NOW ST STOCKISTS OCKISTS OF at our Barnsle Barnsleyy showroom showroom
Carpets & Vinyl
More and more Pension schemes are offering very large transfer values for deferred members to transfer out of their Pension scheme. However, before you take any action, you need to ask yourself whether you know if their offer is fair value or not. Should you be offered a transfer value, which can easily be more than the value of your house, it is imperative that you take independent financial advice from a recognised Pension Transfer Specialist. Not all advisors are qualified and licenced to advise on these matters. Hamnett Wealth Management are. We are your local, established Independent Financial Advisors. We are highly qualified and up to date with the latest legislation and are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Our Pension Review Service allows you to consider the valuable benefits that would be lost on a transfer out. Once you’ve transferred out there is no going back. This could be the biggest financial decision you will ever make in your life. It is imperative you make the right choice. No two people are the same and you shouldn’t be blinded by big figures and the thought of free money. You’ve worked hard to build up these benefits so you should be careful not to blow it. Hamnett Wealth Management’s Pension Review Service takes into account your personal financial situation, your health, family situation and critically your attitude to risk and capacity for loss. By focusing on your needs for income, capital and flexibility in retirement, we can make a formal recommendation on what you should do. We offer a free impartial face-to-face meeting where we will assess your current situation. You are welcome to call into our office on Baslow Road, Totley or we can visit you in the comfort of your own home. Financial planning can be complicated but at Hamnett Wealth Management, we speak in plain English and explain everything comprehensively. Planning for the future GILLIAN COVERLEY, PARTNER AND YORKSHIRE HEAD OF TAX TRUST AND ESTATES AT IRWIN MITCHELL PRIVATE WEALTH, OUTLINES THE CHANGES FOR 2017. ack in 2007, the Conservatives promised a £1million Inheritance Tax allowance and in April 2017 this began to come into effect. The £1million allowance will only apply to married couples and civil partners; those who are single or divorced will be limited to £500,000. Being gradually phased in, it will be 2020 before the new tax giveaway reaches the £1million mark and it is hedged about with some complex conditions. This will mean a rethink on forward financial planning for anyone concerned to minimise the impact of this most dreaded of taxes. Inheritance Tax was previously 40 per cent on estates over the basic tax-free allowance of £325,000. Married couples and civil partners could pass any unused allowance to each other after a death. For the 2017/2018 tax year the limit rose to £425,000, with the intention of climbing in increments of £25,000 to reach £500,000 by the 2020/2021 tax year. A couple with a £1million family home will then be able to pass it on free of tax, but those with other valuable assets may not qualify. In calculating whether the new allowance, known as the ‘Residence Nil Rate Band’ (RNRB), can be added to the existing and automatic ‘Nil Rate Band’ (NRB), the whole estate is valued. If it is over £2million, the RNRB is reduced by £1 for every £2 excess, so that estates worth more than £2.35million get no RNRB. For anyone needing to sell their property to ‘downsize’, but who might be deterred by potentially losing the new enhanced tax relief, special rules can preserve RNRB but are highly complex. The new tax regime brings new

opportunities. An estate must include a home that the deceased has lived in, but this does not have to be the main family home and if there is more than one property in the estate, a family can nominate one for the relief. That home must be ‘closely inherited’ – left to a direct or lineal descendant – which includes family members and their spouses, stepchildren, adopted or foster children and grandchildren. Any RNRB that is not used on a first death in a couple can be transferred to a surviving spouse or civil partner. Furthermore, assets and property left in trust will qualify if the only beneficiaries are direct descendants who will have at least a life interest. However, there are pitfalls. Transferring an unused RNRB between spouses will not help if the survivor’s estate becomes too valuable to qualify. Unmarried couples might assume that each other’s children would meet the requirements, but they will not be considered stepchildren of each other and there will be no RNRB. Nor do gifts between an unmarried couple themselves get the new relief. The £2million cut-off is valued for RNRB purposes before deducting any business or agricultural property reliefs. Gillian Coverley, Partner in the Tax Trust and Estates team at Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth, says that there are two significant elements to the new regime: one on the drafting of wills, particularly in relation to trusts, and the other in estate planning as well as the use of assets. “For a husband and wife, there are the options of leaving outright or leaving in trust; it’s about how the trust is worded when the second person dies. We want to encourage
people to take stock of whether their will meets today’s requirements. It is a big change and one has to jump through hoops to meet it.” Estate planning has also come back into focus with the £2million limit on full entitlement for the RNRB. “A lot of spouses will leave everything to each other, but on the second estate it all bunches up and could be over £2million.” Gillian predicts a return to the NRB discretionary trusts which were popular as a way of not adding to the value of the survivor’s estate until tax changes in 2007 were introduced. The value of an estate can be reduced through either gifting or spending, but Gillian warns that a giver must have full mental capacity: those with power of attorney cannot make gifts without an expensive court application. Gillian also comments: “The changes in taxation of pensions and on death benefits payable from pensions may mean it is worth spending down other capital and leaving pensions intact. Attractive as pension flexiaccess drawdown can be, it may be better to spend capital which you know would be taxed at 40 per cent on death and which might also take you over the £2million cutoff point for RNRB. “Get advice on your will. Your lawyer should understand estate planning and the relevant tax issues, and should be working with other professional advisors to give reassurance and to create a coherent strategy.” For further information, contact Gillian Coverley at Irwin Mitchell on 0114 294 7804 or 0370 1500 100 (Ext. 7804), or by email Gillian.Coverley@IrwinMitchell.com.

Another happy customer‌ When Simon and Rachel considered restoring their porch, they turned to the team at Window Spec and were over the moon with the results. “We had a canopy above the front door, which after water damage had to be taken down. After 18 months of nothing over the door we were ready to go for a conservatory style porch. “After speaking with Andy from Window Spec, he told us we had another option – extend the front of the house with a 3m brick extension, creating more of an entrance that would look like part of the structure of the house.

EDUCATION
The best days of our lives? A-LEVEL STUDENT FU GE YANG, WHO SPENT PART OF HER SUMMER DOING WORK EXPERIENCE IN THE EDITORIAL DEPARTMENT AT RMC MEDIA, IS IN A REFLECTIVE MOOD AS SHE FACES UP TO A CHALLENGING FINAL YEAR AT SCHOOL. fter a year as a sixth former perhaps I should be taking the UCAS forms, personal statements and university open days in my stride. Nonetheless, the anxiety is unstoppable – I have one more year, one crucial year before my future is set before my eyes. We are only 17, yet it is up to us to map out a whole future, dig deep within ourselves and see if there is anything about us that we can use to our advantage. It felt as if I was boasting when I moulded a figure on a thin sheet of paper called a personal statement. Others may perceive it as a perfection, yet it was created by leaving out the bad bits. Sixth form, to say the least, had been a giant step up. We are not faced just with intense school works the teachers set every day, but the extra bits and bobs. Have you done more on your Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)? Have you researched into which university provides the best course for you? What are you doing to gain more UCAS points? Each individual task eats away slowly into my free time, taking up the few free periods I have left and eroding time which I could have spent with my friends. Some say “oh, it is not that bad if you are organised and prepared”. But it is easier said than done. If you let one thing

