This month I am heading out and about again to find some amazing sims for you to enjoy. I think it is so important to step outside of our SL norm and discover the incredible talent and imagination of the landscape designers. These are the unsung heroes of SL who bring together all of the best from our home and garden designers to create the sims that make us say, “WOW!”
Today I am going to bring you some sims I discovered while out and about taking pics. Each of these photo-worthy spots are part of a group called The Nature Collective.
“The Nature Collective is a Second Life group created with the goal of cultivating a community around sims, spaces and projects which share a common focus on nature. It is our hope to foster a movement to help people engage and reconnect with the wonder and joy of nature, in the virtual world and beyond.”
They also have regular goings-on including a Coffee Collective, Shutterbug Club, a Rails, Trails & Sails event, as well as two yearly seasonal hunts in spring/ summer and autumn/winter.
The Rails, Trails & Sails event “takes explorers on tours by rail, on one of the many great lines traversing the grid, on horseback, bike, or foot along trails through Mainland and various The Nature Collective member locations and through SL’s amazing waterways.” I am pretty keen to sign up for this!
I was also told by Emm Vintner, the founder of TNC, that they will soon be adding another event called Trails ‘n Tails where participants will have the opportunity to hike with dogs and other pets. This is right up my alley!
Today I am taking you on a tour of just a few places that are a part of The Nature Collective. I chose them randomly but I tried to pick from the different explorer lists. I had so much fun horse riding, surfing, ziplining and just enjoying being out in SL nature!
Also, rather than me giving my layperson’s description of each place, I am sharing the actual descriptions given by the owners, but I will add my thoughts as well!

Burrow Wood County
- “Down the old dusty roads is a small town slowly forgotten place. Travelers often finding themselves in the middle of nowhere come here for the overnight stay or scenic views.” I love the slightly creepy, rundown vibe of this town. No 5 Star hotels here, just a hotel and some trailers for your accommodation needs. I almost expected there to be an old house on a hill overlooking the town…
AUGUST
Grauvik, Iceland
“Photogenic Adult sim and home to M-1 Art Poses main store. The sim changes often as we like to keep it fresh and inspirational to all photographers.” This is the sim that started my interest in The Nature Collective. I absolutely love this stark, windswept island and am quite keen to move into one of the houses dotted around the landscape. I wonder if anyone would notice!

Green Story
“Green story is a beautiful, calm, and peaceful place for everyone. It’s a place to relax or have a romantic time with a loved one. A perfect place to take pictures and create memories.” You may have noticed that I love rain. This is one of the three places on my tour where you might need a raincoat or an umbrella. Or, if you are like me, you will just enjoy walking and exploring in the rain.
Kia Kaha
“Kia Kaha is a Māori phrase meaning “Stay Strong” A subtle reminder to the core surfing family. Horseback down to the bay for killer surfing or Zip-lines from the rainforest to the bar. Explore Kia Kaha! Namaste.” This sim is also the home of Home to the Vibrations Surf Alliance and the waves in the bay are definitely for the surfers out there. I didn’t surf here, but I did go horse riding and ziplining. Loads of fun.
AUGUST
Le'Forest Retreat
“Once a bustling train depot of adventurers, the Le’eaf Forest Retreat has been reclaimed by mother nature and of course caffeine. An umbrella waits for your arrival as you wander through the rain, seeking shelter and a warm beverage.” This is another rainy spot, but you can seek refuge in the cafe if you prefer. I quite enjoyed wandering about as there were plenty of bunnies to pat and I even discovered a very cool outdoor movie spot as well.

Moorcroft
“Soulful Winery and Vineyards at Moorcroft is a peaceful place to enjoy vintage Moorcroft DFS wines, harvested and aged with love. A joyful spot to share time with family and friends, within the gorgeous town of Moorcroft in Sansara. Stop in today!” The photo I took to show you Moorcroft is of the entrance to this lovely wee winery and I almost didn’t need to go any further. I am glad I did though as the rustic buildings and restaurant are just divine and the perfect spot for dinner with someone special.
The Charming Quirks Galleria,
PerSempre
This is a gorgeous spot on a cliff overlooking the sea with its own private beach as well. It is a peaceful place with a focus on wellbeing and relaxation from the pools to the walkways and the little nooks for just sitting and taking in the views and ambiance. I enjoyed sitting for a bit by the waterfall and listening to sounds of nature. A great place to go and restore.
I really want to encourage you all to get out and about in Second Life and enjoy some incredible spots that really do showcase what makes Second Life fun and enjoyable. Happy wandering.

