elcome to the September edition of Westside. This month we’ll be taking a closer look at two of our most popular areas – Ecclesall Road and Oakbrook Road. Take a stroll along these well-trodden thoroughfares – and beyond – and you’ll find much more than shops, bars, restaurants and small independent businesses. From snuff mills to bears pits, there’s plenty to discover. Elsewhere we look ahead to the St Leger Festival, which is set to be a wholly different affair. There’s speculation that some spectators could be allowed inside the racecourse but if not, why not host your own themed party at home? We’ve got some expert advice and also found someone who’s done it all before. Eating out is back on the agenda and we also look at up to date fashion, beauty and stylish additions for the home and garden. We indulge ourselves with some luxury chocolates, which would make the perfect gift if you’re getting married, which will probably be next year – there are some great local businesses on hand to give you advice. Enjoy the rest of your summer and we’ll see you next month.

Meet the team (L-R): Kate Brown, Matthew Staves, Amy Staves, Gail Green
he suburbs of Dore and Totley are some of the most sought after areas in the city and with good reason. With great schools, amenities and frequent transport links to the centre, not to mention its close proximity to the Peak District, property in the S17 postcode comes with a premium pricetag. Opening at the heart of this corner of south-west Sheffield, and perfectly placed to advise you on all aspects of property, is Staves Estate Agents. The new Dore and Totley office, at the bottom of Bushey Wood Road next to Lush Bathrooms, opens on Saturday 29 August.

Staves is a well established independently owned and family-run estate agency with existing offices in Woodseats, Gleadless and Dronfield. They pride themselves on their local knowledge, something that won’t go amiss at the new branch. Managing director of Staves Estate Agents, Matthew Staves, who has 24 years’ experience in the industry, grew up in the Dore and Totley area and now takes his children to the same schools he once attended. “Strategically, this is a good location for us and complements our other branches,” he said. “We’d been in
conversation about this property for almost three years so to finally see it open its doors will be hugely satisfying. This is a great place to live and there’s a huge demand for property here. “We pride ourselves on our local knowledge along with our hands-on proactive approach towards selling and letting property, which we feel gives us a competitive edge over our competitors. Our passion and determination is matched only by our investment to leave no stone unturned with the extensive marketing and promotion of our properties.” Staves’ local knowledge is reinforced

with the appointment of Kate Brown as office manager at the new branch. Kate also lives locally, brings a wealth of experience and offers great insight into the local property market. Kate can’t wait to get started and work alongside Matthew along with Matthew’s wife and fellow director Amy Staves and sales negotiator Gail Green. Supporting the local community is hugely important to Staves too and they use independent, local suppliers wherever they can, whether that’s for their brochures, photography or IT systems. Indeed they have used local tradespeople for the shopfitting and are using neighbouring Seasons café as caterers for the opening.
Despite the Covid pandemic, the housing market is enjoying something of a ‘mini-boom’ and momentum is continuing to grow. “During the last few months, I think a lot of people have reassessed what’s important to them,” said Matthew. “Coupled with the fact that the Chancellor has put stamp duty on hold until 31 March 2021, moving house has become a much more attractive – and affordable – proposition. “Since coming out of lockdown we have been phenomenally busy, the demand is definitely there. It’s a great time to move.” The new office, just off Abbeydale Road South and close to Tesco Express,
will be open six days a week and there are three free parking spaces outside, which means dropping in has never been easier. Staves is a full service estate agency offering sales, lettings and mortgage advice. “I think one positive thing to come out of the Covid crisis has been a bigger focus on supporting independent businesses,” concludes Matthew. “At the heart of your community, we’re ready to support you in any property purchase, sale or let. Come in and say hello.” Staves Estate Agents 2A Bushey Wood Road, Sheffield, S17 Tel: 0114 395 0573 www.stavesestageagents.co.uk

All under one roof FLINT CONSTRUCTION SERVICES LTD CAN CARRY OUT YOUR COMPLETE HOME IMPROVEMENT, FROM START TO FINISH. ith time on your hands, the mind can start to wander. And with an abnormal amount of time spent at home, these thoughts can quickly turn to improvement. Do you extend upwards, outwards, redesign your current internal living space, would you like a new kitchen or bathroom or a new driveway? The choices are endless and, significantly, they’ll all add value to your home and give you so much enjoyment as we find ourselves spending more time at home. Once you’ve made your decision, it’s important to choose a builder who will make the experience as stress-free as possible; that’s where Flint Construction Services Ltd come in.The construction and renovation specialists bring over 35 years’ experience in the industry, providing a comprehensive service that takes you from architectural designs to completion. “We can provide professional architect services, dig out and install footings, construct the new outer shell and get it water-tight with a new flat or apex roof,” said Business Development Director Ian Jarvis. “We can then supply and fit elegant skylights to the roof, either with or without opening windows; the latter can be remote opening if required. Bi-fold doors bring your outdoor living space into your home creating light and the feeling of space and we can complete the interior of the property with electrical fixing, plumbing, space planning and high quality kitchen and bathroom design and installation. “If you’re thinking of renovating your outdoor space, we can also lay an Indian stone patio, modern block paving and finish off your garden with retaining or boundary garden walls with fantastic lighting to entertain family and friends in the evening.” Recent projects include Goxhill Barn. Flint Construction extended to the side of this property to create a huge living space complete with a log burner, the focal point the client had specified. A vaulted ceiling with Velux windows and large floor-to-ceiling windows and French doors made it a very light and inviting space with views out onto the garden.

The recent rear extension at Crimicar Lane with Indian stone patio
Closer to home, Flint Construction has undertaken extension and exterior work at a property on Crimicar Lane, which has proved to be a real labour of love for the owner. With a brief to create a modern, open-plan living space, Flint Construction created a single-storey extension to the rear of the property with a living flat roof complemented by two large skylights. Large bi-fold doors allow the large garden space to flow into the home. Inside, the property was opened up by removing supporting walls and adding structural steel supports. “The whole process was easy, from talking with them about ideas to the attention to detail in the finishing touches; there was good communication and the hitches and changes (which are inevitable in any building work) were all
sorted out quickly,” said the happy owner of the Crimicar Lane property. “The work was done to a very high standard – each person in the team is obviously skilled but also very friendly, and we were impressed with their work rate, politeness and enthusiasm. It was actually pretty sad when they left as they felt like part of the family! “There was a very good attention to the finish quality – and time was taken to achieve this. The team were tidy and respectful of our house too.” From custom house builds to bespoke extensions and driveways, Flint Construction offer a complete home improvement solution, managing the project from beginning to end. Brave the shave CROSSPOOL CARE HOME CHEF LOSES HER LOCKS FOR CHARITY. chef from a Crosspool care home had all her hair shaved and donated over £700 for a cancer charity. Tina Carrick, who works at The Porterbrook, a residential, dementia and respite care home, decided to brave the shave in order to raise money for the Weston Park Cancer Charity whose normal fundraising activities have been disrupted by the coronavirus outbreak. The 58-year-old has worked at the 44bed home in Tapton Crescent Road, which includes a magnificent balcony over its entrance, a piano bar, a library and even a home cinema, for three years. Tina had her locks removed at The Porterbrook’s hair salon and raised a total of £738 for Weston Park Cancer Charity which helps and supports people of all ages that have developed cancer. Tina said: “I decided to have my head shaved as due to Covid-19, many charities have been hit hard and not been able to complete their normal fundraising activities. “I chose Weston Park Cancer Charity as sadly most families are affected by cancer at some time in their lives. I’ve had experience of this with both of my parents so I wanted to do something to help raise money for the charity. I’m

very pleased to have raised over £700.” The Porterbrook care home manager Sheilagh Sweeney, who has more than 30 years of experience of working in care homes and social care, said: “We are so proud of Tina and her willingness to ‘brave the shave’. She has raised over £700 which is just incredible and a fantastic donation to Weston Park Cancer Charity who carry out such fantastic work for those people suffering with cancer.” The Porterbrook closed its doors to non-essential visitors in mid-March in order to create a ‘cocooning environment’ for those in its care after the coronavirus outbreak. The home is working on ways that residents can be reunited with their loved ones following the Government’s announcement last month that it would publish new guidance. Visits are allowed to resume in care homes once local authorities and local public health directors say it is safe. The guidance said residents will be limited to seeing the same one visitor where possible. Block party BRING BAUHAUS DESIGN – AND BALANCE – INTO YOUR HOME. Bauhaus originated as a German school of arts in the early part of the 20th century. Founded by Walter Gropius, the school eventually morphed into its own modern art movement characterised by its unique approach to architecture and design. Today, Bauhaus is renowned for both its unique aesthetic that inventively combines the fine arts with arts and crafts as well as its enduring influence on modern and contemporary art. Architecturally, it is characterised by harmoniously balanced geometric shapes and an emphasis on function. Bauhaus, and its principles, has now made its way into the interior world with geometric shapes, block designs and pops of colour appearing in our homes.

