Do you need a hero?
Whether you’re looking to buy, sell or rent, a super service is par for the course from these local property heroes.
I
s it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s the Morfitt Smith team! If, on Friday 13 May, you see the strange sight of estate agents going about their everyday business dressed as superheroes, fear not. They’re not finally revealing their true identities but rather showing their support for Hallam FM’s Superhero Day in aid of the radio station’s charity Cash for Kids. As headline sponsors of this special day, Morfitt Smith will be raising as much money and awareness as possible for the charity, which helps disabled, disadvantaged and vulnerable children in the local area. “We love getting involved and being a bit silly to support such a worthy cause,” said Morfitt Smith director Paul Batty. “Our costumes are now a daily topic of conversation – sales negotiator Jill Reeves has been planning her outfit since Christmas!” There will be plenty of fun activities taking place on the day, so keep a look out on social media for all the details nearer the time. If you want to get involved with your own Superhero Day, visit www.hallamfm/charity/superheroday for all you need to know. In the run up to the 13th, area manager Kaye Orwin and sales negotiator Anthony Bescoby will also be pitting themselves against each other for the cause. Whoever raises the most money for Cash for Kids will be put forward for a skydive this summer –
WESTSIDE 26
and they’re both desperate to win. “They’ll be using their own initiative to see how much they can raise and to convince people that they’re worthy of the most donations,” said Paul. “We can’t wait to see what lengths they’ll go to.” While dressing up as superheroes in the name of charity might seem like just a bit of fun – it’s not all based on fiction. Since opening their first office on Middlewood Road three years ago, they’ve established themselves as superheroes of the Sheffield property scene and have helped
homeowners across the city to buy, sell and let their homes. This month sees the first birthday of the Banner Cross branch, and the Crookes office – which opened last September – is already making waves in S10. Alongside their passion and enthusiasm for property, many of the staff also have an impressive amount of experience. Director and valuer John Morfitt has been an estate agent for more than 30 years, and Kaye has been in the industry for over 20 years. “We must be doing something right because the company is growing year on year and you can see our sales and lettings boards popping up all over Sheffield,” said Paul. “We are marketing a great variety of properties – including a host of new builds in Burncross, Stocksbridge and Stannington – and are proud to tailor our packages to suit a range of budgets and requirements.” So while you cheer along the Morfitt Smith superheroes in May, don’t forget that beneath the costume lies a wealth of experience – and a super ability to help you with all of your property needs. Give them a call today on 0114 232 1764 to see how they can come to your rescue. Although there are hundreds of nifty storage options available, sometimes it’s just not enough – like when you require a whole new room, for example. Whether it’s office space, a workshop, or a home cinema, instead of dealing with the hassle and cost of a house extension, why not build a room in your garden instead? Dore Garden Offices are Sheffield’s only CALLThe TOcompany PRE BOOK garden building specialists. was established in 2011 by Adam Reynolds, who decided after 15 years as a sculptor, to swap metal for wood and use his skills to create beautiful spaces within gardens. “It all started from one photo; I built my own garden office and from that I got one job and then another three after that – then the business was formed.” Adam has recently formed a new team, which includes Ben Grafton, a former artist,
who is now project managing on site, ably assisted by Ian Holbrook, a former teacher and George White, also a trained sculptor – both of whom are talented woodworkers. Together they offer a comprehensive landscaping package and a bespoke tailormade garden room building service – whatever you have in mind, they can create it. And if reading this conjures up images of draughty, leaking sheds, then stop right there, because everything – from the insulation and roof, to the doors, window and internal finish OR BOOK ONLINE AToutdoor build – is completed to make the feel just like another room in your home. For those looking for ultimate luxury, there are timber options such as Cedar and Larch. And for the interior, choose from an impressive selection, including LED down lights, under floor heating, internet/phone/television cable, double entrances, electricity and UPVC doors and windows. Although they still do build many garden
offices, since they began four years ago the company has also constructed garden musical workshops, many children’s hobbit holes and art workspaces. The possibilities are endless. Dore Garden Offices serve any area within 30 miles of Dore and each project typically takes around three weeks to complete. If you require a professional service offering a cost effective, high-spec finish, then Dore Garden Offices is just what you’re looking for. Testimonial: “Adam and his team provided an excellent service from design to build, and worked incredibly hard to get our room finished on time. We are delighted with the finished result.” Katherine Bull, Sheffield.
YOUR LOCAL GARDEN ROOM SPECIALIST We provide low cost alternative to extending by building a garden office or outdoor living zones. We have also built outdoor painting studios, storage spaces and split use spaces (office/store) but the uses for our buildings are endless. • Our garden spaces are left ready to move in to and are fully plastered. We can also design and build interiors. • Our buildings are high specification and have lots of options for making them even more special such as underfloor heating, wood burners, LED lighting. • They are insulated and can be used all year round. • We can also source recycled doors and windows – this improves the carbon footprint but also gives savings over new UPVC or wood doors and windows. • All our roofs use EPDM rubber with a 20 year lifespan and are enviro-ready enabling fabulous grass or sedum green coverings. • Rooms start at £3750 for our 2.4m x 1.8m mini office. Any size is possible but popular sizes include: 3m x 2.4m - £5000 and 4m x 3m - £7200

