Local walks to try

ello and welcome to the March issue of Westside. There’s a hint of spring in the air and with that in mind we’ve been taking advantage of the wonderful countryside we are lucky to have on our doorstep. Walking has become a big part of our routine over the last months and if you’re looking for somewhere new to explore we might have what you’re looking for. Health and wellbeing is also at the forefront of our minds and we look at the benefits of juicing as well as some accessories that can make a positive impact. One thing we really miss is a trip to our favourite restaurant, but worry not, many are now doing takeaways for you to enjoy at home. We look at some of the best. Elsewhere we focus on local schools and look at how you can approach homeschooling in a fun and focused way. See you next month.

125k challenge NICOLA SPENCER HAS UNDERTAKEN AN EPIC TRIAL IN MEMORY OF HER MUM AND THE FANTASTIC CARE SHE RECEIVED AT ST LUKE’S HOSPICE. icola Spencer knew she wouldn’t be alone when, on 1 February, she set off on a month of running in memory of her mum, Anne. For as well as partner Lee, children Maddie and Rudi and other members of her family, Nicola was joined in her 125k challenge by colleagues from Ecclesall Road estate agency Spencers and friends both at home and around the world. That means people from as far afield as the Australian city of Perth, Dubai in the Middle East, Monaco on the Mediterranean and the Scottish capital Edinburgh will be doing their own runs and raising money for Sheffield’s St Luke’s Hospice. “My lovely mum died on 27 December after a very quick return of lymphoma that took her from us within just ten days,” said Nicola, the managing director of Spencers. “Mum was desperate to get to St Luke’s Hospice, which she did, though she died within 24 hours of being there. “St Luke’s was always close to her heart and we know too many people that have ended their days in their wonderful care. “Telling mum on Boxing Day morning that she could go to St Luke’s felt like the greatest gift I had ever been able to give her, she was so incredibly thankful, and immediately felt a sense of relief. At St Luke’s they spent the whole of Boxing Day making sure she was comfortable and listening to her and her wishes to want to feel loved and cared for. Mum died the next day, peacefully in a beautiful room.

N

Nicola with mum, Anne in New York

“I had never been to St Luke’s before but all I can say is that the level of care, even in the short time she was there, was amazing and the feeling was one of calm and peace. “I will be forever thankful to David for the way he spoke to me on Christmas Day, I knew he was going to do everything he could to make the move happen and his manner and professionalism was everything that I needed to hear in my time of need. We are therefore raising funds for this

amazing charity, and hope that people will want to join us in the challenge to remember my lovely mum.” Nicola has chosen 125k because that is the round trip distance from her parents’ Sheffield home to Old Trafford in Manchester, where Anne and husband Jim were season ticket holders for their favourite football team, Manchester United. “We want as many people as possible to join us and attempt to hit their 125km target by running, walking, cycling, horse riding or whichever way they want to complete the distance throughout February,” Nicola said. “In times when we can’t get out as much as we’d like and we can only exercise once a day, this challenge might help people to get out of the house, feel a bit better about life and support a great charity.”

The one and only THOMAS TIETZSCH-TYLER HAS MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF AS A CRAFTSMAN, CREATING BEAUTIFULLY-MADE, ONE OF A KIND GUITARS. disused former cutlery factory in Sheffield has become a workplace fit for heroes. Guitar heroes, that is. If you’ve ever wanted to emulate the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page or Mark Knopfler, then the man you’ll need

A

22 www.sheffieldvibe.com

to see is Thomas Tietzsch-Tyler. That’s because the alliterative owner of Tietzsch Guitars has an instrument just for you. And only you. All of Thom’s electric guitars are handmade to order in his workshop at the Portland Works complex, a restored

nineteenth-century building now housing workspace for small artisan businesses. It’s here he has made a name for himself as a craftsman, creating beautifully-made guitars to meet the exacting requirements of customers from far and wide.

023 WSide Mar21 10/02/2021 12:36 Page 1

The business was a logical progression for Thom, who admits he was obsessed with guitars from the age of 12, (he’s now ‘approaching’ 40) and has spent much of the time since then playing in bands in and around Sheffield. If you’re lucky enough to own one of his guitars, it’s likely their rarity value will exceed the £1,500 to £3,000 asking price for a bespoke instrument that is tailor-made to your desired specification. Every component is made by hand. Above all, his products are not copies, though the cognoscenti might perhaps recognise familiar attributes and

influences of some of the legendary models prized by musicians. Among the finished articles in his workshop are examples that could at first glance be reminiscent of the Fender Telecaster or Stratocaster, but look more closely and the devil is in the detail. The solid bodies are crafted from a single piece of wood, and finished with a lacquer long since abandoned by the big makers in favour of alternatives that are better suited to mass production. “This takes days to dry and if it’s cold weather it can take even longer”, said Thom. “The difference between a factory-

made guitar and one I make here is like the difference between a production-line car and a hand-built one. It can be anything you want it to be.” Certainly, it would seem customers think so. It takes around 12 weeks to complete a guitar, and his order books are full. “I currently have six commissions in hand, which is quite enough for a oneman operation,”he says.

You can find Tietzsch Guitars on social media platforms as well at the Portland Words website: www.portlandworks.co.uk www.sheffieldvibe.com 23

Lockdown learning HOMESCHOOLING YOUR CHILDREN ALONG WITH WORK AND REGULAR HOME LIFE IS NOT AN EASY ASK, BUT IS A ROLE MANY PARENTS HAVE TAKEN IN THEIR STRIDE.

EDUCATION

t may not sound the most attractive package, but it’s one that millions of us have signed up for. It’s called being a parent through the pandemic. Barely any aspect of everyday life has escaped the impact of the virus. But it has been most widely-felt in our education system, where school closures have threatened to disrupt the future prospects of a generation of children and young adults. And yet the combined response of schools and other organisations has, in true Dunkirk spirit, left the outlook looking not quite so bleak. The schools themselves have in many cases made enormous efforts during the closures to bring classrooms up to the required safety standards, from the now-familiar yellow and black tapes denoting safe distancing areas through to deep-cleaning the school buildings throughout. It is fortunate indeed that the pandemic didn’t happen 20 or even ten years ago. Back then, home computers were anything but commonplace and access to the internet as we know it just didn’t exist. The fact that schools can now do the bulk of their teaching online has meant that classwork can continue almost as normal. And while it can never replace the real thing, it at least provides some continuity at a time when the effects on the exam system have yet to be determined. Critics of home-schooling argue that children may lack social contact at home, possibly resulting in children having poorer social skills. They also express concern that some parents may not have the skills required to guide and advise their children in life skills and therefore home-schooling cannot guarantee a comprehensive and neutral education. However, research shows this doesn’t seem to be borne out by the facts. There are many studies that show home-schooled children score better on standardised tests and have equal or more highly-developed social skills. They also participate more in cultural and family activities. In addition, studies suggest that home-schoolers are generally more likely to have higher selfesteem, build deeper friendships, and better relationships with adults. Moreover, they are less susceptible to peer pressure. Most schools reacted swiftly when it became more apparent that closures were imminent. A case in point is Birkdale School in Sheffield, where headteacher Peter Harris led the response to the

