elcome to the October edition of Westside. We hope you’re safe and well and getting back to some sort of ‘normality’. If you’re managing to get out and about, socially distant of course, you’ll discover some fantastic independent businesses in our area. The five-mile stretch from the bottom of London Road to Baslow Road is filled with every business imaginable, from fireplaces and finance to blinds and bathrooms. We take a closer look and delve into some of the area’s history too. Elsewhere, as our children return to school, we focus on some of the leading education establishments in the area and look at Covid-compliant birthday party options for when those invitations start rolling in. We’ve been actively encouraged to holiday in this country over recent months and this looks like something that will continue into the future. With that in mind we look at some top ‘staycation’ spots. If you’re thinking about getting fit for Christmas we get some expert advice and have a look at some of things you might need to aid your journey. See you next month.

SCHOOLS

Back to school SEPTEMBER SAW THE RETURN OF CHILDREN TO FULL-TIME EDUCATION. HERE WE LOOK AT SOME OF THE LEADING EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENTS IN OUR AREA AND HOW THEY HAVE ESTABLISHED A ‘NEW NORMAL’. eturning to school in September was a step into the unknown for many children and parents. For some, they hadn’t set foot in a classroom for almost six months. It’s hard enough going back after the six-week holidays, imagine what it was like after six months? And all on the back of the Covid-19 pandemic… I have two primary school-age children whom, like the majority of the country, stopped attending at the end of March once lockdown measures were enforced. With two parents at home, homeschooling became the norm for the foreseeable future – we had timetables, lessons, games, quizzes, PE with Joe Wicks… namely anything to keep them busy and stimulated. Work was set by their school via Google Classroom and they had regular

R

20 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Zoom meetings to interact with their fellow classmates and teachers. It was different but they seemed to take it all in their stride. Come the end of May there was talk of returning to school before the summer, which raised a huge number of questions, mainly is it safe and how will it work? Of course, not all children did return but for those that did – including my children – it proved, in their case, to be a hugely rewarding and beneficial experience. I have to give huge praise to the staff at my children’s school who created a safe and welcoming environment for all returning children. All classes were split into two, creating individual bubbles, and they attended two days each week from the end of June. Staggered start and finish times, one-way systems and

consistent hand washing became their new norm. They loved seeing their friends and teachers and just those few days gave them an insight into what to expect come September. Like children do, they’ve taken the return in their stride and have quickly gotten used to one-way systems, bubbles and (sometimes) eating their lunch in their classrooms. It’s as ‘normal’ as it’s going to get for them for the foreseeable future. Schools are unaffected by the recent social changes and you get the impression that the government will do all they can to keep children in their classrooms. Over the next few pages we look at some of the leading education establishments in our area, how they have handled the return to full-time education and what they have coming up.

Mylnhurst Preparatory School & Nursery From the moment children join Mylnhurst at Nursery, they become part of the family. From day one, pupils enjoy the benefits of specialist music and language lessons, baking, an outdoor classroom and impressive onsite sports facilities, including a heated pool and a dance studio. From January, Mylnhurst are delighted to announce that the Nursery will open its doors year-round so that more parents can make the decision to begin their child’s educational journey at Mylnhurst. Pupils grow into happy, confident and compassionate young people who love learning and leave us ready to take on any challenge. There really is no better place to start!

Mount St Mary’s Mount St Mary’s College and Barlborough Hall School, near Sheffield, are one school located on two sites. This summer, Mount students achieved record results at both A level and GCSE. Forty per cent of A level grades were at A/A* and 40 per cent of pupils achieved grades 9 to 7 at GCSE. Young Mountaineers, as students are termed, are given the chance to excel academically, on the sports field and in a wealth of extra-curricular activities. The preparatory school, Barlborough Hall, provides the perfect setting for young inquiring minds as they begin on their journey of education, exploration and discovery. With deliberately small class sizes the level of care and nurturing in and outside of the classroom is simply secondto-none.

MOTIVATE. ENGAGE. INSPIRE.

New Headmistress joins the Mylnhurst School community… Mrs Hannah Cunningham has swapped the sandy shores of Jeju Island, South Korea for the rolling hills of Sheffield to join Mylnhurst Preparatory School and Nursery as their new Headmistress. Having enjoyed the last five years of her career at NLCS Jeju, where she held the position of Head of Junior School, Mrs Cunningham is thrilled to have returned home to her native Yorkshire to take up post at Mylnhurst. She says, “I am delighted to have joined this very special community. Mylnhurst is a remarkable place for children to grow and learn. Our pupils benefit enormously from the genuine warmth and care that comes with a school of our size, with just one form per year group. Both academically and pastorally, our teachers and teaching assistants give each and every child the individualised support they need to truly thrive. “At the same time, Mylnhurst has always had big ambitions when it comes to providing a world-class education for our children. The achievements of our children are testament to the quality and range of experiences they enjoy here, whether it be taking cookery tips from our chef or designing software with our computing teacher in our Apple Mac Suite, swimming in our on-site pool or discovering the wonders of science with our specialist teacher. We believe that academic achievement and exploring passions and talents beyond the classroom go hand in hand. “A Mylnhurst education starts from the day our children join us in Nursery. We will be extending our Nursery provision from January so that more parents can make the choice to join the Mylnhurst family from day one. Whilst continuing to move forwards, at Mylnhurst, we are deeply committed to maintaining the ethos and traditions that make us such a special place for children to grow up. I am so excited about what the future holds for our school.”

he last six months have been a challenging time for all of us, if you’re a parent, perhaps even more so. Homeschooling is something many of us thought we would never have to do but quickly became a way of life was we got to grips with Google Classroom, Numbots, Oak National Academy and PE With Joe. If you managed to make it through without a cross word, hat’s off to you, you deserve a medal. Now your children have returned to school all those months of hard work and endeavour to keep them educated and entertained is quickly forgotten. Talk of new teachers, new rules and what friends have been up to during lockdown has taken over. It’s about as ‘normal’ as we can get at this moment in time. This return to school and reconnection with friends also raises the question of birthday parties, particularly amongst younger children. It’ll not be long before invitations are flying out for those children who will be celebrating birthdays in the coming weeks and months. But something will have to change. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, a lot of the usual ‘go-to’ parties are no longer an option. Play centres have only just re-opened and are limiting numbers, swimming parties are a no-no and having the whole class round for tea is perhaps something that will have to wait until next year. So what’s left? Something outdoors is the first thing that springs to mind as this is the best way to minimise the chance of any infection but, depending on when your birthday is, you’re probably going to be weather dependent. If it does take a turn for the worse, there are plenty of virtual options which, let’s be honest, have become second nature to our younger ones. Here we look at some socially distant and Covid-compliant party options, inside and out.

T

Woodland magic A trip to the woods is great for children who love wildlife and it’s a wonderful way to get them active in the fresh air. Try activities including den building, scavenger hunts, nature watching and even an obstacle course.

Teddy bears picnic This can be held in your own back

garden or at a nearby park. Ask your friends to each bring a bear and gather in socially distant spaces for drinks, nibbles and maybe even a game of musical statues.

Woodland and Dino Dens amongst others. To find out more, visit justjimjams.wixsite.com.

Netflix and chill

Again, this could be held at home or any other outdoor space. Draw maps, create clues and let children have fun exploring their surroundings. You could even add a theme. Finish off with a mini picnic or event a piñata.

A Netflix party lets friends in different places watch movies or TV shows together online. Netflix Party synchronises video playback and adds group chat to your favourite Netflix shows. It’s free to use, you just need a Netflix account and the Google Chrome browser. See netflixparty.com to find out more.

Football fever

Karaoke King (and Queen)

One for the boys, outdoor football venues are now re-open and are a great way to let your children blow off some steam. Goals, who have venues throughout Yorkshire, have reinstated their birthday packages and include 90 minutes of coach-led football fun as well as some tasty food and drinks afterwards.Visit goalsfootball.co.uk to find out more.

There are no end of video conferencing and call apps and all can be put to good use when it comes to hosting a virtual karaoke party. Whether you’re using Skype, Google Hangout or House Party, everyone can join in, whether they choose to sing or not. What would your go-to karaoke song be?

Treasure hunt

Sleepover party You might want to invite a few friends over to take residence in your garden for the night. There are plenty of companies who can organise the whole thing for you, supplying tents, dens, air mattresses, fairy lights… you name it. South Yorkshire-based Just Jim Jams started last year and have quickly adapted so they can continue to host parties in the current climate. Their glamping parties, held under a huge bell tent, have been a big hit with younger children. Many of their packages are themed; you can choose from Under the Sea, Fairy

Dinner date Much like the virtual karaoke party, older children might want to host a virtual dinner party. You can cook at home or order a takeaway, chat while you eat and drink and then maybe enjoy a game of bingo, host a quiz or play charades.

Pamper party Getting your girls together might seem like a great idea but you can host a pamper party at a distance use video apps like Skype, Zoom or FaceTime. Get some beauty video tutorials set up and follow along – you can do everything from make-up and nails to hair and brows. www.sheffieldvibe.com 29

Dorset

Devon

Located in southwest England, Dorset is known for the Jurassic Coast, a long stretch on the English Channel where the cliffs contain many fossils, and rock formations show millions of years of geological history. Two prominent natural landmarks includes Durdle Door, an ancient stone arch, and the layered cliffs at Lulworth Cove. The towns of Poole, Weymouth and Swanage are popular for their sandy beaches. Dorset has a variety of museums, theatres and festivals, and is host to the Great Dorset Steam Fair, one of the biggest events of its kind in Europe. The region is also renowned for being the birthplace of notable literary figures such as Thomas Hardy, who used the county as the principal setting of his novels, and William Barnes, whose poetry celebrates the ancient Dorset dialect.

