MEN IN MOTION “I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself.” -- Mikhail Baryshnikov “Men in Motion” can mean so many things at first glance: moving forward, forward thinking, working creatively, top of their game, dancing the night away… and, yes --- sex. Many evocative images come to mind when asked to think of Men in Motion, which is why BOSL wanted to get to the bottom of what Men in Motion means in SL! Turns out that Men in Motion is one of SL’s top male dance troupes; then again, it is also much more. Sebastain Bourne is the founder of Men In Motion. I wondered about the name Bourne and if he was related to Jason Bourne – the super spy in the books by Robert Ludlum (a man I was honored to meet in RL). Sure enough:. “I wanted to be Sebastian, but someone else already had this name, so I just switched the ‘a’ and ‘i’ around for Sebastain … and, Bourne was one of the choices of last names. I liked the Bourne series of books and movies, and so I chose it over other options.” In the early years, Sebastain Bourne spent most of his single parenthood beta testing PC games. “Before I came to Second Life, I hung out in another virtual world called There.com. Eventually,

Bosl edition

it closed, and many of us were looking for a new virtual world venue. At the time, Second Life was in beta testing, so some of us moved over to SL and beta tested it. When it went live, I stayed. I’ve actually been in SL since early 2003.” Sebastain started dancing with the stage dance community in 2013, when the troupes were predominantly women. As Sebastain recalls, “Half the women were using male alts for their dances, and there were very few men involved. But those men who were choreographing their own dance routines were good and overshadowed. So I decided we needed to be highlighted more and get more men involved. In 2015, I created Men In Motion to show the amazing talent of male choreographers and dancers.” People enjoy the art of virtual dancing for many reasons. Dance can be a positive projection of our self- image or a way for us to form a bond with others. Perhaps it is the way some of us express our feelings when words are insufficient--after all, everyone wants to be understood. Some of us can’t seem to explain why we begin to tap our feet to a favorite melody or pulse with the percussion of a samba rhythm…

perhaps dance is simply a translator for the human heart. Maybe dancing is a way for us to remember our youth and is a tribute to the carefree days of yesteryear. And, for those of us searching, perhaps dancing is a way to show the world how unique we are. However you answer the question, all of us enjoy dancing and watching dancers. Men in Motion includes some of the best male choreographers in the SL Dance Community. They perform in FEBRUARY, MAY, AUGUST, and NOVEMBER. “I like to think of Men in Motion as a brotherhood of dancers. We support each other, help each other, and have made good friendships in SL as a result of our association. The men that participate is what makes it work like clockwork.” Men in Motion is not only about men that dance and are always in motion, but also about the various causes they support, including the Movember Foundation. The Movember Foundation is an amazing cause started by this group of performers that focuses on men’s mental and physical health. . “There is not much in SL that has that as a focus, and we felt that it needed some representation. The first week of November is when we push for our cause and raise funds and awareness for men’s health.

We also help support other causes throughout the year. Men in Motion is a regular highlight at the Autism Awareness Event, Second Pride, the Mu Sigma Nu - SL Fraternity Men’s Health Expo, and the Suicide Awareness event.” When visiting the Men in Motion campus, be sure not to miss the Men in Focus Gallery that displays artwork depicting men at work and play in SL created, exclusively by male artists in SL. Exhibition artwork changes in November and April. “We are really proud of this gallery because it is one of the very few on the grid that is exclusively dedicated to artwork that has been created by men. We welcome everyone to enjoy the SL photography and 3D sculptors that are on display.” With all these accomplishments, Sebastain is a modest man and recognizes that although he is the owner and driving force of Men in Motion, he has many people to thank. “I am so lucky to have a team that helps me…without Southerncomfort Magic to keep me on track and Jo Balogh to support our external causes, I would be overwhelmed by the amount of work it takes to grow and spread the message of our group.

Bosl edition 13

IWe have a great Art Director, too, Alex Avion, who does our yearly calendar. I am grateful for all they do.” Sebastain notes that the calendar is easy to get, full of fun, and free! As for the future, Sebastain and his team strive to establish a stronger group that can perform even more shows for good causes and spread the joy of the performing arts and their message across the grid. As for SL, the things important to Sebastain are things all of us hold dear: “I treasure good friends, meaningful connections, and lasting relationships. I have known people in SL longer than most of my friends in real life, and they have become so meaningful to me.”