Find the right balance and get back on track at the new Sheffield Vertigo & Balance Centre.
T
his month the Sheffield Vertigo & Balance Centre opens its door to people who are experiencing vertigo and balance problems. This is a new multidisciplinary clinic for diagnosis and management of disorders of the human balance system. When things go wrong the consequences can be devastating for the person and their family. This is where the skills of the clinic staff in both the diagnosis and rehabilitation of people with complex clinical presentations is fundamental. Applying the best research evidence to place you at the centre of treatment and rehabilitation is key in producing excellent results. Sheffield Vertigo and Balance Centre is comprised of specialists dedicated to diagnose, assess and manage problems in a focussed and systematic way: Dr Soumit Dasgupta (consultant audiovestibular physician), Karen Stevens (physiotherapist), Chris Bowes (audiologist), Cheryl Thompson (audiologist – tinnitus specialist) and Kay Wright (audiologist – stress management). The new centre is based within the existing Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic in Broomhill. Most people do self-refer to the centre and staff liaise with medical practitioners after initial assessment and the start of rehabilitation. However, referrals from GPs, other medical or technical personnel are accepted. The initial appointment will be a triaging appointment where a decision will be made as to the complexity of the case. However, the majority may be complex cases where they will be assessed in detail by the consultant and a management plan formulated. Following this, a detailed laboratory assessment might be undertaken. This is done to pick up the site and intensity of the problem for dedicated vestibular or other rehabilitation. Some patients will also need a cognitive approach to address the illness cognition or acceptance issue which often plays a crucial role in the overall perception of balance. Vertigo and all forms of balance disorders are complex and a team approach is fundamental to a successful outcome Please ring the clinic if you want to discuss your specific requirements with a member of the team on 0114 267 1223 or visit www.hallamshirephysiotherapy.com. T
he rumble of hooves and the roar of excited crowds echoing in the beautiful Derbyshire Peak District can only mean one thing: that’s right; the equestrian extravaganza of the Dodson and Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials is back for another year. Three jam-packed days (13-15 May) of thrilling world-class riding competitions, elegant dressage, exhilarating cross country and endless activities for all the family to enjoy are what’s to be expected from this year’s bigger and better event. Residing in the heart of the Peaks, the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire welcome all to their magnificent grounds to experience the highlight of the equestrian calendar. The couple are renowned for their love all of things horses: the Duke has served as chairman of Ascot for over a decade and the Duchess owns many prize-winning animals, making Chatsworth the perfect location for the event. Showcasing some of the world’s leading horses and riders, the weekend attracts spectators from far and wide. Previous winners include number one in the 2013 FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) Rankings Andrew Nicholson, Chatsworth record breaker Pippa Funnel and William Fox-Pitt. The riders and the horses take centre stage at this amazing event – but the fun doesn’t stop there. Throughout the weekend, there are also a bundle of exciting activities for all the family to enjoy within the beautiful grounds of Chatsworth. This includes a sheep show. What more could you want than dancing sheep arriving at their podiums to their own theme tunes, before an insight into how their wool transforms into a jumper with a special sheep shearing demonstration? These sheep are

high contenders for stealing the limelight from the horses and are not to be missed. If horses are more your cup of tea, join the ponies and their riders for the British Scurry and Trials Driving. This tricky obstacle course of cones, barriers, flags, arches and ramps for the ponies takes place all against the clock. We’re a nation of pooch lovers and Chatsworth are putting on several adorable doggy activities. If you want to get involved, the have-a-go dog show and agility course is definitely for you. All dogs, whatever their size or breed, take part and join in the fun. There will also be a Mullenscote Gun Dog display, a Dog and Duck show and a chance to meet the super friendly canine rescue dogs of the UK Rescue Bears and perhaps even sneak in a quick bear hug with one of the amazing life-savers. Away from the arena, there is a children’s entertainment area with mini Land Rovers, face painting, farmyard animals and a giant bouncy castle. Plus over 100 high quality trade stands ranging from county fashion and equestrian products to crafts and delicious food. The Dodson and Horrell International Chatsworth Horse Trials provides three full days of thrilling horse championships combined with stimulating activities for all the family to enjoy within the beautiful Chatsworth grounds, no matter what your age. Emily Parker riding Diamond Sundance
Your Guide to Eventing: The event consists of three disciplines showcasing the skill and determination of both the horse and rider. The dressage, cross country and show jumping are all designed to test the competitors in a variety of different ways. The winner will demonstrate that they can successfully master each discipline and move flawlessly between them, which demands immense skill, patience and determination to tally up the least penalties at the end of the weekend. Dressage Don’t be fooled by the calm nature of the dressage stage of the competition – even though it may appear easy, it is arguably the most difficult discipline. ‘Horse ballet’, as it’s also known, requires the rider to display precise control over the horse as it performs a sequence of movements, including trot, pirouettes and gaits. The judges award points for grace and fluidity, and the aim is to demonstrate perfect synchronisation between the horse and rider. Cross Country Considered by many to be the highlight of the horse trials, cross country requires speed, power and nerve and definitely isn’t short of any action. At Chatsworth, horse and rider race against the clock around the park on the banks of the River Derwent. Filled with impressive fences and solid obstacles – including some of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s hand-carved wooden sculptures means this course is not one for the faint hearted. The race requires not only skill but a fair amount of courage, too. Show Jumping The final stage of the eventing weekend takes place in the arena and sees competitors tackle fences made from brightly coloured poles, meaning any wobble or knock will not be missed. As ever, athleticism and control are vital as penalties are given for every second over the allotted time, horse disobedience, knocking of a pole and failing to complete the course in a set order – a truly tense ending to the weekend.

