ndre Leon Talley wore many hats during his 73 years of life. While most know him as the racially ground-breaking creative director for Vogue, he was also an author, stylist, role model, mentor, editor, radio host, fashion influencer, and icon. Later in life, he was a judge on America’s Next Top Model and served on the Board of Trustees for the Savannah College of Art and Design. He also featured in several documentaries, including a 2017 biography called The Gospel According to Andre. A clever title, as Talley was someone who greatly valued his faith and church life. This value was not solely due to his personal spiritual journey. Church was the first place where he began to develop his sense of style. He would later say, “the clothes, the hats, the gloves, everything impeccable,” and his first fashion role model was his grandmother. Talley always stated that he owed her a great deal when it came to that because even though she “didn’t talk about style” to him, “she was style.” Other personal lessons came from growing up in poverty in North Carolina. Talley learned that “taste comes from within,” and lived his life by the following motto: “You can find beauty in your environment. You find beauty in your experience as a human being. You try to find beauty in everyone. You get through the day better if you can be positive about the word beauty and you can find beauty and you must not approach things negatively. You must always see in a stranger something beautiful or say something nice.” Such attitude helped him a great deal in surviving as a Black person during the Jim Crow era. He made A N DR E L E ON TA L L EY T R I BU T E

the decision early on that he was going to “escape this southern segregation,” but his method to do so was “through knowledge— knowledge and grace.” Those two things would have equal impact on his life when he attended university. When he was younger, the knowledge of the fashion world began with his first Vogue magazine. He studied the pages, fascinated by the images of the clothes and people. However, instead of wanting to pursue a career in fashion, Talley originally chose to pursue education and wanted to be a French teacher. To that end, he pursued bachelor’s and master’s degrees in French Literature. But it was grace— as well as his innate charisma and affable nature —that opened doors in his social life for all that would come later as he met and befriended people with ties to the fashion industry. He knew very well that his personality was not enough to keep him there if he should get a job in that field. And that’s where his studying of Vogue paid off. It was his incredible knowledge of fashion that got him noticed by the legendary Diana Vreeland when he was an intern. After Talley impressed her, she helped him find work at Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine. From there, he would also work for Women’s Wear Daily, W, Ebony, and a few others. Then in 1988, he was hired to be the first African-American creative director for Vogue magazine under the editorship of Anna Wintour. It goes without saying that he was nervous, but his response to that was the following: “I had all the confidence because my research— my power —my power comes from my knowledge not from my looks although my looks were armor.” For his first day at Vogue, his armor consisted of a grey Perry Ellis maxi

coat. And the rest, as they say, is fashion history. One of the most amazing things about Talley was that once that landmark door opened for him, he in return held it open for other people of color to walk through. He often used his considerable influence with designers to get them to hire more Black models when showing their collections. He would help promote brands by introducing high profile clients to designers (such as Michelle Obama to Jason Wu). He styled Serena Williams and Michelle Obama; mentored the photographer Dario Calmese and Naomi Campbell, and featured models and designers of color in the magazines he worked for (particularly Japanese designers). But regardless of how high his career took him, he never lost his footing. Talley was always firmly grounded in family, believing that “Family, no matter where you go, is everything”— even if, for him, that family was made up of close friends.

ho among us has not needed a friend when unmasking the bold, at times daunting, world of Second Life? Who will help us, guide us, be there when we need a hand? Those helping hands belong to Naria Panthar, master of two worlds– Second Life and YouTube. She melds the two for teachable moments. A quick YouTube search shows hundreds of Naria’s streams. They include Saturday Sales, Fifty Linden Friday, All about Mesh Heads, and a trip to Gorenjska, Slovenia. And that’s just page one. She averages about a thousand views per video. As of January 2022, she started the New Year with over 10,000 subscribers and over two million— that’s not a typo —two million views. For many of us, such success would go to our big primmed heads— mesh or otherwise. Not so with Naria. Helping others by sharing her “oh wow, have you guy’s seen this?” attitude is genuine. People learn from her.

One of those others working with Naria is Timm Novak. “I don’t know about working with Naria,” Timm corrects me. “She is my best friend. We just hang out and have fun.” Naria agrees, stating “That’s exactly how we want to keep it. I don’t want my friends to feel like they have a job.” From exploring SL, Team Naria expanded into reviewing sales— where the bargains are, what to buy, and what to avoid. She also offers tutorials on all things SL. She breaks down complicated SL techniques into easy-to-understand pieces. Newbies and veterans alike experience and often share “ah ha! I never knew that!” moments. She will also take you along on surfing, boating, and people watching. When you return home, she will show you how to decorate it. Keeping up with Naria’s YouTube video recording schedule is easy. She doesn’t have one. There is no research or practice. Everything she does is spontaneous. What you watch is as unscripted as possible.

