VIRTUAL VALENTINE
Article and Photography by: Sammie Audionmie Audion ter an
The origins of Valentine’s Day are somewhat mysterious. The catholic church recognizes at least three martyred Christian saints, and especially religious circles claim one of those saints as the origin. Other historians believe the holiday is an offshoot of Lupercalia, an ancient pagan festival held each year in Rome on February 15. Unlike modern Valentine’s Day, however, Lupercalia was a bloody, violent, and sexually-charged celebration including animal sacrifice, random matchmaking, and coupling in the hopes of warding off evil spirits and infertility. It goes without saying that these kind of ‘celebrations’ have no room in a Christian society. In order to attract followers of the pagan worldview, however, the holiday was kept and ‘downgraded’ to love and romance with

a touch of naughtiness. While it is correct that the celebrations has become highly merchandised these days, couples take on the popular endeavor to kindle their love and romance. This, of course, is certainly not a bad thing, as the daily rat race— trying, fighting hard, making ends meet —often takes most of what we can give, especially with children in the picture. For many, love and romance has somewhat left their RL (Real Life). Finding a new love is often complicated, and SL (Second Life) might offer a simpler solution. While it certainly does not hold up to a loving RL relationship, love
in SL is generally less complex. So, why not a real problem, as long as we are aware of the fact that finding a little happiness in the virtual world? the brain tends to make up ‘missing pieces’ in its most perfect form— the more desperate one is, the more Of course, virtual love does not come without ‘perfect pieces’ are plugged in. And the grid has much to offer indeed when it comes to virtual beauty and creativity. Deeply inspired creators make amazing places perfectly suited for a Valentine walk and perhaps a little ‘one-on-one’ to catch up with a loved one, as the daily rat race and the same-ole-same-ole tends to let lovers drift apart. Spending time together, talking, laughing, learning how the other feels again and again invites our loved one back into our heart. And coming to think about it … can a loving heart differentiate between virtual reality and ‘true’ reality?
The US Declaration of Independence discusses ”Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Does it really matter where one finds happiness if others are not harmed on their journey? Probably not. CONCRETE JUNGLE-NEW YORK CITY A hot time in the old town is not surprising, for this is Studio 54 in New York City— always hot and always cool, in the real world and the second one. As ceiling-mounted spotlights scan happy high-steppers, good friends and new ones dance the night away. Collectively, we realize Frank Sinatra was right: “Start spreading the news, I’m leaving today. I want to be a part of it...New York, New York.” We are a part of it in both worlds. Second Life is full of New York— trendy bars, iconic locations, historical spots, and buildings that reach for the stars. Ready to take a bite from The Big Apple? Let’s do it. For the new traveler, perhaps experiencing Earth’s second largest city is best done with a guide. And who better to navigate all things New York than a lifelong resident? Xtern01 is our go-toguy. A professional NYC musician who has played the Apollo, performed with Little Richard, and backed up James Brown, Xtern knows the Empire State. He walks the walk, talks the talk, and owns and operates 22 New York-themed SL venues that he built. You heard me— 22! Copacabana, and 42nd St. Block Party.
Article by: CompE|Photography: CompE Dance the night away in Studio 54, visit the Apollo Theater, groove at Woodstock… That’s just the beginning. Remember the movies Grease and Animal House? Rydell High School is here, and so is John Belushi’s Delta House ‘living’ quarters. And what New York experience is complete without “Putting on the Ritz?’ The Ritz is here, too— the club not the cracker. Other sites belonging to Xtern include NY NY Piano Lounge, Bushwhackers, BB King’s, 2001 Odyssey, Doo Wop Diner, Hitsville USA, NY Drive In, The Stone Pony, Trumpets, Yasgur’s Farm, Madison Square Garden, Ocean’s Eleven, Rocky Horror Picture Show, NY Beach Club, Centaurus, Copacabana, and 42nd St. Block Party. His life and times in Earth’s second largest city reflect in his 22 sites. Xtern notes, “I was born and raised in New Jersey and New York and wanted to recreate small, intimate stage and audience settings.” All of his clubs are New York big-city style yet friendly and intimate, a small town feel in a

colossal metropolis. “I wanted friendly, warm, fun, with no drama,” the owner adds. “It provides a comfortable place where people visit alone or with friends and partners.” Visitors are not only from big city as expected but also arrive from everywhere else. It has a world following, just like the real one. All it takes is a New York state of mind.
But with so many sites from which to choose, where does one start? Every journey begins at the NY NY Piano Lounge. Typical of many East Coast musical nooks, Second Life’s rendition offers dance, tunes, and socializing. But unlike its real life counterpart, this lounge is a portal to all aspects of ‘the City that Never Sleeps.’ You can’t visit all in one trip. Typically, only one of the 22 sites is rezzed on any given night. The day’s schedule is posted in the piano lounge. Visiting
all 22 could take over a month, exploring one per night, and is well worth the endeavor.
She is one of two hostesses in the dynamic duo of EvAngelina and Tyger.
Upon entrance to the lounge, one is treated like a celebrity— literally. The paparazzi await as strollers pass a barrage of camera flashes. Adventures in NYC are about to begin. Much behind-the-scenes work makes it happen.
“Everything has to fall in place,” EvAngelina continues. “All pieces must be fitted. Each night is a new venue detailed down to the last city brick.” And it happens in a New York minute.
We are a well-oiled machine team,” laughs EvAngelina.
Which one is best? From those who work here, that is an impossible question to answer.