Stop working, start enjoying! TURN YOUR GARDEN INTO A LOW MAINTENANCE SPACE. ardens have been a blessing over the last few months, providing a welcome respite from the restrictions of lockdown. And let’s be honest, the weather’s not been too bad, meaning we’ve been able to relax and enjoy our outdoor spaces, and maybe even have a barbecue or two. A well-kept lawn and a decent decked seating area are the perfect combination for any garden space – but what about all that maintenance? Mowing and watering the lawn, sanding and painting the decking… the list of jobs soon adds up. Today’s busy working people don’t want to spend their leisure time maintaining their garden, they would
G
32 www.sheffieldvibe.com
rather enjoy relaxing in it. After a busy working day, the last thing anyone wants to do, is come home and get the lawnmower out or deal with the ongoing maintenance of an old tired wooden deck. The same issues are also faced by retired and elderly people, who may also find the constant upkeep difficult. Outdoor Living Spaces UK is here to make things easier for you, meaning you’ve got more time to relax and enjoy your garden. They supply and install a comprehensive range of top quality composite decking and artificial grass, which provides a very low maintenance and sometimes no maintenance option. Composite decking comes in a range
of colours, is hard-wearing and doesn’t need staining, sealing or sanding. In many cases, once the old, sometimes rotten or damaged decking boards have been taken up, surprisingly the frame and posts beneath are in good condition and at most require a few additional joists fitting to re-enforce it. Therefore it is only the boards that need replacing with composite ones, giving the appearance of a brand new modern deck, perfect for relaxing or entertaining. When fitting artificial grass, once the area has been prepared with type 1 hardcore and a pressure-injected treated timber frame, a weed protective membrane is laid and then a grit sand base. The top quality 40mm pile grass is then secured to the frame, which creates a beautiful new lawn with no further maintenance. Outdoor Living Spaces UK is a familyrun business that specialises in creating beautiful outdoor living spaces, especially composite decking and artificial grass. They cover the whole of Sheffield, Chesterfield and the surrounding areas. Call 0114 400 0230 or 01246 792015 to find out more.

Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management "A complete re-design - with amazing results" highly-professional team. All the team were kind and polite - especially with our two young boys, Harry and Thomas. The end result speaks for itself. We now have a light and airy kitchen with two sky lanterns with LEDs. Everything is perfect. There's an Airuno induction hob with a centrally-positioned integrated extraction unit, a composite undermounted sink, a combi microwave oven, a warming drawer, two dual-cook-flex Samsung ovens, a boiling water tap, LED spotlights, a quartz worktop, Polyflor Camero flooring and an island kitchen with considerable storage. A whole new central heating system has also been installed throughout the house. Dan went above and beyond to make sure we had what we needed - even providing us with the showroom oven, as we were not able to get hold of the ordered appliances due to lockdown. A special mention to the builders too, who allowed the boys and myself to lay a brick during the build, making it a very personal and enjoyable build experience. A magnificent team effort with perfect results!" 360 CHATSWORTH ROAD, CHESTERFIELD S40 2BY TELEPHONE 01246 200678 MOBILE 07737 984649. www.DaveStoneDesign.com Dan@DaveStoneDesign.com Find us on Facebook & Instagram

Classroom calling ALL SCHOOLS ARE SET TO RE-OPEN THEIR DOORS IN SEPTEMBER. WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT TO FIND? WE TRY TO ANSWER SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS. eturning to school in September is going to be a step into the unknown for many children and parents. For some, they won’t have set foot in a classroom for almost six months. It’s hard enough going back after the sixweek holidays, imagine what that will be like after six months? And all on the back of the Covid-19 pandemic… I have two primary school-age children whom, like the majority of the country, stopped attending at the end of March once lockdown measures were enforced. With two parents at home, homeschooling became the norm for the foreseeable future – we had timetables, lessons, games, quizzes, PE with Joe Wicks… namely anything to keep them busy and stimulated. Work was set by their school via Google Classroom and they had regular Zoom meetings to interact with their fellow classmates and teachers. It was different but they seemed to take it all in their stride. Come the end of May there was talk of returning to school before the summer, which raised a huge number of questions, mainly is it safe and how will it work? Of course, not all children did return but for those that did – including my children – it proved, in their case, to be a hugely rewarding and beneficial experience.
R
I have to give huge praise to the staff at my children’s school who created a safe and welcoming environment for all returning children. All classes were split into two, creating individual bubbles, and they attended two days each week from the end of June. Staggered start and finish times, oneway systems and consistent hand washing became their new norm. They loved seeing their friends and teachers and just those few days gave them an insight into what to expect come September. The government are insisting that all children return to education as it is vital for their education and for their wellbeing, as they state: “Time out of school is detrimental for children’s cognitive and academic development, particularly for disadvantaged children. This impact can affect both current levels of learning and children’s future ability to learn, and therefore we need to ensure all pupils can return to school sooner rather than later.

EDUCATION
“We are, therefore, asking schools to prepare to welcome all children back this autumn. While coronavirus (COVID-19) remains in the community, this means making judgments at a school level about how to balance and minimise any risks from coronavirus with providing a full educational experience for children and young people.” Schools, colleges and universities will have all been risk assessed in preparation for re-opening fully and government guidelines insist that the following measures are adhered to: • a requirement that people who are ill stay at home • robust hand and respiratory hygiene • enhanced cleaning arrangements • active engagement with NHS Test and Trace • formal consideration of how to reduce contacts and maximise distancing between those in school wherever possible and minimise potential for contamination so far as is reasonably practicable. How contacts are reduced will depend on the school’s circumstances and will (as much as possible) include grouping children together, avoiding contact between groups, arranging classrooms with forward-facing desks and staff maintaining distance from pupils and other staff as much as possible. This is a step into the unknown for education establishments and will be a learning experience for pupils, staff and parents alike. Jeff Smith, the new Collegiate Principal at Queen Ethelburga’s is well aware of the challenge ahead. “The challenges facing schools across the UK in preparing for full reopening in September – as we’ve heard said many times already – are unprecedented,” he said. “We have issued guidance to our students and parents on the measures we are taking to keep the campus as safe as possible, whilst maintaining the welcoming and happy atmosphere that they know and love.” Whether primary or secondary, September will see class sizes to return to capacity the main difference being that primary schools will have class bubbles, maintaining the same teacher for all lessons, whilst secondary pupils will be in year bubbles, meaning they will remain in the same class groups but can have different teachers for different subjects. Of course there are many more questions. Here’s just a few frequently asked ones about the return: Are the teachers going to re-teach work set through lockdown?
This will vary from school to school and indeed between subjects. Ultimately, especially at secondary, there is pressure to ensure all the specification is covered so it is likely not to include a complete re-teach but a recap with content embedded in new topics where it lends itself to an easy link. What are schools going to do to keep students and staff as safe as possible?
More hand-washing will be introduced to a ‘new normal’ routine. Staggered lunch times and break times will be used with zoning of students as well as staggered start and end times to the school day. Students will all face forward and staff will remain, wherever possible, 2m apart from students. It is likely that staff will also have different lunchtimes which will decrease numbers in shared areas at any one time.
What happens if a student or staff member tests positive in the bubble?
Current guidelines from Public Health England (PHE) mean that it will be handled on a local level. The action can vary but could involve small groups of staff and students selfisolating for up to 14 days. The number of staff and students would depend on the bubble size and exposure. This could be increased if the number of positive cases increases and mobile testing units could be deployed to increase the number of tests. The guidelines change frequently so up to date information would be sought by the school. What happens to students and staff if they are selfisolating?
If students are well and self-isolating, they will be expected to access home learning that will be provided by the school. If staff are well and self-isolating, they will be expected to provide relevant resources for home learning. What happens if a student falls ill at school?
If a student becomes unwell at school, they will be asked to isolate if any symptoms match the main Covid-19 symptoms. Staff in these situations will be wearing PPE. Its likely that the school will contact parent/carer for immediate collection of the student. Individual schools will be able to provide up to date information. Alternatively, visit www.gov.uk for the latest guidelines. www.sheffieldvibe.com 55

ECCLESALL & OAKBROOK ROAD
Endcliffe Park forms part of the Sheffield Round Walk
More to discover DIVERT JUST A LITTLE FROM THE WELL-TRODDEN ROUTE AND YOU WILL BE WELLREWARDED, WRITES MARTIN EDWARDS. here are people who would have you believe that civilisation ceases at the end of Ecclesall Road. They’re right of course if by civilised you mean a road unparalleled in the north for its sheer variety of shopping, eating and drinking. Other cities – yes I mean you Leeds – pale by comparison. Eccy Road is a one-off. A real, vibrant nightlife and retail hub that’s also a ‘real’ place where people actually live. And there’s much more besides. Running parallel to ‘The Golden Mile’, as it’s often called, is Sheffield’s General