I

unprecedented crisis by paving the way for students to work effectively from home. “Some of the staff had used the Google Classroom software before but many others were not so familiar with it. So it was clear we had to invest in staff training. We also picked up little tips on how to do things differently along the way, and I would issue regular staff briefings on them – a kind of top tips. “We have managed to timetable largely as normal so the pupils and staff both know what they are doing. We have an assembly as normal and the same lessons with the exception of games/PE. I think it is quite important to have that regular pattern, because once it is in place it’s possible to learn more as we go along. For example we gradually picked up on useful information on using cameras and microphones, how to ask questions in class and submitting home work. “It has been really well-received by pupils and parents. The vast majority of our online lessons are live, so you get that kind of interaction which works

very well in class. It’s all about having the same normality as you would in the classroom. It has all meant the pupils are pretty well where they should be in normal circumstances.” Peter says that the experience of the pandemic has convinced Birkdale to retain some element of online classes even after regulations have been lifted. As if to prove every cloud has a silver lining, he points out several unexpected dividends that have emerged during the lockdown school closures. “It has the benefit that there will be no more snow days, although the pupils will probably not see it that way. Even more significantly, if we are teaching internationally or even outside the local area, it does give us the flexibility to do that.” “There is also the fact that parents’ evenings work far better online. There are no timetabling problems, no queues, nor waiting for teachers to become available and you don’t have the parking problems. And yet parents can get to see the teachers and have a useful conversation.”

Hannah Edwards

Rather than waiting for the inevitable, Westbourne School anticipated the first lockdown, with teachers providing homework via Google Classroom, giving pupils time to adjust and staff time to deal with any technical issues before the official lockdown and remote teaching and learning began. It was that early response that allowed the school to be fully prepared, using Google as the platform as all classes went online. Westbourne remained in a strong position to provide robust educational support for all year groups - and when this second lockdown set in, all mechanisms were set in place to ensure as full a curriculum as possible for all year groups. Online provision generally adheres to Westbourne’s regular timetable and curriculum, but the remote teaching timetable has been shaped to allow children to take navigate their remote learning in a healthy and flexible manner. The usual seven lessons have been reduced to five lessons per day. This allows pupils to spend time away from their devices and screens to ensure a healthy work-life balance. The children’s wellbeing and ability to cope is monitored throughout. Speaking of parents, the good news is that there are plenty of support and learning resources available free of charge online. Among the most useful is the BBC’s Bitesize programme. This pulls hundreds of educational resources together to help with home-schooling and available on television, online or on social media. This is an idea which is likely to find favour with children of all ages, since much of the material is derived from their favourite TV programmes such as Horrible Histories or Celebrity Supply Teacher, but with an educational twist. Up to two hours of these programmes are available for secondary school students as support to the curriculum. Things have been altogether different for nursery age children. Stephanie Connelly, proprietor of the Old School House Nursery Schools, has seen a greater uptake in places this time around compared to the first lockdown in March last year. With less emphasis on education, 26 www.sheffieldvibe.com

although there is a curriculum, it’s been more about providing a happy and welcoming environment, from 7.30 in a morning to 6.30 at night. “It’s been much better this time around,” said Stephanie. “We work in bubbles, there is no staff crossover and parents aren’t allowed in our buildings. Children are temperature checked and we monitor them as best we can, it’s very much business as usual. Of course, when children are at home we have plenty of activities for them to try should they wish to do so.” Lastly, some parents opt for private tuition, either to augment their child’s general education or to focus on particular subjects he or she might be finding especially difficult. All online private tuition sessions are usually held after school by tutors who are first vetted by an agency. This has opened up opportunities for young people with a flair for teaching, like Oxford science undergraduate Hannah Edwards (pictured), who took it up after swapping Sheffield Girls school for university. “Some younger students come to me utterly frustrated, having convinced

themselves they will never make progress in a certain area or subject. But with the sessions being one-on-one, it’s much easier to find the real problem and work on it. They soon grow in confidence,” says Hannah. Kip McGrath, who are based on Oakbrook Road, have also had to take their tutoring sessions online. “What a strange six months!” side centre Kip McGrath director Claire Slater. “We opened our centre six months ago, then just four weeks later had to shut because of lockdown. “Since then we’ve been supporting families through home schooling with our online Maths and English lessons, boosting children’s self-esteem and encouraging a positive attitude towards learning. “We’ve now opened the centre back up again and now is the perfect time to help your child catch up, keep up and be ready for the school year ahead. Book a free assessment today online or in centre and find out why Kip McGrath makes a difference.” Hannah can be contacted on Hannah@theedwards.co.uk

The Birkdale difference

Head of Prep Chris Burch with pupils

FROM ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS TO INDEPENDENCE, PERSEVERANCE TO RESILIENCE, THE SCHOOL BELIEVES IT EXEMPLIFIES THE UNIQUE APPROACH THEY TAKE TO EDUCATION AND LEARNING. ver the past year, Birkdale School has had to adapt to a new way of working for a new world. When you have children aged from four all the way through to 18, there is no one size fits all approach, but the teachers and staff were determined to make sure learning could continue and the pupils could be supported during a difficult time for everybody. At the Prep School, where boys and girls come together for the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, children have used both Seesaw and Google Classroom for their remote teaching and learning. These have covered Numeracy, Literacy, Science, History, Geography, Spanish, Music, Drama, Art, ICT, Design Technology, PSHEE and Religious Studies. Every day the children tackle tasks set by their own teachers and there is individualised and private oral and written feedback. In addition to the vast array of activities on Seesaw, the children access two live lessons every day with their form teacher. The remote teaching and learning provision is enhanced by video assemblies and by recordings of teachers, and the Headteacher, reading stories. In the Prep department (Key Stage 2, Y3-Y6), the children access the whole curriculum through Google Classroom. Each child follows their individual timetable accessing live lessons and set work in all subjects. The remote teaching and learning provision is further enhanced by four assemblies (including one with music) a week. Teachers are able to differentiate and set individual tasks and targets for the children while marking and feedback is given to the children every day. At Birkdale Senior School and Sixth Form, each day begins with online Form time or assembly, where pupils come together to take part in activities, celebrate achievements and worship.

O

Alan Turing Crypotgraphy Competition

Head of Birkdale School Peter Harris

Teaching has also continued with a full timetable delivered by Google Classroom. The school day begins at 8.45am and ends at 3.45pm where pupils have direct access to the teacher throughout the lesson. Lessons are interactive with teachers sharing responses through Google Classroom and feedback is also given online. Break-out rooms are used to maximise interaction amongst pupils and here they can see each other in smaller groups, something the school finds hugely impacts on engagement. For all pupils the Games and PE curriculum has been replaced with setting physical challenges. House points are awarded for each challenge completed and have been set particularly to engage pupils to take part in offscreen activity. Extra-curricular activities are taking place where possible, with guest speakers at our Medical and Newton Societies, ICT competitions and performance opportunities for musicians. The way learning and support takes place across the age groups has constantly evolved over the past year

