47 Thorpe House Rise, Norton Lees S8 £175,000

Nothing to worry about Whether you’re a first time buyer or are looking to take further steps up the property ladder, Saxton Mee can guide you through the whole buying process with ease.

I

t is often said that the two of the most stressful times in a person’s life come from getting married or moving house, yet often the two events occur within a short timeframe. With the commitment involved, strong emotional ties and heavy financial investment, there is no wonder this can be a stressful time. There is one way in which to minimise the stress in both situations and that is to allow experts to assist. This is particularly true when it comes to buying a house. Whether it is your first step onto the property ladder or your first purchase together, estate agents are on hand to provide you with advice every step of the way and guide you through the process from start to finish. James Mee, Managing Director at Saxton Mee Estate Agents, comments: “We pride ourselves in offering a friendly and personal service. We have the largest selection of properties locally and the most experienced, knowledgeable team, dedicated to not only our property sellers but also our buyers. “We understand the importance of building a relationship with both parties from the outset, from finding you your dream home to arranging your viewings, guiding you through the offer process and assisting the sale through to completion, which is why we are proud to have a fall through rate of less than ten per cent (compared with the

WESTSIDE 16

national average of 30 per cent).” Before you can purchase your dream home, it is important to know how you are going to fund it. James Mee advises getting the right financial advice at the start can ensure you know how much you can afford from the outset. There were many changes to mortgage regulations and lending criteria in 2014 and in order to avoid disappointment it is strongly advised to seek independent financial advice prior to looking for a property. This will ensure you know exactly how much you can borrow and how much deposit you will require. Saxton Mee work in association with McKenzie Finance, a leading team of completely independent financial advisors who can find you the perfect mortgage by searching the whole of the mortgage market, with deposits as low as five per cent and which fits with your personal situation. They can also discuss the Government-backed Help to Buy Scheme and whether you would be eligible for this. Setting up home together is an exciting time but it can bring its challenges. One of you, or even both, may have existing properties and it is useful to seek both financial advice and the advice of an estate agent to discuss either renting or selling, to ensure you make the right decision for you. It is also good to use the services of experts that are recommended by others.

Saxton Mee are proud of their excellent testimonials from buyers and sellers and are also proud to work with reputable, local companies with the same message as themselves, offering the best in customer service with a personal and professional approach. They can recommend conveyancing solicitors and even removal companies ensuring you receive the best possible price, for the best possible service, giving you one less thing to worry about. For further information on any of Saxton Mee’s services contact them now on 0114 268 3241, email bannercross@saxtonmee.co.uk or visit their brand new website, www.saxtonmee.co.uk

WHITEHORNES SHEFFIELDS FASTEST GROWING INDEPENDENT ESTATE AGENT The new year has started at the same pace as 2014 finished with an increase in volume of sales in comparison with the same time last year. New stock is attracting record levels of interest as we continue to see a shift away from this traditionally quiet time of the year. This is due in part to more clients being internet savvy and searching for properties on line and booking viewings from the comfort of their own homes. We have taken advantage of this growing trend by incorporating all multi-media tools available to us to maximise properties exposure on the internet including Rightmove, Face Book, Twitter and Pinterest. We are achieving the asking price, and above, in record time as demand continues to out-strip supply.

SPEAKING ABOUT PROPERTY – SPEAK TO THE EXPERTS Established in 2005 by husband & wife team Ian & Suzanne Whitehorne the company was developed to lead the field in outstanding customer service and client satisfaction. It remains today one of the few truly independent family run estate agents in the area. From our existing premises in Woodseats to our new one at Bannercross, we continue to build long-term relationships with the local community. Going from strength to strength our team of highly skilled professionals provide local knowledge and expertise across a broad range of property related matters from selling, buying, renting, letting, new homes & the very best in independent mortgage advice. Setting the benchmark Redbrik offer a fresh approach to selling your home. Find out what they can do for you.

F

irst there was the office…. Then the distinctive red, white and black sale boards started to appear across south west Sheffield. Now the name Redbrik Estate Agency is well and truly established as a favourite for sellers and purchasers alike in Millhouses, Totley, Dore, Bradway, Ecclesall, Fulwood, Crosspool and many other parts of the Hallam and Heeley areas. Nearly a year on from the launch of its contemporary Sheffield office in the former British Hairways salon at Abbeydale Road, Millhouses (next to the post office), Redbrik has returned some impressive figures that are making a real impression with house owners.

The Redbrik story in numbers:

10 118 1,438 11 487 3.7

Months of trading Offers accepted Viewings booked

Viewings per property Offers received

Offers per property

The Redbrik team knows how to market a property for sale and get results – an average of 11 viewings per property and, remarkably an average of nearly four offers per property. At its core – an honest, jargon-free approach underpinned by great customer service and innovative marketing. Redbrik has broken new ground in the leafy suburbs of Sheffield, achieving phenomenal growth in a saturated market. Leading the team are founding directors

WESTSIDE 20

Mark Ross

Mark Ross and Julie Bulheller. The pair, both experienced in the competitive world of estate agencies, had decided it was the right time to fill a gap in the market for an independent agency which had customer’s needs at its heart rather than sales targets. New director Michael Parry heads up Redbrik’s Millhouses office, whilst well-known property figure Jed Furniss is now on board as a consultant, specialising in property sales in the south west of the city and the Peak District. Michael, whose extensive knowledge of Sheffield is coupled with expertise gained from his time working at a leading London agency, is the key figure at Millhouses where he is supported by Kirstie Snape, Louise Bolton and David Atterton. Michael said: “The philosophy for Redbrik has always been a simple one: offer customers a fresh approach to selling their home through great marketing and dedicated customer service.” Mark commented: “Innovation is fundamental. The website (www.redbrik.co.uk) for example provides a fully responsive platform to beautifully showcase properties alongside unique features, such as photo plans, which aid and enhance the buying experience.” Founding director Julie Bulheller said: “Less than two years in, we are now setting the benchmark for the future of estate agency across Sheffield and North Derbyshire”. And Redbrik can back it up with an impressive set of sales statistics. Just look at the story in South West Sheffield (right): The team at Redbrik º consisting of 15 full-time staff and four full-time freelancers – embody the Redbrik style – professional, experienced, yet friendly and relaxed (even the dress code, where suits and ties are banned). Redbrik has been so well received that it is expanding into Crystal Peaks, Sheffield where it is opening its third branch in March.

