Clearly better IN A CONFUSING MARKETPLACE, LET THE MORTGAGE ADVICE BUREAU HELP YOU FIND THE BEST POSSIBLE DEAL. he housing and mortgage market can be a confusing and uncertain place for home buyers – especially in recent years. Comparison sites can be helpful when selecting a mortgage, but often there are a lot of details that need clarifying before you feel confident enough to go ahead. Now, there is a new name on the Sheffield property scene, with local experts dedicated to helping you find the best, cheapest mortgages available. Mortgage Advice Bureau is an expert mortgage broker that has access to over 90 UK lenders. Their strong relationships with lenders means they have access to the latest deals available including deals that may not be available through high street lenders. The business has won over 50 awards in the last five years alone and with over 900 advisers across the UK, arranging approximately £8 billion of mortgages per annum, you can rest assured that you are in safe hands. With a new branch on Ecclesall Road, Sheffield residents will be able to have a faceto-face discussion about which deals best suit their needs. Mortgage advisors, Scott Woodward and David Blunden, chose the location for their office because it is ideally located near major high street banks and estate agents, as well as some of the most sought after properties around. “We’ve been part of the Mortgage Advice

T

Bureau network for some time,” says David. “Scott and I trained together and know the area well, as we have both lived and worked locally. We felt that the location of the shop was too good to miss out on, as it puts us right in the centre of everything, making it easy for customers to find us.” The branch opened earlier this month with a launch party. Scott and David would like to thank all their guests for making the event a success, with many local businesses including Ian and David from Haus, Morfitt Smith, Taylor & Emmet, Keeble Hawson and HSBC in attendance. Scott and David became a partnership in 2004 and have backgrounds in the new-build mortgage market. Having lived and worked in the area for many years they feel they are experts on the Sheffield housing scene. At the Mortgage Advice Bureau, they will take clients through the mortgage process from start to finish, by doing all the research required, going through all their options and even processing the mortgage on their behalf. They are expert brokers, who also offer insurance protection advice, giving you complete peace of mind. “It’s taken a lot of time and work to get the premises ready for our launch, but the results really are worth it,” adds Scott. “We are now equipped with an excellent environment in which to meet with clients including a reception area, meeting rooms and office space. “We are now in an ideal position to work

with customers from across the region at all stages of the property journey, from first time buyers and home movers through buy to let landlords.” Though the property ladder can be difficult to climb, David reassures us that things are going in the right direction. “The mortgage market is getting better. There are a lot more options out there now, with many lender’s offering deals that are much more flexible.” Going forward, David and Scott are looking into the rapid expansion of the business by recruiting a new team. If you are an ambitious mortgage or mortgage protection advisor, get in touch today. David and Scott are also planning some networking events in the next few months, where several professionals will be available to discuss ideas and opportunities. Whether you are a first-time buyer or have your foot firmly on the property ladder, take the stress out of shopping around for the right mortgage with Mortgage Advice Bureau.

DESIGNER KITCHEN DIRECT

Designer Kitchen Direct FINEST QUALITY DESIGNER KITCHENS AT UNBEATABLE PRICES. his year, Designer Kitchen Direct (DKD) opened a new showroom on Junction Road Sheffield, just above Hunters Bar roundabout. Dawn Rayner, managing director, has 25 years experience in the business and has teamed up with her daughter-in-law, Mary Major, who identified a need for bespoke designer kitchens at affordable prices to all. Mary has a degree in interior architecture and for the past 13 years has been designing kitchens suited perfectly to the people who will use them. “I need to know how people live and use their kitchen, their main priorities and how they use their space in the home,” says Mary.

T

The Designer Kitchen Direct team (L-R): Mary, Lauren, Dawn and Leah 20 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

“With this greater level of understanding I can design by function as well as aesthetics.” Each kitchen is bespoke which means you can have yours in any style or colour you want – traditional solid wood, painted, contemporary Italian gloss, or matt finish. Each range has a wide choice of accessories; beautiful handles, clever storage solutions, and stunning worktop finishes for a unique look. Mary adds: “Our prices beat everyone else for this level of quality and finish. All our cabinets and drawers will stand the test of time, with 18mm solid backs and sides to hold them square and provide a firm base for high quality solid doors.” If you need any building work, to maximise or improve your space, DKD also have their own building team who can assess, quote and complete the preparation work in readiness for your new kitchen. Mary says: “Take the first step in creating your dream kitchen by calling into our showroom, or telephone us to book one of our designers for a free survey. They will then add life and inspiration to your ideas by creating a 3D walkthrough, assisting you in choosing colours, style and layout. “We will work out cost options for your new kitchen, and can work within any budget, whilst giving the very best quality and finish. You are sure to be inspired by our showroom and delighted with the prices.”

Another satisfied customer: Helen Little, Derbyshire “Designer Kitchen Direct are simply the best. We are so grateful for the time and care they took over our design, which resulted in an absolutely stunning kitchen. They are so imaginative and practical too. It was the best design we had seen, by far. “Our kitchen is truly unique, superb quality throughout, and the price was very fair and reasonable and came well within our budget. We will never go anywhere else for our kitchens and bedrooms in the future. “A huge thanks to all at DKD.”

Hand-built for a lifetime IT’S THE CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL THAT MAKES REVIVAL BEDS SO SPECIAL. here’s something really comforting about ordering a handmade bed direct from the craftsmen that built it. You can almost smell the wood shavings and feel the love and attention that’s gone into every tiny detail. The craftsmen at Retford-based Revival Beds build handmade beds the way they used to be built. It all began back in 1983 when a pair of cabinet makers who ran a small

T

business restoring antique furniture found they were unable to source traditional beds to suit the modern preference for wider beds. So they decided to build the beds themselves. Today Revival Beds offer a collection of handmade beds that reflect the very best in the art of traditional British craftsmanship and values. Yet, because each bed is built to order, customers can specify any size they wish – from standard widths (up to 8 foot) through to custom-built sizes. The range is impressive – from Gallicinspired sleigh beds to traditional beds plus a majestic collection of four-posters, each with its own distinct personality. Beds can be personalised with a choice of natural wood and painted finishes. Or, as in the case of the 150-200-year aged Oak Collection, simply waxed to bring out the character of the wood. Revival isn’t just about beds; the company

also offers an extensive range of coordinating bedroom furniture, handcrafted to the same exacting standards. To complete the picture, there’s a beautiful collection of quality bedding and British-made mattresses. Each bed is fully guaranteed, and delivery and installation is free. Customers can order from Revival’s brochure or visit the showroom to see a range of beds, furniture and options. Showroom tours also include a voucher to spend on coffee and cake at the local bistro afterwards!

To arrange a visit or request a brochure simply call 01777 869 669 or visit www.revivalbeds.co.uk.

LE MERIDIEN ST JULIANS MAKES A FANTASTIC BASE FOR EXPLORING THE CHARMS OF BALLUTA – A COOL OASIS ON A BUZZING ISLAND.

Maltese marvel he melodic chimes of the Carmelite Church bells in Balluta echo across the bay as a fresh breeze caresses the square, offering a reprieve from the summer sun. The triangular Balluta Square, wedged between Sliema and Paceville, offers a fantastic location to stop and relax in the afternoon, be it after a day of activities on jeeps, quads, bikes, segways or after savouring the fine and relatively unknown wines at one of many vineyards. You can enjoy Balluta Square after a day of meetings, or after exploring the wonderful historical towns and cities on foot. This stop could also be arranged after a day spent cruising at sea along the beautiful blue lagoon and inlets of Comino on a catamaran, a yacht or a gullet, which would leave you pleasantly fulfilled, or after sailing along some of the most magnificent fortifications of Valletta, which date back 450 years. In the evenings, the area doubles up as a buzzing hangout for the trendy crowd seeking a refreshing aperitif after work. Named after ballut, the Maltese name for an oak tree, the square is ‘guarded’ by the majestic Balluta Buildings – the finest example of art nouveau on the islands – and the Le Meridien St Julian’s Hotel & Spa, which is built on the grounds of the 19th century Villa Cassar Torregiani. The hotel has been instrumental in injecting life to the area. And if you are seeking to place your meeting or incentive in Malta, you should consider checking into this boutique five-star hotel that is within walking distance of the