Located in south-west England, Devon is renowned for its sandy beaches, fossil cliffs, medieval towns and moorland national parks. The English Riviera is a series of picturesque, south-coast harbour towns including Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. The South West Coast Path follows the coastline, taking in the towering cliffs of the northern Exmoor Coast and rock formations on the fossil-rich southern Jurassic Coast. Devon also has a comparatively mild climate, which makes it very appealing to traditional holidaymakers. This diverse region has everything from the bustling cities of Plymouth and Exeter to an abundance of family-friendly holiday resorts in the south. Devon also has two national parks, plenty of waterways and countrysides perfect for a rural or riverside retreat.

Cornwall Located on England’s rugged south-western tip, Cornwall has been a holiday favourite for generations. Renowned for its spectacular coastline and very mild climate, the region forms a peninsula encompassing wild moorland and hundreds of sandy beaches, culminating at the dramatic granite cliffs of Land’s End. The south coast, dubbed the Cornish Riviera, is home to picturesque harbour villages such as St. Ives and Falmouth. The north coast is lined with towering cliffs and seaside resorts like Newquay, known for surfing. Extensive stretches of Cornwall’s coastline, and Bodmin Moor, are protected as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. www.sheffieldvibe.com 31

Norfolk

Stretching from the Scottish Borders to Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland is home to two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a national park. Located on the northeast coast of England, the region is renowned for its undeveloped landscape of high moorland, which is now largely protected as the Northumberland National Park. Northumberland remains largely rural and is the leastdensely populated county in England. In recent years the region has had considerable growth in tourism.Visitors are attracted to its scenic beauty, expansive beaches and historical sites. A boat trip to the Farne Islands to see the wildlife or the historic eighth century Lindisfarne Gospels on Holy Island is a must for holidaymakers.

Located in East Anglia, Norfolk is a popular tourist destination and has several major holiday attractions. The region boasts many seaside resorts, including some of the finest British beaches, such as those at Great Yarmouth, Cromer and Holkham. Alongside this, Norfolk also contains the Broads National Park and other Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Many areas of Norfolk’s coast are wild bird sanctuaries and reserves, with some areas designated as national parks such as the Norfolk Coast AONB. The region’s largest city, Norwich is renowned for its heritage, culture and shopping, as well as countless outdoor activities, a variety of family theme parks and attractions, historical sights and Royal connections.

The Lake District Located in the northwest of England, the Lake District is the largest national park in the UK. A popular vacation destination, the region is known for its glacial ribbon lakes, rugged fell mountains and historic literary associations. The Lake District is home to Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, as well as Wastwater and Windermere, the deepest and largest natural lakes in the country. Sixteen million visitors a year enjoy a wide range of activities and attractions such as camping, hiking, cycling and sailing. Market towns such as Kendal, Ambleside and Keswick on scenic Derwentwater are bases for exploring the region and are home to a variety of traditional inns, galleries of local art and outdoor equipment shops.

Wales Wales is known for its rugged coastline, mountainous national parks and Celtic culture. It has three national parks: Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire Coast. Snowdon is the highest mountain in the UK outside of Scotland and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Wales is a place of natural drama and things to do, from the country’s beautiful beaches such as Tenby, to walking the stunning mountain ranges of Snowdon. Its capital city, Cardiff, is a refined coastal city with a nightlife scene and a medieval castle with ornate Gothic Revival interiors.

Yorkshire We couldn’t put together a ‘staycation guide’ without including our very own county. Within the borders of this historic region are more national parks than any other place in the UK. This includes the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and part of the Peak District. The soaring natural beauty of the Yorkshire Dales, the stunning landscapes of the North York Moors and the dramatic hills of the Peak District have attracted more visitors than ever over the last few years, made popular by events such as the Tour de Yorkshire. Alongside its various national parks, the region also boasts beautiful seaside resorts such as Scarborough, Filey and the ever-popular Whitby. The county town of York is also a popular destination as it is home to many historic buildings such as the thirteenth century cathedral York Minster, Tudor houses and medieval walls. www.sheffieldvibe.com 33

EATING OUT

Bring back that feeling SOME THINGS YOU JUST CAN’T RECREATE AT HOME, WRITES OLIVIA WARSOP, AFTER A WELCOME RETURN TO A SHEFFIELD FAVOURITE. think we can all agree that we’ve missed the experience of ‘going out’. The atmosphere, the food, the drinks, it’s a vibe that just can’t be captured at home. So when you do go out, where do you go? I’ll be going to Cubana, and as often as I can get a table. The thing is that over lockdown I decided I wanted to use the time at

I

36 www.sheffieldvibe.com

home to become a better cook. I wanted to know how to make my own pasta, I wanted to perfect my Victoria sponge and more than anything I wanted to be able to cook tapas (and have it all be hot at the same time). And I was very happy with my progress. Until, we went to Cubana. There is a secret to delicious food that they have and I don’t and that’s ok because their food also came with a

festive atmosphere and a myriad of cocktail choices. So what can you expect when you arrive? Cubana has managed to seamlessly incorporate social distancing into their customer service and upon arriving we were greeted by a host and directed to our table. He explained that there is a QR code on each table which diners can use to bring the menu up on

037 WSide Oct20 11/09/2020 11:27 Page 1

EATING OUT

their mobile device, eliminating the need for a physical menu. While perusing our choices we ordered a few cocktails from their extensive drinks menu. Wine starts at £4.60 a glass and they offer a wide selection of bottled and draught beers and ciders. Over 40 cocktails are listed on their menu and in case that was too few to choose from there’s also entire sections dedicated to shots and after dinner drinks. So while sipping on Midori Sours (£7.25) we investigated the tapas menu. Cubana provide a useful guide to help diners determine how many dishes to order per person, for example if you are famished they advise ordering five dishes each but if you’re only a little hungry then one or two. Although I challenge anyone to sit and watch the dishes be brought to your neighbouring tables and not just say ‘we’ll have one of everything please!’ We started with the Antipasto Español, a selection of Spanish cured meets with olives and cheese served with sourdough bread and a tomato and olive oil dip (two people sharing £15.50).The mains are all brought out together and you can dip in and out of each dish throughout the meal. Chorizo y huevo con patatas arrived first, crispy potato pieces sautéed with spicy chorizo and topped with a fried egg (£5.95), followed quickly by Pincho de

pollo, tasty grilled chicken marinated with paprika, garlic and cumin served on a skewer with sweet roasted red peppers (£5.95). Next, a creamy wild mushroom risotto made with Arborio rice, onions and olive oil topped with sharp parmesan cheese, Risotto con seta (£5.75). A personal favourite was the Jamón y queso de cabra, rich, oven baked goats cheese wrapped in Serrano ham and served on a bed of caramelised red onions (£6.50). Additionally, Gambas tigres, huge tiger prawns coated in breadcrumbs and served with garlic mayonnaise and salad garnish (£5.50). And finally Pincho de ternera, grilled pieces of mouth-wateringly tender ribeye steak on a skewer with peppers, marinated in olive oil with garlic and fresh lime (£6.95). We finished off with dessert, although where we found the room is one of the greater mysteries of the universe. A beautifully delicate short crust pastry tart with lemon patisserie cream, La Tarta De La Abuela on the menu, (£4.95) and a luxuriously smooth and refreshing mango sorbet served in a sundae bowl with orange to garnish (£5.50). Cubana has a very inclusive menu offering something for everyone; they have an entire vegan menu with over 15 dishes, as well as 30 gluten-free dishes. If you’re fancying an early dinner then they also run ‘Happy Tapas’ deals every day

before 5.30pm with any two tapas dishes for £9.50 or £5 off either of their set menus (Tapas Set Menu £20.95 per person receiving a share of 12 dishes or Deluxe Tapas Set Menu £24.95 per person receiving a share of 12 dishes with the addition of the Antipasto Español sharing starter). And get yourself a drink with this as during this time they also offer all classic and signature cocktails for only £5 and selected wine at £3 and selected bottled beers at £3. The entire evening was spectacular, from the service to the food, and if you’re ready for that much needed evening out then Cubana does it all. My advice would be to make sure you go hungry! The food is too amazing not to try at least several dishes and the party atmosphere warrants a drink or two for good measure. So dig out your best outfit and book a table! Raise your glasses SOMETHING NEW IS BREWING AT ASHOKA, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

wouldn’t say I’ve been to Ashoka a lot but when owner Rahul Amin started to explain the menu and recommend dishes, I found myself repeatedly saying ‘tried that’, ‘had that’, ‘loved that’… Sorry, Rahul. Truth is, it’s hard to find a weak spot in Ashoka’s menu and if you stray from the tried and tested – Karamelised KashmiriTM, Taxi Driver CurryTM for example – you still know that whatever you order, it’s going to be fantastic, as this recent visit proved. When most pubs and restaurants reopened on 4 July, Rahul decided to remain closed and took his time to consider the best way to bring back the

I

40 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Ashoka experience without having to make too many compromises. Anyone who’s been to the Ecclesall Road restaurant will know it’s a small, but achingly hip, space with bench seating down the left-hand side and booths on the right. The layout is still the same but Rahul has introduced movable screens between tables, which can be positioned accordingly depending on the size of your party. They match the existing furniture perfectly and allow as many diners in as possible without compromising social distancing rules. There’s still plenty of friendly and familiar faces amongst the waiting staff and service is exemplary, as always. Back to the menu and after shooting

down Rahul’s initial suggestions – again, sorry – we made our selections. There was no changing the poppadoms (90p) and 1960s pickle tray (85p per person) to start and they paired perfectly to something I hadn’t tried at Ashoka before – their very own beer. Rahul has worked with Triple Point Brewery on Shoreham Street to create two beers; #ReytBev is an easy drinking 4.1% ABV session lager, perhaps less gassy than you’re used to, while ElenitaTM is a citrusy and vibrant 4.5% ABV session IPA. Both are priced £5.25 and served in 440ml cans. I particularly liked the India pale ale; it was incredibly fresh tasting and complemented our curries deliciously.