The last hurrah

From gastronomic tours to relaxing spa retreats, Fiona Barber looks at the changing face of the stag and hen do.

T

he days of grooms-to-be waking up minus clothes or dignity and of brides-to-be decorated with learner plates, tiaras and garters are long gone. Over the last decade traditional stag and hen parties – the debauched soirées of

brides and grooms – have become more sophisticated and less booze based. For ladies the industry has even invented a new phrase for it: a swan party. With more hens and stags opting for a weekend of relaxation, or adventure and entertainment, instead of a night of drunken

table dancing, the stakes are higher than ever. Organising the event in question comes with immense pressure. So if you are feeling the strain or are stuck for ideas, then read on for Westside’s suggestions of how to keep your stags, hens, brides and grooms entertained on the trip of a lifetime.

Spas If relaxing in a Jacuzzi ‘til you wrinkle like a prune, being slathered in mud, and massaged until you’re knot-free is your idea of heaven – then a spa break is the answer. Despite Croatia being well known for its gorgeous coastlines and historical past, hidden away in the hills are numerous toplice – thermal spas or hot springs. Though popular year round, thermal spas are especially appropriate once the temperature falls, inviting you to seek relief from the cold, in warm, health-boosting pools. When you’re tired of soaking, enjoy a healing mud treatment. This mineral-enriched mud, with a temperature of about 40 degrees is thickly spread over the body and after several minutes, is washed off with mineral water. If you’re not a fan of the mud there are plenty other massages and spa treatments to choose from. www.wellbeingescapes.com thehealthyholidaycompany.co.uk

Skiing For those looking for a bit of action – no not that kind – hitting the slopes could be the perfect way to spend the days, before returning to a luxurious chalet. It doesn’t matter if some members of the group have never skied before – classes are available to get to grips with the basic skills and the more experienced in the group can help others out – a fantastic way to exercise, bond and have fun. The French Alps have long been a favourite destination for British skiers looking for a luxury ski holiday and with a fine choice of exclusive hotels and sumptuous private chalets, combined with excellent ski opportunities and facilities along with stylish in-resort boutiques and it isn’t hard to see why. On a luxury skiing holiday to France, you can choose from a number of options. Whether you like your skiing to come with plenty of scope and accessibility, such as those of Les Trois Valees, the world’s largest skiing area, and L’ Espace Killy, or you prefer the more varied terrain of places like Chamonix and Megeve, you’ll not be disappointed. The laid-back continental atmosphere certainly adds to the appeal and in true French style the appreciation of fine cuisine and leisurely lunches play an important part of any visit to the region. crystalski.co.uk/luxury-ski-holidays www.elegantresorts.co.uk

Hire an island Finding your own slice of paradise for the perfect stag or hen party is no easy task. Locating a destination that offers plenty of adventure, cool drinks and a good serving of sunshine for a completely exclusive getaway is difficult – but what about hiring an island that is exclusively yours? Think Castaway in Tahiti, first-class luxury in the Bahamas, or enjoy the tropical climate of Florida. Arrive in style in a helicopter, snorkel with tropical fish, enjoy a range of water sports, play tennis. Do whatever you like really, because there’s just you, your party and a few helping hands – like your own private chef – to ensure this is the best possible holiday ever. stagweb.co.uk rent.privateislandsonline.com

Drink For lovers of fine wine, a tasting holiday could be just what you’re looking for. Choose a tour that includes special visits to the cellars of winemakers and be treated to private tastings with the winemakers themselves. Enjoy gourmet and regional food, deliciously matched to the wines. Experience dining as a private guest at a bodega, winery or renowned Bordeaux chateau – one of the ultimate experiences that you can have on a wine tour and be guided by one of the world’s great experts to the ‘unvisitable’ domaines in Burgundy. In France visit the beautiful vineyards of Alsace as well as Rhone or Burgundy, and drink luxurious bubbles in Champagne. In Italy, visit top growers in Trentino, Sicily or Tuscany. Or perhaps you’d rather go to Chile, look at the origin of wine in Georgia, or explore Barolo’s cru vineyards on a vineyard walk in Piedmonte. Wherever you go, you’re sure to discover and experience a new side of wine you never knew existed. You’ll return home a master of smelling and swilling, and will be able to impress friends with your knowledge on food and wine matching. winetours.co.uk grapeescapes.net

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Eat If food needs to take centre stage, a gourmet holiday – where you’ll discover how some mouth-watering ingredients are produced, taste regional specialities and explore the delights of gourmet restaurants – is ideal. Visit producers of local speciality food and gain an insight into how they are made or found. Grasp the rare opportunity to go truffle hunting in Piedmonte. As well as tasting the produce, don’t forget to buy some goodies to take home in order to be able to re-create some of these wonderful flavours in your own kitchens. At meals taste the best regional wines that match the food. Gourmet tours don’t necessarily mean an endless stream of highclass restaurants – it can equally be excellent fresh, local produce prepared in a traditional way. activegourmetholidays.com gourmetontour.com

The icing on your day As the centre-piece of your wedding, getting your cake right should be high on your list of priorities. We spoke to expert designer Rachel Edwards.