T

island’s nightlife, yet wedged among a picturesque bay and a selection of bars and restaurants for your entertainment. Apart from boasting an award-winning spa to revive your weary bodies and quieten your over-stimulated minds, the newly appointed general manager, Alex Incorvaja, has roped in a dynamic food and beverage team to ensure your tastebuds also get treated to a feast of flavours at Scirocco Restaurant and a guaranteed memorable culinary experience at Taro, the newly minted, au courant, bistro-style restaurant. If you don’t wish to stray far from the hotel grounds, then Alpine Sterling’s team will be on hand to suggest a number of fine choices where to dine; favourites include The Villa, which offers an exquisite experience teamed with a picture-postcard view, or the more informal U Bistrot for a glass of wine and a quick bite. Beyond the hotel, make sure you discover the little French patisserie that bakes mouthwatering ham and cheese croissants, quiches, delicious pastries and cakes, which you

can enjoy in the square. Lining the bay are also a few of Malta’s popular restaurants. For a fine dining experience, visit the family-run Barracuda Restaurant, which is perched right over the bay atop its more family-oriented pizzeria, Piccolo Padre; or if you want Mediterranean cuisine, book a place at the unassuming Wigi’s Kitchen. These are all places which we are sure you will enjoy. A bit further up is the legendary City of London pub, which opened during World War 1 in 1914, where you can sample a choice of the island’s best beers; or if you’re after something hip in terms of cuisine or a refreshing cocktail and live music visit the contemporary Electro Lobster Project, which is tucked beneath Balluta Buildings. And, finally, if you just wish to enjoy a quiet night, simply order room service, pop open a bottle of wine and sit on your terrace to watch the sun set over the bay as it washes the buildings’ limestone with an orange hue. This is just part of the experience which we would love to share with you, an authentic, truly Maltese experience in one of the most eclectic locations that Malta has to offer. Le Meridien St Julian’s and its surrounding locations are just three hours away from most UK airports. Positive outlook WITH A NEW SHOWROOM AND AWARDS RECOGNITION, IT’S A BUSY TIME FOR TIMBER WINDOWS OF SHEFFIELD BY PRESTIGE WINDOW SYSTEMS.

Best Window Installations Company 2016 UK & BUILD Innovation Award in Timber Window Systems hen achieving the above award in August 2016, Prestige Window Systems had recently opened their second showroom, moving to their new location Timber Windows of Sheffield on Ecclesall Road in June 2016. Originally working from a showroom and head office in the south of Sheffield, this bustling Ecclesall area retains a village feel and was ideally suited to their need for a more prominent location. Bev Hales, who offers design advice when visiting clients in their homes, explained: “Here at Prestige Window Systems we aim to provide a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, quality products and support to clients. Whether clients simply need advice that they can take with them to make a more informed decision elsewhere, or whether they use us as their installation partner, our team work hard to be the best at everything they do, and it shows. “Central to our quality focus are our products. Our made-to-measure window and

W

door systems are manufactured from multilayered timber sourced from sustainable European resources. During manufacture, they will be pre-glazed and multi-point locking is fitted prior to delivery. The frames are then painted with a Swedish microporous paint system which allows the timber to breathe and gives the frames a 30-year guarantee against rot and fungal infection. The care and detail that goes into manufacture provides us with an excellent, sustainable product which forms a solid foundation for our installations. “Our main challenge has been to allow the company to grow, whilst maintaining the level of quality that we are renowned for. Every job is a unique challenge and it takes time to

find someone with the fitting and technical skills needed to meet our high standards. Luckily for us, we have a great team of guys who enjoy the experience of working with clients who appreciate a skilled installation. There is a lot of job satisfaction in our work and we all love to hear the feedback we get from our clients once a project is completed.” You can check out Prestige Window Systems’ reviews at the link below and, whenever you’re ready, they are around to help without pressure or obligation: https://www.reviews.co.uk/companyreviews/store/prestige-window-systems Timber Windows of Sheffield by Prestige Window Systems 918 Ecclesall Road Sheffield, S11 8TR Call 0114 399 9825 or drop in for a brochure.

Signature Loxley Park

The best of both worlds KATH ENJOYS A BUSY SOCIAL LIFE AT SIGNATURE LOXLEY PARK WHERE THERE’S CARE IF SHE NEEDS IT AND INDEPENDENCE IF SHE DOESN’T. ath Cottingham has always been a socialite. Ever-since her daughter was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome (a rare medical condition), she has harnessed her connections to raise money for this and many other charitable causes. “I’m still well-known in Sheffield for my fundraising,” she says. “People used to see me with my big handbag and say, ‘Kath’s here with her raffle tickets again!’” Kath has embraced life at Signature and takes an active role in the community. She lives in the independent living side of Loxley Park and plans on getting more involved with events there. She still drives, has a busy social life and is fiercely independent, so many of her friends were surprised when she moved. “I chose to move here because I can enjoy the best of both worlds,” says Kath. “The staff are here to help, but also put on events and really get into it. We celebrated the Queen’s birthday, Burns Night, St Patrick’s Day and so much more. They don’t do things by halves!” Kath is a “glass half full person” and her positive attitude has helped her through the hard times and to fully appreciate the good. Her mother died when she was two, whilst her father died when she was eleven. She was brought up by her aunt and uncle, but felt lucky to be brought up in a loving home. Kath married in 1957, then spent three years in Kenya. She returned to England, before the birth of her two children Michelle and Nigel. At 30, Kath had her first child, Michelle. Though Michelle died at the age of 37 of kidney failure, Kath treasures every moment. “I asked the consultant what the lifespan was. He said, ‘late teens’ so I said, “forget it! She’s staying

K

with me!’ She had a good life. She’d travel the world with us and had a great sense of humour.” Then at 35, Kath got into ice dancing. She has lived in Fulwood most her life and used to practice at the old ice skating rink on Queens Road. It was only in her 70s that problems with her knees prevented her from continuing the hobby. However, Kath says that some of her fondest memories are from her later years. “2003 didn’t start well, but around my 70th birthday in October things changed. First, I flew to New York and returned three days later on Concord. After one day back in the UK, I flew with my son, Nigel, to Las Vegas for a week. When I returned, there was a surprise birthday party organised for me at the Canton Orchard.” Kath’s other most memorable moments include a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings in Egypt for her 75th birthday. Though jet-setting and thrill-seeking have given Kath some brilliant memories, life is about the people you share them with. “One of my highlights was when Nigel came back for my 80th birthday. His son, Ned had just been born so I didn’t expect it. It was lovely.” Kath continues to live a full life at Signature. She has been an active member of her local floral club (part of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies) for 35 years and continues to go to meetings and events. These are a few memories of a full and generally happy life so far…

Mount St Mary’s College Mount St Mary’s College and its preparatory school Barlborough Hall offer a first class independent education to boys and girls from nursery to sixth form. The school celebrated its 175th anniversary last year, and continues a tradition of providing a Catholic education in the Jesuit tradition in the heart of England. Set in beautiful private grounds in a village location, yet just minutes from Junction 30 of the M1 and within easy reach of south Yorkshire and north east Derbyshire. Plus, a fleet of ten school minibuses ferry pupils to and from areas including Sheffield, Worksop, Matlock, Chesterfield and Mansfield. Grindleford Primary Just 15 minutes from west Sheffield, in beautiful Peak landscape, nestles a well-kept secret: Grindleford Primary. This small school attracts Sheffield and Peak families alike every year with its ‘village school’ ethos, where dedicated teachers nurture every child individually. Parents looking for both academic success and a wealth of enriching experiences find Grindleford’s mix particularly appealing: it’s not every week your child gets to meet a world-class athlete or perform in a choir of thousands – and then spend the afternoon in an idyllic Forest School in the heart of National Trust woodland. The school’s Ofsted report sums it up: “Pupils leave this school as well-rounded, mature youngsters who have been very well-prepared for the next stage in their lives”. Headteacher Mrs Hill prefers her own mantra: “The pupils here are as proud of their school as we are of them. Why not pay us a visit and see for yourself?”

OLD SCHOOL HOUSE Over the last 26 years The Old School House has forged a reputation as a leader in childcare provision. Its extended hours and wraparound care, plus the plethora of activities on offer, match the needs of busy parents seeking a stimulating and loving environment for their children. Nursery opening hours are from 7.30am to 6.30pm, for children from three months to school age, in addition to providing breakfast, after school, holiday and French clubs for children up to 11 years of age. If you think your child could benefit from spending the pre-school years at one of The Old School House’s two nurseries, contact them now to arrange a visit. Benty Lane, Crosspool, Sheffield. Four girls on one educational journey… meet the stars of Westbourne School’s own film drama. Isla Mirfin, sisters Eleanor and Evie Reynolds and Head Girl Abi Heywood

Coveted awards WESTBOURNE SCHOLARSHIPS TAKE CENTRE STAGE t Westbourne School – the only co-educational independent school in Sheffield offering first class education to girls and boys from the age of 3 to 16 – it’s not just about celebrating and nurturing excellence, it’s about sharing it. Every year Westbourne offers scholarships to all Year 6 children in the area for entry into their senior school (Year 7) in the September of the same year. Scholarships – reduced fee places – are offered in five categories: Academic, Music, Sport, AllRounder and the new category of Drama and Performing Arts. Candidates for this coveted award have increased year on year and Westbourne was delighted with the number of children who applied in 2017 and the demonstrable talent they brought with them. Entry into Westbourne School is not dependent on scholarship examinations as the school prides itself in being an academically non-selective school. It’s quite fitting that in the same year as Drama and Performing Arts has been included to the Scholarship categories that Westbourne is celebrating Head Girl Abi Heywood receiving a top scholarship in Drama for sixth form study at Sedbergh School in Cumbria.

