Build and IMPROVE

Geoff Melvin can you help you realise your home’s potential.

hether you have grand plans for a bespoke new home, are thinking of that perfect kitchen extension or just a simple garage conversion – choosing the right professional to design your home can be a daunting experience. An architectural designer’s skills, insight and knowledge can make or break any project, so choosing the right person is one of the most important decisions you’ll make.

Architects and designers have a unique ability to consider both the big picture and minute details of building projects. Depending on your needs, they can help navigate planning laws and building and liaise with builders and craftsmen.

Crosspool-based Geoff Melvin is an architectural consultant and is perfectly placed should you be thinking about making some improvements to your home. As well as providing ideas for your project and architectural design drawings, he can help you negotiate any planning permissions and aid with building regulations too.

“I work with clients from construction to completion and try to establish what it a solution,” he said. “It’s about not just improving someone’s home but their lives too.”

Geoff has spent his career working for both national and regional housebuilders,

designing large developments for the likes of Gleesons, Bellway, Jones Homes and Ackroyd & Abbott. After setting himself up as a limited company in 1993, he still works for and maintains relationships with many of these builders but in recent years has found more time to work closer to home on smaller residential projects. These have usually materialised from word-ofmouth recommendations.

“In recent years, planning has become much more complicated on these larger jobs so have in turn become more drawn out, creating more time for me to do more of these smaller, bespoke projects,” Geoff added. “I can design and advise on oneoff houses, large extensions and smaller kitchen or utility extensions. But the important thing is to start the conversation.”

Geoff works with a company who help with the tendering process as well as a number of trusted builders. He has an extensive portfolio of completed projects, many of which are in the S10 and S11 areas.

Escape the CROWDS

Lesser known than the Cinque Terre but equally beautiful, Pete Thompson marvels at the northern Italian delights of Porto Venere.

he Ligurian Sea glistens under a clear blue sky as I admire a view of the colourful historic village of Porto Venere.

TI could not wish for a better vantage point to marvel at such a beautiful coastline across the calm turquoise water following a leisurely walk on Palmaria Island.

Nestled away in the Italian Riveira, near the border of Tuscany and Liguria, Porto Venere tends to be overlooked by the

nearby Cinque Terre.

I soon discovered they are missing out on a picturesque haven in a bay that was dubbed the ‘Gulf of Poets’ – due to the literary legends who drew inspiration from these shores.

Lord Byron, D.H. Lawrence, Percy Bysshe Shelley and George Sand were among the esteemed creative greats who found this stunning part of the world so alluring.

As I gaze out to where Lord Byron braved tempestuous waters to swim across the bay from Porto Venere to visit Shelley in the village of San Terenzo so many years ago, the welcome sight of a boat arriving at Palmaria Island captures my attention.

And before I know it, I am being treated like a nobleman after stepping on board for a tour around the bay with Associazione per il mare.

Prior to our voyage, sumptuous fresh oysters were served up along with mouthwatering mussels and pasta that had been cooked at the front of the vessel.

on a glorious day in an idyllic setting for lunch as we bobbed gently on the water –

lapping up the exquisite scenery and bright sunshine.

We were then treated to a cruise past the striking mix of brightly coloured houses in Porto Venere’s charming harbour, just of Saint Peter – which was transformed of Christianity and is a spectacular sight perched above the rocks by the sea.

Back on dry land, I meander through the narrow, winding cobbled backstreets, marvelling at ancient architectural wonders such as the Doria Castle – built around 1160 – and taking in jaw-dropping vistas in a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

And all this just a stone’s throw from the Grand Hotel Portovenere – which very much lived up to its name during my magical stay.

Originally a 17th-century convent, the marina and the old town and is just a short boat or train journey away from the Cinque Terre.

I could never tire of the captivating views from the balcony of my room, or the smiles of the welcoming hotel staff who worked so meticulously throughout my visit.

There is a lovely laid-back feel in the hotel’s Palmaria Restaurant, where I sampled moreish freshly-baked focaccia, scrumptious pumpkin gnocchi and luscious octopus dishes.

day by clocking up the miles on the nearby scenic coastal hiking trails of the Cinque Terre – which we reached by train, as the choppy sea prevented us from taking the boat.

picture-postcard villages - Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore – along a rugged coastline and you are certainly rewarded for stretching your legs.

I can be guilty of turning a walk into a

this adventure after starting out from Monterosso as I took in the splendour of sharp cliffs overlooking the crystal-clear sea, small coves and an array of yellow, pink, green and orange homes.

It was only right that we raised a glass walk and a trip to the Possa Winery in Riomaggiore ended our excursion on another high note.