F

rom finding the perfect dress to selecting the flowers and agonising over the seating plan, a lot of time and thought goes in to planning a wedding. And many things have changed since women first prepared a ‘bottom drawer’ for marriage. One of the key parts of the big day to undergo a transformation has to be the wedding cake. Traditionally a fruitcake with marzipan and royal icing, wedding cakes now come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colours with intricate designs and themes. Some couples choose to have two cakes (think ‘his and hers’ for mismatched tastes) and many now have a different type of cake for each tier with fruitcake, chocolate, lemon, coffee and vanilla to name just a few of the combinations. Once relegated to a corner of the room while everyone enjoyed the party, these beautiful works of sugar art now take centre stage at a wedding reception. It has become increasingly popular to follow the American trend of having a dessert table, where the cake is surrounded by other desserts such as cupcakes, cookies or sweets, which are intended to dress the cake and enhance the whole experience. But how do you design the perfect wedding cake? A professional cake designer takes the time to get to know every client, in order to create a truly bespoke cake. They usually start with a consultation to get to know the couple and tap in to their likes, tastes and thoughts for the wedding. Award-winning cake designer Rachel Edwards explains: “A couple will have usually already chosen a colour theme for their wedding and might have also organised the flowers and chosen a wedding dress, so they will have an idea of what they are looking for. “They usually bring a scrapbook or sketches with them or many like to show me their ideas on Pinterest. It is really important to get to know the couple so that you can create the right cake for them. I never repeat my designs so each cake is completely unique,

Words: Hannah Pearson Photography: www.shoot-lifestyle.co.uk which makes my job very interesting.” Rachel’s favourite clients are those who have a general idea of what they would like but give her complete freedom and artistic licence to interpret their vision and bring it to life. “One of my favourite designs was a duck egg blue wedding cake with delicate beading. It really was something different. The colour was gorgeous and the cake was designed to be the bride’s ‘something blue’. It was also made in an unusual oval shape to resemble a vintage jewellery box. “For another wedding cake, I had my first attempt at making sugar orchids. They are so tricky but when you get them right they look stunning. People couldn’t believe they weren’t real flowers!” It is hard to believe that someone so talented stumbled across a career in cake design by mistake. Rachel initially trained as an interior designer but after having children she wanted a career where she could work from home. “I was at my son’s play group one afternoon when I noticed a cake decorating book on the side. I thought it would be a nice idea to make his birthday cake so I had a look and chose a Thomas the Tank Engine design. “I phoned The Sheffield College that same day and the following week I started a course in cake decorating! It was a dream come true.” With natural talent and an eye for design, Rachel completed the course with distinctions in cake decoration and sugar flowers and went on to gain an NVQ level three in patisserie. Before she knew it she had built up a successful business and enviable reputation. “I gain the majority of my business through recommendations, so trust and reputation is very important in this industry. I love what I do and I think that comes across. I want every cake to be perfect. I won’t sleep at night if I don’t think it’s right.” Rachel has been featured in national

wedding publications, including photo shoots in Cosmopolitan Bride and Brides magazines, and she has been commissioned to demonstrate new products and ideas for global company Dr. Oetker. She is proud to have worked closely with Chatsworth House for the past five years and she is one of their recommended wedding suppliers. Her cake designs even featured in the BBC documentary ‘Chatsworth’. People travel from near and far to get married in the picturesque Peak District and there is no better venue than the stunning stately home. One couple came all the way from Texas and Rachel was selected to make the cake of their dreams. “It was an extravagant ceremony, with the bride arriving in a horse drawn carriage and the whole family travelled from America to stay in Chatsworth for a week. “Their cake was very intricate with lots of sugar ruffles and they had a dessert table with cake and cookie pops. “The bride had her heart set on having the wedding at Chatsworth and they were the first couple ever to be granted permission to hold their wedding breakfast and have their photos taken in the grand rooms.” Chatsworth House’s wedding fairs are also the perfect place for Rachel to showcase her exceptional talents. The next fair will take place on Saturday 28 February and Sunday 1 March, along with the launch of a new wedding marquee. Rachel has the honour of being chosen to exhibit a wedding cake in the marquee. Her cake will be decorated with a beautiful wild flower design as she is well-known for her exceptional sugar flowers. As her business has grown, Rachel now has her own shop Oh Sugar! By Rachel Edwards on Sharrow Vale Road, which sells all types of cake decorating equipment and supplies. And if you are interested in learning a new skill, Rachel holds cake decorating classes at Oh Sugar! that are suitable for all abilities. Go to www.ohsugarsheffield.co.uk for more information.

A NEW YOU IN 2015 With the award winning non surgical cosmetic treatment

Prices start from

£65.00 per session

G&M Healthcare are the first to offer the award winning Exilis in Sheffield. Exilis Elite delivers lasting and measurable results in this breakthrough non-surgical aesthetic system. Welcome to the future of body shaping, skin tightening and wrinkle reduction! Exilis treatment offers cosmetic improvement without surgery. WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED WITH EXILIS? Virtually any area can be treated thanks to the precisely engineered applicator. Real time skin temperature monitoring means the ability to deliver maximum power to a desired depth without discomfort.

HOW DOES EXILIS WORK? During the session, the Exilis computercontrolled device is guided over the treatment area. You feel a warming sensation as the energy is delivered to the deeper layers of skin. Exilis focuses the energy on the specific treatment areas at the targeted depth of penetration. By causing the collagen supporting tissues to remodel, Exilis stimulates and strengthens the collagen network to improve skin laxity and texture. Exilis is recommended for any patient between the ages of 20 and 70+ who desires cosmetic improvement. THE PROCEDURE We recommend four to six sessions at a rate of one every week. You can have additional treatments every 6 months. Results last up to 12-18 months after the Exilis treatment.

If you’re not a ‘gym person’ you’re perfect for LadyZone Our members are all different ages, shapes and sizes, with varying fitness levels but one important thing in common – the desire to exercise in a non-intimidating, friendly environment that supports them to reach their goals. Susan Kidder lost 2.5 and a half stone using the 30-minute circuit:

When I retired, I decided it was time to do something for myself and finally tackle my weight. At size 20, I was putting pressure on my knees and I felt very unfit. I had never been to a gym before, but plucked up the courage to make an appointment at LadyZone and I’ve never looked back since. I have lost 2 and a half stone and 2 dress sizes so far, and I feel wonderful - healthier, happier, and fitter. I was in New York with my husband at Christmas and I managed to walk all over the city; something I would never have been able to do before joining LadyZone.