Cemetery, which was the principal burial ground during Victorian times. Today, it is Grade II-listed, thanks to the English Heritage National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, and is also a local nature reserve. City dignitaries including George Bassett (founder of Liquorice Allsorts), Mark Frith (steel manufacturer and Master Cutler) and William Flockton (architect) are interred there. Heading further up the road there’s the Sharrow Mills, once home Wilsons of Sharrow, specialists in snuff production. Much of the original building remains as does the water wheel. Across the road from the ‘snuff mill’ is the Botanical Gardens with those wonderful glass pavilions, fountains and bear pit. Robert Marnock and Joseph Paxton, amongst others, helped to design the gardens, which first opened in 1836. Today, it attracts a cross-section of visitors for walks, picnics and, if you’ve got little ones, a bear hunt. Ecclesall Road continues past Hunter’s Bar roundabout, which is so famous it was name-checked in an Arctic Monkeys song. But you’ll be doing the area a disservice if you don’t stop off in Endcliffe Park, which, as the huge statue at its entrance testifies, was opened in 1887 to commemorate the jubilee of Queen Victoria. The park is often the starting point for the 15-mile Sheffield Round Walk. If you don’t fancy completing the whole loop, the walk up through the park, into Bingham Park

and Whitely Woods, past the Shepherd’s Wheel and up towards Forge Dam and the Mayfield Valley is a wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon. If you’re up this end of town, as the local’s might say, you’re mightily close to another of south-west Sheffield’s most charming thoroughfares. Divert just a little from the well-trodden route and you will be well-rewarded. By contrast with its famous sister, Oakbrook Road doesn’t go in for public displays of hauteur. And yet it’s Ecclesall Road in microcosm. It can claim to be home, for instance, to what is arguably one of the best restaurants in Sheffield and far beyond its boundaries. There’s also an Italian restaurant, the latest incarnation of a building that has been host to many different eating places in its time. Hands up who remembers The Stirrings? If you want your inner energy to be channelled in order to strike a balance with nature, there’s a Feng Shui consultant here. If the inner energy wavers for any reason I suppose you could always buy a battery from the convenience store up the road. There’s an unmissable interiors shop that has graced the road for more years than Westside has been going. And that’s a good few years. An equally well-established jeweller brings the bling to Oakbrook Road and you will come across not
one, but two places to stop for a cuppa and a bite One’s a traditional tea room and the other an Italian pavement café. In fact there’s just about nothing you could fail to find… a duo each of estate agents and hairdressers, beauty salon and if you’re fancying a new kitchen to go with the spectacular new interior you’ve just decided upon, then you merely have to cross the road. All this for a road whose only claim to wider fame was when it appeared in the television series Threads back in the eighties. That was the one which told a cheerful tale about the survivors of a nuclear attack on Sheffield. It would no doubt have gladdened the hearts of that ragged bunch of unfortunates to know that there is a clothes shop, and a chemist to boot for the Lucozade and plasters. At the end of your journey through Oakbrook Road, there awaits the open air and open space that is Bingham Park. This is a favourite for many who come to see the watermill or just enjoy a walk, as well as those who prefer to run up the gentle slope that makes it ideal for a quick five kilometres. It’s a great place for getting out and making the most of the remaining summer. And the exercise, it goes without saying, is good for you. Just look what it did for Boris. Oakbrook Road has no pretensions to be like anywhere else, but it’s proof that the off-the-beaten track locations are still thriving.
At the bottom of Oakbrook Road you can enter Bingham Park and Whitely Woods

Ashoka Reyt Good Curreh™. But is it? Sheffield seems to think so as Ashoka has now been open for a half century on Ecclesall Road. Ashoka introduced curry to many Sheffield folk when they first opened their doors and fired the tandoor up in 1967, and whilst their adverts and taglines may be memorable, it is the food and service that’s kept guests coming back time after time over the last five decades. With a unique combination of railway, heritage and colonial décor, the experience is different in the best possible way. Dishes of note to try are the mustard pepper lamb chops and Taxi Driver Curry™, and for those who like food hot, the Reyt Spiceh Curreh™ is an absolute must. 307 Ecclesall Road, Sharrow, Sheffield, S11 8NX Tel: 0114 268 3029 / www.ashoka1967.com

EATING OUT
Welcome return CRISIS? WHAT CRISIS? NONNAS IS BACK – AND STILL BUZZING, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. aving been allowed to re-open from the start of July, the biggest challenge facing many pubs, bars and restaurants has been encouraging customers to step back through their doors. For months, the idea of sitting in a restaurant and enjoying a meal seemed to be nothing more than a pipe dream and after getting used to cooking and eating at home, maybe with the odd takeaway or delivery thrown in for good measure, now it’s more a question of will people eat out rather than can they? There seems to be no such crisis of confidence for Nonnas’ customers whom looked happy and comfortable in their surroundings on a surprisingly busy Monday night. It may look a little different – there are less tables to conform with social distancing measures – but it still felt like the Nonnas we know and love. The restaurant is an Ecclesall Road institution and has been since it opened in 1996. Proprietor Maurizio Mori puts its success down to a mixture of tradition, innovation and consistent quality of service. He said: “We have always strived to do something different and serve traditional Tuscan flavours with a Nonnas twist. It’s something our customers truly appreciate and our chefs are always looking for new and innovative ideas. We are lucky to have a truly fantastic team of staff and a fantastic manager in the shape of Stefano Buralli.” Indeed, it was a masked Stefano who greeted us on arrival and showed us to our table. Other staff members were also masked and hand sanitiser was available to use on the way in and out. With less tables the restaurant looked much bigger but felt ‘safe’, if that’s the right word; all staff and diners seemed to be respectful of social distancing measures where possible and it seemed to have that same restaurant buzz. Nonnas is only operating an a la carte menu at present – there are no pasta offers or chef ’s specials – but it had a familiar feel to it, namely good quality

ingredients cooked well. A glass of cold Menabrea beer (£5.25, pint), for me, and a glass of cabernet sauvignon Mezzacoraona (£9.95, 250ml), for her, quickly got us in the mood. We’d brought the whole family so started with focaccia all’aglio (£4.95), fritto misto (£8) and, recommended by Stefano, asparagi fritti (£7.95). My two children, relishing the change in scenery, wolfed the mozzarella and tomatotopped toasted focaccia strips down with particular praise given to the ‘stringiness’ of the cheese. The excellent tempura battered seafood, which consisted of cod, prawns and squid, in my wife’s fritto misto was quickly mopped up with the accompanying lemon mayo. I’m taking bragging rights, though, as my asparagus – also tempura batterered – was the star of the show. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside it was
deliciously moreish and well complemented by the accompanying onion pureé, crispy shallots, micro sorrel and harissa. My daughter and I both chose pasta for main course – rigatoni for her (£7.50), tagliatelle for me (£13.50). All pasta at Nonnas is homemade using only eggs and flour and, on this occasion, both examples were top drawer. Served with their well known and much-loved ragu of eight-hour slow cooked Italian sausage, tomato, bay leaf and chilli I could have eaten more and more. The chilli gave it a real kick too. For me, too many restaurants overcomplicate their pasta dishes but Nonnas have got it just right – simple and delicious. Across the table, my wife followed her seafood starter with more fish, on this occasion the merluzzo (£19), a huge piece

My son enjoyed a chargrilled chicken breast and vegetables (£10) from the ‘bambini’ menu. No-one quite does ice-cream like the Italians and my children savoured every mouthful of the shared bowl of gelati

I couldn’t resist the tiramisu (£7) – I’ve had it before but couldn’t help having it again – while my wife tucked into the pannacotta (£7.50), which was served with a mixed berry compote and vanilla shortbread. Evans Lee “In the era of tick box mentality, where technology appears only to complicate transactions and the ability to properly communicate (not by email) is a dying art, Simon Lee is head and shoulders above the crowd. His understanding of the systems, his empathy with both client and purchaser and his determination to complete the task through constant verbal communication mark him out as an agent destined for success. Whilst most of his competition merely aspire to mediocrity and the process of buying and selling is hindered rather than helped by both lenders and (dare I say it…) slow lawyers, he strives to overcome each problem in a relaxed yet thoughtful manner. Different he may be, but do not underestimate him or his staff. Our house was sold and completed as promised in eight weeks. It follows that we would highly recommend him.” – Mr & Mrs R (S11) 217 Oakbrook Road, Sheffield, S11 7EB Tel: 0114 230 9644 / www.evanslee.co.uk

WEDDINGS
Three, two, one... THE COUNTDOWN TO YOUR WEDDING BEGINS NOW... WE LOOKS AT THOSE LAST-MINUTE THINGS THAT ENSURE YOUR DAY RUNS SMOOTHLY. our wedding day will always be one of the most cherished events in your life, as the memories will continue warming your heart up each time you will flip through a photo album or look back at Facebook ‘Memories’ several years after you gave your vows. Things are a little different right now and, if you’re planning a big celebration, you may already be looking to next year and beyond to tie the knot. If you’re already commmitted to getting married in the coming months, preparation is key, although it can be

very overwhelming. The entire process can take anything between two weeks and two years to complete, as each couple has different needs and wishes, ranging from wanting to throw an extravagant party to deciding on a simple exchange of rings at the local register office. The length of time needed will also depend on whether there will be any unforeseen circumstances, such as a trusted photographer cancelling the photoshoot out of nowhere, or the time available to get ready being extremely limited, which is usually the case in our
busy world. While leaving as much time as possible for a stress-free preparation process is undoubtedly the preferred option, it is not always possible to start thinking about what kind of font will be on your guests’ invitations 12 months in advance. Needless to say, some of the most essential items such as wedding dress and suit are rarely booked several days before the event. Taking everyting into account, we look at those finishing touches that can be perfected in the final few months, including menus, speeches and cakes.