with teachers making sure pupils are working and engaged, and wellbeing a core focus and primary concern. Offscreen activity days have been introduced to ensure pupils spend time away from their computers, and staff have been in regular touch with parents to check everything is going well. Despite the pandemic changing everyone’s worlds, Birkdale pupils have been developing skills that will help them greatly in future life. From organisational skills to independence, perseverance to resilience, the school believes it exemplifies the unique approach they take to education and learning, something that can be summed up as The Birkdale Difference. Ahead of the game WESTBOURNE’S ONLINE APPROACH ENSURED TEACHING AND LEARNING HAS NEVER STOPPED. n a year of the unexpected, one thing that has never wavered has been Westbourne School’s commitment to providing the best possible education for all its pupils and the mood at Westbourne remains positive at all times. The Westbourne spirit of resilience really did take over as the first national lockdown took hold and the school developed a response that ensured as full an education programme as possible was maintained. Rather than waiting for the inevitable, Westbourne anticipated the first lockdown, with teachers providing homework via Google Classroom, giving pupils time to adjust and staff time to deal with any technical issues before the official lockdown and remote teaching and learning began. It was that early response that allowed the school to be fully prepared, using Google as the platform as all classes went online. Being ahead of the game and Westbourne’s reputation for academic excellence, pastoral care and a commitment to small class sizes led to an increased demand for places at the school. Several children’s first experience of Westbourne involved meeting their classmates and form tutor on a screen! The balance between academic excellence, exercise and pastoral care is core to the Westbourne approach. This was more important than ever as the national education system was rocked and every family and child were faced with restrictions on many of their daily activities. Although there were challenges in terms of giving pupils the opportunity to sit exams, the teaching staff were quick to adapt, providing a full timetable of remote teaching. This placed Westbourne in a strong position to provide robust educational support for all year groups - and when this second lockdown set in, all mechanisms were set in place to ensure as full a curriculum as possible for all year groups. Online provision generally adheres to Westbourne’s regular timetable and

I

Online teaching

curriculum, but the remote teaching timetable has been shaped to allow children to take navigate their remote learning in a healthy and flexible manner. The usual seven lessons have been reduced to five lessons per day. This allows pupils to spend time away from their devices and screens to ensure a healthy work-life balance. The children’s wellbeing and ability to cope is monitored throughout.

Currently enjoyed by the key worker children, Westbourne continues to offer all pupils the opportunity to enjoy classes in the new Forest School area for outdoor learning and development.

Forest School

Virtual concert

When lockdown eases and children are able to return to the classroom, they will find that facilities continue to improve all the time. The new Garden Studio has created a safe haven and peaceful centre for learning, a tech free and environmentally friendly space for all children and staff which forms part of the Broomhill independent school’s provision for wellbeing.

And perhaps most important of all, Westbourne will be going ahead with an ambitious £3million redevelopment project this year. What the past year has most clearly demonstrated is that Westbourne’s staff and pupils live and breathe the school’s values of excellence and inclusion, respect and resilience. Whatever the future holds, those four words encapsulate everything about Westbourne’s spirit of positivity and an attitude that will help the school to grow and thrive in the years ahead. Looking to the future APPROACHING SIX DECADES IN BUSINESS, T.L. KILLI’S CONTINUE TO MOVE WITH THE TIMES AND REMAIN AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE CLEANING INDUSTRY. fter almost 57 years in business, there’s almost nothing that Tibor Killi doesn’t know about cleaning. They are the largest independent distributor of cleaning equipment and materials in the UK and export into every country across Europe, as well as the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, China and beyond. “We have sold and provided thousands of units and services across the health, education, leisure and hospitality sectors (to name a small number), as well as to domestic users and we stock over 3,000 products, ranging from janitorial items right up to industrial ride-on sweepers,” Tibor said. Indeed, T.L. Killi’s supply hospitals, care homes and a number of hotel chains including, Hilton, Travelodge, Mercure and Marriott, to name but a few. Tibor left his native Budapest after the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, first settling in Manchester before moving to Sheffield in 1964. It was in the Steel City that he set up his own business on Glossop Road, first servicing the city’s engineering trades before expanding into domestic and commercial cleaning services and supply. At its heart, Killi’s has remained a family-led business (there’s Tibor, his wife Josephine, sons Tibor Junior and Imre, and daughter Marica) with an emphasis on exceptional standards and traditional values, and they are always looking to improve and progress. One such example is a move into robotic vacuum cleaners, which are proving extremely popular - and efficient - for a good number of their clients. Tibor favours the Italian-built Lindhaus ‘Robby’ which is an intelligent robot that sweeps, sucks and washes the floor and carpet surfaces. At only 8cm tall it passes easily under beds, furniture and sanitaryware Using hotels as an example, as many of the rooms are exact replicas, the Robby can outline a room, vacuum, store it in memory and then move onto the next one without too much fuss. It

A

even returns to its charger automatically when it’s finished. Much more conventional but equally loved by Tibor is the Fakir HSA-700 Cordless Battery Vacuum Cleaner, a product which he helped to develop. The dual-speed machine is incredibly light and a unique roller picks up all those loose hairs, something often missed by other conventional cleaners. Every machine at Killi’s undergoes a rigorous testing process and a free demonstration is always offered. They can also repair and service machines and due to the current pandemic, are currently collecting and re-delivering machines free of charge. “The lovely people of Sheffield have kept us in business for 56 years, it is only fair that we give something back,” added Tibor. In response to the pandemic, T.L. Killi’s has been front and centre over the last 12 months, providing everything from sanitisers and PPE to cleaning equipment and services to those who

need it. Their Zoono sanitisers, which come from New Zealand, have proved particularly effective and are alcohol-free, proven to kill 99.9% of germs and one application lasts for 24 hours. There’s no doubt T.L. Killi’s will continue to move with the times, providing cleaning supplies and services for many years to come. T.L. Window of opportunity AFTER MOVING TO A NEW, LARGER SHOWROOM, TIMBER WINDOWS OF SHEFFIELD ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO BRIGHTER DAYS AHEAD. robably not the best time to open a new showroom... We opened the showroom on 4 January and closed it 5 January due to lockdown, but we have the confidence to make the choices that our business needs, even during a pandemic - and that definitely meant we needed a larger showroom. After moving to Ecclesall Road in 2016, we were welcomed into the local community by clients and fellow shopkeepers alike. The Banner Cross area still retains a village feel and despite all the current issues with lockdown, I really feel that community spirit is growing stronger as the years go by. These are the comments of Bev Hales, who’s enthusiasm and passion for her job has seen Timber Windows of Sheffield become a staple part of the Banner Cross streetscene and the larger

P

South Yorkshire community. Established as Prestige Windows in 2009 with emphasis on timber windows and doors we’ve seen our business grow and develop into the Timber Windows of Sheffield that our clients recognise today. An independent family company allied with a range of products that perfectly suit character and period properties. We offer timber windows and doors that turn the usual concept of timber on its head. With fully painted, fully glazed

products offering a 12-year paint guarantee and 30-year guarantee against insect and fungal infection. But we also offer steel look windows by Aluco, which give the 1930s properties a new lease of life and meet modern living requirements. When lockdown is over we look forward to our clients being able to wander in to browse the new samples at their leisure. We’ve seen so much interest from passers by that we can’t wait for that time to come. But for now we’re grateful to be busy with orders despite the lockdown and like everyone we look forward to much brighter days ahead. However, they are still supplying kitchens. They would like to thank all their customers, old and new, for being so understanding and supportive this past year, it has certainly been the hardest yet. WALKING