The support you get from the staff is fantastic and as soon as you have been to LadyZone once, you will already look forward to going back.

I decided I had to do something about my weight before the menopause and because of my busy job as a social worker, I thought the 30-minute workouts would fit in well with my lifestyle. And they certainly do! I finish work, call in at the gym, and can still be home to cook dinner for my teenagers at a decent time. Jayne Metcalf

I went from a size 16 to a size 10 in just a few months and feel so much better. I used to hate having my photo taken but I love getting ready for nights out now and my confidence has soared. Jaki Blackshaw

I’ve lost 5 stone 9lb and feel amazing. You wouldn’t believe the difference that 30 minutes can make. The staff are all so friendly and new members are always made to feel so welcome by everyone else. Liz Chipchase

Breathtaking results Taking inspiration from their travels, a Sheffield couple set about transforming their home with a little help from two expert local companies.

W

hen Jim and Adrienne Hunt returned to Whirlow after five years abroad, they had a vision that would transform their beautiful – though dated – Whirlowdale Rise home into something truly spectacular. After much research, they hired two local companies to turn their dream design into a reality. The results, we’re sure you’ll agree, are breathtaking. As the couple explain here, it was the excellent working relationship that was built between them, Ahmed Choudhry of Nada Architects and James Clarke of Sheffield Development Properties that ensured the project was such a success. “We wanted a modern but cosy look and they have achieved that extremely well. It works perfectly for us and we have never regretted choosing James and Ahmed. “In total, they have completed an orangery-style extension with bifold doors and a glass atrium roof; installed insulated, tinted windows; subdivided the former kitchen into a utility room and a study; transformed the downstairs cloakroom and the main bathroom and landscaped the garden. “The atrium roof is our favourite part.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

We thought after moving from New Zealand we would miss the sun and the daylight but, even when it’s dull outside, the kitchen is wonderfully light. It’s so well insulated that it’s a steady temperature even if it’s really hot or really cold outside. “The team that completed the work was great – the workmen were tidy, helpful and courteous. James even visited our immediate neighbours to explain about the work and apologise for the disruption before they began. “It was a big project when we started and it grew even bigger as there were other rooms we decided to do along the way, but nothing phased James and Ahmed. They just absorbed the new work into their timetable and got on with it. “James certainly has a ‘can do’ attitude and nothing is too much trouble. We were able to have open discussions and negotiate successfully as a result of the strong working relationship we built up. “Ahmed not only worked really closely with us throughout the design process – including even the finest details – but he also seamlessly obtained the planning and building regulations approval on our behalf. “Everything was done with a good

balance of respect and humour and every single person that came to the house showed consideration for the fact that we were living here while they were conducting the work. “We are delighted with the final outcome and our friends, family and neighbours are equally impressed. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the services of both Ahmed and James.” Sheffield Development Properties Office S2,Works 57, 57 Chippinghouse Road, Sheffield, S8 0ZF Tel: 0114 438 7536 Mobile: 07957 883509 Email: info@sheffielddevelopmentproperties.co.uk www.sheffielddevelopmentproperties.co.uk Nada Architects Ltd Tel: 0114 345 0310 Mobile: 07974 735527 Email: info@nadaarchitects.com www.nadaarchitects.com

WESTSIDEINTERVIEW

PETER STRINGFELLOW He gained fame as Sheffield’s legendary ‘King of Clubs’ – but at 74, is he still a lothario in leopard-print? Adam Kay ventured to Soho to find out…

I

see the mullet before I see anything else. I am in Soho to interview Peter Stringfellow. It is 2.52pm and the doors of his Angels nightclub are barred shut – it will be six hours before they open to punters eager to see female flesh and drink expensive drinks. But I knock and explain who I am, and the receptionist lets me in. She tells me to take a seat, motioning to a table to the left of the entrance. Around it is a red velvet throne and two chairs upholstered in leopard-print. Obviously! After a short wait I’m ushered through the club (more red velvet; even more leopard-print) to the office at the back. It is relatively cramped, but sleek; like the headquarters of a trendy advertising firm. In the middle is a separate office, partitioned off from the rest with glass panels. There is a frosting effect across the centre of the glass, meaning I can’t see the face of who’s inside. But lo, what’s that poking over the top? Why, it’s that unmistakable silver mane! * We all think we know Peter Stringfellow: the hair, the leopard-print, the scores of nubile girls in his clubs and on his arm. But he is 74 now – what is he really like these days? How much of his lothario persona is actually true to life? “Absolutely none,” he laughs. “I

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

have no leopard-skin G-strings. Damn!” He is, he claims, a reformed character: he doesn’t drink (apart from the occasional glass of pinot grigio with food), and is happily married with a baby daughter (more about that later). His only interests nowadays are his family and his business. Indeed, it’s easy to forget that Peter Stringfellow is, above and beyond everything else, a hugely successful businessman (he prefers ‘entrepreneur’). He has made millions from his nightclubs – first the music venues in his native Sheffield which played host to the likes of The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, now his Soho nightspots where ‘adult entertainment’ is the order of the day. His has been a long and lucrative career, and it shows no sign of stopping any time soon. In fact in his seventies Peter is striking out anew once more, with a plan to expand the Stringfellows brand across Europe. “I’m in a recognised, understandable licensing deal, which is the future for me,” he says. The first of these new branded clubs opened in Paris in late 2014. “These countries have become more capitalistic and more westernised than they’ve ever been. So the [Stringfellows] name, in my opinion, fits in all the capital cities: Prague, for instance, Budapest…” Â Pictures courtesy Lorna Newman

