Most importantly, rather than asking for monetary gifts, adopt a charity and ask people to donate to a cause close to your heart.

“I think what makes Center Ground unique is the vibe of the SIM. So many people have told me how much they like the easy and approachable vibe here,” says Luch. “We try to balance the entertainment side with the educational and environmental sides of Ground Earth. What makes it unique is the assortment of people that choose to be here. These individuals could be anywhere on the grid, and yet they chose to set up shop here or live here. We have strong collaborations with people that live, set up shop, perform, and participate here– at our core, we believe that everyone’s opinion is valuable and respected.” Center Ground understandably means different things to different people. “Some people come to hear live DJs, singers, and comedians. Others come to chill and explore. Our musical and cultural events really resonate with people and attract all kinds from all over the world. We have a shopping area where you can still actually see the items you want to purchase and a world-class art gallery. Our educational component is still going strong and is really a popular experience for so many of our guests.”

DJS, SINGERS, TRIBUTE-BANDS Finding the right entertainment for a wedding is no simple task. What is too much, what is too little; when should the music play, when do we need the quiet celebration of the moment? The right music might be the highlight or the breaking point of the celebration as it is a crucial part of the reception. Hence finding a talented band, singer or a skilled DJ (perhaps even a combination) is an important step in the planning of any successful wedding. So to begin, we should ask a couple of basic questions: ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙ ∙

What is the musical taste of the marrying couple? What is the budget for entertainment? How much space is available for entertainment at the venue? What are the demographics of the guests? Is there a theme or style of the wedding itself?

Musical Taste This is seemingly the easiest decision to make, but it is an important one. The music can set the tone of your wedding and it can be argued that it represents the couple emotionally during the reception. Generally, the couple wants to come up with a selection of slow and fast songs, have some level of variety, and add some popular hits and evergreens that most guests might enjoy. However, keep in mind that a wedding is typically not a concert. The entertainment has to serve the event and the theme-- not the other way around. At the end however, the core of every consideration is that the couple are happy with the music selection, because it is their special day. A DJ or Live Singer is a consideration for almost every question asked above. When it comes to musical taste, a live singer is certainly more exclusive, more … well, live. Some singers are truly fantastic for the job, others not so much. It’s a risk. The set list of a singer is usually more

The downside, of course, is that the music is recorded - meaning NOT live. Because of those pros and cons, some wedding planners recommend both: a DJ and a live singer. Another option, if a wedding is aiming high, could be hiring a tribute band, given the marrying couple are fans of the same band. This can have a heavy impact on the budget, especially considering that the concert might be perhaps only 30 or 45 minutes, but the stage and show etc. has to be brought along anyway and require space. Budget for entertainment Price is always one of the key aspects, because weddings can get very expensive. Generally, DJs are less expensive than live singers. Tribute bands and DJ-Bands are pretty much all over the scale. DJ-Bands are a little harder to find, but can be much fun (act like perhaps top-40 bands you might find in clubs in RL-- except that they play the original recordings like DJs do). When talking about budget, we talk about booking. Currently, around 4 or 5 big booking agencies exist in SL. alongside quite a few smaller ones. First you need to decide ‘how much’ music you want and where (more than one location). So you tell the agent something like, “Wedding [Date,Time] for 2 hours, one location.” Make sure to contact some singers and DJs directly, as well as a couple of agencies. Some of the big ones we have listed below can help you get started in the right direction. Always ask for set lists to choose songs from. Most important advice here: Go out and see a set of the act before you book it!

Space at the venue Check out the venue and look at the space where you plan to position the DJ or Band. If you have a small podium, it might be ok for a DJ, perhaps a singer who does not animate his or her avi much. Keep in mind that artists perform better when they are comfortable to go in their ‘space’. A good performance reflects on your wedding, too. Perhaps you have something special in mind for entertainment in terms of positioning? That also should be planned well. Ask the singer, band, or DJ if they have a suitable stage, perhaps lights, etc. if this is the range of the theme the wedding is shooting for. Guest demographics This consideration should be simple, but often it gets forgotten. Be aware what different people you invite. What kind of music or events they like and expect. This does not mean that this has to be delivered, but it’s always good to know the expectations and make sure that the guests have a good time, too. Theme or style of the wedding itself Some weddings have a pretty strict theme, whereas others are simply ‘personal and festive’. There is no ‘right or wrong’, but it is generally a good idea to stay within the frame of a concept. This aspect should never be underestimated. It is very important the entertainment is in line with the theme or style of the wedding itself-- or at least does not contradict it: For a fantasy royal wedding, heavy metal is probably not the most appropriate music choice. If the perfect mix is important, a DJ is perhaps more flexible to fit in the theme, depending on the theme of course.