slip by, the entire timetable could go awry. Sometimes, especially when the teachers remind you of application form deadlines, you become aware of what is at stake; you hold all responsibilities for your future. This is indeed a challenging topic, especially if you lack ideas for the future, as I do. I have rather high expectations of myself and sometimes, I feel if I take one wrong step, my entire future will crash around me. This may sound like hyperbole, but I believe this feeling of anxiety is caused by the existence of stress which, without you realising, could be overpowering. It is the reason you have a tantrum when you know your parents’ advice is not an accusation; it is the reason you have the sudden need to weep when you know your daily work is not finished. Stress has
Fu Ge Yang doing work experience at RMC Media
slowly entered my life over the last year and become a normality. However, I am no exception. Stress is most apparent across our generation of sixth formers owing to the educational reforms we have to face. The removal of AS Level and coursework in some of the subjects means the last year of schooling will be more vital and challenging than ever before. Besides the learnings of Y13 and the preparations for our selected universities, we will have to learn and relearn, cramming in knowledge that had been collecting dust for over a year. Although I seem to be weaving a fabric of woes and foes over my life as a sixth former, there is some sunshine. If you look on the bright side, ever since I cast away the uniform I wore for five years and exchanged it for casual, freestyle clothes of my own choice, I definitely feel I have gained more freedom. It is also a nice feeling to sit in the library looking smug during a free period whilst the younger years are still in lessons. As I anticipate what Y13 may bring, a sense of excitement is taking over the fear and the doubts. I am opening a new chapter in my life and I have full control of it! Although there will be bumps and halts as I prepare for entering a university, I will fight on with enthusiasm.
See for yourself what makes Queen Ethelburga’s so special Just a week after achieving great results nationally at A level and BTEC, students and staff at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate celebrated excellent results at GCSE, across both of it’s senior schools. 80% of the results for Year 11 pupils were graded A* or A in QE College, or the new 7 to 9 grades. In the Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, which offers more creative and vocational options in addition to the traditional GCSE subjects, 93% of the grades were A*- C or equivalent. The Principal of Queen Ethelburga’s, Steven Jandrell, said it had been another excellent set of examination results and this was a tribute to the meticulous preparation that staff and pupils had put into the new, more rigorous GCSE courses: “At a time when there is national concern about the increased demands and how this will be reflected in the results, I am delighted to see such success across both our senior schools. Our 20% pass rate in the College at the new, exclusive grade 9 in English and Mathematics, compared with an estimated national average of 2% is indicative of the quality of our pupils’ performance and I could not be more pleased.” “Our personalised approach to working with each student is really working to our pupils’ benefit and, as our sixth form results showed last week, our GCSE performance is providing a platform from which great results are achieved across a very wide variety of subjects.” Within the College, at GCSE, Catheryne Kelly of Doncaster gained the equivalent of over 10 A grade GCSEs including the new numerical grades. Particular successes in the Faculty at GCSE included Laura Goff from Garforth who achieved 5A* and 2 A grades, as well as gaining an 8 and 7 in her English GCSEs and a C grade at AS level Mathematics, whilst Douglas Sword of Great Ouseburn, near York, gained 2A* and 3 A grades in addition to a 9 in Mathematics and an 8 and 7 in English. In last week’s results, Year 13 students in QE’s College, which follows a more traditional, academic curriculum, returned 85% of A level grades at A* or A, whilst Faculty students achieved 77% A* and A grades at A level and 91% Distinction* and Distinction grades (Equivalent in UCAS points to A* and A at A level). These results will continue a tradition over recent years for both schools to be near the top of national league tables for results.

Mount St Mary’s College in 2017 is a vibrant and growing school. Although much has changed in its remarkable history, the Mount preserves and cherishes its Jesuit identity. Care of the individual and the pursuit of excellence are at the heart of everyday life. Whilst the majority of the students at the school are from the local area, travelling daily from Sheffield, Chesterfield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Mansfield and beyond, many using the fleet of school minibuses, around 20 per cent of students come from countries around the world. Students come to live alongside the British students from many European countries as well as many from further afield including Mexico, Chile, Fiji, the Middle East, Hong Kong, China and Nigeria to name a few. This creates a diverse, cosmopolitan environment, reflective of the wider world, where students learn to live and work alongside one another, preparing for all that comes next. EATING OUT
Don’t hold back PHOEBE SEYMOUR DISCOVERS THAT, WHATEVER YOUR DIETARY REQUIREMENTS, THE GREEDY GREEK DELI CATERS FOR ALL – JUST BEWARE THE HUGE PORTIONS! ’d recently decided to go vegetarian and felt quite optimistic that I could resist meat. However, I panicked when I realised I was going to The Greedy Greek Deli. Images of juicy kebabs and sizzling souvlaki immediately came to mind. So imagine my relief when I sat down with the menu and found reams of delicioussounding starters, sides and mains with little green dots next to them. The Greedy Greek has been one of the culinary highlights of Sharrow Vale Road for the past 14 years. And every time I return, I’m convinced the portions and flavours are bigger and better. The décor however, has not changed and nor would we want it to. Apricot and blue walls echo the sea and sand of Mediterranean holidays, while aerial photos of Greek islands, ancient Grecian statues and traditional Greek music transport you. There may be simple tables covered in no-frills, paper tablecloths, but this doesn’t matter – the fabulous food is the star of the show. My partner started with the Greek chorizo sausage (£2.45) and a side of marinated Kalamata olives (£3.90) and I must admit, the smoky scent of the meat was heavenly.
I
66 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
However, my food envy faded as I tucked in to a flaky spanakotyropita (£5.10), filled to the brim with feta and spinach. Saving some of his olives for the main event, my partner had the lemon chicken (£10.30), which was served as large chunks of chicken and cooked onions on two skewers, alongside pieces of pitta, a creamy lemon yoghurt and a huge Greek salad filled with rocket, red peppers, onion, tomatoes, feta and green olives. I also had my hands full with the mixed halloumi and falafel wrap (£7.25), with its boulder-like falafel pieces and big cubes of lightly fried halloumi. Combined with crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes and cucumber, olive hummus and moreish tzatziki in a thick pitta, this had to be one of the best wraps I’d ever had. We also had a side of zingy Greek lemon potatoes (£4.40) on our waiter’s recommendation, which did not fail to impress. Baclava (£4.40) is a must at any Greek restaurant, so I did not hesitate in ordering some for dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Coming as four small parcels of filo pastry, full of warm chopped nuts and drenched in honey, there would have been
plenty to share, but my partner had his heart set on the Greek lemon cake (£4.40). As his spoon cut through the cake, made up of layers of soft pastry, the lemon sauce ran out. A sweet end to a satisfying meal. Eating out and ordering in can be difficult when you have dietary requirements, but places like The Greedy Greek Deli remind me that you don’t need to restrain your appetite. What’s more, many of their dishes can be made dairy free upon request. You can even bring your own bottle of wine to enjoy. Be inspired esigner Kitchen Direct (DKD) are located on Junction Road, Sheffield, just above Hunters Bar roundabout. Dawn Rayner, Managing Director, has 25 years’ experience in the business and has teamed up with her daughter-in-law, Mary Major, and step-daughter, Leah Fleetham. “It’s a real family business,” says Dawn. “Even the grandchildren like to get involved when they call in.” Two of the designers have degrees in interior architecture, including Mary, who, for the past 14 years has been designing kitchens suited perfectly to the people who will use them. “First of all, I need to know how people live and use their kitchen; what are their main priorities and how they use their space in the home,” says Mary. “With this greater level of understanding I am able to design by function, rather than just by aesthetics. I believe I should never have to try to sell a kitchen. If I do my job right, then I find that the customer just wants to buy it. “Our prices beat everyone else for this level of quality and finish. Basically, we are offering designer, British-built rigid kitchens at mass distributor prices.