Art Appreciation 101
Coco St. George
From the moment our forefather Pookh stamped the palm of his hand on the walls of his cave to the time Banksy felt compelled to do something not too different in the streets of London, art has been a key factor in people’s lives. We could even go further and say it’s been a decisive element in the evolution of mankind.
We can only speculate about the motivation the cavemen had to decorate the walls of their caves with all sorts of paintings. Some think it served a magical purpose: If the drawings on the wall depicted an animal being hunted down, that animal would be hunted down also in real life. But there was also a will to preserve their memories. The paintings on the wall, thus, would serve as a pictorial record of the most memorable exploits achieved by our forefathers. And we cannot dismiss a simpler explanation: Cavemen decorated their caves with paintings so they looked prettier. Just like we do in our modern lives, where we hang the portraits of our loved departed to preserve their memory, a sacred image to feel the connection with a higher power, or the painting of a landscape just because it’s beautiful.
Art has been with us for so long that we could say it is part of our DNA, and we couldn’t imagine a life without it. Nor can we imagine a Second Life without it. That’s why we can find a lot of sims devoted to different manifestations of art— and some of them are worth visiting more than once.
When we think of the aesthetic pleasure of watching paintings, we think of museums and galleries. And if you’re looking for art, you can’t miss The Vordun, one of the best-organized art museums in SL. You only need to see this imposing building to realize these people know what they are doing. The museum
features several temporary exhibitions, so you can visit it often to watch the new pieces.
As you cross the threshold, you are offered an experience you need to accept in order to get a HUD. This HUD will be your audio guide in the main gallery, where you can currently admire 300 years of paintings by the greatest European masters. A number identifies each of the 28 paintings. After clicking that number in your HUD, you’ll hear an explanation (which also appears as text in nearby chat) about that particular painting.
There is also a room devoted to one painting: “Netherlandish Proverbs” by Pieter Brueghel, the Elder, a piece of art full to the brim with people, animals, and all kinds of things. If you look very closely, you’ll find depicted 112 Netherlandish proverbs in this work. Of course, in this case, there is also a HUD to guide you: press Start to make the camera focus on a particular part of the scene and have the proverb explained in chat. Keep clicking Next to see all of them. Even those who can’t speak Flemish (“Flemish Proverbs” is another name for this painting, as well as “The Blue Cloak”) will certainly enjoy the wit and wisdom embodied in these sayings.
The museum also features some temporary exhibits; currently, you can appreciate and enjoy the art of Claude Monet. Here you’ll admire his historic painting, Impression, Sunrise which gave rise to a new school of art called Impressionism. Something more to know about Monet: he led a life rife with significant challenges, including the great financial hardships he underwent while his wife was very ill. At one point, while he was painting, a bailiff came along to collect some debts. Monet had no

way to repay the money he owed, so he offered a painting. Eventually, that painting made its way to an art dealer who sold it for a considerable sum, thus providing Monet with the financial stability he so badly needed.
The Vordun has several galleries, and you’ll want to visit them all— especially the one devoted to tapestries, located on the second floor. And before you leave, remember to visit the gift shop to take home a souvenir from this wonderful place.
Walking through the galleries and admiring the majestic building, you can’t help but wonder what our lives (both analog and digital) would be like without the wonderful gift of art. And so, we recognize we’re lucky just to be able to appreciate these works of art from the comfort of our homes.

Briarwood Estates which is a family roleplay community that as some amenities like Evergarden Equestrian, Briarwood Mounted Police, and the biggest the Briarwood Wildlife Refuge which is on one of their seven sims. Briarwood Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife refuge within Second Life. It is one of the very first wildlife refuges operated by Briarwood Estates and in Second Life. The refuge protects more than 14 acres of marshes, lakes, grasslands, and woodlands. Here you will find deer, red foxes, horses, donkeys, black bears, cows, and many other great animals!
I was visiting Briarwood not knowing what to expect when seeing a Wildlife Refuge in Secondlife. I did not know something like this could exist, so I was pretty excited to take a look around. It didn’t take long to rez in. I was on this gorgeous dirt path that had white picket fences and a donation box. It was honestly one of the most surreal but relaxed atmosphere I could possibly think of.
After I explored for a bit, I got to sit down with Frankie Foxpaws, the owner of Briarwood to ask him some questions about these amazing sims that he has created and continues to work on.
The first question I had to ask is, “Who are you in this amazing world of Second Life?”
Frankie’s answered, “I am just a creative soul who really enjoys that aspect of Second Life. In addition to owning Briarwood Estates, I also own Magnolia Hill Artistry & Design, a landscape and interior design company. I joined SL in 2008 and quickly fell in love with not only landscape design but sim design and interior design as well. Admittedly, landscape and sim design are my absolute passion within SL though. I have spent all of my second life doing one or the other and have never grown tired of
it. It brings me my greatest joy inworld.”
I stared in disblief as I listened to Frankie with all the history he had going for him in creating these amazing sims, so my next question was a no brainer!
I asked, “Wow, you have a great resume there. So, why is Briarwood important to your vision in Second Life?”
Frankie smiled and answered, “Briarwood is important to my vision in Second Life primarily because I am able to not only create, but nurture and grow a community that either shares a similar vision or appreciates the vision of making meaningful connections that I have. The sense of community can often get lost inworld and that is something that I would like to help counteract. While I get a great deal of satisfaction from being able to flex my creative muscles with designing a sim from start to finish over and over, I really enjoy connecting with others within the community, forging new friendships and collaborating with others on projects within the community as well as with other communities.”
I smiled listening to him again, “I’m glad you found meaning to create Briarwood here in Second Life, I can tell a lot of heart went into this wonderful sim and I’m sure into the estate it self. So, why did you create the Briarwood Wildlife Refuge with Briarwood?”
Frankie nodded proud of Briarwood, “The wildlife refuge came about because I wanted to begin creating areas within the community that current residents as well others who may not prefer to live in a residential community can enjoy as well, without having to reside here. I went over a few ideas and finally settled on the Wildlife Refuge.”
I smiled listening to his answer, “I can understand BRIARWOOD ESTATES