Walk this way PARKS, GARDENS, WOODLANDS AND MOORLANDS ARE ALL ACCESSIBLE FROM OUR HOMES AND THE PERFECT PLACES TO EXPLORE DURING THIS RESTRICTED TIME. GRAB YOUR WALKING BOOTS AND GET OUTSIDE. hether we’ve been in tiers one, two or three or in full lockdown, walking has been the one constant throughout the whole pandemic. It’s probably formed the largest part of your daily exercise, can be undertaken alone or by the whole family and can be as long or short as you need it to be. If you live in south-west Sheffield or north derbyshire you’re pretty spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing where to walk to, with lots of parks, gardens, woodlands and moorlands to explore, all at a safe distance of course. Sheffielders can access any number of parks and gardens close to their homes, including Endcliffe, Millhouses and the Botanical Gardens. If you want to stretch your legs a bit further, a walk up through Hutcliffe Woods, past Beauchief Abbey on to see the deer (if you know, you know) is a great way to entertain the family, while the welltrodden route up through the Porter Valley to Forge Dam enjoyable. And

W

50 www.sheffieldvibe.com

you can get a coffee or hot chocolate en route to warm you up. Experienced walkers might want to tackle the Sheffield Round Walk, which starts in Endcliffe Park and loops for 15 miles around some of the city’s greenest landscapes. If you live in Derbyshire and have Baslow, Bakewell or Castleton as your base you’re in touching distance of the likes of Chatsworth, Edensor, Mam Tor and the Hope Valley. The countryside is your oyster. Like everyone, here at Westside we’ve caught the walking bug too and have been trying to vary our routes to keep us motivated. With that in mind, here are a selection of walks, for all ages and abilities, if you’re looking for something different (or not so). For longer walks, good, sturdy walking boots are recommended and remember to take some refreshments with you as options can be limited during the current lockdown. Happy rambling!

Ecclesall Woods From springtime bluebells to autumn’s glorious shades of orange, Ecclesall Woods is a great place to visit at any time of year. With entrances on Dobcroft Road, Whirlowdale Road, Whirlow Park Road, Abbeydale Road, Abbey Lane and Limb Lane, it’s easy enough to access the woods wherever you live in south-west Sheffield. Once inside you’ll find clearly marked routes of between 1km and 5km which follow good tracks, though they can get a little muddy on wet days. Explore to your heart’s content.

WALKING

Porter Valley With Endcliffe Park as your starting point head up (or is it down?) through Bingham Park past Shepherd’s Wheel across Hangingwater Road and Whitely Wood Road before reaching the Fulwood and Forge Dam. About two miles in length, It’s a pleasant walk for the whole family. The first part is tarmac pathways before splitting into differing routes after Hangingwater but is mainly flat throughout and suitable for prams and buggies. Children will love the stepping stones just after Whitely Wood Road and there’s lots to explore along the way. At Forge Dam there’s a children’s play area, some outdoor seating by the pond and the cafe is open for takeaway drinks and snacks - there’s a large marquee too if the weather’s being typically British. This stretch of trail is noticeably busier on weekends but there’s still ample room to social distance.

Sheffield Parks Walk The near 15-mile round walk, which starts at Endcliffe Park, is a great way to discover hidden Sheffield gems.Taken in sections (if you don’t want to tackle the whole thing), it is pretty easy going for the most casual Sunday stroller (though there is a steep incline through Lady Spring Wood at Beauchief). The walk is signposted extremely well, so even if you are not familiar with the route it would be hard to go astray. The Route: 1. Start from Endcliffe Park at Hunters Bar and follow the Porter Brook through woodland to Bingham Park at the western end. Continue along the brook and Whiteley Woods passing the Forge Dam cafe on the way. 2. Head through the Mayfield Valley along Clough Lane to the peaceful wooded area of Porter Clough where you turn south to the little village of Ringinglow on the edge of the Peak District National Park. Pass through the village, head through the Limb Valley with the Limb Brook and woodland trails. 3. Walk through Whirlow Brook Park and continue south-east through Ecclesall Woods where you’ll pass Abbeydale Miniature railway. Continue towards Beauchief Abbey, passing through Ladies Spring Wood on the way. Beauchief Park includes the remains of the 12th century Abbey, a 17th century church and a pretty mill pond. 4. The route continues east to Meadowhead and Graves Park, after which you turn north through Lees Hall golf club and Meersbrook Park. The final section takes you through Chelsea Park and Brincliffe before finishing back at Endcliffe Park. >>>> www.sheffieldvibe.com 51

WALKING

Bakewell/Chatsworth This six-mile walk from Bakewell takes you over the Monsal Trail, through some woods and to the picturesque village of Edensor, ending in the gem of the Derbyshire countryside, Chatsworth House.

The Route: 1. From the centre of Bakewell, cross the river of the medieval bridge and turn along Combs Lane. Walk along here until you reach a footpath sign by a gate on the left. Go up the tarmac drive and turn right and continue up the field side to a bridge over the Monsal Trail. Carry on up right, across the golf course and on a prominent track into the wood. Where a small stream comes down continue up steeply to a ladder stile over the wall at the top of the wood, then head half right for the clump of beech and a pond. Go over a stile by the pond, along its south side to another gate and stile. 2. Follow the grassy footpath for about half a mile, gently downhill keeping just left of the shallow depression to a gate, above a plantation. Carry on through this down a broad track towards Russian Cottage, but turn left before this and a ‘Dutch Barn’ at a signpost: Edensor. Follow this through a gate - a track leads through plantations into Chatsworth Park, where a couple of benches make a pleasant point to stop and view Chatsworth in its setting, with Stand Woods and the Hunting Tower behind. 3. From here head between two plantations for a point just left of Edensor Church. On nearing the village, look for an electricity sub-station within a walled enclosure. To the right of this go through an unusual wrought-iron gate at the top of four stone steps, and so down to a tarmac road. Turn right down this road into the village of Edensor. Leave the village through the white gates, cross the main road, B6012, and take the footpath opposite. In a few minutes Chatsworth House comes into view. 4. From Chatsworth you have a choice of two routes back… a more direct one back through Edensor or a longer one which includes a walk by the River Derwent. 5. If you’re taking the longer route, cross back over the bridge over the river and turn immediately left, to follow a broad track of grass which does not follow the river but heads almost straight for the next bend in it. From here follow the river along to just after the ruined corn mill building on your right, then walk up the grassy slope to join the road. Cross and follow the tarmac road along the edge of 52 www.sheffieldvibe.com

the car park towards the garden centre. 6. Keep straight on past the garden centre (refreshment and toilets here) and the road shortly curves to the right, into Calton Lees. At a small grass triangle keep straight on up a track with a stream on your left. Follow the track up the valley for almost a mile to Calton Houses. The track is a public bridleway and zig-zags up between the houses and continues up the valley with a plantation close on the left. Nearly 300m above Calton Houses the bridleway goes between this plantation and the next, through a gate on the left where the little stream in the valley sometimes flows over the track. The way continues on the track waymarked with blue arrows curving round until you are almost walking the opposite direction for a little way, but it gradually ascends bearing right and opens out, heading almost south up Calton Pastures. 7. Head straight up the slope just right of a shallow depression containing two gritstone troughs. You should see a finger post at the top at the right end of the plantation. Now turn right and follow the grassy track back to the beeches and pond. Either retrace your steps direct down to Bakewell or continue along the ridge up a slight rise, past the site of an Iron Age fort to a gate and farm cross leading to Ball Cross and a minor road. Turn left down this a few yards then go left down the steep bridleway through the wood and across the golf course to the old station. Continue down Station Road into Bakewell. 8. If you’re taking the shorter route, retrace your steps from Chatsworth to

Edensor and in the village follow the road to the right-hand side of the church. Keep going up this road, which peters out into a rough track. Follow this as it climbs slowly uphill and turn left when you reach a road. Follow this until it starts to bend to the right, here take the bridleway down through the trees, across the golf course to the old station and down into Bakewell.

