FROG RETREAT Arya Braveheart

t is February in Second Life, and that means love and romance will be in the air. It also means that there will be a lot of pink and red to be seen, so I decided that we would break with tradition and make February very green and leafy. What could be more romantic than a retreat in the forest where you and your loved one can relax in a secluded cabin surrounded by nature at its finest? I wanted to create a beautiful place where you can wake up in the morning, grab a coffee, and sit outside on your own private deck area to watch the sun come up before slipping into a hot tub or natural spring and breathing in the serenity. This is not a place where you will fill your day with activities like horse riding, tennis, or hiking. It is a place to find peace whether that be in the sauna, with a massage, or grabbing a glass of wine and sitting in the central area to take in the view and listen to the wind through the leaves, the birds in the trees, and the frogs croaking from the pools and ponds. I was going to create a dining and cooking area, and then I realised that if this was my dream retreat, then I would not be cooking. I would expect all my meals to be chosen from a menu and brought in so I can eat in the midst of nature. Imagine enjoying your favourite dishes in this environment— and you don’t even need to lift a finger unless holding a knife, fork, or spoon! Just perfect. This scene is very much like New Zealand, and I am feeling at home here with the ferns, trees, and natural bush all around me. The trees might be slightly different, but I went with what I would find in a rainforest area here, minus all of our beautiful native trees and plants. You also won’t find any of our birdlife here, as SL hasn’t quite got as far as creating kea, kiwi, and weka, so I went with frogs around the place as a theme and created more of an Aotearoa New Zealand vibe rather than it being a replica.

I have also gone way overboard on the details that you won’t even see in the photos, but I am hoping to open this up to my friends to enjoy for a bit; they will see the candles in the bathrooms, the towels by the shower and pools, and the toiletries on the sinks in the cabins. They will also see that each cabin has its own unique decor items, but it is hard to show all that in the space of a few photos! However, when you are decorating your space, the details matter and make all the difference in creating a beautiful space for you and your loved ones to enjoy. So, get out the soaps, place the drinking glasses, and hang the towels. It is fun, and you know you collected them for a reason! There were a couple of items that I altered to create the scene. The first was the blackboard in the cabins. The Steamin’ Mugs Coffee Bar from Your Dreams had a lovely board that was meant for a kitchen, so I changed the board to the coffee one you see in the picture. Canva was my friend! I also used Sway’s [Peony] Garden Sheds as fancy outhouses and broke down the KAZZA By the Sea Quarto Casal Wash Basin to create an outdoor wash area as I couldn’t find any that were suitable. Use what you have and modify if needed. Lastly, I just want to say a huge thank you to my friend, Gonzo, for creating the cliffs in the background. I might be okay at decorating, but I am terrible at that sort of thing. I am just thankful that I have friends who can work to their strengths!

AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER Coco St. George

he grabbed the katana from the exhibit stall and thought that something like that was exactly what she needed. Vengeance was all she had in mind after her deadbeat boyfriend dumped her. “My so-called boyfriend,” she corrected herself mentally. “I’m not sure he was ever really committed to our relationship.” She looked at the katana again and smiled sadly. Deep down, she knew she would never use it against him. “Besides, how would I find him in the first place?” She put the sharp sword back in its stall and grinned, chuckling silently. “I’ve seen ‘Kill Bill’ one time too many times.”

She stopped her thoughts right there, unwilling to relive the moments they had lived together—“magic moments,” as he told her once. “Moments that will last forever.” Sure, a ‘forever’ spanning only three months, which in terms of Second Life might be more than OK, but of course, she expected more. One reason for her deep funk was that she knew why she was so crabby: Saint Valentine’s Day loomed on the calendar, and she had nobody to go out with that day. Nobody. How was she supposed to explain it to her family and friends? And she found the idea of spending the most romantic night of the year alone in her room, eating cold pizza and watching TV, absolutely depressing, if not disgusting. Against every ounce of common sense she possessed, she went to her bedroom and from under the bed took out a box that was carefully tied with a red ribbon. That was her “memory box,” full of photos and notes documenting their life together. “I know, I know I’m going to hate myself in the morning for doing this,” she said out loud. “But I can’t help it.”

Back in her home, she didn’t want to sit on her usual couch: It was full of memories from when she shared her home with him. How many times had they…?

She headed to the kitchen and took the ice cream jar from the fridge. Spoon in hand, she began to attack the bowl while glancing through the contents of the box. They had met at a museum, and there was a photo to prove it. “Who took this picture?” she wondered. Of course! Her bestie Mona had gone that day with her to the art museum.