The magic conclusion in simple terms here is: stay within the frame of the theme and see the entertainer before hiring him or her. But again, at the end of the day, it’s the special day of the couple and the entertainment has to fulfill their expectations.

So, you decided to tie the knot! Don’t tell me that yu think planning is over just because you found a partner? Not a chance, dear. Besides the obvious need of a partner, you will also need a venue to celebrate the ceremony; an officiant, who will actually perform it; maids of honor for the bride; best men for the groom; kids to throw flowers; and decorations-- a lot of decorations, in fact. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! You agreed to say “I do,” now let’s find the place to say it! Three checkpoints may best describe the process for selecting a wedding venue: self-evaluate, explore your options, and gather information. The three options sound like detective work for a reason-- they are. Choosing a wedding venue can be a daunting task because unlike RL nuptials, SL weddings have limitless possibilities. If you can think it, you can do it. So let’s do it, but first, let’s make informed sound decisions with our three-point checklist offered by SL wedding pros.

2. Explore Your Options. Now this is the fun part-- checking what is out there. Again, this is Second Life. Most vendors have venues in stock-- typically a mix of traditional and the current trends in popularity. But no venue idea is unobtainable.

“I encourage couples to shop around if unsure,” Val adds. “Make sure they are getting everything they want for their special day.” Val and other wedding specialists have “stock venues” ready for rezzing, but most also offer custom work to your specifications. They are happy to rezz samples for potential clients to examine.

Most SL citizens have limited knowledge on controlling lag and rezz issues associated with large SL crowds. Your wedding is not the place to learn.

We have all heard the horror stories of a SL couple reciting their vows in front of 40 attendees and the bride poofs. Or the groom walks up a wall. Unless the groom is Spiderman, that is not a good thing. But if you or friends have expertise in SL building/design skills and can put a small venue together-- go for it. Many couple-created wedding sets work out fine. Or you can go the professional route. You are looking for more than a venue builder. You are looking for a team member. A good venue designer / builder will be with you every step of the way-- from idea to finished product. Prices vary. Some vendors have a set price for venues and build what you want. Others price the venue as part of a package. “For me, on the custom side of the business, I would suggest they figure out the size of the wedding first,” adds Nina. “How many people, how large of a wedding party, etc. That is going to determine the whole budget.” And most of all, don’t skimp. Yes, weddings are expensive: A small elope venue can start at $L 1,500

A destination venue which includes overnight lodging for the wedding party can run up to $L 75,000. But your SL wedding is perhaps the biggest event in your Second Life. Make it memorable. Make it yours. A stunning, well-planned venue makes it both.

WEDDING DÉCOR AND SERVICES So, you have decided to build your own venue; congratulations on making that decision! I did the exact same thing for my wedding here in Second Life last summer, and it was the best decision I could have made. I had a vision for my wedding, and the easiest way to make sure I had exactly what I wanted was to build it myself. Yet it’s easy to forget some important details along the way, so let’s look at a few of those details and how to take care of them! Be sure to book an officiant/celebrant to perform your wedding. You will need to find one that performs the style you are looking for, from traditional to completely not traditional. Choosing someone to perform your ceremony is just as important as choosing the date. What style, format, and wording will they use? Are you writing your own vows or using vows they create for you? No matter what you choose, ask for examples of their wedding scripts to see if they are a good fit for your needs. Being comfortable with the ceremony wording will make this day even more special if your beliefs and views come through in the ceremony itself. Be sure to look for a person and book them very early so you can check that off your checklist. Invitations should reflect who you are as a couple. You could build them yourself from pieces to make a scene, make them in Photoshop if you or someone you know has graphics skills and then make a giver in-world, or purchase invitations made for you by a wedding invitation professional in Second Life. Remember to have them purchased and ready to send out approximately four weeks before the wedding, but at least two weeks before to allow people to make arrangements to attend. My experience is that asking for RSVPs is not helpful, as most will not respond. A good rule of thumb is about 80% of the ones that respond ‘coming’ will actually attend. Always keep the capacity of the venue in mind when sending out your invitations. It can be very embarrassing if more try to attend than the venue can hold. If you need to have more at your nuptials than the sim can handle, be sure to look into a live stream service that can capture and stream your ceremony live for those not able to make it into the venue.

Speaking about the groom, are you wondering how many dress codes are possible? Infinite, but the most classic are only four: tight and half tight, tuxedo or three-piece suit.