041 WSide Oct20 11/09/2020 14:10 Page 1

EATING OUT

Aside from the own brews, there’s a good selection of craft ales at Ashoka with offerings from the likes of Thornbridge, Loxley and Abbeydale breweries as well as Brewdog and Samuel Adams. My wife eschewed the ale offering, opting for a Hendrick’s gin and tonic (£7.50, large) instead. Suitably watered and appetites piqued, we moved onto our starters – cricket pakora (£4.90) for me and 48-hour chicken tikka (£7) for my better half. The pakoras, of which there were four, are based on grandma’s mixed vegetable recipe and were traditionally served when India played cricket. There was no sound of leather on willow on this occasion, or shouts of ‘owzat!’, but they were a treat all the same, crispy on the outside, light and fluffy in the middle and packed with a delicate spicy flavour. The chicken tikka, which had been marinated for two days, had that vivid crisp, red appearance and was deliciously moist in the middle. Ashoka do things a little differently with their curries, which are available with chicken (£12.50), lamb (£13.50), mixed vegetables (£11), prawn (£12.50) or king prawn (£14). Flavour comes first, so, for example, if you like sweet onions try a Karamelised KashmiriTM, fresh spinach opt for Mr Singh’s Saag KaraiTM, or roasted cashew nuts, the Makhan-Wallah. Strength of spice is advertised on the menu but each dish can be cooked to preference. My Kalcutta KaraiTM, served with chicken, had a classic ginger and garlic base with added fresh green chillies for a spice hit. It ticked all the boxes for flavour – fresh, aromatic with plenty of heat.

“Small changes aside, the whole experience didn’t feel compromised at all and was the same Ashoka we’ve come to know and love.”

Ashoka first opened in Sheffield in 1967 and is one of the city’s original Indian restaurants. I say this as founder Kamal Ahmed provides the inspiration for my wife’s dish, Lamb Methi Special, which is listed on the menu as his favourite curry. A rich and earthy fenugreek sauce was the perfect partner to some of the softest lamb we have ever tasted. Rahul explained that the lamb is poached first to make to even more tender, to the point where you shouldn’t need a knife to cut it. We certainly didn’t on this occasion; it was tremendous. For sides we kept things simple – pilau rice (£4) and garlic charcoal baked butter naan (£3.50). We didn’t need anything else. Chatting to Rahul throughout our meal, he confided that the lockdown period gave him time to reflect and he wondered about coming back at all. Thankfully, he admitted that re-opening has re-ignited his passion and a full restaurant is testament to how much the people of Sheffield love this place. I don’t think they’d be letting him go anywhere quite so soon. Small changes aside, the whole experience didn’t feel compromised at all and was the same Ashoka we’ve come to know and love. We’ll be back, and may even revisit some of those favourite dishes. Giving something back SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL, AND ITS COFFEE AND GIFT SHOP, HAS RE-OPENED TO THE PUBLIC AND HAS SOME VERY SPECIAL FREE EVENTS LINED UP. heffield Cathedral is a beacon of light for so many people in the city and the site which it occupies has been a place of worship for over 1,000 years. After taking the unprecedented step of having to close during lockdown, in line with government guidelines, it finally reopened to the public in July. Daily services have resumed and at present the Cathedral is open 11am-2pm. In October this will be extended to 10am4pm. From November the Cathedral is hoping to be able to welcome visitors, 9am-5pm. But there’s so much more to Sheffield Cathedral. The 1554 Coffee & Gift Shop supports the working life of the Cathedral and has proved a big draw for visitors over the years. It also offers a calm environment away from the hubbub of a busy city for both shoppers and office workers. At the time of writing, finishing touches were being put in place to enable the re-opening of the popular award-winning coffee shop, which will be operating with limited opening times (Thursdays and Fridays at first), a reduced menu and table service. Their Heavenly Coffee range will still be available meaning you can once again enjoy a brew and a slice of one of their many homemade cakes. “The coffee shop had become a busy hub in the heart of the city; a coffee shop built by the Cathedral and for the Cathedral,” said Ruth Maher, Enterprise Business Manager. “We have a lot to learn and adapt to, so please bear with us

as we try to find our new normal.” The gift shop re-opened in August and is sited at the entrance to the Cathedral. It stocks everything from cards to candles, bags, confectionary, gift wrap, souvenirs, books, Christian resources and a fantastic range of Sheffield made products including Henderson’s Relish and Printed By us. More recently it has been selling coffee and Our Cow Molly ice cream to take away. To sit alongside the increased opening hours, Sheffield Cathedral will be hosting a number of events in the run-up to Christmas, the first of which will be ‘The Leaves of the Trees’. This will run from 3-29 October and is a new touring art installation designed to give people the opportunity to reflect on the impact the Coronavirus pandemic has had on them and their communities. ‘The Leaves of the Trees’ is made up of 5,000 steel leaves, each featuring the word ‘HOPE’. These will be laid out on the floor of the Cathedral, creating an impression of fallen autumn leaves. It was created by sculptor, Peter Walker, who said the leaves were symbolic of the times we were living in: “Steel has been chosen as the material to remind us of our resilience and collective strength. As the artwork tours the country the steel will age, rust and change colour, just as the leaves of trees do when they fall each year. “In nature fallen leaves are essential to prepare the planet for spring and new growth and it is hoped that the simplicity and beauty of this installation will give people the chance to pause and

contemplate their own experience, and also reflect on the wider situation we find ourselves in.” ‘The Leaves of the Trees’ will be followed by ‘The Foundry’ 23 October21 November and ‘In The Beginning’, running 1-6 December. Once again, the exterior of the Cathedral will be illuminated by a spectacular light show. This will be FREE for the whole city to enjoy, being a gift from the Cathedral to the people of Sheffield at the end of a difficult and challenging year for everyone. You can read more about these events in future editions of Westside. Whether you attend for prayer, reflection or a good cup of coffee, visitors are always welcome at Sheffield Cathedral. The Jumbotron has landed! THE WILDCARD BAR & GRILL IS WORTH WAITING FOR. he covers are about to come off. Any day now we will find out what’s been going on behind those carefully-screened windows away from prying eyes. It’s been two years in the making. And general manager of the new The Wildcard Bar & Grill, Jack Hartley, can hardly contain his excitement. “This is going to be something the likes of which Sheffield has never seen before,” he confidently predicts. This will amaze everyone.” The Wildcard Bar & Grill stands proudly on Ecclesall Road, on the site of the former Napoleons Casino. The name may well be a nod to its previous incarnation, but Jack says the only thing anyone can bet on these days will be that there’s now the perfect venue for families and devotees of good bars alike. “We want it to be a place where families, groups and couples can feel comfortable, the kind of place that welcomes you to bring your kids, enjoy a burger and cocktail whilst taking in the match.” Westside was given privileged access for a sneak preview of what’s been going on behind those covered windows all this time. When we visited, the finishing touches were being put to the building works and intensive staff training was going on amid the hubbub. Walk through the entrance and visitors are confronted with a spectacular island bar area which will be serving a huge array of beers from all over the world, both draught and bottled, as well as good-value wines, soft drinks and cocktails. The bar is crowned by a huge Jumbotron. For those unfamiliar with the term, it’s that enormous cube-like structure of the kind seen at ice arenas, the one that displays the scores at ice hockey matches. However, this one will be showing live sports events on large screens. And if you

prefer something more private, there are booths where small groups can watch the action on their own exclusive small screen. If fact, the whole place is wall to wall screens. The display cabinets stood ready to receive the sporting memorabilia that will add to the décor and there are other touches, such as a photowall where

groups can take snaps. There’s an imposing mezzanine floor where brightly-lit displays proclaim famous beers familiar to all lovers of good bars. The food complements the general luxury sports bar theme with an extensive main menu, kids menu and special selection of stone-baked pizzas. Choose from a menu offering tomahawk steak, Wildcard piri chicken, Ahi tuna sashimi, lamb shish kebab and seafood treats like Cajun tiger prawns and king scallops or Bajan blackened cod, not to mention a healthy range of fresh salads. Or perhaps you might be tempted by bang-bang shrimp, chicken wings or a wide range of burgers? It’s dishes like this where The Wildcard Bar & Grill really has the edge. That’s due in no small part to the fact that the head chef is none other than Mikey Freeman of Yankees fame. It’s almost worth coming just to sample his famous cheese sauce which features on the burgers too. Jack says the aim is to create a destination venue, one where customers can enjoy everything under one roof – the complete night (or day) out. The opening was delayed by several months due to a certain virus, so he is delighted the long wait is over. “It’ll be worth waiting for,” he says. EATING OUT

Divine intervention A CALL TO THE KITCHEN SET ALFREDO GECI ON THE ROAD TO SUCCESS. few of those among us know exactly where they’re going in life. For others, a sense of vocation isn’t something discovered, often by chance, until much later. Just ask Alfredo Geci. His route to becoming the owner of a successful restaurant was somewhat unusual. He’d be the first to admit that cooking was not in the genes – for several years he was studying to go into the priesthood. Still in his early twenties, and having had a Saul on the road to Damascus moment of realisation, he decided being a man of the cloth was not for him and moved from Italy to England. “I couldn’t boil an egg when I arrived here. Then I studied catering and hospitality at college and I knew this was what I really wanted to do – and from then on my ambition was to have my own restaurant,” said Alfredo. And it has to be said he achieved that in style. With a well-established Italian restaurant at the heart of the Ecclesall

A

Road circuit, he has also had the ultimate recognition of being voted Best Italian in this very magazine’s annual restaurant awards. “There are a lot of Italians in Sheffield so I was over the moon when we won the award. But there is no greater compliment than seeing customers leave happy. It’s all down to our passion for good food.” And so it came to pass that we visited the remarkable Mr Geci to put Maranellos to the test. The restaurant is easy to find, sitting slightly back from the kerbside on Ecclesall Road with a front terrace which would be delightful on a summer evening, were it not for local regulations putting a spanner in the works. Now it is true Eccy Road is in certain circles held to be the stamping ground of the poseur. Not that I think for a moment that the gentleman who drove his Ferrari 458 past the window was anything of the sort.

