THE ART OF REBELLION
tribute to Vivienne Westwood
Yhishara
Vivienne Swire was born in Tintwistle, Derbyshire, England, two years after World War II began. When she was 17, she and her family relocated to Harrow, Greater London, where she enrolled in the University of Westminster. Intending to take jewelry and silversmithing classes, she soon felt those skills needed to be more practical. Instead, she chose to become a teacher, a socially acceptable career choice for a young woman. Four years later, she met Derek Westwood and fulfilled other socially acceptable pursuits for a woman: marriage and having a baby. In all ways, she was conforming to what society demanded. However, there was one small problem: Vivienne was not a traditional woman.
In exciting London, it wasn’t long before she met others with non-traditional mindsets, including Malcolm McLaren, with whom she began romantic and business partnerships. She soon divorced, became a single mother, and started selling her jewelry. They collaborated on several collections: Pirate, Savages, Buffalo/ Nostalgia of Mud, Punkature, Witches, and World’s End (1984), with the last one being Clint Eastwood. The collections were shown in Paris and London from 1981 to 1985.
They were a tour de force when revolutionizing fashion for those seeking to rebel. To sell their designs, they took over a shop that became punk central, where those involved in the culture met up to find great clothes and network with those who were interested in the music. One such group was the Sex Pistols, which Malcolm managed, and Vivienne designed the costumes.
During this time, their romantic partnership ended. Badly. In one interview, she recalls that Malcolm had suggested that she was “just the seamstress” in the business and that she should release a collection under her name – leaving him out of it. Perhaps Vivienne took it as a challenge – to succeed where he wished she would fail. If that was the case, how wrong he was! Vivienne became one of the biggest names in fashion for her fresh takes on old designs, such as the crinoline cut short to mid-thigh and dubbed the “mini-crini.” She was sought after by people like Richard Branson to design uniforms for Virgin Atlantic and asked to design the academic dresses for degree earners at King’s College by Patricia Rawlings (then Chairperson of the college). She has designed for royalty and the financial elite and dressed some of the most renowned models of the last several decades: Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss being just two of them. She was even made a Dame of the British Empire.
But being a fashion maven was only part of the passions of this incredible woman. She was determined to be a force for change. She found that two things gave her opportunities to do that: education and activism.
She took public stands for nuclear disarmament, animal welfare, civil liberties, and vegetarianism against fracking, capitalism, and overconsumption. While it seems contradictory, considering being the head of an haute couture fashion house, she had made positive changes to offset the impact creating her clothing and accessories has on the world. These positive changes impact every part of the production, from sourcing to creation to packaging to shipping to backend support such
a

as banking, investments, and employee benefits. While her business side wanted people to buy her pieces, she adopted the company philosophy of “Buy Less, Choose Well, Makes it Last.”
She was also passionate about education, and that philosophy was present in her design and private lives. She once said, “The more you know, the more you know what hasn’t been done. The more you know how you can manipulate things. The more you know, the kind of story things will tell you, the feeling they have.” As unbelievable as it may sound, she sometimes was bored of fashion, and it was those potential stories she could tell with a stitch, a fabric choice, a style that kept her interested. She also felt that it was her purpose in life to understand the world. She did that by being a voracious reader, and her incentive to “finish this pair of trousers” was that she could then read her book.
“I want to understand the world I live in so that by the time I die, I’m less stupid than I am now. I mean, that’s what life’s about.” Enjoy the book, Vivienne.

There are many names for what we will look at today: decor, knick-knacks, ornamentation, adornments, accessories, and whatnot. However, as you know, they are also the icing on the cake for home decoration. They turn houses into homes and the mundane into magnificent.
Luckily, Second Life has a veritable buffet for home and garden items, and the dessert table is full of tasty decor delights for us to enjoy in our own SL homes. And the best thing about them in SL? No dusting whatsoever!
To get a taste of what is out there in the decor world, I visited some SL events to find out what is new and exciting. I also wanted to show you a wide range of items so you can see knick-knacks for the bathroom, library, lounge, and kitchen, as well as some that you could use anywhere in your home.
I would love to hear about your favorite decor items and designers. I love finding new stores and designers, and I know I have yet to scratch the surface of all the talent in SL. Happy decorating, everyone, and have a fabulous February.

Apple Fall and Fancy Decor @ Equal10
These lovely kitchen items are for the kitchen, but also amongst them are some that could be used in the lounge or bedroom. I am a massive fan of anything kitchen related, so the cups and tea maker would be on my shopping list for this set. I also love that you can choose your tea flavor to make it how you like it. Just a dash of milk for me, please.
Broken Arrows @ Equal10
Broken Arrows is renowned for its decor, and I have many items in my inventory. Most of it is kitchen focused, but I love their whatnots for other home areas too. A case in point is the gorgeous bathroom items on display. Think how luxurious your bathroom would look with these jars, loofahs, combs, brushes, lotions, and soaps. I would choose green soap. I hope it smells like lemongrass or green tea.

