SL HALLOWEEN Article by: CompE|Photography: Cara Paine Hard to believe we are approaching Halloween, especially in the year 2020, when every single day feels like Trick-OrTreat. But October 31 is soon here-- nowhere is this more evident than in Second Life, where dozens of haunts already await. Below are three of the best places to explore things that go bump in the night to start your spooky season right. Diatraland Halloween 2020 Simply stunning” best describes SL’s newest carnival, site, and overall spooky place. Just ask the dancing skeletons at the entrance. A lot of planning went into this creature feature seven months in the making. “We took our time with this one,” said Deschutes Diavolo, co-owner alongside Ireda Anatra. Favorite attractions are the Haunted Mansion, an SL icon; the Psycho Path Roller Coaster; and Christine. Plan on spending at least two hours exploring and enjoying the attractions. Every venture is chockfull of rides, exhibits, and hands-on activities for you and your ghoul friend.

“We’ve built and designed many parks over the years,” says Deschutes. “Every Halloween, we would set aside an area of the park for spooky themed rides and attractions. It was never really a lot, just enough to acknowledge the day. As we did this, I think we began to realize we really enjoyed that stuff. The seed was planted and grew a little bit each year. Finally, we knew we wanted to do a full-sized Halloween park.” From bumper car rides in the monster-laden Black Lagoon, to old crumbling graveyards where the dead and buried don’t always stay that way, this place signifies Halloween. As you meander the haunted streets, make sure you poke around. Many objects are interactive but not always obviously so. Take a chance, give it a click-- if you dare. Haunted House at Serenity Springs Serenity” is anything but in this classic haunted house and more that scares the cyber heebie jeebies out of virtual visitors. Walk through the squeaking front door and be warned.

The good, the bad, and the ugly come at you with everything they got-- and they ‘got’ plenty of experience in doing so. At 13 years old, Haunted House on Serenity Springs is one of the oldest Halloween sites in Second life. “Time flies when you’re having fun,” says owner Jessie Jacques wth a smile. Actually lots of things fly here-- bats, goblins, ghosts, witches; just look up, chances are something menacing is hovering nearby. And watch where you sit. The couches will eat you. This place is Halloween at max speed. Many delightfully gruesome scenes and presentations await like a good classical horror movie, except you are the star. “Every room of the house has a different scene,” Jessie adds. “Everyone, including kids, loves it.” And what’s not to love? Freddy Krueger is here, as are scenes from Poltergeist and The Shining. All rooms, hallways, and tunnels are accentuated by creatures of the night. Many accompany you on exploration-- regardless if you want them to or not. Cue the evil laugh.

“Be ready to be scared and spooked at Serenity Springs House of Horror,” Jessie advises. “Keep an eye out for all the skeletons lurking around, as well as the zombies, ghosts, and the scariest of clowns just waiting for your arrival. Have Fun!” The Haunted And so the adventure begins,” warns a garish message on a sign planted in Carnevil. The Halloween amusement park could be a stand-alone attraction, but it is not: 23 more fill Haunted.

(sweetsister.silver) says about the two-level, multi-sensation sim. Haunted is so expansive that avatar strategy is required to see it all. The best plan is to take the 20-minute overview train ride with stops at various points of interest. The locals will keep you company: bat-winged skeletons flutter around your railcar. Along the route, cemetery residents peer from opened graves, and other creatures wait around every turn.

The woods are full of ghoulies; some admire the beautiful trees while others hang from them, giving new meaning to the branch office. In addition to Carnevil, other points of interest include Scary Swamp, Secret Cave, Witches Cross, and many, many others. Attractions and events are ever-changing, so visit often for the latest updates. “I love things that are spooky and wanted to share my love of spooky with others,” Sweet says. She has built many SL ‘Haunted’s over the years. This is her latest. Her interest in the spooky dates back to a classic TV show, Dark Shadows. “I watched it as a child,’’ she notes. “It started my love of Haunted things, and I would say it was my first inspiration.” Sweet’s inspiration is our gain. She expanded on the Dark Shadow themes for an eye-popping, creepy good time. These are but three of Halloween Trick-or-Treats ready to explore in Second Life. As Haunted’s Grumpy Goblin says when he greets every visitor: “Bring your friends. You may need them.”

ETEREA Some places attract visitors with perfect rebuilds of Real Life (RL) landmarks, while others simply offer beautiful landscapes. Some are amazing recreations capturing nature or architecture from reality, others are inspired by art and fantasy. Eterea is a blend of both: some objects and buildings appear very realistic, others derive from a place of fantasy and imagination. Glass buildings are filled with well-made furnishings, creatively and naturally placed despite the rounded architecture. A sense of harmony fills the space. The main room sports a beautiful piano and a sitting area. The place reminds one of a library, somewhere to sit and read up on topics that are, perhaps, not that straight-forward. However, the most remarkable thing is the staircase that leads to nowhere. Those staircases turn out to be quite a dominant, recurring theme at Eterea, visually intense as they lead to nowhere. For artists, creating objects that produce strongly contradicting feelings in the observer is rather common. By definition, stairs are passages between different elevations or levels. Hence, they provide connectedness; in a broader sense, they even hint at some kind of affinity to be cherished. Letting them lead to nowhere is an alien and uncomfortable concept. What does it matter if the stairs lead to nowhere?Interpretation is up to the observer. Logically, one might argue this renders those stairs useless. Others might say they offer a visualization of the afterlife or nirvana. Another interpretation is that they are a manifestation of the current zeitgeist. How so? Wherever you might live, contradicting worldviews are observed that go far beyond the political labels of ‘Conservative’ or ‘Liberal’. What if the ground represents reality and the stairs individual ‘ideological’ bubbles? Note that they have doors-- at least when looked at from the ground. As soon as one is far enough up the stairs, connection between the different pathways disappears-- every chance for communication seems lost. In RL, that scenario would be enhanced by Social Media and Algorithms that ensure one only gets the information that fits their bubble.

Of course, this is only one possible interpretation of these brilliantly vivid stairs providing distinct mental images. This particular interpretation may not be what the creator had in mind. Eterea has much more to see. “Eterea” means ‘otherworldly,’ ‘immaterial,’ even ‘vulnerable’; the word is a female adjective in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. The expression derives from the Latin term aetherius, which means “of or pertaining to the ether, the sky, or the air or upper air; ethereal.” Based on this meaning, a certain multi-level, even multi-dimensional interpretation appears reasonable. Coqueta Georgia created this romantic, photogenic fantasy sim. Coqueta, a photographer herself, had photography in mind when creating this captivating world. Many details are laid out to create both photo spots and romantic sitting areas. Some locations even have a view, enhancing immersion into this three dimensional space. Other spots attract visitors with their playful detail. Bicycles are laid out all over the sim, including one with a little cargo platform that is critically inspected by a cat. Perhaps Coqueta is referencing lost technology, as she did not choose a Maserati or supercomputer. A seemingly useless, partially downed power line underlines the subtle eeriness of the place-- another aspect being that the visitor has just entered the world of a fairy tale. The place appears dreamy, almost vulnerable, with various floating objects in the sky: bubbles, boats, chairs, umbrellas, and of course, the stairs. A flying whale offers fly-over tours, allowing visitors to enjoy the different dimensions of the space. When exploring, make sure you look to the ground as well as the sky to get the full impression of this brilliantly-created world, and let the magic of the place take your mind on a stroll. Much of Eterea is up to your imagination. Share it with a loved one and connect your imagination, an extremely powerful way to rekindle a relationship or spark a new one.

SPOOKTACULAR TRADITIONS OF HALLOWEEN Why do we love Halloween so much? Is it because we can dress up and just pretend—or, perhaps, is it more a spiritual experience, something deep and dark that compels our spirit to dive into the otherworld… Then again, let’s face it, you can be whoever you want; that is just pure fun. These days, Halloween is a time of parties (masks included, thank you very much) and pranks, candy and laughter, doorbells and dances, playing dress-up and putting on crazy hair and make up. It is a celebration embraced in real life and second life by people from all over the world. This should come as no surprise, because Halloween has a long history. The best historical documents put Halloween’s origins back to when Europe’s Celtic people celebrated their “New Year,” called Samhain. At this time of year, the Celtic people gathered around bonfires, wore costumes, and remembered their ancestors. Celts believed that on Samhain Eve (known now as Halloween), spirits from demons to fairies to the newly departed-- alongside a myriad of other creatures, good and bad -- walked the Earth again. The Celts believed that the veil between the world of the living and the world of the dead was the thinnest at this time, making it easy for the spirits and souls of the dead to return. As for costumes, most historical research shows that the Celts probably wore animal skins to confuse spirits and to avoid being possessed. They also wore masks to impersonate and remember their dead ancestors. An early form of trick-or-treating saw costumed Celts go from house to house, engaging in fun and silly behavior in exchange for food and drink. By the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV decreed November 1st as “All Saints’ Day,” dedicated to celebrating the faithful departed, including all of the saints.

European immigrants brought Halloween to America in the 1880s when Anoka, Minnesota hosted the earliest official Halloween celebrations in the country. Today, Halloween has been transformed into the flashy, fun fantasy-- and sometimes frightful horror fest-- that we know and love. Many supernatural traditions go hand-in-hand with Halloween can be so much fun to recreate in SL. Jack-O-Lanterns originated in Ireland using turnips and a legend about a man named Stingy Jack. Stingy Jack captured the devil but let him go on the condition that Jack would not go to hell. When Jack died, heaven didn’t want him either, and he was condemned to wander the Earth as a ghost for all eternity. The devil gave Jack a piece of coal and a carved turnip to light his way. Eventually, locals began to carve faces into gourds and light them to keep evil spirits away! Then there is bobbing for apples: part of a courting ritual where young men and women would be able to foretell their future relationships. Not to be left out is the black cat that became associated as a witch’s familiar. Sadly, some people still fear black cats, and they tend to be the most overlooked pets in animal shelters.

