BURUNDI

Is the UN Commission of Inquiry on Burundi ‘reigniting war of words’ ahead of 2020 elections? The famous UN Commission of Inquiry pf Burundi has recently issued a chilling warning to the international community that there are ‘disturbing things happening in Burundi’ ahead of the 2020 elections.

The chair of the commission of inquiry on Burundi warns the democratic space in the country is rapidly shrinking. It should be noted that ‘the war of words’ between This Commission and Gitega has amounted to declaring these members of the UN Commission of Inquiry on Burundi ‘persona non-grata’ on Burundi soil. The Senegalese Doudou Diene, a controversial member of this commission has taken another bold step to declare on Tuesday that ‘serious human rights abuses have continued. He says the abuses have a political dimension as they occurred following the May 2018 referendum which amended the constitution’.

“Members of this party are regularly subject to threats, arbitrary arrests and detentions, beatings, even torture,” Diene said. The party itself faces several challenges in conducting basic activities, such as organizing meetings or opening offices.”

The three-member UN Commission has been tasked by the United Nations to investigate the alleged crimes against peaceful demonstrators and opposers to the Burundi government since the outbreak of the Burundi crisis in 2015. THE BIG PICTURE: The UN Commission of Inquiry on Burundi has been at loggerheads with Gitega, the latter accusing the former of ‘concocting false reports’ in order to tarnish the image of Burundi. Gitega always rejects the reports of the UN Commission of Inquiry as ‘untrue’.

Doudou Diene went further by stating that the next 2020 elections cannot be held because of the ‘still ongoing turmoil’. According to a VOA report, Burundi’s ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva, Renovat Tabu, has rejected the report, which he says offers an apocalyptic picture of a plan of destabilization on the eve of the election. The ambassador says the commission has presented no proof that the election could become the scene of a serious deterioration of human rights. Tabu says it is easy to lie when claims cannot be verified and calls the commission report an act of sabotage.

According to a report released, the U.N. com- Officially, it is expected that Gitega will respond mission on Burundi says ‘the country is poised to this latest Diene report on Burundi. for another political crisis when it holds elections next year, that the three-member commission of inquiry says the ruling party is trying to harass and intimidate opponents and creating the conditions for unfair elections’.

Boeing creates a $100 million fund for those affected by the Ethiopian 737 Max crash

Boeing Company announced this Wednesday that it has set aside 100 million US dollars to address family and community needs of those affected by two deadly air crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia last October and this March.

Boeing said the funds are an initial investment to be paid over multiple years to support education, hardship and living expenses of the families of the victims who were killed in the “tragic accidents” of Indonesian Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302. The two air crashes, both involving Boeing 737 Max 8 jets, killed a combined 346 people and led to the global grounding of 737 Max aircraft since March. The aviation giant said it would partner with local governments and nonprofits on community programs and economic development in grieving communities. Boeing said this “initial investment” would be made over several years, reports the Washington Post. Boeing also said it would match any donations its employees made toward these efforts through year’s end.

“We are focused on re-earning that trust and confidence from our customers and the flying public in the months ahead.” Nomi Husain, a Texas-based lawyer representing some of the families of victims of ET 302, said Boeing’s payment “doesn’t come anywhere close to compensating the families for what has been taken from them”. He told the BBC’s transport correspondent Tom Burridge that “some of our clients are not interested in financial compensation at this point” and that Boeing “put profit over safety to get their number-one selling plane to market” – a claim the planemaker strongly denies. Boeing is the target of a US Department of Justice criminal investigation into the development of the 737 MAX, regulatory probes and more than 100 lawsuits by victims’ families. The multiyear payout is in“We know every person who steps aboard dependent of the lawsuits and would have one of our airplanes places their trust in us,” no impact on litigation, a Boeing spokesDennis Muilenburg, the company’s chair- man said. man, president and chief executive, said in a statement.

So, under the guise of protecting his constituents from unfair competition, Njagua recently threatened to personally lead the ejection of all foreign nationals, including the Chinese, Pakistanis, Tanzanians and Ugandans from his constituency. This comes at a time when anti-Chinese sentiments in the country have reached fever pitch. The State through Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i, has implicitly fanned this Sino-hatred. Authorities wanted him behind bars for more days as they put together a case against him. The musician turned politician was arrested outside Parliament following his remarks on foreigners working in Kenya that were termed as xenophobic.