FEBRUARY
Chai @ Dubai
Firstly, that rhymes, and secondly, these items would look divine in any room in your home. I have cheated a bit on these as the shelf comes with all the decor as you see it, but I had to include these in this article as they are too lovely not to. Each of the three item packs here is called Agape, and I am in love with them.
FEBRUARY
Disorderly @ Collabor88
Books are my new favorite decor item, and you will notice that I use many of them in my home and garden photos. This is because they make a home feel lived in and personal. There is a lot of book decor around now for just that reason. I was rapt when I came across these books from Disorderly as they are tintable, which means you can make them whatever colors you want to match the rest of the room they are in or add a variety of colors to your shelf, bedside cabinet, or floor!
Elm @ Kustom9
This entrance set from Elm is lovely and contains many decor items that all work together to create the look. Each detail is perfect, from the handbag and camera to the rug and flat cap stool. Imagine walking into your SL home and having this greet you every day. It would also wow your guests. Ensure they wipe their feet before they come in, so they don’t mess up the rug.
FEBRUARY
Merak in the Saturday Sale
I adore two things in that subtitle: Merak and the Saturday Sale. My inventory is crammed with Merak items, and their decor pieces get utilized in my home a lot. This kitchen set is now also on my list and will be making an appearance in many kitchen photos in the future. I love that you get the black and white cups and all the cool jars and syrup bottles. Keep an eye out for this set-in future articles or if you are a regular follower of my blog!

Nutmeg @ Access
I am a proud Nutmeg/Reka group member, and I love all their furniture and decor items. I knew these were Nutmeg items, with the clean lines and muted tones, as soon as I saw them. The desk and accessories would look perfect in a home office, lounge setting, or bedroom. I love the photography included, and I hope you noticed the books stacked on the desk shelf. Very in vogue right now.
DATING AS ONE OF THE FINE ARTS
We couldn’t say it was love at first sight. Love is such a strong and heavy word that it may sink forever the very object to which it is attached. Words have their own agenda, you know, and you should use them with caution. Let’s say, instead, that it was an attraction at first sight.
She was dancing at a club and saw him as he was sitting on an armchair, apparently minding his own business, oblivious to his surroundings. Was it his evident indifference to whatever was happening at the club that caught her attention? His looks were against everything she had observed in such places. You know what I mean: hyper-muscled guys with extra broad shoulders, short arms, and a diminutive head whose whole capacity is exhausted by generating the most standard pickup line: “hi, nice avi.”
She also observed he was wearing shoes, and that made her decide to check out his profile, where she had the pleasant surprise of not finding any sex-related groups. Rather, she noted he belonged to a collection of groups from role-playing sims. His picks also referred to places with names reminiscent of ancient worlds and cultures known only in a few selected academic circles. He looked too high-browed for the sordid speak-easy that place was. Was he looking for an adventure on the
dark side? Oh, certainly he was looking for a fast fling on the down low, she supposed, noticing that his profile listed one Missy Buttons as his partner.
“Nobody’s perfect,” she sighed.
The ding-a-ling of an incoming IM startled her as she was resigning the idea of chatting him up and seeing what could happen. Did he notice she was checking his profile? Was that even possible? Only God (and maybe the Lindens) know what is possible in this crazy digital realm, but just to be on the safe side, she closed the window with his profile and opened the IM. She was in for a pleasant surprise.
The conversation among them flew so smoothly, she couldn’t remember any other occasion when she felt so at ease, relaxed, and safe talking with a total stranger about all and everything. From the usual platitudes about lag in Second Life and weather in Real Life to details every time more intimate about themselves, their exchange came to a halt only when both realized the party had ended long ago and that they were the only people still at the club. Friendship was offered and accepted as a matter of fact, with the promise to resume contact the next day.
For their “first date” –he made every effort to establish that it was a date–, he invited her to a fancy ballroom, where she appeared all dressed up and had the chance to verify that he owned more than one pair of shoes. “That’s a good sign, I guess,” she thought. The venue for the second date was a pretty park, where he managed to rez a blanket and all kinds of food and beverages to have a picnic. After that, they went on a romantic