A VIRTUAL SANCTUARY For many, Real Life (RL) is a complex compromise- not necessarily bad, but definitely a compromise. Our lives have many aspects and layers, more or less complex storylines that might or might not be contradicting. We are expected to keep those layers in our life under control and steer the emotional boat nice and steady. This expectation is often demanding and might leave us in a rather dull stage of various shades of gray. Sadly, the better life is ‘managed’ in this way, the more gray lives can become-- a true catch 22. Some excitement can stimulate us, keep us on our feet, but often that comes with the risk of losing control over the steering wheel of said emotional boat. To make things even harder, life is not exactly ideal. It comes with turbulence and chaos, leaving us desperate for balance and harmony. So we try to force life even more into said gray shades, just to end up in the same circular dilemma. If this sounds at least somewhat familiar, one might wonder what to do? For Denise Wirtanen and Minette Aengus, the answer is their Angel’s Nest. In all fairness, it is unlikely that asking the question above was indeed the starting point for them to build their sim. What is quite certain, though, is that Angel’s Nest is their Virtual Sanctuary. A place to find their balance and harmony, a place to find belonging and togetherness-- even though in their RL, they are thousands of miles apart. And a Sanctuary Angel’s Nest is. Many romantic sitting areas can be found in this harmonic, picturesque ‘naturescape’ right out of a fairytale. The naturespace creates harmonic and peaceful impressions with lush forest, waterfalls, and lovely paths just perfect for walks and romantic explorations. They choose beautiful high-quality textures that give the place a somewhat dreamlike reality. Why not sit down for a while and enjoy watching the rabbits happily play? Up the hill rests a lovely Tuscan Villa. A huge dining table sits in the courtyard. Apparently, the meal was over a minute ago, and the residents

Article & Photography by: Sammie Audion went somewhere for coffee-- perhaps before cleanup? They better hurry, those cute cats might grab some of the leftovers. At this villa, one can find some lovely sitting areas. The architecture is open, perfectly created to give cover for rainy days while still allowing lovely views into the breathtaking naturescape. Denise and Minette could have left their virtual sanctuary just like this, and it would be perfect. But an important element was required for them to make their sanctuary complete. Another area open to the public is a large skybox that includes a BDSM area with a collection of racks and cages equipped with almost realistic bondage options-- as far as Second Life (SL) goes, at least. One might expect a dungeon to be best suited for this, but the couple decided to place their playground in an Asian temple: clean and sparse. However, the temple makes up for only half of this skybox. The other half is a dedicated aftercare area, a beautifully setup ‘zen-like’ park. How does that all fit together? You could say it’s all an interpretation of Yin and Yang, ‘holding and letting go’; perhaps Goju (Gōjū) which translates from Japanese as ‘hard and soft’. Finding harmony and balance-- even happiness --is personal and can be achieved in many ways. It could be said that letting go of everything-- the chaos, the fear, worries --and submitting to someone’s caring assertiveness can be truly liberating. Imagine a place in your mind that only ‘is’: quiet, calm, and content. Nothing can reach this place that is under the total control and protection of the loving, caring dominant-- not even the body of the submissive, as it is restrained. Yes, true: Not everyone chooses this almost meditative approach, nor does it reflect the motivation that guides a submissive into BDSM. When practiced properly, though, BDSM is an agreement based on trust and consent. It can be fulfilling for both partners. So, looking at Angel’s Nest from this perspective, the temple and the naturescape on the ground are two sides of the same coin.

Bosl edition 27

Regardless of what your motivation is for coming to this Virtual Sanctuary, you might rediscover your balance and harmony or simply enjoy your time. If you should wonder about BDSM, SL might offer you a safe and painless entry point. But make no mistake: a BDSM journey takes time; it requires some research and certainly the right partner to develop the trusting, non-abusing relationship required --regardless whether you intend to limit your endeavors to SL or expand into RL at a later point in time. After all, it’s rarely a bad idea to expand our horizons. Seeing and understanding a path does not necessarily mean it has to be yours. But it can help us understand and accept the people around us. In that sense: Happy exploring and indulging your curiosity - whichever path you eventually choose.