P
atricia Clifton became the event director of the Dodson & Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials three years ago and has strived to make the event a fantastic family day out with top entertainment. As well as well as organising Chatsworth Horse Trials, Patricia works with FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) developing eventing in Sub-Saharan Africa and is also on the FEI eventing committee, where plans for the 2020 Olympics are well underway. We caught up with Patricia on globetrotting, sport development and what’s in store for this year’s show.
Sarah Ennis, Pippa Funnel & Emily King
What has changed since you became events director? Well, we’ve got quite a few new additions to the programme – in fact every year we’ve brought in some new attractions and general event upgrades. That has been really exciting, we have grown hugely, but for me, the most important thing is that the team that I started with is still in place, because they do all the work. What’s new this year? This year we have what we call arena eventing, which is very much aimed at amateur riders who want a chance to compete at Chatsworth. It’s a short show jumping course with a 90cm class and 100cm class followed by a short cross country within an arena and it’s the first time we have run it. We thought a lot of people would love the experience of riding at Chatsworth so we hope they will like it. We have another new competition this year, the Event Rider Master Series, is being hosted by Dodson & Horrell, which we hope will attract the top riders in the world. It will run over six events throughout the UK this year and Chatsworth is the first leg. In 2017 it will extend to Europe. The winner will be the Event Rider Master Champion but they will also win significant prize money. How do you prepare for a show? Planning for the show starts almost before the event has finished and it is a year-long process, although not full time. We consider what worked and didn’t work and what we need to change to improve it and then we think about what added value can we give our visitors. What have been the highlights? We have had really good weather the last two years, which makes me very nervous for this year! I think the highlight is to see really happy people; that is what it’s all about. Why should people come to Chatsworth Horse Trials?
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
I think we have a really good offering; apart from horses the dog agility and show, the Newfoundland Rescue Bears and the sheep show are all back by popular demand. In addition, we will have Paws For Thought and the dog and duck show as well as a lot of other activities for children. There are food stalls, and shops, and we’ve got the top riders in the world – we are expecting a large percentage of the top 150 riders, especially in this Olympic year, we hope they will use Chatsworth as part of their preparation for Rio – and there’s the really nice addition of more amateur riders. I think it’s going to be great. What other projects are you involved with? I am still very involved with the FEI development programme, it has been a huge success for the FEI. My particular region, which is Sub-Saharan Africa, has the most incredible people who are working really hard to get the sport of eventing going in their countries. This particular project was supported by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and that actually finishes this year. But because we have made so much progress, I am really keep to find a way to keep promoting and supporting it, so we
don’t get these countries going then just drop them. I am also on the FEI eventing committee, so I am very involved in the 2020 Olympic programme, which aims to try new and innovative ways of bringing our sport to the public. We are working very closely with broadcasters and presenters to create as much excitement around eventing as possible, while keeping the integrity of our sport. What does the future hold for you at Chatsworth? As long as they want me I will stay there, but you never know what is going to happen next. I am still travelling a lot with eventing to all parts of the globe, so there’s always an issue with finding enough time to do all of these things. But for now, I am at Chatsworth and we just hope it carries on going well. When you do decide to hand the reins over, what legacy do you hope to leave behind? I suppose I would want to have helped improve the event and bring new things in that the public and visitors find appealing and to keep a good happy team. I always fear letting people down, so if can manage not to do that I’ll be happy.

WS Travel The spiaggia dei conigli – or Rabbit Beach in Lampedusa
Welcome to the tropics of the Med Discover a paradise setting – and the world’s most beautiful beach – just a short flight from Malta.
I
f you are searching for the most beautiful beach in the world, a visit to La Baia Del Conigli on Lampedusa is an absolute must. It is a true marvel, in a dreamlike setting, surrounded by a magical atmosphere with incredible marine life and water whose clarity and shades of blue attract visitors from all over the world. Lampedusa is one of the Pelagian Islands and living proof that even in these days of mass tourism, unspoilt gems can still be unearthed. The Pelagian Islands are a true gem in the

Mediterranean, and a short 25-minute flight from Malta will take you to this paradise setting. And despite being declared the world’s most beautiful beach by Trip Advisor, La Baia Del Conigli (or Rabbits as it is known) is still a delightfully tranquil haven for those who prefer to steer clear of the tourist hordes. The Pelagian Islands are visited by a limited number of tourists and apart from the month of August they are rarely busy. But for those in the know, this is a muchloved destination, due to a combination of magnificent coastline, outstanding awardwinning beaches, and unique beautiful scenery.
How to get there Spatravel.co.uk is the first tour operator in the UK to offer the unique opportunity to visit the Pelagian Islands this summer. You can be among the first to visit and swim in the clearest waters of the Mediterranean. They have exclusively packaged two fantastic eight-night holidays that combine Malta and the magical Pelagian Islands. Both packages offer four nights in Malta and four nights in Lampedusa. The packages include return flights from the UK to Malta and Malta to Lampedusa, transfers and