I put the fact that he did it six times the length of the road and back solely down to the fact that he was lost. There are photos on the wall of Ferraris at Maranellos, but pretence? Not a bit of it. The restaurant doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is, namely, a good solid Italian that’ll please everyone in the family. Our family group was certainly pleased with an appetising array of starters, which we shared among us. Bruschetta Classica (£5.95) arrived alongside Asparagus con prosciutto (£6.95) and, what by general consensus was the best dish of the night, Arancini con salmone from the specials board – delicious rice balls with smoked salmon, deep-fried and served in a tomato sauce. The pick of the main course came in the shape of Crespella (£10.95), a satisfying concoction of ricotta and spinach-filled pancake, covered with bechamel sauce and served bubbling hot from the oven. A well-judged risotto with porcini mushrooms (£11.25) completed the line-up. A bottle of Aglianico (£24) and a good Valpolicella (£24.50) meant we had to forsake the Ferrari for an Uber, but who cares? Maranellos is the genuine article. Blessings be upon it. DYSON PLACE

The place to be REBECCA WALES MAKES A NEW DISCOVERY. yson Place is a new courtyard scheme just off Sharrowvale Road with access between J.H. Mann Fishmongers and The Mediterranean restaurant. With food, fashion, interiors and top haircuts, it’s quickly becoming the place to be seen – especially when the sun’s shining on that courtyard. The neighbouring Artisan’s Yard was created to have small ‘mesters’-style workshops that hark back to Sheffield’s old industrial days but with a modern commercial twist. The whole development is backed by a residential block of two-bedroomed flats, which are available to rent (although only one is vacant at present). Hundreds of years ago, Dyson Place was farmland, owned by one Eliza Dyson (or so the story goes) whom the road was named after – although it was called Dyson Lane first. More recently it was home to two rows of residential terraced houses and The Mission Hall, a church meeting hall for the Parish of Sharrow built in 1901 but for years used as

ANTIQUES

Face values COULD YOU BE CARRYING A FORTUNE AROUND ON YOUR WRIST? IN THE FIRST OF A NEW SERIES FOCUSING ON ANTIQUES AND COLLECTABLES, WESTSIDE LOOKS INTO THE WORLD OF THE WATCH COLLECTOR. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. ot the time please? Let’s hope so, because time is one of the most influential factors in determining the value of that gleaming hunk of metal and jewels you’re so proudly wearing. After a few years have elapsed, it’ll still be telling the hours, but it will eventually become a vintage watch, pursued by collectors all over the world. But before pound signs dance merrily away in your visual field, sorry, we’re going to have to break it gently… the battered Timex you received as a 16th birthday present is not currently at the top of the list of targets sought after by aficionados. We are talking about watches that have that vital ingredient – the prestige that derives from the maker’s name. And they do not come any grander than Patek Philippe. By general consent, they are at the very top of the tree. With a few arguable exceptions, the rest of the famous names belong in the chasing pack. So what is it about this particular maker that prompts someone to spend a small fortune for the reassurance of seeing the name emblazoned on the dial every time you glance at it? A Derbyshire businessman has two Patek Philippes. One of them, bought for £21,000 a few

G

years back would now fetch nearer £55,000. But it isn’t the monetary value that drives his passion for collecting. “They are certainly not just bling,” he says. “Right from being a young boy interested in engineering, I understood how gearing works. And some of the top watches are remarkable pieces of engineering. “For instance, a watch might have 24 rubies in its movement. They are not there just for decoration. They are an integral part of the working mechanism. And rubies cost money, hence the prices of the finished article.” But even Patek Philippe can’t claim the same rarity value that surrounds the creations of another maker much beloved by formula one racing drivers. That maker is Frank Mille, who produces timepieces in absurdly small quantities. “It is literally a case of one guy sitting on a Swiss mountainside making watches. Because of the rarity, they can change hands for up to £250,000.” But even that staggering sum pales into insignificance when the other vital factor is taken, that of provenance. To you or me that means who had the watch previously. If it was someone famous, the difference in value

An appreciating asset… Rolex Submariner £11,500 from PA Jewellery Sheffield

can be breathtaking. Ian Cookson of PA Jewellery in Sheffield is something of an authority on watches, but even he was stunned when Steve McQueen’s old one went under the hammer recently. “It set a new record price of $17million at auction. The price was driven by the provenance – a watch of the same specification without that link would be worth $150,000,” said Ian. Back in the realms of real life, there are numerous makers which are highly desirable and accessible to those who are looking for an investment which can be used and enjoyed every day.

ANTIQUES

But the first problem that could confront a would-be collector is actually getting hold of some of the more soughtafter examples. In many cases, it’s impossible to go down the retail route. Potential customers are invited to buy new watches, and that invitation is hard to come by. The greater the maker’s repute, the harder it will be to get hold of one. The thinking behind this is to reduce the chances of a secondary market emerging due to buyers looking to make a quick profit by selling on. That means existing customers get first choice when a new model comes along and you may face a long wait for one to appear on the market. Ian cites the example of a Rolex Submariner commissioned by the armed

forces in the 1970s. Only 2,000 were made and many of these have suffered irreparable damage or loss in the years since, increasing their rarity value. One example, compete with military markings, was sold by Ian for £11,000 – a far cry from the £162,000 which another with only slight cosmetic and detail differences fetched as collectors got the scent. Rolex, especially the gold variety, were once the embodiment of eighties flash cash. These days, the brand is second only to Patek Philippe. Omega were once held to be some way behind but with increasing interest in vintage watches, they have been catching up with Rolex in some instances. “People who could pick up a Rolex for two or three thousand pounds have seen the same

model rise to eight to ten thousand, and may now be looking to spend two or three thousand on an Omega. The knock-on effect has brought an increase in prices for Omega, which are now highly desirable as investments.” In turn, the ground vacated by Omega has benefitted the likes of Longines. If you’re still worried by what your watch says about you, don’t be. As Ian says, the trend is towards refinements in production rather than ostentation. “You wouldn’t give some of them a second glance. If anything, they are remarkably understated.”

THE ROAD TO DERBYSHIRE

Looking back THE FIVE-MILE STRETCH FROM LONDON ROAD TO BASLOW ROAD IS FILLED WITH HISTORY - AND PLENTY OF THINGS TO SEE AND DO.

The Abbeydale station hotel, now better known as Beauchief Hotel, circa 1918

f you start your journey at the bottom of London Road and head south-west along Abbeydale Road and eventually Abbeydale Road South, you’ll find yourself in Totley on the edge of the Peak District. You’ll pass many familiar landmarks along the way – Highfield Library, Abbeydale Picture House, Beauchief Hotel and Dore and Totley train station – although much has changed on this near five-mile stretch over the years. In the book Abbeydale Road: A photographic journey from Highfield Library to Totley Rise, author Chris Keeling traces follows its history, some of which you may or may not know. For instance, did you know that the thoroughfare passes through several districts which are all part of the Abbey Dale or Valley? One of these areas is Beauchief and its Abbey after which Abbeydale is named. The River Sheaf almost runs parallel to Abbeydale Road and Abbeydale Road South and was vital to the many

industries that occupied the area decades ago, many of which you can find out about at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet. The works, once a producer of agricultural tools and the largest waterpowered industrial site on the river, is now a free-to-visit museum and gives a

glimpse of what life was like in 18th century Sheffield. You can see the Manager’s House and Worker’s Cottage, waterwheels, workshops, tilt hammers, a grinding hull, steam engine and the last complete surviving crucible steel furnace in the UK.

Millhouses Park stretches along a considerable stretch of Abbeydale Road and is popular with the whole family, from children who want to use the play areas, boating lake or skate park to sports enthusiasts who use the tennis courts, bowling greens or gym equipment. It’s also home to a hugely popular café which has ample seating inside and out. Abbeydale Road forms a large part of Sheffield’s ‘Antiques Quarter’ and is full to the brim with tempting treasures, retro finds and plenty of independent shops selling everything from quirky interiors to vintage clothing and more. The area has also undergone something of a renaissance in recent years and has become a hugely popular food and drink destination, particularly around the Sheldon Road/Broadfield Road junction. Here you’ll find tempting pies at The Broadfield, Mother’s Ruin (and more) at The Gin Bar, small plates of fine food at The Teller and craft ales at Two-Thirds Beer Co. Move on the up the road and there’s Barrowboys (cocktails, beer, bao buns), Picture House Social (pizza, pingpong, live music) and Forge Bakehouse (fresh bread and pastries to die for) – and that’s only a small example. Over the next few pages we’ll be taking a closer look at some of the businesses, long-standing or otherwise, that add further interest to this hugely important stretch of road.