Heydi Bonanini spoke with passion high on the hillside as he showed us where 11 generations of his family have farmed land on steep terrain, producing top class wines that have won awards at home and overseas.

We sampled some of the fruits of his labour in an atmosphere tasting room, whetting the appetite for further Ligurian delights back in Porto Venere.

And sure enough I was in for another treat at the 3 Torri restaurant, where the seafood special was a shrewd selection as I sampled the very best of the local cuisine.

Porto Venere has been dubbed the Cinque Terre’s ‘sixth town’, but with natural beauty including quiet coves such ‘as Byron’s Grotto’ you can see why the great poet retreated here to escape the crowds.

Farmyard FLAVOURS

Richard Abbey enjoys a barn-storming trip to Whirlow Hall Farm.

hirlow Hall Farm Trust has been one of the city’s shining lights over the last 45 years, providing alternative learning for those who struggle in mainstream education. But the charity is so much more and as a working farm is a popular visitor attraction, especially for those with younger children, who can explore and interact with the animals.

Three years ago, the trust increased their offering even further, converting the old horse stables into a brand-new café building, which opens Wednesday and Thursday 9am-3pm and Friday to Sunday 9am to 4pm.

And work hasn’t stopped there. Currently work is ongoing to open a takeaway trailer to complement the café and there are further plans to extend the playground and introduce more animals onto the farm. The Barn is also available for private hire and is perfect for your celebrations, including weddings, business meetings or gettogethers.

The Barn is a hive of activity and is a bright, airy space with orange tables and mis-matched wooden chairs, many of which look like they’ve been reclaimed from schools. Huge windows overlook a small terrace and the children’s playground.

There’s breakfast and brunch menus, both of which operate all day until 2.30pm, as well as deli items such as soups, salads, quiches, pastries, cakes and more.

One big change that I noticed since our last visit is that The Barn now operates by table service, rather than cafeteria style, so we took our table by the window and looked over the menus.

My dad was drawn to The Barn Breakfast (£14.50) from the breakfast half of the menu and was seriously impressed with Whirlow’s take on the ‘full English’, which included sausage, bacon, hash browns, grilled tomato, button mushrooms, beans, fried egg and buttered sourdough bread.

If it wasn’t for the fact that my Whirlow Roast Pork Sarnie (£11.50) – from the

brunch half of the menu – was equally good, I would have had serious food envy. The impressive sandwich was stuffed with and apple sauce on a soft white breadcake with homemade gravy. Delicious.

Much of the meat used in The Barn comes from the on-site butcher, located in the adjacent farm shop, which in turn uses meat from the farm or other local suppliers.

We ordered cans of San Pellegrino (£2.50) – lemon and orange – to complement our lunches but not quite sated of cake (lemon drizzle and banana bread) as well as cups of coffee - Americano (£3)

The Barn is also fully licensed and a range of wines and beers are also available.

Special PLACE

Richard Abbey sees the Peacock at Rowsley in a whole new light.

y previous visits to the Peacock at Rowsley have usually been limited to the winter months. You arrive in the dark, leave in the dark and perhaps don’t get to really appreciate the splendour of the hotel, which dates back to the 1600s and is part of the Haddon Estate, owned by Lord and Lady Edward Manners who live at nearby Haddon Hall. quality seasonal ingredients, some of which are taken from the estate.

Canapes of parmesan sable and pig’s head croquette duly arrived, which were both delicious and well complemented by the sweet and summery white wine.

From there we moved to the dining room (there are two) for the main part of our meal. Décor is very country house traditional and adds a touch of grandeur to any occasion.

We started with warm black treacle and white sourdough bread before our starters arrived, bring with them aromas of the sea as well as a hint of smokiness. Hand dive Orkney scallop had been cooked perfectly, sliced into three, and served with cucumber, kohlrabi and lime. A great introduction. My striped pork and smoked eel ravioli was presented beautifully with sweetcorn and buttermilk velouté and lovage.

My wife enjoyed further seafood

But I’d been looking forward

Nonnas was lying in wait for me.

It’s been pretty much the place to be seen for excellent service and high-quality knows Nonnas.

I am having my kitchen renovated at home, so dust is everywhere and I’m in constant dialogue with my builder and learning all the lingo... ‘Nib, RSJ, Accro and gobbo’ to name a few. So to keep him sweet, and hopefully his price low (as the extras are getting out of hand!), I decided to take him out for a meal and where else to impress him but Nonnas.

The bar was busy for a Monday, but we managed to get a famous window seat where we ordered two pints of crisp cold Peroni. The hustle and bustle of young couples, families and friends generated a great atmosphere.