accommodation on a half board basis. In the Pelagian Islands time stands still. Lampedusa’s clear waters have an abundance of fish, perfect for those who like to swim, scuba or snorkel or just relax on the beach. Everything is close at hand and renting a motorised boat is a great way of exploring and discovering the many beautiful beaches, coves and tiny bays. With delicious Italian cuisine and a chilled-out 1970s/80s vibe, this is the ultimate relaxing break.
Life’s a beach The island’s northern and western coast is rather high and inaccessible, while the eastern and south-eastern shores boast magnificent sandy beaches. From the smallest and most hidden to the largest and most popular, the Pelagian beaches are numerous and welcoming. The splendid coves of Cala Pisana and Cala Uccello open onto the glistening sea, while the Calas Spugna and Maluk lie on the island’s east. Cala Greca is miniscule and covered in whiter-than-white sand. One of the secrets of the island is Cala Galera, accessible by passing through the island’s characteristic low, rocky gullies on the water. See the beach on the socalled Dead Sea, where the water is super calm, and the same-named Grotto. Also remarkable are the spectacular and buzzing Cala Francese and the famous Guitgia Beach, which has the nearest hotels and is accessible
by public transport. From here you can reach Cala Croce and the beach on Cala Madonna, along with Porto N’Tone, a tiny beach with fine, white sand ideal for families and children. On the island’s southern side, Cala Pulcino and countless grottoes can be found.
both day and night. Search for the underwater statue Madonna Del Mare, 46 feet deep and surrounded by burrows for octopus and sargo fish.
Sail on
If you are more of a land lover, you can walk the trails that run up to the island’s foremost three peaks – Monte Rosso, featuring a cultivated crater, Monte Nero and Monte Vulcano.
A private charter small boat ride around the Pelagians is the best way to appreciate the beauty of its beaches, coves and tiny harbours. The sea’s clarity and the brilliant seafloor, abundant with flora and fauna, is superb for scuba-divers and snorkelers, who can choose from a wide array of diving spots,
“In the Pelagian Islands time stands still. Lampedusa’s clear waters have an abundance of fish, perfect for those who like to swim, scuba or snorkel or just relax on the beach.”
Take a stroll
Alfresco dining – Lampedusa style During the hottest nights of the summer, make an effort to attend the many celebrations happening on the island’s beaches, including bonfires, spaghetti cookouts and barbecues, and musical performances. Taste the fish cous cous, a mix of African and Sicilian flavours; the Pelagian version features shrimp, lobster and seafood. Accompanied with delicious chilled white wine, it’s a truly memorable feast.
Facts and Figures Taking their name from the Greek word for ‘high sea’, The Pelagian Islands are closer to Malta than their administrative home in southern Italy. Belonging to the Sicilian province of Agrigento and situated 150km west of Malta, this group of three islands comprises of Lampione, Linosa and the largest of the three, Lampedusa. In 2002 the islands became a nature reserve due to the nesting sites on Lampedusa and Linosa of the rare loggerhead sea turtles, which now attract nature lovers from all over the world. WS Eating Out
Top of the class
From left: Matthew Hurt, Hannah Quarmby, James Grey and Laney Smith
Lunch at The Schoolrooms is an indulgent treat, writes Stephanie Burns.
A
t this time of year, a mere break in the clouds is enough to warrant a dash into the countryside – let alone a full blazing sun. So when a mild lunchtime presented itself, we jumped in the car and headed out to Bradfield to see if one of its well-loved businesses really was as good as we’d heard. Since The Schoolrooms’ original managers took charge again earlier this year, the café/deli/butchery has once again been winning rave reviews for its local menu that is almost entirely made by hand by head chef James Grey and sous Laney Smith. Out front, Matthew Hurt and Hannah Quarmy provide a friendly and welcoming service. It was the last Friday of half term when we visited and we were lucky to get a seat in the bustling café, which can be found in the eves of the former school. Looking round, our fellow diners were enjoying the weekly special of fish and chips – complete with tartare sauce, pea puree and lemon wedge – for just £5. At almost half the usual price, this is an absolute steal, but we couldn’t help being tempted by some of the menu’s other offerings. It was the steak and Bradfield Brewery ale pie that caught my partner’s eye. Served with seasonal veg, fat chips and rich gravy, and accompanied by a glass of Argentinian Malbec, he made sure this lunchtime treat was as indulgent as possible. With tender meat, a wonderfully crisp puff pastry lid and seriously good chips, the dish was a real hit. I chose a lighter option; the daily deli board. The chunky wooden board came laden
WESTSIDE 88
with homemade ham hock terrine, three artisan cheeses, half a Toppings pork pie, real ale chutney, a tiny Kilner jar of pickled onion, salad with shards of crisp prosciutto, and two thick slices of fresh brown bloomer – most of which is sourced from the deli and butchery downstairs. Every element was great but the star of the show was that terrine; full of flavour and absolutely delicious. To complete the experience, my partner ordered the gooey caramel chocolate fondant, served warm with vanilla Peak District ice cream. It was a fantastic end to his hearty meal and he took great pleasure in scraping every last crumb from the bowl. Meanwhile, I had turned my attentions to the counter’s tantalising selection of fresh cakes, tray bakes and biscuits. I can never resist a fruit scone and when it’s served with Tiptree raspberry jam and light-as-air whipped cream – all the better. As we left, we passed a group of walkers who were basking in the autumn sun out on the terrace, taking full advantage of the unseasonably warm weather. Given the standard of the food at The Schoolrooms, I won’t be waiting for another burst of sunshine to return. Come rain or shine – it’s well worth a visit.
What we ate: Mains Steak and Bradfield Brewery pie, £9 Daily deli board, £8 Dessert Gooey caramel chocolate fondant, £3 Scone with jam and cream, £1.95 Drinks Argentinean Malbec 175ml, £3.80 Luscombe elderflower bubbly, £2 The Schoolrooms Mill Lee Road, Low Bradfield, Sheffield, S6 6LB Tel: 0114 285 1920 www.theschoolrooms.co.uk