Chinatown The Chinatown restaurant is virtually the first door you come to on Sheffield’s unofficial Chinatown district on London Road. It’s here that owner Martin Ng is leading the way in a quest for excellence above all else. In what was for years the landmark Candytown restaurant, he has wrought a transformation not only in the appearance of the place, but in the standards of cuisine served there. “When I took the place over, we absolutely tore the interior apart and started again. My aim was to create a totally different look to reflect a new start in the kitchen. I brought three expert chefs over with me from Hong Kong so we could be sure we had the best team behind us,” said Martin. The new emphasis is on quality of ingredients and above all freshness. 27 London Road, Sheffield, S2 4LA Tel: 0114 272 5311 / www.chinatownrestaurant.co.uk

No matter how large or how modest, everyone has an estate and you will want to control how it is administered to the people or organisations you care most about. There are lots of points to consider such as making a will, appointing a Lasting Power of Attorney or creating the right Trust to protect your assets and help your beneficiaries. It is important to plan ahead with confidence in order to minimise the tax burden for your family and loved ones in the future.

Business owners can gain business relief which makes their business exempt. However, when the business is sold, the sale proceeds are inside their estate for Inheritance Tax and 40% tax beckons. It is possible to re-invest into qualifying investments where the previous business reliefs are retained.

Many people will hold considerable investments and share portfolios that form part of their estate on death. It is possible to transfer some or all of those assets into alternative vehicles that fall outside of your estate after 2 years. You can also retain access to the capital in case you need it. This is achieved by utilising business property relief which results in 100% relief from inheritance tax on the amount invested after a maximum of two years.

A couple own a house worth £700K. They also have –

If your estate is valued at over £1M, as many increasingly are, then a Inheritance Tax Review is advisable. Here’s an example of how it works:

ISA’s

£100K

Share portfolio

£350K

Buy-To-Let houses

£500K

Their total estate comes to £1.65M. Assuming they have 2 Nil-rate bands of £325K each (£650K) plus a main residence nil-rate band of £175K each (£350K), it is possible for most people to pass on £1M of

their estate tax free. In this example there is a £650K excess taxed at 40% so the tax bill would be £260K. If the above clients transferred their existing share portfolio of £350K into an exempt asset, it would reduce their Inheritance Tax bill by £140K and they would still have control of their money, be able to access it at any time and receive a stable return. More and more people are seeing the increase in house prices pushing their estate values higher and higher. The Government raise billions each year from people sleep walking into higher and higher taxes. It is time to act now. Call us on 0114 235 3500 or email us at advice@hamnettwealth.com for a free consultation to find out how we can help you. Our recommendations will take into account all of your investments, retirement and protection strategies so that your estate planning fits your goals.

Kinetic Chiropractic A chiropractor’s main role is to assess your spinal and skeletal alignment as well as your joint function. As we journey through life we have knocks, falls and tumbles which can cause skeletal misalignment and tissue damage, which we experience as inflammation and pain. Nina Sawczyn-Marsh recently opened Kinetic Chiropractic on Abbeydale Road South and has been in practice for 16 years. On your initial visit to Kinetic Chiropractic, which takes approximately 45 minutes, you will be required to complete a health history questionnaire before attending the clinic. Nina will then take a thorough case history of your current complaints and pervious injury and illnesses. At present, Kinetic Chiropractic is being run without a chiropractic assistant, which means that social distancing is easy to maintain. If more than one person is in reception at one time from different households masks should be worn. Nina will be wearing appropriate PPE during consultations. 292 Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield, S17 3LP Tel: 07796 280233 / kineticchiropractic.co.uk 84 www.sheffieldvibe.com

On the right lines CHIROPRACTIC PUTS THE FOCUS ON YOUR BONES, MUSCLES AND JOINTS.

hiropractic is a primary health care profession, being the third largest after medicine and dentistry and there are over ten million visits to chiropractors in the UK each year. Chiropractic is a regulated profession overseen by the General Chiropractic Council and as such is governed by statute. This means that all chiropractors are required to keep up to date with continuing professional development (CPD) so you can be sure that you will receive the best possible care for your complaint. Chiropractors treat problems with joints, muscles and nerves, including all joints of the body but mainly concentrating on the spine. This is

C

88 www.sheffieldvibe.com

achieved by using gentle specific manipulation which chiropractors call adjustments. There are two main aspects to musculoskeletal health that chiropractors focus on – skeletal alignment and joint function. Skeletal alignment can become distorted either by direct trauma such as a fall or impact or slowly over time with poor posture or muscular imbalances associated with repetitive stress. Joint function is reduced as a result of scar tissue formation following a strain injury to ligaments. Just as walking on the outside of shoes will cause them to wear more quickly, the same is true of joints under excess loading which is the underlaying mechanism of osteo-arthritis. A twisted

pelvis will create a short leg and uneven loading through the hips and lower back. A pronated or flat foot will cause internal rotation of the knee on that side. An overly tight pectoralis muscle will cause internal rotation of the shoulder joint. Whiplash will cause weakened postural neck muscles and anterior head carriage. By restoring joint function and improving skeletal alignment with chiropractic adjustments the body can heal, repair and be restored towards optimum health. Kinetic Chiropractic Clinic opened in August and its principle chiropractor Nina Sawczyn BSC MSC DC graduated from the AECC in 2004. She spent her first three years in practice in Costa Rica

which “was a fantastic experience as well as challenging”. She returned to the UK in 2007 and has been based in Worksop for the last ten years where she still currently practices three days a week. Chiropractic is suitable for everyone, from babies to the elderly and over the years, Nina has treated thousands of people from all walks of life. Chiropractors look at each person individually and will tailor a treatment plan specific to each person’s needs and overall health challenges and ultimate goals. They do not use drugs or surgery, it is very safe, has a large body of evidence supporting its outcomes and is supported in numerous government guidelines. “My youngest patient was just a couple of weeks old and had a difficult delivery requiring forceps,” Nina says. “Her neck was restricted and laying constantly on her back with her head to the left was causing her cranial bones to flatten on that side (plagiocephaly). “With just a few very gentle treatments her neck movement was restored and once she started laying with her head to the right her cranial bones corrected quickly and her head shape was beautiful.” Her eldest patient to date was a lady called Mabel. “Mabel was a marvellously funny lady who at 96 had asked her GP why her right knee hurt so much,” explains Nina. “The GP responded ‘well Mabel, you have to expect some aches and pains at your age,’ to which she shot back, ‘well my left knee is 96 and that doesn’t hurt at all!’.” Health is a sliding scale which is in constant motion. Sometimes we are moving up that scale with exercise, great diet, getting rested sleep and enjoying new hobbies or relationships. At other times we are sliding down that scale when life gets stressful such as moving house, changing jobs, divorce or losing a loved one. At these times it is more likely that we are paying less attention to our health choices. Once our bodies reach a critical point of load we experience symptoms such as headaches, neck or back pain, getting a cold or an upset stomach. These symptoms are our bodies’ way of telling us that it can no longer cope with the level of stress. “If we rely upon medication to mask these symptoms we may as well be taking the battery out of our smoke alarm!” Nina says. “If we continue without addressing the underlying issues our bodies will continue to struggle and our health will deteriorate further. This

The new premises at Abbeydale Road South

in turn will lead to more medication and more symptoms.” Talk to your chiropractor or GP and ask why you may be getting symptoms and what lifestyle changes you can make to help your body heal and repair rather than rushing for a pill. “Look after your body, you can’t buy a new one and the repair parts are never quite a good as the original.Your body is the most precious thing you’ll ever own,” Nina concludes.

SCIENCE

Capture science in all its glory NORTH STAR ARE BRINGING COMMUNITIES TOGETHER THROUGH SCIENCE. TAKE PART – BE A STAR AND SUBMIT A PHOTOGRAPH TO AN INTERACTIVE GALAXY. cience is everywhere – from the moment the sun rises, right through to the stars in the night sky. It inspires, helps save lives, challenges us and educates. This is why it’s important we celebrate science itself and the brilliant minds behind it whenever we can. North Star: a People’s Picture is doing just that. Working in partnership with some fantastic organisations and schools in Rotherham, the interactive artwork aims to bring people together to celebrate a love of science and the great minds who have charted a course through innovation in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths. The artwork is being created by The People’s Picture, a photography and design studio. Every piece of artwork they create is made up of thousands of images, with every piece telling its own story – North Star is no different. Every image submitted has space for a caption to tell the world about what their photograph means to them. And although the images need to represent science, that doesn’t just mean space, planets and rockets. Science really is all around us, from the kettle in your kitchen and your mobile phone, right through to growing vegetables, rock formations and even buildings!