Oh my goodness, where to start?” says EvAngelina. “There are so many reasons to visit. I love the people, our patrons. We have loyal VIPs, and new people are here all the time.” They come for the variety. “Because we have so many venues, we are not stuck on one genre of music,” she adds. “This place has so many options.”
Tonight at Studio 54, the option is dancing under the spinning lights of a disco mirror ball. The Big Apple owns the virtual night. And like the dancers on a crowded floor, New York City and Second Life are united, too. The cyber city merges with America’s City, a mouse click away.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT Today is about home and garden— but with a twist. I am excited about a new home and garden event, so I thought I would take some of the items from this and show you how you can mix and match them to decorate your home or garden area. The name of the event is ‘Boardwalk’, which according to their group description, “is a new, premier event featuring furniture, decor, homes, skyboxes, garden/landscaping, photo props, and other amazing creations of the highest quality.” It features some fab stores, and I hope you all give it the support it deserves. So, I have decorated an indoor and an outdoor scene from the items at this event, but I also added a few extra decor items from my inventory to add a little spice and to show you what is possible. First, we’ll look at the indoor scene. I uses a gacha rare I won as the setting for today’s scene. Ionic’s Mi Casita Skybox suited the look I was going for with the colours and textures of the items on hand. The second scene is outdoors, and I wanted to create a little hideaway garden area. I love garden nooks, so I used the Boardwalk items to set up this scene. The items are more spring and summer focused, so I hope you will forgive me for not making it all snowy. Perhaps February is time for the snow to melt finally.

THE MAGIC OF MESH STUDIOS At its essence, a good photograph takes an instant out of time, has great depth of feeling (as opposed to field!), and makes time stand still. I am of the school of thought that you don’t take a good photo, you make one; today in SL, doing this is getting easier and easier as technology and mesh studios evolve. Perhaps the best mesh studio in Second Life is by a dynamic duo: Sparkie Hallard and Grama Bates, the brains behind Image Photography. Sparkie found SL while reading an article in a popular UK newspaper about how someone made a million dollars in real life money from SL. “I was eager to get home that day, download SL, and find out what it was all about as I fancied getting my hands on some Linden money to cash in…it was something I had never even heard of...a virtual reality world!” Through a lot of experimentation, exploring, and a steep learning curve, Sparkie stumbled across a full perm photo studio that he deemed“… rubbish. I trimmed it up and messed about with it and made it look so much better. I then thought, ‘I can do this from scratch,’ and this was the birth of my business.” As Sparkie isn’t a scripter, through friends he found Grama Bates, and the
Article by: Sita Writer|Photography:Reign Congrejo dream team was born. According to Grama, “I do the scripting, and since we moved to mesh, some of the building. Originally, he did all of the builds, but since mesh came along I learned how to use blender. Sparkie generally has the ideas and makes some mock-ups or images, and I make the builds. We then go back and forth until we get something we think will be useful to photographers, models and peeps that love to take photos.” One of the first products offered is the model stand. Sparkie recalls, “I went around the grid to try to figure out what was missing, I would never copy anyone’s ideas—every studio we create is totally unique to Image Photography. I chatted with Grandma about some ideas and if she thought she could make them or not...She never said no! I remember looking at pose balls…how avatars pose together...very laggy and jumping on and off, etc. So I developed a stand where you can pose one or more avatars and change each other’s pose. Image Photography became the first in SL to master this idea, and we still are the only unique makers of this now.”

As SL evolved and as the business grew, the duo created more unique products— including these top five choices curated by Sparkie: “I would have to say that to date my top products are my photo studies, including the Mesh Meshudio, Memories, Life together, Touch, and the Pose Stand Multiple Avatar have sold immensely. I recently counted up the Meshudio, and it had totaled over 1500 items sold of that one item. The ratings for these items on market place are
hitting 5 stars each time— and the Meshudio has never had anything less than 5 stars!!” The newest Meshstudio has been totally rebuilt and given a complete redesign with better features. It is more compact and offers many separate drives to store special animations and textures that can be used separately. There is even special projection shadow lighting that can be used with or without color. They put in options to rez props to pose with special particle effects plus wall, ceiling, and
floor texturing. One especially unique feature of this studio is that you can change its size and shape to fit a room or to include lots of avatars in different poses all at once. The beauty is that the resizing option happens so easily with a user-friendly drop-down menu! Other things that make the mesh studio a standout are that you can not only make the studio larger or smaller but also pose multiple avatars in different poses and
that instead of a prim button, a touch button made by textures cuts down on the overall prim count. “