that, I love coming to roleplay sims even if I don’t live there. I think it’s fun and can give different experiences to those who want experiences like this.” She shifted a little bit, “Still on the topic of the refuge, what has the Wildlife Refuge done in terms of bringing awareness to the grid?”
Frankie smiled giving his best answer in knowing the refuge was still a new project, “The Wildlife Refuge is still very new and what I view as a passion project that is ever evolving. Currently, we have been adding in informational kiosks on the current animals that we have on display on the sim. These kiosks list information such as the species, their diet, and also includes if they are endangered or not. One fun thing that happens at the Wildlife Refuge is actually a scavenger hunt of sorts that one of the managers of Briarwood Estates, Meaarcane Resident started. She owns Little Goslings Daycare with in the community and creates these super cute little pictures of flora and fauna species and hides them around the refuge for her kiddos to find as an activity. Each picture you find will give you information/facts about that flora or fauna species. On average there are 6 hidden pictures for each hunt. This has been a wonderful and fun addition to the wildlife refuge. For anyone who would like to do one of the hunts, there is a poster attached to the information board at the landing point of the refuge. Currently the hunt underway is the Ladybug hunt!”
I smile and laugh a bit, “Hunts on a refuge sim? Wow! That’s got to be the most fun ever. I might have to come back and check that out.” She grinned giggling, “Does the Wildlife Refuge support any real-life charity?”
Frankie answered, “The Wildlife Refuge does not currently support any real-life charity. That is something that I would definitely be open to exploring if or when the sim started to fully support itself financially.”
I nodded, “I understand that and agree fully. My last question for you is what are some of the future plans for the Wildlife Refuge?”
Frankie smiled with excitement in his voice, “I didn’t realize that I would have future plans for the Wildlife Refuge until about a week or two after I finished it. The more I explored it and the more I spoke with visitors, the more I have been inspired. It is currently a homestead which limits a bit what I can do overall. So I would love to eventually be
able to upgrade the sim to a full sim and add in more animals as well as more in depth landscaping. There will be another sim coming that will be an extension of the Refuge to some degree. It will have the same feel of the wildlife refuge and house animals as well but in addition to that it will also have some cabin or cottage type rentals and a few camping locations. I am hoping to break ground on that within the next few weeks and really look forward to it.”
I smiled listening to the expansion plans, “Wow! Well, Frankie I can’t wait to see the future for the Briarwood Wildlife Refuge sim and would love to see it when you full finish upgrading it when that time comes! It seems like it would be a perfect spot to have a home. Thank you so much for your time!”
Frankie smiled back and nodded, “Thank you.”
After the interview, I looked around once more taking in the aesthetics of the sim. I smiled knowing what Briarwood Wildlife Refuge could become and open so many doors for people who are looking for a fun family day adventure. Briarwood Wildlife Refuge should be visited by everyone as it subliminally also brings awareness to the real life refuges and has replicated it beautifully on the virtual level.