A

“Westbourne is not just about celebrating and nurturing excellence it is also about sharing it through its scholarship awards…”

Westbourne is proud of its co-educational status

Abi joined Westbourne from neighbouring Ashdell in 2012 following her sister Jess, who joined in 2010. Both girls have enjoyed success both academically and theatrically. Girls seem to thrive particularly well at Westbourne. Another former Head Girl, Lizzie Peck, is now studying at Oxford after spending 12 years at Westbourne. So, when it came to creating a new film promoting the school, it was decided to tell the story of just one girl’s progress. But to bring the story to life, it actually took the talent of four pupils who between them take the heroine through every phase of school life, from her first day in PreSchool through to GCSEs. “We are so pleased with what we have achieved with this film,” said Westbourne Headmaster John Hicks. “Many congratulations to our four young stars and thank you to everyone involved”.” To see the film visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFr78s2KLro

Westbourne School is proud of its coeducational status and firmly believes that the benefits of mixed classes can be seen in the achievements of all its pupils. Westbourne has proven experience that girls and boys can and do flourish in a mixed environment. It believes that co-education helps both girls and boys to have a better understanding of each other and develops the whole child and their emotional intelligence – children mix socially in the world beyond the classroom and Westbourne believes they should be able to do so in school time too. Why not go along to the Open Morning on Thursday 9 March? See for yourself just how the successful environment at Westbourne School can help your son or daughter develop and succeed, both academically and personally. ENTERTAINMENT

A hero’s welcome FRESH FROM HIS SUPER APPEARANCE AT MARVEL UNIVERSE LIVE, ‘IRON MAN’ ANTONIO JACKSON SPEAKS TO HANNAH SANDERS. t’s not every day you get to interview Iron Man. With his super suits, genius level intellect and witty repartee, you can’t help but have a love/hate relationship with Tony Stark. The millionaire philanthropist is played by Antonio Jackson in the Marvel Universe Live! tour, which came to Sheffield Arena recently. Feld Entertainment excel in bringing to life some of the most well-known heroes and fearsome villains from X-Men and The Avengers in an arena stunt spectacular. And there’s no shortage of film-inspired special effects, leaving the audience feeling like they’re the ones inside the famous Iron Man suit.

I

When you auditioned, did you pick your character?

No. The original audition choreography was for Wolverine and Spider-Man. When you get the job they give you a few characters they think would suit you and eventually casting decide where they want you based on your size, skills, physique and movements. Were you happy when you found out you’d be playing Iron Man? 54 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

I was really excited because straight away I thought that’s a character I want to play. What I like about Iron Man is his background and how he turned his life around. What’s the most challenging thing about this role?

In the show I have the longest fight scene, with a really hot and heavy suit on too. Even though I’m already in shape, I have to work that bit harder in training to make sure I keep my stamina and strength up throughout the performance. What is your favourite stunt?

I grew up watching Jackie Chan and this played a big part in me liking any stunts involving tricking. Tricking is anything that involves flips, twists and kicks. It grabs my attention straight away and in my opinion, looks incredible. I can imagine training sometimes seems like an impossible task, were there times you wanted to give up?

Although sometimes it’s difficult, I’ve always had the mind set of never giving up. When you choose this line of work it’s a full commitment

– you have to live and breathe stunt performing. When I first started training at 22, I couldn’t do flips but now I can do extreme acrobatic stunts in front of thousands of people – it’s all about keeping a positive mentality. Did the show meet expectations, not just for the audience but for yourself too?

It was something that has never been done before, with its own storyline too. It’s more like a movie in front of your face than a show, full of pyrotechnics, explosions, fight scenes and motorcycle stunts. So the audience were blown away and left after being thoroughly entertained. The build up to the Hulk revealing himself was the one thing to keep an eye out for. This was a crowd pleaser – for the first hour we tease the audience and then when he finally transforms it leaves them wowed. Every time I talk to people after the show, they always tell me that it isn’t what they expected, in fact it’s something truly amazing. The Marvel Universe Live! tour is currently on tour in the UK and Europe. Find out more here www.marveluniverselive.com

LEAVING A LEGACY TO SHEFFIELD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL WILL HELP A CHILD’S LIFE – IT REALLY IS A GIFT OF LIFE. heffield Children’s Hospital is one of four stand-alone specialist children’s hospitals in the UK and provides world-class care for children all over Yorkshire and beyond. The skill of staff and the courage of patients and their families helps to make it an incredible place – but at The Children’s Hospital Charity, we’ll never stop striving to make it better. There are so many ways in which you can support the charity; one of the most significant ways you can help is leaving a gift in your will or create a will with Irwin Mitchell who will offer a discount when you quote The Children’s Hospital Charity, as well as make an instant donation to the charity. For 17-year-old Ebony Taylor, an incredibly generous gift, left by Sheffield local Betty in her will, has made all the difference to her treatment. Ebony, from Doncaster, has been treated at the hospital for epilepsy since 2012 and needs regular scans to monitor the activity in her brain. She was the first patient to benefit from a fully digital intraoperative 3T MRI scanner, partially funded by a £845,273 donation made by Betty. When Betty passed away she wanted to remember the hospital – a cause she had

S

championed all her life – in her estate. Her staggering once in a lifetime gift means that patients like Ebony will benefit from the most up to date technology possible and can get better in an environment designed with them in mind. Every penny donated through a legacy really does make a difference. Legacies also help to fund up to £250,000 of research into the prevention and cure of childhood illnesses and disease every single year. One of these projects developed a pioneering screening programme which detects rare life-threatening diseases in babies. Thanks to a successful pilot study leg by Sheffield Children’s Hospital, all new-born babies in England will be screened for four additional rare but serious conditions. The early detection and treatment of these conditions helps to give children the best possible start in life. Leaving a legacy through your will could make a life-saving difference for the children in our care – it really is the gift of life. To find out how to make a legacy donation or how you can create a discounted will through our partners Irwin Mitchell, contact support@tchc.org.uk.

LEAVE A LASTING LEGACY

A kind-hearted widow Betty, left a staggering once in a lifetime £845,273 to The Children’s Hospital Charity in her Will. Her legacy helped fund a £2.3million state-of-the art MRI scanner which will save children’s lives with neurological conditions for years to come. ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS ‘I CHANGED MY WHOLE LIFE WITH THE HELP OF G&M HEALTHCARE’, SAYS KERRY HARRIS WHO SHED AN AMAZING SEVEN STONE WITH THEIR HELP. f you had told me at the beginning of the year that 2016 would be the year I lost weight, I wouldn't have believed you.” Kerry Harris had struggled with body and self-confidence issues for many years, often yo-yo dieting and attempting to lose weight but always going back to old habits. But when the strains of carrying the extra weight began to affect her family life, it became impossible to ignore. “Before I started Alevere, I hated my body. My weight was beginning to affect my confidence and was making me feel very unhappy in all aspects of my life. I stopped doing activities I loved, spending time with my children and avoided situations where I felt my weight would be judged.” Stepping on the scales left Kerry feeling low, but it also gave her the determination she needed to tackle her weight problem head on. “I hadn’t weighed myself for years. I imagined I would weigh about 13-14 stone, so when the scales told me I was 17st 6.5lbs I couldn’t believe it. “I had seen advertisements for G&M Healthcare with Alevere and decided I was going to give it a try. I was so sceptical to begin with, since I had always been trying to lose weight - I remembered how exhausting it was trying to find the perfect diet plan or weight loss ‘trick’.” Combining high quality, flavoursome foods and state of the art ultrasound technology, it was the maintenance stage of the Alevere programme that Kerry found most difficult. But, under strict medial supervision, she soon realised how important it was to enabling her to manage her weight long term. “The fast rate of weight loss kept me motivated and the therapy sessions gave me the support I needed to stay on track and help me understand more about my relationship with food.” So far, Kerry has lost over seven stone and uses her own weight loss as a tool to spur herself on. “As the weight came off, I could not believe how good I felt and how different I looked. I lost almost seven stone in 21 weeks and I feel amazing. “Seeing the weight come off gave me

“ I

encouragement to keep going and I now feel that I know how to eat properly. The plan has taught me to think about what I am putting into my body.” Like everyone, Kerry has hit the occasional rut but she says she tries to combat it by switching up her workout routine. "My weight is no longer ruling my life. Before, I let the weight define me and my boundaries. Now, I don't. I make the rules. "I've learned to be patient about the rest of the weight loss," and she reminds others to do the same. "Instead of always being down on yourself for how much more you have to go, look back at all you've already done." Kerry is such a convert to the goals and outcomes of the programme that she has now joined G & M Healthcare as a weight loss therapist, helping to motivate others along their weight loss journeys.