Local pick
Chris Wilson finds that there’s still room for proper pub grub – and he’s found just the place.
T
he concept of dining in pubs has changed dramatically over the last decade or so, and I’d be the last person to complain about the fact that elaborate bistrostyle dishes, cooked by chefs with a solid background in high-end restaurants, are now readily available in many venues that used to be run-of-the-mill ale houses. Yes, the gastro-pub has added greatly to our enjoyment of eating out… but there is surely also still a place for good old-fashioned pub grub? The Halsall family certainly believes this to be the case. Over the years they have successfully run pubs in the North Sheffield and Barnsley area, and now their winning formula is helping to revive the fortunes of one of Sheffield’s oldest pubs. The Crown Inn at Totley has a chequered recent past but at nearly 300 years old, with its low ceiling and log fires, this piece of Sheffield history should be cherished. And now, with a choice of hand-pulled beers in the dog-friendly bar, it is offering a cheerful reminder of everything a good local can and should be. The Crown is buzzing again and it seems locals can’t get enough of a food menu that is definitely more grub than gastro. I went for an early Saturday night supper, after failing to get a table in the fully-booked restaurant on Thursday and Friday night. This is retro food heaven, and at keen prices. For example, choose from the pub
WESTSIDE 90
favourites section which includes dishes like fish and chips, steak pie, gammon and pineapple and bangers and mash, and two meals cost £15. Even in posh Totley it seems people appreciate value for money. After sampling the Farmers Blonde, a very well-kept example of my favourite local brew, I started with the homemade soup of the day, wild mushroom, which was fragrant, fresh and served with a swirl of crème fraiche and a hunk of warmed baguette and butter. My companion’s bruschetta, generously topped with toasted cheese and tomato and salad, also won approval.
What we ate: Starters Wild mushroom soup, £3.95 Bruschetta, £4.75 Mains Fillet steak with king prawns, £18.99 Fish platter, £9.95 Desserts Ginger cheesecake, £3.95 Waffle with chocolate sauce and ice cream, £3.95 Drinks Two pints Farmers Blonde, £6.40 Latte, £2.50 The Crown Inn Hillfoot Road, Totley, Sheffield, S17 3AX Tel: 0114 236 0789 www.crowninnsheffield.co.uk
When it came to main courses we discovered that while the menu is old school, that does not mean it lacks innovation. We asked for a fillet steak to be served rare, and were told it would come on a hot stone, blue and moving towards rare, so each diner could judge precisely when it was cooked to their liking. Landlord Jack Halsall spotted these devices at a catering fair last year and decided to give them a go. If it sounds like a gimmick, hold that cynical thought. Slicing off strips of perfectly tender steak, seared on the outside and perfectly seasoned, this was comfort food with a smart twist. And if you prefer your steak well done, fear not – those sizzling stones stay extremely hot for a long time. (Please don’t test this fact with your finger – leave that to dumb food writers). Served with juicy king prawns and good chips, this was a fantastic main course. Meanwhile the fish platter, a selection of cod goujons, fishcake, scampi and a mini prawn cocktail, all beautifully cooked in light, crispy batter, was another top quality plate of food. After such a feast puddings were an indulgence but ginger cheesecake and a chocolate waffle rounded things off very nicely. As we left the bar was still busy, a second wave or diners was moving in and a singer was warming up for the regular Saturday night music spot. We should all be so lucky to have a local pub like this.

Vito with Claudio and Paolo
Pleased to see you! Adam Kay enjoys the warmest of welcomes at a Walkley institution.
I
t would seem perverse to lavish praise on a restaurant and in the same breath say the food wasn't the best bit. If a friend started telling you about the great eatery they went to last night, your first question would be “What did you eat?” And if they replied “No, no – everything else was what was great”, you'd consider them a lunatic. It's a restaurant – the food is all that matters, right? Well, break out the straitjacket, because I'm going to tell you about the great eatery I went to last night, and why the food wasn't the best bit. I went to Vito's, and had one of the best dining-out experiences of my life, and it had diddly-squat to do with what I ate. Don’t get me wrong – the food was a delight. Truly delicious, authentic Italian cuisine of the highest order. My wild boar was hearty and robust, packed with flavours of the Old Country and accompanied by al dente egg pappardelle. Before that I'd had scallops, delicately seasoned and fresh as they come. Across the table, my carnivore pal enjoyed polpette e salsiccia – meatballs and sausage, succulent and flavoursome – and a tasty fillet steak cooked to perfection. But as good, as memorable, as that grub was, it wasn’t what we went out into the night talking about afterwards. We talked about our waiter Paolo (more about him in a minute). We talked about how the rustic décor of this place, on a
WESTSIDE 92
street corner in Walkley, makes it feel like a family home in some corner of Italy. And we talked about how the whole room erupted into a chorus of “Buon compleanno a te” (that's “Happy birthday to you” to you) when the bar staff brought out a flaming shot of grappa for the birthday girl on table five. Vito Ciaraolo has been plying his trade on South Road for over 20 years now, and in that time his eponymous restaurant has become a haven of Italian hospitality. Helped by a wine list that caters to all tastes and pockets, there's a warm atmosphere here that makes it feel completely normal for a bunch of strangers to burst into song together on a Thursday evening, like on our visit. And while Vito's name may be over the door, he doesn't take a back seat – he's in the kitchen, slaving over the restaurant's varied menu of dishes from across Italy. With Vito at the stove, front-of-house duties are in the hands of the waitering team – and what a team it is. On our visit, Claudio was friendly, professional and efficient, but his colleague Paolo stole the show. Animated and larger-than-life without being overbearing, over the course of our meal he talked us through, variously: the specific cooking techniques of each dish we chose; the different grape varieties of Italian wine; and how his hyperactive young children are running rings around him at home. If they're as full of beans as their jolly old man, no wonder. Stuffed and satisfied at the end of the night, we asked Paolo to order us a taxi, and when it arrived he walked us outside, opened the car door and saw us off into the evening with a smile and a wave. And that about sums it up: at Vito's, you come for the food, but stay for everything else.