WESTSIDEINTERVIEW It’s a bold move, but then Peter Stringfellow is no shrinking violet. He may have put the boozing and womanising behind him, but the energy, the megawatt charisma for which he’s famous, remains firmly in place. During our chat, he punctuates most sentences with a hearty, capital-letter laugh (“HA HA HA!”), and regularly breaks into song, and impressions of the many celebrities he knows (his Janet StreetPorter is hilarious). Celebrities loom large in Peter’s world. The wall of his little office is filled with pictures of him hangin’ out with the stars, at his clubs and elsewhere. He continually drifts off from conversation to point them out and tell me the story behind them. Princess Diana, Charlie Sheen (“we forged a very good friendship, but we only knew each other when we were drunk!”), Ginger Rogers, Simon Cowell (“good old Simon, comes to the club a lot, fabulous guy”)… the famous names come thick and fast – so many, clanging around me like anvils, that I worry the floor will fall through. * Peter James Stringfellow was born in Sheffield in 1940, growing up in the suburb of Pitsmoor (“When people say ‘what was Pitsmoor like?’… the name described it quite adequately. HA HA HA HA!”). The family were poor, he says: their house was cold and cramped; the only toilet was outdoors. His memories of Sheffield are fond, though: he still has family in the city, and visits when he gets the chance. The young Peter struggled at school, due to what was later diagnosed as mild dyslexia. As a result, the first signs of his extrovert persona emerged. He says: “I found myself trying to be a joker in the class to lift myself up from being the dumbest kid in the class to a little bit more than that.” He left school at 15 and took on a series of odd jobs, including cinema projectionist and apprentice mechanic, before his father persuaded him to sign up for the merchant navy. Peter sailed the world, his eyes opened wide by the gleaming skyscrapers and wellto-do citizens of New York. Peter’s nascent Jack-the-lad attitude was soon to land him in trouble, changing his life’s direction in the process. Now back in Sheffield and working for an upholstery firm, he began stealing carpets from the company’s warehouse to sell on the side for extra profit. He was promptly discovered and arrested, and served six weeks at Her Majesty’s pleasure as a result. After being released from prison Peter struggled to find work, but an outing to Chesterfield with younger brother Geoffrey provided the inspiration for a new career path. Attending a performance by Johnny Tempest and the Cadillacs, the elder Stringfellow felt he could make a success of putting on gigs of his own. Shortly after, he began laying the foundations of his nightclub empire, and set about building for himself the life he’d first glimpsed during that merchant navy trip to New York. *

and beyond. First was the Black Cat, in St Aidan’s church hall on City Road. Then came the Blue Moon, and in the mid-Sixties the King Mojo, which was later given a very groovy psychedelic paint job. As a promoter and booker, he brought so many iconic acts to the city that it’d be quicker to name the ones that didn’t play for him. The Kinks, The Who (personal favourites of his), Tina Turner and Elton John are just a few of the ones who did. The seventies saw an expansion into other cities – first Leeds, then Manchester – and then in 1980 a move to London, with the opening of Stringfellows in Covent Garden. Stringfellows quickly became the place to see and be seen, thanks largely to Peter’s reputation from his Sheffield days. The stars who had played for him years before – Marvin Gaye, Elton – stopped by the new club whenever they were in town. Stringfellows was instantly transformed into the latest hip celebrity hangout, and Peter’s fame was assured. Given Peter’s love of the US, sealed in his merchant navy days, it was inevitable he would open clubs across the pond. Soon enough he did, and the Stringfellows clubs in New York, Miami and Beverly Hills were great successes, frequented by Hollywood stars and music legends alike. But the good times in America weren’t to last. An economic crash there at the end of the eighties forced Peter to close his stateside clubs – and allegedly led to an unsavoury run-in with the Mafia. He retreated to England with the tail of his mullet between his legs.

“I’m still the only guy that’s had a club in Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, London, Miami, New York and Beverly Hills. Nobody else has done that.”

“I’m called ‘King of Clubs’,” says Peter. “I’m still the only guy that’s had a club in Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester, London, Miami, New York and Beverly Hills, and owned all of them. Nobody else has done that.” Peter’s early clubs have become the stuff of legend, in Sheffield

WESTSIDE 68

Peter bounced back, of course. And it was another eye-opening experience in the States which helped him turn his fortunes back around: a visit to a gentlemen’s club. “A girl had come up to me at the side of the stage and said ‘Can I dance for you?’ I said ‘Sure!’” he says. “She said ‘It’s ten dollars a dance.’ ‘Fine, I’ll have one.’ Three hundred and fifty dollars later, I was still giving her ten dollar bills. HA HA HA HA HA!” Ever the entrepreneur, Peter felt that ‘adult entertainment’ was another venture he could make work for him, and he soon introduced it to Stringfellows in London. It was an instant success, and before long he became the first club owner to secure a fully nude licence from Westminster Council. Gentlemen’s clubs will always be a controversial topic, with many (including this writer) feeling they are exploitative and promote sexual objectification. For his part, Peter insists his clubs are thoroughly classy, aimed at highflyers rather than horny teenagers. He also says the girls who perform in his venues are not ‘strippers’ or ‘lap-dancers,’ but rather ‘entertainers.’ *

“I have been ecstatically happy many, many times in my life, but I can’t honestly say I’ve been any happier than I am now.”

Of course, the move into adult entertainment did nothing to alter the public perception of Peter – based on years of appearances in the tabloid columns – as a sleazy, silk-shirted womaniser. Neither did his propensity for dating dancers from his clubs, most of them half his age. But he’s different now, he says. It’s true that today, dressed in casual trousers and a polo shirt, he doesn’t look much like the lothario one imagines (although I must report that all the buttons on the shirt are undone to reveal a thatch of chest hair). And while cynics rolled their eyes in 2009 when he married Bella Wright – a ballet dancer some 42 years his junior – Peter insists it isn’t history repeating itself. “I have been ecstatically happy many, many times in my life, but I can’t honestly say I’ve been any happier than I am now,” he says. “I have a 16 month old daughter who is everything, and my gorgeous wife who I love – she loves me too, for some unknown reason! We’re a great little team.” His decision to become a father again at 72 (he has a daughter, Karen, and a son, Scott, from previous marriages) attracted further snorts of derision. Again, Peter has a rebuttal to the critics. “I’ve enjoyed my family life so much in the past I wanna do it again,” he shrugs. “People who have something against that probably say ‘Well, it’s not very fair because you’re going to die and leave your little girl with no father.’ But she’ll have her mother, and she’ll have a memory of a doting father.” He puts great emphasis on the word ‘doting’. * Peter Stringfellow can be a difficult man to read. For one thing, there are those meandering anecdotes. And while his answers certainly aren’t rehearsed, his 50 years in showbiz mean he knows how to talk to journalists like me and give the answers he thinks I want (he makes sure to frequently address me by name, and will often preface the anecdotes with “Here’s a story for you,” as if to make sure I get it down). But when talking of his love for his new family, he seems completely sincere. He tells me we have to wrap the interview up