It was the best design we had seen, by far. “Our kitchen is truly unique, superb quality throughout, and the price was very fair and reasonable and came well within our budget. We will never go anywhere else for our kitchens and bedrooms in the future. “A huge thanks to all at DKD.”

EATING OUT
Indulge yourself HANNAH SANDERS CAN’T RESIST THIS ‘DINING GEM ON THE SHARROWVALE FOODIE MILE’.
W
ith its bright red exterior, Made by Jonty is a beacon on Sharrowvale Road, attracting Sheffielders in their
droves. You certainly can’t miss the queues outside – such is the popularity, people are even willing to brave the chilly months for an opportunity to indulge in their coffees, cakes and a hearty all-day breakfast and brunch menu. Sheffield born and bred, Jonty Cork has worked in some of Sheffield’s finest dining establishments, taking the head chef role at both West 10 and Silversmiths before he opened his own café’s doors in 2010. The main seating area comprises of stripped back wooden tables, booths and a tempting glass cabinet full of freshly baked delights – be prepared, you may have to wait a few minutes to find a seat but with the smell of that morning’s coffee roasting in the air coupled with the warm welcome of the staff it is hard not to feel instantly at home. It’s the little touches that makes Jonty’s stand above the rest, from the personalised artwork on the wall, to using his father’s rally trophies as cutlery holders. 70 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
We started our brunch with an almond latte, finished with a beautiful milky swirl (£2.50) for myself and a rhubarb speciality tea (£1.80), for my friend. My dining companion went for the glutenfree option – vegan potato rosti (£8.50), served with wild mushrooms, tempeh, tender stem broccoli, toasted seeds and chili jam. The crisp crust of the rosti was heavenly when paired with the delicate mushrooms and sweet chilli jam, providing the dish with a perfect balance of flavours. I opted for the huevos rancheros (£7.50) a gutsy combination of fried eggs, refried beans, salsa and guacamole, all delicately layered on top of crunchy corn tortillas. The eggs were delightfully runny, complemented by the zingy salsa and earthy flavour of the refried beans. After a brief respite, we sampled some of the delicious home-made desserts. My companion went for the delightfully gooey brownie (£2.50) and a redbush tea (£1.80), whilst I chose the chocolate and vanilla cake, (£2.80) and raspberry and cranberry tea (£1.80). The cake was gluten-free – most of the
sponges at Jonty’s are – and was light in texture, layered with rich buttercream and finished with drizzled chocolate. Jonty was in at the start of the café cultural revolution in Sheffield and whilst many ventures have formed in his wake, if I had to choose just one, this would be it. My only warning is to those starting their preChristmas diets… you are entering the land of temptation. Made by Jonty 363 Sharrowvale Road, Sheffield, S11 8ZG Tel: 0114 266 6447 www.madebyjonty.co.uk

THE MEDITERRANEAN The Mediterranean’s owner, Rachid Elafif, has been the owner of The Mediterranean for over two years and has a serious passion for food. His signature grilled lobster goes down a storm with his customers and his pastry skills are complemented beautifully by delicious homemade ice-cream. “My passion for food is what motivates me,” he says, “and what I enjoy most is being able to pass on my skills through meals for the customers to taste.” Though The Mediterranean specialises in seafood, it also serves meat dishes such as chicken breast, poussin, beef medallion and tapas.

WEDDINGS
Set your wedding free IT’S THE BIGGEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE, SO FLOUT CONVENTION AND CREATE A STUNNING WEDDING TO REMEMBER. ack in the day, your only wedding venue options were church or registry office and the reception tended to take place at your local pub or working men’s club. But in recent years brides and grooms have become much more imaginative. Every couple has different needs and tastes when it comes to planning their big day and this year’s trends are sure to suit everyone, whether you are looking for an outdoor, indoor, traditional or modern setting. If you are baffled about where to even begin planning your wedding, read on for some inspiration and to find out what types of venues are on trend for 2017.
B
The beach The beach trend is by no means a new concept, but with flights to European holiday destinations cheaper and easier to book than ever (thank the internet gods), sunny weddings by the coast are much more plausible than they used to be. And the best part? You are already on your honeymoon too. Find a hotel with a honeymoon suite and reception space with a beautiful white beach nearby, and you will have the perfect package. If you looking for a simple yet stunning setting, with near guaranteed sunshine, a beach wedding is most certainly for you. If you are piecing together your own beach wedding, The Knot has plenty of handy advice at www.theknot.com/beach-weddings
The outdoors
The barn
Getting married in the great outdoors can be an amazing experience, as long as you prepare for the variable British weather, of course. From woodlands to open fields, beautiful natural views can mean you don’t need much in the way of decorations. However, you may want an indoor area such as a marquee or building to have your reception in if the weather does change. Many people are also coupling this kind of setting with a boutique festival theme. UK law previously stated that you could not marry outside, in a tent, marquee or any other temporary structure. However, as of 2015, outdoor weddings are now allowed provided the venue obtain an additional licence. From garden to mountain weddings, find all the ideas and advice you will need for outdoor weddings at www.theknot.com/outdoor-weddings
Barns continue to be a popular option, which suit the equally popular rustic and shabby chic wedding looks – get those jam jars, worn wooden chairs and fairy lights at the ready. These are usually based on working farms, but there are also disused barns that have been bought and renovated by party organisers who put the venue up for hire. If this is the case, they are also very likely to do a lot of the setting up and wedding planning for you. Again this is a great venue that can be transformed from a hall for your ceremony, to a dancefloor and banqueting area. And as these venues tend to be away from residential areas, you can make a bit of noise and party til the early hours. Get hitched in a rustic barn or under a thatched gazebo surrounded by the north Yorkshire moors at Ox Pasture Hall. To find out more visit www.oxpasturehallhotel.com/weddings/ barn-wedding
The treehouse Combining two themes we have already touched upon, a treehouse offers the simple and rustic charm of the barn with the natural charm of the forest. A treehouse often being a childhood dream, those young at heart will jump at the chance to perform their nuptials here. Thought of as of being quite unconventional in the past, this option is becoming a lot more widely considered. What is more, a gorgeous forest will make a fantastic backdrop for photos – let’s just hope none of your wedding guests are afraid of heights. The Lodge in Scotland is a great place to start and it helps that our neighbouring country has looser laws when it comes to outdoor weddings. also take care of all the event co-ordination and confirm bookings. “We pride ourselves on innovative ideas, catering for individuality and creating bespoke weddings and events.” White Rose can cater for numerous events including corporate events, dinners, award ceremonies, birthdays and dances along with intimate dinners for up to 12 people. The most inclusive service is the full package, which incorporates everything from style and venue suggestions, along with a one hour complimentary consultation. They will also produce a timeline guide to demonstrate the planning process and keep customers up to date. When it comes to styling, White Rose pulls out all the stops. Their team has the creativity and imagination to bring your ideas to life. Whether it’s a tipi, woodland, shabby chic or a plush themed wedding or event, they have the skills to make it one of a kind. They also recently launched the aisle package, which offers customers the chance to have a bespoke backdrop, white aisle carpet along with lanterns. The business works with a variety of hotels and venues to provide customers with the ideal setting, such as The Crown Hotel, Mount Pleasant Hotel, Rossington Hall, Wentbridge House Hotel, Castle Park Rugby Club and the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Recently they decorated Yorkshire Wildlife Park for a wedding, draping the ceiling and the staircase and creating a bespoke live backdrop to the bride’s requirements, which gained fantastic reviews.
Five star testimonial from the bride “I was recommended White Rose Occasions by my wedding venue as a partner of choice. As I had a unique idea for my zoo wedding, I was worried about selecting someone to bring my dreams to life. However, I needn’t have worried at all! “From start to finish the entire team were fantastic – nothing was too much to ask for and they totally got my wedding vision. Even creating a bespoke tropical backdrop for my ceremony and sharing pictures with me to help me visualise the plans. “Having never seen the room at the zoo decorated as I visualised it before the morning of my wedding, and walking in to see the beautiful flowers on the stairs, the draping the staging etc… brought me to tears. This was at the Wildlife Park. The room at the Crown Hotel Bawtry looked as equally amazing as did the secret garden. I would HIGHLY recommend White Rose Occasions for any of your room decorating needs! Thanks to Jackie and her team for helping make my big day that bit special.” – Emily Armstrong

