Summer has hit SL, and with it comes all the wonderful home and garden items that take us out of the house and into the backyard, by the beach, or poolside.
I love the designs of summer, and I have been traveling the SL globe collecting all of the pieces you will see today. This scene has taken me about a month to prepare as I wanted to create a place of rest and calm, an oasis from the heat of the first month of summer.
This gorgeous Poolside Villa is from Dead Unicorn, and I bought it back in mid-April in a weekend sale. As soon as I saw it, I knew what I wanted to do with it, and it has been set up on my land slowly taking shape since then.
Around the same time, I also grabbed the Tropez Outdoor Bar set from Zaker and set this up as a poolside bar and snack area with options such as smoothies and fruit, as well as the wine fridge and coffee. Imagine emerging from the pool for a quick cheese platter and a refreshing drink!
As a side note: if any designers are reading this, there is a serious lack of swim-up bars in SL. I looked everywhere.
The next area I rezzed and readied was also from Zaker, the Yumi Lounger Set. It is the perfect place to relax, enjoy a margarita, and even take a nap in the shade. The set includes the loungers with various options of pillows and towels or neither, the parasol, a side table, and the cocktail tray. It also comes with a HUD so you can pick the colours that suit your home and decor. I added the WRONG BBQ Grill on the side so that night meals are an option here, too.
In between these two scenes, we have the Roots Bistro Set from CHEZ MOI in case you need a place for a coffee, pastry, and chat in between dips
in the pool. This set comes with the chair, table, menu, and coffee with loads of animations added in and items that attach with the click of a button
so you can text, read the paper, sip your coffee, or take a selfie. You also have the option of adult or PG versions.
Next to the bar, we have a seated area and more lounging options, because you can never have too many places for relaxation. The [North Oak] + Muir Outdoor Couch paired nicely with the Rattan Loungers from Noveny and the Forgetgruen Liam Vertigal Garden in White. The KAZZA Nuit de Noel Fire Pit completed the look before I added all the other smaller decor items.
Around the corner, we have more Noveny items with these lovely Rattan Papasan chairs, mini tables, and snake plants. The Barcelo Hammocks from CHEZ MOI sit poolside and are just right for people-watching, applying sunblock, or partaking in some more adult pastimes. This hammock also comes with a HUD so you can colour coordinate to your heart’s content.
The last two main areas of this scene are the pergola areas. The first is the Rovino Outdoor Lounge from Bazar which offers the perfect place for chatting with friends in a slightly more secluded area. This set also comes with texture options and loads of animations for singles and couples.
The other pergola spot is also from Bazar and is the Mia Hanging Bed. It comes in PG and adult options and also has a texture-changing HUD so you can match it to whatever environment you choose to put it in.
RESTING BY THE POOL
Once these main items were set up, I then had loads of fun adding all of the decor and plant items to give the pool those finishing touches and to add colour and fun. I especially enjoyed trialing all the floating items and adding the hanging plants and lanterns.
I even got creative and created a platform for the Zen Water Feature from [FOURTH WALL] in the pool, as I really wanted to use it and couldn’t find a space for it that worked or a platform to buy that fit the look. Don’t be afraid to have a go at building and having some fun with textures.
I hope this scene inspires you to get creative with your poolside look this summer. Use fence walls to create private areas and nooks. Be bold with adding fountains, water features, and plants. And, as always, never hesitate to mix and match items from a variety of different stores and designers.

HE SANG HER A LOVE SONG
Sarah E. Brenham
Mr. Frank (singerdonfranko) made the decision to ‘live’ in Second Life on March 6th, 2007, after seeing it advertised in the media. It usually takes new citizens time to find their groove in SL, but as luck would have it, Mr. Frank was able to establish himself quickly in Second Life and be led back to his favorite passion. You see, when Mr. Frank was a teenager, he discovered that he had a gift and love for singing. Wanting to encourage his talent, Mr. Frank’s father entered him in some competitions in his home country of Germany, where he ended up winning them all! Unfortunately, circumstances had led to him being unable to perform much in Real Life after that period of time. The people whom he happened to meet during his early days on SL took him to his first concert in a virtual environment, and this changed the trajectory of his path here in Second Life forever.