WALKING

Castleton/Mam Tor Known to be one of the best ridge walks in the country, this Peak District walk, which starts in Castleton and is just over six miles in length, gives stunning views over Edale, Hope Valley and even the edge of Kinder Scout. The Route: 1. From the car park turn left up the main road, then first right by the Castle Inn, then right again on a narrow lane just past the youth hostel. Beyond a bridge the lane curves up to the left then heads straight on to become a stony path beyond cottages. Follow this path until you reach a road. Cross the road and go through a gate (or over the stile) and 7follow the path that leads to the left, running parallel to the road. This joins a track which leads to Treak Cliff Cavern. 2. Take the steps beside the cavern and turn right to walk along the hillside - to arrive at Blue John Cavern. Cross the car park in front of the cavern entrance and

go through a gate to follow the path uphill to a farm, turning right at a signpost. Follow the wall and go through a gate at the corner of the field, then straight on a cross the next field. Cross the road and go through a gate, then across the field to another road, through the gate opposite and up the hill. Go through another gate and up steps to the road. 3. Go through a gate on the right and follow the stepped path to the summit of Mam Tor. From the summit, as you look down towards Castleton, go down the obvious path to your left until you reach

Hollins Cross, the junction of several routes. Go straight on here towards the craggy top of Back Tor, crossing a stile and climbing the short steep slope to the summit. Continue along the path to the next high point. Lose Hill Pike, with excellent views all around. 4. Turn right after Spring Bank Farm along another track. Bear left at the junction but at the next one go straight on, over a stile. After the next stile bear very slightly left over a field and join a stony lane, emerging soon into a surface lane, gradually curving left down into Castleton.

If you decide to take on any of these walks, send us some pictures and we’ll include them in the next issue of Westside. Email them to richard.abbey@rmcmedia.co.uk

What is MediSculpt Therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS. ediSculpt Therapy is a non-surgical, very low calorie weight loss program which can combat obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents, and two body contouring treatments – LPG Endermologie and Vanquish MeTM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has both of these machines and the choice of which one to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully-trained therapists and last about 30-40 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, they know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss. During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. G&M Healthcare also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. Once the phase 1 target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients are moved onto phase 2 where ‘normal foods’, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost. After the stabilisation phase there is a life-long maintenance programme where G&M Healthcare six weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter.

M

Kerry Norris Lost 7st on Medisculpt Therapy The cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. Recent studies from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), published by G Thom et al in Glasgow in collaboration with the NHS in September this year and by Yiqoao Xin et al in May 2020, have shown that very low calorie diets can cause remission in people with early type 2 Diabetes Mellitus of less than six years since onset. The programme is now being rolled out on a bigger trial of 5,000 people in the UK. G&M Healthcare is offering a free informal consultation with their GP, so if you would like to learn more and have your weight and body fat composition checked, please call 0114 233 5000, text them on 07944 629727 or email g.m.healthcarereception@gmail.com. TAKEAWAYS

Home comforts WE MAYBE UNABLE TO EAT OUT AT PRESENT BUT YOU CAN STILL SUPPORT YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT BY TAKING THEIR FOOD HOME. WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE BEST TAKEAWAYS ON OFFER. ith pubs and restaurants closed for much of the last 12 months, the only option we’ve had to ‘eat out’ is by having a takeaway. These now come in many shapes and forms and can be a far cry from your usual curry, Chinese or fish ‘n’ chips, although all of these are available – and much, much more. To adapt to the many changes brought about by the pandemic, many venues have

W

adapted their menus to offer a takeaway service – and these have proved a real hit in our area. From meals you can eat straight out of the box to ones you cook at home, with carefully curated instructions, we’ve been spoilt for choice in our little corner of south-west Sheffield and North Derbyshire. Some venues have partnered with app-based delivery services, including JustEat, Deliveroo, Uber Eats and City Grab for example, while some

you can collect from the door. Seeing as we can’t yet visit our favourite pubs and restaurants we thought we’d bring them into our homes and put their takeaway menus to the test. From Middle Eastern meze and Greek gyros to soup and sandwiches and Sunday lunch, over the next few pages we focus on five takeaway experiences that have tickled our tastebuds over the last month. Maybe you should give them a try too.

THE GREEDY GREEK DELI

ffering a takeaway service is nothing new for Sharrowvale Road’s The Greedy Greek Deli but is something that they have excelled in over the last 12 months. Whether you collect from the restaurant or take advantage of their delivery service, you can enjoy a taste of the Mediterranean in the comfort of your own home with no compromise on quality. Sometimes, when having a takeaway from the Greedy Greek, the hardest part is knowing where to start. With so much choice, it’s easy to overlook some stunning dishes. Faced with a similar quandary, we let owner Helen Mouzakis make our choices for us and were very glad we did. A Dips Meze (£10.40) with tzatziki, homous, strofilia and olive pate, halloumi cheese (£5.80) and bite-size spanakotyropita (£1.20 each) were a good place to start. The crispy, samosa-style spanakotyropita, filled with spinach and feta, were delicious. Moving on, we had some traditional Greek spit roast pork

O

(£5.95) and fresh grilled chicken fillet skewers (£5.95) which partnered brilliantly with warm pitta breads, salad (£6.85) and the dips to make gyros-style wraps. A serving of moussaka (£9.50) was rich with potatoes, aubergines and savoury mince and I particularly loved the Greek lemon potatoes (£4.50), which had been cooked in olive oil, lemon juice and herbs - zingy and delicious. Helen was particularly kind and had sent us a selection of desserts too. Traditional baclava (£4.30), made with filo pastry, nuts and honey syrup, was sweet and sticky as it should be, but special mention should be reserved for the Greek orange cake (£4.30). Made from filo pastry and yoghurt with orange syrup, and accompanied with a pot of creme fraiche, it was a real star and partnered well with a strong black coffee. With holidays abroad seemingly on hold for the forseeable future, this is perhaps the closest you’ll get to the Mediterranean for now, but don’t worry, you won’t be disappointed. www.sheffieldvibe.com 55