RARE DISEASE DAY 2021 Rare Disease Day is an annual awareness campaign in Real Life that is held on the last day of February. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic preventing in-person campaigns, I will recreate this event in Second Life. On Sunday, February 28th, 2021 from midnight SLT until Monday, March 1st, 2021 midnight SLT, we will have live artists and DJs playing on our venue : http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Tainted%20Island/156/206/2004 What is Rare Disease Day? source : https://www.rarediseaseday.org/article/what-is-rare-disease-day Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year. The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. The campaign targets primarily the general public and also seeks to raise awareness amongst policy makers, public authorities, industry representatives, researchers, health professionals and anyone who has a genuine interest in rare diseases. Why is Rare Disease Day held each year? source : https://www.rarediseaseday.org/article/what-is-rare-disease-day Building awareness of rare diseases is so important because 1 in 20 people will live with a rare disease at some point in their life. Despite this, there is no cure for the majority of rare diseases and many go undiagnosed. Rare Disease Day improves knowledge amongst the general public of rare diseases while encouraging researchers and decision makers to address the needs of those living with rare diseases.

Article & Photography By: Wesley Regenbogen Key figures about rare diseases: source : https://www.rarediseaseday.org/article/what-is-a-rare-disease There are over 300 million people living with one or more of over 6,000 identified rare diseases around the world1, each supported by family, friends and a team of carers that make up the rare disease community. Each rare disease may only affect a handful of people, scattered around the world, but taken together the number of people directly affected is equivalent to the population of the world’s third largest country. Rare diseases currently affect 3.5% - 5.9% of the worldwide population. 72% of rare diseases are genetic whilst others are the result of infections (bacterial or viral), allergies and environmental causes, or are degenerative and proliferative. 70% of those genetic rare diseases start in childhood. A disease defined as rare in Europe when it affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people. Characteristics of rare diseases Over 6000 rare diseases are characterised by a broad diversity of disorders and symptoms that vary not only from disease to disease but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease. Relatively common symptoms can hide underlying rare diseases leading to misdiagnosis and delaying treatment. Quintessentially disabling, the patients quality of life is affected by the lack or loss of autonomy due to the chronic, progressive, degenerative, and frequently life-threatening aspects of the disease. The fact that there are often no existing effective cures adds to the high level of pain and suffering endured by patients and their families.

Bosl edition

41

Common challenges The lack of scientific knowledge and quality information on the disease often results in a delay in diagnosis. Also the need for appropriate quality health care engenders inequalities and difficulties in access to treatment and care. This often results in heavy social and financial burdens on patients. As mentioned, due to the broad diversity of disorders and relatively common symptoms which can hide underlying rare diseases, initial misdiagnosis is common. In addition, symptoms differ not only from disease to disease, but also from patient to patient suffering from the same disease. Due to the rarity and diversity of rare diseases, research needs to be international to ensure that experts, researchers and clinicians are connected, that clinical trials are multinational and that patients can benefit from the pooling of resources across borders. Initiatives such as the European Reference Networks (networks of centres of expertise and healthcare providers that facilitate cross-border research and healthcare), the International Rare Disease Research Consortium and the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020 support international, connected research. How can Rare Disease Day make a difference? Rare Disease Day raises awareness for the 300 million people living with rare disease around the world and their families and carers. The long-term cause of the Rare Disease Day campaign is to achieve equitable access to diagnosis, treatment, health and social care and social opportunity for people affected by a rare disease. Important progress continues to be made with joint international advocacy efforts for universal health coverage (UHC), part the United Nation’s

Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) to advocate for equitable health systems that meet the needs of people affected by rare diseases in order to leave no one behind. Rare Disease Day is the opportunity advocate for rare diseases as a human rights priority at local, national and international level as we work towards a more inclusive society. Rare Disease Day is a great example of how progress continues to be made, with events being held worldwide each year. Beginning in 2008, when events took place in just 18 countries, Rare Disease Day has taken place every year since, with events being held in over 100 countries in 2019. We hope to see you at our event for Rare Disease Day in Second Life on Sunday February 28th, 2021!

MARCH IS MAD I am happy to announce that it is springtime in SL-- finally, winter is over! I am hoping that it is where you live, too. Time for flowers to bloom, kittens to be born, and the spring sales to begin. Spring is the perfect time to redecorate your home or just change it altogether. It is also the time to get rid of all that snow and change over your backyard to grass, green trees, and spring flowers. This spring, I am making sure that I am adding some bright colours to my decor and furniture. The good thing about this time of year is all the amazing flower and plant colours, so brighten up your home, patio, and outdoor areas. I am looking forward to adding outdoor spaces to my new house.I will share the new one in April, but in the meantime I have this gorgeous house from Trompe Loeil that has two separate patio areas, and one even has a pool! I love the waterfall that feeds into it. I know it is a bit cool for swimming yet, but I am getting ready! The joy of SL is breaking the rules! I am loving the open-plan living space in this home, and it has all sorts of shapes within it so that you can create separate spaces to enjoy. I have created a kitchen, living room, music area, and lounging space. I like to have different nooks that break up the room.