boat ride along a peaceful river, surrounded by a beautiful landscape. Covered with a blanket, they continued sharing intimate thoughts and feelings, pleasantly discovering how many things they had in common, likes and dislikes, music genres, and especially intellectual interests. Thus, they
weren’t too surprised when they discovered both lived in the same time zone.
For their third date, he invited her to his place. Not a fifty-linden rental, mind you, but a huge house whose décor showed its owner was both smart and refined. That sealed the deal for her, and the date
DATING AS ONE OF THE FINE ARTS
practically consisted of them trying every item on the menu of a bed he had acquired specifically for the occasion. There was chemistry. There was understanding. There was passion. Each one seemed to know in advance what the other wanted or needed to make the experience even more pleasurable. There was a moment before the climax when they felt no words were necessary anymore. Their gazes locked in an unending embrace of ecstasy, bliss, and something that could be described only in mystical terms. But they were both atheists and wouldn’t bother describing what they had just lived invoking supernatural forces. They rather thought of an amazing combination of factors that enabled them to meet each other. “It was kismet,” she would say later to a friend, talking about her relationship.
Shortly after that, she moved in with him, and from that moment on they were inseparable. They were together from the moment they logged in until the moment they went back to Real Life. Together they went dancing, exploring, sailing –he was a consummate sailor–, racing cars… or they simply cuddled for hours and talked.
Allow me at this point a brief digression about immersionism. Both our friends were diehard immersionists and, thus, they avoided the mere mention of anything related to their real lives. But even the most hardcore immersionists may feel the need to share some specifics about what they are and do on the other side of the screen if only to explain some decisions they make in Second Life.
That’s why they were well into the third month of their relationship when, one evening while they were talking about their jobs, she accidentally mentioned the name of the company she worked for.
That lapsus triggered a chain of revelations that led to a surprising discovery (surprising only for them, of course; I’m sure the reader already knows what’s coming next): they both lived not only in the same time zone but in the same country too and, miracle of miracles, wonder of wonders, also in the same city!
That finding sent every bit of their immersionist dogma right down the toilet. If they were such a perfect couple in Second Life, the temptation to fix a date in the real world was too big to resist. And they didn’t resist it. They even decided to have a date in two weeks’ time, on February 14th, St. Valentine’s, no less.
They settled for a quaint coffee shop not too far from where she lived. That evening, she put extra care into her outfit, makeup, and hair. She knew she wasn’t as good-looking or as young as her SL avatar, but she wasn’t an old hag either. Besides, “he can’t look as good as he does in SL,” she thought to calm her anxiety.
Of course, he didn’t, as she could confirm when she arrived at the coffee shop. She recognized him immediately, even if he was a few years older than the picture he had shown her and went to sit at the table with him.
The conversation had a bumpy start. A few comments about how they looked, some comparisons with their digital alter egos in which they always seemed to have the upper hand, and a few remarks about the terrible weather they were having that day. “Oh, my god! Are we talking now about the weather?” she realized. The witty, smart, and literate partner she had found in SL was nowhere to be seen and, to make things worse, she also felt at a loss for words, with no conversation topic, as if she had nothing to say to this stranger. Suddenly she realized how dull, vapid, and uninteresting he was.
He must have felt something similar since he didn’t bother to set a new date when it was clear that the first one had been a huge mistake. He didn’t even ask her for her phone number before parting ways. The next time he logged in to Second Life, he discovered she had picked up the few things she had rezzed at his home. We couldn’t say he was disappointed. Like many men like him, he had never been a fan of dating on St. Valentine’s. “I should have known better,” he thought, noticing she had also disappeared from his contact list.

Love Letters
Some of us have a love/hate relationship with writing a love letter. Sometimes it is difficult to put into words what you want to express. At the end of the day, a love letter written on real paper with ink can become a cherished keepsake, especially in this modern age of emails and texts.

Love Letters
have a long history. They are magic… not only the kind that we might write to our beloved but, also those that we write to our best friend and even in those midnight hours to our own self. Some of us think that writing a love letter is a lost art…
I don’t think it has to be … and it shouldn’t be.

Love Letters
are as meaningful for the writer as they are for the reader. Whether writing a love letter in the form of a real life card if you remember what that is... you put a stamp on it or if expressing yourself in a SL note card, a love letter shouldn’t be a lost art. They are part of the way we express ourselves and our passion honestly.
REKINDLING THE MAGIC
Bosl edition 74
Since it is close to Valentine’s Day, I wondered does the message of love and affection ever change? ‘No’ is the short answer. Perhaps the way we communicate has changed, but not the way we feel and sense each other. We often respond to one another with emotive and pithy responses and the unstructured flow of answers and responses that are lightening fast --- especially in SL, where bonds are sometimes so ephemeral… yet, we have all made friends we cherish and will never meet.
If you are like me, then sometimes you feel we are awash with impersonal communication. It often leaves me feeling confused and lonely. And, that is ok. This Valentine’s Day BOSL could give you a million quotes from a million peeps but we won’t that is not the point; we are here to inspire you.
We want you to dig into your heart and soul and send a love letter. We want you to surprise yourself and someone you love, because life is full of joy and moments, loving and... Ok, sometimes it is precarious; the point is you take the chance, and you express your love and gratitude.
Call me old fashioned, but I like love letters. Let’s make sure they don’t become a lost art: send one to your mom, dad, sister, cousin, best friend, lover, partner… you get the idea.