We were shown to our table and presented with leather-bound menus and an

impressive wine list to match, with choices

a bottle rising up to price on request for the serious big hitters. After much deliberation I settled on a Valpolicella Superiore at £59, which was excellent – a very smooth light red.

After living on takeaways, beans on toast and eating off my lap for weeks I was ready for a proper meal. The choice is vast including Italian classics: risotto, pasta, gnocchi and bruschetta.

I opted for the Burrata con acciughe

oil. It was simple but in typical Italian style the emphasis is on the quality of the ingredients, and this didn’t disappoint.

My builder friend went for Polpo marinato

which was eaten at breakneck speed and described as “reyt nice”. So far so good.

For the main event I went for Cotolette d’agnello summer greens and a red wine sauce for us heathens. The lamb was perfectly cooked

pink inside. Mr Builder ordered, take a guess… ribeye steak with pesto, pine nuts and parmesan crisp (£35) which again was perfectly cooked and presented well. Now for dessert. I wanted my favourite Tiramisu (£8.95) but Mr Builder chose it so I went for Affrogato al Frangelico: ice

liquour (£8.95) , all mixed together by yours truly at the table. It rounded off an excellent Monday night.

isn’t cheap but neither is a new kitchen so hopefully Mr Builder will remember this when he invoices me. The wine we enjoyed was expensive and our choices were from the high-end of the menu. There are plenty of other options which could have made the experience cheaper, but this is Nonnas and I was out to enjoy myself, so why not?

Fit for a PRINCE

Chiara Bruno samples the delights of this Baslow favourite.

trip out to Baslow is not to be completed without calling into the Prince of Wales; a charming pub and restaurant in the heart of the village with numerous awards to its name. Most notably, it has recently received a prestigious second Rosette by the AA Hotel and Hospitality Services and crowned Pub of the Year at the Peak District Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Awards.

Our visit began by heading straight up to the elegantly decorated restaurant area, although we could have opted to begin

many diners do. Our table looked out onto a picturesque view of the Peak District, providing a glorious backdrop as the sun began to set.

My partner and I both decided on a glass of rich red wine (a Nero D’Avola, £10.95 for 250ml, and an Argentinian Malbec, £9.95 for 250ml), which made for the perfect accompaniment to our starters. I began the evening with Guinness-braised

pork cheek (£10.50). The malty sweetness of the pork contrasted beautifully with the tangy homemade sauerkraut it was delicately placed upon. My partner chose lamb belly (£10.95) which was crisped to perfection and served with torched padrón peppers and lamb fat chimichurri for that

For mains, we continued with the meat theme choosing Derbyshire lamb rump (£27) and an 8oz sirloin steak (£29), which was also raised and nurtured locally. The tender lamb was presented on a bed of Lebanese tabbouleh and accompanied by buttered greens and a delicately spiced carrot puree. The contrast in textures was exactly what my palate was craving. Exquisite.

My partner’s steak was expertly charred on the outside and medium rare in the middle which melted in the mouth. It was served with deliciously crisp hand-cut chips, foraged mushrooms and salad. He also added a blue cheese sauce for £3.50 for that extra bit of decadence; a real step

above the pub classic. If you’re a steak fan, it’s worth noting that the Prince of Wales hosts a steak night every Wednesday starting from £20.

Finally, to satisfy our sweet tooth, we had to peek at the dessert menu. The slice of sticky toffee pudding (£8.50) was everything you could want from the timeless dish; sticky, sweet and utterly irresistible. My choice of the espresso affogato (£6.95) perked me up in time for the journey home.

If you would like to treat yourself to

service and gorgeously presented dishes with fantastic attention to detail, then don’t hesitate to visit the Prince of Wales in Baslow. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.

A Calling all FOOD LOVERS...

The Dunston Hall Estate continues to evolve. Joining the garden centre, bistro and wedding and events venue is a brand new food hall and deli.

lready home to a wedding and bespoke events venue, garden centre and award-winning bistro, you wonder how Dunston Hall Estate could improve their offering even further. The charming country venue, which sits on the edge of the Peak District but is

is already hugely popular, whether you’re wanting to make some garden improvements, enjoy tea and cake and have a celebration to plan.

But there’s more.

Owners David and Lynsey Harrison are not ones for standing still and have recently opened a brand-new courtyard and food hall and deli, which offers a unique and unparalleled experience for all food lovers. Sited to the rear of the garden centre, this stunning space stocks all manner of

delights, many of which are from local suppliers and artisan producers.

