Templemore-Lutz City Article and Photography by: Sammie Audion

EGenerally speaking, we tend to give negative things more weight than they might deserve. Which is, of course, perfectly understandable— within reason. This circumstance is directly related to the saying ‘we don’t know how good something is until we lose it’. Quite frequently, a ‘bad thing’ – typically somewhat convoluted – is made responsible for any evil and harmful things that stand in the way of one’s true happiness. In most cases, this is utterly absurd and prevents actions that could actually bring desirable improvements to the problem. lSadly, this behavior does not only apply to stubborn and defiant children who just will not listen to reason. More often than not, people in these situations are left with heavy frustration that makes their life nothing but difficult, hateful, and

disappointing. Illustrating examples may be left up to you, dear reader – they are certainly not hard to find within these troubling times. The relevant question, rather, is how all this is related to Second Life (SL). It is not, yet it is. After all, people in Real Life (RL) create virtual realities in SL. Now, we don’t know if the creator of Templemore or Lutz City had any desire to show what might happen when said frustration wins and something perfectly beautiful is left behind when the sim was created. The creator certainly created an amazing livelihood and reality, yet the residents are eerily missing. One might wonder why such a perfect and idyllic little town has snapped from a pulsing,

busy city to a vacuity of life apparently in a heartbeat. People obviously left in hurry or even gave up on their travel preparations and simply vanished – almost like The Langoliers by Stephen King. IThis first impression – if experiencing it to begin with – vanishes quickly when the exploring commences, and attention is paid to the amazing details of this installation. A car loaded far beyond its physical capacity has a Belgium license plate saying ‘OUTAHERE,’ indicates that someone was in hurry given that the escape car was left behind. The stickers on the car might make you chuckle.

On further exploration, vegetable stands can be found. Perhaps some delicious sweets are desirable for the journey? The ‘stands’ are actually old vehicles – a VW bus and a little old truck. If anyone feels adventurous, a hovering bicycle carried by balloons floats on the bridge. Getting over said bridge, we cross the little river that flows through the city. There, a barber and a tattoo shop offer their services— of course, no one is currently working. An Irish pub invites the thirsty traveler for a cold Guinness, or perhaps even a hot meal. The streets of Lutz City are anything but boring. Old cars are parked at the curb: most can be considered true antiques. It shall be left to the visitor if these vehicles represent the good ole times. In front of the hotel are two cars that are just loaded or unloaded. Unlike the Hotel California, this hotel apparently allows their

guest to check out AND leave. Talking about ‘Hotel California’: Culture is a big deal at Lutz City. An impressive theater advertises regular events. Two other beautifully charming venues can host concerts or, frankly, any sort of event. One of them is a lovely outdoor place, perfect for a Sunday afternoon concert in the park. The organizers of Lutz City setup events with live singers, and they usually pull quite a crowd.

Ito a population that shows a strong vision for the place with a pulsing cultural scene. Feel free to let it inspire you and read into it whatever might stimulate your fantasy. Hopefully, it can help prevent succumbing to the frustrated and perhaps even hateful mind set described in the introduction. Arts and creativity can inspire open mindedness, compassion, and tolerance. Every worldview understood improves our own, regardless of whether we agree with it or not.

A library full of books offers a space for more quiet and lyric moments. Some of the books are stacked In that sense, be nice to yourselves and each other. up in a large pile. Single sheets are flying through the air – perfect for amazing photos or to simply watch and enjoy the creativity of the different scenes. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/ So yes, while the original residents of Lutz City Templemore%20City/117/122/29 might have had a desire to ‘get out of here,’ the city certainly gives home

SIZZLING IN THE SUMMER OF SECOND LIFE Summertime, and the living’s easy— in your second home, second summer, and Second Life. Time to enjoy the heat: let the virtual summer sizzle begin. Grab the suntan lotion and start here with a few suggestions for warm fun in the cyber sun: Trail Ends National Forest – Campground. Everything but the mosquitos and poison ivy awaits you at Trail Ends in one of the most realistic rustic settings of the imagination. With 20 campsites available, tents, cabins, a lodge, campfires, and wildlife are at every turn. Arrive early: exploring every turn may take a while. This site is huge, with a lot crammed into every raccoon-tracked prim. nd Down Under from here to yonder thanks to Second Life. Now, I am no expert on the continent w“Everything here works,” says Jordon Andrew, creator of this outdoor inner-computer experience. Checkers and other games are in the lodge, as is a roaring fireplace. The campground also boasts a self-serve restaurant, complete with downloadable menu. A laundry room, arcade, and kayaks are also available.