“All the staff at the clinic were very caring and professional and I wanted to give something back to the programme. It has really helped me and I’m so grateful. “It’s great to see others achieving their goals.” G&M Healthcare is a GP-led clinic in Broomhill, Sheffield. The experts at G&M Healthcare are dedicated to helping people look their best and, with a series of complementary cosmetic treatments on offer, alongside Alevere, clients are truly spoilt for choice. Think big, think bike! TONY GIBB OF FULL GAS BIKES SAYS THE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE IS A MASSIVE EVENT TO LOOK FORWARD TO. ony Gibb was a professional cyclist for 15 years, winning world and national titles, and is now a commentator and presenter for Eurosport, as well as owner of Full Gas Bikes and Full Gas Cycling events. He says the Tour de Yorkshire is coming, and you’re probably not ready! He said: “I was lucky enough to see the Tour de France in Yorkshire first-hand. “I was hosting a hospitality event and when I was first asked to do it in March, one of the comments was: ‘we will book your hotel nearer the time’. I politely suggested they might want to get on that sooner rather than later! “I’ve also been lucky enough to watch the tour’s final day in Paris on several occasions, sometimes just at the side of the road. I’ve worked on it in various guises and had a few cheeky VIP trips, so I have seen first-hand the sheer size of the operation. “The Tour de Yorkshire is coming, and it

finishes on your doorstep, right outside our front door at Fox Valley. Don’t think this is going to be some watered-down version of the French race. Although only in its third year, this legacy event is a favourite of the pros. It’s one of the hardest short-stage races on the calendar and features the hardest climbs in Yorkshire – and most of them at that. “A bike race is coming, what’s the big deal? Well, about 180 pro cyclists, 60 team cars, 20 coaches and mechanics’ trucks – do you want me to start on the event organisation, the press, the motorbike outriders, police, two helicopters, a plane? This event is going to be brilliant for Sheffield, Stocksbridge and the surrounding area. Oh, and I forgot to mention the sportive, the amateur support ride for all-comers, on the morning of the final stage – you can add another 5,000 riders, friends, family, cars… “Are you getting a feel for the scale of this thing? Trust me, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

Way of the Warrior NEW HELP FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON’S AS NEW EXERCISE PROGRAMME COMES TO SHEFFIELD AND BRAMALL LANE. D Warrior a unique programme of exercise to help people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s is now in Sheffield. Two physiotherapists from the Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic, Karen Hodgson and Bhanu Ramaswamy, have become instructors in the PD Warrior concept and are now unique in the region for offering this programme Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disorder that affects approximately 1 in every 500 people in the UK. The main symptoms of Parkinson's are tremor, rigidity and slowness of movement. Symptoms and the speed at which the condition develops will differ from one person to the next. Currently there is no cure for Parkinson’s but treatment is through medication and therapy including physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy. Traditional physiotherapy has been aimed at people who have had Parkinson’s for a length of time and is geared to treating the symptoms and ongoing problems. The PD Warrior programme has been developed in Australia by two physiotherapists, for people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s. This concept uses an exercise philosophy designed to help slow Parkinson’s, based on the latest evidence that high intensity exercise, done early on after diagnosis is medicine. The proactive approach to exercise has been shown to improve quality of life. It is important not to wait for symptoms to impact on daily life before taking up the correct exercise at an early stage of Parkinson’s. PD Warrior is aimed at those people who have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s for three years or less, who are fit and active and who are highly motivated. The first group of Warriors have completed their initial ten week exercise plan and have achieved some good results. Due to the success of this the team are rolling the programme out with the help of Sheffield United Football Club. One of the first Sheffield Warriors is Billy McEwan, who will be known to many people as a former manager of Sheffield United from 1986-1988. Billy was diagnosed with Parkinson’s three years ago and has been working with the clinic team on the Warrior programme since October. Billy has noticed good improvements in his condition and so was keen to help get Sheffield United involved. The exercise classes are starting at Bramall Lane on 13 February 2017.

attlesnakes, the debut album by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, became an instant student bedsit classic in 1984. The band lasted three albums and most of the eighties, since then Cole has carved out a niche as a solo performer, relocating to America, touring the world and recording several albums of wry, literate, tuneful songs. He will be in Sheffield later this month with a set list concentrating on the Commotions era plus his early solo works, after the release of a retrospective box set Lloyd Cole and the Commotions Collected Recordings 1983-1989 brought an upsurge in interest. Cole grew up in Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire where he played junior golf to a high standard (his parents worked at a local club) and dreamed of emulating his musical heroes by appearing on Top Of The Pops (David Bowie, Roxy Music and T Rex were all major influences). He still plays golf; in fact he’s regularly namechecked, alongside Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper, as one of the keenest and best golfing musicians in the world Meanwhile the dream of appearing on TOTP came true more than once. Singles like Perfect Skin, Forest Fire, Lost Weekend and Jennifer She Said meant Cole’s distinctive, chiselled jaw and floppy fringe were seen on TV a lot. These days home is Massachusetts, with wife Elizabeth and sons William and Frank. He’s not normally a ‘nostalgia act’, in fact his most recent recorded output revealed a passion for experimental electronic instrumentals... so how does he feel, looking back over his early music?

LLOYD COLE TELLS CHRIS WILSON ABOUT THE THRILL OF APPEARING ON TOP OF THE POPS, HEAVY DRINKING IN NEW YORK AND GETTING INTO SHEFFIELD NIGHTCLUBS WITHOUT PAYING.

COMEDY Russell Howard: Round The World Tour 7 April Sheffield Arena, Broughton Lane, Sheffield, S9 2DF www.sheffieldarena.co.uk Tickets from £26.78 Critically acclaimed “Comedy Superstar” (Time Out), one of the best-selling acts in British stand-up, and host of the smash hit TV show Russell Howard’s Good News, Russell Howard returns to the live stage for the first time in three years with his biggest global tour to date, Round The World.

“Mostly I’m very happy with all of it...we had pretty vigilant editorial standards. The first Top Of The Pops appearance was the happiest I’d been up to that point in my life (with apologies to family, friends and girlfriends). I read somewhere recently that it was clear how much it meant to me. I’m happy about that.” While we’re reminiscing, Cole is equally positive about moving to New York. “The first year was like being on TOTP the first time for a whole year. I’d always loved visiting, and somehow I was there. I played a lot of poker, drank a lot, grew my hair. It’s all well documented. ‘Tried to rock’ is all true.” Meanwhile, visiting Sheffield will bring him close to home, unearthing memories of going with his father to watch football matches at Hillsborough and Bramall Lane... along with an unlikely ‘don’t you know who I am’ moment from his early years as a pop star. “I remember one time in Sheffield, the Commotions went out to a nightclub after a show and there was a queue and an entry fee, but our manager was having none of that. He walked to the front and announced us saying ‘we never pay’ and they let us in right away. Later we found out the entry was 50p...” That sounds like one for the autobiography. Many of Cole’s contemporaries from the eighties scene have written one; might he follow suit? “No. As mentioned in the current show, too many people need to die first.”

Lloyd Cole plays Sheffield City Hall Ballroom on Monday 27 March. www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 71

EATING OUT

You can bank on Rossi’s THIS SHEFFIELD FAVOURITE HAS IMPRESSIVE FOOD TO MATCH THE IMPRESSIVE SURROUNDINGS, SAYS PHOEBE SEYMOUR. or years, I have driven past Rossi’s Restaurant, just off London Road, and been meaning to pay a visit. So when I was invited to the bank-turnedItalian, I jumped at the chance. When my partner and I arrived, a young man dressed in a bell-boy uniform was waiting outside, just as someone has done since the restaurant opened in 1983. Simply walking up to this building and having the door opened for you makes you feel you are about to experience something truly special. Having always been curious about the interior, I was amazed by the domed ceilings with their heavenly frescos featuring cherubs and fluffy clouds. There is wall-to-wall marble and between the mighty columns is a statue of David – perhaps we’d accidently walked into an art gallery? But in an instant, we were greeted by owner Vito Restaino and shown to our table, next to a huge, old-fashioned Chubb safe – a relic from this building’s financial past. There were so many tempting dishes on the a la carte and specials menus that choosing what to have was an agonising task. However, ordering a drink was much easier. Though Rossi’s also has an intriguing and varied cocktail menu, it had to be two refreshing glasses of prosecco (£5.50).