WEDDINGS
Three months before: Try and sort out all the legalities straight away. In England and Wales, you need to notify the register office or the priest at least 28 days in advance. After you’ve sorted that out, it’s time to seriously think about your guest list, because the total number of your closest friends and family could either be 10 or 300. Depending on the number that comes out on your list, the next largest point to tick off from your to-do list is the venue. Over 11,300 governmentapproved venues are patiently waiting for you to pick from, so better start thinking early about what kind of weather will be on your planned day, as soaking under the rain in the middle of a breathtaking field may be the last thing you would want. Don’t forget about figuring out the venue for the post-ceremonial party, and some thorough researching can land you with just one location for both the party and the ceremony. Once that’s done, it’s time to move onto the theme, which can be as unique as your heart desires. It is also the perfect time to start thinking about the colour theme for the bridesmaids’ dresses to avoid choosing their least favourite colours. Also, remember to take care of the entertainment, as it might take a bit longer than you expect to decide what heart-throbbing song you want to sway to with your loved one and what music you want your guests to dance to. As you’ve already begun thinking about the theme, it also won’t hurt to start dealing with all the menus and decorations from the very start. Photographers and videographers should also be taken care of as soon as possible, as you never know how busy they are with running between weddings.
Two months before: Would you like an edible mini sculpture of a bride and a groom romantically holding hands on top of a strawberrydecorated chocolate sponge cake? If yes, then the sooner you deal with the wedding cake, the better. The next couple of months will be filled with careful planning of the tiniest details, which can be as small as booking a florist to get an aromatic bouquet to throw to the bridesmaids. The honeymoon arrangements that will take you and your soulmate onto a
Two weeks before:
paradise adventure might also take a while to decide on. Finally, for your hen and stag parties to be unforgettable in the positive sense of the word, it is better to avoid planning them in the very last moment. Other important aspects such as finding the perfect wedding rings, organising gifts for the helpful guests and calling up those who have not yet responded to invitations should also be taken care of a couple of months in advance.
‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’ is a sweet tradition that can be followed not only by the bride, but also by the groom to make sure that nothing can go wrong in your marriage by pleasing the superstition that is as old as time. The scheduled date for your hen and stag parties should also take place somewhere around this time just in case they are days-long vacations, as you will have to use all the time you can to look fresh for the wedding day once all the partying will come to an end. When it comes to the wedding speeches, avoid scheduling a particular date and follow the flow of your emotions. Once you are ready to write the words of love down, don’t waste a minute to pour your heart onto the paper.
One month before: The next 30 days will be spent ensuring that everything runs absolutely smoothly on the special day. Questions like ‘What time does everything start and end?’, ‘What time should the taxi pick us up and how many taxis should there be?’, ‘Do we want a limousine instead?’, ‘What does the on-the-day timetable look like?’ should all be answered in the last month before the wedding day. It’s also time to draw up a sitting plan for all the guests.
One day before: The next day will be all about you, and you will get to see all the preparations paying off. The best thing to do now is to relax your mind and body by taking a long bath and getting a good night’s rest even if your heart is pounding and you find it hard to fall asleep. Lastly, it’s time to acknowledge the pleasant fact that the great day has finally arrived and it is no longer just a dream. www.sheffieldvibe.com 91

Find ‘the one’ PA JEWELLERY KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT WEDDING RINGS. HERE ARE THERE TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT BAND. hen choosing your wedding rings, the options can seem endless and selecting the one that’s right for you can appear a daunting task. However, considering a few key factors before you start can make it easier to find ‘the one’ that you can love forever.
W
Timescale Make sure you allow plenty of time to choose your rings and have them made. There are hundreds of styles to choose from, so it can take a while to decide and you’ll be more relaxed if you aren’t in a hurry. Our customers often find it helpful to have a first look well in advance of the big day before making a final decision later. Although most of our rings take 3-4 weeks to order, some bespoke designs can take longer. We recommend allowing twice as much time to avoid unnecessary worry.
Expectations Do you want to wear your ring all the time? How important is it to you that the ring you choose now can be worn for a lifetime? Our experienced team can help you find a design that is both practical and beautiful, advising on how different materials wear and what 94 www.sheffieldvibe.com
upkeep designs require. For instance, choosing a ring made from titanium or steel may mean you cannot have it resized if your fingers change in the future, while a diamond set band will need additional maintenance over the years to ensure your diamonds are securely set. Taking expert advice and making an informed decision now will help you enjoy your rings for many anniversaries to come.
Engagement ring Most brides wear their wedding ring next to their engagement ring and a neat fit is increasingly a key factor in the choice of design. Modern engagement rings are often designed to sit next to a wedding band, but some designs, especially twist or cluster styles, may require a shaped ring. There are lots of solutions available, from bespoke ‘made-to-fit’ designs to preexisting wishbone or ‘bow-shaped’ styles. If you won’t be wearing your engagement ring all the time, consider how the wedding ring will look on its own as well. Trying examples on is the best way of seeing what will work and is another reason for getting started early.
Style This is the fun part! There are lots of
styles to choose from (plain, patterned, stone-set…) and the best way to decide is by trying lots on, but you can start beforehand by thinking about whether you’d prefer a classic or modern style, whether there is a detail in your engagement ring you’d like to pick up on or something personal you’d like to incorporate. This will help us to show you the perfect designs that you can fall in love with. A festival like no other ROBERT PLUMBRIDGE LOOKS AHEAD TO THIS YEAR’S ST LEGER FESTIVAL – THE RUNNERS, THE RIDERS AND WHETHER SPECATORS COULD POTENTIALLY MAKE A RETURN. acing, like all industries, has felt the tremendous impact of the Covid-19 pandemic across the board. For trainers, owners, stable staff, jockeys and numerous others, the sport’s closure at the height of the crisis saw loss of earnings and livelihood for many. There was also the matter of 15,000 or so racehorses needing the continuation of the superb care they receive day-in day-out. Racing, to its credit, was one of the first sports given the green light to get back behind closed doors. Strict protocols were put in place, such as social distancing, racecourse screenings, PPE for all participants and officers at courses to ensure it is all adhered to. By and large it has all gone relatively smoothly over the past two months and with Government restrictions eased across other industries thoughts have turned to when racecourses will see muchneeded crowds returning. This is a vital step for racecourses, many of whom are hugely reliant on crowds through the gates to survive. Doncaster is no different and the St Leger meeting is the biggest crowd-puller of the year. Therefore the racecourse is looking to become the first big meeting to be a ‘test next stage’ where they would allow a crowd on each day of the meeting, albeit a much smaller one than that of a normal year. Plans for 5,000 spectators at Goodwood were scrapped at the last minute due to Boris Johnson postponing the easing of restrictions. Doncaster, however, is hopeful that by 9 September there will be a good chance to try crowds coming in again. Mark Spincer, managing director of their operating company’s racing division, said: “I will be putting forward that Doncaster becomes the next pilot. We’ll do all we can and work with all the representative bodies to have the chance to have the next trial.” This would be a huge boost to the local economy and a positive step to getting racing back to normality, with racegoers getting to enjoy the sport live once again. Whether the St Leger is run behind closed doors or not, it is sure to go ahead. Read on as we look at some of the leading contenders to win the world’s oldest classic.

It could be a while before we see crowds like this at Doncaster Racecourse
Could it be Love in the St Leger? The Doncaster St Leger makes up part of the five British Classic Flat Races – traditionally the biggest and most prestigious races in the UK racing calendar. Established in 1776 by Anthony St Leger and first run on Town Moor in 1778, it is also the oldest. The race is for three-year-old horses only, and is run over a distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs making it the longest. It is therefore a unique test of both speed and stamina, one which many of the contenders will not have faced in their short careers. Like most years, this season’s St Leger looks to have a wideopen look to it, with many trainers yet to decide which of their runners will head for the prestigious Group 1 contest. We’ve broken down some of the potential stars who could be challenging on Saturday 12 September.