On your radar Is the drive out into Derbyshire worth it? Stephanie Burns thinks so as The Maynard pulls out all the stops.
U
nless you’re fortunate enough to call the lovely Derbyshire village of Grindleford home, The Maynard will most likely be on your ‘destination restaurant’ radar. Whether it’s this absence of passing trade, or simply the fact that the Fretwell-Downing family who own the hotel know how to entice guests from far and wide, one thing is abundantly clear – they pull out all the stops to make your visit worthwhile. From pre-dinner nibbles and baskets of warm, freshly baked bread to dazzling intermediate and pre-dessert courses – all offered with the chef’s compliments – they look after their customers incredibly well and, to put it rather crudely, give you a whole lot more bang for your buck. And it’s not like they’ve hiked the prices on the menu to mask the costs of these little treats; the most expensive starter is £6.50 and mains don’t break the £20 barrier. My medium glass of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc – a light and refreshing wine that matched my chicken starter and fish main beautifully – was just £4.75. Exceptionally good prices, especially for a two AA rosette hotel restaurant. Our visit began with drinks and olives in the lounge – a striking room with dark grey walls, huge leather Chesterfield sofas and feature windows – where we relaxed with a
WESTSIDE 96
Disaronno sour and that chilled glass of Sauvignon while perusing the menu. Options are impressively well balanced, with a good variety of vegetarian, fish and meat dishes. I opted for a chicken and leek terrine, served on a slate and accompanied by a zingy orange and dill chutney and hearty Guinness and spelt toast. My partner’s beef brisket croquet was given a sweet and spicy twist with soused plums and horseradish. Both offered good signs of things to come. After a tasty intermediate of salsa and home-smoked cheese, we tucked in to mains. My turbot fillet came with a delicate prawn mousse and herb crust, all balanced on a gently flavoured saffron risotto. Across the table, my companion enjoyed a pan roast duck breast with caramelised apples, Parisienne potatoes, cinnamon spiced red cabbage and a wonderful jus. Before the final flourish, our palates were cleansed with a great pre-dessert of strawberry and white chocolate espuma with strawberry caviar – tiny balls of strawberry gel that added a little extra texture to the light-as-air mousse. Our evening ended with beautifully presented desserts of coconut panna cotta and a dark chocolate and salted caramel sphere. Once again, The Maynard had proved that great food, excellent service and sumptuous surroundings are worth the drive into Derbyshire.

A
ny restaurant named in loving memory of the owner’s pet cats from 40-odd years ago is going to be a little bit quirky and, sure enough, Rhubarb & Mustard has an intriguing combination of styles, offering something a little different to pique the interest of the jaded diner. The look is contemporary, with plenty of bare wood on display and those industrial-style lightbulbs that are certainly having their moment in the dining world. Pale blue walls add to the sense of space, and, as darkness creeps in, candle lanterns on the tables softens everything nicely. Lovely white linen napkins and Sheffield silver cutlery bring a touch of fine dining to the proceedings too, as do some gorgeous complimentary canapes. I didn’t spot any mustard on the menu, but rhubarb is there in abundance, in cocktails, main courses and puddings, and even planted in a tin bucket on the front doorstep. It’s a classic modern bistrostyle menu and various deals, including three courses for £18 on selected a la carte dishes before 7pm and b-y-o wine on Sunday nights, mean you can be as canny or carefree with the budget as you wish. We started with a couple of classy cocktails, those canapes - delicious morsels of duck sausage, squid ink and anchovy and pea and mint puree – and a selection of breads, just to heighten anticipation for the main event. My starter of pan-seared scallops with confit chorizo was beautifully cooked but it was the tiny cubes of intensely flavoured grapefruit gel that lifted this familiar combination of ingredients
into the special category. Barbara’s octopus ballotine was subtly flavoured with a nice delicate texture, and it was as pretty a plate of food as you could wish to see. For mains, roast cod loin was pure white and sparkling fresh, with a moreish mussel broth and a tempura-style crispy floret of tender stem broccoli. Hand-cut chips, crispy and a deeply comforting golden brown, were the perfect side dish. In an interesting touch of theatre, Barbara was shown a smart presentation case that revealed a selection of wooden or silver handled knives from which she could choose the appropriate weapon to tackle her pan-fried rump of lamb. The dangerously slender dagger she selected certainly glided through this perfectly pink meat with ease; a decadently rich slice of dauphinoise, rhubarb puree and glazed carrots completed a very satisfying picture. The wine list was terrific and well-signposted with many options in the “great quality and value” section at £20 and under, and the “really good stuff” at £30 and under, with a wide selection available by the glass including Lofthouse, a sherberty Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, which matched my main course a treat. For desserts, I followed the waiter’s recommendation and made sure I got my own double rhubarb hit – stewed and in the icecream, along with a light-as-air vanilla sponge and crème anglais. Barbara’s honey tart was sweet, dark, surprisingly delicate and cased by first-rate buttery pastry. It was accompanied by parsnip ice-cream, macerated dates and walnut praline, and all the elements belonged together on another very well thought-through plate of food. This particular Ecclesall Road establishment has been through a few name changes in recent years while remaining under the same ownership, from Spice Market Café to Relish to Smith & Baker to this. They all had their plus points but Rhubarb & Mustard has the sweetness and spice to really make its mark.