”A museum?,” asked Mona when she suggested the visit. “What do you plan to do there?” ”What everybody is supposed to do in such places.” ”Enjoy the artwork?” ”No, silly, waiting for someone who, like me, also likes museums and chat him up, of course.” And chat him up she did! The museum offered a wide selection of all kinds of paintings, and he was admiring a baroque masterpiece by Gabbiano when their gazes met. And that was all it took. After a vivid conversation about Baroque painters vs. Renaissancers, friendship was offered as a matter of course, and promises were made to meet again soon. Very soon, actually, since the next day he called her and suggested a movie. And if you are wondering where in this digital world they managed to find a movie theater other than porn offerings, maybe it’s because you haven’t yet been to Second Life Cinema, featuring actual movies produced in Second Life, a branch of the Seventh Art called machinima. This word, by the way, is a portmanteau of “machine” and “cinema,” and maybe that’s all you need to know before we digress grossly and miss the point of our story.

The movie they watched was A Christmas Carol, directed by Caligula Aquila, whose story provided them with a juicy topic to discuss in the quaint café where they had dinner after the movie. Although it

was mid-Autumn, the Mediterranean character of the sim provided warm weather and that made very enjoyable the simple fact of being outdoors, having a nice conversation about the mysteries of human nature, and, most of all, enjoying each other’s company. Later that night, at her home, they had decided not to wait for the third date and headed directly to the bedroom. But at that point in her memory lane, the ice cream bowl was empty, and she began to feel guilty, a little bloated, and frankly ashamed. A guilty feeling was all that was left of one of the best relationships she’d ever had. “No way!” she protested. After all, he had dumped her; the decision to break up had been his decision after “careful consideration,” as he had explained in the note he left for her. She thought he had acted like a coward because he didn’t dare to break up with her in person. No, he just left a note and disappeared. That terrible note, by the way, was lying right there, along with the photographs. She took it not without hesitation. She hadn’t read it again after that fateful night when she had found it on her night table. “I love you too much to keep this relationship going,” was the opening line. The note continued with general ramblings about how happy he had been at her side, some detailed although incomprehensible instructions about what to do with the stuff he had rezzed in her home (which she disregarded, of course, sending him an unrezzable lump of prims that would forever haunt his inventory), expressions of his best wishes for her eternal happiness away from him, and a heartfelt supplication for her forgiveness. Has she forgiven him already? She had never thought in such terms. Yes, she felt wounded the first few days, but why would she let a bad experience spoil all the great things she had lived in SL? Of course, she wouldn’t! She put all the photos and notes back in the box and shoved it back under the bed. “I’ll never open it again,” she promised to herself.

A week later, she met her friend Mona at their usual hangout. “I can’t wait to tell you all about the fabulous date I had on St. Valentine’s!” she told her friend. The inquisitive look Mona had on her face was very clear, so she didn’t wait for her question. ”Well, all I needed was someone to go out with that day, right? So I created a nice alt, just like I like ‘em. After all, who better than myself to spend that special night with? And sure enough, this time I will definitely wait until the third date to let him into my bedroom. I don’t want him to have the wrong idea about me.”

BAND OF BROTHERS SECOND LIFE'S ECHO VETS Sarah Brenham

t is no secret that human beings are social creatures. Due to various reasons, it can be difficult for people to get a decent amount of socialization in. This is where programs such as Second Life can help individuals connect with others. Whatever interests and/or situations you have gone through, you can find persons in SL who will share one or more commonalities with you. Being able to bond with those who have gone through a similar circumstance as you can help you if you are on a healing journey. This idea can be especially beneficial for those who have served or currently are in the military. If you are active duty or a veteran and are looking for a place to be around like-minded individuals in Second Life, then please follow me. Echo Group Band of Brothers is a sim that opened in September 2022 to cater to those who are or have been in the military and are looking for a community to join in SL. The concept for this place was suggested to Stacy Lee (stacy.maracas) by Madori Linden. You see, Ms. Madori’s brother is a vet and knew that Ms. Lee, who is also a vet, serves as co-president for Band of Brothers, an organization in Real Life that helps veterans through a variety of activities and services. She was the perfect person to spearhead a project like this. Ms. Lee presented Ms.Madori’s idea to the Band of Brothers’s executive board, and they loved it so much that they took it a step further and started a chapter right here in Second Life! If you have come along for one of my tours before, then you already know I don’t plan to show you everything this sim has to offer. I want you to explore on your own! However, I will be discussing a few highlights that are beneficial to service members. As mentioned, this sim is dedicated to active duty military and veterans, so they offer a wealth of programs— including lessons for those new to SL. They also offer support groups and special assemblies for those suffering from PTSD, or PostTraumatic Stress Disorder. Members can also attend suicide prevention courses. BAND OF BROTHERS

