One exception is a Second Life dream that is real, tangible, and a 6-sim wonderland. ‘Dreams’ does not adequately describe Village of Ciampi and Petofi’s Villa— Mama Mia! does.

A MIDNIGHT DREAM Dreams. Drams that seem too wonderful to dare aloud. When the moon is full, light softly dancing along the water. Where the graceful wind sighs through the reeds’ caress. I wonder as I dream— does anyone else experience these dreams? I am wondering: does anyone have them? — dreams that sometimes are too wonderful to dare aloud. Perhaps it happens when the moon is full and the light softly glimmers and dances on water, like the graceful movement of the wind as it sighs in the arms of the reeds. I remember when I first met you, how I dressed in a gossamer gown in hopes of dancing the night away. Do you remember? We were entwined under a constellation of stars, whirlingin a spectrum of colors. And then, when we touched… I wondered— am I the woman for you or a woman being dreamed? Am I your dream? Will we dream together in the mist of time and illusions? When I think of you, it is like the afterglow of lovemaking— deep, blue, concentrated, untamed. Powerful and primal, the flash of a diamond in the moonlight at midnight, ignited. It is a place like the halo around the heart of the sun, where there is heat and fusion— a place where you and I rule opulently.

THE VALUE OF A DAD Father. The word is defined as “a male parent,” but it represents so much more depending on who you talk to. Some found their fathers to be a harsh taskmaster, always finding fault. Others found their father to be cold and distant, someone who provided the necessities but little warmth or love. Some refer to their father as “Dad” because of the fond memories and experiences they had with them. Then there are others that may just shrug because, for them, their father was absent throughout their life due to abandonment, imprisonment, or death. All these various scenarios prove that fathers have an impact, whether we had them in our life or not. For some that missed out on having good experiences with their father in real life, Second Life offers a unique opportunity. Many residents become part of roleplay-based families complete with siblings and parents. Others find male role-models that become the father figure they never had and who mentors them as any real-life father would. So, what is the secret to a successful father/child relationship? The website AskMen posted a general list that gave the following tips: Spend time with them; teach them to appreciate what they have and not take things for granted; be open to change; have respect for who they are as individuals; take an active interest in the things they are doing/feeling; provide an example with actions rather than words; support their right to make their own decisions; take time to teach them important things they need to know. A good father will not shelter their children from consequences or conflicts but will rather wait for them to figure out a solution, stepping in only when necessary. Perhaps most importantly, a good father will love his children unconditionally.
Article and Photography by: YSHIARA CERISE Up until the 1970s, the study of child /parent bonding focused on mothers, the parent traditionally involved with the children. Now, society and gender roles are changing. According to a Pew Research Center Report dated July 2, 2013, single father households have greatly increased, ranging from 297 in 1960 to 2,669 in 2011. Also, according to a U.S. census poll in 2012, 189,000 fathers opted to stay at home and look after children aged 15 and under so their wife could pursue out-of-house employment. So, what effect will this time spent with dad have on children? It depends on their ages. A study by Jeffrey Rosenberg and W. Bradford Wilcox found that babies will have more confidence and emotional security, along with better language and thinking skills as they develop. (An interesting side note: According to an article for Today’s Parent by Micah Toub dated June 8, 2019, recent studies are finding that when a new father begins to care for the needs of his newborn, he experiences a release of the hormones oxytocin and prolactin and a decrease in testosterone. These changing hormone levels give the father a sense of incredible love and empathy towards their baby, similar to what new mothers experience. It only begins to diminish when the father/child begin their natural separation when the child grows older.) When the child reaches toddler/childhood stage, if the father/child interactions continue, the child will learn through play how to manage both their behaviour and their feelings, which helps them socially when interacting with others. They will also be better prepared for school and are more likely to excel in their studies.

Even if the play is “rough,” it helps them to deal with aggression in a controlled manner when it comes to their emotions. Older children and teenagers benefit as well. They will have less discipline issues, be able to socialize better with others, and experience less depression. Boys will have fewer problems related to school, and girls will have a higher level of selfesteem. Researchers have discovered so many positive things about a father’s involvement in their children’s lives so far and will no doubt discover more as time goes on. These ongoing studies serve to prove the poignancy of the following quote by Adrienne Burgess: “By examining the different ideas about fatherhood in the ancient and modern worlds, studying the diaries of fathers, interviewing present-day fathers, and making use of other kinds of empirical research, we learn something that most of us already knew: fathers matter.” Happy Father’s Day!
