Halloween At The Arranmor Writer an Photography: Sammie Audion

Most of us do like a little bit of spook once in a while. Certainly, that is no different in Second Life (SL). Given the updates over time, the experience in this virtual world cannot be compared to its beginnings in 2002. Objects can now affect the avatar, textures (mesh) look amazing. That means, of course, that places in SL can be quite spooky given the builder’s intention. Lauren Bentham had this intention when she built Arranmore, an amazingly creepy world named after an island off the west coast of County Donegal, Ireland. Its story is a sad one, really. Arranmore was a sleepy yet flourishing fishing community, its economy relying heavily on Lord & Lady Inman— the owners of the large, beautiful

manor. Years back, the couple went on vacation with their two children, but the family never returned. No one knows what happened, the disappearance mysterious to say the least. The community could not survive without the wealthy family, and one after another, the islanders moved away. Arranmore fell into decline. Most residents left or passed away, and just a handful of people still live there— at least, so it is said. Those residents are rarely seen. Strange things are said to be happening on the island: ghostly images of the island’s lost children were seen. Something seems to be amiss to drive visitors and future residents away. The old manor is said to be haunted, and an eerie cloud hovers over the entire island (Make sure you set your viewer to use the

being scared or spooked. They enjoy a natural high from the ‘fight-or-flight-response’ quite a bit. In those moments, our brain produces dopamine, a hormone that can cause highly exciting, not to say addicting, effects for some. Others might enjoy the confidence and release when the ‘threat’ is over. Whatever your reason, a good scare can certainly be an exciting experience. Moreover, the chemicals released during ‘fight-orflight’ can work like glue to build unforgettable, strong memories or even deepen relationships.

Bentham created a wonderfully creepy island that reminds one of some frightening movie scenes or landscapes. If you run a nice big screen and put on a headset, you might just feel the hair on your back stand up in spinechilling excitement. Wait! Wasn’t there a shadow moving behind those trees? Why are the headlights of this truck still on? And … even worse … why is the tire-swing hanging from this tree still swinging with no wind at The builder’s love for detail and skill in building all? HIDE! FAST! A hooded creature is on paired with fantasy, creativity, and imagination can the way up to the mansion! be found in many little corners and unexpected places. Therefore, make sure you bring enough time Granted, not many enjoy life-threatening to Arranmore. Bentham points out in the description situations. However, many like the thrill of

of the island that this place is open year-round. So in SL, Halloween can be much more than a ‘one-day-event’. Don’t get me wrong: her creepy creation perfectly fits the bill for your Halloween encounter, but Arranmore is an all year adventure from the coolest SL has to offer as often as you choose to take it on. Super Heros Of SL Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman! And he gets by with a little help from his friends. They’re super, too. They are crime fighters, battling unusual foes with unorthodox methods while wearing cool outfits. They bring comic book pages to life, and you can too. Ready to don tights, adjusts your mask, and save the world? Hold on to my cape. Let’s fly. Second Life is the home of superheroes. The rosters are impressive. Roll call includes Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Spiderman, the Hulk, and additional titans of good will and bulging biceps. You have followed their adventures in movies, read of epic tales in comic books, but never before interacted with caped crusaders. Now you can, because somebody must answer the Batsignal— why not you? Why not indeed, says Abbi Sorbet, a creator, builder, and enthusiast of SL superheroes and super settings. Inspiration derives from her father’s vast comic book collection she inherited. “I loved

Photographs and Article by CompE the stories and the characters,” Abbi says. “I prefer comic book versions to the film renditions.” She helped pioneer the Second Life version. “The movies are never correct,” Abbi notes about Hollywood’s portrayal of caped champions with incredible strength. “We choose to stay with the comic book version and bring it to life.” After a stint with SL’s original superhero site, Marvel Universe, Abbi branched out and was a principle builder/organizer/administrator in Justice, Home of the DCU Role Play. She is also Super Girl. The journey begins with a teleport to the Daily Planet Building. You may recall the Daily Planet as the employer of mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent. Spoiler alert: Clark Kent is also Superman (as if you didn’t know). In Second Life, Theo Adonide portrays the Man of Steel. The two go way back. “I first saw Superman while watching the ‘Lois and Clark’ TV Series,” recalls Theo, who also owns and operates the superhero roleplay website, myonline (http://mvonline.kingscreativeworks.com) and SL counterpart, Multiverse Online. “I fell in love with the character and admired his intelligence