After nibbling on olives and bread dipped in oil and balsamic vinegar to tide us over, I found a starter that appealed to both my cravings. Mare e Monte (£6.80) – or sea and mountain, combines juicy prawns and mushrooms, oven-baked in a tangy tomato sauce, topped with mozzarella. My partner, meanwhile, had the salsiccia (£6.95) from the specials menu. Presented as three Italian sausages, covered in a thick red wine tomato sauce, it was big enough to be a main course. He, however, was undaunted and ate the lot. Moving onto mains, I had the pollo cacciatore (£13.90) – pieces of chicken breast with onions, garlic, mushrooms, in a tomato wine sauce on a bed of fluffy risotto. Though my starter also had a tomato sauce, this one (like the sauce that came with the salsiccia) was much more rich and thick. My partner was delighted with his filletto verde (£20.95) - the head chef ’s signature dish. This prime tender medium grilled fillet steak was served in a cream white wine melted dolcelatte cheese sauce. Slightly burnt underneath, it had a gorgeous smoky flavour. Both were accompanied by a side of herby potatoes and vegetables, perfectly rounding off these delicious dishes. For dessert, I had the homemade tiramisu

(£4.95) and my partner had coppa fragola (£4.95) - a tall strawberry ice cream sundae. My tiramisu had light layers of cream complemented by Tia Maria drenched sponge layers, whilst my partner’s mountainous sundae was made up of creamy scoops of vanilla and sweet scoops of strawberry ice cream, crowned with whipped cream and a huge strawberry. After years of wondering, I was not disappointed. With its grand décor and delicious dishes, it’s no wonder Rossi’s has stood the test of time. I won’t leave it so long next time. When you’ve just turned 30, the after effects of those late nights linger longer than they used to. How fortuitous, then, to be spending Sunday afternoon somewhere so ideally suited to the soothing of sore heads and hungry bellies. Brocco is Sheffield’s home of ‘hygge’. The Scandinavian word, pronounced ‘hooga’, refers to a feeling of cosiness and contentment. And that’s exactly what you get the moment you walk through Brocco’s doors. Owner Tiina Carr has Finnish roots (hence the double ‘i’). That Scandi background has clearly given her an eye for design. In Brocco’s ‘neighbourhood kitchen’ restaurant, the walls are pale-coloured but not clinical; flowers and plants are dotted subtly around the room; and the overall effect is bright and inviting. Even the loos look great. On Sundays the kitchen serves roast dinners, alongside its usual lunchtime menu. Accompaniment is provided by live jazz –

local duos playing chilled-out covers of classics and chart hits. Perfect, particularly for my delicate state. So both the setting and soundtrack are brilliant – but even in the best restaurants, those things can easily be undone if the kitchen and/or front-of-house aren’t up to scratch. I’d been to Brocco once before, not long after it opened, and there was teething trouble – hit-and-miss service, average food. No longer. We were looked after by a waiting team at the top of its game – a sea of smiling faces, attentive but never fussy. As for the food, it alternated equally between the excellent and the outstanding. To start, my ham hock ravioli (£8) were tasty and delicate, narrowly beaten in the flavour stakes by my girlfriend’s earthy mushroom soup (£6). (Is a good mushroom soup ever anything other than ‘earthy’? Answers on a postcard please.) Onto mains, and a sweet potato and mixedbean cassoulet (£14) tasted of smoke and spice, with toasted seeds adding texture and interest. She’d chosen the roast beef dinner (£18), and I was counting on her not being able to finish it so I could snatch a taste myself. She is very small. The dinner was very big. My luck was in. It was glorious: tender beef, a lighter-than-

air Yorkshire pudding, and an accompanying dish of cauliflower cheese which was the best I’ve ever had the good fortune to eat. A lemon posset with blueberry and jasmine compote and chunks of homemade honeycomb (£6) brought things to a sharp, sweet finish. Had I had the proper foresight, I would have booked out one of Brocco’s gorgeous hotel rooms in advance, trundled upstairs full and satisfied, and rested my weary head on a fluffy pillow. Sadly, I had to go home instead – but at least I’d had an incredible, world-class meal, every detail of which I’d remember for weeks to come. Shame I can’t say the same about Saturday night. Back on the menu THE RETURN OF A WELL-LOVED FAVOURITE GIVES MOLLY McGREEVY MORE THAN ENOUGH REASON TO VISIT THE TICKLED TROUT. t’s not often that removing a pudding from the menu throws an entire village into uproar, but that’s exactly what happened when the Topsy Turvy Blueberry and Lavender Cheesecake disappeared from The Tickled Trout’s sweet offering. Fortunately, owner Chris Mapp listened to the masses and the cheesecake has made a triumphant return, taking its rightful place amongst a selection of Italian-inspired dishes, brought to life with fresh, local ingredients, but more about pudding later. On a chilly evening The Tickled Trout’s lounge is a comforting haven, all roaring open fires and cosy chairs. Despite its homely allure we opted to sit in the restaurant, which, with windows on all sides and a skylight, must become the favoured spot once the sun comes out. There was much deliberation over the specials menu before ordering, with both the duck breast (smoked and cured on site) and the pan-fried mullet (arrived fresh from Cornwall that morning) catching our eye. It was the Bacon and Egg (£7.50) that was eventually granted a place at the table, along with the Arancini at the Trout (£7.95). The 72-hour slow cooked ham simply fell apart whilst the quail’s egg was the perfect soft boil. In a nod to Chris’ huge attention to detail in

I

his dishes, a blob of homemade ketchup completed the plate. On my side of the table the creamy, cheesy arancini filling was encased in the crispest, lightest of batters. Tart in contrast, the truffle mayonnaise was simply delicious. Returning to the specials for our main course, my companion opted for the Roasted Monkfish and Beef Shin Cottage Pie (£18.50). Based on a classic flavour blend, this contemporary surf and turf is the perfect example of The Tickled Trout’s approach to food. Chris and his team take on every day dishes and sprinkle them with that something special to create divine flavours and textures, even the OMG Fries are given a touch of chopped black truffle. My Aubergine Bake and Pesto Bread (£11.95) was a sweet and substantial vegetarian option, the vegetables encased in layers of cheese and a rich tomato sauce, accompanied by swirls of pesto bread prepared that morning. For dessert, I simply had to choose the infamous Topsy Turvy Blueberry and Lavender Cheesecake (£6.50). Deconstructed and flipped on its head so the biscuit base can be replaced with roasted almonds for coeliac diners (Chris and his team are keen to be inclusive on their menu) the fruit layer was zesty, with subtle, aromatic hints of lavender. The Lemon Curd ice cream provided the

perfect tang against the sweetness of the berries. For my companion, the Dark Columbian Chocolate Torte with Chocolate and Nut Ice Cream and Kriek (£8.95), a Belgian cherry beer. The Kriek soon became the star of dessert – a Belgian classic, my companion deemed it closer to a sparkling wine than a pint – a flavour owed to the months the fruit is left to ferment, explained Chris. As an owner, Chris’s sheer passion for good, well done food can be seen in every dish that leaves the kitchen. Although the menu has roots in simple dishes, it’s the attention to detail: the presentation, the flavours and the textures that really make The Tickled Trout something special. EATING OUT

Ten out of 10! RACHEL MARTIN ENJOYS A LIVELY NIGHT OUT AT ONE OF FULWOOD’S FAVOURITE DINING – AND DRINKING – VENUES. f you live or work in the vicinity, West 10 will no doubt be known to you as a good place for a post work pint (or glass of infamous ‘Jonnie Red’ - the wine adorned with proprietor Jonnie Higginbottom’s own label) or two. And indeed, walking in on Friday evening, it was just as rowdy as a city bar should rightfully be at the onset of the weekend. But West 10 isn’t just about boozing. The extensive wine list might be a hint that there’s more to the place, or failing such intuition, the fact that the sign clearly reads ‘bar and bistro’ is a giveaway. And they don’t mean the deal of serving some decent-ish grub, either. The restaurant's menu is obviously carefully considered and while the former chefs have moved on to pastures new, there is plenty of variety and lots of new dishes to get excited about. After a quick browse, I opted for a starter of seared scallops (£10) and for my partner, a teeming bowl of mushroom soup (£5) – the perfect consistency and flavour, a little cream went a long way in this supremely comforting appetiser. At a tenner a go, the scallops were the most expensive option, but with three perfectly scorched samples topped with (very) crispy bacon - the smokiness, of which, beautifully complimented the tender sweetness of the shellfish, while the cauliflower puree brought a bit of tang to proceedings – it was certainly worth the price tag.