TAKEAWAYS

THE MAYNARD hen Rob Hattersley took over The Maynard in Grindleford in January last year he could not have foreseen what was around the corner. “We opened in the quietest month of the year. Then we were just getting going when the pandemic struck, confidence was hit and we’re now battling with restrictions,” he said. However Rob had taken on the prestigious premises in rural Derbyshire motivated by a strong philosophy that he and his team had to be innovative in everything they did with the business. He commented: “The Maynard has always had potential. It just needed to be brought into the modern day. This applied to everything from service through to food. We’ve had a full refurbishment and added nine bedrooms.” This innovative spirit has led Rob to introduce a new twist to his food offering: a takeaway dinner menu on Fridays and Saturdays, afternoon teas Fridays to Sundays plus Sunday lunches. “This is obviously helping with some damage limitation,” explained Rob. “It’s not easy to sustain a business like ours in these difficult times. It helps to pay some bills, keeps us in the minds of customers and most importantly keeps us all sane!” We opted for the takeaway Sunday lunch comprising: sirloin of beef (£13), chicken (£12) and vegetarian wellington (£10). Once the food had been collected in impressive Maynard branded cloth bags all that was required was a little reheating to deliver a great family roast. Loin of pork is also on offer at £12. The meat was tender and flavoursome, especially the

W

chicken, as you would expect coming from New Close Farm – otherwise known as The Ginger Butchers in Bakewell. We also enjoyed duck fat roast potatoes, honey roast root vegetables, braised red cabbage, delicious cauliflower cheese plus gravy and Yorkshire puddings. We even had a little room for very special homemade chocolate brownies and bread and butter pudding (both £3.50). All fruit and vegetables come from Winster Foods. The whole experience added up to a great way to enjoy a hassle free and very enjoyable Sunday lunch.

BROCCO KITCHEN

f memory serves me correctly, Brocco was one of the first restaurants to adapt their menu and offer takeaways during the first lockdown last year. Now we’re back in the same situation, their eat at home offering continues. And what a treat it is. Brocco‘s weekly Friday night takeaway deal is the real star three courses and a bottle of wine for two for £48 - but you can also indulge in their afternoon teas (Saturdays) and Sunday lunches (fortnightly). We opted for the Friday night dinner, which had a MiddleEastern theme on this occasion, with a bottle of red (a very good sangiovese). Brocco offer a delivery service within a five-mile radius or you can collect from the restaurant, as I did, between 4-6pm. All the food was clearly labelled and packaged in foil cartons and came with a set of straightforward instructions. Once home, we put salads, flatbreads and dessert to one side before turning our attention to our starters. Cuminspiced lamb meatballs and veggie balls (we chose one meat,

I

56 www.sheffieldvibe.com

one veggie option) were both served with a red pepper and tomato sauce and went straight into the oven in their cartons to heat gently at 180ºC for 8-10 minutes. When almost ready, we placed our harissa-spiced spatchcock chicken into the same oven to cook for 18-20 minutes, before tucking into our starters, which were both excellent. The sauce had a real piquancy and paired well both the lamb and veggie balls. Whilst the chicken was finishing cooking I quickly fried off the harissa-spiced halloumi (you can grill it too), which came vac-packed, and was served with a chicory, pomegranate, walnuts, smoked, herb couscous and yoghurt flatbreads. The chicken was also paired with the couscous and flatbreads, the latter of which we warmed in the oven for a 60 seconds. Dessert came in the form of a Greek orange and honey syrup cake, which we ate straight out of the box. This was definitely a step up from your usual takeaway but well packaged with easy-to-follow instructions and above all, tasty. We loved it.

TAKEAWAYS

HOPPER he weather outside is frightful, so my food best be delightful because I need it be. And if you’re feeling the same then you’re probably doing what I’m doing and looking for a new favourite takeaway. And I’ve found one that’s fantastically different to the usual places. Hopper on Ecclesall Road is an independent, neighbourhood favourite. Their menu offers a variety of dishes including soups (£4.50-£6), deli sandwiches (£5-£6) and cakes (£3-£4.50). Using only the freshest ingredients they give a new definition to comfort food. Fancying a salad, a pastry and a burger all at once? Go for it. Their menu makes it easy to customise your perfect night-in meal. We ordered, collected (delivery will be available soon) and inhaled a beautifully warming curried parsnip soup with root vegetable crisps and curry oil drizzled over the top. Following this was a hearty sausage and fennel casserole served in a giant Yorkshire pudding, topped with crispy onions and a rich red wine jus, accompanied by a crunchy winter slaw and pomegranate side salad. Despite the big portions we happily ate a dessert of sweet pink grapefruit, pistachio and rosemary polenta cake with a thick pistachio crust and smooth maple cream. Brownies and cakes are a speciality at Hopper so naturally we treated ourselves to a rich raspberry brownie too. It’s cold outside, we need the extra calories to stay warm and you can’t argue with science. So put on your thickest socks, pull up the menu and let Hopper wow you.

ZIZZONA his was our first experience of Italian pizzeria, Zizzona, which has proved an excellent addition to the Woodseats area, and very good it was too. After phoning our order through, our pizzas and accompaniments were on our kitchen table within 20 minutes - now that’s speedy service. Chesterfield Road-based Zizzona use 100 per cent authentic Italian ingredients, along with locally sourced produce, for their pizzas and it shows. San Marzano tomato sauce, mozzarella fior di latte and those delicious wood-fired bases all worked together in perfect harmony and were reminiscent of pizza I’d eaten in Puglia on a recent holiday (now, that seems like a distant memory). My two children, fresh from home-schooling, shared a Margherita (£7.45) while my wife and I chose a Funghi Prosciutto (£9.95) and Rustica (£10.95). The latter came on a Margherita base with the former topped with prosciutto cotto (ham), chestnut mushrooms, Italian olives and extra virgin olive oil. The Rustica was topped with gorgonzola, spianata picante (salami), chorizo, roasted peppers, red onion and fresh basil. I particularly liked the subtle note of gorgonzola on the Rustica pizza whilst the smokiness of the chorizo and spiciness of the salami added plenty of flavour. We chose a Rucolina salad (3.95), with wild rocket, cherry tomatoes, parmesan shavings, balsamic reduction and extra virgin olive oil, and marinated olives (£2.95) as accompaniments.

With almost 20 pizzas on the menu, including calzone, and three different bases (red, white or vegan/gluten-free) you’re spoilt for choice. Zizzona also offer desserts to takeaway, which we regrettably declined but was just as well as we struggled to finish what we had ordered. On the plus side, it was still as delicious the next day for lunch. Zizzona is open for delivery (check their website to see if you qualify) and collection.Visit www.zizzona-orders.co.uk to find out more.