“People have told us many times that we make the best studio in SL, and we are pretty proud of that. We build our studios on customer requests and our own concepts, and then test them out with top models or bloggers in SL for suggestions. Our future plan at the moment is to continue to concentrate on improving and updating our existing studios. Another handy thing we have just initiated is our update room for SL peeps.” As for inspiration, Sparkie admits, “I like the sound of lindens dropping into my SL account and using that cash to do things in RL that I would not be able to do otherwise. It is also very satisfying to feel successful and see people in SL using, enjoying, and creating beautiful images with a little help from our studios.”
THE COLONY-A TRULY EVOLVED GOR Hey peeps, I’ve been away for a bit, but I’m baaaaaack!! Haha! And I’ve brought something totally awesome for you to check out. You ever wonder what would happen if you mixed a Gorean (Gor) theme with some urban flavor? Well, I’ve found out! The Colony, that’s what. The Colony was created by a very forward-thinking team. They may have found the missing (RP) link— a truly unique place that has something for everyone. They are a modern, urban, sci-fi Sim with elements from the Chronicles of Gor universe, but this is not and will never be (traditional) Gor. [sic](Application Instructions for Seda Island – The Colony) I had a chance to speak to Titan Smilodon Jie (titan footman) who owns and collaborated on the creation of The Colony. “I will say this: BTB [By the Book] and GE [Gorean Evolved] are slowly dying [in Second Life] because of the fact they are unwilling to change. You have 30+ Gor Sims. Half are under 10k traffic. There are too many Sims and too small a population, yet new ones open weekly with nothing different to bring in new people. It was part of our goal to change this.”
Article by: LYNXA JAMESON|Photography: JACKSON REDSTAR Titan says that the entire concept of The Colony was created by Ensiferum Dyrssen and Dyce Boucher, fellow Admins at the Sim, who Titan describes as incredible storytellers with an expansive knowledge of Gor. After a lot of brainstorming, the three agreed that they wanted a Gorean theme with a major twist. To that end, The Colony was born: an urban city with a Gorean background— a place that brings Gor and Earth together, created around the concept of the nest wars. Now, you know me— I love metered combat integrated with my roleplay, so I had to ask how it was being handled at The Colony. As a weapons designer and coming from GE, Titan has a background in metered fighting, while Ensiferum and Dyce are more about non-physical combat, so right away they integrated ideas that included both metered and dice outcomes into RP. Okay, now the meat. Let me tell you about The Colony and why I love the concept of this place already. Seda Island is the pulsing heart of The Colony, with 300,000 inhabitants. Now, picture this: a highly-technological, futuristic domed-in city with a sky monitored by surveillance drones. It’s secure; nobody enters or leaves without receiving access from Immigration. The dome has a broad expanse of water surrounding it with futuristic state of the art cloaking technology that keeps satellites from picking up the island’s presence in the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the presence of its spaceships docked underwater.

Carrying much of Gorean culture, Seda is a much evolved society where the concepts of sexuality and acceptance have moved beyond prejudice. Similarly, fashion has also evolved and it’s natural to see women and men dressing to reflect that. Sometimes, depending on the environment and weather in the city, the only difference between free and slave is the presence of the collar around the neck. [sic](The Colony – Sim Lore v2).I explored The Colony for a few
days, watching the people and their interactions. The mix of urban and gorean is not something I’ve ever seen anywhere else. The look and feel of the place is modern urban; however, the interactions between people were very much ‘in-character’ gorean. To see and experience something so outside of the box was refreshing. A place where you can branch out, stretch your mind, and— yeah, I’m going to say it, clothes whore that I am (LOL!)— wear a plethora of modern clothing in a themed gor city.
I really don’t want to give away too much about The Colony. I think you should go check it out. It’s truly unique and shouldn’t be missed. I will give one small snippet of conversation I happened to overhear— something to wet your whistle, if ya will. Both of the individuals involved were dressed in modern clothing, and if not listened to closely, this scene could have taken place anywhere. Conner Darkbyrd (dovahn), Seda Police Lt. nodded his head gently for a moment.
“It would do no good to strike you for simply attempting to tend to your work as simple as that...” he mused. “Tell me, who is it you are owned by? Do inform them they are welcome to contact me if questions remain,” he urged. Leetah (leetah.jefes), a Seda slave, smiled softly as her gaze washed over the Man, enjoying his directness. Her fingers entwined behind her back staying obedient before him. “I am owned by Ceyn Ballinger and Shade Ballinger, Master.”

“According to Titan, the future of The Colony is undetermined. It is still extremely new, having only opened just two months ago in November 2018. However, from what I’ve seen, it is already extremely popular, booming with vivid roleplay everywhere and a fully active city of immersive roleplayers. I can’t urge you enough to check it out. The Colony is different— refreshing ùand something to be celebrated for its originality.