I

After to-ing and fro-ing my partner settled on a main course from the specials menu: a sensational combination of crispy, succulent peri-peri chicken (£12) – the mix of sweet and spice was a winning combination – fries and house salad. And sticking to the fishy theme I ordered the smoked salmon, poached eggs (faultlessly runny) and hollandaise sauce (£10) – providing a fantastic contrast to the earthy taste and texture of the toasted brioche. Dessert lovers will not be disappointed either, as the menu's headliners include bread and butter pudding and pink grapefruit parfait – or in our case, three shooters of Pisang Ambon (they come quickly, slip down easily and work with the food) followed by a lavish sliver of homemade chocolate brownie. When I first saw the generous portion laid out in front of me I doubted I would polish it off, but it quickly became clear this would not be a problem. Sweet, rich and woozymaking, thanks to a generous topping of Baileys custard, it’s just the thing before you turn in for the night. It’s not just the restaurant that makes the West 10 experience, though it may come as a shock when leaving – full and inevitably tipsy – that this whole fine dining experience has taken place upstairs, in that same city bar you pass on your way out. Jonnie and his team are aware of their customers’ expectations, and they have a laugh with it. And for the people whose nocturnal pleasures include ending the night

with a foggy head, this is standard procedure. “The most important thing for me is that everybody who comes here has a good time and I’m just so lucky that I have such talent working for me.” A round of ‘Jonnie Martinis’ – a boozy concoction of vodka, vermouth and sherry – fill the table as we prepare to continue our evening at the bar. “In Yorkshire, we don’t throw vodka down the sink!” Jonnie boasts, before insisting we throw back a baby Guinness for the road. Surely it’s a sign of good taste and trust that many order not one, but two drinks named after the owner. Both made, I’m told, to be enjoyed until you can make sense of the witty quotes and liquor aphorisms dotted around the place. “Don’t trust a brilliant idea unless it survives the hangover.” I had one when I stood up to go, haven’t the foggiest now though. TRAVEL

FROM ANCIENT HISTORY TO SUN-SOAKED BEACHES, RACHEL MARTIN SAVOURS AN EYE-OPENING TASTE OF THE WONDERS ISRAEL HAS TO OFFER. The Old City of Jerusalem with the dome of the Holy Sepulchre Church

SIMPLY UNFORGETABLE

TRAVEL

he question I’ve been asked most often, both before I left and since I’ve returned from my trip to Israel, is: “is it safe?” The truth is, for anyone who regularly reads or watches the news, Israel appears to be an awfully dangerous place, and, if you’re planning on visiting right now, the question will quite probably pop up. Let me begin by saying no one can really tell you about safety. In Israel (or anywhere else, for that matter) the situation can change suddenly, and tourists must always keep up to date with the latest travel alerts. I can, however, quite clearly recall floating in the Dead Sea, walking the streets of Jerusalem and bar-hopping in Tel Aviv way past nightfall, not giving my safety a second thought. Israel is not on the average travellers’ radar, and that’s not surprising, as it is definitely not your average travel destination. It may be a small country, but from city to desert, religion to religion, intense culture to untouched nature, Israel is a complicated land. And its complexities aren’t just political, but geographic and cultural, too. Be prepared to cope with every one of those extremes – I learned this quickly during my recent trip, which was far too short to get a full understanding of what a traveller can experience, but one that offered an eyeopening glimpse nonetheless. It’s almost impossible to classify any travel experience as the most memorable – each journey has its own special story. I can say, however, that Jerusalem is one of the most fascinating places I have ever visited, and if it’s not already on your bucket list, it should be.

T

‘Machane Yehuda is the perfect spot to feel Jerusalem’s ambience. The people, the smells, a cornucopia of traditional Middle Eastern street food: shawarma, falafel, tahini, freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and much, much more…’

The Old City is divided into four quarters: Muslim, Jewish, Armenian and Christian, all with different cultures, varying beliefs and traditions and all surrounded by the same wall (aka the Wailing Wall and known in Hebrew as Kotel). “The best way to discover them all is to get lost,” said our tour guide Motti Saar – a man whose adoration for his country made me fall instantly in love with Israel’s past and present. “Literally get lost – on purpose – and let the beautiful cobbledstoned streets and Via Dolorosa (the 14 stations of the ‘Way of the Cross’) reveal Jerusalem while you walk.” The most panoramic view of the city is from the top of the Mount of Olives, especially at dawn and dusk, when you can see the Dome of the Rock as it glows golden in the sunlight. And just a few minutes’ walk away lies the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where some believe Jesus was crucified and buried. One could easily spend a day touring the holy sites, but be sure to step outside of the Old City, where you’ll find the Machane Yehuda – this is your opportunity to try some local delicacies and traditional foods from the many nationalities that make Jerusalem their home. Often referred to as ‘The Shuk’, Machane Yehuda is the perfect spot to feel Jerusalem’s ambience. The people, the smells, a cornucopia of traditional Middle Eastern street food: shawarma, falafel, tahini, freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and much, much more. Of course, as incredible a destination as this city is, there’s more to Israel than Jerusalem. Tel Aviv, nicknamed the Big Orange for ¯

Stunning: the view from the ancient fortress of Masada

its 24-hour lifestyle reminiscent of the Big Apple, is a sun-bronzed strip of coastline where coffee, diverse nightlife and culinary innovation are the local obsession. You can easily spend your days laid out on a blissfully balmy beach and your nights dining and drinking along tree-lined Rothschild Boulevard. Tel Aviv also sits just up the coast from Jaffa, an ancient Arab seaport - probably the most historically important city in the Levant region, apart from Jerusalem. “Tell an Israeli you're heading to Jaffa for the first time and he'll insist you dine at Dr. Shakshuka.” Motti said, as we tucked into our starters of Tripolitan specialty salads and hummus. I knew why - this courtyard restaurant does the best version of shakshuka, the signature dish of Israel. A spicy yet comforting tomato stew, served here in a battered frying pan and topped with fried eggs – once you’ve tried it, you’ll find that you crave it long after. After discovering just some of what the North has to offer, we drove south to the Negev Desert, stopping briefly to see ancient cities off in the distance, including Mamshit, the ruins of the ancient Nabatean city of Memphis. Geologically speaking, the defining feature of the Negev is its many volcanic craters, the most famous of which is the Makhtesh Ramon Crater, Israel’s version of the Grand Canyon, and, consequently, the nearby town of Mitspe Ramon. To make the visit even more memorable, when presented with an opportunity to sand-

board, we were all in. Dror Bamidbar offers to teach you to ‘surf ’ the sand – after a couple of falls and face plants, I figured out how to slide down without hurting myself (think snowboarding but without all the heavy equipment), wrapping up the session with fragrant desert tea served on mats. A welcome indulgence after exhausting yourself schlepping up the dunes. The following day, we made our way to Sfinat Hamidbar, a Bedouin settlement in the heart of the Negev, heading towards the start

What goes up must come down: sand surfing in the Negev Desert

point for our one-hour camel ride. Nicknamed the ‘ships of the desert’, camels are funny (and entertainingly grumpy) things indeed. As it rose from its knees, I held on white-knuckled unitl we were up and trekking along a path through the desert wilderness, stopping for a view of Golda Park. Next on the agenda: hiking among strange rock formations and exploring one of the world’s earliest copper mines, Timna Park, before packing up the car once again and taking off for two days in Eilat. The turquoise-tinted waters of the Red Sea offer diving and swimming opportunities galore, and there are plenty of other attractions on offer, including an aquarium, tax-free shopping and an array of outdoor activities showcasing the spectacular local desert scenery. It is here that we discovered Israel’s ultimate hippie experience – Dolphin Reef. Located on a private beach, various activities are offered, including scuba diving, snorkelling with dolphins (a childhood dream of mine come true), kayaking and boating. Walk past all these entertaining activities, however, and up a bamboo-framed path, and this will lead you to the Relaxation Pools spa. We entered the private area – three large pools full of fresh, ocean and Dead Sea water next to each other – where a

TRAVEL masseuse met us with a friendly smile before floating us on our backs for a 30- minute therapy session, lowering our heads under water until our ears were submerged and treating us to soothing underwater music. After the therapy is complete, you can remain in the water, roam around the bar, or simply take a nap while overlooking the bordering Jordanian mountains – I opted for the latter. Our mission the next day was to venture east to the Dead Sea and Masada. Masada – ‘fortress’ in Hebrew – is an ancient fortification King Herod built for himself on top of an isolated plateau on the eastern edge of the Judean Desert. Since we only had a set amount of time, we decided to take the cable car instead of climbing the infamous Snake Path. While going up, all you see is desert for miles and miles around, and, once at the top, an incredible view greeted us. But the awesome landscape is not the only reason this place is so revered by Jews worldwide. Masada was, in fact, the last stand against the Roman Empire. When the Romans decided to attack Masada in the first century CE, the inhabitants decided they would not surrender, and rather than be enslaved, opted for mass suicide. After stopping to see the rooms that have been preserved there – you can actually see some of the original wall paintings, as the frescoes were created by applying the pigment to wet plaster so that it would soak into the wall – we headed to the lowest place on earth. As we drove towards the Dead Sea, I was astonished to see so many trees, since the water in the area is so salty. “This is due to Israeli agricultural developments around desalination of water, which allows us the ability to create oases in the desert wherever we want.” Motti explained. A trip to Israel is not complete without a float in the Dead Sea, particularly because many environmentalists believe its days are numbered due to global warming. And, while not classified as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, it is definitely a place for the record books. The Dead Sea definitely lives up to its name: there is no sign of life anywhere – no plants, no seaweed and no fish. I got to about waist-high and, as I slowly laid back, my legs bounced to the surface. I was floating – I know that’s what is supposed to happen, but what a surreal feeling to experience this in reality. Then there’s the surrounding Judean Desert itself. Probably one of the most majestic areas on this planet – and despite its proximity to the city of Jerusalem, it looks and feels like another world. My advice: take a jeep tour around the foot of Mount Sodom, which is one of the more exhilarating experiences. After an incredible six days, I returned home with my heart and belly full, anxiously awaiting the day I would once again lift a glass to life - “L’chaim”.