The prosecution told the court that the legislator had made the utterances with a clear intention to incite Kenyans against foreign nationals.Appearing before Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi, Jaguar denied the offence. Some of the witnesses set to testify in the case include officers from the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) and those of the Communications Authority (CA). As Standard media reports, Jaguar has been freed on a cash bail of Sh 500,000 after he denied incitement to violence charges.Jaguar has been in police custody since last week on Wednesday. He was arraigned a day later where the prosecution sought to detain him for 14 days to allow them to complete investigations. While releasing him, the court slated the hearing of his case for September 4, 2019. Jaguar is described as an entrepreneur and a philanthropist, notes the Nation. He has, over the years, established his own enterprises that have now become very lucrative businesses. Besides his music business, Jaguar owns a fleet of personal luxury cars and is known to have investments in real estate as well as the transport and aviation industry.

The statement read, “Since the beginning of the week, one of the topic that hasn’t left the mouth of the public is the rape issue happening everywhere, there has been allegations on men of God and one of the most recent is that of Prophet TB Joshua, the founder of Synagogue church of all nations. SCOAN described the lady as mentally ill in a statement made available media on Tuesday. “A lady, identified as Bisola Johnson has been parading herself as a victim of rape by the man of God, in the light of Biodun Fatoyinbo’s case. “She revealed that she was kept captive in SCOAN for 14 years and was raped for same 14 years by Prophet TB Joshua. ‘In response to this, the church has released a video of the said woman during her first appearance in the church, she made it known in the video that she willingly came to SCOAN for deliverance from the spirit of death and after some time, she vanished. In a part of the video, she is seen saying: “My name is Bisola. I have acted as an enemy of God rather than a friend. And today, I am coming back as a prodigal daughter, so that God will forgive me; so that the Man of God will forgive me and the church, Synagogue, will forgive me…I have been rebelious. When I left the SCOAN, nobody asked me to leave. I am asking God (kneels) to forgive me.”

EVENTS On each anniversary of Independence, President Nkurunziza said, this is an opportunity for all Burundians to take a retrospective look at the past of our country, the difficulties encountered and the durable solutions for the future. Burundi, a country with a flawless administration disturbed by colonizers. Before the arrival of German settlers in 1896, the Head of State recalled that our country was a Garden of Eden where milk and honey flowed, a nation characterized by a flawless administration in the political, economic, social and security areas. The Burundians were united in everything, in the organization of festivals, the sharing of food and work in groups for more production, not to mention that they knew well in the areas of respect for God and their king, livestock, crafts and pharmacopeia for both humans and their domestic animals.

With the arrival of the German settlers, President Nkurunziza reviewed the misfortune of Burundians, including the signature of the Kiganda Treaty by King Mwezi Gisabo; the obligation to give white men milk, eggs and butter; the payment of taxes which enriched Europe; inter-ethnic divisions, looting of Burundian subsoil; the disruption of political, economic and social freedoms. Colonizers destroyed the country’s fundamental values. With the arrival of the Belgians from 1916 to 1962, nothing has changed, Mr. Nkurunziza continued to say. He added that those new settlers even immortalized slavery and destroyed the country’s fundamental values, until 1958 when Prince Louis Rwagasore and his comrades struggled to find the promise of independence. Unfortunately, the Belgian colonists murdered him on October 13, 1961, eight months before the proclamation of independence on July 1, 1962. The presence of the settler remained and even is be-

