A CHRISTMAS FOR ALL THE CARE HOME CONTINUES EVENT COMMUNITY AT HAILSHAM CREATED DURING PANDEMIC PARISH CHURCH

I

BY VICAR RORY GRAHAM

F you live in Hailsham parish, you should be receiving an invitation to one of our Christmas services through your door in the coming weeks. Who isn’t excited by piles of presents nestling under a well-lit Christmas tree? Opening those shiny parcels of joy is one of the most exciting things about Christmas. When do you open yours? For many of us, there is the time-honoured Christmas morning ritual of unwrapping presents amid shrieks of delight. Do you know what you are getting this year? Have you been in amongst them, shaking and squeezing and trying to work out what your brother has bought you? The Christmas jackpot is when you give someone a gift which you know they are going to love, because at that moment you aren’t just giving a thing to someone, you are handing over yourself, your thoughtfulness and your care to someone you love. That kind of present doesn’t just say ‘I clicked on the link you sent through,’ it says ‘I know you, I love you and I bought this for you.’ To be on the receiving end of a present like that is almost too good to be true. You feel valued, known, appreciated and loved far beyond the value of the actual gift. At Hailsham Parish Church our Christmas plans are built around the astonishing truth that, in Jesus, God has given us the very best present.

The gift of his Son is a personal present of love to each one of us. We are celebrating this gift with special services and events planned all the way through December and we hope that you will find a number of things you’d like to come to. Our services range from the traditional to the informal, from a candle-lit service of lessons and carols to the ever-popular Christmas Eve Christingle. You’ll be warmly welcomed and we hope you will be able to stay and enjoy a mince pie or two afterwards. We would love to welcome you and the Christingle Services on Christmas Eve are particularly popular — we have three in the afternoon at different times (3pm, 4.30pm and 6pm), so there will be plenty of room for all the family. I look forward to meeting you and sharing this precious gift with you. Wishing you a very joyful Christmas. www.hailshamchurch.org for more details.

A FESTIVE light event is set to continue this month at a Hailsham Care Home following its success during lockdown. Quinnell House, located on Quinnell Drive, started a Festive Light Evening in 2021, to allow families to see each other outdoors during the pandemic, safely. It was so successful, the home decided to make it an annual event. Bianca Wilson from the home said: “Our residents absolutely love to see the magic of the Festive lights all around the garden. Over the years, the outdoor light walk has grown to include raffle prizes, mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, mince pies and Geno’s Java coffee van stopping by for a warm drink. “It symbolises the start of the Christmas season for us. We arrange all the lights in different areas of the garden so that everyone can enjoy them, be it for an outside walk or through the windows. “We make sure everyone has access, all through December. This event has grown so much in the last two years, we are excited to see how it

continues to flourish. One of the home’s residents, Mary, said: “It’s so pretty, you just want to keep looking. Our families enjoy spending time with us and appreciate something different with their loved ones. This year’s Festive light event is due to take place at the home on 8th December.