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

because he’s cooking a dinner for his wife and some friends later. These days, it seems, Peter Stringfellow is more domestic god than love god. Many of the questions I’d wanted to ask – has he really, as he’s claimed in the past, slept with 2,000 women? Why, oh why the obsession with leopard-print? – are sadly left unanswered. But there’s time for just one more: would he ever retire? “The answer to that one, Adam, is retire from what? To what?” he says. “In a way I am retired.” He explains how he used to spend every night in one of his clubs: Friday in London, to New York by Concorde, then the next week Miami, the next day Beverly Hills. His life now is comparatively sedate: he splits his time between London and his property in Mallorca. “I would be a lot richer today had I not enjoyed my business so much,” he says. “Richard Branson jumps out of an aeroplane every now and again, but basically he’s a businessman. Me? No. I wanna be onstage with these stars, I wanna meet up with them, I wanna be Peter Stringfellow.” And having spent an afternoon in his company, I think I wanna be Peter Stringfellow too. I may not approve of his line of work, but the man himself is friendly, hungry for success even at 74, and a total hoot to talk to. And when I think about his life nowadays, with his wife and child and his millions in the bank, it’s all rather appealing. So as I walk back out into Soho, I run my fingers through my imaginary mullet, and unbutton my shirt just a little bit further than I had before. www.stringfellows.co.uk

Meeting Peter Andre was 'insania', say Dronfield Slimming World consultants A group of Slimming World consultants says meeting singer and TV presenter Peter Andre was the perfect way to get set for a super-slimming start to 2015. The team, which runs weekly Slimming World groups in Dronfield, was thrilled to get a chance to cuddle up to Peter when he cohosted the Slimming World Awards with the organisation’s chair and founder Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE. Peter said: “Being in the public eye, there’s a lot of scrutiny and if you put on even a pound or two the magazines and newspapers are extremely quick to point it out, so I’ve always tried to take care of myself and watch my weight. However, since becoming a dad I’ve realised it’s about more than just looking good; it’s much more important to me that I’m fit and healthy and setting a good example to my children. At the awards I met lots of people who’ve lost incredible amounts of weight and it has completely transformed

Cubana gets the Guevara stamp of authenticity The next best thing to Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara has given her blessing to Sheffield’s renowned Cuban bar and tapas restaurant, Cubana. Che’s eldest daughter, Dr Aleida Guevara, dined as a special guest of the Leopold Square venue as part of her visit to the city in December. Cubana’s Adrian Bagnoli said: “Having a visit from Che Guevara’s daughter really is the ultimate accolade for us. The fact that her advisors chose us as the place for her to eat is a real honour. It was a pleasure to welcome her and I hope Cubana’s Havana-inspired decor reminded her of home.”

Major expansion for Westbourne School Westbourne School has entered 2015 with a major expansion project to meet increasing demand. The city’s only co-educational independent school for three to 16-year-olds will soon open a new building in Westbourne Road, creating seven new classrooms for use by both senior and junior school pupils. The school’s hugely successful Pre-School facilities have also expanded. “One of the main reasons we went ahead with the Pre-School was because we had received so many requests from parents,” said Headmaster John Hicks. “We created a valuable new service for busy mums and dads, especially those who already have older children at Westbourne, and now we are having to respond again to demand. Along with the launch of our new building we can already see that 2015 is going to be an extremely exciting year for us.”

RFU vice-president kicks off new era for Sheffield Tigers The highest rugby club pitch in England, which can be found at Sheffield Tigers RUFC, has benefitted from a £90,000 investment to improve its drainage and to create more car parking space. Funded by Sport England, Sheffield Town Trust and supporters, the reconditioned pitch and new park area were opened officially by Yorkshire RFU senior vice president, Brian Umpleby (pictured). He said: “The top pitch has tended to be boggy. Now, with the expert drainage, the club should get more people to play rugby and keep them playing longer.” The work was carried out by Pugh-Lewis Ltd, a specialist contractor in sports field drainage and landscaping. The parking space was ‘green’ to respect the natural beauty in which the club is situated, with interlinked polycarbonate supports sitting beneath the grass to allow vehicles to park in all weathers.

Homeless centre on the road to success thanks to Sheffield car dealer

Dream interiors from Hancock & Read

Sheffield dealership and service centre Mike Brewer Motors helped to spread some Christmas cheer by donating over £8,000 to St Wilfrid’s Centre. Staff at the centre, which has been supporting the homeless, vulnerable and socially excluded of Sheffield for the last 24 years, were delighted with the donation from Bramall Lane neighbours Mike Brewer Motors. TV presenter Mike Brewer was in America, filming the next season of Wheeler Dealers so colleague John Tustin was on hand to deliver the cheque. He said: “This is the first time we have been able to make such a sizeable donation, and we were keen to donate to a charity that works locally. When we visited, we were amazed at the amount of help they provide to those who need it, and all without any government funding. The fact that they are continuing to

look for ways to do more is inspirational. We’re very proud to help – especially at this time of year – a charity that not only provides such great services, but also does so from right across the street from our site!” Kevin Bradley, director at St Wilfrid’s Centre, added: “It is fantastic to be chosen to receive such a valuable donation, and we are very grateful to Mike Brewer Motors. This money will enable us to improve the services that we offer to vulnerable people in Sheffield.” If you would like to donate to St Wilfrid’s Centre, visit www.stwilfrids centre.org Or donate through www.justgiving.com/stwilfridscentre. Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees

WS Eating Out

A dazzling experience Richard Smith embarks on a ‘taste adventure’ at Losehill House Hotel & Spa.