WESTSIDE 100
W
ith just a matter of weeks until this year’s muchanticipated Westside Restaurant Awards, competition is hotting up in the region’s eateries. Our judges are out and about, busily debating the merits of restaurants across Sheffield and North Derbyshire in various categories – including the coveted Westside Restaurant of the Year. But there is one extra special category where our reviewers take a backseat – The Westside Readers’ Choice Award. We know you have strong opinions when it comes to dining out; now we want to know what your favourite restaurant is. The Westside Readers’ Choice award cuts across all boundaries. Whether your favourite restaurant is a fine dining venue, a classy café or something in between, all votes are equal. Last year, readers voted the Tickled Trout – Barlow’s fabulous dining pub that combines Derbyshire pride with Italian inspiration – as their top choice. Owner Chris Mapp was thrilled to win the approval of Westside readers and to receive confirmation that he was striking a chord with the people who matter most – the paying public.
Our readers are a discerning bunch and the announcement of this particular prize is always a highlight of our evening. Cast your vote now by visiting our website – www.regionalmagazine.co.uk – and following the link. All entries will go into a prize draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant on us. All votes must include a home address and contact details; multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified. The closing date is Friday 20 May so be quick, and don’t miss your opportunity to cast your vote. For the owners and hard-working staff of all the nominated restaurants, our awards dinner is an opportunity to celebrate the excellent range of dining-out venues on our doorstep. These are the longest running and most prestigious dining awards in Sheffield and North Derbyshire. The winners will be announced at our glitzy awards ceremony at Baldwin’s Omega on Monday 6 June, which promises to be a great evening. So make sure you have your say on the final outcome and cast your vote now. There will be a full preview in next month’s Westside.

Nissan turns up the drama on the GT-R The current-gen Nissan GT-R has been with us now since 2007, and every year since the Japanese company has tickled its underbelly and internal workings – an extra dollop of power here, a suspension tweak there. You get the idea. Now Nissan has really gone to town with the MY17 edition and the changes are the most dramatic yet. In essence, the car’s looks have been changed giving it a more aggressive stance on the road with better aerodynamic properties. There’s a more luxurious new interior with fewer buttons and better sound deadening. The suspension has been changed to give better handling and improve ride quality. Power has also been raised to 562hp. The order books opened this month with first deliveries this autumn.
Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest from the world of motoring. Feel the noise The latest generation of the Audi R8 is a welcome relief. Instead of following the rest of the industry by downsizing and turbo-charging their engines, the R8 has stuck to its guns and kept to a naturallyaspirated formula. Not only are these engines more responsive compared to their turbo-charged counterparts, but they’re considerably louder too. As you would expect, the R8 Coupe is a fantastically aurally stimulating machine but this can only get better because now the Spyder version is coming along. Available to order from later in the spring with deliveries at the end of the year, the new R8 Spyder will come with a 532hp 5.2-litre V10 powerhouse mated to an S-Tronic dualclutch gearbox. As with the Coupe, there’s no manual available.
Diesel joins the Club With the launch of the latest Mini Clubman back in October of last year, it was only a matter of time before the most fuel-efficient diesel variant was placed under the bonnet. It’s called the One D Clubman and it’ll be powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel producing 116hp, which can get the Clubman from 0-62mph in 10.4 seconds. Not bad for a car which in manual trim emits less than 100g/km of CO2 and manages 74.3mpg on the combined cycle. Automatic is slightly less frugal. High standard equipment levels which includes the likes of Mini Navigation, DAB, Bluetooth, Cruise control, MINI Connected and MINI Excitement Pack, 16inch alloy wheels, sports leather steering wheel and automatic lights and wipers. Available now. Priced from £21,375.
Reach for the sky Want your German super-coupe to be a little more… draughty? Well we have good news for you; the C63 is going topless. It’s the C63 AMG Cabriolet and it’s an electricallyoperated multi-layered fabric job which can be lowered or raised at speeds of up to 31mph. As it’ll be based on the C63 AMG coupe, it’ll come with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 motor producing either 469hp or 503hp in C63 S guise, and it’ll come with all the same equipment options. It literally is a C63 with the roof chopped off. It’ll weigh more than the regular car, and certainly cost more too. But will you really care when there’s millions of miles of blue sky at your disposal. The C63 Cabriolet will be launched in August..

WS Golf
Words: John Murphy
LOOK EAST!
John Murphy heads across the M18 to find great golf at the Forest Pines Hotel and Golf Resort.
S
heffield golfers are often tempted to head north to Leeds courses or west, over the Pennines, to some of Cheshire’s finest tracks such as Mere or Mottram. However they could do worse than cut down on journey time and avoid busy roads by going east. Under an hour away along the M18 and across the M180 lies the impressive Forest Pines Hotel and Golf Resort. The course features three loops of nine holes, Forest, Pines and Beeches, which snake their way through majestic pines and open heathland. The high canopies and the repetitive sound of ball on bark are reminiscent of some of the great courses around the South West of France, such as Hossegor and Seignosse. The resort is in North Lincolnshire, just outside Scunthorpe, which always sounds a long way from Sheffield but in reality is just over 40 miles away and very accessible. Come off Junction 4 of the M180 and the clubhouse is a hefty two iron down the road. The course has been substantially developed since its opening in 1996, especially after it became part of the QHotels collection in 2005, and has an enviable reputation as a venue for golfers of all standards. The combination of Forest and Pines is the longest, standing at 6,842 yards with the signature hole being the seventh on the Pines, a 200 yard par three involving an intimidating drive over water. The previous par five hole also involves water and is a real tester as stoke 18. A decent drive takes you in front of a large pond which you have
WESTSIDE 124
to negotiate to get in position for a third shot to the green. One of the most interesting holes on the Forest course is the par four fourth, which is a tight dog-leg to the left. Hit the ball too far and you run out of room, not far enough and you’re not round the corner for your approach shot. This hole is one of the very few where, as a first time visitor to the course, you are unable to get a clear sense of where to hit. The remainder of the holes are clearly defined and visually very attractive. This is a great strength of the three loops as is the maturity of the course. It gives the impression that it is far older and more established than 20 years and explains why it was deemed good enough to stage the 2013 Boys Home Internationals. Forest Pines operates annual memberships, day green fees, corporate days and most significantly is one of the premier courses available through the incredibly flexible and innovative QFairway membership scheme, operated by QHotels.
For as little as £295 you can buy a membership which entitles you to play at selected QFairway clubs while a £375 membership allows you to play at all 15 courses including 10 resort-based ones such as Slaley Hall in Northumberland and Oulton Hall in Leeds. When you join you receive points according to your membership level and these can then be spent when you book your golf at any of the courses throughout the country. Different tee times and different courses cost differing points so a golfer can plan away days and breaks to suit. It’s a unique system which caters for the regular golfer plus the returning or occasional golfer who does not want the expense, commitment and lack of variety of being tied to one club. QFairway membership also provides the benefits of being able to enter club competitions, holding a handicap and enjoying substantial discounts on Q venues’ food, drink, clothing, lessons, resort accommodation, spa and leisure visits. Additional promotions, exclusive to QFairway members, are also offered through the year. Such deals are great value if Forest Pines sets the standard. It houses an impressive leisure and spa complex plus two restaurants, excellent accommodation and the atmospheric Pines Bar with fine views over the sprawling course. To find out more about Forest Pines and Q Hotels’ range of golf packages, visit www.QHotels.co.uk/golf or call 01434 676587.