lieved to partake in the massacres of the innocent in 1965, 1972, 1988, 1993, President Nkurunziza insisted, adding that Burundi had a step forward with the 2005 elections that set up, in the whole country, from the bottom to the top, the democratically elected institutions that have made several achievements including the acquisition of a Constitution, the establishment of national commissions to elucidate all issues of Burundians, the National Development Plan (2018-2027), the construction of economic, social and administrative infrastructures, work in transparency, free health care, the measure to establish a political capital in Gitega (center of the country), the annual grant of an amount of 570,000,000 BIF to communes for the well-being of the people, the financing of the national budget, repatriation of refugees and others. Burundi Head of State highlighted major accomplishments. To demonstrate to the world that the country is independent, well managed by nationals and is doing well, the President of the Republic announced that the government has taken commendable measures such as the suspension of contributions to the 2020 elections except for the volunteers and those who had not yet done so; the increase in funeral expenses in the event of the death of an official, from 124,000 to 800,000 BIF, the establishment of a youth bank, the resumption of annual wages and, if possible, the financial support of pensioners, the elderly and people living with disabilities. The Head of State also said that the new Presidential Palace will bear the name of the valiant and first king of Burundi Ntare Rushatsi, while the Congress House of Gitega will be called “Prince Louis Rwagasore House”. Similarly, the Senate House in Gitega will become “Pierre Ngendandumwe House” in memory of that illustrious former prime minister. Related: Burundi At57: Some Burundi places renamed. In a year, President Nkurunziza promised, Burundi will have built in the Nkomwe village, Kiganda commune of Muramvya province (center-west), a monument in memory of Famous “Bihome” who preferred to die in the place of King Mwezi Gisabo. Kenya’s Telecom Safaricom CEO, Bob Collymore, dies of cancer at 61.

Kenya’s Telecoms giant, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer, Bob Collymore is dead of cancer at 61 years of age on Monday, July 1, 2019, Kenyan local media reported.

South Sudan president, Salva Kiir held talks with his Kenyan counterpart, Uhuru Kenyatta, on his two-day visit in Kenya where they focused on deepening bilateral ties. The deals which were signed in Nairobi between visiting South Sudan President Salva Kiir and his host Kenya President Uhuru Kenyatta will also see the two countries set up a joint border commission for the management of the common border, Xinhua reported. As Daily Nation reported, there is a plan for Kenya to hold a trade expo in Juba, South Sudan, in November this year. Kenya has also agreed to allocate land for a dry port to South Sudan at the Naivasha Special Economic Zone and for a logistics hub near the new Lamu Port. In March this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta also offered Uganda land in Naivasha to build a dry port for its cargo as part of the joint standard gauge railway project. Uhuru maintained that the grant was meant to foster trade relations with Kenya’s neighbors as well as ease the clearing of goods headed to the youngest African nation. “Kenya has responded to South Sudan request to have 10 acres of land set aside at the inland container depot in Naivasha industrial park to be used by their government as a dry port,” Uhuru said. WHY IT MATTERS: Uhuru Kenyatta is seen deepening ties with almost all of the East African Communities countries such as Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, etc. Kenya, which has been quarreling with Somalia over maritime claims, is seen as ‘calm state’ within the East African Community block while its neighbors are still at odds with other EAC members states. Here, we will mention wrangling between Burundi and Rwanda, border row between Uganda and Uganda, etc. Kenya has been trying to mediate and help ‘warring parties’ to cool down and settle down in order to focus on the development with pin the EAC. It should be noted that Kenya is the sole country within the East African community block to be above others with the block in terms of social, economic and political developments.

According to an issued communiqué by Safaricom PLC, Safaricom CEO, Bob Collymore(above), has been undergoing treatment for leukemia for several months and some treatment for cancer, but these ailments did not permit him to go on. According to Citizen TV, Collymore had previously revealed to a few close friends that he had been informed by his doctors that he did not have a long time to live, thus suggesting that he was aware of his impending demise. “Bob Collymore had been told by his doctors not to make any long-term plans; in fact, he was told if he makes it past July he’ll be lucky. So he knew. I have never seen anyone prepared for death like I did this man,” Koinange told Citizen TV. The news of Bob’s death shocked many, including Kenya head of State. Uhuru Kenyatta took to Twitter to express his sadness of this loss for the Kenyan largest mobile service provider.

“It is with deep sadness that I have this morning received news of the death of Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore after years of battling cancer. As a country, we’ve lost a distinguished corporate leader whose contribution to our national wellbeing will be missed,”, Uhuru wrote on Twitter.

CNN reports Kenyan Central bank President, Patrick Njoroge, saying that ‘Bob helped position Kenya as a global leader in financial inclusion. His legacy will live on through all the people in Kenya and throughout the world whose lives have been changed by Safaricom’s innovations’.

Collymore has been the head of East and Central Africa’s biggest telco services provider, which recently declared a record Sh63.4 billion profit, since he took over from Michael Joseph in November 2010, Daily Nation reported.