After that show ended, Mr. Frank began his journey to becoming one of SL’s most popular singers. What surprised me the most when learning the initial steps he took to get where he is today, is that he gave his avatar a makeover. While this is probably not shocking to most, it was to me because I don’t associate appearance with singing. While I am aware that singers do tend to create an image for themselves for a variety of reasons, I just have always paid more attention to a singer’s voice rather than their look. Anyway, while I can go on and on about how talented Mr. Frank is, I highly recommend that you go to one of his shows to discover that fact for yourself. The last concert of his was so much fun! He has written and composed many of the songs he performs, which sets him apart as an artist. I am always envious of those who are able to express themselves through song. Even though I have been a writer for many years, I still don’t have the skill to write lyrics. When Mr. Frank does perform a cover tune, he typically prefers to do songs from the Broadway, Jazz, and Swing genres.
Mr. Frank was able to make his dream come true; even-though the road he took to get there was not the one he started on. As you know, I teased earlier about the possibility of him performing again in Real Life. Well, he and his team are in the planning stages of his triumphant return to the stage! I have always found it funny in a way that our goals and dreams seem to still happen regardless of how we go about them. How? I am not sure. It seems to be one of life’s beautiful little mysteries. While I typically enjoy finding the answers that I don’t have. This is one inquiry that I don’t need to. Nor does anyone. I and hopefully you have too, have learned from Mr. Frank’s story, that you may not know how you will achieve your aspirations, but that you will in time.

Excuse
me, did you say
MACHINIMA
Coco St. George
The original word was “machinema,” a portmanteau of machine and cinema, and it was used to describe movies or videos made within video games. At some point— we don’t know exactly when —the term became “machinima.” Fun fact: the word “portmanteau,” which describes a word made up of two words, is a portmanteau by itself and comes from the French words porter (to carry) and manteau (coat).
to the premium version, which allowed her to make longer videos with sound. It didn’t take too long for her to decide she wanted to do something more than one-minute videos. Machinima was the answer she was looking for.
“I’ve always known that machinima is the art of making videos using video games or 3D for any sort of video,” Godiva explains. “In Second Life this is very interesting because of all the possibilities we have available with the avatars and the beauty of our 3D world. I consider any video made within SL to be machinima, and they can range from simple short dance videos to more complex and story-driven ones, with even voice acting... a lot is being made in this domain!”
But let’s go back to machinima, get technical, and check Wikipedia’s definition: “According to Guinness World Records, machinima is the art of making animated narrative films from computer graphics, most commonly using the engines found in video games.”
Now you are going to object that Second Life is not a game, and thus, according to that definition, you can’t do machinima here. But of course you can. To prove it, we talked with Godiva Varela, creator of the Funky Diva saga, a cinematic adventure that you can enjoy by clicking here. Godiva started making short videos in Second Life with Gyazo before upgrading
Of course, making machinima in SL comes with its own set of challenges, the main ones being the limitations of the platform itself and the hardware that is being used, she adds. “For example, hardware may limit the number of things you can display at any given moment or the environment you’re planning to display in the video,” she explains. “Luckily, the newer versions of the viewers have a much better performance and allow us to do things we could never imagine before. I gladly welcome the implementation of PBR, for instance.”
Regarding the limitations set by the platform itself, she explains that they are “mostly the animations one can have available at any given moment for specific actions, as well as the nature itself of SL, with its physics and way of doing things.”
“If you want to tell a story,” Godiva continues, “you always need the proper animations, to better portray the actions of the characters. Be it acrobatics, like hanging off a ledge on an action scene, or a well-

placed punch in a battle. They are always important, even for simple actions like walking or standing. It is one of the many factors that will contribute to the immersion into the video. In the past, I did some animations myself for my Top Gun video, because at the moment, I could not find the right animations for one particular take. However, I didn’t want to keep digging deeper into this, because if you want good animations, you must spend a good amount of time learning how to do them properly; and if you decide to animate everything yourself, the videomaking process will take forever. So that’s why I always think it is better to adapt rather than try to force the ideas.”
“If you can manage to get around these things, the final limitation might be the budget!” she warns. “It is always a factor when getting props and animations. It is not always taken into account, but having the best available props, animations, outfits, etc., can totally change the face of a video.”
About the hardware needed to make machinima, Godiva is clear: “I would recommend the best you can afford! With the latest viewers, the performance goes really high, and SL behaves more like other video games. So I highly recommend building a computer with a good single-core performance (does not matter the number of cores). A good Nvidia video card makes it far easier to record videos by using the built-in software and also responds very well to the graphics enhancers some people like to use in SL. For RAM, I recommend at least 16GB of RAM, ideally 32GB or even more if possible. And for a drive, I recommend an M2 NVME (with builtin cache), so SL can handle the viewer cache super fast and also run more smoothly.”
That may sound like a tall task in budgetary terms, “but you can start doing machinima with any computer, really. In the end, it is the director who makes all the difference and manages to work within their limitations.”