S

90 www.sheffieldvibe.com

So far, the project has had a host of wonderful images, including a homemade rocket backpack, beautiful drawings of planets, and photos of inventions that have changed lives. Helen Marshall, artistic director CEO of The People’s Picture said: “I’m proud to have been invited as an artist to explore the stories and pictures from the community. I’m excited to harness the technology at the intersection between science and art – bringing together the wonderful pictures and stories to make one beautiful piece of artwork to celebrate STEAM and its impact of the community.” Kris Mackay, Programme Manager for Well Rotherham added: “All of us involved in this project believe that inspired communities can chart their own path to health, wealth and happiness. We know that our communities are full of inspirational stories and we’re excited to be able to share them in such a unique way.” To take part, visit www.northstarscienceschool.co.uk and upload your favourite photograph that represents how science has inspired you. Add a photo caption so the team know a bit more about the image – then watch it be added to their galaxy! You’ll also be able to look through the other photographs that have been submitted.

SCIENCE

What’s the history behind The North Star? The art project is running ahead of the North Star, a Science Summer School Event, which will be a week-long event from 1 December. The event is part of Professor Brian Cox’s Science Summer School which was started in partnership with Lord Andrew Mawson and has been running for eight years. It mixes the best of the STEAM subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths – through seminars, discussions and hands-on experiments. Last summer, the North Star partnership, led by Well Rotherham and including Rotherham and Sheffield Councils, Harworth Group, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, UK Atomic Energy Authority, Rolls-Royce and Gulliver's Valley, were lucky enough to support 23 young people from Rotherham on a three-day trip to London to take part in the school. It was always the intention of Professor Cox and Lord Mawson to create a northern satellite event and Rotherham was chosen to pioneer the northern expansion. Rochelle Gilburn Rochelle Gilburn is the director of Gilburn Investment Group. She is a single mum to two children who are aged four and six. Rochelle’s husband sadly passed away in 2018 and she has since built their lives back up and began to focus on the future. “There’s nothing like losing a loved one to make you realise life is too short, we have to make the most of it,” she said. “That is one of the reasons I started the company. “I love to help people and the main focus of my business is exactly that… I help busy professionals looking for ways to invest their money. I help them to build a property portfolio with a good monthly cash flow without the stress and time consuming tasks of viewing, negotiating, renovating and letting. I also offer fixed return investment opportunities for the more sophisticated investor. “I love the variety I get with my business, some days I’m working on a three-bed terraced refurb, other days I’m negotiating deals over a £5million block of flats, no project is too big or too small. I love property! However, a lot of my clients aren’t interested in property… They’re interested in the returns and the lifestyle it can give them. An extra holiday a year, working less hours and being able to retire that little bit earlier are a few of the goals I hear. And it’s a great feeling to know that I am helping them reach that target.” If you’re looking to create a passive income and the lifestyle it can give you, please get in touch. You can connect with me on LinkedIn or email feel free to send me an email rochelle@gilburninvestmentgroup.com

Lisa Allan Lisa is a lifestyle and business mentor, with 30 years experience in health, she is making great strides in sharing opportunities on wellness, helping individuals improve their personal health and mentoring those who are interested in developing a lifestyle business. Gut health is something she feels particularly passionate about and she regularly does free talks via Zoom as well as hosting support groups through the Synergy Worldwide 21-day Gut Reset Programme. Did you know that 95 per cent of serotonin, nature’s very own antidepressant or the “happy hormone” is produced in our guts? So, if you suffer with depression or low mood, start thinking about gut health. A healthy gut produces vital vitamins, regulates hormones, educates our immune system and helps us fight disease. Whereas an un-health gut is linked to obesity, diabetes, allergies and autoimmune conditions. If you want to either improve your own health or develop a new way of working contact Lisa directly.

Claire Bell Vehicle wrapping might sound like a maledominated industry but that doesn’t faze Claire Bell. Her husband Jason set up CJ Signs, a specialist vehicle wrapping company based in Killamarsh, Derbyshire, in 2004 and Claire became a partner in the business shortly afterwards, not long after giving birth to the couple’s second son. CJ Signs became a limited company in 2011 with Claire and Jason taking on 50/50 directorships. In the last couple of years Claire has helped the company exceed expectations, with its level of growth resulting in a move to new larger premises. “I’m the only female here amongst a team of men and that doesn’t bother me – or them – at all,” added Claire.

Jayne ElfleetRadford As the practice manager of the BUPA dental specialist centre on Eccelsall Road, Jayne brings a wealth of experience in the field of retail where she has worked for high profile womenswear retailers. women receive conflicting and inaccurate information – especially in the media. “I have a special interest in menopause care, having recognised that many women are unable to access the information and treatment they require. We can diagnose and manage early menopause and help women in the transition phase (perimenopause).” Caroline offers one-hour consultations to assess and devise a treatment plan based on your individual health requirements and risk factors using the very latest research and NICE guidelines. The clinic will review your care on a regular basis to help you navigate your menopausal journey – from experiencing the first symptoms often in the forties until you’re 60 and sometimes beyond. What is MediSculpt Therapy? G&M HEALTHCARE CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR WEIGHT LOSS GOALS. ediSculpt Therapy is a nonsurgical, very low calorie weight loss program which can combat obesity and some chronic medical conditions like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, high cholesterol, hypertension and sleep apnoea. Medisculpt Therapy comprises of three main components; the diet, which is based on high protein foods with low carbohydrate and low fat contents, and two body contouring treatments – LPG Endermologie and Vanquish MeTM or Exilis Elite machines. The body contouring treatment LPG Endermologie is used for skin tightening in order to prevent the development of loose and sagging skin during and after the rapid weight loss. The second body contouring machine is a radio frequency machine for body fat reduction. G&M Healthcare has both of these machines and the choice of which one to use depends on the treatment package and area of the body requiring treatment. The radio frequency machines result in a significant fat reduction in targeted areas like the tummy, thighs or arms. These treatments are carried out weekly by fully-trained therapists and last about 3040 minutes each. In total you need about 75-90 minutes per week for your treatments. Weight loss with MediSculpt Therapy is safe, efficient and rapid. The weight loss progress is constantly monitored by a qualified GP and fully trained therapists who check weight loss progress, blood pressure, body fat content, metabolic rates and do blood tests on a regular basis. With regard to the results, they know from experience that a female patient will typically lose one stone a month and a male patient will typically lose one to one and a half stones a month. MediSculpt Therapy consists of six phases, which deliver amazing, safe, efficient and sustainable weight loss.

M

During phase 1 of MediSculpt Therapy the diet comprises of five meals and one snack a day. Protein foods are filling, hence patients don’t Before feel hungry. To supplement the diet some fruit and vegetables are also allowed on the diet. G&M Healthcare also do metabolic tests to check your metabolic rates and also provide supplements to ensure you don’t lack in essential minerals like magnesium, potassium, sodium chloride, calcium and trace minerals. Once the phase 1 target is achieved after losing about 70 per cent of your target weight, patients are moved onto phase 2 where ‘normal foods’, like weighed amounts of chicken, meat, fish and diary like eggs, are introduced. Once 90 per cent of your target weight loss is achieved patients are weaned to measured amounts of normal eating on phase 3. Thereafter phases 4-6 are stabilisation phases to ensure that optimum weaning off from the diet is achieved without putting on back the weight you have lost. After the stabilisation phase there is a life-long maintenance programme where G&M Healthcare six weekly follow ups for review by a therapist who measures your weight and body fat composition. Follow up is then 3-6 monthly for one year or as required thereafter. The cost of the program depends on the package you choose. There are three price packages – basic, standard and deluxe. All consist of your consultation fee (£100) and blood test fee (£100) followed by the package fees. Supplement prices are £50/month but

After

vary depending on the package you choose. The basic package is £125/week for only food. The standard package is £250/week for food and body contouring treatments with LPG Endermologie and Vanquish or Exilis Elite. The deluxe package is £300/week and includes food, body contouring treatments, supplements, 4 weekly reviews and blood tests. Recent studies from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), published by G Thom et al in Glasgow in collaboration with the NHS in September this year and by Yiqoao Xin et al in May 2020, have shown that very low calorie diets can cause remission in people with early type 2 Diabetes Mellitus of less than six years since onset. The programme is now being rolled out on a bigger trial of 5,000 people in the UK. G&M Healthcare is offering a free informal consultation with their GP, so if you would like to learn more and have your weight and body fat composition checked, please call 0114 233 5000, text them on 07944 629727 or email g.m.healthcarereception@gmail.com www.sheffieldvibe.com 99