The social media star’s journey started in 2016, when after a 6-year break, she returned to SL. “I saw that the avatars looked a lot better than they did in 2009,” she recalls. “I tried making photos and blogging, but that was oversaturated and got boring.” She noticed others were reviewing SL items on YouTube but were “overly nice about it.” “I wanted to do it my way,” she says. Her way is nothing held back, informative, and often hilarious views of the cyber world in which we live.

“I want it to feel more real and unedited,” Naria says. “We do random acts, stuff I would do anyway in SL, like fixing the land, putting an object on sale.”

She started her YouTube channel in 2017. “There were a lot less of us back then,” Naira says, recalling her early-day competition. “I started with exploring videos and mostly alone. Later I started bringing others in with me.”

She notes that many become frustrated with SL and abandon it. “When they start out and reach a point of giving up in situations, such as making a good avatar, we are here to help.”

NA R IA PA N T HA R

She explains the end result: “I want visitors to have fun and learn something from watching. I want them to see what SL is about, how to go about it, and how to make it easier to play. In addition, we strive to show what you can do in SL, what are the options, what is out there to explore, and how to avoid boredom.”

Her videos often derive from informally hanging out online with friends where ideas are formulated out of the blue and— cyber cameras rolling —they run with it. Viewers often IM or email questions or topics they want her to address. “We create a lot of tutorials that way,” she adds. SL is not her full-time job. She does have one in real life. On YouTube, she records a video about three times a week on average. Viewer favorites include shopping and sales. “The SL trend I am seeing is more people are migrating to sales or events,” says Naria. She takes us there, explains what’s hot and what’s not— not from an expert, but from a friend. Her future goals are to continue what she is doing and more of it. “I like making tutorials and want to make more. People need help, especially those just starting out. I see they have a lot of problems and questions. I receive a lot of IMs from frustrated avatars.” Naria adds, “It’s not their fault. SL is hard. So it’s hard to get new people to play SL. A lot of them give up.” There is always more to learn about SL, and not just for novices. “There is always something new I never knew existed,” Naria acknowledges about her cyberworld visits. “I enjoy learning it and, at the same time, sharing what I learn with others.” Viewers gravitate to her ‘we are all in this together’ attitude. She adds, “I want to always keep it fun and light, not overwhelming.” And she does, every week, on a YouTube channel near you. Tune in.

hoy, ye landlubbers! Time to get aboard and view the sights from the decks. There is no poop deck, because that sounds gross. My decks are clean! I had fun playing with this cool build from Scarlet Creative. I am now living in a houseboat. I mean, why not? I have it sitting next to the build from last month’s article, and I just float between the two (pun intended). It is Second Life, so why shouldn’t I have two homes? There are no rules here— or mortgages! This houseboat is a two-sapce area, with openplan upstairs and downstairs. I created a living/ kitchen area on the ground floor and a bedroom on the second. I apologise for not showing the kitchen, but as the kitchen bench is such a lovely long one, I had trouble fitting it all in a photo!

I am often asked where I get all the houses and furniture. I blog for some stores, so I use their items, but I also haunt the sales and visit a whole heap of stores and events. Buying and decorating a home does not have to break the bank, but you do need to collect and have a lot of patience. Building up your collection takes a while. So, whether your home is on solid ground, in the air, or in a swamp, enjoy getting ready for spring and replacing snow for greenery. The change of season is the perfect time to replace your old house or redecorate. Don’t forget to do the same with your outdoor areas! It all creates one big picture. Have fun, decorators!

I used a lot of furniture from Scarlet Creative, as well as a huge variety from other stores. This shows that you can mix and match furniture from different designers without it feeling hodgepodge. Some things just work together if you get your theme right. In this build, I have gone with a bit of a shabby chic look, mixed with some more modern items. Did I mention that in Second Life there are no rules? Dare to defy. I also wanted to create a swampish look for the outside, which puts the two quite different homes in a similar environment. Both work, and it just shows that you can work with what you have to create a look you want. Throw in some huge trees and lily pads, and you are good to go. I just use the jet ski to go between if I don’t want to get my feet wet. Easy.