I have also created a fun bedroom area and two spaces for outdoor relaxation. I am going to enjoy breakfast on the front porch while I take in the view. Enjoy your spring change-over, and remember to check out all the spring sales and events. The spring furniture and decor is always amazing!

THE SWEET SPOT If you want to pack a sim with over 50 people for more than two hours, you need to offer something really good. And whatever definition you might have for “something really good,” it likely doesn’t hold a candle to what the crowd that packed The Sweet Spot was able to enjoy January 24th-- the day Mankind Tracer opened the newest venue for live shows, DJs, or simply hanging out with friends listening to great music. Mankind Tracer is a veteran rocker in SL, in RL he is better known as Seth Regan, a New Yorker who now resides in California and defines himself as a father, a friend, a musician, a designer, and a marketer. As a well-established musician in Second Life, he has garnered an impressive number of accolades throughout his career, including Award Winner 2011 Lifetime Achievement, Resident’s Choice Favorite Live Musician 2009, BOSL Best Live Performer 2008 and Vain, Inc. 2008 Reader’s Choice Best SL Live Musician, Best Singer/ Songwriter Award.

Bosl edition

He decided to come to Second Life one day in 2006, when something caught his attention while surfing the Net: the words “virtual word.” He was “captivated by the concept” and the way that could be beneficial for his professional life as graphic and website designer and marketer. But when he found out about the possibilities of streaming, he thought “why can’t I perform live and send that signal in? So, I very quickly figured out the technical aspects and began performing live shows. Little did I know how immensely it would affect my real life!” “Having toured professionally for over 20 years, I can tell you that the point of touring is, of course, the fun, but also to reach people with my music. In the first few years in SL, I had reached more people globally than I did touring for those 20+ years. Now over 14 years later, the SL community continues to honor me with their support, and for that I am humbled and forever grateful. I have also been asked to design professional logos, graphics, websites, social channels, and the like for SL businesses, venues, and brands, so the impact has been on my professional design and marketing career as well as the music.”

Article and Photography by: Coco St. George

The club Mankind Tracer opened in January is his third try at club ownership. The first one was also called The Sweet Spot, a small outdoors tropical spot. Then, along with his friend Brandy, he created a sim called The Village, with Club Graffiti. “It was a pretty hot spot for a while with lots of the top performers of Second Life taking the stage.” Club Graffiti reflected the New York City dive bars he played early in his career. Unfortunately, Brandy passed in 2016, and Tracer closed up both the Village and the club. And thus, when he thought about opening a new place, “as a memory of her and what we accomplished, I decided to keep the original name but also the vibe of the New York City clubs.” The name is not exactly the same as the original name, since the new club is called The Sweet Sp*t. AAs he was thinking about the tagline for the club, he remembered “how I tell people sometimes at my shows to come and ‘escape from the bullshit’: hang out, enjoy a breath away from the difficulties we are all dealing with in life. But I didn’t want to offend anyone, so I went with it and used the asterisk in Bullsh*t.” Then he realized how the asterisk is a form of censorship, “and being a person known for going against the grain, of course I decided to make that the most noticeable part of the brand.”

As would be expected, for the big opening, Tracer wanted something really good. Thus, he called Maximillion Kleene, whom he has been friends with for a long time. “He is my go-to performer whenever I put on a major SL event,” Tracer adds. They even performed together in San Diego in 2011, where they shared the stage on a few songs. And now, for the big opening of The Sweet Sp*t, they again shared the stage in SL, in what is called dual streaming and requires a very advanced equipment-- not to mention the technical skills to operate it. Live music has become a staple of Second Life, and Tracer thinks the scene has become saturated with musicians. “As someone said to me recently, you can’t spit without hitting a live show,” he comments. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, he adds, because “just like in Real Life, the cream will always rise to the top.” But no matter how much a musician may excel in their craft, they still need a venue to perform. That’s why Tracer recommends people tip the venues; after all, he explains, “they are the ones footing the bill for the virtual soil under your digital shoes,” and adds:
