Leading change in power transmission The design of transmission towers is changing from lattice structure pylons to pylons with a tubular structure. As a result, Valmont® SM occupies a strong position in the transmission tower market. The design change is driven by the aim to reduce the visual impact of the pylons and enable a location close to populated areas.

Steel Fabrication and Machining Turning steel into solutions The Valmont® SM steel fabrication workshop is where order production of oil and gas equipment, transmission towers, material handling systems, and other constructions are completed. The facilities are built and designed to allow for a high degree of flexibility. Valmont® SM can handle large and complex structures, while meeting the high demands of strict documentation and traceability.
FLEXIBLE MILLING AND TURNING CAPABILITIES THAT CAN HANDLE

Machining is incorporated as part of the manufacturing process. The machining workshop is well equipped for small and large structures with high complexity and high demands. The machining workshop has modern, flexible milling and turning capabilities that can handle to 60 tons. Employees are organized in specialized workshops to ensure attention to detail and quality results. Our certified welders are supported by a variety of machinery and cranes during the steel fabrication process. In the production facilities, structures can be manufactured with weights up to 200 tons under roof and up to 600 tons for assembled constructions at the factory.
Assembly Bringing it all together Valmont® SM has a department responsible for assembly and service tasks within the energy, industry and building sectors. The assembly department has its own workshop for pre-mounting of machine constructions before final assembly and testing. Valmont SM carries out mechanical assembly, hydraulic assembly and electricity installation for cranes, winches, bulk handling equipment, etc. Valmont® SM works as a turnkey supplier to its customers and has the facilities to make various quality and function tests of the final product. Cranes and anchor winches are manufactured with traction of up to 600 tons.

Surface Treatments Where coatings and innovation meet Featuring state of the art automated robotics, the Valmont® SM coating facility at Vaerksvej is designed and fully dedicated to sandblasting, metallization and coating of wind turbine towers with a diameter of up to 6,5 meters. The entire process from sandblasting to hardening is carried out in one indoor facility separated by split walls and sliding doors. Being located in one facility ensures optimal production with limited energy consumption as the steel can keep the same temperature throughout the process, which is essential for coating. • The Valmont® SM fully-automated sandblasting set-up can complete the process on time to eliminate the risk of corrosion • Fully automated metallization ensures even layer thickness • Robot automated coating is more efficient and more uniform than manual coating • The facility can handle specifications for surface treatments subject to the latest requirements and norms within industrial painting, onshore as well as offshore Traditional coatings for specific situations Sometimes, the traditional methods of coatings are still the best. That’s why Valmont® SM provides traditional coatings for specific situations, including: • Oil and gas equipment and rotor houses that require traditional coatings • Maximum item size is 6m x 6m x 35m and/or weighing up to 250 tons • Specialized constructions that cannot be coated in automated facilities

Shipping made easy Moving large steel structures not only requires experience, and the right equipment, but the right location can make a big difference as well. Valmont® SM is located in the southern part of Denmark close to transport routes to Europe and global markets through the deepsea harbor in Aabenraa. You have several transportation options to arrange the best transport in terms of the delivery time and costs. You can choose between Aabenraa harbor, Esbjerg harbor or European motorway. Valmont® SM can handle components of up to 600 tons, where heavier structures are mounted on Aabenraa harbor and then shipped.
OTHER SERVICES Service and Maintenance Ongoing protection from Valmont® SM Valmont® SM’s service unit is based on its historical connection with utilities. The department has approximately 30 people employed primarily servicing power plants. Typical jobs include contract work on machinery, smaller work shop deliveries, and larger audits of the power plants: • Inspection • Repairs • Readjustments • Maintenance The department has both technical as well as work-shop related back-up from colleagues across the company if special knowledge is needed. Valmont® SM service includes available staff ready for a rapid reaction to emergency tasks – big and small – around the clock. As our customer you have the opportunity to sign a service contract, which provides significant economic and planning advantages in terms of precautionary and ongoing maintenance.

History XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Sønderjyllands Maskinfabrik (SM) was founded in the end of the 1940s and was owned by the utility Sønderjyllands Højspændingsværk until 1998 (now Dong Energy). In the beginning, it was a service workshop for the utilities, with own production of steel constructions for use in power plants and own production of transmission towers. Through the years, DS SM gained experience in other industries and developed competencies in material handling systems, process equipment, and complex steel structures for larger constructions. DS Gruppen acquired Sønderjyllands Maskinfabrik in 1998 and named it DS SM. At the time, DS Gruppen owned ABC Coating in Rødekro where the company handled coating of wind turbine towers for Micon (now Vestas). The acquisition enabled DS Gruppen to start black steel production of wind turbine towers. The first wind turbine tower production line was ready for use in 1998. Capacity was expanded with a second line in 2000 and a third in 2002. It also had close connections with the energy sector and continued to deliver steel constructions to utilities. DS SM started selling to the oil & gas industry in Norway in the middle of the 1990s. Since then, the industry has grown and Norwegian-based companies have been acquired by global oil & gas suppliers, resulting in DS SM now supplying globally. DS SM expanded its wind turbine tower production capacity in 2007/08A-2008/09A with a state-of-the-art wind turbine tower coating facility based on fully-automated robot technology.

In 2007, two black steel production lines for towers with diameters of up to six meters were established. In 2014 the company was acquired by ‘’Valmont Industries, Inc.‘’.

Operations are based on a dual production strategy with both series and order production. Production is organized in specialized workshops. In addition to own production, use of sub-suppliers makes capacity of order production very flexible. The core of Valmont® SM is highly skilled employees with extensive know-how. Working continuously on different projects, the Company strengthens and improves internal know-how. Valmont® SM has a flat organization structure, creating a company culture with decentralized and fast decision processes. Valmont® SM focuses on securing greatest possible ownership of projects for each individual employee.