Girlguiding members surprise shoppers with a ‘flash mob’ celebration to mark 100 year milestone
Robert Hastie (photo by Richard Davenport)
Sheffield Theatres appoints Robert Hastie as artistic director
Sheffield Theatres has appointed Robert Hastie as the company’s new artistic director. Hastie will take up the position in July 2016, taking over from current artistic director Daniel Evans who will be joining Chichester Festival Theatre. This appointment sees Hastie return to Sheffield Theatres, where he began his professional theatre career as an actor in Edward Bond’s Lear in 2005. Robert said: “As a Yorkshireman, I am hugely looking forward to contributing to the cultural life of this great city. The Crucible, the Lyceum and the Studio together constitute one of the finest theatre complexes in Britain. Their reputation has been strengthened under the inspired leadership of Daniel Evans and Dan Bates, as a destination for audiences from both near and far who come in search of brilliant theatre and have their hopes more than fulfilled.”
Young women from Sheffield, Hull, Grimsby and Rotherham joined together in Sheffield for a spectacular celebration to mark 100 years of Girlguiding’s Senior Section. Around 30 girls took shoppers by surprise as they launched into an energetic flash mob dance routine at Meadowhall Shopping Centre. Their impressive routine featured choreography from popular dances from across the 20th century – covering each decade that Girlguiding has been empowering girls. Girlguiding’s Senior Section is open to all girls aged 14 to 25, offering a host of opportunities to older girls in guiding – from international travel and outdoor adventure sports to peer mentoring, advocacy and leadership skills. Over the years, Senior Section members have witnessed the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, swum the Channel, attended the UN Convention on the Status of Women and represented Great Britain at the Olympics. Centre director Darren Pearce said: “Meadowhall was delighted to be the venue for the Girlguiding’s flash mob event and it gave our shoppers a real surprise on the malls. The girls did a superb job performing in front of such a large crowd; I don’t think there would be many people out there who could do it so well and so confidently!”
Graysons appoints new partners
Easter card competition Students from Sheffield High School impressed residents of Loxley Park’s assisted living complex when they entered a competition to design their own Easter card. Three firm favourites were chosen by the residents and the winners were invited to collect their prizes from the care facility on Loxley Road. While there, the girls enjoyed chatting to the residents, many of who had attended the school when they were young.

Time for tea
Sheffield Girls High School piano teacher and mum of two Dorothy Davis is raising funds for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity this summer by taking part in the Time for Tea campaign. Dorothy, who was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2014, said: “Absolutely nothing can prepare you for the news you have cancer. But I knew that if I was to beat this, I needed to approach it with positivity and determination. The news that it had been caught early and that treatment options were available at Weston Park Hospital gave me the hope that I so desperately needed.” Time for Tea has raised £60,000 since 2014 and encourages people to host or attend a tea party to raise vital funds for the cancer charity. Whether it’s a tea party at home, in the community, or at work, supporters across the region are invited to pop the kettle on and bake some buns throughout May. Dorothy continued: “The staff at Weston Park Hospital and the surgical team at the Northern General helped me stay so upbeat and positive throughout treatment that we all want to show our appreciation – and what better way to do that than coming together with friends and family for a cup of tea!” Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity needs to raise over £1.9million this year to enable the funding of committed and new projects that will keep patients at the forefront of cancer treatment. To sign up for Time for Tea visit www.timeforteaparty.com or call the charity office on 0114 226 5370.
Young cyclist Henry uses pedal power to support Roundabout Seven-year-old Henry Barlow from Totley is planning to ride 18.2 miles of the Monsal Trail in Derbyshire in support of Sheffield young people’s homeless charity, Roundabout. Roundabout supports 150 young people in the city every day and runs the only emergency hostel in Sheffield for young homeless people aged 16 to 21. “For a while now I have been wanting to do something to raise money to help homeless people in Sheffield,” said Henry, who plans to complete his special journey on Sunday 5 June. “I feel upset when I hear about young people who have no home and who have to sleep on the streets at night. They must be cold, wet and must find it very difficult. I am very lucky to have a warm, safe house to live in but I worry that there are lots of young children and teenagers who aren’t as lucky as me.” At this issue went to press, Henry had raised £364 – smashing his initial target of £200.To add your support, visit www.justgiving.com/HenB.