If you are dancing around a bonfire, then keep an eye out for bats-- they are said to be the harbingers of death!

O So this year, don your most frightening or fanciful costume, and have a spooktacular good time. We hope some of these creepy things about Halloween, its history and traditions, give new meaning to the way you celebrate All Hallows Eve.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD This month’s article is a continuation of my series where I scour events for fantastic items. So far, I have covered houses, furniture, and decor. This one is all about the food; if you are setting up your home and displaying it so it looks realistic, then you are going to need to add cookies, cake, breakfast, and beverages to give it that ‘lived in’ look. The great thing about food items is that they can be used indoors or outdoors. You can showcase them in the kitchen, on a dining room table, or as a set-up picnic or barbecue outside to compliment your garden setting. I will admit that this month I had trouble finding food items, so I am guessing that some months are leaner than others when it comes to cuisine. I also had trouble getting into one event, so I didn’t get to photograph any of their items. You win some, you lose some. I was hoping to see some Halloween items, but they were severely lacking. Perhaps you can enjoy some of the items listed below at your Halloween parties this year. They would all work on different levels. Have fun adding tasty goodies to your tables this month. Make sure you get around the events. Some of these rounds will be finished by the time this article comes out, but it gives you a look at what is out there and available.

DAY OF THE DEAD |DIA DE LOS MUERTOS Understanding Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, requires us to journey 3,000 years into the past. There, we find the first civilization to celebrate: the Culhua-Mexica, commonly known as the Aztecs. A nomadic tribe in Mesoamerica, they’re written histories describe a culture of hunter-gatherers, while their agricultural accomplishments led to the reclamation of swampland and elaborate irrigation systems. The CulhuaMexica practiced a polytheistic religion, including the goddess of death Mictecacihuatl. As Queen of the Underworld, Mictecacihuatl guarded the bones of the dead and presided over the festival of the dead. This festival lasted for a month, believed to take place in August. When Spanish Roman Catholics arrived in Mesoamerica, they quickly rejected the pantheon of the native peoples and moved to replace Mictecacihuatl’s festival with their own holidays: All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, celebrated in November. From there, Dia de los Muertos has grown to be a truly unique Mexican cultural experience (though it is also celebrated in other parts of the world, such as the United States and other regions of Latin America). Day of the Dead observances vary across the region, from intimate family gatherings to larger, city-wide events with vibrant parades. It has also been featured prominently in popular culture. In fact, UNESCO included Dia de los Muertos in their ‘Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ in 2008 due to its growing popularity. Some of the traditions include decorating the graves of loved ones with marigolds (cempasuchitl), pictures, decorative papers with ornate cut outs (papel picado), foods such as pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and champurrado (spiced hot chocolate), candles, and the highly decorative sugar skulls (Calaveras de Azúcar). Some families build shrines, or ofrendas, in their homes instead. In addition to representing earth, air, fire, and water, each of the items used to decorate hold special significance for the celebrants, spirits and still living alike:

Article |Photography by: YHISHARA CERISE Marigolds held significance to the Aztecs for both medicinal purposes and celebrations. The celebratory nature of the flower is based on a romantic Aztec legend. In the myth, lovers Xótchitl and Huitzilin would often hike up a mountain to offer flowers to the sun god, Tonatiuh, and pledge their devotion to each other. When Huitzilin is tragically killed in battle, Xótchitl begs Tonatiuh to reunite them. Her pleas and the couple’s devotion to Tonatiuh and each other touch the sun god. He turns Xótchitl into a marigold, fashioned after the sun, and reincarnates Huitzilin as a hummingbird. Legend has it that for as long as hummingbirds and marigolds exist, the lovers will not be parted. Additionally, tradition states that the bright colors and pungent scent of the marigold help guide deceased loved ones to the festivals. The pictures and decorations honor the departed, mementos of their life or symbols of what was important to them when they were living. The photographs also help guide souls to the altars in their honor, allowing them to cross over and find their families and loved ones. The food is set out to offer sustenance to the spirits and help them on their way through the many challenges of Mictlān (the Underworld). Food items include both the traditional pan de muerto and personal favorites of the deceased alongside bottles of water and of tequila. Spirits are believed to be thirsty when they arrive. Additionally, salt may be laid out in the form of a cross, to both help quench thirst and purify spirits that have visited the mortal realm. Candles are set out to help the spirits find their way back so that they can join the celebration. Papel Picado is used to represent air. The small holes are also believed to create roadways that help spirits move through the Lands of the Dead and the Living. Made of thin, fragile papers, the papel picado are said to represent the fragility of life. While they can be purchased premade, some families prefer to prepare the art by hand.

Sugar skulls are, perhaps, the most recognized and popular symbols for Dia de los Muertos. Made of sugar, meringue powder, and water, calaveras are molded into their skull shape and then finished with royal icing as well as many other decorations. While they sound like the perfect sweet treat, they are not for us mortals but rather for any spirits in attendance! The smaller ones are meant for the children (angelitos) who are welcomed back November 1st, and the larger ones are for the adult spirits (difuntos) who are welcomed back on November 2nd.