Let me take a moment to discuss this. Suicide and self-harm can be dark topics, but it’s important that we address theses issues and offer help to those that need it. And service members are often likely to be affected. If you are ever approached by someone in SL who is in a dark place and in danger of harming themselves in RL, there are some things you can do to help. If you know them IRL, you can contact their local social services for a wellness check. If you know their social media handles, reach out to their family; for Facebook, you can report your concerns and Meta will send them a message with resources for help. You can also let Linden Labs know. Now that you know the ways Echo Band of Brothers can help service members, why not take a peek at some of the fun things you can do here, too? Lanny Elderberry-Boucher & Jaun Boucher-Elderberr Our Love Story We met in March 2023 through one of our mutual groups, SL Environmental Corps. I needed training on one of the boats, and Lanny instructed me. Lanny always knew there was something special about me but remained respectful because I was in a partnership, so I did not really see Lanny in a romantic way, but we did form a good friendship. As months went by, and due to unfortunate RL situations, I became single. For a few months I was seeing someone here and there, but mine and Lanny’s paths crossed a few times with the groups we are involved with. On 15th December, at SL Coast Guard’s annual Christmas party, it happened that Lanny’s dance partner left, and also mine— I asked her to dance. And well, from the first moment we started dancing, everything just clicked. Lanny knew what she wanted for her Second Life, I knew what I wanted, and we found our paths were going in the same direction. Although this is still a fairly new relationship, together we are busy dreaming and planning a future in this world, growing closer each day. With everything we do together in SL Environmental Corps and SL Coast Guard, and our personal life, our love for each other just becomes stronger.

Our Shared Achievements SL Environmental Corps Together in SLEC, they have already completed 4 missions together since starting their relationship. They are also planning to promote the group together to the rest of Second Life, by sharing what they are doing. SL Coast Guard Together in SLCG, they take part in Diving courses. Lanny is a Master Diver and is busy training Jaun to achieve his Master Dive. She trained him to achieve his 1st Class dive course. Also, they do patrols together on Blake sea and take part in Search and Rescue drills. Their ranks in Coast Guard are very demanding, Lanny is Senior Chief Petty Officer and also Commanding Officer of her station, station Danshire. Jaun is Master Chief Petty Officer and also Director of Public Affairs office. And together they are growing to get promoted in the group. RFL - Relay for life For 2024, they are planning to work together on Relay for Life. Jaun is Team Captain for SLCG/ SLEC RFL group, and Lanny will be one of the Team Leaders. Together, they want to do Cancer Awareness for the two groups with RFL 2024. Planning events together, and Lanny helps with designs of clothing and equipment that is needed for the groups. Business Starting a Charter Business, JKL Charters— although it’s still in the development phase, it will be a Charter business where both of them will do what they love, Flying & Sailing together. Leona and Luchenpur Darwin The first time I had a conversation with Leona, I knew she was the one. I knew, but I hesitated, and she moved on. I was lucky, though, and when we spoke again I made sure she came back into my life. This time I didn’t hesitate. Our friendship grew deeper and deeper to the point where I asked her to become my Lady, and we became exclusive. We have been together for nearly two years. Leona is a very warm and kind person. She also has a mind for business and great responsibility. Being able to talk with her on so many different levels is fantastic. With her encouragement and leadership, we were able to remodel and update Club Center Ground and The Sugarhill Lounge.

Ian Moonkill & Robin Moonkill (Cover Couple)

The meaning of empowerment has been skewed in recent years. Not many people even understand what that means. Personally for myself, it means having a person or group of people that encourage you to make decisions or to learn something new. Being empowered gives you confidence, and increases your self esteem to go forward with whatever you wish to do. For me the word empowerment means loving someone unconditionally, encouraging and rooting for them knowing very deep down they will succeed. Very few people can say they have someone by their side that can offer that to them . I am so very blessed to have Ian stand by me behind me and offer his undying support on this journey . Together we have undying faith in eachother, we genuinely know that we know what we know! He understands I will always do my best for whatever pursuit or endeavor or task I take on. And I will always do the same for him. We have had failures and no doubt may again , but it's the way there that matters and the hand that holds yours that makes you strong. My dreams are his and vice versa, we share visions, we implement them and smile at each other. When I feel like giving up he simply whispers, lets just sleep on it darling. He is always right, I change my mind and we are back to it. I'm his biggest fan and he is mine. That is empowerment.