Decorating venues
White Rose Occasions dressed the venue for the 2017 Westside Restaurant Awards
White Rose Occasions frequently decorate a range of venues, and this year were on hand to dress the Westside Restaurant Awards venue, and will also be doing this for the upcoming Eastside Restaurant Awards. “White Rose Occasions were able to provide Westside with black and gold candelabras and a starlight backdrop, along with the complete chair covers and gold sashes and runners to complete the look,” said Jackie. “The entire team worked extremely hard to complete the venue leaving ample time before the event took place, and the Westside team were extremely helpful especially Jill – thank you for your help.” Other event successes have been children’s birthday themed parties, including Beauty and the Beast. “Having vast experience in the childcare industry, by owning a day nursery previously, lecturing at college and being a child care assessor/tutor and internal verifier, gave me good knowledge to understand what children like,” says Jackie.

AT THE RACES
The perfect match
Sponsored by Solutions 4 Cleaning and Westside’s sister publication First For Business magazine, 140 guests from the corporate sector enjoyed a sunny but blustery day’s racing at the opening day of this year’s St Leger Festival in Doncaster. For the 16th year, the race day marquee was hosted by David Heugh, and guests raised over £1,000 for Sheffield charity Support Dogs during the lunchtime raffle.
Local car firm Steel City Sport and Prestige Cars has agreed a deal to be the shirt sponsor for Sheffield United’s under 18s for two seasons. Owner Adam Short said: “We decided we wanted to help out locally and with us being big football fans ourselves it seemed like the perfect match.” For more information, head to www.steelcitysportsandprestige.co.uk
Golf ’s wonderboy Matt Fitzpatrick drives charity day to £50,000 victory The celebrity-studded, fourth annual ‘Walker Cup – Not that one’, staged by TV sports presenter Dan Walker, raised a staggering £50,000 for The Children’s Hospital Charity – and the star of the day was golf ’s latest wonderboy, Sheffield-born Matt Fitzpatrick. The funds raised will help fund a SPECT CT scanner, which will play a key role in the hospital’s delivery of nuclear medicine, enabling radiologists to scan children with suspected cancerous tumours, epilepsy, painful injuries or neuro-disabilities, using one highly advanced diagnostic device.

LET G&M HEALTH CARE WITH ALEVERE TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE AND YOUR BODY.
dread to think where I would be now if I had not started the Alevere programme when I did. I was deteriorating fast as a person.” James Jayawardena’s weight loss difficulties started in April 2016 when his GP diagnosed him with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and pre-diabetes. “Something had to give as my weight had really started to creep up over the last few years, and, at 22-and-a-half stone, I was starting to become increasingly aware that if I did not do anything about it I was exposing myself to potentially irreversible and serious health implications.” James was worried that his demanding lifestyle would mean it was impossible for him to lose weight, however, as soon as he started on the Alevere programme he was convinced that the team at G&M Healthcare could help him. “My initial concerns were about being hungry, as I ate quite large portions and would often graze during the day. I worked out that I was eating 600/700 calories between meals and I was really worried; I didn’t need to be. “I was apprehensive going into the programme, but once you’re in, the staff walk you through everything, and you feel at ease straight away.” Alevere quickly taught James that losing weight is about understanding food and the effects of various ingredients in food – ensuring you don’t deprive yourself but you take a regular, balanced approach. “I began Alevere with an open mind and the thing that I found most refreshing was that the programme was not about dieting but about making permanent adjustments to my lifestyle. “I started losing weight very quickly, it was like an overnight transformation. started to feel too big and people started to notice too, you don’t get any more motivational than that. “Losing weight does not mean giving up everything you enjoy eating. In fact, the pleasure of eating something ‘unhealthy’ is better when it becomes an occasional treat, rather than a regular and ignored part of your diet.” After three months on the programme James had lost almost seven stone, and was starting to feel much more confident again, and has since continued his weight-loss journey. “I was losing 3kg every week, so it was great to get on the scales and realise how much I had lost overall – and that made me want to carry on. I liked the routine of the programme and the big weekly weight loss was a great motivation, I became very focused. “With good planning and listening the

programme is adaptable, I wouldn’t say it was easy, it took willpower, but I didn’t feel hungry and my energy levels were noticeably higher to myself and others. “Alevere isn’t a diet, because it changes your philosophy completely. It teaches you to eat normal but healthy food, and retrains you on how you should eat. “The programme is now part of my daily life without me being obsessed with it and by what I can and can’t be eating. I have changed how I eat for good – I eat regularly and I still have what I want, but I don’t snack all the time.” James has discovered a whole new way of life, and, though he knows there is no magic wand to losing weight, he has seen that with help and support it is achievable. “Alevere has totally changed my life. People always comment that I am now a completely different person and approach things in a different way. “Grace, Sarah and all the staff, therapists and nutritionists are extremely knowledgeable and there’s always as line of communication and support available and you feel like part of a little community. “I firmly believe in Alevere and want others to see how it has worked for me. If I had one regret it would be that I did not start the programme sooner.”