Once you have the hardware, you need some kind of software. “Yes, I started using a software called ‘Filmora’; it is very simple and very useful for bloggers or more simple projects; it is mainly focused on social media with all its built-in titles and transitions.”
“But later I decided I wanted something more,” she continues, “so I asked among my fellow directors,
and one of them recommended DaVinci Resolve. With this new editing software, I feel really in control of what I’m doing because of all the extra possibilities I have vs. the software I used before. I can now do more complex composition of images, more convincing green screening, and even some basic effects like laser beams. The possibilities are endless, and I am always learning something new with this software!”
Once you have both hardware and software, what you need is a script for the movie you have in mind. Godiva takes care of the scripts, too. “I like to do everything myself; I always try to keep the number of extras limited so I have fewer exterior factors to worry about,” she explains. “When you make videos in SL, you end up doing all the roles, be it filming, voice acting, editing, creating the costumes, building locations, taking care of the illumination, etc.”
“It can be very time-consuming,” she adds. “But that depends on the complexity of what you want to do: sometimes it comes out naturally and sometimes it takes a long time. Other times you write down an idea for a video, but once you try to apply it, you may deem it too difficult or it can look very bad due to limitations, so it is always a good idea to be able to quickly adapt to changes and things not going the way you want.”
“I mostly use alts,” Godiva reveals. “The three main characters of Funky Diva are just me, for example. I invite my friends and family when I need more normal characters or humans. But if there will be some giant robot or a cyborg dolphin, then it is just me being a puppeteer with them. At the end of the day, it feels like playing with dolls,” she concludes with a giggle.
Regarding her character Funky Diva, Godiva reveals that she is “my favorite creation, and I hope she will have many more episodes. Right now, she has Episode 1, and then there are the Halloween and Christmas specials.”
“And in the works, there’s an episode filmed at Fantasy Fair, which needs a lot of editing, but will be a parody of the game Final Fantasy 8,” she announces. “It will be called Funky Fantasy Ocho. I hope that one will be released very soon! I also have in the works the script for an episode in Japan, where Dolphin Mic recruits Godzilla. So expect a lot of fun to come!”
Bosl edition 58
Currently, at the Second Life Cinema, moviegoers can enjoy Funky Diva: Origins, an episode she made specifically for that venue. That, by the way, is a funny story. “Yes, I was contacted by the SL team because they really liked the character, and wanted Funky Diva at their cinema,” she remembers. “So I got to work on a special episode with extended length to be displayed there (before this one, there was only the first episode and the two specials). Because of the extra length, I wanted to further develop the origins of the character. In the original episodes, the intro shows her being struck by lightning out of a flying saucer, so in Origins, you get to see this really happening on screen and the transition from human to Funky Diva.”
The premiere of Funky Diva: Origins at the Second Life Cinema was a red-carpet event, of course. “Indeed, it was a great experience!” she says with a big smile. “A lot of people attended the premiere, even some directors I really admire! That day, by the way, I had a lot of stress because suddenly, my internet went offline out of nowhere and I had to access using Internet from my phone! And I was very aware of the significance of SL Cinema, because I had attended the premiere of some other films there in the past, so I was really happy my time had come to display my creation there.”
Speaking of other directors, “there are several groups of directors in SL,” adds Godiva. “I like to participate in them all and share my creations and thoughts with others. The group I have the most fun with is ‘Machinima Mondays’, which holds meetings every Monday at its own location. There we share and watch each other creations, and also get good feedback to improve over time; anyone can attend there and enjoy, even if they are not a director.
Godiva says she has no contact whatsoever with the film industry in real life. “I never studied anything art-related or have any background on it. So nobody in RL really imagines I do anything artistic within SL,” she explains. She could say SL has allowed her to unchain her creativity. “Second Life is such a great platform to uncover hidden creativity and talent. I never imagined myself doing videos years ago; now I want to do more and better each time. It’s something that I might move to my real life someday and help me there as well.”

SINATRA CHARITIES MUSIC
Compe Lockwood
Move over Taylor Swift, ‘Ol Blue Eyes’ is back.
He is more than a singer. He is a legend and a gold standard of music. And though he died in 1998, he lives on in 2024. He is Frank A. Sinatra (Frankasinatra)— now appearing in Second Life.
The avatar version owns and operates Sinatra Charities Music, an SL site dedicated to his RL famous counterpart, Francis Albert Sinatra. But SCM is more than a tribute site: as the name suggests, it is a charity.