Sheba Blitz : Is a RL and SL artist. She exclusively hand paints Mandalas which are ancient and mystical symbols of the universe, that represent the way of the "peaceful path". She also creates virtual world art works as well, be it dream catchers, sculpture, mixed media artworks or photography, and has found it rewarding and exciting working in these mediums. Sheba was born and lives in Australia and loves being an artist in both worlds. Sheba writes: “The mandala is an ancient and sacred symbol of the universe, classically in the form of a circle (the Cosmos) enclosing a square (earthbound matter). Mandalas contain what is called a quaternity, or multiple of four. The squaring of the circle is a common archetypal image of wholeness and order. Mandalas are aids to meditation, contemplation, healing and visual Pleasure. All of the mandalas on display are hand painted by Sheba Blitz in RL. DENDEN POSES Compe Lockwood

irst impressions mean everything in the first life, and even more in the second one. A striking pose, provocative stance, or an eyeturning position is an avatar’s signature. DenDen Poses makes it happen. Each is created by the store’s owner and namesake, DenDen. From the heart of Kiwi Island, a two-floor SL store bears her name chiseled in stone, “DenDen Poses, Custom poses and props for your second life photography.” Walls of poses await your inspection. Try one on for size.

from the ‘standard issue tin soldier stance’ of the SL newbie. But for many in the virtual world, DenDen’s poses are vital. Avatars in the public eye depend on a good stance. Her customers include models, photographers, bloggers, hosts, hostesses, site owners, and more. The demand is great and so is the competition. “This is a very competitive business,” DenDen says, as we tour her store. “Lots of people do this,” she adds about the pose creation industry. “But I like to think that I am pretty good at it.” Indeed, she is. She takes a photo, works her magic, and creates a Second Life pose. Other poses are created as needed or requested. Want a realistic stance of you riding a motorcycle? No problem. Desire a sensuous position sitting in a chair? She’s got this. Need a cool shot of someone eating an ice cream cone— chocolate or vanilla? Of course, potential buyers can bypass the custom work and purchase DenDen’s previously created poses, displayed in her store galleries. “The ones on display (and there are hundreds) can be purchased on-site,” she says. One click, pay for it, wear it, own it— it’s yours. “Potential customers usually come to me with an idea, or better, a photograph, and ask if I can create it,” DenDen explains. “I look at the image and think what it would look like in 3D. Then I create it.”

There are poses for sports— tennis, golf, swimming, running, biking, and more. There are poses replicating personalities, stances that make you stand out in a crowd, and postures defining your disposition. For some, a custom-created pose will grace their profile picture, which immediately sets one apart DENDEN

She often works with models. “When needing a model to complete my ideas, I have a group of friends who are always excited about being in one of my photos.” In addition to models, much of her work is for bloggers. “Most of the time bloggers need group poses,” she notes. Bloggers use the poses for things

like photos for advertisements and/or to illustrate blog posts. As for the rest of it, her custom poses are excellent for user profiles of distinction, unique from most others’. DenDen’s work adds a mark of distinction to personal SL Christmas cards, profile descriptions, and even social media profiles.

Her store opened September 2014. Nine years-plus is a long time for an SL business. Endurance takes effort. “I work a full-time job, and it is very intense,” DenDen says about that other world. “I typically spend a couple hours a day in my Second Life business. I go to work early in the morning. By the end of the workday, I don’t want to be in front of a computer.” She laughs. In addition to her SL store, DenDen’s work is also on sale/display at her Second Life Market Place Store and Flicker. Future projects include making props and creating animations. But for today, DenDen continues her specialty: poses that make you look good, feel good, and do good— in your personal or professional SL world. Her work merits a standing ovation, and there’s probably a pose for that.

Her creative skills are self-taught in Second Life but with talent from first life. “I am an artist in RL, so twisting anatomy is not a hard thing for me.” She also replicates famous people in famous poses. She illustrated that point by showing us a picture of Marilyn Monroe. But wait, that’s not Marilyn, it’s DenDen! “This is the photo of Marilyn,” she explains in her ‘before and after’ example. “And this is a recreation of that photo.” The picture is totally wow. In addition to personal pose creations, her resume includes magazine covers, model portfolios, and other venues where how you stand fits the plan. “A simple model pose can be created in about 10 minutes,” she comments. “But I have taken as long as an hour to create a single complex pose.” Customer demands vary throughout the year. “Sales