I CHANGED MY WHOLE LIFE WITH THE HELP OF G&M HEALTHCARE, SAYS KERRY HARRIS WHO SHED AN AMAZING SEVEN STONE WITH THEIR HELP. “If you had told me at the beginning of the year that 2016 would be the year I lost weight, I wouldn't have believed you.” Kerry Harris had struggled with body and self-confidence issues for many years, often yo-yo dieting and attempting to lose weight but always going back to old habits. But when the strains of carrying the extra weight began to affect her family life, it became impossible to ignore. “Before I started Alevere, I hated my body. My weight was beginning to affect my confidence and was making me feel very unhappy in all aspects of my life. I stopped doing activities I loved, spending time with my children and avoided situations where I felt my weight would be judged.” Stepping on the scales left Kerry feeling low, but it also gave her the determination she needed to tackle her weight problem head on. “I hadn’t weighed myself for years. I imagined I would weigh about 13-14 stone, so when the scales told me I was 17st 6.5lbs I couldn’t believe it. “I had seen advertisements for G&M Healthcare with Alevere and decided I was going to give it a try. I was so sceptical to begin with, since I had always been trying to lose weight - I remembered how exhausting it was trying to find the perfect diet plan or weight loss ‘trick’.” Combining high quality, flavoursome foods and state of the art ultrasound technology, it was the maintenance stage of the Alevere programme that Kerry found most difficult. But, under strict medial supervision, she soon realised how important it was to enabling her to manage her weight long term. “The fast rate of weight loss kept me motivated and the therapy sessions gave me the support I needed to stay on track and help me understand more about my relationship with food.” So far, Kerry has lost over seven stone and uses her own weight loss as a tool to spur herself on. “As the weight came off, I could not believe how good I felt and how different I looked. I lost almost seven stone in 21 weeks and I feel amazing. “Seeing the weight come off gave me
Kerry before…
encouragement to keep going and I now feel that I know how to eat properly. The plan has taught me to think about what I am putting into my body.” Like everyone, Kerry has hit the occasional rut but she says she tries to combat it by switching up her workout routine. "My weight is no longer ruling my life. Before, I let the weight define me and my boundaries. Now, I don't. I make the rules. "I've learned to be patient about the rest of the weight loss," and she reminds others to do the same. "Instead of always being down on yourself for how much more you have to go, look back at all you've already done." Kerry is such a convert to the goals and outcomes of the programme that she has now joined G & M Healthcare as a weight loss therapist, helping to motivate others along their weight loss journeys. “All the staff at the clinic were very caring and professional and I wanted to give something back to the programme. It has really helped me and I’m so grateful. “It’s great to see others achieving their goals.”

Then the realisation comes that you can’t do any of those things, and that you are going to go home, but you won’t be able to go upstairs. “Initially, we turned the dining room into a bedroom, and, as part of our plans to make living a bit easier, we wanted to turn it into a wet room, with just a small bedroom extension – which, with little financial support from the NHS or the council, was just about all we could afford.” Lesley now requires fulltime care, most of which is provided by her husband John, and a nursing visit every
H
morning to help with bodily functions, as well as two carer visits each day. “Lesley has not had a shower at home for 11 months and is desperate to get an accessible wet room that enables her to be able to shower and wash her hair at home,” says John. “Currently, she has to visit Staveley Centre for a bath once a week, and she has no real privacy in her bedroom – we share the house with our daughter and her boyfriend and certain times of day he can’t walk through because Lesley is being taken care of.” When Roger Bird of GreenBird Properties heard the couple’s story, he knew he had to help, and, with the support of the local and wider community, he has pledged to transform the home in a DIY SOS-style makeover, at no cost. Around 70 contractors have offered products and services to help GreenBird with the build, and, with more than 200,000 people wanting to help, Roger has set up a JustGiving page. Although Roger has pledged to do the job at no cost to the couple, he doesn’t expect people to work for free, and believes £28,000 would help give Lesley and John an extension much more suited to the their needs, compared to the plans the budget originally allowed. “When I said I’d do it for free I meant no
cost to Lesley and John, and I’ll not take anything out of it myself, but I don’t expect other people to give up their wage, because they simply can’t afford it,” he says. “I can’t put a solid plan in place right now, because the funds will allow us to do so much, and we haven’t raised all the money yet. “If someone gave us a pot of money and told us to build what is best for Lesley and John, we’d cancel the original plans and get a new set of drawings. It’s a question of whether we can raise the money to do what I want to do, which is take the extension to the end of the house, make the building more accessible, and, most importantly, do the job properly.” National firms such as Build Base have already pledged to supply materials for the build, and a number of contractors have offered to provide services. To help raise funds, Roger is hoping to find support from larger corporations, and has contacted a national bank to ask for help. He’s also hoping the local community will pledge support. If you would like to back GreenBird Properties and help build a better home for Lesley and John, you can pledge your support at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/roger-bird or contact the firm on: 0114 289 1830.

EATING OUT
Curry with a side of quirk AFTER 50 YEARS, ASHOKA RETAINS ITS INDIVIDUAL FLAVOUR, SAYS CHRIS WILSON. he décor is based on a Raj-era Indian railway carriage, and a copy of the Karma Sutra is handed out alongside the hot towels and chocolate mints when it’s time to leave... just two examples of the way Ashoka, 50 years after it opened on Ecclesall Road, is retaining its quirky edge. This cornerstone of the Sheffield dining scene, founded by the late Kamal Ahmed in 1967, likes to do things a little differently, from the playfully labelled dishes (who fancies a Reyt Spiceh Curreh?) to the unexpectedly hot reading matter that may or may not spice up the rest of your evening. Many old-school diners, who remember Kamal patrolling the restaurant floor and interacting with customers, will mourn his recent passing. But thanks to ‘new’ owner Rahul Amin, who took over in 2004, the legacy of the man who brought the first tandoori oven to Sheffield is in safe hands. The makeover was a few years ago now but still looks bright, lively and refreshingly different. Your placemat is your menu (food one side, drinks the other) and while this may come as a shock if you’ve been used to leafing through heavy, laminated menus that never end, all the choice you could reasonably expect from one modestly-sized restaurant is here. All Indian meals begin with poppadoms