HEALTH

Extracting the goodness JUICING IS A QUICK AND EASY WAY OF GIVING THE BODY A SUPER DOSE OF NUTRIENTS. RICHARD ABBEY GETS SOME EXPERT ADVICE ON WHERE TO START. e honest, over the last 12 months or so, have you given thought to what you eat and how much you’re consuming of certain types of foods? Have you been inspired to turn to a plant-based diet or just cut down on the amount of meat you eat? Maybe you’ve cut back on alcohol or tried to increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in your diet.Whatever your choices – and reasons – there’s one unifying theme and that’s taking positive steps to improve your health and wellbeing. As we move into spring there’s no better time to take those positive steps even further by giving yourself a dose of goodness in the form of juicing. Juicing is a process that extracts the juices from fresh fruits and vegetables, usually stripping away most of the solid matter, including the seeds and pulp, from whole fruits and vegetables. This results in a liquid that contains most of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants naturally present in the whole fruit or vegetable. “A simple way of describing juicing is

B

60 www.sheffieldvibe.com

that it’s a very quick and easy way of giving the body a super dose of nutrients and goodness in a virtually pre-digested form,” said Nick Ledger, part of UK Juicers, a York-based family business that was one of the first companies to bring specialist juicers for the health enthusiast to the world of online shopping in the UK.They specialise in high quality juicers, blenders, food dryers, sprouters, seeds and other items for a healthy lifestyle. Juicing is sometimes done to detox but can supplement your current diet. “The benefits are as mentioned as above, you’re giving your body an excellent dose of nutrition. Fresh vegetable juice is packed full of vitamins, minerals and live enzymes,” added Nick. And it’s easy to get started, as Nick explains: “To get started you simply need a fruit and vegetable juicer. We tend to specialise in masticating (or ‘cold press’) juicers. These work at a low speed, gently crushing the produce and giving a nutrient dense juice that minimises oxidation and allows the juice to remain fresh for longer. The slow speed also

makes them capable of juicing leafy greens with excellent results.” Juicing methods vary, from squeezing fruit by hand to motor-driven juicers. Two common types of juicers include centrifugal – these juicers grind fruits and vegetables into pulp through a highspeed spinning action with a cutting blade. The spinning also separates the juice from the solids. Cold-press juicers, as mentioned by Nick, crush and press fruits and vegetables much more slowly to obtain as much juice as possible. The nutritional quality of juice obtained from both types of juicers is similar. Once you’ve got your equipment sorted, there are a whole host of recipes to try, including this favourite one from Nick: “A really good introduction to the benefits of juicing is carrot, apple and ginger. Juice two apples with a 1cm slice of fresh ginger and make up to one pint with carrots. It’s delicious!” On this page you’ll find some more recipes from Nick to try.Visit www.ukjuicers.com to find out more.

RECIPES: Carrot, Apple & Ginger 8 Medium Carrots 2 Apples (Coxes, Royal Gala or Braeburn) Slice of root Ginger (to taste) Carrot, Apple & Ginger makes a delicious starting point for those who have never tried vegetable juices. It has superb nutritional qualities: carrots are a good source of Vitamin A and Beta Carotenes, providing anti-ageing and cancer-fighting antioxidants. Apples have an abundance of pectin which forms a gel that breaks down toxins in the intestines and helps maintain a healthy bowel function. Ginger is an excellent tonic for the entire digestive system. In fact, Carrot & Apple is a staple drink of the Gerson Institute of Cancer Therapy. This drink can be easily made with any fruit & vegetable juicer. Carrots need to form the majority of the juice otherwise the flavour of the apples will dominate. The ginger provides a nice touch of spice, but use it sparingly - it’s powerful stuff! ***

Carrot, Parsley, Spinach & Celery 4 Carrots 1 Small Handful of Flat Leaf Parsely 100g Fresh Spinach 2 Sticks of Celery Parsley, particularly the flat leaf kind rather than the curly, provides a very potent herbal juice. As such, it should never be taken in too large a quantity. Its properties can help maintain healthy blood vessels and a normal function of the adrenal and thyroid glands, while also acting as a diuretic. The combination is believed to provide excellent qualities for regenerating and healing tissues within the body.

juicing, but if you want more zest in the drink, leave some peel on. ***

Carrot, Greens & Hemp Milk 40-50g of Hemp seeds (preferably germinated) 4 Medium Carrots 100g Spinach 2 Sticks of Celery Fresh Rosemary (optional) Hemp is one of the most nutritionally complete foods available and is rich in Omega 3, 6 and 9 essential fatty acids. It is also an excellent source of protein. To get the best out of hemp it needs to be thoroughly washed and it is often a good idea to soak the seeds for 8-12 hours to start germination, and perhaps even to sprout them as this can increase nutrient availability. This drink is best made with a twin gear juicer. A small amount of hemp should be placed in the feeding chamber and fed down with harder produce. To really break down the hemp it is best to re-feed the pulp once or twice. ***

Wheatgrass Zinger 1oz Fresh Wheatgrass Juice 1 Apple ½ a Lemon Slice of Ginger (to taste) A Wheatgrass Zinger provides an excellent

introduction to wheatgrass and may be preferable for those who aren’t too keen on the intensity of straight wheatgrass juice. Simply juice the wheatgrass in the appropriate juicer followed by the remaining ingredients. ***

Pineapple, Mango, Apple, Lime & Ginger Smoothie 4 Rings of Fresh Pineapple 1 Mango 5 Apples 1 Lime Slice of Ginger (to taste) 4 Healthy Dollops of Fresh Yoghurt The combination of pineapple, mango, lime, ginger and yoghurt has to be tasted to be believed: it’s rather special. Even more so if you’re lucky enough to find a supply of Indian or Pakistani mangoes. This drink serves serves. Prepare and freeze the mango and pineapple. Add to a blender followed by the juiced apples, lime and ginger. Finally, add the yoghurt, blend well and serve immediately.

***

Apple, Pear & Lime 3 Apples (Coxes, Gala or Braeburn) 2 Pears ½ a Lime This juice is simple but refreshing and delicious. As well as containing carotenes, pectin, potassium and Vitamin C from the apples, the pears provide an excellent source of soluble fibre. Simply juice the ingredients in any combination. Peel the lime before www.sheffieldvibe.com 61

What happens when the stamp duty holiday ends? CAROLINE MURRAY, HEAD OF PROPERTY AT GRAYSONS, TAKES A CLOSER LOOK. ast July’s stamp duty holiday announcement helped bring about an amazing transformation for the nation’s housing market. It had been effectively shut for weeks following the first lockdown in March 2020. As a result of the stamp duty holiday, demand for housing was soon outstripping supply and a mini-boom saw prices rise to an all-time high in the second half of 2020 – all this despite the on-going pandemic, thousands losing their jobs and tens of thousands more facing uncertain futures whilst they were left on furlough. There was increased demand for conveyancing services as buyers could save anything up to £15,000 in tax if they completed the sale before the 31 March 2021 deadline. Transaction numbers rose significantly across the country. Data from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) showed that 115,190 property sales went through in November 2020, up a staggering 19 per cent year-on-year. But are months of growth about to unravel if Chancellor Rishi Sunak keeps his word and ends the stamp duty holiday in March? When you compare the experience of the housing market during the pandemic to that of many other industries you have to say it has fared pretty well. The sector had all but ground to a halt following the March 2020 shutdown with estate agents forced to close. Viewings in person had substantially

