Last month I took a tour of cafes in Second Life, and I got some fab feedback. I thought I would start off the summer season with a tour of some of my favourite beaches so you will know exactly where to go as the weather changes, and we start hunting for sun and surf!
The great thing about heading to the beach in SL is that you are always beach-body-ready. No worrying about your pale skin or how much weight you put on over winter. You can just throw on a swimsuit and jump into the waves. Let’s go!
Moksha is an Indian Atoll that captivates with its simplicity and beauty. It offers a serene atmosphere ideal for unwinding, rejuvenating, and spending quality time with friends. The island also presents fantastic opportunities for photography, emanating a delightful ambiance that truly delights the senses. That is just all fancy talk for: find a seat, grab a drink, and settle in and enjoy the view.

Weimar IN MY HEART
Coco St. George
She got off the train with a huge smile on her lips, a small bag in her hand, and a big dream in her heart. Yes, she was well aware that she was a walking cliché: a small-town girl comes to the big city looking for fame and riches. But she also knew that dreams come true through passion and hard work. Besides, it was very well possible that among the more than four million Berliners she would find the one that would help her attain her goal.
Confident enough to leave her town in spite of the fierce opposition of her family against her plans, she felt, nevertheless, quite nervous looking around and seeing so many people, hearing so many loud noises, and listening to so many different languages. And her nervousness only increased as she heard through the speakers of the public announcement system repeated warnings against pickpockets. Instinctively, she clutched her purse and clenched her fist around her bag. The last thing she needed now was losing her scant earthly possessions to a deadbeat. But no threat could make her lose her determination.
It wasn’t hard to find a cheap neighboring hotel. What was really hard for her was to leave Alexanderplatz, a place she could describe only with the word magical. It was bustling with people, seemingly from every corner of the planet, with stores offering every imaginable kind of goods, with cafés, restaurants, and, who would believe it, even calm spots where one could sit on a bench to watch life pass by in front of them.
Once installed in the small hotel, she laid down on the bed daydreaming about the splendiferous life Destiny had in stock for her: she was going to be a big star of the silver screen! The economic downfall notwithstanding, the German film industry was having a prosperous time. The dream fabric that was UFA had just released its first talkie, a movie where
people not only talk but also sing, starring none other than Willy Fritsch himself, one of the brightest stars in the German music firmament. One of her first goals was to watch it as soon as she could get enough money for the ticket.
Later she went window-shopping, amazed at the enormous variety and diversity of goods and products from all over the world.
And the people! She couldn’t believe how many people were just inside the store. “More than what the Christmas Market draws in Kassel,” she noted. But unlike the people she used to see and greet on the street back in her hometown, in Berlin everybody looked unfriendly if not frankly hostile. At least not interested in yet another aspiring starlet loitering around.
That, of course, would never dissuade her from following her dream. She would be a big movie star, just like Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo! Everything was possible now, as her Oma used to say. “We are living in exciting new times, and things that would be unthinkable just a few years ago, now are within our reach.”
That’s right. As you may or may not know, after World War One, the Great War as it was called by its contemporaries, the Weimar Republic was established in Germany. Following the military defeat, Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated, and Germany thought the time was ripe to become a constitutional monarchy, just like the one the United Kingdom had. So, in July 1919, the German Parliament convened in Weimar (110 miles southeast of Berlin) to adopt a new constitution, and the new republic was founded one month later.
The Weimar Republic had a bumpy start. The heavy war reparations Germany had to pay crippled her

