ALPHA OMEGA MU SORORITY

SISTERHOOD, SERVICE AND SUCCESS IN SECOND LIFE

In the vibrant world of Second Life (SL), where virtual communities thrive, one sorority stands out for its unwavering commitment to empowering women and making a positive impact. Alpha Omega Mu (AOM) Sorority, founded on December 14, 2007, has been a beacon of sisterhood, service, and success for over 17 years.

The story of AOM began with five visionary women: Esence Dulce, Lala Nova, Sunnibunni Lewis (now Easton), Illisa Davison, and Shinesse Madison. Driven by their shared values and experiences with Divine Nine sororities in real life, they set out to create an organization that would embody the essence of true sisterhood while respecting the legacy of existing Greek organizations.

“We wanted to create a sorority that was more than just letters,” explains Esence Dulce. “We aimed to align our principles closely with those of the Divine Nine, incorporating our own original ideas, symbols, mission, and processes.”

From the very beginning, AOM has stood for the values of sisterhood, academic excellence, community service, and personal development. The sorority’s motto, “Sisterhood Above All Else,” reflects their unwavering commitment to supporting and uplifting one another.

What sets AOM apart from other Greek organizations in SL is their strong focus on creating an authentic experience that mirrors real-life sororities. “We feel it is important that we create an experience that respects and pays homage to the real-life culture to the best of our ability within the constraints of Second Life,” says Sunni B Easton.

One of the cornerstones of AOM’s mission is their dedication to philanthropy and community service. The sorority has been a long-time supporter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, an organization close to their hearts as founder Esence Dulce was diagnosed with MS just one year before AOM’s establishment. Through various fundraising events and campaigns, AOM has raised substantial amounts of money for MS research and support services.

Leadership opportunities abound within AOM, with members taking on roles such as President, Vice President, Project Manager, Dean of Pledges, and event coordinators. The sorority encourages personal growth and leadership development through active participation and engagement.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the forefront of AOM’s values. They actively recruit members from diverse backgrounds and foster a welcoming environment for all. “We prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion by actively recruiting members from diverse backgrounds and fostering a welcoming environment for everyone,” emphasizes Lala Nova.

For those considering joining AOM, the founders offer valuable advice. “Embrace the experience fully,” encourages Lala Nova. “Take advantage of the opportunities for personal and professional growth, get involved in our community service projects, and build lasting relationships with your sisters.”

The process of joining AOM involves attending recruitment events, submitting an application, going through an interview, and participating in a pledge process. While the specifics of the pledge process remain private, the sorority emphasizes that it is designed to foster personal growth, bonding, and a deep understanding of AOM’s values.

Throughout its 17-year history, Alpha Omega Mu Sorority has made a significant impact on the lives of its members and the wider SL community. With its strong commitment to sisterhood, service, and success, AOM continues to empower women and create a legacy of excellence in the virtual world.

PRIDE AT HOME

The human spirit never ceases to amaze me. I am always pleasantly surprised when learning how people adapt to achieve their goals and/ or dreams when faced with hurdles. 2020 was a year where everyone had to overcome obstacles. The Covid-19 pandemic pressed the pause button on most social gatherings. During this period, applications like Second Life provided a place where individuals could mingle with others safely. It is probably apparent that many popular events in Real Life were canceled, like the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, during this scary era. It is my belief that the most amount of affairs that were not allowed to happen, were the ones that were scheduled to commence during the month of June. Why? Because June is when Pride is observed. What is Pride, you ask? Pride is when those in the LGBTIA+ community celebrate their identity. For those who don’t know what the acronym LGBTQIA+ stands for, it is an evolving acronym that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, intersex, and asexual, with the plus sign acting as an umbrella to cover everyone else. When soirées for Pride in Real Life had to be axed, people started having them in SL. Although individuals are allowed once more to have events in RL, certain ones for Pride that started in Second Life during the pandemic continue to take place each year. One such one is Pride At Home. Come with me now to explore this fun and important venue.

Pride At Home is a large area, so we will tour it in sections. To start, when you land in the sim, you will see the LGBTIA+ charities this space supports. If you or someone you know is struggling in relation to their sexual orientation and/or gender, then I urge for contact to be made with one of these

organizations. (Additional resources can be found within the exhibit).

Before we move into the hustle and bustle of celebration, I think it is important to first take a moment and visit the Remembrance Area, dedicated to those in the community who are no longer among us. On one hand, I wish spaces like these didn’t exist, but on the other, I am glad that they do.

If you need a pick-me-up before going to the next section, a small café is nestled nearby in a pretty garden.

Now, let’s move on to something happier: the festival. This is the spot where you can experience live music. A schedule for all of the acts that will be performing is located next to the stage. If you need refreshments while dancing to your favorite songs, food and drink trucks are at your disposal. A few steps outside of the festival area is the shop&hop section. This space is where you can collect QUALITY freebies.

Now that we have gathered all of the gifts that this sim has to offer, let’s go attend a parade. This parade unique as it doesn’t move, but the beautiful floats make this a worthwhile stop. If you are looking to observe some more beauty, then the expo is a great place to visit. I admit, I was taken aback when discovering what the theme of the expo was. But upon reflection, it totally makes sense. The name of the expo is LGBTQIA+ FACES OF THE SL COMMUNITY. Basically, it’s a collage of pictures of Second Life residents who are members of the LGBTIA+ populace. I find this piece incredibly bold and brave.

if you are looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle for a little bit.