B

ubbles, gel, ash, soil, clouds (OK, I made the last one up) – you’d could be forgiven for thinking that it’s all gone a bit Willy Wonka in the kitchen at the Losehill House Hotel. It’s food with the appliance of science. A dazzling exhibition of skill and technique employed in the service of flavour from a kitchen at the top of its game. Food writers often talk about things ‘bursting’ with flavour when what they really mean is that what they’ve eaten is quite tasty. But at Losehill, it is literally true; perfect jelly cubes release intense honey hits, blood orange globules go off on the tongue like little citrus-sy bombs. And a blackcurrant bubble tastes like somebody squeezed a whole bottle of cassis and a bush-ful of fruit into one perfectly formed and delicious dollop. And they are just the accompaniments. At the heart of each dish are top quality ingredients perfectly cooked and presented in a way that makes each course an adventure in taste. Take my starter for instance. On the face of it, a cheesy and onion toasty with a splash of Henderson’s Relish. Except here the cheesy bit came in the form of an air-light mousse overlaid with a thin translucent film of Hendo’s-tinged tanginess and lent a lightly crunchy texture by onion ‘ash’.

WESTSIDE 84

Across the table, a meaty scallop and mussels came in an intense broth – the sea in a bowl. For mains, the oceanic theme was maintained by a creamy fillet of sweet sea bream cooked to perfection and whose pale flesh was set off by glossy purple potato gnocchi. A vertical finger of hotpot potato beckoned me to some of the best lamb I’ve ever had – perfectly pink and tender rump and meltingly soft braised shoulder, set off by a blob of salty, cheese-y goat’s curd. Blackcurrant cheesecake and liquorice ice cream – along with that blackcurrant bubblebomb – and a delicately-flavoured chocolate and lime mousse made a memorable end to a memorable evening. The a la carte menu changes daily with six choices for each course and the price includes canapés in the hotel’s stylish lounge and bar. There is also a seven-course Taste of Losehill menu for a tenner extra, although if you wanted to indulge in the specially-chosen flight of wines that comes with it (£22.50) you might want to stay overnight in one of the hotel’s 23 en-suite bedrooms and take advantage of the spa facilities while you are at it. Hidden away up a narrow lane in a stunning Peak District setting, Losehill House bills itself as the best-kept secret in the Peak District. Well, now the secret’s out. Pass it on.

What we ate: Three-course a la carte menu (including canapés) £39.50 Starters Blue cheese mousse with Henderson’s jelly, Lord Marples toast and onion ash Pan-seared scallop with mussels, samphire, sea herbs and shellfish broth Mains Rump and braised shoulder of lamb with hotpot potato, broccoli, red cabbage and goat’s curd Fillet of sea bream with purple potato gnocchi, grilled baby artichoke, samphire and courgette purée Desserts Blackcurrant cheesecake with liquorice ice cream, blackcurrant bubble and pistachio crumb White chocolate and lime mousse with honeycomb, Sheffield honey jelly, rice and lime gel Drinks Vina Palaciega Rioja Blanco, £8 (175ml) Costa Vera Merlot, £6 (175ml) Losehill House Hotel Losehill Lane, Edale Road, Hope Valley, S33 6AF Tel 01433 621219 www.losehillhouse.co.uk

s a howling gale attempted to wreak havoc with the Derbyshire countryside, and tall trees swayed alarmingly beside twisty unlit roads, it occurred to me that we might be in for a quiet one. Who on earth goes out on a night like this? I discovered the answer as soon as we opened the door and stepped into the comforting old school charm of the Packhorse Inn in Little Longstone. Lots of people do! With a fire roaring in the grate and a bar packed with cheery drinkers and buzzing with chat, this was immediately ticking a lot of boxes as the quintessential country pub. The Packhorse is a familiar venue for me. Just a few hundred yards from Monsal Head, it is ideally set in the heart of some glorious walking country, and I’ve rested my muddy boots with a refreshing pint in the lovely secluded beer garden on many occasions over the years. It turns out I only knew half the story... as well as keeping some very good beer, including Black Sheep and a range of the local Thornbridge ales, the food is in good order too. Local farms, bakeries and dairies provide much of the produce. Even rapeseed oil is locally grown and produced in Ashford in the Water to produce a menu that is a good mix of comforting classics and more quirky dishes, such as a tapas menu that features beef dripping and pork pie.

WESTSIDE 86

The Packhorse is dog friendly, and there are plenty of stuffed beasts in glass cases or hanging on walls too. I took a seat beside that welcoming fire and sampled a fine pint of Black Sheep, early qualms decisively eased. For starters, the soup of the day - onion and sage - was just as thick and flavoursome as I had hoped. Meanwhile, my companion’s pan-seared scallops, attractively presented in the shell, were nicely seared and perfectly cooked. My main of roast venison haunch from Round Green Farm was lean, tender and delicious. Accompaniments of sweet potato and kale were ideal and the whole plateful was unified by a gloriously deep and rich port and chocolate sauce. Meanwhile, across the table a ribeye steak from Critchlow’s Farm Shop came medium rare and met with instant approval, as did the excellent homemade chips. With rocket salad and peppercorn sauce on the side, this was comfort food at its best. My sweet tooth was satisfied by a fine white chocolate and pear cheesecake, not too sweet and with a lovely crisp biscuit base. I also did my bit to help out with a splendid Hartington Cheese Shop selection with crackers, home made chutney and toasted walnuts. With house wines several cuts above your standard pub choice, the Packhorse Inn is definitely worth taking a drive on the wild side for.

pera and Ballet International present Verdi’s La Traviata, a tragic tale of searing passion and memorable music, and we have joined forces with Sheffield City Hall to offer one lucky a reader a pair of tickets to the headline show on Tuesday 17 March. The Ellen Kent production is an outstanding interpretation of one of the most popular love stories of the 19th century, La Dame aux Camelias. Starring Elena Dee and Alyona Kistenyova, La Traviata is based on a true story and tells of the passionate loves and life of the consumptive courtesan, Violetta. The highlights include Brindisi, the best-known drinking song in opera, the duet Un Di Felice and Violetta’s haunting aria, Addio Del Passato.