Aidan O’Brien’s Love
Aidan O’Brien’s triple threat Since the turn of the century, two trainers have dominated British Flat Racing – Aidan O’Brien and John Gosden. Between them they have won ten renewals of the St Leger since 2000. Ireland’s top trainer Aidan, from the powerhouse Ballydoyle operation, looks sure to saddle this year’s favourite with three top contenders potentially ready to line up. Top of the list is Love. Should she line up she’d be in line to win the tough feat of the Fillies’ Triple Crown (1000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks and St Leger) having won the first of those two races in style. She has developed into one of the most exciting and talented horses around this season, impressively winning the 1000 Guineas before blowing the field apart at Epsom in the Oaks. > Continued on the next page www.sheffieldvibe.com 103

That was against top-class opposition from her own sex. The St Leger would provide a new challenge and see her pitted against the boys. There would be no doubt however that she would start as a red-hot favourite. She would certainly be the most likely winner of the race, but doubts remain as to whether she is sure to line up. A trip to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has been mooted by connections and is the likely main target for her. Santiago would be next on the list for this trainer. He announced his name as a horse out of the top drawer at Royal Ascot, blitzing the field in tough conditions in the Queens Vase in a style of horse sure to appreciate the longer distance that the St Leger offers. He was slightly disappointing last time at Goodwood – however that was against a superstar in the form of Stradivarius, so lost little in defeat there. Then the master trainer has the option of Mogul. He bounced back from a disappointing run in the Epsom Derby with a hard-fought victory against good opposition at Goodwood last time. The manner of which looked like a horse that would relish the optimum at Doncaster and would see him best to effect. It will be interesting to see which of the three Aidan will pick to run in September, but he is sure to have at least one lining up.
English King for the crown? Up-and-coming trainer Ed Walker is looking to get stable star English King’s season back on track. He looked like a real

prospect when he won with consummate ease in a Derby trial at Lingfield. However, since then he failed to get into the race when favourite in the Derby in July, and was similarly disappointing in calmer waters last time out at Goodwood, a race which was won by Mogul who also could line up against him at Doncaster. Trainer Walker will now make a decision whether to take his charge up north from Lambourn to Doncaster, or across the channel for a raid in France. After the race at Goodwood,Walker said: “He’s come out of Goodwood great. We were disappointed but it was a funny old race again, and he just didn’t come down the hill well at all. “We want to get him back on a flatter track again and we’ve not yet decided whether it’ll be the St Leger or the Grand Prix de Paris at Deauville. “He’ll go straight to one of those.”
The Leger to stay in Yorkshire? A local winner is always appreciated at Doncaster and no Yorkshire operation is better equipped this year than Britain’s winning-most trainer Mark Johnston. He has suggested that his impressive Hamilton winner Subjectivist could be in line for a tilt at a first Group 1 this year. He is a half brother to last year’s runner up Sir Ron Priestley, and is now rated higher than he was at this stage of his career. Johnston in no stranger to winning a Classic either, having won both the 2000 and 1000 Guineas in an illustrious career.

Record breaker... Last year’s winner, Logician. Ridden by Frankie Dettori
Legends of the St Leger – a timeline 1776 – The St Leger is first devised by Anthony St Leger, an army officer and politician who lived near the town. It was originally run over 2 miles and known as the ‘Sweepstake for 25 Guineas’. The first running, on 24 September 1776, was won by a filly called Allabaculia, was owned by the event’s organiser, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham. 1800 – The race gains national recognition when the aptly named winner, Champion, became the first horse to register a win in both the Epsom Derby and St Leger. 1853 – West Australia becomes the first horse to win the Triple Crown – a horse winning the 2000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and St Leger in their three-year-old year. 1939-1945 – Due to the outbreak of the war the race is cancelled in 1939. It then took place at Thirsk, Manchester, Newmarket and York during the war years. 1970 – Perhaps the most famous post-war winner of the
race Nijinsky triumphs on Town Moor to write his name in history as a Triple Crown winner. A feat that has not been repeated since. He was ridden by the legendary Lester Piggott and trained by Vincent O’Brien. 1982 – Oh So Sharp becomes the first filly in modern times to win the Fillies’ Triple Crown, having won the 1000 Guineas and Epsom Oaks earlier that year. Trained by the late, great Sir Henry Cecil, she is considered one of the best fillies in the modern era. 2015 – The 2015 race is initially awarded to Bondi Beach after the first-placed Simple Verse was disqualified, but the decision gets reversed on 23 September 2015 after an appeal by Simple Verse’s connections. 2019 – Logician wins the race for the legendary trainer/jockey partnership John Gosden and Frankie Dettori. Not only does he win the race he does so in a record time of 3 mins 0.27 seconds.

Don’t miss the action WITH SPECTATORS UNLIKELY TO BE ABLE TO ATTEND THIS MONTH’S ST LEGER FESTIVAL, WHY NOT BRING THE RACING HOME, AND HOST YOUR OWN PARTY? he St Leger, the world’s oldest classic, will be very different this year. The four-day festival, which will take place between 9 and 12 September, will offer the same top-level racing but with one thing missing – spectators. Usually such a big part of the festivities, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, spectators will be absent from this year’s event, which begs the question, how can you enjoy all the fun of a day at the races without actually being there? The answer? Host your own St Leger party at home. Had you already bought the outfit in preparation for Ladies Day? Don’t worry, dress up in your finest, pop some Champagne corks and invite some friends round for a socially distanced celebration. If the sun is shining, a garden party is just the ticket. We have ideas for food, for drink, how you can watch that all-important action and more.
T
106 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Venue If you’re hosting at home, you’ll be praying for good weather so you can make sure you’re celebration stays outside. To cover all eventualities, hiring a marquee (if you have the room) is a good option and will ensure you stay dry, whatever the weather. Rent a Tent (0114 345 0445) and have a range of affordable gazebos and marquees depending on your party size. For example, an 8x4m marquee, which is covered on all sides and can seat up to 30 people (less with social distancing), is priced from just £220. They can also provide furniture, heating, lighting and DJ equipment if required. Give them a call or visit http://www.tentforrent.co.uk to find out more.
Entertainment Once the venue, food and drink are all sorted and your guests have arrived suitably attired, you’ll need somewhere – or, more importantly, something – on which to watch all the racing action. Williams Electrical (0114 255 4341) in Sheffield is a family-run business and specialists in everything audiovisual. They stock the latest range of 4K televisions, perfect for capturing all the action down to its finest detail. With this 65-inch Sony 4K UHD HDR Smart TV (£699) you’ll feel like you’re right there at Town Moor in the thick of the raceday action. Browse further at www.williams-electrical.co.uk

CELEBRATION
What to wear For women, the St Leger is always about Thursday’s Ladies Day. Each year we send our intrepid photographer out into the crowds to capture the best dressed. Food
Once you’ve sorted out the food you can turn your attention to keeping your guests lubricated. Of course, what you’re serving to eat might dictate what you give your invitees to drink; cans of cold lager probably won’t sit well with a threecourse dinner but would pair well with slices of fresh pizza, for example. Chances are you’ll need a selection of beers, wines, spirits and, of course, champagne to celebrate all those winners. If you’re thinking of bringing in some outside help, Yorkshire Bartender (01347 811936) has a range of bars and equipment to suit all sizes of celebration. All their menus feature a selection of high quality cocktails, liquors, wines, draught beer and ales, all at affordable drinks prices. Also included is all bar equipment, including cocktail shakers, beer pumps, straws; a wide range of high quality glassware and experienced bartenders to run your bar smoothly.Visit www.yorkshirebartender.co.uk to find out more. Is there a better drink pairing for a garden party than gin and tonic? Food will be at the centrepiece of any daytime celebration and whether you cater it yourself, or get some outside help, the choices are endless. For more formal celebrations you might opt for a sit-down, three-course meal complete with classic white tablecloths and silver service. The expert view EVENTS SPECIALISTS YOU & US PRESENT THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO HOSTING A ST LEGER-THEMED PARTY AT HOME. ho doesn’t like a day at the races? Glamorous outfits, Champagne on ice and horses on display, these events have a wide appeal. Yorkshire’s classic St Leger Festival is the highlight of the British horse racing calendar and attracts thousands of visitors each year. Sadly, with no spectators allowed this year, we’ve had to get more creative to keep the tradition alive. Just because you can’t attend the live event, doesn’t mean you should miss out on all the fun! We have put together a few tips to help you plan your very own St Leger Festival at home.

