As stated in BOSL’s announcement heralding the new event, “Spirit of BOSL is open to all human avatars, female and male, who would like to represent the BOSL family of companies while they learn what it takes to move into the fashion world as a full model, or even just as a fashion executive behind the scenes.”

T he lights are low; the auditorium, empty; and the sound system, silent. The BOSL Innovation Pavilion is quiet now. But not for long. For the home of Miss Virtual World, galas, and balls— with more glitz and sparkle than a jewelry store explosion— has a new game in town. BOSL has got the spirit, and so can you. Introducing the Spirit of BOSL, the pageant for the rest of us. No experience is necessary. Actually, no experience is preferred. The Spirit of BOSL is not just a contest or pageant. It was created to encourage those without modeling backgrounds to seize the day, grab the horns, and jump into the world of fashion and brand representation.

SPIRIT OF BOSL Compe Lockwood BOSL SPIRIT

Being new to the fashion biz makes some understandably nervous. Don’t be. “We aren’t going to throw them out to the wolves, so to speak,” says Jamee. The Spirit of BOSL is more than an event. It is a process one learns. Some assembly is required – on your part. But instructions are readily Workshopsavailable. will be offered to teach the basics of style, how to walk a runway, and how to work the crowd. One learns how to interface work with photographers and deal with pesky news reporters— like those other guys, not me.

One male and one female will be the final winners. Each will receive $10,000L, a cover shot on BOSL Magazine in 2023, and the opportunity to attend the new BLVD Pro Academy on full Inscholarship.addition, you may work amongst some pretty cool people— SL fashion professionals —and learn about the industry, which could open doors to a new career with the BOSL organization. Your co-host in this path of dreams to reality are BOSL’s DiamondGem Destiny and Jamee Sandalwood. The Best of BOSL caught up with these two ladies, which is not easy. They are among the busiest people in SL. We interviewed each in the BOSL Innovation Pavilion before the stage where the show must— and soon will —go on. We learned the pageant is not a pageant, per se. “I don’t want to call it a pageant,” says Jamee. “It is not traditional, but rather a new competition designed for those without much or any modeling experience. The Spirit of BOSL celebrates the spirit of all residents of Second Life. It is not just any contest or pageant.” It is a contest encouraging those without experience, to gain it. She continues, “We knew we had to adapt to a changing fashion environment here in SL. Traditional pageants were no longer drawing the entries, and many people left.”

By press time, pre-events and planning will be well underway. After two months of applications, submissions, interviews, and auditions, the official contestants will be announced on August 22. Following the announcement, the candidates will meet. Workshops begin September 3, followed by the first runway challenge on September 24. Two more runway competitions and three photo challenges will take place in October and TheNovember.Grand

The Spirit of BOSL may be the best opportunity in SL to transfer from today’s avatar to tomorrow’s supermodel. You will never know until you try. That’s the spirit – The Spirit of BOSL. SPIRIT OF BOSL

Finale is December, followed with the Post Party on December 11. “I believe this will be a good experience for the contestants,” noted DiamondGem Destiny, the event’s other go-to person and former Miss Virtual World candidate. “Our goal is to encourage everyone to participate, especially those with no modeling background.” From the beginning, inclusion has been the goal. “People are not prepared enough for traditional pageants that are designed for experienced models,” adds DiamondGem. She recalls, “One day, Jamee, Reign [Reign Congrejo, BOSL’s CEO] and I were brainstorming. We thought a change might do us good. After several meetings, we decided on the Spirit of BOSL. The program offers something for Thinkeveryone.”ofthe new event as Miss Virtual World Lite. “There are many changes in the Spirit competition,” explains DiamondGem. “For example, we decided not to have interviews. We are trying to make it as simple as possible.”

But what happens when what you want to exhibit are buildings, monumental structures worth admiring because of the beauty of their forms, their historical significance, or their architectural value?