economy but, while hyperinflation plagued daily life, this era, 1919-1933 saw an upsurge of creativity in every field of the arts, music, architecture, and cinema. Major artistic movements came about in those years, including expressionism. Those were also the years when the Bauhaus was established, a school for architecture and applied arts whose influence is felt even in our days.
Also,
Berlin was a hub of cultural activity, nightlife, and artistic innovation. It was also considered the capital of “Gay Europe”, mostly because of its tolerance and openness to every way of looking for excitement and pleasure. “Ectasis and excesses” could have been its motto, and nowhere that search for thrills and enjoyment was more evident than at El Dorado, a nightclub that attracted all kinds of famous names, including the renowned Josephine Baker, the American-born performer whose celebrated banana skirt scandalized the prude souls of her time.
If you feel curious, or nostalgic, about this fascinating period in History, you’ll be happy to know that you can relive those years right here, in Second Life.
Not finding what she wanted and realizing that it was up to her to create it, Frau Jo Yardley decided to launch her
WEIMAR IN MY HEART
1920s Berlin Project to have a place devoted to the Weimar Republic. That was back in 2009 and what started as a small bar now spans a whole sim with a detailed reproduction of Berlin in the roaring twenties. Every detail is thoroughly cared for, and you won’t find anything that doesn’t belong to that time and place. Thus, a strict dress code is enforced, and visitors are requested to dress accordingly. If they don’t have the clothes, some free garments are provided at the train station, the starting point of this exciting travel back in time.
But besides the beauty of the buildings, what you might find even more valuable is the vibrant community Frau Jo Yardley has created through all these years. All the people that populate and inhabit the city are deeply embedded in the role-playing culture, and they are quick to react with wit and humor to most everyday comments, always framed in the period of time they are living in.
A note of warning should be made: while the Weimar Republic saw also a surge in political activity and struggles, for obvious reasons those topics are excluded in the sim. You may see political propaganda posted on the walls, but that’s only for decoration purposes. No discussions, no debates, no arguments.
So, now you know. Grab your suitcase and point your teleporter to The 1920’s Berlin Project. Pick the freebies if you just want to have a taste or go shopping in the stores for more sophisticated clothes if you think that’s your thing. And look around. You may come across the aspiring starlet of our story. Or even better, you may rise to stardom yourself if you find the right contacts. Don’t forget to join the group and have fun!

Junk Food Land
How sweet it is or could be. All it takes is one click, and behold a land where chocolate rules, sugar is healthy, and snacks abound. Welcome to Junk Food Land, where pixels entice and calories are zero.
Decadent treats are only the beginning. Junk Food Land is eye candy and gift shops; arcade attractions, a Ferris wheel, and Planet Pizza await. The concept and site are operated by Latte Blackewell Bixley and Radio Bixley. “I can mesh, but Radio is better and faster at it,” says Latte while conducting a tour of her candy-coated domain. “I fill in sometimes, but Radio takes care of almost all of the designing and texture work. I am more of the face of the store. I do script work and work with vendors.”
Our tour begins at the Junk Food Main Store. Aisles are chocked with candy bars, bags of chips, novelties, flip-flops, and a baked turkey wearing sunglasses. Almost everything in the store is for sale. An inhouse coffee shop and café are conveniently located for a sugar-rush break.
Stocked with candy and confections from childhood, the store has a nostalgic feel by design. “I didn’t have much money growing up,” recalls Latte. “Logging into SL was a great way to live out the few things I did enjoy as a kid, something as simple as the arcade.”
She adds, “Getting fast food on weekends was a reward; being able to provide an outlet like that to others, like I saw many years ago on SL, has been the ultimate goal here.”
Speaking of the arcade, it’s down the street, just past the site’s iconic restaurant Planet Pizza, where pizza is just the beginning. Simply put, there is nothing quite like this in SL.
First, of course, pizza is everywhere in this diner under a full-size rocket ship. Golden pepperoni pies of plenty grace every table. Smell it, savor it, click on it— your slice of the good life awaits.
The pizza parlor where crust is a must has arcade and skill games with a Chucky E. Cheese kind of vibe. Visitors accumulate tickets that can be cashed in for prizes.
A beautiful carousel indicative of days gone by, electronic bowling, video games (my favorite is Zombie Meltdown), and other amusements are all here, all under one roof. And get this: all the games are free.
To many, Junk Food Land is a Second Life within Second Life. “We also have a movie theater and restaurants,” adds Latte. “We have a lot of people coming here to roleplay, getting take-out pizza and the like. It’s pretty cute to watch.”
Outside is a towering 11-car Ferris wheel. Hop on and lift off, ‘till your pixeled heart’s content.
New people visit every week, and regular guests are reoccurring. “We talk weekly in group chat,” says Latte. “If we run into each other here, we always say hi. I pride myself on remembering ‘repeat offenders,’— I call them that. We have a good laugh over it.”
The site is also noted for its hunts. “We provide over 25 unique prizes last winter for the hunt,” recalls the owner. “It was well received.”
In the works is a collaboration between the Junk Food Store and Hi-Vid, the site’s movie store. In addition, Latte says, “I’d like to host a concert promoting both the store and their products.”