There’s a huge focus on quality, as explained by the couple: “Every product on our shelves is carefully chosen to ensure premium quality and prime pedigree,” they said. “From vegetables and fruit to meats,

antipasti, salads, patisserie, and cakes –everything is of the highest quality. We also stock a selection of beers, wines, chutneys, pickles, and jams.”

The fresh counter includes homemade pies, sausage rolls and sweet treats, all lovingly prepared by a team of chefs in the bespoke kitchens upstairs. Led by awardwinning chef and baker Steve Carroll, the culinary team ensures that all food is natural, healthy, and of prime quality.

meals as well as sandwiches, light bites, lunches, pastas, breakfasts, afternoon teas, street foods, and themed specials, all of which can be enjoyed outside within the stunning grounds or at home.

Dunston Hall Estate recently purchased the deer park adjacent to the property and have installed a series of footpaths, which you are free to explore. A shepherds hut, located just outside the food hall and deli, is set to be converted to serve hot and cold drinks and snacks and will have covered seating.

The food hall and deli is open Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 5.30pm and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

gardening supplies and gifts, which covers every season, basically everything you could wish for so you can enjoy your garden and make it a special place.

The garden centre actively supports local businesses and suppliers and, where possible, sells locally produced goods.

The addition of the food hall and deli has allowed the garden centre to extend garden furniture as well as larger and more varieties of plants.

Located just inside the garden centre, is the popular Bistro, which continues to prove extremely popular with its choice of hot and cold drinks, snacks, light bites

as well as something more substantial, including very good Sunday lunches. There’s a new covered outdoor seating area, which is the perfect spot to watch your children while they explore the adventure playground.

At the centre of the Dunston Hall Estate is the hall itself, which was refurbished in 2021 with the intention of creating the most magical wedding and events venue.

Last year, David and Lynsey Harrison added a further function room – The Stables – to their celebratory offering. This renovated space can accommodate between 80-120 people and is completely selfcontained with its own bar and bathrooms as well as having access to a charming walled garden.

The Stables is complemented by the Garden Room, which is fully licenced for civil ceremonies, as well as the hall’s Dining Room, which is suitable for smaller celebrations of up to 40 people.

Dunston Hall is hired on an exclusive basis – from 12pm to 12pm the following day – meaning you get sole use of the hall and grounds for the duration of your stay. There are ten luxury bedrooms, which can sleep up to 23 people, including a stunning honeymoon suite with four-poster bed, dressing room, huge bathroom and hall.

“We’re a blank canvas for you to create your own special day,” said operations director, Mark Lancashire.

FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE

Functional medicine is a personalised and integrative approach to healthcare which involves understanding the prevention, management and root causes of complex chronic diseases. The ultimate goal is to heal disease and promote a healthy life. A healthy life is not defifined as simply an absence of disease, but rather a positive vitality filled with energy, joy, gratitude and balance. The Functional Medicine model evolved from the insights and perspectives of a group of influential scientific leaders who realised the importance of a personalised approach to disease causes based on the evolving research in nutritional science, genomics, and epigenetics.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Functional medicine gives Dr Hula the clinical decision-making tools they need to navigate the landscape of illness by exploring all relevant mechanisms. Your personal treatment plan is backed by scientific research. Part of this research involves selecting the most appropriate tests to get the best possible results relevant to you.

Bespoke kitchens lovingly made in our own factory where service, quality and aesthetic are never compromised

“The service we received from DKD was exceptional. Mary designed our kitchen-diner knock through and she was so patient when we tried various different designs. That said her experience showed as we reverted back to one of her originals. As the work started Lauren took over and I can honestly say I have never met someone who works harder to please. Nothing is too much trouble and she provided the best customer service I have ever had.

Mount Renovations completed the building works and the guys on site were tidy, respectful and frankly fun to have around. Even though the build was completed a couple of month ago they recently returned to sort a couple of snags. Sarah in the office runs a tight ship (I’ve seen the electronic planner) and there was always someone on site working on the renovation.

Now the kitchen itself is perfect and nothing was too much trouble for the kitchen fitter Julian. The units are high quality and there is nothing I would change in terms of design/ layout, we just need to add all the finishing touches. We now spend so much time in our beautiful kitchen and I’ve even got the kids baking and washing up. A win all round.

Finally, the entire work wasn’t without a few complications, but they were minor and addressed immediately. The sign of a good quality company and I am so pleased we went with DKD (trust me we did our research of the alternatives). Thanks so much to everyone involved.”

Take the first step in creating your dream kitchen by calling into our spectacular designer kitchen showroom, or telephone us to book one of our designers for a free survey. They will then add life and inspiration to your ideas by creating a 3D visual walkthrough, assisting you in choosing colours, style and layout.