classics, such as mint julep or refreshing Pimm’s. Alternatively, you could set up a cocktail making station with all the ingredients and garnishes for your guests to get creative. You should also serve other beverages, like champagne, beer, wine and soft drinks, to cater to different tastes. With all the alcohol flowing, you will want to make sure there is plenty of food to go by too. Think a light and fresh cocktail party style menu with lots of
The Dress Code To make your virtual St Leger Festival feel more authentic, dress to impress. Follow the event dress code, for the ladies smart attire and a head-piece and for the gentleman suit and tie. Remember, no trainers, jeans or sportswear are allowed! Decor Create a racing day atmosphere with some elegant decor. Consider flower arrangements, lanterns and festoon lights. You can also add some fun feel with bunting. Some iconic elements, such as horseshoes, riding cups and jockey outfits, will add final touches to the decor. You can incorporate these using images, prints and props. When it comes to the colour palette, incorporate some bright colours that you see worn by the jockeys and pair it with the elegance of black or white. However, remember when it comes to bright colours, less is more! Food & Drink Cocktails are a staple of the horse racing events. Put your cocktail making skills to the test and wow your guests with some
flavour. Bite-size canapes or, our favourite, grazing boards would work a treat. Alternatively, you could throw an afternoon tea party to bring a touch of sophistication to the event. If you want to keep your catering Covidproof, local caterers will be able to offer individually packed party food and drink bags that can be tailored to your event theme. Entertainment Watching the races will be the highlight of your event so make sure you have a good method for broadcasting them live. A big cinema style screen would really bring the atmosphere into the room or your garden.
High stakes It wouldn’t be a day at the races without a little gambling. Pull out the sweepstakes. You could choose to allocate horses at random, pick names out of the hat or let everyone pick their favourites. Everyone can chip in some money and first, second and third take a prize! You could also host a St Leger-themed quiz. Pick one person to be the quiz master. Then test your guests’ knowledge on racing history for the chance to be named the St Ledger quiz master 2020. And to keep things competitive, why not run a Best Dressed competition. What will motivate your guests more to get their finest fashion on, if not the chance to win some fabulous prizes. If you have a big garden and want to add a fun element to your event, you could hire an inflatable “St Leger’’ horse race. This game is exactly like being on a giant space hopper; the challenge is to ride the horse and make your way to the finish line without falling off your horse. It will provide great fun for all ages. Hopefully this provided you some inspiration to kick-start your party planning. Enjoy your virtual St Leger Festival and be sure to share your party photos with us on Instagram @youandusevents!

Been there, done that... Lee Ashmore and his wife Sarah go to Royal Ascot every year and have done for the last 12 years or so. Until this year. Not wanting to miss out, Lee decided to host his own Royal Ascot party at home, inviting ten guests for a socially distant celebration. He bought a marquee, which was erected in his front garden, and borrowed tables and chairs from his dad’s café, which was closed whilst a TV was set up in the garden to catch all the racing action. Guests arrived from 10.30am, suitably attired, for a champagne reception. Sarah prepared a five-course meal of tomato soup and crusty bread, slow cooked beef shin in red wine, lemon meringue pie, cheese board and coffee. This was followed by afternoon tea later in the day. Lee’s daughter, Charlie, became the waitress for the day. “It took a day to set up and half a day to clear away but it was really good so we’re going to do it all again for the Ebor and St Leger meetings,” said Lee. Looks like they had a great time.

Culinary adventure TODAY’S CHILDREN ARE TRULY SPOILT, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY ON A RECENT FAMILY TRIP TO A SHEFFIELD FAVOURITE. hat was food like in your household growing up? I’d never really given it a second thought until recently when it cropped up in conversation between my wife and I. Looking back, I’d say it was pretty traditional – lots of Sunday roasts, cottage pies, stews (with a splash of Hendo’s) and maybe the odd spaghetti bolognaise. My wife, on the other hand, comes from an Italian family and her tales from the table are filled with trays of pasta, homemade polpette and tiramisu. Getting food envy? Me too. Now, this is no slight on my mum, who I’ve always considered to be a good cook, but our meals growing up perhaps lacked that sense of adventure. Italian food was about as ‘exotic’ as we got; I can’t remember trying Chinese food

until I was in my early teens and, tragically, I don’t think I had a proper curry until I was at university (I can thank my housemates for that) – and that was probably a korma. If we ate out, my mum chose (and still does) pretty much the same thing each time and is often reluctant to try anything ‘new’. Children growing up these days are much more worldly wise when it comes to cuisine and my two, aged seven and nine, are no exception. Not only do they enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to Anglo-Italian dining but such is the variety of restaurants – and Sheffield scores highly here – that they can pretty much try anything that takes their fancy. As a family we’d made curries at home, with shop bought poppadoms and naan breads, but, let’s be honest, it’s no substitute for the real thing. And so we found ourselves turning up on the doorstep of the Everest Restaurant on a Saturday to give my children a ‘proper’ curry experience. Sited on Chesterfield Road since 1978 (it’s as old as me!), it is one of the longest established Asian restaurants in the city serving Indian and Pakistani style food. Owner Nasir Raja is a genial host and, along with his staff, made us all feel incredibly welcome. During conversation we discovered that we actually live around the corner from each other and Nasir speaks Italian, after spending 12 months training in Rome – small world indeed. The Everest is adhering to all government guidelines regarding the Covid-19 pandemic with socially
distanced tables, hand sanitiser on entry and exit, and all staff members wearing visors. This in no way distracted from the experience and, judging by how busy the restaurant was, it has picked up from where it left off pre-lockdown. There’s a bar area as you enter on the right-hand side and the restaurant is divided into two areas with booth and table seating on both sides. Black, grey and silver décor is complemented by tasteful artworks. We took a booth seat and ordered ice cold glasses of Cobra beer (£3.90 pint) before tucking into a portion of poppadoms (70p each) and pickle tray (£2.40), a popular choice with our young diners. Just a note, all menus are now digital and accessed via a QR code placed on each table. Starters of a mixed kebab (£4.20) and an Everest special (£5.50) – a mix of chicken, lamb and king prawn tikka – followed and ticked all the right boxes for texture and flavour. Crispy onion bhaji was complemented by a meaty seekh kebab and delicate pakora whilst a squeeze of lemon added extra zing to the already tangy tikka. Making sure our children didn’t feel left out, although they happily tucked into our dishes, Nasir brought them the Everest’s own version of fishfingers – fish pakoras (£4.50) – which they loved. For main course my children shared a chicken korma (£6.20) and cheese naan (£2.80) whilst my wife and I upped the spice stakes with a lamb karai (£8.20) and chicken rezela (£7.90). The latter dish, made with green chillies, had a real
kick and was gratefully mopped up by the accompanying pilau rice (£2.50) and garlic and coriander naan (£2.90). We couldn’t find fault with any dish; my children loved the cheese naan in particular and ate every chunk of chicken; our curries were excellent as were the accompanying sundries. Disappointingly, we ate every bit so there was no leftovers to take home, which is often a bonus when visiting an Indian restaurant. The Everest Restaurant has plenty to shout about having recently been selected as a TripAdvisor-affiliated Travelers’ Choice 2020 Winner. This is judged from the hundreds and thousands of reviews and ratings given by travellers visiting restaurants the world over. Food and quality of service were impeccable throughout our visit. The Everest Restaurant fully rewards a sense of adventure, although I don’t think I’ll be getting my mum there any time soon. My children on the other hand... they’d be back in a flash. Quality counts MARTIN EDWARDS VISITS A RESTAURANT THAT IS LEADING THE WAY IN A QUEST FOR EXCELLENCE. Chinese friend of mine once told me a little about the nuances of the language. It’s largely down to pronunciation, apparently. As an example, he spoke two different words. To my ear, they were identical. They weren’t. The first meant ‘bean curd’, the second underpants. The moral of the story is this; One, if you like to try out your languages on the waiter when you visit a restaurant, don’t. Certainly in Cantonese. Two, what is on the surface a small difference can be much larger than you bargained for. It’s the same in English. Take the words ‘quantity’ and ‘quality’. Sound similar, but in practice they’re light years apart. Never was this more the case than in the restaurant business. It used to be accepted wisdom that the only
A

restaurants to stand a chance of survival in Sheffield were those which offered ‘value for money’ (translation again – ‘more than you could possibly eat and who cares about the quality’). A trip to the Chinese almost without exception involved filling up on cheap inauthentic food at a restaurant or allyou-can-eat venue. Fast-forward to 2020. The Chinese presence in Sheffield is stronger than ever before. And with it has come a new breed of restaurateur. It is fitting that the Chinatown restaurant is virtually the first door you come to on Sheffield’s unofficial Chinatown district on London Road. It’s here that owner Martin Ng is leading the way in a quest for excellence above all else. In what was for years the landmark Candytown restaurant, he has wrought a
transformation not only in the appearance of the place, but in the standards of cuisine served there. Gone are the threadbare carpets and worn interior of distant memory, to be replaced by sumptuous furnishing and tables with those revolving tops that we Brits call a Lazy Susan. There is undoubtedly a Chinese translation of it, but let’s not go there. “When I took the place over, we absolutely tore the interior apart and started again. My aim was to create a totally different look to reflect a new start in the kitchen. I brought three expert chefs over with me from Hong Kong so we could be sure we had the best team behind us,” said Martin. The new emphasis was on quality of ingredients and above all freshness. The supreme test of that mission statement came with the scallops