Vino. The very word evokes a smile, a feel-good sensation, and memories in progress. The grapes of joy are poured over celebrations, milestones, and gatherings of family and friends. Indeed, with wine, any place is a happy place— and one such place is The Winery, where Second Life celebrates the fermented fruit of fantasy. Flanked by barrels of brew and vivacious vineyards, The Winery is the epitome of spirited grapes. With a bar, fine dining, and more, this one-stop beverage shop covers all checkpoints. Connoisseurs, aficionados, and those wanting a nice drink are the target market, which covers just about everybody.
The teleport lands visitors at the front entrance. Customers have a choice, self-serving or roleplay. “The Winery is full-pay-as-you-go fine dining for regular, mystory, and xeolife diners. It is managed by HecateWic of Wic Foods,” notes BOSL shop owner and creator, Jennifer Steele. “In addition, there are beautiful vistas.”
She continues, “It’s a romantic spot for that special somebody or a great place for an afternoon out. There’s also wine stomping vats and lots of other things to explore.”
Jennifer also notes, “All of our tables are automatically set to self-serve unless there is a reservation sign on the table. The tables with reservation signs are rented by our regular patrons.”
On entering, a cozy fireplace embedded in stonework is the focal point. The massive structure extends through the second floor. Wine racks are everywhere, featuring bottles of various vintages. Over-stuffed chairs and linen-lined tables invite sipping and sampling. And then we move upstairs.
Of course, wine is also available on the second floor,
but so is fine dining near a piano bar. The kitchen is visible as workers prepare the night’s fare. Fine art adorns every wall. One has the option of dining in a more open setting or in little nooks for more private times.
Jennifer is uniquely qualified to bring adventures in vino to grape fruition. In real life, she is a renovation specialist, artist, and private chef. She resides in Ontario, Canada, in Niagara’s wine country. Her talents are exemplified in SL creations, including this one.
The owner credits her creativity to a mix of home learning and formal training. “I had a mentor at first, then I took classes at Builders Brewery, and the rest was self-taught,” she recalls.
About six months after joining SL, the previously mentioned mentor noticed her talent for scripting and building. “I was encouraged to learn everything I could about it,” Jennifer adds.
In addition, she says, “I’m in love with the buildings and vineyards and have a knack for building winerelated venues.”
The Winery has the most attentive details of any place in SL. Each table has settings of fruit, candles, and other soothing centerpieces. Creased napkins, crisp table clothes, fresh flowers, and plants punctuate every room.
Instructions are offered on how to dine, sit, and eat. Oh, and don’t forget the kids; the winery has booster chairs.
Once seated, click on your plate, navigate through the menu, and choose an item by clicking on it. If you wish to browse, click on the menu again. Another category opens with more delicious food

choices. Caution: drooling on your computer may void its warranty.
When the food is rezzed, click on the food to eat it (Munching animations are clicked in your chair). Of course, there is a wide assortment of beverages. To drink, click on the coaster. Click it again to select your choice.
To consume the drink, pick it up; if you’re Xeolife or MyStory, it must be attached to consume. When attached, click it again. Drinks are bottomless. Then, pay your bill at the table.
Or try roleplay dining.
“We provide a special roleplay dining service for you and your guest(s) by reservation,” notes Jennifer. “The food is professionally served, catered to your needs, and attended to in your special evening.”
Reservations are made by contacting Elsmere Hecate Wic. A time is scheduled, and servers and chefs are booked. Reservations can include personalized gift bags of food and wine.
Other amenities include smooth jazz music, Bento couples dancing, and an open mic if you wish to book your own live entertainment for a group party.
As for future engagements: “Coming this autumn will be full wine tasting stations,” says Jennifer. “It will have a HUD that tracks favorite wines and take-home wine. In addition, we are planning wine tasting classes, hosted by BOSL. This is a joint effort between myself, Wic Foods, and BOSL.”
It is all there waiting to be served. Drop by for a quick drink or spend an evening with friends or someone special. The Winery offers all.
Jennifer emphatically believes, “Having the Winery here adds to the style and education of BOSL visitors. One of the better things in life is enjoying a nice glass of wine in good company.”
We agree. Cheers!

MOTOWN
Sarah E. Brenham
We have inhabited the Earth for thousands of years, and the only thing that has been consistent during all of this time is change. Unfortunately, the more we evolve as human beings, the more we seem to forget about the things that made us who we are today. To help combat this problem, the team at MoTown is doing their part to help preserve a piece of our history.

Now, I know your question: Sarah, how does music, especially that genre, play a role in our past? Well, I have a two-part answer for you. The first is that music has been around for almost as long as we have. Music has always been a way to bring people together and to highlight different life experiences. The second part of my answer blends into the first, in regards to music often being a vehicle for individuals to express what happens during their time here on this planet. Motown is no exception. The genre of Motown was created on June 7, 1958 by Berry Gordy Jr. as a way to get folks interested in Jazz. Over the years, Motown has morphed into what we know it to be today. Between the tambourines harmonizing with back beats and electric guitars paired with the singing style “call-and-response,” it is no wonder this type of music became popular. All things that trend, though, are often quickly forgotten. That is why MoTown is trying their best to popularize the genre once again.

At MoTown, you will be greeted by the delicious smells of various food options. After fueling up on some grub, why not be brave and karaoke to some of your favorite Motown songs? After getting tuckered out from all of that singing, you can end your day there with a movie.