I’m planning a real world visit t “I spent a lot of time in campgrounds in RL,” Jordon notes. “Trail Ends National Forest Campground is based on those experiences.” Campsites are available to rent. Just walk the trail, find a vacant one you like, click it, and rent. The Unknown Theme Park How did the Unknown Theme Park obtain its name? This question is often posed to creator Miyi.Nishi. “I don’t know,” Miyi replies, smiling, “that’s unknown.” Okay, we can build from that. And she does. “It had other names in the beginning, like ‘Ade’s Arcade’ and ‘Mini Theme Park.’ But somehow the ‘Unknown Theme Park’ was the name under which it became known.”

The unknown is now known. Enough said. Let’s do it. What you need to know is that this is a carnival of midway rides from everybody’s childhood. Features include a rollercoaster, giant Ferris wheel, and rides that spin, hurl, thrill, and chill. There’s also a really good haunted funhouse. Miyi notes, “The way the rides are put together and presented is what makes each amusement park unique.” Her park is no exception. “We have a very high density of rides, games, and other attractions,” She notes. “Some are hidden

underground, while others are just too big to hide. There is quite some exploration required to find all of them.”

S But finding them is part of the fun. Ride one, ride all, or just walk around with friends and take in the sights. Cotton candy sold separately—and available exclusively in real world flavors. The Unknown Park is celebrating its 10th anniversary in SL with many free rides, old ones and some brand new. Miya adds, “Come by to relax, dance, explore. We are still your family – friendly Unknown Theme Park.”

Inspire Space Park So, you’ve done the Grand Canyon, toured New York, and spent your last dime in Disney World. Now, reach for the stars. Better yet, stretch further: an interplanetary space park is within your grasp— seeing it will make you gasp. Amazing graphics await. No better place to dance than on the moon – or asteroids, planets… heck, even meteors are within reach. “I wanted this place to look natural,” says builder Grafx Newbold. “I never wanted the park to be space ships.”

Inspire has daily events such as dances, D.J. sets, and more. Hop on a planet, click on a crater, and select the menu. Nothing enhances bustin’ dance moves better than limited gravity. And how cool is the background of a mammoth, brilliant orange sun? Actually, it’s not cool, it’s pretty hot— I mean, it’s the sun, right?

Some folks (me for example) come here just to park on a distant solar system and have lunar tunes playing in the background while doing tasks here in gravity-burdened earth. Try it. It is out of this world – literally. Pacifique So there I was, riding my sea dragon…You heard me, sea dragon— big, green, scaly, sort of like

That’s just part of the magic. “Pacifique is a relaxed, quiet place to find your inner peace,” according to creator Éclair Martinek. “It has something for everyone – forest, jungle, caves, beaches, underwater.”

In addition to sea dragon rides (just click on the creature and giddy up), Pacifique offers dancing, hidden places, and underwater adventures. For above sea-level activities, visitors can check out the Beach Club. I’m told it is popular with the land dwellers. Features include a roomy swimming pool and socializing area. Other TP options include three levels of forests, two caves, and much more on land and in sea.

DECK LIVING

The sunshine bathes in clouds of many hues And morning’s feet are gemmed with early dews, Warm daffodils about the garden beds Peep through their pale slim leaves their golden heads John Clare

The month of May is upon us, and spring is in full swing in SL. The flowers and trees this year are stunning. Each year, the designers of SL continue to amaze me with their creativity and innovation. I keep thinking that soon there will be nothing new under the SL sun, but so far, I have been proven wrong— and I am okay with that! I know that last month my article and photos focused on the outdoors and that this month I should be doing an indoor theme. But with all the beautiful patio and porch items around at the moment, I could not be tempted indoors. At least I am a step closer with this deck-themed scene. This month’s central piece was simple: the house with its brilliant decking area. Ffrom Trompe Loeil, the Bailey A-Frame Cottage + Deck was just perfect for the needs of the space this month. I wanted a vast decking with room for all the flowers, potted plants, and outdoor furniture I could

Written and Photography by: Arya Braveheart squeeze in. This cottage fit the bill nicely. The next items to be placed were the furniture items, and I played around with these for quite a while as I had so much from which to choose. In the end, I went with a wicker theme and kept the furniture pretty simple with just a couch and a variety of chairs, stools, and coffee tables to provide places to enjoy the sun or shade. From there I went crazy with potted plants, gardening items, coffee cups, assorted food platters, and general patio decor. I had so much to put in, but I knew it wouldn’t all fit. I picked pieces from sets and tried to create an area that would keep a gardener happy. I bet the owner of this deck is gifted a lot of potted plants and flowers! As always, the last items to be rezzed and placed were the trees and plants outside of the decking area. There is a very simple and practical reason for this: They get in the way! If you put large trees and plants in early on in the piece, then you will be forever accidentally grabbing them when you try to remove or move other items. It just makes sense to rez them last so you don’t get frustrated.