To quote Katy Perry, “After a hurricane comes a rainbow.” This sentiment could not be more true for Pride At Home. The owners of this sim were able to create something amazing during a time of great uncertainty. I do encourage everyone to come and explore this place, regardless of how they identify sexually or gender-wise. Even if you are unable to visit during the month of June, I have learned that this spot will now remain open all year long— so, no excuses!

Pride At Home /60/180/24

To conclude our tour of this sim, we will now go to the exhibit. This space is not really what I would consider a typical exhibit. It is a great spot, though, to get more assistance for those in need in the LGBTQIA+ community. Also, it’s a great option

SANTORINI

You might not know Santorini, but you should. With snow-white houses and black rock beaches overlooking an aqua sea, the Greek island is one of the most alluring sites on earth. So is the Second Live version, Santorini at Breezy.

A New York real-life flight to Santorini is about 15 hours. A Second Life teleport is about 3 seconds. Let’s go with the latter.

But first, a crash course on what to expect at this seaside destination of delight in both worlds.

Quick history: Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was practically destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, molding its rugged landscape for eternity. Bleached-white houses, buildings, and walls defy gravity, attached to cliffs above an underwater caldera (crater). The nearmystical fortress overlooks the sea with beaches of black, red, and white lava pebbles.

Second Life’s version of this potentially volcanic endeavor looks very much like the real one. The site was created by Pandora, who did a remarkable job duplicating the Greek Isle, considering she’s never been there. “This was all made from pictures,” the site owner says, as we tour and explore the cyber version.

She adds, “I was trying to think of something different to create while looking through vacation photos.” And so she did. “Building this site was more challenging than I thought it would be,” she notes. “I almost tore it up several times before completing and opening it.”

Fortunately, Pandora neither gave up nor shredded her plans.

And on that happy note, we tour a Grecian treasure through the magic of teleportation.

One first lands at the Welcome Center, which includes a listing of places to visit. At this writing, there are three beaches including two pools,; a fishing village, vineyards, Club Santorini, Streets of Santorini, Café Santorini, and others.

One travels through traditional ways and means – on foot, by boat, or by jet ski. “We also have a hidden game room and an underwater excursion, dance club, and exploration in many forms,” Pandora adds.

But perhaps the best approach for first-timers is to explore this oceanic haven by air, sea, and land, in that order. Let us begin.

about long winding hilly paths, some over steep hills. To access the RL villages’ pedestrian paths, one must be in good shape. Not so in the Second Life version. You and a fingertip- accessible computer mouse walk all over the place. One’s feet never move.

Along the journey are discoveries at every turn, including rooftop reclining chairs, meeting places, vineyards, a dance club, and a lovely hill-top wedding venue. All depict a rea-life Grecian wonderland.

The attention to detail is impressive. “I thought it would be challenging,” recalls Pandora, about creating the site. “But it was more challenging than I knew. I have not seen many other types of build as this one in Second Life. Everything here is based on the real Santorini. I even created the terrain based on that of the island.”

By air: An aerial view offers stunning photography and panoramic views from angles unavailable in real life. Second Life’s version includes commuting by bubble. Yes, you heard me: bubble.

You sit in one and fly everywhere, looking at stunning vistas below. Try that in real life. You can’t. Apparently, Greeks have not mastered flight by liquid orbs.

By sea: Rezz a boat, such as the Sea Ya. Said vessel is well-named. It enables one to ‘see ya’ all over this island. Insider tip: stop the boat and jump out. There’s a mermaid down below. Also coral reefs, fish, manta rays, sunken ships, games, and more await in a whole new underwater world.

By foot: Real life Santorini YouTube videos warn

She received advice from expert visitors. “I had a lot of Greek visitors, which was fun,” said Pandora, who lives in the U.S. “To me, for Greeks to visit my site was a compliment, and I loved their feedback.”

The build took six months, partly because of the architectural accuracy. “I have good SL mentors,”1Pandora says. “They always stress to get the details right.”

The attention to detail paid off in one of the prettiest depictions of a real-life destination. SL’s Santorini is all Greek to me and should be for you.

Santorini is known for wine making and boasts vast vineyards and fine wine varieties. Its boutique wineries are a must as they offer the ultimate ambrosial experience.

“The most beautiful one”

Rekyheriheru Corvinus, A.K.A. “Reky” was an accountant in a previous life, who grew up loving art. Her grandmother painted, her mother worked in pastels, and her great grandmother taught her to crochet at the tender age of 7.

Since then, Reky has worked in various mediums. Most notably, acrylics, watercolor, textile arts, multimedia and jewelry.

All of the artwork for this exhibit is hand-drawn in First Life, using pen & ink, or pen & ink over washes. It is then scanned and projected onto 3d canvas objects, for your viewing pleasure in Second Life.

Diagnosed in 1998 with Fibromyalgia, Reky is a devoted advocate for “invisible illnesses”. She came to Second Life in 2019, at the beginning of the pandemic, hoping to reach more people with her artwork. See her entire portfolio at https://artystrique.com/pages/portfolio.

“I've been an artist all of my life, but I only began showing my art in 2019. I've been blessed to win several awards at the local level in First Life, and rolled my artwork into some of my other design endeavors by opening Ib Visual Arts in November of 2022, rebranded as Artystrique in November of 2023.