L

66 www.sheffieldvibe.com

reduced and moves were only permitted to go ahead in limited circumstances. But once the housing market was given the green light to re-open in May and the stamp duty holiday was announced, pent-up demand for property and a rush to make the tax savings quickly made the sector busier than ever. The industry was fast to adapt to a new and socially distanced way of working. Graysons, for example, has been providing a far more digitally based conveyancing service with the majority of correspondence now sent by email. We have been conducting meetings by Zoom or Teams to ensure client safety through the pandemic. We saw a big upturn in enquiries and instructions as Rightmove reported a staggering 67 per cent rise in properties going through the buying and selling process in October 2020 compared to the same period in 2019. The situation was further bolstered by low interest rates and the availability of a range of mortgage products which continued to make it a good time to buy – providing your financial position was secure in an uncertain economic climate. But there’s now a race to complete ongoing sales before the deadline. Parties, understandably, are becoming nervous as to whether they will actually make the savings on stamp duty. Much is dependent on lenders and other professionals involved in the sale and purchase process, not just solicitors. As we edge closer to the predicted end of the stamp duty holiday pressure is

mounting to extend it. The market is already slowing with prices starting to fall back. A petition was started last October that lobbied for an additional six-month extension to the stamp duty holiday following cross-party support for the move. Enough signatures were quickly gathered to force a recent debate. Caroline Murray, head of the property department at Graysons, said: “The housing market boom resulting from the stamp duty holiday has been hugely beneficial to the sector. But the likely knock-on effect of its end could be the undoing of all that work. Hundreds of transactions across the country could fall at the final hurdle, which will have a drastic effect on the market.” Recent figures show 75 per cent of brokers backing an extension of the stamp duty holiday. Many are now predicting a triple whammy of issues for the housing market if the stimulus of the stamp duty holiday comes to an end on 31 March - a glut of transactions falling through; falling house prices and a sharp fall in property investment. BUSINESS

Lisa Pogson Airmaster

Rochelle Gilburn Gilburn Investment Group

Airmaster design, install and provide aftercare for heating, cooling, plumbing, ventilation and associated services. As managing director, Lisa supports a great team of experts to provide great customer service. “We like to deliver on time, on budget and get great feedback,” she says. Women who have inspired her include Elaine RobsonBurrell (her first full time boss); Julie Kenny, Chair of Wentworth Preservation Trust; Jackie Freeborn (Skincare Yorkshire and Custodian of the Rotherham Story) and Deborah Bullivant, Grimm & Co. Lisa adds:“There is an increasing role for women in many engineering, construction and manufacturing, rail – to name but a few – sectors. There is a skills shortage and not so many people coming in to these areas. So, time for women to go for it. “I work with a coach, Lisa Walker, and her mantra is ‘Get Clear, Get Confident’. I think that is key. Keep focussed and keep your confidence and my mum always says ‘treat others as you want to be treated, and you can’t go far wrong’. “In fact, I was a Highly Commended at the Athena Awards a few years ago and the eight principles there are ones that are very relevant.”

As a woman in business, there is a lot of pressure for us to look a certain way and a lot of that pressure comes from ourselves. I was set a challenge recently in a public speaking room on social media sensation, Clubhouse. The challenge was to start recording video content. It was something I had wanted to do for ages. One of my big excuses was the fact that I didn’t have the time to be wasting on getting ready for a video. I needed to remove the excuse. So instead of getting dressed up for the video, I recorded it as my authentic self. I was wearing my favourite Formula 1 hoodie and had my hair scraped back with no make-up. I talked about the real me who loves to get dressed up for special occasions but spends most of my time in a hoodie and leggings. Running a business and being a single mum to a four and six-year-old is tough enough at the best of times without the additional pressure of trying to look a certain way. The response was amazing. I got great feedback from my LinkedIn connections and even inspired other women to go out and do the same. The thing with social and business that people can often forget, is that people buy from people. Let someone get to know you and when they need your service, they will remember you and buy from you.

Leading ladies WE FOCUS ON THESE LOCAL BUSINESS SUCCESS STORIES. Sam Round S11 Carpets “My passion for carpets started at a well-known, high-end independent retailer in Sheffield, and from there I worked my way up to being an area business manager for a luxury carpet manufacturer, before moving on to be a commercial flooring representative for a well-respected company in Yorkshire,” said Sam Round, owner of S11 Carpets and Flooring. “As the owner of S11 Carpets I pretty much do it all. “It’s important to me to provide a top class service throughout. I personally go out to visit customers in their own homes and will give any design advice and assistance I can, as well as measuring up. “The shop celebrated its tenth anniversary during lockdown last year and covers the S11 area as well Dore, Totley and Fulwood where we have recently completed some big design-led projects.” “My advice to other women would be to work hard and be smart, no one is entitled to anything without putting in the right amount of effort and gaining experience along the way,” concludes Sam.

Jess Welburn The Mobile Veterinary Company Jess is a veterinary surgeon and runs a small mobile veterinary clinic, treating pets in their own homes. “We aim to make the veterinary experience as stress free as possible for both owner and pet,” she said. “We offer a very personal service and are able to dedicate a lot more time and energy to each client than your average practice.” The Mobile Veterinary Company carries out everything from vaccinations and health checks to diagnosis of illness and injury. In future, Jess would like to extend its services to cover more of Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and even the rest of the country but for the moment is focused on giving the best service possible. Jess had wanted to be vet for as long as she can remember and achieved her dream in 2012. Does she have any advice? “Go for it! Three years ago my business was just an idea, and while I was confident that the model was a good one and that the numbers added up, I was still anxious that I was taking a risk. I now look back on the decision to quit my job and start my own business as the best thing I’ve ever done. Always do your research, always have a backup plan, but go for it! www.sheffieldvibe.com 67

Bright and bold ENGAGEMENT RINGS ARE NOT JUST LIMITED TO DIAMONDS. PA JEWELLERY LOOKS AT THE POPULARITY OF COLOURED GEMSTONES. lthough diamonds are by far the most popular choice for engagement rings, coloured gemstones are also selected by many couples. There is huge variety available, and you can choose a colour or gem type that has special significance to you. Opting for a coloured gemstone can also be very cost-effective or may give you a bold look that you cannot achieve with a diamond. The most popular coloured gemstone for engagement rings is sapphire, which has a lot to do with Princess Diana’s famous sapphire and diamond cluster, now worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, sparking a trend for this beautiful gem that has passed from one generation to the next. Although mostly thought of as a blue gem, sapphires actually come in all the colours of the rainbow (except red because a ‘red sapphire’ is the gem we know as ruby – both gems are the mineral corundum). A richly saturated, ‘royal’ blue is generally the most

desirable and we often set these into halo or three stone designs for our customers, with diamonds providing additional sparkle. The blue of sapphire is an easy colour to wear (think of blue jeans – they go with everything!) but the shade you choose is really up to you – some of our customers prefer really dark stones while others want something in a pretty, pastel blue. It is worth remembering that diamonds are not popular simply because of advertising and expense; they are also an exceptionally practical choice for a ring that most of us want to wear every day and any other gem type that you choose will wear over time, softening the edges of the facets and scratching the surface, making the gem appear duller. However, some will maintain their brightness more than others and as sapphire is the next hardest natural gemstone it is a great choice. Sapphires are tough and durable, and although they will inevitably become scratched over time, they usually maintain a beautiful appearance for many years.

Before purchasing a coloured gemstone engagement ring (sapphire or otherwise), it is definitely worth consulting an experienced jeweller before making your choice as having more information about the properties of the gem now can help avoid disappointment later. Many coloured gemstones are subject to treatments that enhance their appearance and some of these can negatively impact the durability of the stone, so always check before you buy. You can browse sapphire, and other coloured gemstone, rings on our website, where you can also find more information about a variety of gems in our blog. If you have any questions about gemstone engagement rings email gems@pajewellery.com and one of our gemmologists will be able to help.