If you are wondering how a house could enter the category of “an attraction worth visiting”, you should come and see the House of the Tragic Poet in Pompeii. This is a Roman house built in the second century BC. This house has the celebrated “Cave Canem” (i.e., “beware of the dog”) mosaic at the entrance. Though small, the house is richly decorated with frescoes depicting scenes from Greek mythology. We have no idea who lived here, and the name of “Tragic Poet” is as good as any; this wonderful house was also known as the “Iliadic House” because of the scenes from Homer’s epic poem found there. Those panels, though, are no longer there; they were transferred to the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, Italy. Now, we all know mausoleums are large, impressive buildings that contain a tomb, especially the tomb of a great leader or hero. This word is derived from ‘Mausolus’, who ruled the ancient region of Caria until his death c. 353 BC; His widow (who happened to be his sister) commissioned the building of a monumental tomb in Halicarnassus, the capital city of his kingdom. Nowadays, this city is known as Bodrum, located in modern Turkey. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was one of the Seven Wonders, and what remains of it can be found in the British Museum. Or, you can choose to admire this architectonical jewel in tact on Museum Island instead.Another monumental structure you can appreciate on Museum Island is the temple of Abu Simbel, located in Real Life near Aswan, Egypt. This place has an interesting story that goes back to 13th century BC, when the original twin temples were carved on the mountainside, and spans all the way to the sixties in the 20th century, when they had to be relocated. This move was required by the construction of a dam in the Nile River that created an artificial lake, in which the temples would have been submerged. This feat of engineering was conducted as part of a UNESCO campaign. The temples were built as a monument for king Ramesses II. His wife, Nefertari, and their children COCO ST. GEORGE

Organizing such an exhibition would be impossible for obvious reasons, the main of which is their size and the fact that many buildings from the Ancient World are no longer with us; all we have of them are the descriptions that allow us to understand their magnificence and the importance they had for our ancestors. That’swhy a project like Museum Island is possible only in Second Life, where Carlolello Zapatero was able to create impressive reproductions of some of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, as well as other buildings, temples, and houses that, in one way or another, stood out.

W hen we think of the word ‘museum’, what comes to mind is a place where objects are exhibited— which, in fact, is Webster’s definition: an enclosed structure usually holding works of art, such as paintings and sculptures, or historical artifacts, like Lincoln’s hat and Franklin’s kite. Of course, ‘museum’ also refers to the institution that manages such places.

Bosl edition 34 also appear in the carvings on a much smaller scale, leaving all the spotlight to the powerful king. Fortunately, on Museum Island you can also visit Nefertari’s tomb and admire the intricate decoration on the walls. Don’t forget to bring your Rosetta Stone if you want to read the inscriptions, as well.Itwas dawn in the ravines of Delphi when Apollo killed the dragon Python who guarded the oracle, and so there, on the top of Mount Parnassus, the Temple of Apollo was erected. The high priestess, known as Pythia (origin of ‘pythoness’) worked inside the temple where, under the influence of the vapors and fumes emanating from a natural chasm beneath the temple, she contacted Apollo to get the answers to visitors’ inquiries. You may not believe this is possible, but who knows? If you make the right offering for the gods, you may find the answer to the problem that has been pestering youBeforelately. the Romans, there were the Etruscans, and one of the Etruscan goddesses was Menerva, goddess of war, art, wisdom, and medicine. She contributed much of her character to the Roman Minerva. Being a powerful deity, it was only natural that a temple was dedicated to her, and that’s how the Temple of Portonoaccio, in Veio, Rome, came into being. In fact, it was the first temple erected in Etruria, c. 510 BC, and one of the most venerated sanctuaries in the region. The unforgiving march of time, alas, took the best of it; now, all that is left is a heap of rubble and lots of restoration plans, each more impossible to implement than the last.

The unforgiving march of time… it passes us by, slowly eroding the legacies of our ancestors. To fully appreciate the splendor of these builds, you are advised to take the virtual tour of Museum Island and enjoy the wonders it has to offer.

BITS AND PIECES PHOTOS: ARYA BRAVEHEART

Bosl edition 44 S eptember has sneaked up on me rather quickly, and I am pretty excited about it. It means that in SL, autumn is upon us— the season with all of my favourite colours. I can’t wait to ditch the sand, sea, and palms for coloured leaves, pumpkins, and rainy scenes. However, this month I am not showing you autumn items. I am saving that for October. This month I wanted to pay homage to decor: the pieces that can sometimes get overlooked in a scene among all the larger furniture items. September is celebrating the close-up photos and all the things that made a home look comfortable and personal. I had fun creating different little scenes that weren’t reliant on each other. This meant that I didn’t need to stick to a set colour scheme or style. I could just find bits and pieces that worked together, which meant using a bit of old and new in some setups. I would want a certain item to go in a set space, and this required searching through my inventory to get just the right sized piece. It also reminded me that I need to sort my inventory more often.