The expansive property supports Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)/Doctors Without Borders (DWB). In four years, Sinatra has raised L$600,000 charitable linden bucks for this worthy cause. The RL Sinatra would be proud.
who wish to relive their music, Sinatra Charities Music is just a mouse click away. On this land, we meet the man of song.
“I like the idea of keeping the music alive,” notes SL’s Frank A. Sinatra. “This place is really for educational purposes, celebrating the artists with lots of exhibits and biographies.”
Starting in the 1940s, the singer of renown packed concert venues almost until the day he died on May 14, 1998. Without a ticket, fans could not get near him. But in Second Life, you can meet him. He is also available for parties and other venues. But let’s start on the streets of New York City, Sinatra’s domain.
For younger avatars perhaps unfamiliar with the excellent singers of years gone by or older avatars
He adds, “Of course, there are spots here for listening to the music, dancing, and attending concerts.”
But there is more. The site information notes, “The Sinatra Club has been in existence for many years. It started in a tiny underground bistro in a subway and is now a place with numerous beautiful and intimate locales. It has three main missions in SL all of which are for the purpose of informing, educating and celebrating the accomplishments of so many great artists and in supporting MSF/Doctors Without Borders in the process.”
Sinatra’s three main objectives are:
- One, this is a charity first, raising money primarily through donations. All proceeds go directly to the MSF/DWB’s accounting office in New York City. All linden fees and site expenses are paid for from SL Frank A. Sinatra’s pocket.
- Two, this is a celebration of the music of Frank Sinatra and other artists with 24/7 music streams. The site’s Pavilion honors and provides

information about the wonderful singers of years gone by. Regularly scheduled Sinatra concerts are held at 6 pm SLT on Saturdays, on a biweekly basis. Special and private concerts are also available.
- Three, this is a celebration of ‘The Great American Songbook.’ Special concerts featuring these talented artists appearing with Mr. Sinatra including Perry Como, Natalie Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Dean Martin, and others.
and the Great American Songbook.
The great old standards are always playing, as if providing a soundtrack for exhibits, museums, and retrospectives throughout.
One is taken back to the days when singers did not rely on pyrotechnics like fireworks and explosions. There were no strobes flashing, billowing smoke, or computer-generated light shows. No, these were the crooners— men and women who performed love ballads of the day using the only stage tool they had: talent.
Having said that, let the tour begin.
“I have numerous venues on this property,” says Frank during an impromptu tour of all things Big Apple. Framed with an NYC skyline, one enters the Sinatra Club with 12 teleport destinations for consideration.
There is the Singer’s Pavilion, with information about the great crooners of old. There is also the Retrospective Exhibit, a collection of Sinatra artifacts including record labels and signs promoting upcoming concerts – in 1947. The others include NYC, Paris, The Black Rose and Noir region, the ocean area, a street with shopping, and several museums and retrospectives.
In addition to music, visitors can find dance floors, bars, and cozy visiting areas for a gathering of Sinatra fans, people wanting to support its charities, or for those enjoying a gathering of friends.
Just being here is a pleasurable change of pace. There is no lag, no staff. Enjoy in peace the scenic, cozy venues and exhibits in honor of Sinatra’s music
Those days live again. For more information, join the Sinatra Group for notices of “Sinatra Sings Songs at Six on Saturday” and special events. Or contact Frank through his site for information and to book a private Sinatra concert. Provide ‘Ol Blue Eyes a list of songs you would like performed, and he will be pleased to sing for you and your friends with all proceeds going to MSF/DWB.
Or just visit the site to find a wealth of information about the singers your ancestors adored. Leading that list was Frank Sinatra, a star both back in the day, and today in Second Life.

HOW TO DJ: Yummy shares her passion
TCoco St. George
he restless and creative mind may find in Second Life plenty of artistic ways to express their creativity. Maybe that’s why Yummy has been around for over 16 years and counting. Since she studied music at several schools, she has found her passion in music and brought it into Second Life. “I studied piano, classical music composition, baroque in the style of J. S. Bach, jazz chord progressions, etc.” Not surprisingly, she’s also been a DJ for years now, namely at her own club, the Blackhouse.
YouTube to MP3 Converter. It is free, but I suggest the paid premium version.”
She pauses, trying to order her thoughts.
“Next you need a software application, where you will load your songs to be played into a streaming service”, she continues. “There are several. For example, VirtualDJ is a very popular option although it comes with a heavy price tag: $19 per month, or $299 if you want to buy it. Personally, I use SAM Broadcaster Pro, which sells for $249.”
Passion is the word that comes to mind when Yummy talks about music, her eyes sparkle as she tries to explain all the particulars of her profession. She starts by describing what you need to become a DJ. The first thing, of course, is music.