JONTY CORK Made by Jonty I worked at Silversmiths and West 10 before I opened Made by Jonty. I decided that I would like to own a café rather than a restaurant because I have always had a flair for making things and baking. We serve breakfast, brunch, light lunches and cakes. By serving quality food in a café, you can always deliver a standard of service far above people’s expectations. Being creative, constantly improving, meeting customers; I enjoy the whole experience of being a chef. ONANONG SPRIGGS All Siam I’ve been at All Siam six years. I used to work at a local restaurant in my home town in Thailand. After moving to England with my husband, I wanted to apply my experience to bringing authentic Thai cuisine to Sheffield. I am very proud of the fact that all of the sauces and food served at All Siam is prepared fresh at the restaurant and we don’t buy any pre-made food at all. 639 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PT Tel: 0114 2670580 www.allsiamsheffield.co.uk

I’ve been here since May 2016. As we're primarily known for being a real ale pub, the menu includes a healthy selection of pub classics, all freshly made using local suppliers and seasonal ingredients. I’ve worked in various pubs and restaurants in Sheffield and have been lucky to learn a lot from some great chefs. I like having the opportunity to create things with great produce and working with passionate people. It's hard work but rewarding. It's a great feeling when you see customers after your shift and they tell you they have enjoyed their evening. 471 Fulwood Road, Sheffield Tel: 0114 2303855 www.risingsunsheffield.co.uk

JON TITE The Showroom I’ve been here five years and became head chef two years ago. I’m a rare breed of chef as I’m vegetarian, but we offer a wide range of dishes. In the daytime, we are a café serving brunch and lunch and in the evening, we offer a relaxed restaurant vibe. We make everything in-house, including ice cream for the cinema. I make a couple of dishes from the Sheffield Cook Book; leek and cheddar boudin and pan fried sea bream with salsa Romesco, saffron potatoes, toasted almonds and beurre noisette. I’m lucky I’ve found something I love doing. I haven’t looked back. 15 Paternoster row, Sheffield, S1 2BX Tel: 0114 2495432 www.showroomworkstation.org.uk

DARREN UTLEY Cross Scythes I’ve worked here four years, cooking classic pub food with a twist. Starting out, I worked my way up at Sheffield United FC, from the kiosks to the kitchens. Experimenting with food is a thrill and keeps both me and other chefs in my team on their toes, as it encourages staff to create great food themselves. I want them to feel the same passion for food as I do. Winning last year’s Westside Magazines Young chef of the Year Award gave me a massive confidence boost to keep going and to look at even more ways to better myself on a daily basis. I was under the training of one of the top chefs of Ipswich and from there I was offered a job in Kent Thornbridgewell. I worked at the Saffron Club for four years, then worked with my present employer at his brother’s restaurant in Chesterfield before coming to Rajdhani. I find it obligatory to provide freshly cooked food to my customers. It gives me great pleasure and satisfaction to know the customers enjoy my cooking. Chefs are like artists, your passion can only bring out the best within you. Abbeydale Road South, The Old Station, Sheffield, S17 3LB. Tel: 0114 2353280 www.rajdhanirestaurant.co.uk

NADIM KHAN The Front Room I’ve been creating authentic Indian fusion dishes at The Front Room for 18 months. In the past, I’ve been a catering manager in various high-end Indian restaurants. When I was younger, I had a great mentor with 25 years’ experience. I enthused and enjoyed cooking at home. What I love the most about being a chef is the buzz of a busy kitchen. My signature dishes are lobster curry and rabbit minced with parat bread. You have to have a love and care for food to be a chef. I’m confident we have the best Indian Restaurant around. 481 Langsett Road, Sheffield, S6 2LN Tel: 0114 2853439 / 0114 2320999 www.thefrontroomindianrestaurant.co.uk

CALLUM KIRWAN Ella’s Cafe I’ve worked here one year and three months. We serve a mixture of food from Georgia, English breakfasts and dishes featuring various other influences. I did well in cookery classes at school, and my mother was extremely good at cooking. This gave me inspiration to further my skills. I came to England, from Ireland, to go to college and be closer to some of my family here. I love everything about being a chef. It’s a part of who I am. My advice to others is to watch and pick up as many pieces of advice as you can. 655 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8TR Tel: 0114 3279458 www.ellascafesheffield.com

JOSHUA R HILTON Losehill House Hotel & Spa I’ve worked at Losehill for four years, working under my fantastic mentor, Darren Goodwin. Darren has inspired me to be the chef I am today. The food we serve is a modern twist on classic flavours with fresh produce and a daily-changing seasonal menu. My signature dish would be scallops with a chorizo sauce, crispy prosciutto and courgette with chorizo soil. I became a chef to make customers happy, produce good-quality food and fulfill my passion for creating modern dishes, whilst pushing my cooking methods. Every day is a new day and my life is food. Why not live it? Losehill Lane, Edale Road, S33 6AF Tel: 01433 621219 www.losehillhouse.co.uk Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 89

CHRIS MAPP The Tickled Trout

DAVE ROBERTS

CHARLIE CURRAN

Argent Catering Solutions

Peppercorn

I’ve worked at The Tickled Trout since we opened in August 2014. We serve comfort food executed well, but also some finer dining dishes on our specials menu. Working in this industry is a family thing. I grew up in a pub and we have been involved in hospitality for many years. Because of our name, the trout dish is what we call our signature, but we do have many others that we could also class as such. We feed the local deer on the farm with our Sunday veg peelings, so it’s not just the customers that get a great Sunday lunch.

I’ve worked for Argent (clients including Sheffield Town Hall) just over four months. At our smaller units, we serve good quality home cooked food to suit a variety of tastes, classic favourites, as well as a broader selection of dishes from around the world, all freshly prepared. At our larger venues we offer more contemporary fine dining. I enjoy the creative side, as well as the diverse and interesting events, which you wouldn’t normally on a regular 9 to 5. I have always had a passion for cooking and what better way to fulfil that than through making it your career choice.

I’ve been head chef and owner three and a half years. We serve modern British food. Before buying Peppercorn, myself and my partner, Kelly ran The Samuel Fox in Derbyshire. I don’t have a signature dish as such, but one of our main courses is flying out and people are loving it. It’s the tandoori cod fillet with a sweet potato and spinach curry. I enjoy the fact that no one day is the same. My advice for younger chefs is that your next job move should always be about what you can learn, not what you can earn.

MOHAMMED SOBUJ MIAH Prithi Raj I have been at Prithiraj since 2012. I serve premier Indian cuisine with a Bangladeshi fusion. From the day we opened, I have been honoured to serve our valued clients. I can tell by the order, who the customer is and how they like it cooked. One of the reasons I became a chef was that the trade was lacking new ideas and dishes. Years ago, there was only the option of sweet, medium or hot. There just weren’t enough

SIMON BARTON Kenwood Hall Hotel I’ve been working at the Lakeview restaurant at Kenwood Hall Hotel for one year. We offer all day dining, fine dining, banqueting, conference buffets, afternoon teas and Sunday lunches. We keep up with current trends such as street food and international cuisines. We try to use everything from superfoods right through to British and local ingredients. In hotels, you have to have a wide repertoire of cooking styles due to the wide range of food offerings. Too many chefs are in environments that focus on a singular style. It is important to get out there and challenge yourself. Keep evolving. SIMON HARRISON

Samuel Fox Country Inn

Haddon Restaurant

I’ve worked here for four years as chef and proprietor. We pride ourselves on using seasonal local produce and prepare everything in-house, including breads and ice creams. The Samuel Fox Country Inn is primarily a restaurant, but has four letting rooms, so the hours are demanding. I can be up at 7am preparing breakfast and finishing after last orders. The passion for food and working with great ingredients to create dishes that ooze with fantastic tastes, flavours and textures is as strong now as when I first discovered this love affair as a teenager. Why else would you work such silly hours?

I’ve worked at the Haddon Restaurant at The Izaak Walton Hotel for two and a half years. We serve classic flavour combinations with a modern twist. I enjoy being able to put my creativity on a plate for others to enjoy. The buzz of a busy kitchen is hard to beat. There is also nothing better than taking a whole fish or meat on the bone and prepping it. It’s a core skill that every chef should have. Seeing my dishes go out, presented to a high standard, makes my passion for the job grow on a daily basis.