recommended by Martin. He didn’t need to tell us they were supremely fresh, or that they were cooked to perfection. It was evident from the ‘oohhss’ and ‘aahhss’ around the table. Simple but beautifully presented, they were going to be a hard act to follow. There is not one, but two menus at Chinatown. The first is a sizeable standard menu, while the second caters
more for the Chinese clientele, with specialities such as Dim Sum. Incidentally, I’m not going to repeat the oft-quoted homily that a Chinese Restaurant must be good if there are lots of Chinese people in there. By the same token, would you be reassured about McDonalds because it was full of Americans? Chinatown is good – nay, very good, in
its own right. And so we ordered from both menus, just to be adventurous. We were rewarded with a turbot dish quite unlike any other ever encountered. Turbot happened to be the fresh fish of the day and the chefs served it in small goujons on a bed of Chinese vegetables in a ‘bowl’ made from the whole fish deep-fried and crispy. We feasted on abalone, prawn-stuffed aubergine cakes, delightfully-crisp salt and pepper tofu and aubergine (we like aubergines), along with the more familiar sesame prawn toasts and an accompaniment of pak choi cooked in garlic. A cold Tsing-Tao beer and a glass of the Conde Valdemar white Rioja, and our evening was complete. Chinatown 27 London Road, Sheffield, S2 4LA Tel: 0114 272 5311 www.chinatownrestaurant.co.uk

mbitious plans from Sheffield social enterprise and not-forprofit restaurant, Blend Kitchen, are coming to fruition after they faced a Covid-19, economic downturn, reduced funding and the scheduled demolition of its city centre premises. The organisation, which provides hospitality training and paid work experience to vulnerable adults and marginalised groups, is opening on Ecclesall Road after receiving support from Sheffield’s rock ‘n’ roll troubadour Richard Hawley, the educational publisher Twinkl, and a growing number of local businesses. Thanks to a significant cash injection from online educational publishing house ‘Twinkl’ and the offer of a new prime location at their Sheffield HQ on Ecclesall Road, the autumn opening of a new restaurant, events space and hospitality training facility for Blend Kitchen is back on track. Jonathan Seaton, CEO and co-founder of Twinkl said: “At Twinkl, we are, and

always will be, a missional business that puts people at the core of what we do – our customers, team members and local community. Therefore, it goes without saying that we were delighted with the prospect of supporting Blend Kitchen with their new premises and working with an organisation that shares our values and mission to help others. “The whole team at Twinkl is really looking forward to having Blend Kitchen located underneath our Sheffield headquarters. It will be a great place for our team to go, especially knowing that by popping in for a mid-morning coffee or grabbing something for lunch will be supporting Blend Kitchen too. It is going to make a wonderful addition to Ecclesall Road and we’re delighted to be a part of making it happen.” Two-time Mercury Prize nominee Richard Hawley, whose love and passion of his home community is well documented, is joining as patron. He said: “I can think of no higher honour than to be asked to lend my name as
patron to a place that gives people a sense of worth and value in this world whilst at the same time teaching them skills to secure that worth and value on their own. “I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all the Blend team the very best of wishes for a brighter future. I look forward to seeing you all very soon, can’t wait... it’ll be something I’ll relish.” Over the last two years from its current site on Pinstone Street, Blend Kitchen has successfully been supporting and changing the lives of some of Sheffield’s most vulnerable and disenfranchised adults, including those affected by diagnosed mental health conditions, autism, both learning and physical disabilities, and homelessness. Founded by Chris Hanson, a local chef turned social entrepreneur, the social enterprise provides structured hospitality training and paid work experience to individuals marginalised by a lack of access to rights, resources, and opportunities.

This work has been recognised and supported by Children In Need and the National Lottery for over two years. New premises have been on the cards as their current city centre location is being redeveloped as part of the Heart of the City II scheme. Other Sheffield businesses stepping forward to date are TDC AV, Shearstone Mechanical, Sheffield Laser, Nifty Fox Creative, filmmaker Rob Speranza, Phoenix Kitchens as well as revered restaurateur Richard Smith. Chris Hanson added: “When I started Blend after the birth of my daughter I’ll never forget the day I paid £10 of my own money to open our business bank account with the ambition of creating something special for my city. Since then we have grown year on year transforming the lives of people who
normally wouldn’t be given a chance by most employers, while providing a first class experience to our diners. “As the economy struggles in the ongoing wake of the coronavirus pandemic, vulnerable adults will find it even harder to secure good quality placements and real employment opportunities, making Blend’s work even more important and necessary than ever. “Whether we like it or not, work gives us identity and purpose in life. To deny opportunity to someone who wants to work, because of their mental, physical or socioeconomic status, is not part of a progressive society and that needs to change. “This incredible team effort will ensure, at a time of global crisis for the hospitality industry, Blend Kitchen and its mission will not just survive, but thrive.”

Working together HIDDEN GEM CAFE AT BENTS GREEN HAS BEEN PARTNERED WITH WORK LTD SINCE 2014. BY REBECCA WALES. et back from Ringinglow Road behind Bents Green School, the Hidden Gem Café has been the perfect quiet retreat for many people since its establishment in 2014. For many years the café has been involved with WORK Ltd, which is a local, unique and very special charity that offers people with learning disabilities a chance to develop life skills that help to build confidence and selfesteem. Glynis Philliskirk, who has been involved with WORK Ltd since 1997, has seen the Hidden Gem evolve from being “a little café that mostly serves bacon sandwiches and jacket potatoes” to a bistro café that appeals to a significantly wider array of people. “As a charity, you always need to plan for the future”, said Glynis. “And the plan to transform the original little café into the Hidden Gem was initially the idea of Scott Philliskirk.” Scott, who now runs The Cross Scythes at Totley with his business

partner Ben Stazi, “raised the profile of the Hidden Gem for over five years”, said Glynis. “And when he left, head chef Sam Baker took the reins. Since then, Sam and his team have continued to delight the Hidden Gem’s customers with his delicious food.” The café prides itself on using locally sourced produce which is freshly prepared on site every day and in order to ensure that they take advantage of the seasonal local produce available, the café regularly changes its menu. With regards to how WORK Ltd collaborates with the Hidden Gem, Glynis
explained that “some of our students are able to go into the café where they love to welcome customers. They are also taught how to organise the cutlery/napkins, clear tables etc. and we are very proud to have two of our students help the chefs to prep in the kitchen.” Looking back, Glynis said that she was proud of how much the charity and the café had achieved over the years. “Since 1997, my objective has been to grow the charity along with my amazing colleagues and I believe that, despite going against many odds, we have achieved that goal.”

It has been a very difficult year for everyone and it’s a pleasure to be able to help stage such an important event in the city’s arts calendar.” Art In The Gardens takes place on Saturday and Sunday 5 and 6 September with a preview evening on Friday 4 September. BUSINESS NEWS
Don’t make job cuts the first option in a financial crisis In uncertain economic times, there is one area that businesses often turn to when thinking of making savings. But leading insolvency expert Deborah Lockwood says that redundancy is not always the way to weather a financial storm. And as companies begin to assess the damage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, she is urging them not to assume that job cuts alone will provide a solution to commercial woes. “As the government’s furlough scheme begins to wind down and other financial support start to withdraw, businesses will have to start thinking about how they will proceed if they want a secure future,” said Deborah, a partner in Sheffield insolvency and recovery practice Graywoods. “It’s inevitable that businesses will say that in order to survive they will need to cut costs but they should stop and ask themselves if redundancies are really the answer. “Look at a wage bill for a full year and it might initially seem like a lot of money to be paying out but when you break those figures down over 52 weeks, the saving might not seem so big after all. “And by going down the redundancy route you are most probably be going to cut one of your company’s best assets and the thing that helped to create the success in the first place.” In some areas, Deborah added, it seemed almost inevitable that redundancy would be the only possible route. “If, for example, you are in the events sector, there seems to be little chance of any return to full operational success in the short term ans reduction in staff will be the only sensible option,” she said. For further information and support from Graywoods call 0114 285 9500 or visit graywoods.co.uk
Make yourself at home Businesses and communities of Sheffield are getting a helping hand after a new initiative to support them has been launched. The aim of the campaign, created by Marketing Sheffield (part of Sheffield City Council), is to give confidence to residents as they begin to interact more with various areas of the city and to support businesses in their economic recovery. It will be used to promote the city as a whole, as well as give businesses a toolkit they can use to communicate to their own customers. The Council has consulted with private sector organisations through the city’s Sheffield Business Response Group to help produce ‘Make Yourself at Home’, alongside the council’s own Public Health and City Centre Management in order to align business recovery with essential public health messaging concerning Coronavirus (Covid-19). A ‘Make Yourself at Home’ marketing toolkit is also available for anyone to download and use to promote their own business, organisation or community as part of the campaign. www.welcometosheffield.co.uk/ makeyourselfathome/toolkit
Wellbeing start-up expands The Sheffield-based organisation Champion Health is expanding its digital wellbeing platform after receiving an increase in enquiries, and new investment from the global educational publisher, Twinkl. Launched by social entrepreneur Harry Bliss, Champion Health helps businesses optimise the health and wellbeing of staff by offering proactive health assessments, data-driven solutions and online mental health training. The company has recently seen a surge in enquiries as businesses seek to do more to support the wellbeing of their employees during this uncertain time. Since March, Champion Health has had 7,000 new individual registrations and over 400 businesses and company sign-ups. This is compared to 1,500 signups the business had at the start of 2020. In April, the company made its online mental health training free in response to the increase in enquiries and the impact that the lockdown period and working from home was having on people’s wellbeing. Champion Health is a resident at Twinkl’s business accelerator, TwinklHive, which offers space, investment, and support services to start-ups that are set to make a difference in society. TwinklHive, in Sheffield, has been home to the company since March but this month also invested in the platform. This will enable Champion Health to expand its team over the next few months. St Luke’s need you St Luke’s Hospice has launched an urgent fundraising appeal as it prepares to maintain its vital work beyond the COVID19 pandemic. The charity has maintained its core patient care services to the people of Sheffield throughout the international coronavirus crisis. But with the St Luke’s shops having closed for more than three months and major fundraising events cancelled, the charity’s finances have been badly hit. The charity’s new fundraising campaign points out that a £6 a month donation could contribute to nutritionally balanced food packages that are prepared and delivered to patients at home who are perhaps shielding or unable to cook for themselves. A £12 a month donation could go towards the cost of the St Luke’s community nurses delivering vital care and pain relief to patients when needed, in the comfort of their own homes. And £18 a month could contribute to the ongoing cost of providing the St Luke’s 24 hour specialist palliative care for up to 20 patients at a time at the hospice’s In Patient Centre. To find out more about St Luke’s and its campaign for monthly donations visit stlukeshospice.org.uk