(85p each) and the pickle tray (85p per person) don’t they? You just can’t beat the traditions of that crunch-and-scoop, washed down on this occasion by freshly made and very nicely judged salted lassi (£3.50) and a chilled Cobra lager (£6, 600ml bottle) . For starters, black pepper prawn puri (£5.50) was rich and creamy with lots of prawns and cracked black pepper in the fluffiest Indian bread shell. Chilli paneer (£6) had cubes of paneer cheese in a sauce that was almost sweet-sour with lots of tomato, soy and garlic. Many dishes are labelled medium, hot or mild but Rahul advised us not to make too much of that when selecting. Choose the main course that appeals most and they’ll adjust the spicing to match your individual preference. So for me it was the Ashoka’s most popular dish year-on-year, karamelised Kashmiri lamb (£11.50) with slow-cooked onions. I asked for some extra heat and the dish was certainly gutsy enough to take it. The lamb was perfectly tender too. Our other main, Keralan coconut king prawn curry (£12) balanced the sweetness of the coconut, the fire of the curry and the rich spices in great style. Pilau rice (£3) and charcoal baked butter naan (£2.50) were just the thing to mop up those sauces, and a side order of ginger brinjal (£6), ordered just
because we wanted to try something different, was a delight - these baby vine aubergines were soft, smoky and slightly chewy with a late hit of ginger. Incidentally that Karma Sutra booklet, gloriously illustrated with attractive couples wearing safari suits, flyaway lapel shirts and pre-irony adverts for sewing machines and tea, are the remnants of a Valentine’s Day spoof. Very Ashoka, but so is the menu that, behind the banter, delivers flavour, freshness and a bracing dash of spice. The next 50 years look full of mouth-watering promise. Aubergenius. It’s back. After being dormant for 3 years the Brinjal Gosht is available throughout October.
Not the most popular of vegetables but that doesn’t concern us. We love the aubergine! So much so, we’ve based an entire dish around it...the ‘Brinjal Gosht’. Our kitchen has paired succulent pieces of lamb (which is so tender, it’s like eating butter) with baby vine aubergine. We’ve found the baby brinjal is less bitter and sweeter than it’s big brother. If you’re vegetarian, order the ‘Ginger Brinjal’ as a main course. Beautifully soft and lightly spiced, great with our freshly baked inhouse breads or steamed basmati rice.

Great getaway PICTURESQUE CHESHIRE MAKES FOR A VERY RELAXING BREAK, WRITES HANNAH SANDERS. elaxing on plush leather seats, in front of the cast iron stove while enjoying a tipple – or two – was an ideal way to admire the rustic chandelier and array of violins balanced delicately on wooden beams along with a picture-perfect view of blooming-foliage and lush green fields, all making for a quintessentially British setting. The Vicarage Freehouse & Rooms is nestled in the picturesque Cheshire countryside, near the River Dane. With its rustic exterior and climbing ivy, it blends perfectly into its surroundings, creating the perfect British getaway. The hotel is run by Flat Cap Hotels and inside it’s spacious and well thought out with three comfortable lounges, contemporary outdoor dining area, games room as well as light and airy conservatory area and country house style restaurant. We didn’t want our stay to end. The hotel has six exquisite signatures rooms, each with its own quirky touch such as a large chess board, which as competitive people, we took full advantage of. With its shabby-chic décor, including checked cushions, a deep blue chest, vintage gold mirror and finished with a delicately painted ‘do not disturb’ sign hung on the door, the room lived up to expectations as luxurious retreat from home.

The bedrooms are well-designed with luxury bathrooms to match – ours came with a huge bath and a rainmaker shower, the perfect place to unwind and put on your glad rags before experiencing The Vicarage’s restaurant. They source their produce locally with a menu driven by the gardener’s foragers, farmers and suppliers of Cheshire, and we were blown away. Stand-out dishes included pan-seared prawns in chilli butter, Cornish crab with a chilli and lime jam, Vicarage burger and chocolate and strawberry brulée with pastry tuille. Service throughout was immaculate. The dining area was bustling all evening, and I immediately fell for the rustic décor. From a wall of antique mirrors, to fabric animals busts, riding hats, plush velvet seats and family crests hung on the wooden beams, I felt like I was Elizabeth Bennett enjoying a weekend away with Mr Darcy. After a restful night’s sleep in the comfiest of beds, a hearty breakfast in the conservatory was just what we needed before taking a tenminute drive to Knutsford to wander around the many independent shops, enjoying the cobbled streets and brightly painted facades, before lunch at another of the family-run group’s hotels – The Courthouse. The former Crown Court has been converted into the Barristers Restaurant and
Rooftop Gardens, and the refurbishment emulates the building’s history and grandeurstyle. Sitting where the judge used to reside, looking down on the defendant – now the fully-stocked bar framed with towering plants – was a fun experience whilst we enjoyed a luxurious lunch. Stand-out dishes included Atlantic prawn and avocado sandwich, chocolate tart with caramel gel and Tatin with pineapple and caramelised puff pastry. Service was outstanding and we were treated to a tour of the grand building. The lush surroundings of The Vicarage make for the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a peaceful and memorable weekend away, whilst enjoying the close-by historic town of Knutsford with its iconic Gaskell Tower.

Join the Crewe HISTORIC NORTHUMBERLAND HAS PLENTY TO OFFER, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR – PERFECT FOR A SHORT STOPOVER. at next to a huge fireplace, surrounded by stone walls and a wooden beamed ceiling, sipping ale from tankards, this could easily be an iconic scene from Game of Thrones. But we were not at Castle Black on the icy northern border of a fictional land, we were at Lord Crewe Arms, on the border of Northumberland. Built in 1165, this hotel was originally part of Blanchland Abbey, home to the White Canons of the Roman Catholic Order. These monks famously dressed in white and as blanche is French for white, the village became known as Blanchland. This building was originally the Abbot’s lodge, guest house, kitchens and dining room, and the gardens served as cloisters for the monks of the Northumbrian moors. The abbey was dissolved in 1539 and was bought by the Radcliffes, then the Forster family, before being taken over by Lord Nathaniel Crewe in 1708. And if you like a good ghost story, they say Dorothy Forster still walks the abbey to this day. Back in the land of the living, hotel guests and visitors alike can enjoy the Lord Crewe Arms’ Crypt Bar, the cosy adjoining Derwent room, or sit next to the afore mentioned grand fireplace – just the thing in these colder months. Upstairs is the more formal Bishops dining room, but you can eat in the casual
S
surroundings of the lower fireplace room if you wish. The evening we arrived, my partner enjoyed an Isle of Wight salad with Langley Farm cottage cheese to start and a juicy flat iron steak for his main, while I had chilled, white gazpacho, followed by tender roast suckling pig porchetta with whipped polenta and spinach. Back in our room, I relished the chance to dip into the deep bathtub and cosy up to the wood burner with a cup of tea, before settling into a sumptuous double bed. The next morning we gazed out of the dining room window at the gorgeous gardens, whilst eating breakfast. I had eggs royale with salmon that had been smoked and cured on the premises. The hotel is also proud to grow its own vegetables and has a biomass shed to generate its own energy. And it’s not just a great place for a leisurely stay. There are also brilliant facilities in the adjoining Gatehouse for business conferences, containing a meeting room, sitting room and kitchen. Once we had checked out, the receptionist suggested several walks, but the bottom line was, “Whichever direction you walk in, you’ll get to the North Pennines!” With Derwent Reservoir just a couple of country miles up the road, the Crewe is wellplaced for sailing and water sports, as well as cycling, fishing and shooting. It’s also a great base for day trips to the Beamish Museum
and Hadrian’s Wall, or even for a shopping trip to Newcastle. On our walk, we came across a chicken crossing the road – a sign we were truly in the country, and the ruins of the old Shildon Engine House – a symbol of the area’s industrial past. Back in the village, we perused the traditional sweets and the homemade cards and gifts at a local shop, before going to the Monk Tearoom, an old school room-turnedcafé, for a pot of tea before returning home. So if you want to feel like the king of the castle, venture over the North Pennines or explore the nearby museums, Lord Crewe Arms in Blanchland is a cosy and comfortable home from home. What’s more, they have been named ‘Inn of the Year 2018’ by the Good Pub Guide.