HEALTH & GOOD LIVING

Put your gut first HOW LOOKING AFTER MY GUT HEALTH CHANGED MY OVERALL HEALTH. fter 30 years of working in Occupational Health, I have learned something new… how critical our gut health is to our overall health… and to be honest, it’s transformed my health. I’m Catherine Darcy-Jones, a nurse by training and wellbeing is something I am passionate about I have always been fit, I exercise regularly, and I have a healthy diet. I am 51, and oh boy has the menopause hit me like a brick! Mood swings, sleep deprivation, unbearable hot flushes and my energy has just been zapped. I had tried supplements, but I was still looking for a natural solution that worked for me. I recently reconnected with an old colleague and she invited me to one of her talks on gut health. It was fascinating. I learnt that: • 100 trillion bacteria, viruses and fungi live in and on us • Most live in our guts, known as our gut microbiome and it weights up to 3-4 pounds (1.3-1.8 kg) • A healthy, nourished, and diverse gut microbiome is critical to our health. I also learnt that our modern, Western way of living, is slowly killing the health and diversity of our gut microbiome. That lack of diversity is now linked to: • Obesity • Diabetes • Inflammatory bowel disease • Allergies • Asthma • Autoimmune diseases. So back to my menopause symptoms. It turns out that oestrogen and progesterone levels affect hormone receptors in our guts, which in turn impact how our guts work and a drop in

hormone levels can potentially change our gut microbiome. To ease my menopause issues, I decided to give gut health a try and signed up for Synergy Worldwide’s 21day Gut Reset Programme. The programme has three phases; first you prepare the body, take one supplement, and reduce food/drink that is not beneficial for good microbes. In the second phase you purify your gut microbiome – the most intensive part – where two meals are replaced with shakes, supplements are packed with prebiotics, probiotics and essential nutrients, all of which are organic and specifically formulated for gut health. You add one healthy meal plan, and you are provided with a great range of delicious gut-friendly recipes. The third phase provides you with the tools to follow-on and continue the process of re-balancing your gut health. I was part of a private group on Facebook and supported throughout with daily messages. So, what did my gut reset do for me? • Sleep improved in the first week • Re-energised by day 12. • Hot flushes reduced – from around ten per day to just one per day. I have been overwhelmed with how much better I feel. I feel rested and have more energy. I cannot believe the

compliments that I’ve been getting on how I look. Best of all my hot flushes have reduced. Gut health does not just apply to women during menopause. If you have put on weight during lockdown, if you are diabetic or pre-diabetic and need to lose weight, if you are suffering with depression or low in mood, if you are suffering with bloating or bowel problems… or if you are looking to strengthen your immune system, improve your energy and just generally feel well, why don’t you start prioritising your gut health. You will reap the benefits. It was Lisa Allan who educated me on gut health. She regularly does free gut health talks via Zoom and regularly supports groups through the 21-day Gut Reset Programme. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain! Go on, get in touch with Lisa and put your gut first! To find our more, email lisa@healthopportunity.co.uk or scan the QR code below.

Fit for purpose DON’T BE A CHRISTMAS PUDDING THIS YEAR. THERE’S STILL TIME TO GET FITTER, LIVE HEALTHIER AND FEEL GREAT. WHILE OTHERS WAIT ON NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS, YOU COULD ALREADY BE BASKING IN YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS… WITH A LITTLE EXPERT HEALTH. f you’re serious about getting fit for Christmas, there are two important dates in the calendar. The first is 5 November. That’s when you build a bonfire – of all those books about miracle diets and other no-effort remedies. If they have any effect at all, it’s likely to be short-lived. And the prospect of a week on cabbage soup or equivalent, in our estimation at least, is a greater threat to the will to live than any form of physical torture yet devised. But it doesn’t have to be a choice like that. Just ask an international elite athlete. Take Mary Fleming for instance. She has represented Australia as part of the national orienteering team. For those of us unfamiliar with the sport, it involves navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Considerable speed. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, it’s rather like fast fell running while finding your way with a map. It is, to say the least, demanding. But having forsaken her native Melbourne for Sheffield, she has now turned her attention to getting us portly poms in shape. Her second business venture – she is already involved in sports equipment retailing – provides personal training under the umbrella of Peak Fitness.

Our guide to fitness clubs in Sheffield There are numerous gyms and health clubs in Sheffield, most of them offering personal training. Here’s a brief guide to some of the best-known. NUFFIELD HEALTH CLUB Napier Street Formerly known as Greens. Up there with the best, and this is reflected in the membership fee. Membership: £50 per month on a 12-month commitment. Joining fee: No Swimming Pool: Yes Other: Tennis courts and football pitch

So how would she respond to the challenged of getting Mr or Mrs Average fit for Christmas? Mary says it’s all about setting ‘smart goals’ – goals that are measurable, achievable, relevant and time-based. This is not just about weight loss, though many of her clients have exactly that in mind. The measurable element comes as part of setting an individual’s chosen target. So what are the possibilities open to those who want to shed the pounds? A healthy amount would be one to two pounds per week, and Mary prepares an exercise programme accordingly. “If we have someone who wants to lose more – say a stone – then the realistic length of time required would be seven to 14 weeks, which is readily achievable if the aim is to do this in time for Christmas – even one to two stones is within reach. “If a client came and said they wanted to lose four stones, then we would have to advise them that this is not a healthy goal in the available span of time. But perhaps by March it could be done.” As part of the fresh look at all matters relating to well-being, Mary creates a diet diary and recommends improvements, albeit gradual ones. “I would not recommend a complete overhaul of someone’s diet immediately. It’s a case of one or two changes each week, so the chances of success are far greater,” she says. The best motivating factor is when a client has a specific aim in mind – like being able to fit into a wedding dress in 110 www.sheffieldvibe.com

time for the day, or perhaps they’ve signed up for a 10k race. “It often comes down to a choice – either you find a motivator or you have to adjust your expectations.” One success story she is particularly proud of is that of a 54-year-old client who was a regular short distance runner, but wanted to improve her speed and distance capabilities without aggravating a niggling injury. At the end of a carefully-crafted exercise schedule, the client succeeded in her goal of running the London Marathon. Turning to the content of the training schedule, Mary sets a balance of roughly 80 per cent cardio-vascular development and 20 per cent strength and conditioning. The schedules are built around timed sessions based on activities like rowing machine work and running, both indoor or outdoor, or cross training and cycling. But how to ensure that all this effort is not wasted amid a junkfest of mince pies and turkey, and a torrent of Baileys and Malibu? Easy. We set the date for being fit by Christmas as 1 December, and then start work on the next goal for the post-festive season and beyond. This allows for a little ‘downtime’ during the Christmas season itself. Whatever your aim, it’s achievable and the best time to start is now.You can have a new outlook on life by the time you’re unwrapping the presents. Believe.

How to help your children financially and protect your investment GRAYSONS’ PRIVATE WEALTH TEAM IS WELL PLACED TO HELP. wo-thirds of parents are avoiding giving early inheritances to their children in case they lose it in a divorce. Research carried out by wealth managers, Handelsbanken, shows that 67 per cent of parents are unwilling to hand over any of their money to children early in case they get divorced and their son or daughter-in-law benefits. It also shows that 27 per cent of parents do not believe that their children’s marriages will last and 27 per cent say their children have already divorced or separated. Worried parents are now gifting only small amounts, or are giving

T

gifts directly to their grandchildren, cutting out their children altogether. With the wide belief that the coronavirus lockdown is the catalyst for a rise in the divorce rate, these worries are understandable. However, if you wish to help out your children financially, but want to ensure that their spouses or partners do not benefit, there are steps you can take to protect any investment you make.

Inheritance planning is vital Making a will and carrying out inheritance planning is vital to ensure

that you fully understand and make use of your inheritance tax (IHT) allowances and, should you wish to give gifts in your lifetime, that you do not fall foul of the rules. Graysons’ lifetime planning experts can help you to make a will and set up trusts in which your children’s spouses wouldn’t be named as potential beneficiaries and, therefore, wouldn’t normally inherit. Anne Rogers, head of the private client team says: “A trust could allow money to be passed out of your estate without attracting inheritance tax. It can also be used to buy property or make loans to beneficiaries. As trustees of any such

trust, you can exercise control over how and when funds are used and can ensure that it is for the benefit of your children or grandchildren only. You can name trustees to continue administration of the trust after your death. “It is vital that you keep your will up to date. For example, if you fear that one of your children is planning to divorce, you may want to change your will so that this child is not a beneficiary and their spouse cannot, therefore, benefit from your wealth if you die before they divorced.Your will can be changed back once your child is divorced.”

Gifts Giving smaller, specific gifts of money to your children or grandchildren could allow you to help them financially and, at the same time, reduce your estate for the purposes of IHT, but you need to ensure that those gifts comply with strict rules or the gifts could still attract IHT.

Buying property with your children If you decide to buy a house for your child or make a contribution to one, there are several things that you can do to protect your investment. • The property can be bought out of a trust that has been set up. • You can set up a declaration of trust with the child to whom you give/loan the money. This can state that when the house is sold, the amount of money you put into it will go back to your child – or to you if the money was a loan and not a gift. Your child and their spouse/civil partner or partner can also enter into such a declaration. A declaration of trust to protect the money of a third party (not the legal owner) needs the approval of a mortgage lender if there is one. • Buy the property with your child as tenants in common which means that you can specify the actual percentage of the property that you own so that when it is sold, you retain the same percentage. • Put a charge against the property (see below). • If your child is married or in a civil partnership, try to ensure that the property for which you have given/loaned money is owned as tenants in common and not joint tenants (where property automatically passes to the survivor)

The Graysons private wealth team (L-R): Anne Rogers, Bradie Pell and Caroline Murray

and that they have a will which specifies that their spouse/civil partner is not to inherit the house or any money that you gave them as a gift. If they do not have a will and are joint tenants, in the absence of any other agreement, such as those above, their spouse/civil partner will inherit the first £270,000 of your child’s estate, plus half of everything above that, in accordance with the rules of intestacy. Caroline Murray, head of the property team says: “In certain circumstances, we can put a charge on the property you are contributing to.This is a legal document (more watertight than a declaration of trust) that is registered against the property with the Land Registry. It is usually for a fixed amount or a percentage, with no interest accruing or payments to be made. The charge would be redeemed on a trigger event, such as the sale of the property. If there is already a mortgage on the property, the lender will need to consent to this charge.”

