory days. Just make sure it’s red.
NEWS The Four factor MINI’s family-friendly Countryman has been updated for 2020 with the standout model being the Plug-In Hybrid ALL4. Two petrol and one diesel engine will complete the range. The Plug-In Hybrid ALL4 combines efficiency and hybrid-specific allwheel-drive with the option of pure electric driving. The system manages a precisely controlled interaction between the 3-cylinder petrol engine transmitting its power to the front wheels with an electric synchronous motor that acts on the rear wheels. Together, the two units produce a system output of 162 kW/220hp. Other highlights of the new model include a newly designed radiator grille, LED headlamps and foglamps as standard, LED rear lights in a new design, new body finishes, new light alloy wheels, new digital dash display and 5-inch colour screen as standard and a new range of leather trims and interior surfaces. Cooper and Cooper S variants will be both available with prices starting from £23,500.
Alfa Romeo Giulia
Black is the new black The Volkswagen T-Roc has been given an added dose of style with the introduction of a new Black Edition trim level, adding black-coloured trim and features to the interior and exterior of the model, as well as £2,000-worth of additional equipment. Outside you’ll find a sleek black finish to its grille, door mirrors, roof rails and exhaust pipes as well as 18-inch Arlo Black alloy wheels and LED headlights. Inside the theme continues with Piano Black dashpads, roof lining, leatherwrapped gearshift knob and multifunction sports steering wheel with contrasting grey stitching. The T-Roc Black Edition starts at £23,750 RRP OTR.
Electric dream BMW’s classy 5-Series is looking particularly good of late thanks to a new look, an interior brimming with refinements, cutting-edge innovations and even greater efficiencies, as most models now feature mild-hybrid technology. Saloon and Touring models will have a 48V startergenerator that will be rolled out to all models with a four or six-cylinder engine, except PHEV and M550i xDrive models. Inside, new interior features include a larger 12.3” Central Information Display powered by the latest Operating System 7.0, including BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant and Smartphone Integration. Three trim levels will be offered from its July launch – SE, M Sport and M Sport Edition – with prices starting from £37,480. www.sheffieldvibe.com 95