PHOTOS: CARA PAINE
Across the street from Junk Food Store is Town Square. A statue of Tom Nook, a character from Animal Crossing, stands guard. “He will take all of your money,” Latte laughs. “That’s an inside joke.”
Surrounding the statue of the dubious yet lovable character are glorious fast-food outlets. They bear striking resemblances to RL counterparts. Burgers, fries, burritos, donuts, and yes, more pizza await. The detail of these places is striking. The ‘Home of the Whopper’ is now your home, too.
A working movie theater, “The Palace,” is here, too. A movie poster for “Jaws” advertises an old favorite. Or perhaps it references my jaws, chomping bagels in a nearby bakery.
Junk Food Land is surprisingly versatile— much more than a convenience store loaded with candy bars. So many venues are represented here: Childhood memories are rekindled. One cannot help but smile playing Whack-A-Mole once again.
Come for the arcade and midway or purchase gifts, eat at Pizza Planet, catch a movie, or meet friends for coffee. It’s all here, satisfaction for the sweet tooth in all of us.
Come, take a bite.

INTERVIEW WITH A LEGEND
Poulet Koenkamp
Yhishara Cerise
We wanted to make magic.” This was the mindset of Poulet Koenkamp and her design partner in 2009 when they first started Purplemoon Creations. To say things took off is an understatement. “Customers were shopping, items were flying out of the marketplace… It was surreal how much PM grew so quickly.” Though her partner had to bow out due to time restraints, Poulet carried on, taking on the role of design lead for the brand. Having sole creative control, “my main focus was formalwear and a few fantasy outfits.” From there, she sought to improve the brand further by accepting opportunities to dress pageant contestants, hosting in-house styling contests such as “Miss Essence of Purplemoon,” and hiring live models to work at the Purplemoon main store to both showcase new releases and act as customer service representatives. But perhaps the best advertisement and sign that she had “made it” as a designer was simply that “in all the ballrooms, you could see ladies dancing with my dresses.”
However, no matter how successful a brand becomes in Second Life, we all live by the adage of “Real life comes first.” For Poulet, it was a combination of factors that caused her to re-examine the future of Purplemoon Creations. Having a newborn daughter to take care of, seeing the massive upheavals in Second Life with the changeover to mesh, and an irrefusable job offer in real life prompted her to step back and then ultimately close Purplemoon’s doors in 2019.
Then, in November of 2021, the news broke that Poulet was returning to do a limited-time, holidaythemed event— something she was well known for. “The response was insane. I was getting messages all the time, I still do, from customers from way back then delighted to see me back. Encouraging me
to go at it again.” But once the event was over, she found, “I couldn’t let it go again.” It simply wasn’t enough to come back temporarily.
“I slowly started to test the waters in 2022 to see if there was actually room for me in SL.” To be successful, she knows it’s important to have the loyalty and support of her past customers. But she is also looking at her new residents, as well, and so far “they seem to appreciate my work, so here I am once again.”
Poulet has also seen the differences between the SL of 2009 and the SL of 2023. Mesh itself has undergone an evolution from the basic Standard sizes and mesh body part “add-ons” to whole bodies and the resurgence of system layers in the form of Bakes on Mesh. Even the way businesses are run is different now.
She’s noticed that designing has become more “exclusive” to those who have the tools and the technical knowledge and that it takes a higher financial investment to be successful. It’s no longer just creative ability that will make a successful brand here. “I noticed many of the big brands these days have multiple owners; they have teams of people working behind the scenes doing marketing, social media, rigging, designing, customer service, etc. I have always been the one doing all that, so in order to strive, I need to build a big team or keep it small. So far it has been small, but it is changing.” One of the things she did recently was hire a new blogging team to help promote her releases; she also rebranded slightly by shortening the name to simply “PM”.
She has also noticed that the demographic has changed. It’s a “different decade, with different

likes and priorities.” It’s a challenge that Poulet is more than up for. A shopper visiting the PM store today will still find ballgowns and fantasy outfits and a few select pieces from the Purplemoon of the past. However, they will also find the focus has shifted more towards casualwear with a sexy and sophisticated edge, perfect for today’s modern avatar. One thing that has remained unchanged, however: Poulet has earned the loyalty of a devoted customer base. More than great design, technical knowledge, or having a team behind her, she won that loyalty by being kind and giving of herself. That’s the kind of thing that never becomes dated, a thing of the past, or out of style.