Riverford recipe box
Never a dull mouthful HAVE YOU TRIED AN ORGANIC RIVERFORD RECIPE BOX? hen Chris and Mary Watson decided to embark on a new life in business together, they had no idea how lifechanging becoming part of the Riverford family would be. Now celebrating their tenth anniversary, the couple are pleased with how the business has grown across Sheffield. Before starting on their Riverford venture, Chris was an ad agency account director, whilst Mary was a university admissions officer and both had their hearts set on moving back to Sheffield – Riverford allowed them to do this. It wasn’t just the idea of being back in the Steel City that made them want to join the successful company, they also fell in love with its ethos of delivering 100 per cent organic food across Sheffield and are now fully fledged ‘veg nerds’. Riverford delivers organic fresh veg, fruit, and grass-fed meat and more straight to your door across the city, with 70 per cent of produce being grown in the UK and the meat all being reared in England. They’ve also recently launched their pre-prepared gardenfresh recipe boxes. The recipe boxes contain easy step-by-step recipes created by Riverford chefs along with

Tried and tested: And don’t just take Chris’s word for it, Westside put one of the Riverford recipe boxes to the test and produced one of our favourite dinners to date. We had the two quick meal box containing all the ingredients for either chicken noodles and Cornish salad, or vegetable fajitas – we opted to try the chicken dish. The box came full of fresh organic produce and the meat was kept chilled in insulated packaging – meaning the box arrives fresh to your door. Each ingredient comes measured out for your ease, and the recipe cards are easy to follow – with the whole meal taking only 30 minutes to cook. It was good to enjoy the fruits – or should we say vegetables – of our labour at the end. All the ingredients came together to provide a perfect combination of aromas, and the undertones of the fresh chilli added just the right amount of heat. All in all it was a quick, nutritious and flavoursome meal and we’d certainly like to try our hand at some of the other recipes.

This December, work colleagues, families and friends will be putting on their glad rags and enjoying a drink - or two - together. It is not only good for team morale but a great bonding experience for all. The key to a really good, memorable
M
Christmas ‘do’ is to make sure it is booked well in advanced, so you’re not left to find out every venue is fully booked, leaving the only option to be an office party, dancing around the photocopier to Bowie, or a home gathering where the cheesy crackers jokes are the highlight of the night. It doesn’t have to be the manager (or mum) who is tasked with the booking of the party either. Hand the party planning over to the one who loves to socialise, as they will relish the task of getting everyone on board and booking a fantastic Christmas party. So whether it’s a lavish five-course spread at a top restaurant, a dinner and dance evening
or a traditional turkey meal with all the trimmings at a cosy pub, there are plenty of venues to choose from that can accommodate your festive plans whether you are a small business with a handful of staff, a family party with a large number of guests or simply two friends celebrating the season. So, no matter what the budget or scale of your party get into the Christmas spirit and get your party booked now. If you’re short of ideas of what to do and where to host your Christmas party this year, take a look at some of the fabulous venues showcased here.

Viva Cubana! RACHEL MARTIN IS BOWLED OVER BY A FEAST OF TASTY TAPAS. he last time we ate tapas it was September in Portugal, the temperature was 30 degrees at 9pm and we were sitting almost alone on a street outside an Iberian delicatessen – I’ll never forget that first taste of patatas bravas, its softness, the depth of the potato, the love that ran through its eggy veins. September in Sheffield. It’s eight degrees at 9pm – so we opt for a seat inside – and we’re far from alone as we waltz into Cubana and find the place swarming with frivolity. But could it be as memorable as that night in Portugal? A backdrop of sweeping sax solos instantly seduced me – and half of the city it seemed – and despite the clamouring crowds inside, the staff were as cool as the place itself. “Just grab a drink and in ten minutes, there'll be a table free,” our waiter reassured me. And he was right. A Bramble cocktail later (£6.75) – a perfectly balanced homage to 1980s London, blending Bombay Sapphire gin, lemon, sugar and a drizzle of crème de mûre – and there’s space for two in the dimly-lit two-storey dining area. You’ll find seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes on the menu; we chose some classic options: tortilla Española – wedges of traditional Spanish omelette made with free range eggs, potatoes and onions; Pan y Puré de aceitunas – black olive and mixed herb tapenade served with slices of toasted focaccia bread; and mozzarella y jamón – fresh melted

mozzarella pieces wrapped in crispy Serrano ham. The dishes arrived in dribs and drabs within minutes. First up came a teeming bowl of champiñones con queso de cabra – mixed mushrooms and fresh spinach leaves – with albóndigas, Cubana’s famous meatballs made with fresh minced beef and coriander served in a tomato sauce, hard on its heels. The mushrooms were gorgeous, a mellow and sweet heaven topped by both crunchy and chewy goat’s cheese – a dish you just can’t help picking at again and again – and the hearty albóndigas were enough on their own to make us think of sunnier climes. Next up was the asado de verduras – a selection of fresh roasted Mediterranean vegetables tossed olive oil and balsamic vinegar, which made them gorgeously juicy. And it’d be plain rude to have tapas and not go for the patatas a lo pobre – small chunks of succulent and crisp sautéed potato, lightly spiced and cooked with onions, red peppers and garlic. The dish of the day for me was the cordero en vino tinto – tender lamb pieces slowly braised in punchy red wine. No two ways about it: it was a show-stopper, each mouthful in turn an outburst of onion and fresh thyme. We divided the final dishes between us – gambas pill pill, asado de verduras and chorizo – politely squabbling over who was going to eat the last, still sizzling pan-fried Spanish sausage, and found that 11 plates
between two of us, washed down by a long and refreshing El Oso (£7) – Beefeater gin, a splash of Sauvignon Blanc, St. Germain elderflower liqueur, apple and lemon – was just right. But with more than 30 different dishes to choose from, your curiosity may lead you to order more as you go along. Only a madman would have eaten anything else after this feast, but, as a connoisseur of a buttery biscuit base, I had to try the beautifully soft, baked dulce de leche and Baileys cheesecake, topped with a dusting of chocolate sauce. And for that alone I'd come back. Every single plate was completely emptied – that’s testament enough to what we thought of the meal – and on a dreary September's evening, it was all too easy to think ourselves back in another part of the world entirely. The deluxe tapas set menu is £23.50 per person. Cubana Tapas Bar Unit 4 Leopold Square, Sheffield, S1 2JG Tel: 0114 276 0475 www.cubanatapasbar.co.uk