“You need a method of collecting songs and space to store them on your local storage device,” she explains. “A common method is to download songs from YouTube (preferably the official versions), using a program from DVDVideosoft called
There are cheaper options, of course, especially for those who are only testing the waters. “Also a very cheap way to start is to use the free Winamp application”, she explains. “It is a little trickier to set up but I heard that it can work but with limited options.”
Then she summarizes the requirements of a DJ: “You need YouTube to MP3 Converter, SAM Broadcaster Pro, and an SL streaming service that you pay every week. I prepay a year in advance so about L$1,200.”
And of course a microphone, “if you want to mix voice with your music; you will need a microphone and make sure your software handles voice-over.”
She has a weekly DJ gig at her club, the Blackhouse, but she also curates the music stream in it. “I use a cloud service that runs when I sleep to shuffle and provide music to the club 24/7,” she explains. “I can override it with a more immediate controllable solution, SAM Broadcaster DJ, which is offered when you buy the Sam Cloud… but that is $280 a year.” This has the obvious advantage of avoiding the annoying advertising that is so common on Internet radio stations.

HOW TO DJ - YUMMY SHARES HER PASSION
Why would anyone decide being a DJ is the path they want to tread when it implies so many financial burdens?
“Well, I love interacting with the people and creating dialog around the songs, or random trivia, or even sexual innuendos,” she replies with a naughty smile. “I like making it more a social experience than just a listening experience. Also, to make it about discovering new music and exploring different genres.”
Her relationship with music goes very deep. Not only did she study piano and composition, but also “recording engineering; I had my own home studio but I never had a good technical musical ear. I just knew how to make it all work.”
“Now I am engrossed in AI music,” she continues excitedly. “It’s very, very easy to compose songs using AI aids for melody or lead, chord progressions, bass, drums and rhythm, and even to create artificial vocals using a text-tovoice AI.”
“So you can be your own at-home producer and create whole songs and present them to on Spotify, for example, or other various music presentation platforms,” she concludes, promising to play her music “just so people get an idea about how you can create your own sounds and instruments.”
About the concerns that AI will eventually replace human talent, Yummy is categorical: “It will and it is replacing the human workforce. I feel it will create a lot of bland mediocre products as everyone becomes an artist, be it music, art, video, film, or literature.”
In case we would be flooded by mediocre AI artworks, she says she hopes “the cream will rise to the top and there will still be outlets for true original creators”.
“But the honeymoon of AI and wannabe short-cut-takers, sort of like everyone
wants to be a social-media creator, or an only-fans star, will flatten out due to everyone jumping on the bandwagon,” she adds.
Yummy has noticed a lot of mashups with old popular songs. “AI, or should I say at least intelligent software, is used to make those mashups,” she explains. “Technically, (generative) AI is supposed to be able to learn and create unforeseen solutions on its own based on ongoing processing. So a lot of things called AI are not truly an autonomous thinking solution provider, but for sake of discussion… let’s say there is a pre-true AI explosion of creative products.”
Back to the DJ job, Yummy tackles an aspect that for some may be decisive, but that she minimizes: the tips a DJ may get from the audience. The fun should be the motivation, not the lindens you may earn. It’s not a job, it’s a passion, which could be her motto. Besides, earnings are wildly variable. “I have made as little as zero linden for a three-hour session,” she recalls. “Of course, I remember the one time I made L$4,000.”
“I have to realize it balances out at the end.”
That’s not bad for such an exhausting job.
“Oh, it’s not exhausting at all,” she cuts in. “Two hours goes by fast when people are interacting. Yes, it can be taxing when there are many requests, and there are a lot of people in your ear gabbing about everything and nothing.”
“Besides, good DJs listen and react to the local chat with appropriate impromptu song titles… reading the room if you will,” she adds. “Of course, this is hard, or impossible to do if you’re playing music without lyrics, like House or Electronic Dance music.”
The lyrics, she explains, help the audience to identify with the music, the chorus, or a subject for further banter. Because yes, at the end of the day, having fun while helping others to have a great time is what being a DJ is about.

Landscapes and gardens in SL are often like collaborations between strangers. Some creators making the individual elements of flowers, trees and other plants. Then the sim designers putting these elements and others together in different combinations. Finally the photographer will respond to what is seen using light and atmosphere to create an image of how it feels to be in that place. Sims come and go or are re-made with the changing seasons. All of which echoes what happens in RL landscapes and gardens. So photographs are a way of preserving those fleeting moments and celebrating all those different aspects of creativity and beauty.