DAVID ROTHERBY Rossi’s I’ve worked here for 13 years, creating classic and contemporary Italian dishes. I’m proud to work at such an established restaurant. We’ve won a number of awards over the years, including a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence, the Diners Choice Award and were the runners up for the Best Family Restaurant at the Italian Awards 2015. My signature dish would have to be the filletto verde. It’s a prime tender grilled steak in a creamy white wine melted dolcelatte cheese sauce topped with parma ham. 3 Sharrow Lane, Sheffield, S11 8AE Tel: 0114 2588164 www.rossisrestaurant.vpweb.co.uk

SCOTT PHILLISKIRK The Hidden Gem Café I’ve been at The Hidden Gem for four years. I serve up-market breakfasts, brunches and lunches. We do gourmet bistro evenings with our own twist. Maintaining high standards, working as a team and producing the best quality food are all important. You learn something new every day. Along with my amazing team, I am lucky enough to create different dishes, experimenting with techniques and ingredients to create the ‘wow’ factor. LESLIE BUDDINGTON Brocco on the Park I’ve worked here for over two years. We serve modern British food with a Scandinavian influence. I’m proud of our City Hotel of the Year 2017 Cesar from The Good Hotel Guide and our inclusion in the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland. I’ve loved cooking since I was a youngster and my passion just kept growing. I cook seasonally, so my signature dish changes. Committed to quality KENWOOD HALL IS LOOKING FORWARD TO A BRIGHT FUTURE. ver the years Kenwood Hall has gained an enviable reputation as a landmark conference venue, but now, with its recent rebranding and refurbishment, the hotel is embracing a whole new era. Nestled in the heart of Sheffield, surrounded by its own charming grounds, the hotel is firmly embedded within the community, offering guests and locals a warm and inviting home away from home. But Kenwood Hall is not just a place to sleep. Head chef Simon Barton has transformed the hotel into one of the area’s finest dining experiences, with the creation of the Lakeview Restaurant, complete with its very own resident pianist during Sunday lunch. A perfectionist at heart, his dishes blend a flair for innovation with a keen eye for detail and his talented team share his passion, a fact that is borne out in the superb calibre of food served up in the brasserie. By selecting local British produce and keeping up with current ingredient and produce trends, Simon has designed a menu bursting with creative and exciting dishes, incorporating à la carte, Persian and Asian plates with a modern twist. “Commitment to quality and service is our mission,” he says. “Everything we do is homemade. We’re passionate about great food and giving customers an experience that is second to none.” Whether for a special celebration, an indulgent treat, or simply the pleasure of a traditional English ritual, afternoon tea at Kenwood Hall is also an occasion to be treasured. Enjoy freshly-baked scones, velvety clotted cream, and home-made fruit preserves - all hand-crafted by chef Simon and his team. With so much on offer, it's not surprising that the hotel has decided to expand its repertoire even further, by serving up a children’s menu, bar

Our larger rooms include our characteristic Reception Suite which can be divided in to two separate rooms and the Council Chamber which is able to accommodate larger conferences. In addition to our larger rooms our six meeting rooms can be utilised to either accompany large events as breakout space or used for smaller meetings. Located at the top of the Grand Staircase are the four entrances into the incomparable Reception Suite. The Reception Suite can be divided in to two private rooms each accommodating up to 120 delegates, alternatively the whole room can be used for any type of event and welcome a huge 220 guests. The Council Chamber can accommodate larger conferences for up to 150 delegates. This room is full of interesting details - the two; most striking details are the beautiful ceiling and the spectator area overlooking the Chamber. The entrance to the Council Chamber is via the Ante Room, located just off the Grand Staircase which shows pictures of all the previous Lord Mayor’s, starting with the Duke of Norfolk in 1897. Here at the Sheffield Town Hall we have six meeting spaces, each varying in size and character. These rooms can accommodate between 11 – 40 guests, and are all a fixed boardroom layout. We’ll have a team of judges on hand to taste the finished results and the winner will be revealed at the Westside Restaurant Awards, to be staged at Baldwins Omega on Monday 5 June. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and hopefully we’ll be able to give the careers of all four finalists a boost by placing them in the spotlight. Jonathan Coulthard said: “We’re absolutely delighted to host this exciting competition, which will once again show that these aren’t just static kitchen displays. They’re working spaces designed for superb cooking and dining, which is exactly what we do at our frequent guest events. “The space, light and technical brilliance of what we offer really comes to life with activities such as this. We wish each competing chef the very best as they put their skills to the test.” For your chance to watch these talented chefs battle it out, simply turn up to My Fathers Heart from 11am on Tuesday 6 May. This glamorous event, to be held at Baldwins Omega on Monday 5 June, is well established as one of the big nights of the year in the culinary and social calendar; it also offers a huge boost to the local restaurant scene, as the winners enjoy their moment of triumph and all the nominated restaurants bask in the glow of positive publicity. Last year’s big winners, Peppercorn, scooped two prizes on the night – Best Contemporary Restaurant and the coveted Restaurant of the Year. Now the race is on again to find the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food in a superlative setting. Westside’s reviewers have been out in force over the last few months, and the search will intensify in the build-up to the big event as we seek out the very best the region has to offer. All our recent award winners have been exceptional, so expectations are high. Meanwhile here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the big prizes in 2017, contact Westside’s publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk

WESTSIDE RESTAURANT AWARDS

Cast your vote

Join our Judging Panel

We will always give Westside readers their say in our Restaurant Awards. They are a discerning bunch who travel the region to experience the best restaurants, bistros and gastro pubs. That is why the Westside Readers’ Choice trophy is so highly prized. The Westside Readers’ Choice Award cuts across all boundaries. Whether you select your favourite local cafe, a muchloved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. Everyone who casts a vote will be entered into a draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant. Voting is free: simply go online to www.rmcmedia.co.uk/events/awards/ westside and let us know where you have enjoyed eating out most over the last 12 months. All entries must include a home address and contact details.

We want to give Westside readers a voice on the independent judging panel that decides the ultimate prize – the Westside Restaurant of the Year. The search is on to find one reader to join with our other judges, all chosen for their knowledge of food and their passion for dining out on the Westside scene, to eat together at some of the region’s finest restaurants before deciding which venue should be named as Westside’s Restaurant of the Year. Our guest judge will also be invited to join us for a special event at My Fathers Heart, the stunning kitchen showroom on Broadfield Court, where we will be putting the region’s best newest culinary talents to the test in a Masterchef-style cook-off to find the Westside / My Fathers Heart Young Chef of the Year. Turn to page 107 for more details. Does this opportunity tickle your tastebuds? To apply for a place on our judging panel, please email the managing editor, Chris Wilson, at chris.wilson@rmcmedia.co.uk and tell him in no more than 150 words what qualities you think the judges should be looking out for in the search for Westside’s Restaurant of the Year.

“Now the race is on again to find the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food in a superlative setting.”

MOTORING

Sting in the tail Welcome everyone to the most powerful Kia ever made. Called the Kia Stinger, and developed at the Nßrburgring Nordschleife, it’s a fastback four-door saloon meaning there’s the added practicality of numerous doors yet still attains the sporty profile of a coupe. Very much inspired from the Kia GT concept for shown in 2011, the Stinger will certainly be one of the most eye-catching cars on the road.

There will be three engines available when the car goes on sale later in the year: a 252hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine, a 265hp 3.3-litre turbo petrol unit and a 2.2-litre four-pot diesel producing 197hp. All Stingers will come with an in-house eight-speed automatic transmission and they’ll be available in either rear-drive or all-wheel drive formats.

GREAT BUY FOR FAMILIES

Say hello to Vauxhall’s new SUV. It’s called the Crossland X and it’s going head-to-head with the likes of the Renault Captur and the Peugeot 2008. Known as an ‘urban crossover’, its small yet box-like dimensions (16cm shorter than an Astra) mean that its not only easy to navigate in the city but it’s practical too. With the seats in place the Crossland X has 410litre boot space and this can be adjusted up to 520-litres thanks to the rear seats being able to move forwards or backwards. The Crossland X comes with a whole host of advanced technologies including a 180-degree panoramic rear-view camera, advanced park assist, forward collision alert with pedestrian detection, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning and speed sign recognition.

With a quality interior, bags of practicality, smart looks and excellent reliability with a reasonable price tag, the Hyundai i30 is a great buy for families wanting a good quality car to suit their everyday needs. From 1 March, a new generation i30 will go on sale priced from £16,995. Standard equipment includes Lane Departure Warning System, Forward Collision Warning System, Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Hill Start Assist Control featuring on all models. Standard technology and connectivity equipment also feature with all New Generation i30’s benefiting from DAB and Bluetooth regardless of trim level. Powering the i30 is an all-new 1.4-litre 138hp petrol, a 118hp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol and a 108hp 1.6-litre diesel. A six-speed manual and seven-speed DCT transmission are offered.

Back to work The Octavia is the family work-horse of the Skoda brand. It’s designed as the perfect vehicle to fulfil the needs of every family. Now though, the Octavia has had a makeover and as from January there’s a brand-new Octavia to be had. The major difference of the new model is from the outside where the front end now features a distinctive new quad light layout. There’s new technology too with improved safety and assistance systems. The new Octavia will be available in Hatch or spacey Estate form. Six engines will be available (three petrol, three diesel) and each can be specified with either a manual or automatic DSG gearbox and there are seven trim levels to choose from. Prices start from £17,005 to £30,085.