This magnificent production boasts sumptuous sets and costumes all in the grand setting of Sheffield City Hall. It is sung in Italian with English surtitles. For more information please visit www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk

WS Eating Out

Harriet Hill enjoys the taste of Italy flavoured with a dash of deepest Derbyshire.

I

t seems that everyone originating from Derbyshire has a real sense of passion when it comes to their home county, and Chris Mapp of the Tickled Trout in Barlow is no exception. Having cooked in Michelin-starred restaurants across the country, he has returned to his roots in order to bring a taste of his experiences to the locals, using regionally sourced ingredients to bring a Derbyshire twist to Italian classics. On entering the restaurant and bar you feel a real homely vibe, and the amount of work that has gone into the renovation of what was once a local pub is evident throughout. The ladies’ loos in particular are a trip into wonderland, and I, for one, would happily have moved in! The lounge area is luxurious, complete with big leather armchairs, a roaring fire and quirky wallpaper illustrating an antique bookshelf. Attention to detail is impressive and there is something to spot wherever you go, whether it’s the water carafes with Tickled Trout motifs, or the oldschool revolving blackboard exhibiting the daily specials. The overall ambiance makes for a highly enjoyable evening. The staff are chatty and welcoming, knowledgeable about the menu, and nothing is too much trouble. The wine list is extensive and the menu offers something to tickle everyone’s fancy, with a wide selection of pizza and pasta dishes. However, the specials are definitely the stars of the show and it is here that Chris’s exceptional culinary experience is most clearly manifested. Menu highlights that had to go untested on this occasion included pumpkin and parmesan velouté; wild sea

WESTSIDE 88

Tickled by the Trout trout, bacon, gnocchi and almonds; and seafood pizza with garlic, crab, smoked mackerel and chilli. We opted for choices from both the main and specials menus, starting with crab croquettes, served with a tangy tomato and red onion salsa which really lifted the dish, and Arancini at the Trout, which was accompanied by a lovely truffle mayonnaise. Main courses continued the impressive standards. Spicy lamb meatballs with linguine pasta were full of flavour with a pleasant kick. There was a generous helping of lamb but, a pleasant change from many pasta dishes, we weren’t overwhemed by monster portions. Day Boat Fish Pasta, the fish of the day, is delivered fresh from Cornwall. On this occasion it was plaice, presented in a castiron casserole dish for a rustic feel. Lifting the lid revealed a sizeable portion of lovingly cooked plaice, sitting on top of a watercress puree and surrounded by mussels, macaroni and vegetables delicately carved into flowers – a pretty touch. We finished off with a stunningly sweet sticky toffee pudding and a spin on a classic, topsy-turvy blueberry, lavender & lemon cheesecake. The latter was presented in a martini glass, with perfectly balanced flavours making for a fun dessert. We rounded off the meal with limoncello and pomegranate liqueur, all of which meant we left with a sweet taste in our mouths. The Tickled Trout is definitely worth a visit and look out in 2015 as Chris is hoping to run some Saturday Morning Kitchen-style cookery demonstrations with the help of his Michelin starred friends.

A

Sharrow Vale Road staple that has been well loved since Ribika and Michael – a Greek couple – first introduced tapas to Sheffield in 1979, The Mediterranean is a true Westside favourite. Last summer, it began a new chapter in its long history with the introduction of two new owners. The restaurant’s former chefs, Rachid El Afif and Abdilkabir Barka, have now taken the reins and continue to deliver the excellent food and impeccable service for which The Mediterranean has long been famous. The many regulars have been thrilled to realise that with the new owners has not come a raft of unnecessary changes. Well, if it ain’t broke… Having heard only good things about this traditional trattoria – and its extensive chalk board of specials – I was anticipating a great evening. And I’m pleased to report that, on all counts, it didn’t disappoint. From the warm greeting at the door – a waiter actually bounded forward to open it and welcome us in from the blustering winds outside – to the wide selection of dishes and, most importantly, the great food, it ticked all the right boxes. A succinct standard menu offers a tempting choice of fish, meat and vegetarian options, but it’s the specials board that really draws your attention. Focused predominantly on fresh fish and seafood, it’s

what makes The Mediterranean stand out from the crowd. My partner’s eye was immediately caught by the crab chowder and within seconds he’d settled on the creamy soup for his starter. Packed with flavour, chunky crab meat and served with a grilled cheese crouton on top, it turned out to be an excellent choice. I’d veered towards the vegetarian options for my starter and couldn’t resist baby aubergines stuffed with an exotic blend of rice, peppers, peas and spices. A wonderful start to the meal. While I put one of the many fresh fish offerings to the test by ordering halibut, my partner ventured inland via the standard menu for his main course, with a roasted duck breast. Stuffed with apricots and stem ginger and served on a bed of caramelised red onions with a port and red wine jus, it was an incredibly well considered dish that worked beautifully. A hearty portion of dauphinoise potatoes and seasonal vegetables, to share, provided the perfect accompaniment. On my side of the table, I marvelled at the great chunk of halibut before me, indulgently smothered in a rich, buttery sauce and resting on a bed of roasted vegetables. Slicing into the generous fillet revealed the fish’s trademark, mouthwateringly snow white flesh, and I could clearly see that it was dishes like this that really cemented The Mediterranean’s long-standing popularity. Desserts of limoncello parfait, served with a sharp basil granita, and a firm crème brûlée complete with raspberry coulis, mango foam and the satisfying burnt sugar topping rounded off the evening in style.