Stamp duty holiday boosts property enquiries at Graysons iving a huge boost to the property market, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, announced in his summer statement on 8 July that no stamp duty will be payable on property purchased between 8 July 2020 and 31 March 2021 up to the value of £500,000. Caroline Murray, partner and head of the property team at Graysons, says: “We have already seen a big increase in the number of conveyancing enquiries since the lockdown restrictions were lifted – up 20 per cent on the same period last year – and I expect that the holiday will provide the confidence for many more to make the move.” If you are buying your main home, you will now not pay any stamp duty on the first £500,000. After that, stamp duty is payable at five per cent up to the value of £975,000, then ten per cent up to the value of £1.5million and 12 per cent above that. The new rate also applies to first-time buyers, who could previously purchase property up to £300,000 with no stamp duty payable and would then have to pay five per cent on anything between £300,000 and £500,000. They would then be subject to standard stamp duty rates. If you are buying a second property that is not your main home, including if you are buying to let, whilst you will benefit from the temporary stamp duty holiday, you will still have to pay the enhanced stamp duty rate, which is three per cent above the standard rate. So, on properties up to the value of £500,000 the stamp duty payable will be three per cent, then eight per cent up to £925,000, 13 per cent up to £1.5million and 15 per cent above that. The new rates apply to individuals as well as companies as long as you are buying a residential property. You must remember, however, that stamp duty will revert to its standard rate on 1 April 2021, when it will become payable at three per cent on properties over the value of £125,000, two per cent on properties up to £250,000, five

per cent up to £975,000, ten per cent up to £1.2million and 12 per cent above that. First time buyers will benefit from the special first-time buyer rate of zero per cent on properties up to £300,000 and five per cent between £300,000 and £500,000. Caroline continues: “Stamp duty is a major, and often worrying, expense for buyers, which could have meant them putting off purchasing during and following coronavirus. The move is excellent news for buyers and sellers – but you probably need to start the process now to take advantage. Interest in properties for sale will certainly increase – and we are seeing that already at Graysons. If you are selling, it’s a good time to get your property up for sale so that buyers can complete their purchases within the holiday period. If you are buying, there should be more properties on offer, but also more competition to buy and increasing prices as that competition grows, so it’s best to start looking early.” Caroline’s view of an increased interest in property is shared by other professionals too. A survey carried out by national property website, Zoopla, shows that 86 per cent of people who were
planning to move before the COVID-19 shutdown are still going ahead with their plans, and it forecasts that growth in house prices will not start to fall until at least the end of the year. At the beginning of July, Zoopla indicated whilst demand for older homes is still higher than it was pre-lockdown, at an increase of 46 per cent, interest in newbuild properties has risen 66 per cent since the end of the property lockdown. Much of the interest is with first-time buyers, where demand has risen 87 per cent compared with during lockdown. Caroline says: “It’s good to see the property market bounce back with such vigour, demonstrating buyers’ and sellers’ confidence. The stamp duty holiday has certainly helped. Our property experts are ready to help and you can contact them for a quote. You can also get a competitive, no obligation quote on our website at www.graysons.co.uk/ conveyancing-quote.” Contact our property team at: Email: property@graysons.co.uk Tel: 01142 050 366 www.facebook.co.uk/GraysonsLaw Twitter: @Graysonslaw www.graysons.co.uk

The Sheffield Menopause Clinic This is a recent addition to Caroline Hill Clinic and is a private nurse-led service for the management and treatment of menopausal symptoms. It is offered on a self-pay basis for women who wish to receive information, advice and treatment of menopausal symptoms as an alternative to the NHS provision. “We are dedicated to ensuring women receive up to date, accurate and unbiased evidence-based care,” explains Caroline. “I have a special interest in menopause care, having recognised that many women are unable to access the information and treatment they require. We can diagnose and manage early menopause and help women in the transition phase (perimenopause).” The menopause is a natural transition for a woman as she ages. However, as we are now living longer the effects of
oestrogen depletion on the body can be profound and lead to significant health issues, such as heart disease and osteoporosis. Symptoms such as hot flushes, anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia, urinary incontinence and vaginal dryness can be debilitating. “We can prescribe HRT for you and inform your GP with the outcome of your assessment and treatment choice. We want to dispel the myths around menopause and HRT, so that you can make an informed decision about your health,” adds Caroline. Consultations are offered either within the clinical setting or remotely online.

MOTORING
NEW HYBRID AND ELECTRIC VEHICLES DOMINATE THIS MONTH’S NEWS.
Spark of electricity
True example
The spark of electrification ignites Maserati’s future with the launch of the new Ghibli Hybrid – the first in the marque’s history. In perfect harmony with its DNA, Maserati has chosen a hybrid solution focused primarily on improving performance, while also reducing fuel consumption and cutting emissions. The hybrid technology exploits the kinetic energy the car accumulates when in motion, recovering it and transforming it into electricity during deceleration and braking, and storing it in a battery. The innovative powertrain combines an internal combustion engine with a 48-volt alternator and an additional electric supercharger, supported by a battery. Power output tops out at 330hp with 450Nm of torque. Maserati’s first all-electric cars will follow in 2021.
Jeep have also ventured into the electric market with the launch of the Renegade 4xe, which will be in showrooms from September, priced from £32,600. The Jeep Renegade 4xe is centered on the pillars of efficiency, performance and responsibility. It will be the most fuel-efficient Jeep SUV ever, with the new 4xe technology offering zero tailpipe-emission in full electric mode. Efficiency is not achieved at the expense of performance. The Jeep Renegade 4xe remains true to its all-terrain vocation while offering an enhanced driving experience on the road, with smooth responses and acceleration. The increased torque generated by the electric motor and the ability to adjust it with extreme precision ensures even greater four-wheeldrive capability on any terrain. Thanks to the plug-in hybrid electric technology, CO2 emissions are lower than 50g/km in hybrid mode and it will return 123-124mpg. Performancewise, the Renegade 4xe has a top speed of 124mph.
Special editions
Shout out to my X

The existing HST gains another powerful engine option with a new D350 diesel. The D350 is just one of the latest generation of Land Rover’s new six-cylinder Ingenium diesel engines. They bring 48V MildHybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) diesel technology to the Range Rover Sport for the first time and are RDE2-certified. Developed in-house, the new in-line engine is available in D300 and D350 variants, with power outputs ranging from 300PS (221kW) to 350PS (258kW). They replace the V6 and V8 diesels. The special editions are available to order now with prices starting at £65,295.
The BMW iX3 – the first fully electric-powered BMW X model – combines emissions-free travel, dynamic handling and performance with the comfort, functionality and spaciousness that customers would expect of a BMW. The advances achieved since the market launch of the BMW i3 in 2013 now culminate in the company’s fifthgeneration eDrive technology which comprises of a highly efficient electric motor, optimised energy density high-voltage battery and a high charging capacity. The new BMW iX3 has been designed for the current requirements of the electric vehicle market and with future advances in mind. BMW eDrive technology provides an outstanding basis for economically sustainable applications in volume production models. It will be available from next summer. www.sheffieldvibe.com 129