Prenups and cohabitation agreements Your investment could be protected if your child enters into certain agreements with their spouses/civil partners or partners, such as a prenuptial agreement or a cohabitation agreement. Whilst these arrangements are voluntary, you could decide to make the gift/loan only if one of these agreements is in place. Bradie Pell, head of the family team says: “If your child is getting married, a

prenuptial agreement can address the gift or loan that you have given and what is to happen to it should they separate. Whilst prenuptial agreements are not yet legally binding in the UK, and so this does not offer 100 per cent certainty that your money is protected, they are accepted more and more by courts as proof of a couple’s intentions. If the couple is entering into a civil partnership, they can have a preregistration agreement drawn up in the same way. “If your child is living with someone, but not married, they could enter into a cohabitation agreement setting out what will happen to the couple’s assets should they split up.This way, whatever amount you have given or loaned to your child can be protected. If a cohabitation agreement is properly drafted, it is a legal document that is enforceable by law.” Graysons’ private wealth team is well placed to help you with advice and assistance on many issues relating to wealth protection, including how best to help your children financially without risking your investment. IN BRIEF

Fundraising hit A mouthwatering mix of East meets West has raised more than £1,000 for St Luke’s Hospice. Sheffield’s oldest Indian restaurant, Ashoka, teamed up with city pizza experts Proove throughout August to deliver a very special taste experience. For that strictly limited period, Ashoka’s famous Taxi Driver curry was added to one of Proove’s acclaimed Italian pizza blends of smoked mozzarella, San Marzano tomatoes, fresh red onion and authentic Neapolitan pizza dough. The limited-edition pizza cost £12.50 and was on sale at Ashoka and both Proove’s Sheffield and Manchester restaurants. And a generous slice of the revenue generated by Taxi Driver Pizza sales amounted to £1,172.50 which went to St Luke’s as part of Proove’s ongoing community contribution scheme.

Night Strider 2020

Iconic Sheffield album sale supports St Luke’s Hospice Abbeydale Road cafe and bar Coles Corner is supporting St Luke’s Hospice with a special donation of an album by one of the city’s best loved musicians. The cafe and record store has donated a signed copy of singer songwriter Richard Hawley’s iconic vinyl album Coles Corner, which will now now be sold via the St Luke’s ebay store. “Coles Corner is one of Richard Hawley’s most popular albums and a signed copy is guaranteed to generate a lot of interest,” said St Luke’s Head of Fundraising Joasia Lesniak. “Richard himself has supported St Luke’s many times and we are sure he will be pleased that this album will be making a difference to the lives of our patients and their families.”

Lewis joins the Graywoods team

It’s usually a night of colour, fun, and fantastic fundraising for St Luke’s Hospice…but the 2020 Night Strider will have a new COVID-safe format for all the family to enjoy. 2020 would have marked Night Strider’s sixth anniversary but when the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, a new plan had to be developed - and Night Strider has gone virtual! The Night Strider virtual challenge – sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple – will see participants register free of charge to do their own fundraising event any time between between Saturday 3 October – the evening that Night Strider would have taken place – and Saturday 31 October. To find out more about Virtual Night Strider and how to get involved simply visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk

Sheffield business turnaround and insolvency practice Graywoods has welcomed a new face to the team. Lewis Barker, who is originally from Manchester, studied history at the University of Sheffield and then went on to gain a Master’s degree in Law. “We are delighted to welcome Lewis to the team,” said Graywoods partner Deborah Lockwood. “With his background in law, we know he will bring a new perspective to our case load. “As we continue to emerge from this extremely difficult period for all sectors of the economy, we know we have a team that can provide the best support in every area of turnaround and insolvency.”

Higher standards

It’s time to talk

The director of one of the north’s leading double glazing companies is calling for the industry and the government to become more actively involved in training the next generation. Yorkshire Windows is one of the region’s best known names in uPVC doors and windows, composite doors, bi-fold doors, conservatories, orangeries, garage doors and roofline products. Director Ian Chester says the company is experiencing a strong recovery, but he warns that this increased demand has highlighted an increasing industry skills shortage. Yorkshire Windows is part of CERTASS, the multi-award winning specialists in certification for the building industry. CERTASS is a UKAS approved certification scheme that checks individual contractors and companies competence against set standards. Ian believes, though, that the best training for future generations would start in the classroom. “There is an industry standard and CERTASS is doing very good work in getting recognition but we need to be doing much more if the industry is to improve its reputation for good work.”

South Yorkshire Youth Homelessness charity Roundabout wants to get families talking again in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. One of Roundabout’s most popular functions is its Mediation Service – part-funded by BBC Children in Need and Sheffield Council – which is aimed at helping families to resolve problems and reach agreements that could prevent the sort of domestic crisis that ends with a young person on the streets. Throughout the 2020 pandemic, many family dynamics have been strained, and already fragile relationships have been put under extra pressure without the usual distractions and social opportunities to ease tensions. In this challenging time, though, Roundabout has increased its capacity to offer help to more families through its Mediation Service. If you feel you or someone you know could benefit from Roundabout’s Mediation Service support then please do get in touch via roundabouthomeless.org

Diamonds are forever PA JEWELLERY EXPLAIN THE ENDURING APPEAL OF DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RINGS, AND WHY A SOLITAIRE WILL NEVER GO OUT OF FASHION. f you get engaged, you will probably choose a diamond ring to celebrate the occasion; it is regarded as the classic style and for most of us there is no alternative. This ‘tradition’ is only a recent invention however, and before the 20th century it would have been unusual to see an engagement ring featuring only diamonds. Rings have been given to mark a betrothal since at least the Middle Ages. The first record of a diamond engagement ring is in 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave Mary of Burgundy a gold band set with flat pieces of diamond that formed an ‘M’. Although this sparked a trend amongst the very wealthiest in Europe, diamonds were a rare and expensive gemstone, unavailable to most. By the 1800s engagement rings had become ornate pieces, combining coloured gemstones, small diamonds, enamel work and precious metals. A significant change occurred later in the century when the discovery of large diamond deposits in South Africa meant that diamonds were suddenly far more available than before: they were no longer the preserve of the very wealthy. Prices decreased as supply flowed into the market.

I

In the early decades of the 20th century economic circumstance stood in the way of this diamond revolution; two world wars and an economic crash meant people did not have money to spend on luxuries. In 1948 De Beers stepped in with their hugely successful advertising campaign that made a diamond ring seem indispensable when proposing. Their slogan, ‘A Diamond is Forever’, is still used today. The campaign allied diamond’s purity and durability to the idea that marriage is forever, promoted the idea that a diamond ring could be passed down through generations, and educated the public about the range of sizes and qualities available. It utilised the new concept of ‘celebrity’, with film stars photographed

dripping in diamonds. The campaign was probably one of the most successful of all time: it transformed the way the public thought about diamonds. Over the decades, fashions have changed, and trends have come and gone, influenced by celebrity engagements, changes in culture, and developments in cutting and setting. Changes in the way we shop mean there is now more choice available than ever before, and many couples like to have something a little different, with the addition of coloured gemstones, antique styling or an unusual setting. Throughout all this the round brilliant cut solitaire has maintained its popularity; its simplicity means it is perfect for everyday wear and never goes out of fashion, exemplifying the idea that a diamond is forever. A significant milestone DISCERNING CUSTOMERS APPRECIATE THE FIRST CLASS WORKMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO CREATING A DAVID J MARTIN KITCHEN. THAT THE BUSINESS HAS RECENTLY CELEBRATED 40 YEARS IS TESTAMENT TO ITS SUCCESS. ne of Sheffield’s most successful and long-standing businesses celebrated its 40th anniversary in December. David J. Martin has been creating stunning bespoke furniture, primarily for kitchens but also for bedrooms, studies and lounges, from the same business base on Springvale Road, Walkley since 1980. Forty years is a significant landmark for any business and a steady stream of satisfied customers have been won over by David’s obsession with doing every job to the highest possible standards. “I’m doing what I always wanted to do since I was at school,” says David, a carpenter by trade who studied for many years, starting with a City and Guilds in joinery and finishing up with a degree in his chosen subject. “I loved joinery and technical drawing and still get David in his workshop a lot of satisfaction from seeing a job through from start to finish.” Kitchens account for most of the work being done by David and his eight-strong team who are all highly trained and at the top of their game. Everything – and that does mean every single thing – is made from scratch with kitchens painstakingly designed to the last millimetre to suit the size and style of the home and meet the requirements of the customer. Every piece of wood is sanded in house, every colour is mixed and sprayed by the company’s own full time professional paint sprayer, and every sharp corner is rounded off by hand. “There’s no such thing as a typical David J Martin kitchen,” says David. “The fact that we make everything means the customer can have whatever they want. Everyone has a different view as to how a kitchen works, so a large part of my job is talking it through with them and finding out exactly what they would like. “We often find ourselves working in some very nice houses where the original kitchen was quite small, it was simply a place to prepare food in. So we are not just planning on where to put the new kitchen, we are also knocking down walls.” When this happens David J Martin can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work as well as building furniture. It generally takes three to four months from consultation to completion to finish a kitchen including six weeks to make

and three to five weeks to fit, depending on the amount of building work involved. David says: “Because we work as a team – plasterers, electricians, plumbers and fitters – everyone is lined up to come in and work as and when we need them. There is no delay and disruption for the customer is always kept to a minimum.” It’s at the design stage that David’s technical drawing skills come into their own as he prefers to show customers his own line drawings rather than using a CAD (computer aided design) machine. “Hand-drawn plans alongside photos of what we are starting from show a much truer depiction of what we are going to do and clients who are ordering a bespoke kitchen like it.” Looking to the future, David’s son Richard has worked for the company for 12 years and is now an integral part of the team, and with grandson Oliver the latest addition to the family, who’s to say this family business won’t still be going strong in another 40 years.