and heroic nature. I watched this series while I was living in a small town in Kansas, so I related even more.” (Superman’s boyhood home was Kansas.) He continues, “Growing up, I looked for role models: someone kind, respectful, and lawful. I was a bit of a big brother for my childhood friends, watching over them, especially when they dealt with bullies. But I believed in peaceful

solutions to problems, unless self-defense was required.” Superman fit the bill. Theo, who also plays ‘Nexus’ in his Multiverse site, notes, “When I learned about Second Life and how you could dress as anyone, I chose Superman and made my first avatar.” And the Man of Steel became the caped avatar of SL. Others did, too. Melina Firehawk has been a superhero for over five years as a role player and site administrator for the Justice Sim. “I really enjoy taking on the roles

of the canon characters.” Melina portrays Firestar, Scarlet Spider, and a personally created character, Sea Hawk. Her other alts of power include Troia, Siren, and Hila, twin of Mera. “I make them my own while interacting with others on a social basis, or during larger RP events that advance the storyline. I also enjoy having our sims participate in certain opportunities around Second Life like the Sci-Fi Expo, the Sci-Fi Convention, and Relay for Life.” Superhero sites have similar venues. Superhero sites have similar venues. All are dedicated to saving the world and having fun doing it. Let’s start with the Justice Sim. From the Daily Planet, teleport into one of three famous towns of DC comic fame: Gotham City (Batman), Metropolis (Superman), and Central City (The Flash) and other towns where city zoning includes people flying in tights and capes. Predefined scenarios of good against evil, law against crime, and delightful against diabolical await.

and could end up with multiple people in the same role.” Abbi notes, “At Justice, we review applicants to see who knows the character better. Some people put a lot of effort into their application, learning about the person – or super person – they hope to portray.”

“We can’t just let people walk in off the streets,” adds Abbi Sorbet. “There would be no control

Candidates are interviewed by general managers and notified quickly of the results. If you are accepted, congratulations. Now let’s get to work.

Super villains will not wait. New recruits are added to the group and roleplays. Marvel’s calendar of events is one the coolest in SL. At this visit, the Avengers were set for Sunday, Sept. 23. SHIELD meets Saturday Oct. 6. How cool is that, and what do they discuss? Find out for yourself, perhaps with a cape and x-ray vision as one of the few, the proud, the superheroes of Second Life.

Home Above Home I figured it was about time I did another scene with the guys in mind, although the occupant of this abode is not as tidy or organized as the the owner of the last male area I decorated. This guy is living above his parents in their attic. He calls it his “apartment,” but we all know what it is: home to a guy who is pretending he has left home but, in reality, his mother still cooks for him and does his laundry. I had fun with this, and the best part is that I didn’t have to Colour coordinate or stick to any style of decor. This space is his but also has a few of his parents’ storage items stacked in the corner. He ignores them. I also had fun with a few Halloween items scattered about. This guy is ready for the spooky season and is already organizing a party with a few mates and friends, as well. Lucky for him, his parents are away that weekend, so no one will complain about the noise! I started, as always, with the bigger items. That is the easiest way to get started. I had originally pictured all this in a doomsday prepper bunker, but then I decided the premise of the parent’s attic was just too good not to go with.

Written and Photography by: Arya Braveheart So, the first items were the bar, the couch, the desk, the Foosball Table, and the cinema seats. Putting these items in a small space is like playing Tetris and can often take a while. From there, it is all about layering; starting from the back and layering the items down so it looks authentic. I was also lucky with a couple of pieces, as an event had just opened. I managed to nab them in a gacha. Bonus! I will even add items as I begin to take photos and notice gaps or that the balance of the area isn’t right. However, with this scene I wasn’t too panicked, as I wanted it to look authentic and ‘thrown together’ even though nothing in here wasn’t thought out. The hardest part was getting items onto the sloped walls. That took a lot of fiddling about! I hope you enjoy my little nod to Halloween, and I want to wish you a happy and safe Boo Season wherever you are. I am hoping this encourages you to have fun with your Halloween and Autumn decorating. Get creative and enjoy all the new Fall and Halloween items beginning to appear. BOO!