NEGLY CLAREMONT SPIRIT OF BOSL
SPIRIT OF BOSL
After months of preparation, tabulation, and anticipation, the decision was finally announced. The Spirit of BOSL had a winner. But on December 10, 2022, the woman selected was more than the first place recipient. She was the first ever chosen in the premiere event. And the winner is… (drum roll) …Ms. Negly Claremont!
A project of The Best of Second Life organization, The Spirit of BOSL is a celebration of virtual residents and what makes us unique in good ways. Perhaps none are more deserving of the inaugural title than the abovementioned,- Negly. Her winning spirit shines through her life.
“I was shocked when they announced I won,” laughs Negly, discussing the finale while interviewed with her husband of both worlds, Jacob Claremont. From their virtual home on a hilltop, she recalls, “I was crying and overwhelmed and thankful that all the effort I put in yielded fruits. In other words – I was super happy!”
Her spouse agrees. “I did not attend the event in order to prevent lag,” Jacob recalls. “But I was watching her expressions (in real life) and did not know what her reaction would be. I had to wait for her to tell me she won.”
Mr. and Mrs. Claremont’s story is as unique as the contest. Negly was born and raised in Venezuela. She describes
her home country as “full of beauty and warm people.” But situations in Venezuela were rapidly deteriorating, which is why she came to Second Life.
“I wanted to escape reality by creating a virtual life,” she recalls. And so she did.

“When I saw the wonderful things one could do in SL’s fashion world, I decided to pursue it. I fell in love with it.” Fashion was not all she fell in love with.
In 2013 Negly met Jacob in the virtual world. In the real world, she was in Venezuela, and he was in New England. Behold the power of Second Life.
“We met at a Second Life Christian group – House of Prayer,” Jacob noted. “I had given up [on dating] because mine was a tragic story of ex-girlfriends and bad choices.” And then, Negly walked into his life – literally.
Jacob remembers, “She walked up and asked if she could sit by me and talk.” The rest is history.
The couple became boyfriend and girlfriend. “We prayed that one day we could meet each other,” adds Negly.
In 2016, Jacob received a toy airplane for Christmas. Curiously, he looked at his parents, who smiled and explained, “We got her a ticket.” In March 2017, Negly flew to America, and the couple met for the first time.
One month later, he proposed, and she said yes. Four months after they met in RL, the two married.
Her family was unable to attend the wedding. However, the happy event was live-streamed by the church they were married in. Negly’s parents and siblings watched the wedding and reception via laptop computer in Venezuela.
“At the end of the night, I was dancing with my laptop,” Negly remembers. “My parents on the other side of the world were waving their hands with happiness.”
The couple has been married for five years.
In addition to being the embodiment of the spirit of BOSL, the contest of the same name promotes and encourages contestants without modeling backgrounds to “jump into the world of fashion and brand representation.”
In her early days in SL, Negly embraced the fashion world. She enrolled and graduated from the cyberworld’s Fashion Model University. However, she was unable to pursue a fashion career due to Venezuela’s undependable internet service and occasional electrical blackouts.
But winning The Spirit of BOSL rekindled her passion for the world of fashion. The contest’s preliminaries were good training. “We had different challenges every month,” she notes about the seven months of qualifications and eliminations. “There were three model runway challenges and three photo challenges.”
She adds, “the contest was a long commitment, but it created a routine for me to get my styling in order and to focus on the next challenge. Looking back, I grew up so much as a person and as a model in this contest. I loved how, with the help of so many people, I was able to come to meet every style.”
Speaking about her husband’s involvement, “Jacob was my strong support. He supervised my styling and edited my grammar.” She laughs.
NEGLY CLAREMONT SPIRIT OF BOSL
When asked for advice to others considering entering the next Spirit of BOSL, Negly replies, “Don’t quit. Stay with it. There are many steps in the contest’s process, and some are difficult. Take your time. Breathe, heal, and start again. If I can do it, you can, too!”
As for the future: “I plan to polish my modeling knowledge and fashion.” As the winner of Spirit of BOSL, Negly has a full scholarship to the new BLVD Pro Academy, which she plans to attend. She will pursue SL’s professional training in modeling and hopes to participate in fashion shows.
“I would also like to help my friends improve their
modeling skills; perhaps we can one day walk on a runway together!”
And the partnered couple of SL and married couple of RL will continue to thrive in both worlds. “It’s amazing,” Jacob adds, “to meet someone in what some would call a video game and then, years later, marry her.”
The dream was and is real for the Claremonts: she, the first recipient of Ms. Spirit of BOSL, and he, her husband and supporter. Negly and husband Jacob exemplify the spirit of the contest and the best of Second Life.