I hope you enjoy the little spaces that I have created. Some are cluttered, and some are not. It just depends on the purpose of the scene. The joy of doing this was not having to conform to any rules. It is design chaos. Chaos works well with the beginning of fall because this is the season of mess with all the fallen leaves, the muddy lawns, and the onset of Halloween clutter. Embrace it. Enjoy.

Sita Writer MRS. JAVA DEVINE Java DeVine

QUEEN OF THE BLUES Mrs.

QUEEN OF THE BLUES

And speaking of the blues and fun: meet Mrs. Java DeVine! No one we know here at BOSL sings the blues with more heart. Java’s music is a mix of gospel and electric; she is the ultimate diva of modern blues, with a voice that leaves you wanting more. As Mrs. Java DeVine explains, “Blues music tells a story of peoples’ lives and touches peoples’ souls. I learned about blues music from my daddy and aunts, listening to those down-home blues as a little girl. I would sing in the church with my grandma and learn the blues music to perform for family functions.” We are glad she learned and is following that path. Java is modest when it comes to her ability to draw us into her soul-searching songs. We wondered what draws her to the blues: “I was given the gift to be able to sing the blues. This is where all music comes from, the heart and soul of all genres of music. I am honored that I was blessed to have this talent and voice. Blues music brought people together from well-known blues singers like Billie Holiday and BB King, Buddy Guy, and Elvis Presley, to Mick Jagger, John Mayer, and Garth Brooks.”

“Blues music tells a story of peoples’ lives and touches peoples’ souls.”

Another question we brought up was how Java DeVine came up with her name, because it is as energetic and as soulful as her voice. “I came up with Java because I love coffee! I know that most people drink it in the morning, and that is when you get up and go… coffee hits the soul, and that is when I start to sing— and I hope you do, too, or if not, listen to your soul to start your day! As for my last name DeVine, it’s because I sing so divinely and the name just rolled off my tongue so well; I decided it was who I was going to be in SL.”

I n terms of music, the blues to many of us is part of the heartbeat —an eternal rhythm felt all over the world. as the great BB King said, “There’s a sadness to all kinds of music if you want to hear it. There’s also happiness to it if you want to hear it. Blues was started by the slaves, and I think everybody thinks that it all should be sad ... even some of the slaves had fun with it.”

QUEEN OF THE BLUES MRS. JAVA DEVINE

With all this talent, it is only natural that Java decided to perform in SL with a tad bit of help from her friends. “I cannot thank my long-time friends enough for all the encouragement. Case Bouvier, JaaJaaMarie, and Cecil Jarman that encouraged me to perform at their club, Sarena’s. At this club, I met other performers that introduced me to my now manager/granddaughter Sole Starr Corleone. She helped to promote and market my talent all over the grid and even helped me to be recognized as ‘SL Queen of Blues’. Sole has been a blessing to me, even though she says I have been her blessing instead.” Java is beyond versatile— in SL, she performs all genres of the blues, from soulful to country, bluegrass to gospel. As for her favorites, “Being a lover of all genres, I also sing R&B, oldies, rock and roll, and of course, Gospel music, which I hold close to my heart because of my religious beliefs and in dedication to my real life grandmother who was one of my real life influences to sing and share the joy of music.” When Java sings, you immediately feel her essence, and that is exactly what she hopes you will experience. “When I sing in RL and SL, I hope to touch the heart and soul of people that come to listen to me. I want to uplift their spirit when they are down. I strive to bring back memories of their family members and loved ones. I often use my circle of people for inspiration when selecting new songs. I do this because I know there will always be more people in the audience that I can touch, and for me, that is fulfilling and powerful.” As for the future, Java will continue to bring joy to all of us that love hearing soulful blues that are uplifting, authentic, and best of all, from the heart.

Known in SL since 2009 as JudiLynn India and RL as Judi Lynn, my mission is to share my vision and message as an artist with the global community. My work embodies my spirit and personality. My goal is to allow you to experience the image with your mind’s eye and allow it to effect you organically. I work generally work intuitively, getting lost in the layering of texture and color. Occasionally, I will include figurative work if my spirit is so presented with the composition.

I’ve always been interested in various crafts such as sewing and ceramics. I’ve also been active in music, playing piano, guitar and violin. After the turn of the century, I decided to focus my creativity on acrylic and digital painting and have totally enjoyed the ongoing journey.

Just as there is order in the chaos of the universe, the energy within me is brought into focus one canvas at a time.