Grassthorpe Paws take the four-legged approach to Night Strider success Four legs should prove better than two for canine friends the Grassthorpe Paws as they take up the challenge of the St Luke’s Hospice Night Strider. Pooches Basil, Dill and Max are putting their best paws forward along with owners Teresa and Martin Loxley and Julie Goude, who live in Gleadless. “We took part in Night Strider last year with two of the dogs and had a really good time,” said Max’s owner Teresa. “We know St Luke’s is a fantastic charity and we have had friends over the years who have been supported by the St Luke’s team so we know how good their levels of care are. Night Strider – sponsored by Gripple – is the annual nocturnal half marathon and 10k walking challenge that aims to raise more than £130,000 towards patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice. Starting out from Tudor Square in Sheffield city centre as darkness falls on Saturday October 7, the walk takes in some of Sheffield’s finest locations as it heads out towards Ecclesall and then back to the Tudor Square finish line. Having taken part in the 10k version of the event last year, Teresa, Martin and Julie are this year planning to put themselves to the full half marathon walking challenge. To support the dogs and their owners visit www.justgiving.com/fundraising/teresa-loxley6 and the individual entry fee is £25 – to sign up simply visit www.nightsrider.co.uk
Westbourne pupils raise more than £2,000 for Support Dogs UK Pupils at Sheffield’s Westbourne School have raised more than £2,000 for top charity Support Dogs UK. The organisation that supplies dogs to help make a difference to the lives of people with autism, epilepsy and disabilities, was chosen as the Broomhill independent school’s charity of the year for 2016/17. Throughout the year the pupils and their families organised fundraising events both inside and outside of school, including coffee and cake afternoons, a book swap day, monthly cake sales, a toy sale, bring-a-bear-to-school day, a fashion show, a Derbyshire walk and a strawberry tea afternoon. Charity representative Laura Baker visited the Westbourne Road School to receive a cheque for £2,205. The school’s charity of the year for the next 12 months will be St Luke’s Hospice. 122 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

Adding to the festive atmosphere, there will also be a hog roast, mulled wine and mince pies, with a free park and ride service from Tesco, Abbeydale Road, provided by First. Starting at 5pm, the Festival of Light is a wonderful way to remember loved ones and make a difference to the lives of St Luke’s patients. Visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk

Martin-Brooks rounds up golf buddies for fundraiser Sheffield roofing specialist, Martin-Brooks, teed up with its biggest fundraising event of the year – an 18-hole golf competition. The firm held its annual charity golf day on 8 September at Renishaw Park Golf Club. Colleagues, professional partners and friends of Martin-Brooks took part in the Stableford contest, which has become a mainstay of the firm’s fundraising efforts, raising around £2,000 each year for local charities. Playing in teams of four, participants competed for a number of prizes, including the longest drive and less prestigious “most honest golfer,” with winners announced at a post-round award presentation and twocourse meal. Dale Wright, Martin-Brooks’ contracts director and organiser of the golf day, said: “Our annual fundraiser is eagerly anticipated by all who take part and we are looking forward to welcoming the stalwarts, along with several new faces this year. The event is a great way to catch up with friends, have fun and raise much appreciated funds for the small charities we support across our home city.” Martin-Brooks pledged to raise £25,000 for Sheffield organisations, including Amy’s Retreat, Catcliffe MS Therapy Centre, Cavendish Cancer Care, Sheffield Talking News, St Vincent’s Furniture Scheme and The Rowan School.
VIBRANT VOCALITY The Sheffield Teachers’ Choir is staging its second David Clover Festival Showcase to be held at 7pm on Saturday 30 September at St. Andrew’s Church, Psalter Lane. Winners of the choir’s David Clover Festival of Singing will perform songs, duets and small ensemble items with some light choral pieces from the Teachers’ Choir. There will be all kinds of repertoire, from grand opera to songs from the shows. The Festival of Singing is a tribute to the work and memory of David Clover, the founder of the Teachers’ Choir. During the last four decades the festival has grown and many of its participants have become members of the singing professions as performers or teachers of singing, including Elizabeth Watts who has a wonderful international operatic and platform career. Others have joined opera company choruses or pursued other solo careers, many of whom have been inspired and encouraged by their involvement in the Festival. The David Clover Festival of Singing is Sheffield’s only music festival and one of only two purely local competitive singing festivals in the country. It is open to anyone from the age of nine. Two years ago the Festival introduced the “Singers’ Platform” purely for singers from universities and conservatoires making it the only local music festival in the north of England to afford part of it to the most advanced singers. The Festival Showcase is noncompetitive and its performers have the opportunity to sing without the pressure of the competitive elements of the actual festival. Tickets (including light refreshments) are £10 (adults) and £8 (concessions) and are obtainable at the door or in advance from Jackie on 0114 286 3251.

The even more powerful S variant costs £75,670. As well as the SUV model, the sleek new GLC 63 4MATIC+ Coupe is also available for £71,410 and the S model for £78,160. Both models come with a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 petrol engine, mated to an AMG Speedshift MCT nine-speed sports transmission. Non-S variants produce 476hp and 650Nm of torque, and can sprint from 0-62 mph in just four seconds. The GLC 63 S has an output of 510hp and 700Nm – it can reach 62 mph from standstill in 3.8 seconds.
All that Jazz A fresh look and new engine has been bestowed upon the Honda Jazz. To align the Jazz into the Honda family style, the front incorporates the ‘Solid Wing Face’ headlight signature and grille, more sharply sculptured front bumper and aggressive contours around the air vents while the rear, shallower grille sections are linked by a gloss black trim strip above a trapezoid lower section. An addition of metallic Skyride Blue is a new colour option too. A new 128hp petrol engine is added to the range and achieves 52.3mpg and 124 g/km of CO2. Standard equipment includes the likes of cruise control, automatic headlights, City-Brake Active safety system. Higher grades feature a seven-inch Honda Connect infotainment system, rear-view parking camera and keyless entry and start.

Keep in trim To add a little spice to the Peugeot 108’s lineup, the French company has added two new trim levels – the Collection and TOP! Roland Garros trim. Featuring a high degree of personalisation, the Peugeot 108 Collection allows owners to get creative with the car. It comes in a choice of five exterior colours with contrasting interior ambiance. The exterior is embellished with ‘speed’ decals and comes with 15-inch alloy wheels, while on the interior the theme continues with personalised carpet mats and door sills plus leather steering wheel and gear knob. Added practicality comes in the form of a seven-inch colour touchscreen, colour reversing camera, electric and heated door mirrors and Peugeot’s Open & Go keyless entry system. 130 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
Rare additions Following the Vanquish Zagato Coupe and Volante last year, Aston Martin has rounded up the ultra rare Zagato series with the Zagato Speedster and Shooting Brake. Possibly the prettiest looking cars ever created (that’s open to interpretation), the Vanquish Zagato is one of the rarest cars ever made with just 325 cars built worldwide. The Zagato Speedster is a roofless work of art with speed humps which rise up to form streamlined cowls that flow back from the seats. The Shooting Brake is a strict two-seater, but one conceived as an individual and exceptionally practical GT. Its extended roofline will certainly be an eye-catching sight on the road. All are powered by a 6.0-litre naturally aspirated V12. Expect to see them on the road in 2018.
